About pacts
The game is kinda ABOUT the pacts, but somehow I feel like the concept is not fleshed out enough in canon. So I’m fixing that! I am making them so fluffy, I am developing them into the magic QPR bond of my dreams lol
(Brief mentions of blood and sex under the cut, be warned)
Ok so. In the game, the pacts have four key functions: 1, allows the human to give the demon binding orders. 2, gives the human a way to amplify the demon’s abilities and strengths. 3, implied, gives the demon a way to do the same thing for the human, to lend them their own strength. 4, allows the human to summon the demon basically for free. Have him on speed dial, I suppose. Summon with no ritual, no spell components, no nothing except an incantation.
That’s cool, I like that. But like,, iirc the game says nothing of the mechanics of this, or how the pacts feel!
I think pacts should be a mildly psychic connection. Nothing like what Beel and Belphie have going on, and no actual ability to put words telepathically in your demon’s head (and vice versa), but like… an Awareness of each other, muted and vague when you’re not actively reaching out through the pact, but just enough that like,, you can feel them vaguely in the back of your mind. You know they’re alive, and you can mentally reach for them if you want to.
When you ARE using the pact, it doesn’t HAVE to be for one of the aforementioned four functions. It can also be… just a mild mental ping, like tugging on a string or tapping them lightly to get their attention. When they reach back, the bond opens up a little bit more, to allow the passage of emotions, flashes of memories, even awareness of about how far you are from each other and what direction you’re in. All entirely voluntary, no invasive mind-reading, but you can mentally share what you want with each other.
I feel like the pacts don’t have to imply romance. But, they DO imply partnership—not necessarily exclusive partnership, in fact probably it isn’t an exclusive sort of thing by default. Plenty of demons have multiple humans, and plenty of humans have multiple demons. The sort of partnership that doesn’t really have a standard box to fit into by average human reckoning. Queerplatonic partnership. Close, emotionally intimate, committed, devoted. But not necessarily having anything to do with attraction, romance, any of that.
These pacts can be purposely strengthened, to make communicating with each other like this easier. Strengthening the signal, if you will.
The key to that is two things: emotional intimacy/trust, and sharing vitality (or however you wanna phrase it. Vitality, life, essence, soul, etc. I mean this to encompass a few different things, and none of those words is a perfect fit for all of them. Let’s say there’s an untranslatable word in infernal that fits perfectly). Specifically, the human and the demon make mental contact through the pact with the intent to strengthen the bond, then do whichever of the sharing vitality/essence/life/soul things that they feel like doing.
For example:
Kissing. An emotionally intimate thing to do that involves sharing fluid. DNA counts as essence, and this is a way of combining it. A textbook, effective way to reinforce a close bond. Doesn’t even strictly have to be romantic! It CAN be for sure, and usually is, but like… you can also kiss the homies out of platonic affection if you want to. Especially if the homies in question are demons in a pact with you. This is normal and chill to them.
Also, simply sharing the same air! Pressing foreheads together (think keldabe kiss minus the helmets), noses touching (i think this is called kunik). Sharing breath. This absolutely counts as sharing vitality. Also, afaik this is a thing people would only have the instinct to do with someone they really love. It’s such a soft, peaceful thing that doesn’t make sense in any other context but trust and devotion and emotional intimacy. Super good way of reinforcing a close bond!
Obviously sex works for this too. Obviously. It ticks all the boxes: reinforces a close bond, combining vitality/essence, can be very emotionally intimate. Probably the most textbook option.
In the other direction, possibly not quite as expected but totally works if you think about it: bloodshed. I’m sure it’s common enough in the ritually combining blood sort of way, but also… think about fighting at your pacted demon’s side, or getting wounded and then being rescued (seems more likely, especially in part 1), and both of you bleeding. Physically supporting each other, spilling your vitality onto each other, each wiping blood off of the other and patching each other up in the aftermath of an altercation. Really, you can’t get more devoted and trusting than that.
Food, as well. Taking a bite of something, then feeding a bite to your pact partner. Your food is the source of your vitality, in a similar way to breath. It’s your life. Sharing food with this intent absolutely works. It works even better if it’s food you made, and/or familiar food that you love in such a way that it’s part of your identity. That way, it works twofold. The physical effect of metabolizing the food is your vitality, and the identity aspect—feeding a loved one something that resonates with who you are—is sharing your essence/soul.
This one’s a bit of a reach, but I think it still works—tears. Experiencing something that makes both pact partners cry, be it a sad story, an emotional conversation, painful events, etc. Supporting each other through that, feeling compassion for each other, comforting each other. There’s no shortage of intimacy, devotion, and trust in this. On both an emotional and physical level, this counts as sharing soul/essence/life.
Sharing soul/vitality/essence/life (whatever the fitting word for this in infernal would be) on purpose like this would absolutely bring pacted partners closer together. Strengthens the bond between them, helps them understand each other, reinforces the love. Strengthen a pact enough and eventually you won’t even need the incantation to summon that demon.
_______
(I am planning to put this in my rewrite of obey me season 1 with my own MC, of course. Once I progress enough to start posting it, that is lol)
(but also, maybe, if I find the inspiration, I might write gn reader!MC oneshots with these concepts. Pls let me know if you think I should try! Also, anyone is more than welcome to use this for your own writing if you want)
EDIT: I wrote a oneshot! The time when my MC found out that strengthening pacts is a thing, with Beel and Mammon. Here it is!

Trouble Incorporating Sub-Plot
Anonymous asked: I’m currently working on a project and I know it’s going to have romance in it but I notice I'm always leaning harder on one element over the other. If I’m writing a contemporary piece that deals with going off to school and finding yourself— I have no idea how to realistically spin the romance, my mind is too stuck on the other component of the story. So currently with my fantasy-romance, I’m leaning heavier on the romance, and am unable to connect a plot. It’s like my brain zooms in on the element and forgets everything else. Any advice?
(Ask edited for length)
Even if you're not normally a planner, this is a situation where you may benefit from planning before you write, at least until you get the hang of incorporating subplot.
The first thing to keep in mind as you plot is that stories revolve around conflict. In plot-driven stories, the conflict is external (in the character's world.) In character-driven stories, the conflict is internal (in the character's self.) In stories that are both plot-driven and character-driven (the majority of stories these days), you'll have both an external and internal conflict. Conflict is essentially a problem that needs to be resolved in some way. So, an external conflict is a problem in the character's world that they must somehow solve, and an internal conflict is a problem within the character's self that must somehow be resolved.
Next, let's consider the genre and needs of the stories you want to write. Most contemporary fiction is character-driven rather than plot-driven. Going off to school creates or exacerbates internal conflicts while finding oneself is the process of resolving said conflicts. Romance is also an internal conflict, so you will need to figure out which will be the main conflict and which will be the subplot, and then pace them out accordingly. The key will be to find ways to connect these conflicts in some way. Is the romance going to further exacerbate whatever existing internal conflict makes this character need to find themselves? Is the romance going to complicate whatever path the character is taking on the way to find themselves? Is the romance going to help the character find themselves? Knowing how these two conflicts fit together, and push and pull against each other, will be vital in plotting it out so that the main conflict stays at the forefront.
With a fantasy containing romance, the external conflict of the fantasy (defeating the evil wizard, winning the throne, destroying the cursed object) will be the main conflict, and the romance will be the subplot. In other words, you will plot out the course to resolving the external conflict, then find ways to work the romance into the scenes and events required to resolve the external conflict. My posts Story Arc (Main Plot) vs Subplot and Plot Before Subplot talk a bit about working in subplot, and my post Turning Romantic Main Plot Into Subplot helps with keeping the romantic subplot secondary to the main plot.
