(I'm sorry they're the mm turtles I'll use the popular tag for spoilers but after that it's back to mm tmnt. 2012 show was already called tales and tottmnt looks too much like rottmnt. Besides that I'd already been using mm tmnt when we even learned the show would be a thing. I'm sorry for being stubborn about this but I gotta be able to remember and navigate my own tags. they are the mutant mayhem movie universe. forever)

Anyways. Angel!!

Okay so I'm a little scared, because the first impression we get is very much her being just mean, felt a lot more like Kendra than Angel. I know I'll enjoy her more if I don't go in expecting 03 Angel and I'm trying buuuut it's difficult. I'm also hopeful though because the Purple Dragons as a group seem like vulnerable kids making some bad choices in a dangerous and difficult situation. Which is really at the heart of the role Angel usually plays in the story.

And they are all! So much fun! Chainsaw guy is not a character I expected to like so much! And I love this Hun!! I kinda feel like the only reason for him being named Hun was to set certain expectations for us so they could subvert them, but honestly I'm here for it. I enjoy being surprised by a character being way nicer than I expected.

Are the Purple Dragons teens or adults though? It doesn't matter a super lot but I do want to be able to tell, especially since Casey is likely connected with them. Is Casey still an older role model for Angel? Usually Caseys are April's age but nothing in tmnt is ever set in stone. Casey's age is also gonna effect his/her dynamic with the turtles and I reallllly hope we do get Casey being close with them. I know rise Cassandra could've had a great dynamic with them if there'd been more seasons but if we have to make up Casey's friendship with them ourselves again I will be rather sad

If the Purple Dragons are teens close to the turtles age (which is the impression I got but I'm not confident in it), I would love to see their friendships develop with all the turtles, and (because I post about this all the time, I'm sure it's a question someone is asking,) I don't think I'd ship this Angel with any turtles regardless. That could change, I don't know her or them super well yet, but so far I don't see it. I might ship Raph with Hun though, which is not a sentence I ever thought I'd type ever in a million years

Anyways most of all I'm extremely super excited because!! Being the leader of the PDs and the dynamic they gave her with Hun I think we're gonna see a lot more of this Angel than we ever did for 03! Raph stole her bike so are definitely seeing her again XD (also didn't catch the new lady's name in spite of how many times they said it but Short Rich Lady using a teenage gang because the one thing she doesn't have is muscle is defs a villain I want to see more of, and I hope specifically her vs Raph)

And I was a little skeptical when she came in as The Boss who yells at her team, but she also does clearly want to protect them and I'm interested to learn more about her. I wonder if we'll get their backstory? Very big sister vibes which is so fun because Angel is usually very little sister vibes. I wonder if she'll have any fun parallels with Leo the way Hun did with Raph

Okay I need to actually watch more episodes before I say more which probably won't be till this evening but I had to say something about Angel I'm so excited I love her so much

Highlights

It was really neat to see how real designers are always using what they know and what they are good at to influence their design process, no matter if it is a commercial or personal project. It was comforting to me to see that there doesn't always have to be this immense pressure to try something that you don't know anything about, or that you aren't good at, just for the sake of going out of your comfort zone. Although this is useful and can really expand a designer's horizons, it is not always necessary to be uncomfortable at all stages of a design process. Drawing on your interests and strengths is also a good way to create a successful outcome.

The calibre of presentations were top tier - they were engaging and 'guided your eye', and embodied all the tips we go over in class, such as limiting the number of words on a slide.

I was pleased at how this international conference still allowed for freedom of the hosting country to incorporate any necessary traditions or honours that are encouraged in that country. The conference opened with a Mihi and Waiata, which communicated to me that it was important for Alt Group and AGI to create a safe Māori space.

Kris Sowersby's talk was a huge highlight of mine. He broke down a new typeface that his is collaborating on with Johnson Witehira, called Matarongo. It was fascinating to see their process (iteration on iteration on iteration), right from the deep, rich research they did through to the varied typefaces that were created. So many things were considered - lower/upper case, sans/serif, extra glyphs, etc. I found that I gained a whole new appreciation for typography through watching his talk.

A reward for myself next year if I keep biking and build technical skill will be to get a second bike specifically for technical trails instead of my hybrid so I can keep the hybrid for road trails and the trainer. Maybe another nice one. Maybe a dark green one to match my black bike if I can find one 🤔

s20: um. i actually kinda hated this season. but ig if i Had to choose one, itd be episode 10, the end of serialization as we know it, bc it finally ended that season ^_^ no offense to any s20 stans out there, i just thought it was so boring

s21: episode 2, put it down. tweek n craig content, gay ptide ^_^ this is also the one where we learned that tweek can sing, play piano, And bake, and we also got to see craig learn how to support tweek better, which was very sweet ^_^

s22: episode 10, bike parade. i didnt super love this season either, so its kinda a case of picking the one i wasnt bored with. plus in a way it kinda felt like one of the original episodes, it was like a lil blast from the past !

s23: episode 2, band in china ^_^ we got stans band, crimson dawn !! it was great learning more abt how stan felt abt having to move to a farm, plus butters ripping it on a guitar was so funny. and then randy did stuff too idk

s24: this season has just been the 2 specials so far, but i liked the vaccination special, episode 2 the best ^_^ bc 1, the brovorce arc started, n im rly excited to see what happens with that. and also the way it ended left me hopeful that maybe the shows gonna go back to the way it used to be a little bit <3 i also liked how we saw stan gettin really mentally ill with freaking out over the pandemic, but that mightve been in the first episode instead...

twu s2 thoughts even though nobody asked <3 just a brain dump and it’s quite long so I tried to separate my commentary by categories but it’s still a mess unfortunately. Spoilers under the cut!

General

Overall, I enjoyed season 1 more than season 2. I’ve watched season 2 three times now, and I do think it had some good parts that I definitely overlooked during my first watch (probably because I was preoccupied with Charlotte x Shona 😶😅). My initial reaction to this season was like ‘hmm so that happened and I’m not sure what to think’ but then I rewatched it and tbh I think my complaints are mostly to do with the time jump between seasons and the pacing...

Like yeah there’s only so much to touch on in six 25-minute episodes but!!! I finished the season wanting a bit more, because I thought that some of the things that were introduced were either not explained fully/well or they just dropped off completely and didn’t really have an effect other than me asking questions after the season was over, like it felt as though there were missing scenes— more on that later (though maybe they will be addressed in season 3??? If there is one? How soon do shows get renewed? Idk). Though I guess the audience does have to do some interpretation of their own but still... Idk! Idk. And the assumption that certain events/plot points mentioned in a character’s dialogue would be enough for context had me kinda “:///” y’know? Like don’t tell me, show me?? I’d like the full course please!!

