good morning gymternet i'm tumblr user urara-ashikawa here to explain why urara was left off the team and why i think that's point blank the stupidest thing JGA has done since leaving mai at home for stuttgart 2019
japan’s worlds selection procedures
Tumblr media
the team must be composed of
the top 3 AA finishers at the NHK trophy, which combines its scores with that of the two-day total of the all-japan AA championships in order to get the final standings
a gymnast A chosen for contribution to the team total points (and must have finished within the top 10 AA at NHK)
a gymnast B chosen for contribution to the team total points (no AA requirement)
japan’s WAG team is as follows:
miyata shoko (NHK trophy winner)
kasahara arisa (NHK trophy second place)
yamada chiharu (NHK trophy third place)
sakaguchi ayaka (NHK trophy fifth place, national beam silver, floor and vault bronze medalist)
fukasawa kokoro (national uneven bars champion)
how gymnasts A and B are selected
Tumblr media
“when combined with the three gymnasts selected through criteria 1 for a team total (the three best scores [per apparatus] among the five gymnasts), the two gymnasts (gymnasts A and B combined) who can contribute to the highest total are to be selected.”
I. the “scores” of the three gymnasts selected through criteria 1 on each apparatus are calculated by getting the average of the top 2 scores among three competitions (all-japan AA championships qualifications, finals, and the NHK trophy)
II. the “scores” of the two gymnasts selected through criterias 2 and 3 (that is, gymnasts A and B) on each apparatus are calculated by getting the average of the top 2 scores among five competitions (all-japan AA championships qualifications, finals, the NHK trophy, all-japan event championships qualifications, and finals)
here are my calculations:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as you can see here, shoko, who won NHK and as such was automatically named to the team, only hit UB on 1/3 of the days, which is why her average above (which would be one of the counted UB scores under the japanese algorithm should urara be on the team) is so low, and why kokoro, a UB specialist, got the advantage over urara.
Tumblr media
why it is so stupid of jga to leave urara at home
she is the reigning beam world champion. no matter what kind of form she’s in at domestic championships that take place four to six months before worlds (urara only hit the two 14.1+ scores she needed to put her in contention, ended up falling at NHK, event championship QFs, and the EFs), she is still japan WAG's best chance at an individual medal
(half jokingly) anyone who can do a save like she did in kitakyushu quals deserves the benefit of the doubt tbh
shoko is clearly capable of UB scores that are above 13. had her average been 13.3 or higher (not an exact number) urara would have definitely made the team (not to mention that just a month before all-japan AA shoko’s arm was in a cast, which makes it impressive that she even won silver)
i also posted a shortened version of this explanation in a thread on twitter @ryuseisrudi but this is the more detailed version. anyway justice for urara!!! she will most definitely be an alternate for worlds so we’ll see what happens by then. feel free to ask me things!

Olympic Team Predictions
So I will do some team predictions about the most contested selections from time to time until Tokyo to see how the outlook changes during these two months and a half
I have not been following WAG lately so these might be a little bit LOL, but mixing team deficits, current situation and historical records I will try to guess the most pausible options imo
Last two or one gymnasts, depending of the country, are the non-team gymnasts
in italics the spots in the moment of posting I had more doubts about
13rd May
USA
Simone Biles
Sunisa Lee
Jordan Chiles
Grace Mccallum
Jade Carey (lock)
Kara Eaker
RUS
Angelina Melnikova
Viktoria Listunova
Vladislava Urazova
Elena Gerasimova (ideally this spot is Vorona’s, and Akhaimova is also fighting for it  if comes back to her late 2019 shape, but currently, even though she messed up Euros QF - tbh it was her senior debut, it was expected - Gera owns it as this team needs someone more realiable on beam, and she’s literally the only Russian that can be included in that category)
Anastasiia Ilyankova (we will have to wait and see Agaf)
Yana Vorona (if Gera doesn’t make the 4-persons-team, this spot is hers)
CHN
Ou Yushan
Li Shijia
Tang Xijing
Lu Yufei
Liu Tingting
Fan Yilin (lock)
ITA
Giorgia Villa
Martina Maggio
Vanessa Ferrari
Alice D’Amato
Lara Mori
GBR
Jessica Gadirova
Becky Downie
Alice Kinsella
Jennifer Gadirova
JPN
Mai Murakami
Hitomi Hatakeda
Aiko Sugihara
Asuka Teramoto
Urara Ashikawa (lock)