Now, if you were writing romantasy, where the romance is the main plot and the external conflict of the fantasy is merely a framework for the romance to play out against, I think it still helps to plot out the external conflict needs/events first. Then you can figure out how the romance is playing out against those events, but instead you'll focus on that romantic development more than the actual external conflict.
Hopefully, by planning everything out in advance (for a few stories, at least) you can get the hang of keeping your focus on the conflict that you want to be at the heart of your story.
Happy writing!

I dedicate the Fungous Fisher to any fan of Plague Doctors wondering what these folkloric folks might encounter in their travels. Unfortunately, only an arm and glove are visible as I usually assume ample images of these menacing medics can be found elsewhere. Though I’m not entirely adverse to occasionally drawing them, often I feel the need to flesh out their universe with creatures and gadgets fit to facilitate more complete stories. If you desire more info on the Fungous Fisher than is provided above, or are curious about what my writing looks like when I’m not acting like a carnival barker there is another window into my “Afflicted Lands” universe below.
An Introduction to the Fungous Fisher - They loom out of the gray mist, motionless and serene. Only the most basic facial filters are enough to avoid the spores they emit, yet a special fear of the Fungous Fisher pervades our outposts long after occlusion seals us in.
Insects, a key component of the miasma’s early incursions into the outside world, thrive in the presence of the Fisher, living and breeding in the lands they maintain when the sounds of buzzing wings fall to silence elsewhere. Night and twilight flyers dominate, for they embody survival for the afflicted creatures, who are just as much vital ecology as they are wards of our state. The rise of suburban communities and consequent ubiquity of lawn grasses have increased cases of the lichenosis that gives rise to the Fishers. While technically a symbiosis, the fact few, if any, desire the condition renders it a disease.
Patient survival in the chronic stage depends on maintaining home districts and not allowing a fear of the buzzing things they grow and harvest to cloud our judgment and lead to persecution. Unique mutations affect the former weeds and grasses of Fisher residences, powerful compounds useful in plague medicine.
Excerpt from the compiled histories of Darcy Milo.

Part deux of the Ash Wastes terrain focus is up, and since now I'm paranoid that anything I don't control directly is likely to be disappeared off the internet, I've elected to simply archive it in its entirety below the fold.
[H3] LADDERS, HATCHES AND RAILINGS
As any good ganger will tell you, a good vantage point is key to getting the drop on your rivals. To help fighters clamber around your Habs and gantries, the Thatos Pattern kits come with a host of extras - including a versatile set of ladders.
These ladders are modular, to allow for alternate strut heights. They're separated into a top section, plus short and long middle sections that allow any combination. They also can hang freely on the bars of the platforms, allowing you to combine them with whatever terrain configuration you have gone with.
These curved railings, vital for any sniper lurking near the edge of a significant drop, are also very easy to add to any build. These can be attached without glue, and will sit on the curved bar on the platforms.
Want to add some additional details to the underside of your platforms? Both of the platforms and the Hab have fittings on the underside to attach accessories from the Sector Mechanicus terrain kits – such as cables, chains, and ladders – further adding to the variety of build options on offer.
The platforms are also the same thickness as Sector Mechanicus floors, which allows for the Sector Mechanicus railings to be used on them.
For that little bit of extra detail – not to mention more cover – the underside of the roof has fittings for a long ladder section (D39, for those of you checking your construction guides) to glue into, giving gangers easy access to the roof.
Speaking of extra detail, each Hab comes with four tension cables that attach to slots on the central strut. These can be assembled in two ways – down to the base, or up to the Hab. Or if your strut is tall enough, and you’ve got cables spare… both!
Need to clamber up a stack of Habs? You can add a ladder attachment (D40) to the bottom of a ladder. This allows it to neatly and gluelessly join two curved bars, giving you an easy way to access a roof, a second Hab, or a mounted platform.
The Habs were designed to allow for easy movement of models – the roof sections don’t need glue, so you can easily take them on and off, and there are plenty of wide openings in the sides of the Habs. The kit also comes with panels, however, allowing you to fill some of these openings in. Combined with the careful placement of ladders, this can make for an interesting battlefield where fighters must climb and dodge their way through a maze of modules and walkways.
Need to keep the sun off your face… not to mention that pesky rain of radioactive dust? The awning can be built in 2 ways. It can attach to a balcony piece (A18), or you can attach two parts (D13 & D14) Which will let it attach to the curved bar.
The Hab walls have fittings for aerials, a hanging lamp, or an anemometer… which is useful to let you know when a storm is on the horizon!
The kit also comes with a shelf of stowage, and an electrical box, which can be glued onto the blank wall or blank panel. These kinds of details are great for marking out some Habs as workshops, armouries, or Rogue Doc chop shops.
There are several separate components, such as aerials, a searchlight, and radar, which can be glued on the corresponding fittings found on several other parts. Much like the stowage, these can mark out a vox-equipped Hab, or a full comms centre.
Need an ash wastes objective or just an interesting piece of terrain? The strut top made from D15 and D16 has the same fittings as the Hab, to allow for two of the aerials to attach to it and create a communications array.
Strut D17 actually has six fittings to attach aerial accessories to, allowing for plenty of customisation and stacking.
There are two aerial features (D33 and D34) – a wind gauge and a communication emitter – that will both fit onto the top of the vertical aerials.
Want to connect a Hab roof to a Sector Mechanicus walkway or Zone Mortalis level? Like the platforms, a Hab roof has curved bars – and with the Hab being the same height (to the curved bar) as a Zone Mortalis column, this means it is the correct height to place floors.
A Zone Mortalis walkway will sit onto the vertical bars on the platforms and the Hab roofs. With these being curved, they can pivot and tilt at different angles.
Like the railings from Sector Mechanicus, Zone Mortalis and the Gang Stronghold, the railings will fit onto both of the other terrain set floors and vice versa.
The walkways fit the same gap as Sector Mechanicus floors. Use C15 (not C16) to attach the two together – this allows for several walkways to join two Habs or platforms.
That’s all for now – hopefully, these articles have given some insight into the versatility of the Thatos Pattern terrain sets, and inspired you to plan your very own ash wastes outposts!

Index of Vocabulary i use in my Agreste&co AU :)
i didn't make any of these up, they're from the index in the back of the Lockwood &co books by Jonathon Stroud !! this is just a basic index, but i may add more vocab in future when i get further into the comics. (changed some names of stuff to fit the Au)
Agency, psychical investigation - a business specializing in the containment and destruction of ghosts. there are more than a dozen agencies in London alone. the largest two, (the Fittes agency and Bourgeois agency) have hundreds of employees; the smallest, (Agreste &co) has three. most agencies are run by adult supervisors, but all rely heavily on children with strong psychic talent.
Talent - the ability to see, hear or otherwise detect ghosts. many children, though not all, are born with a degree of psychic talent. this skill tends to fade towards adulthood, though it still lingers in some grown-ups. children with better-than-average talent join the night watch. exceptionally talented children usually join the agencies. the three catagories of talent are sight, listening and touch.
sight - the psychic ability to see apparitions and other ghostly phenomena, such as death glows.
listening - the ability to hear the voices of the dead, echoes of past events, and other unnatural sounds associated with manifestations.
touch - the ability to detect psychic echoes from objects that have been closely associated with a death or haunting.
the problem - the epidemic of hauntings that has affected the world for over 50 years.
source - the object or place a ghost is tied to and can enter the world through.
Type One - the weakest, most common and least dangerous grade of ghost. type ones are scarcely aware of their surroundings, and often locked into a single, repetitious pattern of behavior.