Charlotte x Shona (+ Vish I guess)

I think it was really jarring to see their relationship grow from colleague/business partners to friends and then finally to something more in season 1 only to see them awkwardly handle their unresolved feelings in the workplace with nothing to show for their actual relationship besides a mention of “a week-long gay safari” + the brief flashes of a sex scene that was intermingled with Shona and Vish’s cyber sex session, which in itself is 😐😐😐 like yes it shows that Shona still thinks about/fancies Charlotte in some capacity, but if I were to choose between that sex fantasy/flashback or a flashback of Charlotte and Shona together (like Charlotte telling Shona she was falling for her!!!!)... I think I’d choose the latter? I was just disappointed that we didn’t really get to see Charlotte and Shona being all cute and romantic with each other this season :(

ALSO I wished we got to see more of jealous!Shona; I was super hyped to see that since that scene was included in the trailer. It was nice to see her want the best for Charlotte because she’s “great” but the jealousy part of knowing Charlotte is dating someone great got settled pretty quickly and instead we got Shona evaluating her commitment to Vish and considering the idea of having kids after learning she has a womb of a 39-year-old (😐) and it felt.... like a lot!! It was definitely different from season 1 Shona (”I actually don’t want kids” “I genuinely, I genuinely don’t, you know, it’s not a big deal. Just never have” in 1x04) but if this was to show her dealing with comphet or internalized homophobia or just simply running away from her feelings then... idk what to think of it! I really don’t. I think this is where things could have been written differently because using an affair with Charlotte like that (an affair that we didn’t even get to see besides the stolen kisses at the finance event) was so... ugh, I’m suffering here

Anyway, I think their office scenes were definitely highlights of the season, like Indira and Sharon really gave those scenes their all!! Even though it hurts to see Charlotte so heartbroken and Shona running away from her feelings and hurting Charlotte in the process, I live for the angst lol. I will say though, the 180 that happened after their convo outside Charlotte’s office was a bit “🤔” considering Charlotte had talked to her therapist about Shona for 4 months. Like one hungover feeling dump from Shona and they can move on? Hmm communication is connection, huh. And I guess they were just excited that the article got good results? But how cute that they got each other gifts of their picture in the article??? Wtffff I love my “unfunny and obvious” gal pals even though I’m in pain

As for the voice note... omg, so many questions. Like did Charlotte try to reach out to Shona after she abruptly ended their call to check if she sent the voice note to Vish?? Was that gonna be the first time Charlotte heard Shona say “I love you” to her? What was the reason Shona said “I love you” anyway??? Is she, you know 👀 Also do y’all think Vish will listen to the entire voice note since it was clear it was meant for Charlotte? And who knows maybe Vish’s phone died and he can’t turn it back on or check his WhatsApp or whatever. I’m in denial lmao. But also I think he's a pretty good guy, like when he sent biscuits over to the house when Shona wanted some and him saying what’s the point of having fun in New York when she's not there with him... :/ but he was also a bit weird about her putting a nail in a wall or leaving out the egg duck or whatever as a display item in their house though I suppose that’s not a huge problem so like idk man idk!!! I'm just saying season 3 better not have a time jump I need to see what happens and not just in exposition

Shona and Aine

Love them :) I wish they had more scenes together (if that's possible??) but I liked the somewhat change in dynamic seeing Aine a bit worried about Shona (asking her if she’s okay when she mentions she’s thinking of getting a fringe lmao and again asking if she’s okay when they’re unpacking in Vish’s house). And of course Shona is still very protective and worrisome but seeing Aine just miserably lounging around her apartment over the weekend and getting in her bike accident after Shona wasn’t too supportive of her and James’s business idea made me so sad :( like Shona was so shitty about her not typing up everything in the notes for the meeting! And not even reading James's CV... big yikes. Anyway I thought it was odd that we didn’t get a follow up on the voice note Aine left Shona after getting into the bike accident... like she sounded soooo shaky and out of it :((( what luck Shona was sick and didn’t see Aine with a missing tooth before she got it fixed

Anyhow, Aine was right when she said Shona needs to talk to her and talk about her feelings more!! AND this is part of where my complaint about the pacing and the missing scenes comes into play! I think we should have seen Aine and Shona fighting about Shona’s affair and leaving Vish the voice note. The audience knows Aine cares about Vish and I’m not entirely sure where her relationship with Charlotte stands since Charlotte told Freddie about her being in rehab (on the assumption that he knew, as Aine’s ex-boyfriend) but!!! Just cutting to them on the floor waiting for Vish’s flight to land was not as hard hitting as it could have been

Aine x Bradley (+ Richard)

OKAYYY. Cute!!! I definitely overlooked the signs during my first watch here but yeah they were definitely there during my rewatch(es)!! I quite liked seeing Bradley try to get Aine to stop talking negatively about herself and just try to treat herself better in general like exercising and actually eating off of a plate :’) and the comparisons between Bradley and Richard have me like 👀📝 Bradley saying he likes how much Aine talks vs. Richard’s friend Mark saying she talks a lot and how he wasn’t expecting a whole show to which Richard replies he thought that at first too but she “calms down” like brooo... alright. Anyway Bradley going with her to Tom’s funeral/service made sense since he actually met Tom (though Aine did vaguely talk about him and his drinking problem to Richard in 1x05) and the fact that she told Bradley about PACT and her time there but she didn’t tell Richard (to be fair she was thinking about telling him) hmm 👀 Also Bradley saying “Sometimes it would just be nice to be with someone you could just relax with as yourself” yeah I’m on board with them

Loneliness, COVID, Communication is Connection

Initially I thought these themes could have come across a little stronger but after rewatching... hmm. Yes, Shona was lonely in the house by herself; she even asked Anil to stay for dinner, had her own “pile of shit” boyfriend on her bed (which she did clear off), and told Vish that nobody had time for her. Also after the business meeting she asked Aine what she was doing during the weekend (which Aine also spent alone anyway), but I dunno... oh yeah her hen/bachelorette party was a bit lonely since places were starting to go into lockdown and not everybody could attend, but I think the COVID element entered a bit too late into this season? I’m not sure it really added much in terms of the loneliness. Maybe it did add to the uncertainty of things though

“Communication is Connection” was there but I thought it kind of fell flat as well, but maybe that was the intention— to highlight the mess that a lack of communication can cause? Shona apparently writing off Charlotte’s feelings and them not necessarily talking about their relationship/feelings until their convo outside Charlotte’s office... Shona talking to Seema saying she’s never really asked what Vish wanted (regarding kids) and Seema saying that’s a convo for her and Vish to have... Aine not telling Richard she overheard him and Mark talking about her... Richard not consulting Aine about telling Etienne about them and just getting a new tutor for him... hmm. What does it mean. What does it all mean

Other stuff I’m still thinking about/have questions about

Shona mentioning it’s “annoying” how Aine talks like she’s the only person to ever get sad in episode 1 but still telling Aine she’s fine and then in episode 6 Shona saying she only has two emotions or whatever so she doesn’t need to talk to Aine about her feelings as much -____- istg we need to get Shona to talk to a therapist in season 3!!!

I also liked that Shona, Aine, and Eileen talked more. I’m still a little disappointed that the fact Eileen leaving Shona for three months when she was a baby was not mentioned at all. Yeah it was a secret but when Eileen said “well, you should never lie. You’ll always get caught out.” I— HELLO? If anything, that secret seeing daylight could have had something to do with Shona's sadness + loneliness this season. Also could you imagine that becoming a fear of Shona’s, like what if she doesn’t want kids because she’s afraid of doing the same thing to hers if she has any??

Jim asking Charlotte if she’s straight and Shona immediately going “what does that have to do with anything” or something like that and apologizing to Charlotte after Jim left— I’m not sure how I should have read that??? Did Shona mention to Jim that Charlotte is a lesbian?? When he started to ask, he was still looking at Shona (yeah I’m reading too much into this I know)

Marcia figuring out that Aine and Richard were seeing each other (after he touched her hand on his way out to get a taxi)— what was the purpose? Other than Marcia obviously feeling bad for Etienne, whom I assume she sees as a son of her own (based on the Mom Instinct™ snooping when she was doing housekeeping + her convo with Aine when he came back from France). She didn’t talk to either Aine or Richard about it, just told Aine to have a good time when they were leaving the house to go to their “separate” events. I guess it wasn't her place to say anything, but hm. Speaking of Etienne, it was obvious he had a schoolboy crush on Aine (or at least he was vying for her attention) in season 1 and it’s really too bad we didn’t get to see his reaction to suddenly getting a new tutor or dealing with Aine and Richard’s relationship other than him looking at them hugging while the new tutor was teaching him. He deserved some more screen time this season :(

every time you post i have to drop everything because i just KNOW it's going to be amazing. may i ask how you manage your writing schedule? and how much of your fics do you outline vs how much do you let the soul of these characters jack your brain and roam free?

