Phew... Thank you Mod Hiyori for carrying me throughout the past few days. It’s my turn to write again, now!
Today, we will be looking at Bitter and Sweet!
Their website can be found here, so please be sure to show them some support if you would like!
Tumblr media
Yes, I’m using the promotional phone background. It’s nice af
This post is going to be VERY long. Because of that, I’ll write everything else after the voicebank summary under a break.
Bitter is an UTAU voiced by Guillotama and developed by the Tasteloid Team. She is described to be “baritone,” and seems to lead towards the somewhat masculine side of voice range. However, she seems to be able to sound androgynous if a user wished to make her do so! Her voice range is actually quite low, even going as low as G2 and as high as D5! Her voicebank is said to be CVVC, allowing the user to get smooth results from it. She is said to be suited for electronic and rock, as evidenced by the Raspberry Monster sample displayed in this video. She has a somewhat strong American accent, though as said in a previous post that’s not a bad thing at all! If anything, it helps differentiate the voice! The harsh tone and pronunciation definitely adds onto her character!
Sweet is an UTAU voiced by Spectrabund, and developed by the Tasteloid Team as well. She is also CVVC, allowing for smooth results too! As her voice implies, her tone is soft and gentle. She is said to be suited for RNB and ballads. Her voice is actually also quite mature, and soothing to the ear... Perhaps similar to a mother singing to her child, if that’s the appropriate way to describe it? Her voice is described to be “Contralto,” having her range go from a low D3 to a whoopin F5, or higher notes to be exact. It seems that her voice is better suited for softer songs, but have been shown to fit happy little pop songs or even some that are a bit more upbeat. This is shown in the cover where they all sing At the Mercy of a Dream, which you can hear here! Props to you for doing such a good job here, by the way. Like Bitter, she has an accent but it’s less noticeable. It’s quite fitting for her character as well, don’t you think?
Now, let’s head onto the next part of this post!
I must say... Your team really blew the demo reel out of the water here! Needless to say... I’ve been quite impressed with the clean and professional presentation. The presentation was, indeed, very pleasing to look at. The introduction to the video, as well as the little additional genre the voices are suited for was actually very neat and nicely done! The video wasn’t too boring or too extra, but rather just right in my opinion! The colors of the illustrations are also very nice to look at and makes use of bright colors without it being too eye blinding. The mixing was also quite neat for the most parts!
Now, I noticed only a few things off about the voicebanks and videos... Which was how some static could be heard in Sweet’s voice around the higher notes... But that’s quite difficult to fix if it’s engine noise, isn’t it? After all, the UTAU program can be quite difficult when it comes to soft and breathy voices. If that’s the case, I can’t quite place the blame on you for such a thing. That being said, please do take caution when mixing so that you don’t apply too much Treble Boosting to the rendered UTAU wavfiles! ^u^
Another thing I noticed was how Sweet seemed a bit faster paced than the instrumental in the final sample, Reverse Rainbow. To be precise, around 3:47-3:56 and 4:19-4:22. Though, that’s more on the field of mixing the actual audio! I’ve gotta admit I really liked how Bitter and Sweet harmonized together at 4:22 onward!
Other than that, I don’t quite see a problem with their voicebanks, at least from audio. They’re actually very clean and smooth aside from the things I’ve mentioned, though the things I’ve listed above are things I’ve heard. Be sure to take it with a grain of salt, in case! ...Speaking of, when’s “Salt” and “Spicy” coming, if they exist? wwwww
Another thing I genuinely love about these two are how their appearances are more on the case of “show, not tell.” Just by simply looking at Bitter, I could already tell she’d have a quite chaotic personality by her face alone, or perhaps be similar to a Disney villain of some sort! The same goes for Sweet, where she’s just absolutely friend shaped! Speaking of, I was wondering if her symbol was displayed somewhere on her outfit like Bitter’s. I believe it may help distinguish her, should someone ever somehow make an UTAU that’s similar to her appearance-wise.
The pages are quite simple and easy to understand, in which it simply has the voice properties and a very small summary of their personalities. It also has additional voicebank details that tell the user what else they can access! It basically has the details that are needed to know the character and the voicebank.
All in all, round of applause to your team for these guys! The presentation itself was very nicely done, and I was quite impressed with the demo reel! The character concepts are actually quite cute and unique! I haven’t seen anyone else do their UTAU characters based off food tastes wwww
Thank you very much for your submission! The next part will be out soon after this post (and the ones following after)!

HI absolutely no worries if you're not up for like an in-depth discussion about this or anything but I just saw your post on analysing sound with Fourier transforms and was wondering if you used python to do it? I'm about to start a really similar project and thought it was super cool to see this on my dash! :) if you did use python, what modules did you end up using, esp for the visual representation portion?
(Also, congrats on finishing all those lab reports! That's really awesome!)
anon, you do not understand just how excited this ask made me
i did use python!! i play the string bass, so i recorded myself playing a scale and then saved it as a wav file & then uploaded that. [ from scipy.io import wavfile , and then read it into the code with  rate, data = wavfile.read('file-name-here') ]
for the visual stuff, we did two parts! the first was a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) which tbh I still don’t entirely understand lmao. [that’s part of the numpy library,  fourier_transform = np.fft.fft(data) ]  if you graph the frequency (using the sample rate you got when you read in the wav file & the number of data entries) vs. the absolute value of that FFT, you get this really funky looking graph!
Tumblr media
these are the frequencies (aka different pitches) that were most common in my data! if you read in a sound file that was just one single note, you should ideally have a really tall peak that would let you figure out what note it was
the second way we visualized it was with a spectrogram - basically, as great as the FFT is, it doesn’t tell us anything about when any of this nonsense actually happened. was it a scale that went up? was it a scale that went down? was it just random notes? a spectrogram shows us the time also, which is v fun.
spectrograms are part of the matplotlib.pyplot library so you can import that and then do [ plt.specgram and then graph it with plt.colorbar() ]  here’s a zoomed in version of my spectrogram!
Tumblr media
you can see that the frequencies go up, starting around 100 and ending somewhere close to 200. (if you look at a table online, you should be able figure out what scale i played!)
this was probably SO much longer than you anticipated, and simultaneously not long enough to accurately explain things, but if you ever want to dm me i would genuinely love to share my code with you & chat about whatever !!
