heads up! volleyball au. seungkwan dealing with a minor injury (twisted ankle) + mentions of cheol being injured during sport in past.

seungkwan swears his entire body is on fire, and all he can do is focus on the bag of ice you're pressing against his ankle right now. he should be watching the team practice now. he should be paying attention to joshua's serve, or listening to jeonghan as he coaches from the sidelines, or watching to make sure no one else fucks up and lands on their ankle like he did trying to block mingyu's spike.

instead, he's just thinking about the way you have his injured ankle in your lap, an ice pack pressed against it. vernon ran to get something to wrap it in properly, this makeshift bag of ice the result of you combining a plastic bag with ice from the ice chest containing bottles of water.

"seungkwan?" you say quietly, and he finally drags his eyes away from the bag (and your hands) to look at your face. "it's okay if you're upset, y'know. accidents happen." the side of your hand is pressed against his skin as you shift the bag a little, careful to keep it from dripping onto him as it melts. "remember when cheol landed on his shoulder instead of his chest when he dived? he was fine." you pat his leg. "you'll be, too."

"he's not allowed to play," jeonghan says offhandedly, not looking over. "not until he sees a doctor and recovers." he looks over, smiling at the two of you. "i'm sure they'll watch over you for today, seungkwan."

his face is burning hotter now. shut up, jeonghan. shut up shut up shut up--

"i will!" you chirp, happy as can be, as if your very existence didn't set seungkwan on fire a little. butterflies in his stomach and all. butterflies on fire at this point, considering you're so casual about all of this. "don't worry about it. i'll take good care of him," you pat his leg again, that same fond smile on your face. "okay, seungkwan?"

if it were anyone else, he'd be flustered about it. maybe he'd even playfully jab at them. but with you, he just averts his gaze for a moment. "thank you," he says in a small voice that'll net him teasing once you're out of earshot. "i'll take care of you, too, if you need me."

and maybe he thinks it's stupid for him to have said it, considering he was injured and mentally kicking himself... but your smile soothes away those thoughts all too easily.

kuroo being one of the most influential people in tsukishima's development by taking a mentoring role ("we are each other's teacher"), in part emphasizing principles he himself learned from nekomata ("the first thing to teach is the joy of doing"), turning into an adult kuroo who makes his career into helping people learn to love volleyball ("cmon world lets play volleyball together, let's all get absorbed by the fun"), always pursuing the goal of lowering the net for everyone, what if i was crying like literally kuroo topping the list of haikyuu characters that just entirely embody the Point of the story
