The Ultimate Guide to Buying Budget-Friendly Laptops
Introduction:
In today's fast-paced digital world, owning a reliable and efficient laptop is a necessity for students, professionals, and tech enthusiasts alike. However, with a plethora of options available in the market, finding the perfect budget-friendly laptop can be overwhelming. Fear not! In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the essential factors to consider when purchasing a budget-friendly laptop. Whether you're a student on a tight budget or simply looking for a great deal, follow these tips to make an informed decision and find the best laptop that suits your needs and wallet.
Determine Your Needs:
Before diving into the sea of budget-friendly laptops, take a moment to define your requirements. Consider what you'll primarily use the laptop for - studying, web browsing, multimedia, gaming, or work-related tasks. Understanding your needs will help you narrow down the specifications and features required for your ideal laptop.
Set a Realistic Budget:
Budget-friendly laptops come in a range of prices, so it's essential to set a realistic budget based on your affordability. Determine the maximum amount you are willing to spend, but also be open to slight fluctuations, as you might come across excellent deals and discounts.
Check Processor and RAM:
The processor and RAM are vital components that determine the laptop's overall performance. Aim for at least an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 processor and 8GB of RAM. This configuration will ensure smooth multitasking and adequate processing power for everyday tasks.
Storage Options:
Budget-friendly laptops often come with various storage options. Traditional hard drives offer more storage space at a lower cost, while Solid State Drives (SSD) provide faster performance. If speed is a priority, consider opting for a laptop with an SSD or a hybrid storage option.
Display and Graphics:
The display quality and graphics capabilities are crucial, especially if you plan to watch videos, work with multimedia, or indulge in light gaming. Look for a laptop with at least a Full HD (1920x1080) resolution and an integrated or dedicated graphics card.
Battery Life:
Portability is one of the key advantages of owning a laptop, and a good battery life ensures you can use it on the go without constantly searching for a power outlet. Aim for a laptop with at least 6-8 hours of battery life for optimal mobility.
Connectivity and Ports:
Check the laptop's connectivity options and available ports. Ensure it has USB ports, HDMI, audio jack, and any other essential ports you might need for connecting peripherals.
Consider the Brand and Warranty:
Opt for reputable laptop brands known for their quality and after-sales support. Also, check the warranty terms and coverage to ensure your investment is protected.
Read Reviews and Compare:
Before making a final decision, read reviews and compare different models. Look for feedback from users who have purchased the same laptop to get an idea of its real-world performance and reliability.
Conclusion:
Buying a budget-friendly laptop doesn't mean compromising on quality and performance. With careful research and consideration of your needs, you can find a laptop that offers excellent value for your money. Use this ultimate guide to make an informed decision and discover the perfect budget-friendly laptop that fits your lifestyle and requirements. Happy laptop hunting!

"God I am way too big for this apartment... Do you think the landlord would let us break the lease early to find a bigger place?"
"There's no way he'd do that, unless you wanna pay the rest of your rent right now." his roomate said from his room.
"Damn..." Jace said. No room in the budget for something like that, not with all he spent on clothes that he tore out of, or weekly trips to the butcher for food. "Do you think he'd make an exception for my... condition?"
"I don't think there's a doctor in the world that could give you a diagnosis for what you've got," His roomate paused for a second before adding on "And no, he wouldn't because he's a money-grubbing asshole."
Jace finished taking the picture with his phone and scrolled through his old pictures, watching him, in the same bathroom in the same pose, progressively get bigger as time went on. the change between this week and last weeks wasn't as large, but that would come... sometime this month. When was that again? He tapped through his phone until he phone his calendar. Next week. the full moon was next week. He had to be ready for that.
The big man walked out of the bathroom and into his roommate's bedroom. His roommate was sitting on his bed, typing away at the laptop situated on his lap. Jace flopped over onto his roommate's legs, letting out a big sigh.
"Okay, don't feel too sorry for yourself," Jace's roommate said. "'Oh no, I've been turned from a skinny twink into a 400 pound musclebeast from a werewolf curse, oh woe is me!'" He added in a sarcastic, whiny tone.
"It's not that, I just--"
Jace stopped for a second, lifting himself up off of his roommate's legs. It didn't bother him that he was growing, but it felt like he had no input on how fast it happened. Whether he went to the gym or not, no matter what his diet was, it didn't matter. Every month, he'd turn into a werewolf against his will, and afterwards he'd be bigger, hairier, stronger. He loved how it made him feel, but there was still a small worry in the back of his mind: would he recognize himself when he stopped growing? Would anyone?
"I thought I'd have better control of it by now."
"It's only been 6 months, which means you've had 6 times to practice." His roommate said, still typing away. "Nobody's good at something on their 7th try. You'll get there. And the lease'll be up in a couple of months anyway, I'm already looking for a new place."