Uh, calling it a writing schedule might be a little generous. I’m unemployed at the moment, so I’m lucky enough to have very few other commitments on my plate right now. On the other hand--my basic sleeping/eating/socializing schedule is extremely inconsistent right now too, so my writing schedule is reflecting that; and you can probably tell that, considering my frequency of chapter updates has slowed a lot since I started posting for IT.

For my complete published fics, I don’t start out with an outline so much, I just have scenes that I want to write. So with Things That Happen after Eddie Lives, I knew that I wanted to write the scene in the beginning, where Richie spits quarry water in Eddie’s face, and I knew that I wanted to write a scene where, outside of Derry, Eddie was triggered and fell through a shower curtain because he was reminded of his attack. And then I just kind of got sidetracked by the painful mundanity of Richie being charged with murder and Eddie having to recover his identification documents from his home in New York--which turned into the roadtrip. Then once I had the idea of writing a roadtrip, all the scenes started to come together pretty organically, kind of following the structure of Richie and Eddie’s days. I thought, “At some point they’ll need to stop to eat, at some point they’ll need to stop to sleep, they’ll probably do stupid things in the car and I can write about that, etcetera. At some point they’ll get to Los Angeles, and then Richie will be weird about Eddie in his home, and that’ll be fun to write.”

With Indelicate--I originally conceived of it as “the size kink” fic. I thought it would be really fun to write a fic where Eddie had that clarity of mind he achieved at the end of the book, where he was kind of freed of his health and germ anxiety, and totally overcompensated when he bounced back from his Near Death Experience by exploring all the physical/mental/emotional limitations he placed on himself and kind of diving headfirst into hedonism. Without getting too spoilery--I thought of Eddie’s major arc as “his quest to prove that he’s not actually delicate,” and the title came from there. And then I  thought of Richie’s arc (vague vague vague), and the conflict that could come from there (also vague vague vague), and thought, “Yes, I’m set, this will be good, we’ll just start at Eddie’s recovery and go from there.”

And then I got totally distracted dealing with the emotions of assessing new physical ability and kind of mourning the body you used to have/always thought you would have. I mean, it’s very much a romance, but it’s also very much about recovering from grievous physical harm AND an emotionally abusive childhood AND THEN about learning who you are and what you like as a person, way later than most people do that kind of self-exploration. Again, I started out meaning to write one thing, and got totally derailed by the mechanics.

So the opening scene where Richie’s talking and Eddie’s going in and out of consciousness while in recovery from surgery, kind of hearing and not hearing him--I wrote that in one take. I tried redrafting it and decided I liked the original better, went back to that. I knew I had scenes I wanted to get to--Richie driving Eddie home from the hospital was one of them, but originally they were still in Derry and were going to go back to Mike’s place in the library, and all the Losers were out of town by then. I knew that the big scene in Chapter 13 was going to happen the way it was, but I didn’t know when, and it was just a matter of setting up all the pieces--Silver, Eddie furious about his own recovery and trying to prove to Richie that he’s tough--and telling my beta how I wanted “the bike scene” to go down. I was so excited to write that--I just had to get them from point A to point B; and then I couldn’t remain patient and I jumped ahead of myself in the outline, wrote it all on my phone one night when I couldn’t sleep, and then the next day had to write myself back there. There are a couple of other scenes like that I’m very excited to get to, but they’re spoilers. Let me just say that my beta is in agony waiting for the dishwasher scene.

Then there are scenes inspired by the research I’ve done into what Eddie’s recovery might look like--the nurses making him walk around to prevent blood clots every 2 hours, the side effects of morphine, the restriction on taking showers until 48 hours after release from hospital, the different instructions re: sexual activity. Some of the scenes--including Eddie fainting and the medical team assuming he’s had a seizure, until he wakes up very alert--are taken from my own medical experiences.

But some scenes just come out a certain way. At the beginning of Chapter 2, I could not figure out why Richie walked in and was just so angry with everyone who wasn’t Eddie. I tried rewriting the scene a couple times and making him tone it down--and then I realized that it made sense for him to be angry. So that wasn’t really on purpose, that was Richie grabbing the steering wheel.

My outlines aren’t super detailed, but I do have kind of a general roadmap to help me figure out where I’m going next, especially because Indelicate is such a big project. It gets vaguer and vaguer the further out I go, so I’ve got notes that just look like:

I feel a little bit like the cold harsh light of another day imposing reality and structure on these characters--like, I’m the one who tells Eddie that it’s probably going to suck to spend 10 straight hours in a car, I’m the one who sends Eddie weird nightmares, I’m the one who reminds Eddie that he has to go back to the doctor in 3 weeks--and those kinds of concerns are the ones that keep the plot moving. Otherwise, I’m pretty happy to let the characters goof off and do their emotional exploration on their own time.

That got really long; sorry, Indelicate’s just fresher on top of my mind, but if you go back through TTHAEL’s author notes at the beginning of chapters you can see my increasing panic as I realize that this will not, in fact, be a 2-chapter domestic fluff fic written to convince myself that I can, in fact, complete a project and pad out my AO3 works page.

The 100 Highlights - “Sleeping Giants” (5x03)

Hey, guys! It’s Kate back this week to recap the latest episode of The 100, “A Dad Story”, by listing some of my personal highlights of the episode. I have to say, every single episode of Season 5 so far has been super solid and this episode is no exception to that. Can’t wait to dive into this one!

Can I just start off by saying that I love how tastefully they have been implementing music into the show this season so far? I absolutely love Tree Adam’s score and its honestly weird sometimes to think that we had an entire two seasons without his genius, but I also think there’s power in not using any music at all for certain scenes. It creates a different vibe (and it becomes more effective when music is used). My one beef with the score in previous seasons has been that there were certain scenes I felt music wasn’t required, and that scenes would actually be more powerful without it (such as in the scene where Bellamy finds out Octavia is “dead” in Season 4 - I felt the music was detracting from his cries of grief). But I have noticed this season that they have quite a few scenes, compared to usual, where the music is used extremely liberally if not at all! And it gives a different vibe to the show - reminds me of TWD a bit at times. I love it.

Hi there. Charmaine Diyoza is joining Niylah, Luna, and Jaha on the list of characters who have the most soothing/pleasant voices to listen to on this show. It’s hypnotic. Honestly. God.

I’d like to take this moment to say that Emori and Raven’s friendship and trainee/mentor relationship is EVERYTHING!

The dramatic irony of Bellamy and the others listening over the radio and thinking the woman they are talking about is Octavia ... it’s A Lot

“She’s a feisty one. Pretty too.” Yasss that is my QUEEN

I have to say that the new characters we’re getting this season are possibly the best new characters we’ve ever been introduced to. Kara Cooper was amazing. Charmaine is a chilling, smart, yet reasonable antagonist and every line she says is fascinating. Madi has so much character potential, and McCreary is just the right kind of sociopath that can fuck our heroes up and ensure the show is always interesting (and also the kind of villain I feel JR has been so hesitant to incorporate into the show in the past, with the whole “there are no good guys” everything-must-be-morally-grey stance). Not to mention Zeke, who is just like ... everything I could ever want guys. THE NEW CHARACTERS ARE JUST SO GOOD. And the acting has been REALLY strong.

CHARMAINE DIYOZA IS SO FUCKING COOL AND RUTHLESS AND BADASS AND I ALREADY LOVE THIS NEW ANTAGONIST. She manages to be both authoritative and intimidating without ever having to raise her voice or pull out a weapon. That’s power. 

Seriously fam, I can’t get over how awesome these new characters are. We really hit the jackpot this season. They’ve opened up so much room for future story by introducing all these new people.