Type Two - the most dangerous commonly occuring grade of ghost. type twos are stronger than type ones, and possess some kind of residual intelligence. they are aware of the living, and may attempt to do them harm.
Type Three - a very rare grade of ghost, first reported by Marissa Fittes, and the subject of much controversy ever since. allegedly able to communicate fully with the living.
relic-man/woman - someone who locates and other psychic artifacts and sells them on the black market.
death-glow - an energy trace left at the exact spot where a death took place. the more violent the death, the brighter the glow. strong glows may persist for many years.
Ghost-touch - the effect of bodily contact with an apparition, and the most deadly power of an aggressive ghost. beginning with a sensation of sharp, overwhelming cold, ghost-touch swiftly spreads an icy numbness around the body. one after another, vital organs fail; soon the body turns blue and starts to swell. without swift medical intervention, often in the form of Adrenalin injections to stimulate the heart, ghost-touch is usually fatal.
GHOST PROTECTION
lavender - the strong, sweet smell is thought to discourage evil spirits.
running water - it was observed in ancient times that ghosts dislike crossing running water. in central London a net of artificial channels, or runnels, protect the main shopping district. on a smaller scale, some house-owners build open channels outside their front doors and divert the rainwater along them.
ghost-lamp - an electrically powered streetlight that sends out beams of strong white light to discourage ghosts.
Salt - a commonly used defense against type one ghosts. cheaper than silver, and often used in salt-bombs which shatter on impact, spreading salt in all directions.
Silver - an important and potent defense against ghosts. agents use it to coat their rapiers, and a key component of agents source-seals.
magnesium flares - a metal canister with a breakable glass seal, containing magnesium, salt, gunpowder and an igniting device. an important agency weapon against aggressive ghosts. sometimes referred to as Greek Fire.
chain-net - a net made of finely spun silver chains, used to seal up sources.
silver-glass - a special 'ghost proof' glass used to encase sources.
rapier - the official weapon of all psychical investigation agents. the tip of the iron blades are sometimes coated with silver.

Bassoon Insurance for Students and Young Musicians
As a young and aspiring bassoonist, you have invested countless hours practicing, honing your craft, and developing a deep connection with your beloved instrument. Right? However, the road to becoming a seasoned bassoonist can be fraught with challenges, one of which is safeguarding your valuable asset.
In this blog, you will learn about the importance of bassoon insurance for students and young musicians, exploring the key reasons to protect your instrument, what to look for in a policy, and how to make the most of your insurance coverage.
The Value of Your Bassoon
First and foremost, it is vital to recognize the worth of your bassoon. Whether you are using a beginner model or a high-quality professional instrument, bassoons are not cheap and worth immense care. Even student models can cost several thousand dollars, while professional-grade bassoons can reach into the tens of thousands. For students and young musicians, this represents a significant financial investment, often requiring years of savings or support from parents and mentors.
Your bassoon is not merely an object. You know, it is a gateway to your musical journey and a key component of your education and career. It is important to acknowledge its value, not only in monetary terms but also in terms of the time, effort, and passion you've poured into it. Recognizing this value is the first step toward understanding the need for insurance.
What to Look for in a Bassoon Insurance Policy?
When you decide to get a dedicated bassoon insurance plan, it is crucial to choose a policy that suits your specific needs. Take a look:
Coverage amount
Determine the value of your bassoon and select a coverage amount that fully protects your investment. Keep in mind that the value of your instrument may increase as you progress in your musical journey, so consider regular appraisals to ensure accurate coverage.
Premium costs
Insurance premiums can vary widely based on factors such as the value of your bassoon, your location, and the specific policy. Get quotes from different insurance providers and compare the cost against the coverage they offer. While it's essential to find a policy that fits your budget, remember that opting for the cheapest policy may not provide the necessary protection.
Deductibles
Understand the deductible, which is the amount you will need to pay out of pocket before the insurance coverage kicks in. A higher deductible often results in lower premium costs, but it also means you'll have more significant expenses if you need to make a claim.
Additional coverage
Consider whether you need additional coverage beyond standard instrument protection. Some policies offer coverage for accessories, cases, and even loss of income due to instrument damage.
Insurance provider's reputation
Choose an insurance provider with a solid reputation in the music community. Read reviews and ask fellow musicians for recommendations. A reputable provider will make the claims process smoother and provide peace of mind.
Making the Most of Your Bassoon Insurance
Once you have obtained an insurance policy, here's how you can maximize its benefits:
Document your bassoon
Take detailed photos of your bassoon, including any unique identifying marks or features. Keep copies of purchase receipts, appraisals, and any relevant paperwork. This documentation will be invaluable if you ever need to make a claim.
Regular maintenance
Proper maintenance of your bassoon is essential. Regularly servicing your instrument can prevent damage and ensure it remains in optimal playing condition. Insurance providers may require evidence of maintenance in case of a claim.
Secure storage
When your bassoon is not in use, ensure it is stored in a safe and secure location. Investing in a quality case with robust locks can provide an extra layer of protection.
Read and understand your policy
Understand the technical terms and conditions of your insurance policy. Understand what is covered and what isn't. If you have any questions or doubts in your mind, no issues. You can always get in touch with your musical instrument insurance provider to clarify.
Happy music-making!

Stack The Deck - PART 5
CW: reluctant Whumper, way too much exposition, card games, insults, alcohol, fade to black gore
PART 4 ⇽ [Masterlist] ⇾ PART 6
・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・・
There was no way to tell how much time had passed now, the barricaded window frames didn't even let a sliver of sunlight crack through them. Elliot doubted to get any kind of power or heating going, though the temperature inside remained at a continuous chilly level. If he had to guess, focusing on what his gut told him, they slowly approached the late afternoon. Not that this changed anything, the brightness of Morris' table lamp dictated any change of lighting, he didn't want to find out what would happen if the battery ran out.
What started as a quick match of Crazy Eights turned into hours of shuffling, dealing and frustrated sighs Morris let echo through the tension between them. Looking the man up and down, with long stubble slightly darker than his chestnut curls, Elliot noticed how he also started to relax into this new dynamic. If only for a second he could forget how they came to be here, his designated company would deserve to be this enjoyable.
This satire of a game night was originally supposed to get him more leeway, along with acting as some sort of damage control. His anxiety-induced fits had irritated his opponent visibly, so he was lucky to be given a chance to make this right.
Make him like me, whatever that means-
To humiliate him back was a tempting option, but only if he decided that his bones weren't vital anymore. Sadly, both were well-versed enough in the children's game to keep each other on edge, dragging a single round into infinity.
So what's the right ratio of wins to satisfy a sadist? Elliot had to ask himself that question after a particularly tricky match, as his victory let Morris' face bloom with an unhealthy crimson hue. 2 to 1? Or even a 70 percent success rate?
Only one truth was disclosed to him: The man really loved Crazy Eights. Taking every round as a fight for survival, Morris chewed his nails down to a stump, frantically looking at his hand and back towards the upcard of the waste pile. Elliot decided to lose this round again, preferably before the air was squeezed out of his throat.
Their game was barely interrupted, aside from a bathroom break and dinner consisting only of a protein bar. Elliot couldn't remember when they properly started to talk about all the world and his brother, but Morris tried desperately to enthrall him for the local baseball team, just to be rewarded with fake enthusiasm flowing into trivial queries about sports. The questions were genuine, though, Elliot couldn't keep him going otherwise.
Card games: fun. Screaming and crying: no fun. Doesn't really sound like a textbook sadist. Not that made a difference, at the end of the day, Morris was just a man. A violent, reckless one, but still a man.
I can work with that.
It was sad in a way, how much he seemed to enjoy his unwilling company. Maybe that's what the wanted all along: friends for rent.
