17-year-old Valentina Georgieva (BUL) earns a silver medal in the vault finals at the 2024 Rimini European Championships. This marks the first time in 32 years that a Bulgarian gymnast has made it onto the podium, with the last medal achieved by Silvia Mitova in 1992. The victory comes two years after Georgieva endured a femoral fracture and a torn ACL during the 2022 European vault finals.

“Ok so I was thinking about instances where gymnasts with great routines unjustly didn’t medal/didn’t make finals and here’s the list so far:
- Silvia Mitova not getting a medal in the 1992 Euros FX final (that routine was everything)
-Lisa mason not making BB EF at the 2000 Sydney Olympics (with a solid tuck 1/1)
-Kristen Maloney not making FX finals in Sydney (ik she went OOB in quals but still)
- Elise ray not making UB EF in Sydney
- Nastia Liukin losing the Olympic UB gold to a tiebreak procedure despite having exactly the same D and E scores as He Kexin (both deserved it imo)
-literally every event final that anna pavlova was in, she couldn’t seem to catch a break”

I watched 1992 Worlds Semis for the first time yesterday and surprised me a lot that Mitova did a DTY! Never knew she tried it. I have been looking for some lone footage of it, but just found this one from 1991 European Cup where she also does it. Although the one at Worlds Semis was way better landed. Back then a DTY and a FTY had both a 10.0 SV, so doing a DTY was sometimes an unnecessary risk. But, as Lysenko said, “no matter how safe you play it, there’s never a guarantee that you will not make a mistake - if you can do something, you should do it”.
Here is also her floor from that same competition, imo the best time she ever performed it. Her form in the double saltos was dreadful, but the difficulty is insane for that time. And what can I say about the presentation, probably one of the most original, contemporary, and avant-garde routines of all time? This floor is more modern than anything we see nowadays. Oh, Bulgaria.

“I just wanna know what was going through the judges minds when they left Silvia Mitova off the floor podium at the 1992 Euros. I get that she looked close to OOB on her first combo, and use of video replays for accurate judging was very much in its early stages if not used at all, but seriously that routine deserved a medal of some colour. What an iconic routine tho”

Anyone knows if the daughter of Silvia Mitova is competing for Bulgaria again this year? She’s not at Cluj, right?

Silvia Mitova's floor routine at the 1991 World Championships was like Svetlana Boginskaya's at the 1989 Worlds. It didn't win Mitova the all-around medal, but its revelatory choreography caught everyone's attention.
