My guy Laios is a digimon kid not a pokemon kid.

Due to his childhood he'd likely relate to the whole aspect of the protags getting spirited away into a fantastical otherworld or choosing to go there more appealing than folks just existing in one

the types of designs that Laios likes lean more the way of digimon than pokemon. He likes overdesigned critters with clashing mishmashed parts and oozing cool factor over anything else. You saw how disappointed Laios was with Marcille's cute simple familiar designs.

Laios wants to have friends who like him for who he is and Digimon's whole thing with the chosen children and their deity-assigned best monster buddies who love them no matter what would be more appealing than Pokemon's monster pets thing.

Laios seeing the kids in Digimon Frontier getting to be digimon and the kids in Digimon Tamers biomerging with their digis and goes "Fuck yeah!"

Part of the reason Laios is infatuated with monsters is because they're dangerous, aggressive, and eat people and when he was young he used them as a vehicle for his violent fantasies towards the people who bullied him and his sisters and the villagers who were bigoted to his sister. Digimon most certainly hits those same boxes so much more than Pokemon. Digimon fights can get down right grizzly and the digimon themselves pose a much greater potential threat to humans. Hell, in some series in the Digimon franchise digimon are making organized attempts to wipe out humans or simply preying on them.

Given the kinds of subject matter that Digimon gets into with its human cast, it would likely have a much better catharsis factor for a young Laios. Especially the series in Digimon that involves issues with older and younger siblings.

I can picture a young Laios relating to Matt, Izzy, Davis, Ken, Takato, Jeri, etc (there are so many) waaaaaaaaay more than the main folks in Pokemon.

Being able to relate to Ken and Takato but also be made very uncomfortable in being able to relate to them and probably prompting some internal reflection

He'd make so many fan digimon. He'd love the og digimon artstyle

Would enjoy the sheer veriesty that Digimon games offer and would have fun with the bullshit hard ones where you have to raise digimon in specific ways to get certain evolutions

In conclusion, Laios is team Digimon. But you know who would love Pokemon? Marcille. Marcille would love Pokemon and Viva Pinata.

went into viva pinata pocket paradise thinking it was gonna be like a lesser, mobile game-esque version of the first game. but it turns out that 1. limeoceros is one of the few pinatas from the mainline sequel that was added to pocket paradise, and 2. you can pet your pinatas and it makes them happy.

so actually i think this is the best game in the franchise now <3

As much as I gush about/LOVE Oddworld, even hyperfixating on it occasionally. They are actually my second favorite game franchise!

My FAVORITE game EVER is actually Viva Pinata Trouble in Paradise! My ADHD brain loves collecting aspects in games and Viva Pinata is absolutely PERFECT for it! That and the pinatas/animals in the game give me so much serotonin! I also grew up with this game.

It is also INCREDIBLY charming! The music is whimsical, the pinata designs are adorable, the human designs are creative (the whole aesthetic is as well), the game is chill (for the most part), you can change the color of your pinatas, you can DRESS UP your pinatas, you can get mutated pinatas called Wildcards, GUHHH I SERIOUSLY CANNOT DESCRIBE TO YOU MY LOVE FOR THIS GAME!

It's a game I recommend to everyone! It is available on the Xbox S, X, One, and 360! Though be aware, the S, X, and One have weird texture glitches for some reason... At least it does for me lol.

Though unfortunately, I don't think they have it for PlayStation... At least that's what one of my friends told me who has one.

generally i am the kind of person who is pretty at peace with franchises i really enjoy Being Finished. i would almost always rather that something i love end than get endless sequels forever. i think there are so many great stories and projects being made nowadays at all levels of industry that being married to a franchise over a medium is increasingly denying yourself great stuff and promoting the interests of IP holders over the creatives who make them

the singular exception to this is viva pinata. it is a black mark against our species that there are not more viva pinata games. there is no price too high that we as a society should not pay it to make more viva pinata games happen, forever. this was peak human creation and everything since, no matter how brilliant, has been tarnished by the ambient injustice of living in a world without new viva pinata games in it

okay not to say youre wrong youre Very Valid for advertising all of these but half of these franchises are fucking dead. fossil fighters hasnt had a game since 2014. viva pinata has been dead since 2008. magi-nation got one game in 2002. yokai watch is alive, but it basically killed Level-5 in the west due to poor sales.