What felt now like an age-old question continued to nag the back of his mind, the key component to his escape: Why him?
If he was acting hard to get, then Elliot would need to get a little more brisk.
"So, what do you do when you're not teaching me basic sports knowledge?" he asked, using a beat of Morris' pause to start the offense. He wouldn't spell out his social security number, sure, but it was worth a shot.
"This." Blunt in his reveal, Morris didn't even meet the eyes of his captive, too busy planning out a winning strategy. Elliot found himself to be less than underwhelmed, hoping for a helpful twist he could use as bait.
"We can't all sell stocks, now can we?"
"I...don't. Who told you that?" The ransom aspect made a lot more sense now, someone really had to hate him to make up those kinds of lies. His only answer was a shrug.
"I'm a part-time office clerk." he tried to explain himself, not sure if it would really help his case, "I-I write you an email if the gas prices increase again or your energy was shut off, but I have nothing to do-"
"Thrilling, really." Morris responded dryly, only slightly irritated he played the seven of clubs.
He does make losing difficult. Ignoring the couple of clubs already in his hand, Elliot drew another card. Walking on eggshells with that kind of opponent is risky, I shouldn't push too hard.
"Your turn," he said instead of another lecture.
He lost this round gladly, managing to turn the atmosphere into a relaxed caution of both parties again. During his shuffle to prepare the next one, Morris seemed to reflect.
"What about the other part? The one where you're not a corporate slave?"
So you don't know everything, alright.
"I use the office to finance the half of my life I really love: Music!" he explained, hoping to get some bonus points for dramatics, "When my colleagues and I start to play together-"
"You're in a band?!" During his short stay at Morris unusual establishment he already got used to being interrupted, at least the bait finally worked.
"Well, I-"
A short buzzing stopped him again, but this time they stayed quiet. Morris just got a message. Eyeing the phone on the table with a breathless intensity, Morris just had a mild sigh to offer: "Don't get too excited now, it's not what you think."
He laid the stack of cards face-down onto the table, careful not to scatter them everywhere, and fished for an object in his inside pocket. During the rummage through the leather jacket, Elliot didn't dare to speak, not wanting to ruin the sprout of hope inside him.
Morris finally got a grip on his desired object, pulling out another phone. Elliot would recognize the slick wooden case anywhere, his father bought it for his birthday. The screen was marked with fresh thin cracks, probably caused by his drop on the wet concrete.
I fell, he grasped, No! He made me...
Without warning, Morris reached over the table to grab the other man's right hand, still rubbed open at the wrists. Elliot let himself go limp, like it was already trained response, while his thumb was pressed against the front of the screen. As quickly as Morris grabbed him, he also released.
With now unlimited access to his data, Elliot could do nothing but gawk at the audacity with which his captor seemed to navigate through his phone, reading the newest message in silence.
Keeping it on - practically running around screaming to be arrested. He was no sadist, just a big fucking idiot. Elliot prayed that he would act exactly as stupid as he seemed to be. His colleagues ought to be too angry with him to just ignore his absence. A call had to be made, one he didn't accept, so they started to worry...
"Brooke wishes you a speedy recovery!" was all Morris had to say. Brooke Hoffstetter, first violin, just a few rows in front of him. "A bit late, but still very considerate of her."
"Why?" he whispered, his hope slowly shrinking.
"You have a nasty stomach flu and couldn't make it to practice, it seems," Morris casually told the man he had the nerve to impersonate, "Let's hope I don't catch anything."
"Fuck you!" The words just tumbled out of Elliot's mouth, unable to hold it back anymore.
He felt like crying again, the same helplessness overcoming him in waves, just like it had many hours beforehand. He thought he made progress, but he was exactly where Morris wanted to have him. Nice and quiet, stuck to a chair. No one was coming.
"You know, I like you better when you stop shoving your head up my ass," he continued, a sound close to a chuckle carried his words right to Elliot's ear, turning fear into anger.
"At least they don't hate you for coming late again. She claimed that your conductor was pretty pissed, but don't worry, everything is taken care of. I'll just send Brooke a thumbs up, she seems so well organized."
The inside of his mouth had started to bleed. Elliot bit down on his cheek with such a force, so any other insults would be kept at bay; he wouldn't fall for this obvious trap.
Fucking with the feelings of a desperate man: fun. Being insulted: fun. Good to know.
"Cute, how much you enjoy your work," Elliot began to press out between clenched teeth, the metallic wetness still coating them.
"Don't be like that, I have to make sure everything is running smoothly."
He began to shuffle again, slower than usual, matching the rustling of the cards with Elliot's controlled breathing. Still smiling, but in a more understanding way than before, it looked like even the abductor didn't want to ruin the mood further. "Ready for another round?"
Elliot never felt ready in the time he spent here, but the exhaustion lingered even heavier on him now. His bound legs screamed for release while his still pounding head wanted nothing but to rest, the dirty foam mattress looking awfully comfortable.
"I'm tired. Can I lay down again?" he asked, polite enough to charm every degenerate in a four-mile radius, but not Morris. Suddenly on edge again, he looked back blank.
"Listen, I know this is stressful for you. We can play something else if you like. Do you know Mau-Mau? Or Switch?"
Desperate, all of a sudden. Tough shit.
"Isn't that the same game all over again?" he asked, digging through his worn mind to recognize what the topic was even revolving about. "I don't even know what time it is, I just want to sleep for a bit."
He didn't trust Morris a single inch, but the fatigue would be his main obstacle in the coming hours, so nothing granted him much of an alternative.
"Around five in the afternoon. I bet it's just your blood sugar, Elliot, you can handle that! I'll even do quartets if you like."
Digging through the duffle bag, he pulled out another protein bar, proudly pushing it towards Elliot. He had never seen a man so desperate for a game of cards, it was mind-boggling. "We play for a bit, and then we take a break, okay? Asshole, you know that one?"
"I actually know a lot of them." The biggest sitting right in front of me. Still, he didn't even touch the well-meant peace offering, instead resolving to lean back in this chair, making himself as small as possible.
"We'll make a deal, alright?" Elliot said after a few seconds, "Worked fine until now, so it shouldn't be a problem, right?"
"I'm not negotiating with you. Even though I do appreciate you finally growing a backbone," Morris replied hesitant.
"You tell me why this is all happening, and I do whatever you like." Wording, you fucking moron. "Damn, I'll even play... I don't know, blackjack with you."
It was the worst offer Morris had ever heard, but he would accept it one way or the other. Far over twelve hours had passed, without a single reaction or phone call. If he was forced to do something he ought to avoid at all costs, Elliot had at least to understand why. He didn't seem to be half as bad as Morris had imagined. So he gave in.
--------
They went back to Crazy Eights again, naturally. A last round which kept one of the parties busy enough to ignore the looming threat inside the room, tainting their domestic game night. With five cards still in his hand, Morris lost without question. He wasn't a sore loser, but the truth still tasted bitter on the back of his tongue. This would take time none of them had left.
"So," Elliot asked again, his voice shaking so badly it nearly broke at every other syllable, "why are you keeping me here? Did my parents accept a sketchy loan or something?"
Morris just now understood that the poor man was under the assumption his mother would ignore violent threats of a stranger. No wonder a few hours in duct tape messed him up so deeply. He wondered in what manner he should break the news to Elliot, to avoid any ugly tantrums. Now, with his arms freed, he could do a lot more damage than just yelling; a fact the dull pain between his legs kept reminding him of.
"Your ex..." Morris claimed, at last being filled with a sense of release.
"Which one?" Elliot asked back, though not even needing an answer. He knew exactly who brought him into this mess.