I really love how they have managed to show just how close the members of the ring are with each other while also demonstrating the tension between everyone, and all the ways that they can push each others buttons. There are so many layers to all the dynamics up in space and I am pleasantly surprised by it because, with how the season has been described, it sounded like the factions were going to be spacekru as a unit vs the bunker vs Clarke/Madi vs Eligius. But by showing all the conflict within these small groups, it creates potential for allegiances to shift around more than I was expecting. The bunker is built upon internal chaos, Eligius is far from being a unit (with a handful of loose canons and Zeke thrown into the mix to switch things up), Spacekru has some conflicting opinions/beliefs, and even Madi and Clarke are not completely on the same page about how to deal with the new threat. It’s really exciting all the different things the writers might do with that.

The scene where they find the cryo chamber felt like it could have come straight out of a scene from the mummy, where one character walks past a coffin and disturbs one of the dead. And when Kodiak’s eyes popped open, it was like a mummy awakening from the crypt. There was just something so eery about the vibe in there. The suspense was glorious.

“Murder ... murder ... arson resulting in murder ... armed robbery ... resulting in murder” I love one (1) comedian

Great-great-grandpappy Blake had four pHD’s. Bellamy is descended from a family of nerds: confirmed. I love winning.

The debate between Bellamy, Raven, Murphy and Echo over what to do with the sleeping army was just so tense and SO GOOD. Every single one of them had a good point. This is The 100 handling moral dilemmas at their finest.

“Clarke didn’t die just so we could go back to the ground and make the same mistakes.” THIS IS BELLAMY AT HIS BEST - THIS IS WHAT HIS ENTIRE CHARACTER ARC HAS BEEN LEADING TO. THIS MOMENT. He finally got to face that sleeping army of 300 once again and had the opportunity to choose differently this time. And he did. isaythatsmybabyandimreallyproud.gif

ZEKE SHAW IS AN ANGEL I FREAKING LOVE HIM. “Believe it or not, this is the best conversation I’ve had in over a hundred years.” HIS SMILE IS THE CUTEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN Y’ALL HAVE NO IDEA HOW MUCH I WANT TO JUST HUG THIS KID

But seriously, let’s talk about Zeke Shaw. Hearing someone take about life before the apocalypse is just ... wow??? I didn’t know how good it would feel to find a character that we can actually relate to, that understands our time. Hearing him talk about being an altar-boy just outside Detroit, being a fun-loving adventure-seeking kid with a Harley Davidson, made my heart warm.

“God, I miss that bike. More than most of the people.” First of all, relatable. Second of all, my heart hurts. When you think about it, Zeke’s story is pretty tragic. Leaving his whole life behind only to wake up a hundred years later to discover that everyone he once loved is dead and the world is irreparably changed. Imagine how fucking jarring that would be? Even if he doesn’t show his sadness much, I’m sure he must be feeling it, if his reminiscing is anything to go by.

HIS SMILE IS SO BRIGHT. WHEN DO WE EVER GET GENUINE SMILES LIKE THIS. LIKE, GOD, I MIGHT BE FALLING IN LOVE WITH THIS GUY

I’m never going to be over how awesome these new characters are fam. They’re so well-rounded already I’m shaking

“Start with how the world ended.” “Which time.” MOTHERFUCKER I’VE GOT CHILLS. HOW TO BE A BADASS WITH TWO WORDS: A GUIDE BY CLARKE GRIFFIN

“I left Clarke behind to die and I can’t - I’m not doing that again.” MY BOY GOT CHOKED UP IT’S BEEN SIX YEARS AND HE’S STILL SO AFFECTED BY HER LIKE F UCK

But real talk, that BR scene was beautiful. Their relationship has been chronically strained in the past but it really feels like they’ve built a true partnership up in space and I’m super here for it. They’re a good team, and they have a bond that kind of reminds me of a sibling-like bond (one that’s not as fucked up and dysfunctional as what the Blakes have). I really loved it.

“There wasn’t an escape pod.” “...Wut” Congrats, you PLAYED yourself. What a classic Murphy move dam

“You know what, you’re right: dying alone would have sucked.” I LIVE FOR THESE SEASON 2 PARALLELS

Real talk though: I may not ship them romantically but Lindsey and Richard have hella good chemistry and Raven and Murphy’s scenes together always pop so this is a GREAT sign for 5x04

Let’s be honest though that “Best Dad in the Universe Mug” is the MVP of the show for sure. That mug has singlehandedly carried the whole season. Riley who? Nothing but respect for my new fav character.

The next leg of my journey: Deutschland und Portugal

Two days later I was on the absolute worst flight of my life to Germany. That is a whole other story in and of itself, so let’s keep it short and hit the high points: 4 delays, 3 airport changes, landing 7 hours later than planned at Ulster Airport, making me take a two hour taxi ride south with strangers at 3 am to get to Cologne, my original destination.  Shout out to the Claussens, my German family, for being patient and still waiting for me to arrive via taxi at 5 am…9 hours later than planned.

The next five days were filled with both fun adventure and relaxing with the Claussens at their home in Bad Honnef, a city right on the Rhine. Jette left the day after I got there to work at a hostel in Portugal, but we were able to visit Burg Eltz and have a family picnic on the island park in Bad Honnef before she left. 

Each day was something new; except for brekky, I always ate the fresh laugen (pretzel bread) with jam because I can’t ever get enough. My mouth is watering just thinking about it! I fell off my bike on a journey with Elise to get cheap Birkenstocks because it was too big, which made for a good laugh for both us, and the people passing by. We hiked one of the seven mountains in the Rhine area, explored Köln, drank lots of Kölsch during a last minute stop at the city’s Kölsch Fest, drove the Rhine River path, and had a cookout. All this time, I was able to practice my German and look like a fool while I was doing it. The last night I had there, I helped Peter coach soccer, which was a grand time! I was playing with and against young soccer stars who wanted to practice their English with an older American woman. When the scrimmage came around, I had a young boy who was my ally and assisted in a goal I made. I tried not to get into my competitive mode and I’ll absolutely give those girls credit for whooping my butt most of the time.

Because the Claussens are family to me, leaving was really tough. Peter dropped me off at the bus stop at night and I woke up in Berlin the next morning. I used the public bathroom at the bus/metro station to brush my teeth, change, and quickly oriented myself with the metro. I dumped my stuff at the hostel and headed out for a full day of sightseeing. I started my day at 8am and ended back at the hostel at 8 pm, where I paid 5 euro for a freaking towel because I was disgusting from walking the city in high heat. I’m sure I looked like an absolute wreck, because the guy in line behind me offered to pay for my towel when I was debating spending the money or not...my desperation was evident and very real.

The day was fantastic though! At first I was overwhelmed with my map of points of interest, so I started with a boat tour through the city which helped to familiarize myself with directions in the city. Don’t worry, if you know me and my love for maps, I still had it out about 85% of the day. I was a full-blown tourist that day as I made a big loop of Berlin, hopping on and off the metro to make sure I saw all the things. I sat down in places that radiated good energy or cried for more attention. I played in a sprinkling fountain at the Berlin Cathedral with two other tourists because it was hot as hell, and we thought there was power in numbers: they wouldn’t think oddly of 3 people vs 1 cooling off in there. When I got back that night, I was exhausted but eager to journal about everything I saw that day so I didn’t forget anything. As I was journaling, a guy from Syria started talking to me.

Side note: The intro line for guys who are smoking: “do you have a lighter/want a cigarette” is NOT a great way to start a conversation. But I had that happen three times abroad.

