JSTOR Articles on the History of Witchcraft, Witch Trials, and Folk Magic Beliefs
This is a partial of of articles on these subjects that can be found in the JSTOR archives. This is not exhaustive - this is just the portion I've saved for my own studies (I've read and referenced about a third of them so far) and I encourage readers and researchers to do their own digging. I recommend the articles by Ronald Hutton, Owen Davies, Mary Beth Norton, Malcolm Gaskill, Michael D. Bailey, and Willem de Blecourt as a place to start.
If you don't have personal access to JSTOR, you may be able to access the archive through your local library, university, museum, or historical society.

i very much sympathize with how it must feel to be elizabeth seitz, to have been the #1 gymnast in your county and carrying the team for so long, only to have a teenage little shit come up at the last moment and snatch away your olympic dreams. if i were her, i would probably be saying the bitchiest, most uncharitable things to my closest friends about helen. it’s a really unfortunate situation and sometimes you do just need to vent.
but while i sympathize with the emotional reaction, it stops when she starts posting bullshit on social media about it. in public you still have to be gracious, no one likes a sore loser.
#to be clear this isn’t how i see helen but it’s probably how i would feel about her if i were in eli’s shoes#emotions aren’t always rational but you are still responsible for your response to them

Some Pokevillain Fancastings (I have delayed this vid for too long)
Wally Wingert (Maxie) - The second best voice for The Riddler and the best official voice for Rufus Shinra, also would be the best choice to voice Maxie.
Jamieson Price (Archie) - Price already voiced him in the Generations OVA and aligns with how I imagined the man to sound, so he's my go-to.
Ray Chase (Cyrus) - Chase definitely has the talent to pull it off, plus he voiced Gendo Ikari in the past, so my confidence in him playing the perfect Cyrus is extremely high.
Patrick Seitz (Lysandre) - It was either him, Matt Mercer, Paul Saint Peter, JB Blanc, or Kevin Conroy (R.I.P). Still Seitz's Dracula voice was what made me come to this final verdict.
Elizabeth Maxwell (Lusamine) - A similar situation to Lysandre, however Maxwell managed to win me over a bit.

Knight of Cups (Terrence Malick, 2015)
Cast: Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Brian Dennehy, Antonio Banderas, Frieda Pinto, Wes Bentley, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer, Imogen Poots, Ben Kingsley (voice). Screenplay: Terrence Malick. Cinematography: Emmanuel Lubezki. Production design: Jack Fisk. Film editing: A.J. Edwards, Keith Fraase, Geoffrey Richman, Mark Yoshikawa. Music: Hanan Townshend.
Two films kept coming to mind as I watched Terrence Malick's Knight of Cups: Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) and Andrei Tarkovsky's Mirror (1975). Fellini's film because the journey of Malick's protagonist, Rick (Christian Bale), through the decadence of Hollywood and Las Vegas echoes that of Marcello's (Marcello Mastroianni) explorations of Rome. Tarkovsky's because Malick's exploration of Rick's life exhibits a similar steadfast refusal to adhere to a strict linear narrative. Most of us go to movies to have stories told to us. Our lives are a web of stories, told to us by history and religion and science and society, and most explicitly by art. We tend to prefer the old linear progression of storytelling: beginning, middle, end, or the familiar five-act structure of situation, complication, crisis, struggle, and resolution. But artists tend to get weary of the straightforward approach; they like to mix things up, to find new ways of storytelling. The modernist novelists like Joyce and Woolf and Faulkner eschewed linearity, and filmmakers have tried to take a similar course. They have the advantage of working with images as well as words. So Malick, like Tarkovsky and Fellini and others, experiments with editing and montage to meld images with language and gesture to probe the psychological depths of human character and experience. The problem with experimentation is that experiments fail more often than they succeed. Some think that Knight of Cups is a successful experiment, but most critics and much of the film's audience seem to disagree, to judge from, for example, a 5.6 rating on IMDb. Knight of Cups spent two years in post-production and there are four credited film editors, which suggests that Malick over-reached himself. For me, what was lost in the process of making the film was a clarity of vision. Granted, the lives of human beings are messy, loose-ended things, but what do we depend on artists to do but try to make sense of them. I think Malick lost sight of his protagonist, Rick, in trying to interpret his life and loves through the film's odd amalgamation of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress and the Major Arcana of the tarot pack and then overlaying it with a collage of images provided by Emmanuel Lubezki's camera. We glimpse Rick through filters, grasping for moments that will resolve into something substantial about him, his problems with his family and with women. And for all the casting of fine actors like Bale and Cate Blanchett and Natalie Portman, the production negates their attempts to create characters. In fact, their starriness works against them: Instead of being drawn into the character of Rick or Nancy or Elizabeth, we're removed from them by the familiarity of the actor playing them. I understand what admirers of the film like Matt Zoller Seitz are saying when they proclaim, "The sheer freedom of it is intoxicating if you meet the film on its own level, and accept that it's unfinished, open-ended, by design, because it's at least partly concerned with the impossibility of imposing meaningful order on experience, whether through religion, occult symbolism, mass-produced images and stories, or family lore." But I wonder if that's enough to make an experiment successful. I came away from Knight of Cups knowing nothing more about its characters than I did before I met them.