The beat of silence stressing his statement was suddenly broken by a heavy and rich laugh, making the walls around them shake with honest delight. Morris bent over himself for multiple minutes, being shaken by his own wit for what felt like an unhealthy amount of time. At one point it sounded like choking, and Elliot prayed to no one in particular to make it real. Finally calming down from his sudden lapse, Morris just had one thing to say: "You get around, huh?"
"From time to time."
Elliot didn't understand how he could remain so calm inside. Gallons of anger or betrayal had to explode any minute, filling him up with a deep rage to outgo all his previous fits. But there was nothing to wait for, whatever he expected left him behind a long time ago.
So he just stayed still, watching Morris wipe some tears of joy out of the corners of his eyes.
"What did she do?" he dared to ask after his captor settled down again.
"Mhh?"
"Amber, what did she do to you?" Of course, it was her. When his life went down the gutter, you could place bets she was standing right on the sidewalk.
"Amber, yes..." Morris looked so much smaller for a second, like it physically pained him to even say her name. "She owes me money, among other things."
"Fuck, I can get you money. I'll pay you back whatever she forgot to. With interest, I don't care."
Over the past hours, he had grown accustom to Elliot's whining and bargain, it was like second nature to him. Morris shouldn't punish him for that, it's just what happens in these kinds of circumstances.
"It's a matter of principle, you don't fuck me over and then disappear from the face of the earth." Yeah, sounds like her.
"We- we broke up months ago. I'm not useful for any of this," Elliot whispered desperately, still not seeming to grasp the position he was in.
"She still loves you, don't you know that?"
"Sure, she loves me so much that she doesn't even bother to answer you," he spit with all the venom he had left. It didn't help Morris already helpless expression. "Lets me rot in a fucking asbestos den..."
„Don't be so bitter about that. She broke up with you for a reason."
He sounded so convinced in his delusion, Elliot caught himself agreeing with him for a second.
"And don't worry about yourself, we have time." Liar.
"Service's working?"
"Yes."
"And you're sure she'd seen the pictures?"
"Yes," Morris said unbothered, lying more to himself than the twitchy stick of a man in front of him.
Obviously, she had seen them, after all these hours, she had seen it all. The threats, the blood... All for a phone call she was too proud to make. Morris realized his chronic misjudgment with a sour expression: She didn't take him seriously, she never did, and this farce wouldn't change a single thing about it. But maybe he didn't have to carry that burden alone anymore...
"Why did she end it?" he asked, this time genuinely invested.
Elliot, covered in dried sweat and blood, still looked like a top-drawer son-in-law. Someone who would braid her hair if asked nicely enough.
"First of all, I did!" the twitchy stick spit at him, his feelings stewing up after months of simmering under his heart, "Second, that shouldn't concern you." He was fed up with the small-talk.
"Tell me, or I gag you." Morris threatened with aloof implicitness, acting more and more offended as his delusion fell apart. Elliot wished every kind of misery upon this captor, including Amber's ongoing company.
"Cheated on me with her fucking weed dealer." Tension was thick between them again. "Among other things."
"Oh, sorry." It was comical, in a sort of way. Elliot scoffed quickly, ignoring that Morris apologized for the only crime he hadn't committed.
"I have nothing to do with her anymore. Don't even know where she lives now. You should have taken any of her friends, not me. She probably won't recognize me anymore!"
"Would have saved you a lot of stress, if you knew her current location."
The sad undertone Morris' claims carried didn't do anything to help Elliot accept his helplessness. If he made it out alive, he would live in the nearby monastery, single for the rest of time.
"I know where her friends live," he tried instead, not a sliver of guilt in sight. He knew exactly where they were hiding, being dragged to all the awful house parties turned out in his favor after all. Morris eyed him slowly, humored by his sudden proactivity, and admittedly impressed.
"You'd rat out her friends?"
"So what? Are their kneecaps more valuable than mine?!"
His captor smiled again, thin and knowing.
"You really are the same. You and everyone who came before." Elliot didn't know what to answer, so he let it be.
"I understand that you're upset, and believe me, I would like to watch her obnoxious circle to shut up in an instant. But it has to be you, it's just how it is."
"Definitely not personal, I see."
Retorting with a sigh, Morris stood up for the first time in hours, ready to end this try at a peaceful mediation. Elliot really was a handful, he decided and smirked to himself. Pulling a wooden wall panel aside, digging through the empty space behind it, he grabbed a dusty bottle which was still filled to the brim. No need to scare him anymore, he could be open for once.
"Last time I was here, I spend so much time with solitaire, I nearly went insane. So I decided to make some moonshine; makes the whole thing less lonely!"
You seem to have a problem with that. Can't blame Amber for running. Wishing he had been just as successful as his ex-lover, he accepted the small glass Morris presented him with.
"A shot for every time we lost!"
With 34 to 13, if Elliot counted correctly, he would get alcohol poisoning before the sun even rose again. Maybe the better alternative.
"I don't know if-"
"Wasn't a question, Elliot." He poured them each a shot, the clear liquid spilling over the edge. Elliot couldn't handle his booze very well, a lightweight through and through. Not wanting to be pickled by his oh-so charming captor, he thought of an alternative.
"We could play for that, starting fresh. Each time one of us loses, they have to drink."
"I don't think I'm in the mood anymore." Expectantly, Morris stared him down.
Taking the first shot as a well-meaning sign and desperately trying not to spit it out in an instance, Elliot bent to his will again.
"Could take longer than I expect." Morris mumbled, also downing his own. Liquid courage, he told himself.
"But we have time, right?"
"Yeah, sure."
Silence settled over the pair. The quiet clicks of nails against glass was the only noise disrupting the thick atmosphere. Morris was the first to speak again, slowly lifting the bottle to pour another round onto the leftover droplets.
"Drink," he pressed out, not even bothering to keep the act up. "Please don't make this difficult, come on."
Despite his stern tone, Morris' continued to stare blankly at the stack of cards, still itching to be used again. Even though both men knew that wouldn't make a difference anymore.
--------
Morris tried to shake him back to consciousness, once or twice. Spread out over the table, Elliot long dropped his ability to stay awake; the mixture of low blood sugar, exhaustion, and dehydration was to blame for it.
Slowly, Morris grabbed his shoulders to lean him back onto the backrest, but keeping his hands firmly on the now soaked wood. Quiet murmuring was the only sound of the last half hour; at least Elliot appeared way less miserable and tense in his drunken state and if Morris had to guess, he wouldn't be able to feel what was about to come.
He warned her insistently, multiple times in the last few hours, and even tried to call again. Nothing. She witnessed it all, he was sure, but decided just to watch the message preview instead of taking the commitment seriously.
He didn't plan for this to happen, not really, but that what he thought he deserved for underestimating Amber. He let the drowsy head tip back to better reach the gag still bound around Elliot's neck, gently putting it back into place without any protest. It would be a bummer if he accidentally bit his tongue, Morris honestly enjoyed the little banters they had.
With Elliot's fingers now forcibly spread apart, Morris reassured himself this gesture was a necessity, a sign for her to finally take his demands seriously. Examining the dazed man beside him, he wondered how he managed to free himself from her. Nobody just breaks up with Amber like that.
The edge of his old switchblade pressed lightly into the base of the ring finger laying flat against the wood, teasing the joint apart. But Morris hesitated, not entirely sure why so. The messier, the better, he thought by himself, knowing exactly how much she hated the horror movies they watched together.
It wouldn't be fair though, he recalled, and very unhygienic for the both of them. Imaging a brand-new game of cards, the deck smeared with various bodily fluids a human could provide, he was certain that Elliot would never go for another round. Even if his severed finger was just laying next to him, no threat would convince him otherwise. It was better this way. Tidy.