Back to Berlin and the Syrian guy that disrupted my journaling to ask for a lighter (though he ended up having one, go figure!)  He and his family were refugees and he opened up to me about living in Syria during the war. It was one of the most eye opening conversations I’ve ever had the privilege of having. I ended up being speechless because I had a human being telling me what their “normal” was, which involved bombings a village away and death being a constant. I could never imagine what that was like, a topic I later reflected heavily on. I mean, how blessed are Americans that our (whole) country has not been destroyed physically and socially. (I might argue it’s on its way to social destruction but eyyy, I’m not about to get political. Please just be a genuinely kind person, honestly).  Because he was so open, I felt comfortable asking questions, which led to some pretty intense conversations. He surprised me when he casually showed me where he was shot one morning while enjoying breakfast outside. Holy man. Three weeks earlier I was sitting outside enjoying tea and biscuits, listening to the birds and the ocean on an Irish island, worried about absolutely nothing. Again, I felt overcome with deep sadness for him and the countries that are war ladden and overwhelming gratitude for what I had at home. He moved to Berlin to get a college education in IT, and disclosed that if he hadn’t been shot in the shoulder and taken to a Turkish hospital, he and his family would have died in a bombing that annihilated their village just days later. I can’t make this stuff up you guys. Talk about humbling and opening your eyes to different perspectives.

 On a lighter note (no pun intended), I did the same thing the next day. Started with some laugen (OBVI!) Jumped on the metro and got off near the Berlin Wall, East Side Gallery. I walked it twice and found something new each way. I sort of got scammed, which was absolute crap because I’ve spotted every trap on my travels. Needless to say, all I wanted to do was sit down and cry for being an idiot, but what good would that have done me? None. So I took a hard lesson, got back on the metro and headed to a beautiful little city just outside of Berlin called Potsdam. I saw most of the palaces, relaxed in the gardens, and chatted with other visitors. I still had lots of negative self-talk that I fought with all day for the morning’s unfortunate happening, but I persevered in site seeing anyway. This is one of my favorite things about travel. Making a really stupid mistake and being able to acknowledge it and move on.

Potsdam Palaces

 Berlin was so unique; it was equally as exciting and huge as it was cozy and welcoming. Definitely a place I would love to spend an extended period of time in! But I had places to be; namely Portugal with my German bestie, so the next day I hopped on the plane and headed to Faro, Portugal on the Algarve Coastline. My hostel room had 8 beds and was filled with Spaniards my age to a 40 year old Italian men. Quaint and homey, the hostel was not ready for what it would experience during the upcoming week. Brekky everyday was fantastic in the sense it was a time for connection and community. Everyone was eager to learn something new about everyone. I usually ended up eating with two Belgians, one of whom was a pilot, so my fears of flying were squashed when he gave me some very helpful information on planes. It was when I could talk to the people I shared a room with and through that, the Italian man, Luigio, took a liking to me. He was genuinely concerned that I had a great time in Faro, always asking if I slept alright, making sure I knew about the best places to go and reminding me that it is super easy to burn, so make sure I applied sunscreen regularly. When I burned like a tomato, he said: “Kelli, I warned you. What happened?” then told me about his prescription sunburn relief that was in the fridge. He was my acting dad for a few days. He always made me smile.I stayed a week, so people came and went, and later ended up meeting a Brazilian that lives in Dublin. Fast forward three weeks and I’d be staying at her apartment with a friend. Cool how that stuff happens.

Breakfast was also where I met two guys from Austria and Azerbaijan who seemed discombobulated and grumpy the first time I interacted with them. After I got to know them, I realized they were both just to the point and was hangry. Both can attest to that, and they soon became good friends. Wherever Jette and I would go, they would decide to come along. I can only describe them as lost puppies or the background noise you needed on your adventures; I say this in the most endearing way and they know I called them that, just to make sure we are on the right page. I refer to the friends I made in Faro as “a dysfunctional family” because that’s exactly what we were. We went to different beaches every day, out at night, hung out at brekky and on the roof of the hostel playing cards and made up Eastern Europe geography quizzes.

I was supposed to leave on a Wednesday, but Jette and the guys not only talked me into staying, but also found me cheap flights, because obviously money was the only thing holding me back. Nothing but a few solo days in Belfast were waiting for me in Ireland. So, in a last minute move, I extended my trip to spend four more days baking on the beach with a group of really great people.  In that time I was able to: perform at a bar with a musician, learn a new Brazilian dance, see another city, eat what some people might consider a sickening amount of falafel kebabs, attended a boujee rooftop pool party, and spend time with one of my favorite people. Faro was the epitome of the things I love about travel. Connecting with new people and hearing their stories and making friendships that continue beyond the trip. Also a bonus I got to lay on the beach an extra couple days. Thankfully it is easy to stay connected this day in age, and I talk to the friends I made somewhat often.

Germany and Portugal were two spectacular weeks. I know I’m not alone in the feeling of being a goddess following a day at the beach where your skin smells like the sun and sea salt. I experienced so much and built strong connections with others in this time. I still thank God for the people and experiences he brought into my life in these two weeks and for the adventurous soul I was born with.

Luckily, I wasn’t headed back to America yet; I still had four weeks to dog sit in NW Ireland and a visit from my best friend.

life update stuff

going to toronto this weekend, it’ll just be the weekend but that means no streams friday-sunday. which are my animal crossing days! i feel really bad about that because i’ve totally been slacking on those, but i'm trying to get some dream town visits done during my "free" time between work and practice to make up for it. but no guarantees. anyway, i'm excited to go to toronto, i've never been and i'm seeing a TON of friends while i'm there! it'll be a whirlwind 48 hours but hopefully it'll be a lot of fun!

i didn't want to say anything while things were so-so, but things are... well, *more* positive now, so i guess i can. a few weeks back, i interviewed for a new job. it was a job i went in wanting, and the more i talked to them during the interview, the more i wanted it (which is always a good thing as an interview goes on!). the interview went *really* well, we got along great (even got sidetracked a few times, talking about our cats and stuff) and i left feeling very confident about it. this job ticks ALL the things on my list: the work itself (i'd be working a lot with lgbtq youth, which is super important to me... plus i wouldn't be afraid for my life!), the office environment (everyone is genuinely friends), significantly more pay, much better commute (<20 minute bike ride or <30 minute transit vs an hour right now), plus little things like the location is super convenient even besides that (like, my bank is right there, whereas right now i have to go really out of my way to pick up rent or whatever).

anyway, i had this interview, and then i didn't hear anything for weeks, so i got really sad because i didn't know what went wrong. but it just turns out that they took their time getting back to me! yesterday they emailed me about references, their reference check is VERY thorough (three past employeers about my work history, ethic, personality, etc. plus three professional references outside of that, at least two being supervisors). so i'm submitting that stuff today and HOPEFULLY it all pans out (my previous jobs have no reason to say i was a bad employee as far as i know, but... anxiety!). because i really, really want this job, it would be great.

aside from this, i've recently taken on a LOT of responsibility involving splatoon things. the captain of my team just got a new job and is as such largely unavailable, so as co-captain i've pretty much taken over. squidwest, which i run (technically i have a partner, but he hasn't done anything much in a very long time), has gotten really big and i'm planning things to keep it going and become even better. and i'm working on a couple "side" projects, including the splatoon resources guide webpage, and a website specifically about local scenes to help people connect with their locals or get some started up.

so i'm busy! but it's pretty great. but if i get this new job, where i'll be doing significantly more work at my actual job, i don't know when i'll have time for aaaaaall this. but we'll see!

Me getting my bike handle jabbed into my chest after a particularly nasty fall and waking up at home. Me falling off the swing and falling on the concrete edge of the platform the swing was on and waking up in my aunt’s toilet being washed off because I had a lot of blood coming out xD I’ll probably never forget that.

The one I have right now is pretty decent. It’s just above my shoulders in a sort of bob-ish kind. Lol, for a writer, I am the worst at describing things.

Nothing for a specific book but the most frustrating thing I’ve ever encountered for most all is the fact that they don’t offer customisable LIs and male MCs for the majority of the books. So if anything, that’s what I wanna change.