The Americans is (I guess I have to say “was” now!) a series in the vein of The Sopranos, The Shield, and Breaking Bad, about anti-heroes doing ugly things just out of sight of polite society while presenting themselves as working stiffs. But Joe Weisberg and Joel Fields’s drama always distinguished itself through its emphasis on political ideology (most anti-hero shows are about money); the Mad Men–like scrutiny it gave to real history; its refusal to foreground subtext and symbolism and make the characters self-aware; and most of all, the idea of life as an extended performance on an endless array of large and small stages. The latter notion is externalized through Russell and Rhys’s extraordinary, often borderline farcical array of wigs, hair dyes, glasses, and facial appliances, some of which suggest an alternate show (a wacky sitcom, perhaps) that their children might have watched on TV while the adults discussed tactics in the garage.

Because the talent collected for Pokemon Masters impresses me, I’m making this masterlist post of voice actors. They are divided into four categories: Fresh and Unestablished (VAs who just surfaced in the past few years and haven’t become noteworthy names at the time of their casting), Fresh and Established (VAs whose careers have spanned the late 2010s and are already well recognized for at least one other major role, usually several), Veteran (VAs whose careers have spanned the late 2000s / early 2010s), and Super Veteran (VAs whose careers have spanned the early 2000s or even earlier). Again, bear in mind this reflects their status when cast for this game - obviously, things change: some Unestablished VAs are now starting to become Established, some Established VAs are reaching Veteran status, and eventually Veteran VAs will be known as Super Veterans. It’s just how the business works.
SUPER VETERAN: Ben Diskin (Ace Trainer, Scientist, Street Thug) Bob Carter (Chuck) Bryce Papenbrook (Lear) Cam Clarke (Alder) Carrie Keranen (Lucy) Christopher Bevins (Koga, Brycen, Swimmer) Christopher Corey Smith (Kabu) David Matranga (Gordie) Dorothy Fahn (Agatha, Marley) Doug Erholtz (Guzma) Ezra Weisz (Molayne) J Michael Tatum (Emmet) James Carter Cathcart (James, Meowth) Jamieson Price (Wulfric) Janice Kawaye (Janine, Kahili) Jennie Kwan (Emma) Julia McIlvanie (Olivia, Camper) Karen Strassman (Fantina) Kirk Thornton (Blaine, Clay) Kyle Hebert (Pryce, Crasher Wake) Mela Lee (Karen) Michelle Ruff (Plumeria, Lusamine) Minae Noji (Olympia) Patrick Seitz (Lt. Hail the Conquering Hero (Preston Sturges, 1944)
Cast: Eddie Bracken, Ella Raines, William Demarest, Raymond Walburn, Franklin Pangborn, Elizabeth Patterson, Georgia Caine, Al Bridge, Freddie Steele, Bill Edwards, Harry Hayden, Jimmy Conlin, Jimmie Dundee. Screenplay: Preston Sturges. Cinematography: John F. Seitz. Art direction: Haldane Douglas, Hans Dreier. Film editing: Stuart Gilmore. Music: Werner R. Heymann.
It must have taken real nerve to make a film that pokes fun at patriotism, mother love, small towns, political campaigns, and the Marines in the middle of World War II. Preston Sturges's film begins in a small nightclub, where a singer (Julie Gibson) and her backup group of singing waiters launch into a stickily sentimental song, "Home to the Arms of Mother" (music and lyrics by Sturges), during which we see Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith (Eddie Bracken) drowning his sorrows. When a group of six Marines on leave after having fought at Guadalcanal enters the bar, Woodrow buys a round for them, and is prodded into telling them his sad story: He joined the Marines, trying to follow in the footsteps of his father, a Marine who died in World War I, but was discharged because of chronic hay fever. Instead of returning home to the arms of mother, he went to work in a shipyard and arranged for a friend to send his letters to her from overseas, disguising the fact that he was no longer a Marine. One of the men, Sgt. Heppelfinger (William Demarest), learns that Woodrow's father was his old buddy who fought with him at Belleau Wood, while another, Bugsy (Freddie Steele), is appalled that Woodrow hasn't been home to see his mother since the start of the war. So the Marines collude to take an extremely reluctant Woodrow back to his hometown and pretend that he's a war hero who has just been discharged. Naturally, the plan backfires spectacularly when the whole town joins in the celebration and even railroads Woodrow into running against the corrupt mayor (Raymond Walburn). Speed is of the essence in a farce like this, because if anyone ever gave Woodrow a moment to talk, the whole thing would collapse like a soufflé. On the other hand, too much fast talk can be wearying, so Sturges introduces a romantic subplot: Feeling that he can never return home, Woodrow has written his girlfriend, Libby (Ella Raines), that he has met someone else, so Libby is now engaged to Forrest Noble (Bill Edwards), the son of the town's corrupt mayor. Sturges gives them a long walk-and-talk tracking scene in which Libby, confused by her revived feelings for Woodrow, tries to sort things out with Forrest, but to no avail. It's a funny, beautifully written scene, but it doesn't quite work because neither Raines nor Edwards is up to the acting demands it puts on them. Bracken, however, is wonderful, as are Demarest, Steele, Walburn, and other members of Sturges's usual crew of brilliant character actors, including Franklin Pangborn as the harried planner of the celebration and Jimmy Conlin as the town judge. This was the last film Sturges made under his Paramount contract, which he ended because the studio interfered: It objected, perhaps rightly, to Ella Raines's lack of star power, and took the film out of Sturges's hands and edited it. After a couple of disastrous previews of the studio version, however, Sturges was called back in for rewrites and some new scenes. The revised Sturges version was a hit, and earned him an Oscar nomination for best screenplay.