Top Vaults of the Decade—as voted by the gymternet
Tumblr media
The Results are in! I was going to make gifsets but I’m lazy so others are welcome to it. Links and descriptions to the routines are below!
1. Mckayla Maroney (USA)—2012 Olympics TF (51 votes) Amanar Heard Around the World—huge height and distance, amazing form, and stuck landing. Watch and relive the NBC trio and that one judge in the replay losing their goddamn minds, along with the rest of us.
2. Simone Biles (USA)—2018 Worlds QF (16 votes) “Biles” vault (6.4)—Yurchenko half on with 2/1 twists. This vault was officially entered into the code and named after Simone at this event, and given a 6.4 difficulty rating, making it tied for most difficult vault in the WAG code.
3. Yeo Seojeong (KOR)—2019 Korean Cup EF (9 votes) Yeo vault (6.2)—Front handspring with 2/1 twists.  This vault officially entered the code and was named after Yeo here. Huge because South Korea isn’t a big gymnastics nation, plus it’s heckin cute because now MAG and WAG both have Yeo vaults. Also, her dad at 0:52!!
4. Alexa Moreno (MEX)—2018 Worlds EF (4 votes) --  VT1 and VT2 First Mexican female gymnast to medal at a World Championship. Very nice and controlled double tsuk for VT2, and an overcooked but powerful Rudi for VT1.
The remaining received 1 vote each
Sandra Izbasa (ROU)—2012 Olympics EF Facing immense pressure after watching several competitors before her fall, Sandra wins her first Olympic vault title, as well as her second Olympic gold overall, vaulting a Yurchenko half on with 1/1 twist and a DTY. Look how happy she is!
Yamilet Pena (DOM)—2012 Zibo Cup QF The hardest WAG vault completed successfully—front handspring to double tuck (Produnova). Yamilet is part of an exclusive group of gymnasts who have successfully landed the Prod.
Bailie Key (USA)—2014 Pac Rims AA The most perfect DTY you will see.
McKayla Maroney (USA)—2011 Worlds TF Arguably just as good of an amanar as her 2012 one except for the tiny step.