"Really?"
"Yeah," Jace watched as his roommate's neutral expression turned into a smirk "I just gotta filter for 'pet-friendly' now."
Jace let out a groan that turned into a laugh. No matter what came next, he knew he'd be hearing a lot more stupid werewolf jokes in the future, and he didn't mind it one bit.

“Thank you everyone for your time. See you all for the final presentation next week.”
You slam the lid of your laptop shut—gently—at that last remark from your project lead. This project would make or break the reputation of the whole firm and everyone felt the pressure and tension. No big deal, just millions of dollars, everyone’s jobs, and the name of every person involved were on the line.
You paused for a while to take a moment for yourself when you were broken out of your reverie by a blunt force hitting the back of your head. You look for the source and glare at the black laptop bag in front of your face. Of course.
You looked up and were greeted with a smirking face and an eye roll. He looked like an angel with his platinum blonde hair and playful eyes, but he was the devil in disguise if you actually knew him.
It took all your willpower to remain seated and not burst out. That would not bode well for your professional image with most of the people still in the meeting room. There’s always been tension between the two of you since this project started. And you both knew the exact reason why.
───────────── ౨ৎ ─────────────
You were tasked to lead the presentation during the meeting last week. It was an important one because it wasn’t just the team in attendance—the whole executive committee would be there. No big deal though, you were prepared and confident. You were wearing your smartest business attire, hyping yourself up because god knows how else you could get through that morning.
People started coming into the board room one by one. And in he came, as if he were the one commanding the room. The other guys came in their best effort, but he walked in wearing a tailored suit, somehow looking dressed down yet dressed up. And you knew he was in the room before you saw him. He took on a distinct scent, sweet but powerful, spicy and intoxicating. You glared at him and he gave a polite nod of the head in return.
“Good luck,” he said. His smile was full of goodwill, but his eyes were telling another story. His line of sight shifted from you to your laptop and back. An alarm bell rang in your head, but you couldn’t risk being rattled before it even started.
When the executive committee arrived, the president was expectant, looking toward his direction when they asked, “So who will be presenting the final proposal today?”
You projected your voice to take back command. “That would be me,” you said with a winning and confident smile, and you began. You breezed through the presentation with ease until you reached the part discussing the budget.
“Something seems off with the figures.” The chief finance officer narrowed their eyes and reviewed the document in front of them, comparing it to the presentation flashed on the screen.
What the… They were right, there was something off. The numbers were wrong and the numbers didn’t make sense, and the executive committee was here precisely so they could see the bottom line and make sure it was logically sound with the proposal. Shit. Why didn’t I see this before?
“If I may…”
“Ah, Chan.” Your project lead signaled you of the happenings, looking at him with a questioning look. “What is this?”
“Well, I reviewed the deck before this meeting and actually saw this coming.” What? Your smile as you looked at him was tight, civil, and seething. “Sadly, there wasn’t enough time to revise the presentation before this meeting, but I can point out how the numbers are supposed to add up.” He met your gaze at that last line as if mocking your seeming incompetency.
He stood up and started talking, pointing out the flaws in your computations. But he didn’t stop there. He continued to point out other flaws in your presentation and how those contributed to the wrong numbers. He didn’t stop. Almost as if…he planned this from the beginning.
You two were assigned to complete the final proposal and youve both been working on it for weeks. Believe it or not, you actually liked working with him. He was smart and knew what he was doing, and he was naturally good at it—Too good, you think to yourself sometimes.
But when your team lead assigned you to present and finalize the whole thing, he suddenly became competitive, hard to reach, and infinitely harder to collaborate with. His sudden 180-degree change did not make any sense at all to you, until today. Until you saw him presenting in front of the executive committee, engaging everyone in a way that you did not and could not.
I am his number one competition and he thinks he is better than me. He thinks I don’t deserve it. But that’s what he thinks.
Once the presentation meeting was over, you made your way to the employees’ locker area. With everything that happened today, you needed to breathe. You couldn’t stand the congratulations Chan was receiving, the ones that were supposed to be yours.
You found your way in front of your locker and opened the lock with ease. You didn’t know why you did that though, as your locker was empty save for a spare set of heels and a photo of you and your family attached to the back of the locker door.
He was in the room before you saw him, that sweet and spicy scent following him around wherever he went. The only time you acknowledged him was when he was standing to your right, leaning on the lockers and looking at you with an unreadable expression.
“Why are you here?” You greeted him with a side eye.
“I thought you could use some company.”
“What makes you think I’d appreciate your company?”
Chan shrugged. “You always used to like my company.”
“That was before you became an asshole.”
“I’m hurt. How could you call me that when I wanted to give you my congratulations?”