Pokemon has the monopoly. I hate it. I hate it SO FUCKING MUCH, but if you have to prop up corpses around the table just to say that it doesn't have a monopoly, that's not a great argument.

Just there are so many mon games out there. So many. To say that Pokemon has the monopoly really shows that you haven't been looking around the genre.

I didn't include things I played and didn't like for personal reasons like I couldn't get the camera to work right in Dragon Quest Monsters and just I'm shit at camera aiming or like the Shin Megami Tensei game I picked up where I just didn't personally like the designs for the humans and the whole do certain events by X time in the story is a bit complicated for me and my memory and focusing issues. Or just the consul issues I was having while trying to play Spectrobes led to me not having a decent time playing.

But who knows? You might like those games.

Why do you think sonic games have been tightening their scope after Unleashed. Every main game after has had a less than a $60 price tag. Do you think Unleashed underperformed in Sega's eyes and they scaled back their budget/staff, etc in response?

That was absolutely the case. Sonic Unleashed was the first mainline Sonic game after Sonic 06, and I think there was rightfully a lot of spillover of emotions from that game.

Because "good" and "bad" are subjective, right. A sour mood one day can make something look really bad, but if you circle back around to it days, months, or even years later, you might have a completely different experience with it.

A lot of people in 2008 were very, very nitpicky about Sonic Unleashed. It's a game that has problems, sure. But it's an incredible game that does a lot of things extremely right, too, and it established basically everything that lead to Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations.

But a lot of people still saw it as "the game that followed Sonic 06." So they complained about hub worlds, and human NPCs, and side quests, because those were things it shared with Sonic 06 and therefore they were still points of contention.

Sonic 06 sold a weirdly high amount. It was a "Platinum Hits" title on 360, and even got included in a special charity bundle (with Shrek and Viva Pinata Party Animals, I believe), where all proceeds were donated to some children's hospital thing. It was the first Sonic game of a new generation and it sold a lot of people on the idea of being this big, impressive thing.

Sega clearly banked on Unleashed being more successful, given how much money they were willing to spend on Sonic Unleashed. It was an ambitious, high-budget, bleeding-edge game. And it pulled it off better than most Sonic games usually do!

But the wounds were still fresh after Sonic 06. It was the biggest disaster the Sonic franchise had ever had at that point. All that hype burned a lot of people.

So I imagine Unleashed didn't sell quite as well, yeah. Which probably lead to Sega trying to find ways to scale things back in future games. The profit from Unleashed did not support its budget, so they adjusted where necessary. Smaller levels, less story, less intricate detail, etc.

It's always made a lot of sense to me. It sucks, but the ripples of Sonic 06 reverberated outward like that in ways I don't think people remember anymore.

Self esteem issues are back again, this time about my interests.

I feel kinda dumb and childish sometimes. Especially for the things I like/enjoy. That coupled with being raised on a steady diet of toxic masculinity makes me hesitant to enjoy certain things, even when I’m alone. Alone with nobody to prove anything to, and I still feel like I can’t enjoy certain things or I’m lesser. Oops.

rn it’s Viva Pinata, something that basically became a comfort to me growing up (Even though the franchise, as far as I’m aware, is basically dead now.)  Me playing it and kind of wanting to draw something based on it and my brain goes: “Ew, this stuff is for kids, how embarrassing. Don’t waste your time on something like that.” Same goes for stuff like mlp, which makes me unimaginably conflicted. “Real men wouldn’t like this show.” even though I know it’s not true.

And lately, it’s gotten worse, because now that I’m in the self-ship community, all I imagine is one of my f/os looking over my shoulder and judging me for liking this stuff, thinking I’m immature, or thinking less of me generally for it, and I just- help???

"Let's Make an Animal Crossing Game!" was so funny and really insightful! Are you planning on sticking within the realm of Nintendo games for this series, or would you expand into other console franchises? I'd love to see your take on the Viva Pinata series, it hasn't had a new game since 2008 but I think it would be right up your alley! It's another garden simulation game that also takes some cues from Pokemon, and I've been dreaming of a modernized reboot for years~