Early Childhood

2- 6 years old

At the age of three, I had a new four-wheel bike and my dad taught me to ride this. As I proudly demonstrated my new skill, I said "Watch how I ride this bike!". I sparkle when I am complimented by my mom for drawing a view of a house and mountain with my pencil and crayons. I always feel good about myself when I show off my intellectual abilities, counting out one to one hundred. I gained a "top " in our class and I am happy that time. I acquire feeling of self-worth because of my interactions with others who are important to me, such as my teacher, and my parents who gave me an immediate positive verbal and visual reinforcement. The center of libido is learning to control bowel and bladder movements. I failed in this stage. Wanna know why? When I was in kinder, grade one and three, I always poop on my underwear. The most embarrassing moments that happened in my life. When I was in grade four, I started learning how to wash my anus after pooping. I realized how embarrassing is to poop in the underwear. Obviously, this tells why I am always messy on my things and my thoughts-- I failed to surpassed anal stage and I developed shame and doubt. In addition, this was also the most ‘hayahay’ stage that we all ever had. We are just assigned to play and to do some household chores with rewards and recognition. Everytime I behave, they also gave me a rewards and if I failed to so, they will punish me. In this stage, I started to engage in different roles because of watching media. For example, in Super Twins, I always played the role of 'Tine'.

As I developed my capabilities to do more things, I learned how to walk, talk, and do the basic things that I need to learn such as reading, writing, counting and many more through the guide of my mother.  This was also the time when I started to go to school as a pre-school student. I developed my self-concept when I get along with other children, seeing my differences from them especially when it comes to simple things like playing. As a pre-school student, I was being disciplined by my mother to do homeworks and to learn reading and writing by limiting my TV time which was the major source of my entertainment. Also, this was my anal stage in which I am learning to control myself to be independent when it comes to my bowel movements and controlling my bladder and at the same time, I developed shame and doubt as my parents happened to punish me over the things I didn’t mean to do, like accidentally peeing on my bed, dropping the drinking glass, and forgetting to say ‘po’ and ‘opo’ when I’m talking to elderly. Every time I get punished, I will know that I did something wrong in which I started to developed the concept of morality. The good thing I can still remember is that everytime I got punished by my mother and after I cried, she will comfort me and explain why she got angry and punished me so as a little kid, I understand such things and tries my best to avoid being punished again

At an early stage, I have started to show exemplary skills in reading, writing, and counting, as well as deciding what should I do and what should not. This is because of the constant guidance of my relatives who culturally know what's best for me and the heavy exposure to the cartoons I watch on TV. Living with a strict family, I always have to ask for permission, like playing outside. Often times, it comes with a condition. My mom, being the organizer she is, wants me to clean all my mess first. As a result, I have developed the sense of being clean by washing my hands always and cleaning the toilet accordingly. Sometimes, however, they say no. And that is when I will cry to the fullest volume, unaware of the neighborhood who might be sleeping. This is because I still have struggles in thinking logically and understanding others' point of view. As a result, I'm only halfway between having a sense of autonomy, and shame and doubt. But when they say yes, my progress advances. As shown in the picture, my motor skills are being developed, and I slowly learned to be independent by not letting them push the bike anymore. The development of my self-concept now lies with the growing number of people around me, like my parents, other relatives, playmates, and classmates at school.

From the ages of 2-6 years old, I have learnt to develop a sense of awareness to my identity including gender, temperance, mental capacity and self-concept. A usual 3 to 5 year old is considered as a ‘yard kid’, where they are allowed to play outdoors and explore themselves, but I was different, for I was not fond of going outdoors to play with the other kids. I played alone or watched cartoons with my cousins and my parents for I only find comfort and safety inside our home. The idea that I am introverted was vivid at this stage, I usually get anxious whenever I spoke to someone I have newly met. Between my parents, it was my father whom I am more comfortable to be with, he was with me during my symbolic and pretend play moments, as well as during my learning stage. I remembered those times when he instructed me to recite the letters in the alphabet while holding a long piece of wooden stick. Once I recited the letters wrong, I will be whipped, a punishment which I guess was somehow effective for I become a disciplined one, a personality I am bringing until today. Regardless of the punishments I have received from my father, I still saw him as a role model, that’s why it seems like we connect and relate most of the time compared to my mom.

Since I started to learn how to talk, I’ve always loved talking! From talking, I developed that I can also sing. In the picture, that was the 3-year-old me singing in church. At the age of 3, I started going to a daycare school where I enjoyed interacting with other kids my age. At age 4, I entered preparatory in a bigger school. Here, I found people that turned into my friends. When with them, I started to differentiate myself from them, and realized that I was a unique individual with my large curly hair and big round eyes. My teacher taught us how to read, write, and count; after school I always want my parents to know what I learned that day by demonstrating it to them, challenging them to test me. That time I enjoyed going to school that my dependence on my parents decreased as I became a preschooler who wanted to discover more things more by herself with the world around her. I started to choose my own clothes and have my favorite food. I also discovered that I like performing that I always join in our mini classroom activities. Thankfully, my parents just let me experiment things to help me discover the things I can do giving me autonomy and initiative to choose. But of course, I was still young, so in any way possible my parents still taught me new things, such as toilet-training, and telling me to clean the toys after playing. I do remember having a television this time, but my brother and I can only watch if we slept after lunch. I can remember that I was always thinking that the characters on my favorite cartoon shows were real, and I always liked to be like them and do what they can do and because of watching too much on TV, my parents limited our time with it, and helped us focus more on studying.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

Our early childhood days are one of the best stages that we all have passed. This was the learning stage of our young and little minds. As we learned how to talk, run, walk and other skills like riding a bike, we became more excited about those skills that made us more playful as we love to repeat everything we can do. Also, by learning how to do basic counting, memorizing the alphabet, and basic reading, we developed the feeling of self-worth and achievement especially that everytime we gain positive reinforcement from our parents, just like what Tine told. However, some of us also experienced punishment as a form of discipline and as a part of teaching strategy from our parents  just like we have all  experienced in different ways such as limiting our time in watching TV, whipping with the use of stick just like what Joanna experienced and scolding us every time we misbehave. From those punishments, we learned the concept of what is right and wrong, but as a kid we tend to be self-centered on the things and decisions we made because just like what Joshua said, we still have difficulties to think logically and understanding others during this stage. Moreover, this was the stage where we have undergone potty training in which some of us find this kind of self control difficult and as a result, we happened to have one of the most embarrassing moments in life like peeing in our pants and accidentally pooping in our underwear just like what Tine experienced. For Joshua, he successfully passed this stage in a more good way than most of us and as a result, he was successfully trained to be an organized person. During this stage, we also achieved the autonomy vs. shame and doubt. Des, Joshua, and Joanna developed shame and doubt as they are being punished every time they are misbehaving and being mischievous while Tine and Amor built autonomy as they started to feel their independency from their parents to choose simple things that they prefer. Lastly, we all developed things based on the level of our awareness about the things that we like or we don’t like. We became more clear in demanding for the things that we want not unlike before from infancy stage in which what we can only do is to cry whenever we need or we ask for something. Tine developed to learn simple household chores as an exchange for positive reinforcements. Joshua developed his awareness on the things he preferred and he needs such as food, toys, clothes and other simple things. Amor developed her talents in memorizing and reciting poems and singing. In this stage, we all just love to play and have fun with our toys and playmates.

Welcome, people of all genders, to: Journey 2: The Mysterious Island! (Ooh!)

That’s right folks, the list of things to do in Marseille that I read told me that there are many small islands in just outside the harbour which I had no idea about previously and it recommended I go visit one, and so that is what we did! Luckily the list had told me about the one with the castle on it which turned out to be the cheapest by far and (I think) the coolest, so thank goodness for that :) We went to the bakery again and got four croissants for €2.20 for lunch (👌🏾👌🏾🤑) and got on the metro to the Vieux Port. We had such good timing y'all, we overslept as per usual (we are just so exhausted from the breakneck pace set by mom and dad (I think appropriate pacing of activities during the day for people on a three week trip vs people on a two month trip is pretty different :P)) so we arrived later than we meant to but we zoomed out of the metro, got in the ticket queue with 10 minutes until the boat was scheduled to depart and were allowed to go on that one and not wait an hour for the next one! Success!