https://olharolimpico.blogosfera.uol.com.br/2019/10/16/ginastica-feminina-do-brasil-um-diagnostico-da-crise-que-bate-a-porta/
"Brazilian women's gymnastics: a diagnosis of the crisis knocking on the door"
this is the article i mentioned earlier! its main points are:
Brazil doesn't have enough high level coaches to form elite level gymnasts in depth. The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) gives full support to four athletes - Rebeca Andrade, Flávia Saraiva, Lorrane Oliveira and Jade Barbosa - and they are de facto the permanent national team headed by Valeri Liukin and training at the Flamengo club in Rio.
Carolyne Pedro and Thaís Fidélis train at the Cegin club in Curitiba with less support than the main four above, having to pay for professional support that the COB gives to the Flamengo girls such as nutritionists, massagists, physiotherapists etc. Regardless, these six are known as the "top six" of Brazilian WAG.
The insiders of Brazilian WAG were surprised at the result in Stuttgart, not because they thought things were headed the right way, but because they could hang on this quad and that the real crisis would only happen post-Tokyo.
The main problem is the inability to teach new coaches, result of the Brazilian Gymnastics Confederation (CBG) not standing up to a COB that takes ownership of women's gymnastics and imposes its own view of how the sport should be handled.
Early in 2016, the coaches Keli Kitaura, Alexandre Carvalho and Ricardo Pereira (the ones who launched Rebeca, Flávia and Jade's careers respectively) made a proposal to the COB of a project of spreading them across Brazil to develop gymnastics and find new talent, but they were rejected by the COB, which had other priorities.
With no perspective of helping Brazilian WAG and no jobs at clubs, Keli and Alexandre moved to USA to found a club and Ricardo is working with the Canadian juniors. Roger Medina, who discovered Thaís Fidélis, now works with the Argentinian team. The only coaches who worked with the top six girls that remain in Brazil are Iryna Ilyashenko, and Francisco Porath (discovered Rebeca with Keli), who is now the personal coach of all four Flamengo girls.
Georgette Vidor, the coach who discovered Daniele Hypólito and also helped coach both Flávia and Rebeca, is sidelined by the CBG and didn't even receive help from them to go to Stuttgart, having to ask for help to friends from other countries to get tickets.
The COB claims that 34 artistic gymnastics coaches have been fully trained in 2014 and re-trained last year, and the CBG claims 8 training camps happened last year, all open to personal coaches of all gymnasts, but insiders point that these measures will not see results soon enough. Flávia and Rebeca can compete until 2024, but otherwise they don't have the coaches to ensure they will have other gymnasts of this quality.
It is acknowledged that the top six girls receive enough support to commit entirely to the sport, but this support is not extended to other gymnasts. Of the five girls who competed in QF in Stuttgart, four of them receive R$ 10000 a month, from various sources - government, the COB, their clubs, and the CBG. Meanwhile, Letícia Costa receives R$ 925 a month from the goverment (so, slightly less than minimum wage) and a scholarship from her club, has an administrative job at the COB to make ends meet, and only started training full time three weeks before Worlds to be the alternate, which Jorge Bichara, sports director of the COB, claims was a great experience for her [😳😳😒😒😒].
Insiders don't think the problem is Letícia being put on the team, but rather that Letícia, someone who isn't a professional gymnast, was their only choice for the team. They believe Daniele Hypólito, who is one of the 11 gymnasts who is financially assisted by the CBG (which are top six girls, Dani, the injured Anna Julia Reis, and three undisclosed juniors), was discarded too quickly by the federation, and that CBG put their all their eggs in only six baskets and left Valeri Liukin with no plan B.
They also don't give enough international experience to the non-top six gymnasts, evidenced by sending no gymnasts to the South American Championship this year. Going to meets and getting good results is also a chance for gymnasts to raise the financial assistance they receive from the goverment, from R$ 925 to R$ 1850. Only Carolyne and Thaís had multiple chances to represent Brazil in international meets and develop themselves.
With how hard the sport is, and how little incentive they have to reach a higher level in it, gymnasts quit, as evidenced by Fabiane Brito and Julie Kim retiring after injuries. "In 2012, Brazil also had a weak team, but we knew Flávia and Rebeca were coming. Now, we might as well sell cakes on the streets", says a coach. [😬😢]

Significant WAG AA Scores under the 2022-24 Code of Points
This is not a complete list, it's a rough attempt to show where people stand. I have only included domestic meets if I have no other choice to reflect that gymnast but you should take them with a huge heaping of salt. I included a number of juniors who are Paris eligible.
Italics indicate a domestic competition subject to overscoring. Bold are scores from 2023
1 Simone Biles (USA) - 59.100 at 2023 US Classic
2 Rebeca Andrade (BRA) - 57.332 at 2022 Worlds QF
3 Melanie de Jesus dos Santos (FRA) - 56.200 at 2023 US Classic
4 Jordan Chiles (USA) - 55.833 at 2022 Worlds TF
5 Shilese Jones (USA) - 55.766 at 2022 Worlds QF
6 Jessica Gadirova (GBR) - 55.566 at 2023 Euros QF
- Jessica Gadirova (GBR) - 55.199 at 2022 Worlds AA
7 Jade Carey (USA) - 55.132 at 2022 Worlds QF

18 Helen Kevric (GER) - 53.900 at 2023 EYOF*
19 Hezly Rivera (USA) - 53.350 at 2023 US Winter Cup
20 Sakaguchi Ayaka (JPN) - 53.165 at 2023 University Games
21 Luo Huan (CHN) - 53.765 at 2023 University Games
22 Kaylia Nemour (ALG) - 53.731 at 2023 African Champs
23 Kieryn Finnell (USA) - 52.800 at 2023 US Classic
- Alice Kinsella (GBR) - 52.531 at 2023 Euros QF
24 Yamaguchi Sara (JPN) - 52.065 at 2023 Jr. Worlds QF*
25 Nakamura Haruka (JPN) - 51.765 at 2023 Jr. Worlds AA*
26 Ruby Pass (AUS) - 50.464 at 2023 Oceania Champs
*A junior score delivered under the FIG rules for juniors including a cap on skills at E and without some bonuses such as D dismount. It should be assumed these gymnasts would have higher AA scores if competing as seniors. US junior scoring is not subject to the same FIG rules as international scoring.