Morris didn't think about Elliot when he positioned the knife far lower on the back of the hand and turned it around, the point of it facing the ceiling. He didn't think of the whole day they now knew each other, more or less, and he also tried his hardest to ignore the light twitch shooting though his own body.
He thought of Amber and how happy they could be together, if she would just answer - as he let the far end of the knife smash down into the bones underneath, again and again.

Year in Review: 2022
Damn what a year. Not his best but definitely one that we will probably look back on as the defining year of the 2020s for the character. Held off on posting this until practically the last minute just to avoid any final surprises for Superman in a year that's been full of them.
Comics
On the comics side this was another great year. PKJ brought the Warworld Saga to an overall satisfying conclusion, wrapping up a storyline that brought the character to one of his lowest points ever at the start, and ended with Superman ascending triumphantly to new levels of power. While he fell short of his stated goal in differentiating Mongul from Darkseid, he did successfully create a Warworld brimming with future storytelling potential, and his Mongul is an entertaining foil for Superman regarding parental influence shaping their character. The post Warworld Saga issues have been solid, and I thought he, Williamson, and Taylor handled the restoration of the secret identity in Action Comics #1050 as best as they could have. Sad to see Federeci go but he gave us some all time great Superman covers and interiors regardless, and there's always a chance he and PKJ might reunite for a Superman BL book.
Mark Waid managed to actually live up to the hype surrounding his return to DC, with his World's Finest series being easily the best thing he's written since Daredevil. Convinced me to care about Magog outside of Kingdom Come for the first time ever, no mean feat. Champions had made me want to keep Waid far, far away from any teen characters ever again, but his writing for Dick, Kara, and the Teen Titans has been shockingly great, to the point calls for Waid to write a Titans book no longer strike me as utterly insane. Dan Mora of course is a key part of the book's success, his visuals being critical to selling the Neo-Silver Age atmosphere, and he managed to do the impossible: make Composite Superman cool. Many artists have tried to modernize that design, Mora finally succeeded by tossing everything out but the basic concept of a Superman/Batman merger. Starting from that simple idea he created a new design that captured everyone's interest.
Tom King stands out as someone who did excellent work with both Superman and Supergirl. His Dark Crisis Superman tie-in was a powerful exploration of Clark regaining the lost years with Jon. Burnham as always was the perfect fit for showing both characters wrestling with deep seeded emotional issues, and plenty of gore filled fisticuffs. Meanwhile he gave Kara her first standalone "classic", which has proved quite popular in trade sales judging both from King's own words and the Amazon sales list that I've seen. Bliquis Evely's art is for Supergirl what Frank Quietly is for Superman, scenes like the one where Supergirl takes red kryptonite to go fight space monsters are permanently seared into my brain due to sheer beauty and spectacle.
Elseworlds wise we had Venditti and Torres giving us the Superman III that never was with Superman '78. An entertaining execution of the standard "Brainiac shows up and tries to bottle Superman/Metropolis" plotline with a few twists that wrapped up this year, it had a few genuinely novel ideas that shaped my perception of Brainiac. Venditti also did a World of Krypton mini that retold the story of Krypton’s final days. Writing was mediocre but Oeming’s art is beautiful and was enough to keep me from dropping the book. Russel is doing a great job with a "Life Story" for Superman in Space Age, even if I wish he didn't give Batman as many pages as he does. Would buy an Absolute just for all that Allred art regardless, Allred is a vital component in my enjoyment of that series. Over at the Marvelous Competition, Gaiman and Buckingham are at last giving us the resolution to their Miracleman run. Unsurprisingly I am greatly enjoying it and very excited to read where it goes.
Sadly while Clark had a great year, and Kara didn't do bad herself, there were a number of crashes and burns too. Jon and Kon had a horrible year. Not since Byrne has a new Superman been given such a totally broken foundation, with Taylor doing his damndest to smother any potential Jon ever had. At this point I no longer care about Jon until they get him out of Taylor's clutches, which thankfully may be soon judging by his words in some recent interviews. Only bright spot for me regarding Jon was that, terrible as Dark Crisis was, Williamson wrote a really enjoyable and scrappy Jon there that reminded me of why I was interested in him being Superman in the first place. Kon meanwhile was in a garbage event tie-in that did zero of worth with him. 2022 ends as one of Conner's worst years ever easily.
Media
Outside of comics the simplest word to summarize Superman's treatment would be chaotic. Cavill makes his shocking return to the role for film, greeted by joyous fans!... who don't show up for Black Adam which bombs hard. Yet word is released that Man of Steel 2 is in the works, to much anticipation and speculation!... until Gunn and Safran get hired to run DC and promptly cancel MoS2, with Cavill acknowledging that his time wearing the cape has come to an end. Paired with this announcement is word that Gunn is writing the script for a new Superman reboot, and that Coates/Abrams project continues to be worked on as an Elseworld project. Other than Clark being already established as Superman, we know absolutely nothing about the proposed film, which didn't stop meltdowns across the Internet as the Cult finally realized that the Snyderverse was well and truly over. Momoa may be switching to Lobo for the DC cinematic universe, and if they're already talking to him about playing the role, it's a safe bet the first place he'll show up is the new Superman movie. The new DCU "Gunnverse" therefore is betting it's future on Gunn being the first one to succeed since Donner in adapting Superman, which means that the new head of DC is personally invested in ensuring Superman succeeds because it's his job on the line. At least he mentioned on Twitter that he loves Morrison's Superman, and he's been posting Andy Kubert art from Up in the Sky! which is very encouraging to say the least. Going from Snyder to Gunn might end up being the best upgrade Superman has gotten since Donner took over the first movie.
Another live action Superman got his second season this year and it was judged to be a step down from the first. Hoechlin, Tulloch, and Parks all did excellent with what they were given, and the actress playing Parasite tried her best with the flimsy characterization and lines she had to deliver. Jon's actor departed the show and was recast, whether that will cause a change in direction for the character is up in the air.
Animation was the best medium for the Supers outside of comics. Young Justice S4, while retreading old ground regarding Conner being reduced to a weapon, at least treated him better this year than the comics did. He got his happy ending with M'gann, and the show's take on the Zods was the best since Shannon. The season ending on a post credit tease for Kara becoming one of Darkseid's Furies, which is never getting followed up on unless that deal with Amazon bails the show out again, is hilarious. Fucking Weisman chooses to end the series on another big Darkseid tease despite knowing that it wasn't renewed for more seasons! If YJ is finished for good this time then I am at least satisfied with how Conner's story ended, and don't mind if that is the end. Jon and Krypto got entertaining animated movies too with Battle of the Super-Sons and League of Super-Pets, neither of which was anything special, but certainly worth a watch for anyone craving more Superman content. Whether either will see a sequel remains to be seen.
Video game wise we got the first WB cross-property brawler in Multiversus, with Superman in the starting line-up. Found the game fun enough, although it did nothing to diminish my craving for a proper Superman solo game. There were also multiple Superman Easter Eggs in Gotham Knights that referenced him directly or members of his family. Perhaps teases for future DC projects, perhaps not. Not sure I even want WB Montreal to attempt a Superman game after the Wattpad fanfic tier bullshit they submitted for Gotham Knights. Outright Games is also making a fun looking JL: Cosmic Chaos game that has the team dealing with Mxy.