The ferry to the island was so nice you could see everything so well and the water looked amaaaaaaaaazing and it was rad. The island is just like a lil big rock in the ocean with no sandy edge bits and no sloping-ness to gently bump your boat up onto, and not really a big docking zone for the ferry so the boat boy threw the rope and he was there to help but you just had to jump off the boat onto the dock :o Now it was in fact less of a jump and more of a large, momentarily airborne step, but it was very, very adventurous 👌🏾

Kate was super pumped about the island being like the famous five and I have never read the famous five but I have watched some sketches of *insert name of group here* pretending to be the famous five, so I can confirm that it was exactly like that. We climbed up the hill to the part where the stuff was and walked around the outside of the actual structure and it was so nice and chill and vacant and adventury and there was basically no one else in that outside zone which was weird because the castle was pretty dope but I think I liked walking in the grass and seeing the ruins and looking at the sea better :o The ‘castle’ it turns out is actually a fort type thing that then was a prison and then was a nazi base in the Second World War when marseille was occupied and it’s been there for a long time but it came to great fame because it is the prison that the count of monte cristo is put in in the book 'the count of monte cristo’, which I have also never read but I now know the plot of because there were all these displays about it at the castle. Lots of places that we’ve visited that have been featured in books are very excited about this! It’s very nice to see this excitement :)

It was very nice it was just a shame because people had written their names and carved their names and stuff into like every available wall space in the whole place? What? Come on people! And they even had a wall where they had put up a whole area with a sign that said 'express yourself’ with pens and big paper pads on the walls and a blackboard, evidently to try and stop this, and still it was happening :( How sad :(

We looked around, had our croissant lunch, I ran away from some wasps as usual, and we went to look around the grassy zone some more. We were doing this when my phone which I had been keeping in my shirt (luckily??) because I had no pockets started to ring. It was mom doing a video call! How funny! How lucky I happened to have my phone somewhere I would actually notice this call! What fun!

Back on the mainland Kate had another ice cream from the place we found yesterday and I had an iced chocolate from this chocolate shop that turned out to sell really fancy special Marseille chocolate made with olive oil?? It was a very very posh. Also the drink just came with a plate of lil chocolates? Hek yes!?

It was to be the Castle Day so we got the bus around the port to the other side where you can visit the Palace which is at the top of the hill at the mouth of the harbour on the other side. You couldn’t go in (I dunno if it’s actually a castle still inside or if it’s used for the Uni at the moment or something :o) but there was a park all around it and it was really nice and there was actual grass at this park! Actual grass and it smelled like grass and it was so clean and nice and fresh 😱

We’ve been saving our pennies so today we were to have dinner in style at the cheapest restaurant we could find in the masses of restaurants which line the street running around the port. It was cheap and it was very tasty and we were sharing a dessert so the friendly waiter split our cake between two plates and plated it nicely?? So friendly! 😱

We were gonna use the bikes that they have all around the city to bike back but we were too sleepy and tired so we just got the metro back. Very, very wool 👌🏾

Why I’m so nuts for YOI

YOI flipped my switch in a big way, in a head-over-heels way, in a Victor-dancing-with-Yuri-at-the-GPF-banquet-and-realizing-this-was-it way, and I’ve been thinking lately about why it is that I love it SO much. There are so many reasons. A million reasons. A gazillion reasons under the cut because I’m not as cruel to stick this much text at once into your dash.

Sexual desire can be a positive thing: In most Asian media (dramas, anime), sex and desire is usually treated as deviant- if you want it, you’re a slutty slut or a comical horndog, or it has to be way crazy kinky nonconsensual porn shit. In most Western media, it isn’t treated well either- I just finished watching Big Little Lies and sex is all about shame, rage and violence in that series. But in the world of YOI, Victor is super hot for the cute guy who challenged his rinkmate to a dance off, then proceeded to strip and pole dance, THEN CAPPED IT ALL OFF BY SWEEPING HIM OFF HIS ACTUAL FEET, and then he choreographs a skating routine about SEXUAL LOVE about it and ends up making Yuri skate it. A lot of fandom seem to write Yuri off as a delicate flower who knows nothing about sex, but were you all watching the same series as I was? He basically has a sexual awakening as a preteen watching stupid pretty Victor twirl around with his stupid pretty hair and covers his entire bedroom with sexy posters of him (there are posters where Victor isn’t even skating, they are more or less posters to jack off to). He literally says that he is the only person in the world who can satisfy Victor. I’m shit at translating but the Japanese dialogue and narration in the series (I should just watch the blurays because I find the english subs on crunchyroll distracting and not particularly accurate) is... pretty sexy too. They’re in love, but they’re also SUPER attracted to each other, and that’s ok- better than ok, really, because great sex is a cornerstone of healthy and happy long-term relationships. 

The fact that they’re both the same gender is never an issue: No angsting about sexual orientation. Neither party wishes they were a girl (which happens every so often in yaoi). No pandering or queerbaiting. This series is a straight-up romantic comedy: person A meet-cutes person B, person A and person B fall madly in love. No one gives them any shit about it (except Yuri Plisetsky, but my head canon there is that he has an unconscious crush on Yuri Katsuki and is mad as shit that stupid perfect Victor swooped in and stole him away) 

No stupid romantic subplot friction: No super retarded misunderstandings that could be avoided by just talking to each other (I’m looking at you, every Korean drama ever made), no evil love rivals, no contrived situation with parents or other authority figures trying to keep the main couple apart. Their main issues are what most couple’s issues are: proper communication, compromise, and learning what it means to operate as a unit. I also love love love that when Victor gets jealous and possessive in the Yuri on Stage skit, he doesn’t demand to know all the details of whoever he thinks Chihoko is, he doesn’t close off and make it so Yuri only ever talks to him, he drunkenly scrawls “Surpass Chihoko” on Yuri’s naked back, and then proceeds to climb a public edifice naked and scream his love from the top. And when he demands Yuri do it too, instead of telling him he’s crazy or to get down or having a fight, Yuri just strips and gets up there too, to make his stupid hungover husband feel better.  

A realistic portrayal of love: Victor and Yuri are attracted to each other, but the reason they fall in love is that they really get along and like being around the other person. They have fun, they make each other laugh, they excite and surprise each other, they slowly open up to each other, they bicker and squabble because being in love doesn’t mean your partner doesn’t annoy the shit out of you sometimes. Most anime and media treat falling in love like some magical thing that makes your life instantly perfect, which is not the case in real life. They also treat falling in love as a mysterious and sudden thing you have no control over, and honestly for the most part it is, but that’s limerence, not love. Victor and Yuri actually fall in love and stay in love. Their lives are immeasurably better with the other person in it. They fill in each other’s spaces. 

Realistic portrayals of mental conditions: I stay away from saying mental illness because I think anxiety and depression are things most people experience at some point in their lives- some just have it to a deeper or lighter degree than others. Yuri and Victor are both high functioning- Yuri in his anxiety, Victor in his depression. A lot has been said about Yuri’s anxiety, especially given than he’s the narrator of 11/12 episodes, but I was actually hugely impressed by the nuanced and realistic depiction of Victor as a high functioning depressed person. He’s clearly bored and sad and lonely, hugely craving human connection and feeling cut off from people because of his godlike status: every connection he has is in relation to his sport, and they all want something out of him, so when he falls in love for the first time, he ends up becoming a coach because he thinks that’s all he has to offer Yuri to make him fall in love with him too. I honestly don’t think Victor has ever thought about being a coach, nor is he interested in staying one after Yuri: the entire thing was basically a crazy grand gesture to make the cute boy from the banquet fall in love with him (well, in his defense, it worked, so good job Victor). Victor’s only real connection seems to be to his dog, which struck me as enormously and terribly lonely. Hopefully we’ll learn more about his family in Season 2. 