Future
Next year is Superman's 85th and it looks like it will be a milestone anniversary indeed. First up we have PKJ's Action book switching to be more Superfamily focused starting in January, pitting them against a revamped Metallo. He's teased that after the Metallo arc is done, coming up the next arc will feature another revamp of a Superman fan favorite Rogue, a Multiversial Supermen team up is happening, Superman and Constantine may end up working together, and revealed he has ideas for Maxima, Toyman, Mxy, and Bizarro. Then in February Williamson is on a new Superman ongoing with art by Campbell and Dragotta, with a tone aiming to be reminiscent of the STAS cartoon. Finally we have Taylor launching a new Jon mini where he teams up with Val-Zod to stop Ultraman from killing variants of his dad across the Multiverse. Totally on board with PKJ, interested in Williamson, skipping Taylor entirely. Waid is continuing on World's Finest for now, and has teased there may be more spinoffs coming out of that series. I expect something involving Magog to come at some point in the future.
Waid and Yang are also overseeing Lazarus Planet which is an event that will shake up the status quo by giving characters new powers and changing the powersets of those who already have them (such as Jon getting the Electric Blue powerset). Hoping to see Waid and Yang use Clark, Jon, and Kenan in the event.
For upcoming Superman and Super adjacent characters comics that are for sure happening, first we have Steelworks by an unknown creative team (praying it's Pak writing) about John Henry Irons and Natasha working together to reshape Metropolis with their tech. Venditti is already writing a second season of Superman '78, no word on if Torres will return too. Porter's Superboy: Man of Tomorrow mini with Jahnoy Lindsay comes out next year. Premise is very similar to King's Supergirl series but this has been described as Superman meets DBZ which is definitely different tone wise from what King did. Christopher Priest is reuniting with his old Deathstroke team to make a Superman: Lost mini telling what happens when Superman is gone on a mission that's only a little while for everyone else, but centuries for him. Now's the perfect time to let Priest deconstruct Superman while the mainline books do more straightforward storytelling. While not officially announced, Waid and Hitch's Superman: Testament Black Label book is said to be coming out next year per Hitch himself.
More uncertainly there is Mark Millar saying he's having discussions regarding doing a Superman book for DC again, whether that's just typical Millar making a play for attention before announcing another Millarworld project remains to be seen. Geoff Johns may be working on a Legion book, his Flashpoint Beyond series teased a War of the Four Legions story that would doubtlessly result in the Retrobook ousting the Bendisboot from being the "canon" DC future. Would also no doubt restore Clark's childhood ties to the Legion and thus make Secret Origin canon in full. Scott Snyder talked about returning to DC in 2023 or 2024 for Metal 3 which he said before would be Superman focused, although given he described Death Metal as a "Wonder Woman" event he may not have the same definition on what constitutes that as the rest of us.
Live action wise, Gunn has said we will get more information about the coming slate, with Superman being one of the projects we'll learn more about no doubt, in Jan. S&L S3 promises a return to Metropolis, more journalism work for Lois, Intergang making moves, and a new Lex Luthor not played by Cryer complicating the status quo. John Henry Irons should remain a key character given Intergang killed his counterpart on the show's Earth, and is said to be involved going off of the solicit for S3. If the writers acknowledged the feedback on what worked and what didn't with S2 then I think the show can find it's footing again. If not I'll keep watching for as long as the Hoechlin/Tulloch/Parks trio keeps getting cool stuff to do.
Regarding animation we have two movies set in the "Tomorrowverse", Legion of Superheroes which stars Kara joining the titular team, and JL: Warworld which is our first movie following the Tomorrowverse incarnation of the JL. There's also a JL/RWBY movie which will have Superman in it, but having never watched any RWBY myself I plan on skipping it. Against all odds and in total defiance of what you would expect, WB chose to send the new Batman cartoon out to be shopped around and keep the new Superman cartoon for themselves as originally planned. A recent leak - which I won't share here - gave us some details on what the show has planned, and what I read has me eager as hell for MAWS to debut.
Despite all the craziness of the past year I feel incredibly upbeat going into 2023. The uncertainty surrounding Superman's film future has at last been put to rest, his new animated cartoon survived the purges, he's got a comic for everyone either out now or coming soon, the Superfamily and his Rogues are getting focus, and Multiversus broke the trend of all the video game Supermen being evil (although there's still Rocksteady's Suicide Squad game to contend with). Quite the turn around compared to where he was a decade ago, even if it doesn't give me everything I want.

Paddle Boarding Safety on Small Rivers
birdislandoutfitters.com | Instagram | Facebook | YouTube
Spring time is here and summer is just around the corner! What does that mean?!!! It’s time to hit the water! And this time of year provides wonderful opportunities for small river paddling.
Paddle boarding on small rivers can be an exhilarating experience, offering a unique opportunity to explore nature’s beauty and enjoy a super peaceful adventure. However, like any water-based activity, it’s essential to prioritize safety in order to ensure an enjoyable and accident-free outing. In this blog post, I’m going to outline key safety guidelines to follow while paddle boarding on these wonderful, and sometimes intimidating, small rivers. I’ll be covering equipment, preparation, and on-water practices among other tidbits.
Before we jump into the deep end here, I need to go over hydrodynamics, ie. what makes a small river tick, so to speak. Understanding these nuances provides valuable insight into the intricate workings of these vital water bodies.
Small rivers are vital components of our natural landscape, playing a crucial role in the hydrological cycle and supporting diverse ecosystems. To gain a deeper appreciation of these water bodies, it is important to understand the hydrodynamics governing their flow patterns and features. Some of the few key elements of small rivers which include flow velocity, hydraulic features, channel morphology, erosion, sediment transport and deposition. While all of these contribute to the unique characteristics and functions of small rivers, I’ll only briefly outline the first three:
Flow Velocity
Flow velocity is a fundamental aspect of small river hydrodynamics. It refers to the speed at which water moves within the river channel. The velocity is influenced by various factors, including the gradient or slope of the river, the volume of water, and the presence of obstacles or constraints. In general, flow velocity tends to be faster in steeper sections and slower in wider, shallower areas.
Channel Morphology
The shape and morphology of the river channel significantly impact its hydrodynamics. Small rivers often exhibit diverse channel forms, including straight reaches, meandering sections, and braided channels. Meandering channels, characterized by gentle bends and curves, are common in small rivers. These meanders create a complex flow pattern, with faster currents occurring on the outer side of the bend and slower velocities on the inner side.
Hydraulic Features
Small rivers exhibit various hydraulic features that result from the interaction between the flowing water and the riverbed. These features include riffles, pools, eddies, and backwaters. Riffles are shallow areas characterized by a rocky or gravelly riverbed, where water flows faster and creates surface disturbances. Pools, on the other hand, are deeper sections with slower flow velocities. Eddies are circular currents that form behind obstructions such as rocks or bends, while backwaters are calm areas sheltered from the main flow.
Now, let’s get into the Equipment you’ll need.
Selecting a Paddle Board
When paddle boarding on small rivers, opt for a stable and durable board specifically designed for calm waters. A wider board with ample buoyancy will provide better stability and maneuverability. Inflatable paddle boards are super popular these days. They’re fantastic for rivers. They’re basically a whitewater raft in a smaller package.
Recommendation (gratuitous plug): Bird Island Outfitters is one of the only companies out there that offers an inflatable paddle board with supplemental pontoons. It’s uber-stable and handles rapids like a champ. It’s also durable. This type of board is the best of all worlds when it comes to river paddling! Because it’s inflatable, getting to and from the river is a breeze.
Personal Flotation Device (PFD)
It’s recommended that you always wear a properly fitting PFD or life jacket while paddle boarding. At least you should have one secured to the board and easy to get to. There are a ton of options out there when it comes to PFDs. It’s important that yours is approved by appropriate safety authorities and designed for water sports. I like my PFD’s to have pockets for storing essential items like a river knife, sunscreen, etc. A bright color is never a bad idea either. It’s much easier to spot a bright color in the water if you happen to go swimming!
Leash
Attach a leash to your ankle or calf and secure it to the board. This will prevent the board from drifting away if you fall off, allowing you to easily retrieve it.
Helmet
Consider wearing a helmet and appropriate protective clothing, especially in areas with potential obstacles such as rocks or low-hanging branches.
Bow Line
Having a line (rope) attached to the front of your board can be helpful if you make a pitstop and need to secure the board while you’re away from it. You can also use the line to drag it while in shallow water. It’s an easy addition and one that’ll, no doubt, come in handy.
Anchor
It’s not a must have, but you may want one if you’re fishing or plan to stop often without getting off the board. Many outfitters offer small anchors for kayaks for a nominal cost. The old DIY makeshift anchor (rock + rope) always works in a pinch!
Pump
A must if you’re using an inflatable paddle board. No one wants to hear the dreaded “psssssssst”. But, punctures do happen. Rivers sometimes have sharp rocks, thorny bushes on the banks, paranha, rebar, sharp sticks, etc. Don’t be a fool. Bring a pump!
River Knife
A knife on a river trip is not a weapon, but an crucial tool in your boating kit. Not only could it be used for food prep, it can be used for quick field repairs. There are lots of ropes when it comes to river trips. A person could get entangled in a rope or snagged by their PFD webbing. The best river knives have a blunt point. The blunt tip will prevent knives that randomly pop out from embedding in boats or worse…soft tissue on someone’s body. And, always make sure it’s readily available… maybe securely attached to your PFD.
Water Shoes
Water shoes with tough soles are another must. You may not want them on all the time, but if you have to portage or jump off into questionable substrate for any reason, you’ll be glad you brought them. As a former whitewater raft guide, I’ve always liked Chaco sandals with the toe loop (for added security). But, neoprene wading booties are great too. It’s really up to you.
Water Hat
Need a say more. Personally, I like to use surf hats with chin straps when I’m on the river. Losing my hat is just not an option!
Sunscreen
Use bio-degradable sunscreen (less harmful to the environment) to protect against harmful UV rays. And remember to reapply on those long outings!
Pre-checks! Muy Importante.
Check Weather and River Conditions
Before heading out, consult local weather forecasts and river conditions. Avoid paddle boarding during severe weather conditions, strong currents, or when water levels are unusually high. This is especially important in the Spring depending on where you are. If you happen to be in the mountains, be mindful of snow runoff… especially on those warmer Spring and early Summer days.
Familiarize Yourself with the River
Research and gather information about the river you plan to paddle board on. Be aware of any potential hazards, including underwater obstacles, rapids, or sections with strong currents.
Inform Others
Inform a reliable person about your paddle boarding plans, including your intended route, estimated time of departure and return, and emergency contact details. This will ensure that someone is aware of your whereabouts and can take appropriate action if necessary.
Let’s Go Over On-Water Safety
Buddy System
Whenever possible, paddle with a partner. Having someone with you significantly increases safety and provides assistance in case of an emergency.
Start Slow and Gradual
Begin by paddle boarding on calm and slow-moving sections of the river. Practice basic paddling techniques and familiarize yourself with the board’s stability and maneuverability before attempting more challenging areas.
Maintain Situational Awareness
Always be attentive to your surroundings while paddle boarding. Observe the flow of the river, anticipate any upcoming obstacles or hazards, and maintain distance from other watercraft or swimmers.
Respect Wildlife and Environment
Avoid disturbing wildlife and respect the natural environment. Keep a safe distance from nesting areas, refrain from littering, and adhere to any local regulations regarding protected species or areas.
Stay Hydrated
Bring an adequate supply of drinking water to stay hydrated during your paddle boarding excursion. Dehydration can negatively impact your performance and decision-making abilities.
Practice Fall Recovery
Small rivers often have rapids. They can be a ton of fun to negotiate. They can also be treacherous. Falling off your paddle board is okay. Not only is it okay, it will happen… especially if you’re a beginner. Practice falling away from the board to prevent injuries caused by landing on it. Learn proper fall recovery techniques to quickly get back on the board.
Be Cautious of Strainers
Strainers are objects like fallen trees or branches that can trap and obstruct the flow of water. Be cautious of these hazards, as they can pose a serious risk to paddle boarders and kayakers. Stay alert and avoid areas with visible strainers. If you happen to find yourself swimming, keep your feet facing down river. As you approach the strainer, turn your body so you’re facing the strainer head on. Then, with the momentum of the current, push yourself over the strainer as you come into contact with it. Best scenario, avoid them at all costs!
No matter what you do on the river, the peaceful energy of these life giving systems can play a beneficial role in your general well being, both mentally and physically. If you choose to experience these places with a paddle board, good on ya!!! Paddle boarding is such a unique way to connect with nature and experience the power and the tranquility of these waters. By adhering to the safety guidelines outlined in this essay, you should be able to minimize the inherent risks involved while ensuring a happy, healthy and full experience on the water!

Installing a UV Water Purification Light: Step by Step Guide
Welcome back to Base Camp WNC. Today, we embark on an informative journey on how to seamlessly install UV lights in your existing water systems. UV lights are essential for purifying water, ensuring that it is free from harmful microorganisms.
Getting Started with the UV Light System The UV light system we're focusing on today is a 55-watt, 110-volt unit, designed specifically for the United States. It comes equipped with two holes at each end, accommodating water fittings. Versatility is key with this design; it can be mounted horizontally, vertically, or at any desired angle. The kit includes a slender glass tube, reminiscent of an elongated test tube. When assembling, slide this tube into the provided ring until it slightly protrudes from the other end. Ensure the ring's pyramid-shaped fixture is correctly aligned to secure the tube. This is a delicate procedure, and I have some tips to prevent the glass tube from breaking.
Assembly Tips
Slide the glass tube gently to ensure it doesn't snap.
The flange present will accommodate a seal, which when pressed, ensures a tight fit. Just let the glass tube protrude slightly and secure it hand-tight.
When sealing both ends of the tube, do not use pliers or exert excessive force. Gentle hand-tightening is sufficient.
Water flows between the glass tube and the metal frame, getting purified as it passes by the UV light, before exiting from the other end.
The kit I’m showcasing comes with one glass tube and three UV light bulbs. An important note on the longevity of these bulbs: while they may still emit heat and light after a year, their purification capability diminishes. Hence, an annual replacement is recommended. Handle these bulbs with care and avoid touching them with bare hands.
Installation Essentials For the perfect fitting, I've innovated with a shower fitting, designed to accommodate the PEX pipe. Applying two wraps of Teflon tape in the direction of the screw ensures a smooth slide. This is especially crucial with PVC components that may have residual bits from the molding process. Add a layer of pipe dope for a tight seal. The location of installation plays a vital role. In my setup, the spring below the house feeds a tank, which then directs the water towards the house. The UV light system sits in between. To ensure a sturdy installation, mount a board (like a 1 by 4) on the wall as a base. Once set, the PEX pipe is clamped onto this board with two plastic clips. This setup allows easy access for future maintenance or bulb replacement. The UV light system's transformer has an indicator – a green light – to show it's functioning.
Wrapping Up Installation can be swift with a bit of experience – it takes me about 15-20 minutes, having installed numerous before. But even if you're new to this, with the right guidance, it's a straightforward process. Thank you for joining us. If you found this guide useful, please like, share, and subscribe. For any further queries or if you need specialized assistance, feel free to shoot me an email or drop a comment on YouTube. I offer free advice and guidance online, but consultations or installations at specific locations would be a paid service.
Until next time, stay informed and stay safe!