Realism about bodies and how much fucking work it is to be hot: I just spent an hour and a half at the gym so this is on my mind LOL. Most anime and tv shows gloss over the sheer amount of work it actually takes to be a certain shape, and I already knew from episode one where Yuri gains weight after his depression from a seemingly endless onslaught of FML that I was in for the good shit. Any hot person you know who claims they just sit on the couch eating hot wings all the time is a goddamn liar. I’m no longer sample size because I don’t have time to spend 2-3 hours in the gym every single day and I like to have some fried chicken and chips and ice cream now and again. Now, I had some discussion with male friends when I forced them to watch it last week as to how feasible it was for Yuri to lose all that weight in basically a week, and they claim it’s doable / they’ve done similar before, but I think part of episode 1 shows Yuri as an unreliable narrator who seems to think he’s WAY fatter than he is (which is part of the nature of anxiety), so he was probably, like, in actually 10-15lbs or so heavier than his GPF weight vs how he’s portrayed in the anime in the comical fatty-fat-fatty sequences. Victor is also super cut but it looks like he’s always biking/skating when Yuri’s skating /probably spends a lot of time working out to keep that amount of muscle tone (he’s also clearly vain af so you better believe he is all about the gainz).

Body positivity about squishiness: And this is not in a pandering or condescending way. Victor is affectionately into Yuri’s squishy off-season tummy in the Yuri on Stage skit, and Yuri’s objections are only really that they’re in public and around other people while he’s playing with it. I always interpreted Victor’s saltiness about Yuri’s weight / forcing him to get back to his GPF weight when he first arrives in Hasetsu not as Victor actually caring about Yuri staying hot or not, but as Victor being a petty little bleep because he’s annoyed that he showed up just like Yuri asked and Yuri kind of ended up giving him a weird awkward cold shoulder instead of fucking him into the nearest mattress. And in any case, speaking of saltiness...

People can be petty af because they’re human: Victor is a lowkey asshole (the kind of person who’s so beautiful and talented they’ve been able to get away with just about anything because everyone gets blinded by lasers of HOT PERSON IS TALKING TO ME) but still immensely likeable. And Yuri is a lowkey asshole too- see his HAAAAH reaction to Victor’s baiting about past lovers, or his constant poking of Victor’s hair whorl. He’s really likeable too. Sometimes it’s ok to be petty af.

I really wish that a series like Yuri on Ice had been around in my formative years. One of the biggest reasons I love it so much is I feel like it can have such a positive influence on young people- on people who struggle with anxiety and depression, with people who struggle with simultaneously being on top of their game and not feeling good enough. More importantly, I think it gives a really great primer on the RIGHT way to be in love. My college best friend was a philosophy major and one of her professors once said in class “If it wasn’t for movies, no one would ever fall in love,” and looking back on toxic relationships I’ve been in and people I shouldn’t have slept with, it’s most likely I used tv and movies as a primer for what seemed like socially acceptable behaviour for love: tumultuous drama as PASSION, jealousy and possessiveness as being marked by a great love, sex as a substitute for emotional intimacy. Being older and wiser and through the gauntlet I know a lot more now about what’s good for me, but if I’d had something like Yuri on Ice back in my teens, I think I would have made some better decisions. So I’m glad a series like this is out there now. Hopefully it’ll make a new generation of young’uns (or even old’uns!) make better decisions than I did (well, most of them, anyway. I had a lot of fun, and you should too)

great ball: favorite pokemon gameit’s between crystal, emerald, and sun/moon and now it’s story time!crystal as a kid i thought i was “cursed” with... we bought it and whenever i wanted the new pokemon game my dad would always have me trade it in until i was old enough to buy on my own around when the ds games came out. there was some other game i wanted to trade in my it didn’t have the sticker, so i replaced it and for some reason they didn’t think it wasn’t a pokemon game and took it. as a result, i couldn’t trade in crystal! especially since it was the last gba game i got/owned. i came to love it cause it really came in handy during the dark ages pre gen 2 remakes AND BOY WHEN GEN 2 REMAKES WERE ANNOUNCED I WAS SO THIRSTY! i would check all pokemon news sources DAILY and i played through crystal 3 times that summer lol that aside, i also played crystal a bunch as a kid. it was the only game i had when 3 category 4/5 hurricanes hit here and i was out of school for a while. playing it kept me sane as we were stuck inside with no power. also since yellow was my first game and i didn’t get to choose a started, i really loved being able to pick my starter which is why typhlosion is my fav ;-;

emerald cause i really love gen 3... gen 2 too but it was SO AMAZING seeing the first commercials for sapphire and how everything was full color and how things were improving! everything that was added was so much fun to learn? abilities, berries, held items, etc... i played through sapphire a whole bunch until i let a friend borrow it and he never returned it... then emerald came out and i was stressin so much to get it... i was finally able to get my sapphire back after telling on the guy to his mom while i was crossing the street >:) i was so happy i went home right away and started playing a new game and i felt such a nice rush? you know the rush when you start a new pokemon file. it made me so happy... ALSO the battle frontier was so great AND gen 3 was the last pokemon games where kids in my neighborhood cares about pokemon. i had sapphire first and most others had ruby. the games even got this kid who was a real fuckin bully towards me to become friends... we ended up trading and i finally got a zangoose and we were gonna reenact the legendary battle between kyogre and groudon but he left cause he was visiting... even tho most of my memories are with sapphire. gen 3 remakes were also highly anticipated CAUSE MY FAV? i remember waking up and people were like GEN 3 CONFIRMED and i immediately woke tf up and i was screaming i kissed my pokemon emerald poster my acne cleared up and all was right in the world... and boy.... BOY... wheni started up alpha sapphire and watched the opening i had to put it down. i started crying. i’m crying right now. i love gen 3. i chose emerald cause of it’s addition of animate sprites and battle frontier. also i still have it...

sun and moon WAS SO GOOD AND SO MUCH FUN!! last summer was hard but sun and moon news kept me going and was the light in my day. i was super excited like everybody else and UGH rockruff. i remember when the news of green and red being in the game came out. i was driving to class and i always get there early and my friends were like “CAKE LOOK AT THE POKEMON NEWS” and when i saw my boys? all grown up? i started crying in my car. there are pictures and this guy was concerned but i was okay cause pokemon. i am honestly a little upset that blue wasn’t in there (or green for the female character idk i go by the japanese names cause of pokespe) but i understand since she technically doesn’t exist on her own as a character...... but still... looks at people’s art of all three in alolan longingly at what could have been. THE POKEMON ARE SO GREAT TOO! i just wish it was easier to find alolan pokemon in game? like a lot of alolan native pokemon had lower encounter rates than the pokemon from previous gens... which kept me from getting bewear in my first play through >:( (idk why i didn’t trade... i was too engrossed in the story). I LOVE ALL THE ALOLAN FORMS. i remember there being “leaks” for alolan arcanine where it was water type.. a girl can only dream... also everybody in sun in moon is my friend and family. hau? my best friend. lillie? my best friend? kukui? my dad. burnet? my second mom. olivia? my wife? gladion? remember when he said we were friend, hah, what a kidder, we’re also best friends. ALSO GUZMA THEME AND VS TAPU GOES OFF. like when i am driving and i hear the little intro part for all skull battle themes but then it goes to the start up of guzma’s  i AM READY TO JAM. I WILL PULL OVER AND START JAMMING. also the champion theme makes me cry every. single. time. incorporating the pokemon series theme... how could they do this? don’t they know i gotta drive without tears in my eyes?