The scoff you let out echoed throughout the room. “Excuse me? You knew what was going on back there. You knew there was something wrong, and I’m willing to bet my ass that you’ve known about it for days—maybe even weeks. And you did not bother to tell me for reasons I cannot fathom aside from you being a selfish son of a bitch.”
“Ooh, the slander.” He breathed in through his mouth audibly with a hiss. “I can raise this up to HR as degradation.”
“Oh, boo hoo. Suck it up the way you do with the big bosses. That’s what you wanted, wasn’t it? You think you’re way too good to be at the same level as I am that you would go as far as almost sabotaging a presentation like that with this unprofessionalism.”
“Unprofessional? Who the fuck do you think saved your sorry ass back there?”
“Saved? You could have saved it by being cooperative in the first place and those damn numbers wouldn’t be a fuck up in the first place!”
You jump when Chan leaves your side and slams your locker door shut. But you are unfazed and laugh. “Wow, that’s so mature Chan.” But when you turn to face him, he remains there, his left arm caging you against the lockers.
“Chan, get the fuck away away from me.” You push against his arm and chest but he resists, instead folding his arm to frame your face with his forearm and pinning you effectively to the lockers with his height. He towers over you and you attempt to look up at his piercing gaze.
“Chan…what the fuck are you doing?” His perfume washes over your senses with his face and neck mere inches away. He arrived at the locker area more dressed down from the meeting, his coat and necktie gone and the sleeves of his white shirt rolled up. His argyle sweater vest hides a glint of silver from around his neck.
It takes all your willpower to meet his eyes in this close proximity. And you were both daring to do so, knowing that this was an area secluded from the rest of the office.
“Do you remember when you first arrived here, all bright eyes and smiles during your first day?” Chan’s eyes softened for a bit and matched the hushed tone of his voice. You could feel his breath on your face, smelling sweet from a breath mint. “One look at you and I knew why you were hired. One look and I knew you were special.” He raised his hand to slowly, painstakingly brush away a stray piece of your hair, before slowly tracing a finger down your cheek. “One look...and I knew you were dangerous."
“What are you doing?” You whisper as his finger continues to follow a line down your neck and to your shoulder.
“You were dangerous. You were a threat. Instantly, I knew that this new hire would rob me of the years of experience I toiled over in this company to reach my position when you just got it in the blink of an eye.” As he was speaking, the line continued like a livewire of sensation down your arm, to the side of your torso, and finally rested on your waist “How dare you?” When he said this, he tugged at your waist and closed the already minimal distance between your lower bodies. You take in a sharp breath.
You dare not move any part of your body, but he continues. He leans in to whisper to your ear, “They say keep your friends close…and your enemies closer. So I did.”
You briefly close your eyes and remember your first days at this company. Chan was one of the first people who made you feel welcome with his warm smile and infectious laugh, accompanied you during lunch breaks, and taught you the ropes. But you could never forget the mornings in the pantry when both of you would wait together for the machine to churn out the freshly brewed coffee. You stood beside each other in silence when no more topics could be shared, and day by day the distance between the two of you grew smaller and smaller—until the backs of your hands could almost touch each other, until your pinky fingers could overlap when you both set your hands on the counter.
Chan’s voice broke your reverie when he said, “But why is it that when I got closer, you seemed less like an enemy…and more of something else?” His other hand moved from against the lockers to delicately cradle your neck while his lips moved from your ear to hover over your lips with the tips of your noses lightly touching.
You couldn’t control yourself anymore. Your hands move on their own accord, one holding onto his hand on your neck and the other fiddling with his collar as you grab on his silver necklace to pull him as close as you can.
Your open lips touch his and remain there, hovering in an unresolved kiss. You share each other’s breaths as they both quicken and you feel him against your thigh. He tightens his grip around your waist and pulls you in until there is no distance between your bodies. Your heartbeat is in your ears, ringing with desire and a rush of blood to your head.
“So who am I, Chan?” You say this against his lips. “Who am I?” You feel his hand on your neck pull you in and you briefly see his eyes flutter and close in anticipation.
In a brief moment of weakness, you consider giving in. But you kept a rational mind, and the bruise to your pride and ego was all it took to hold him tight and force yourself away from his cage. He stumbles and hits the lockers that brace his supposed fall. Chan looks at you with bewilderment and sexual frustration evident on his face.
You look back in confusion and with pain in your eyes, hoping they mirror the pang in your chest containing the pain and hurt that your professional self could never show. Maybe you could have shown it if things went differently, and maybe you could have shown it to him. But the cutthroat nature of your jobs would never allow it—he proved it in front of everyone earlier.
“Because I know who I am. And I am not someone you just play with and screw over.” You fight back the tears in your eyes. You could not show weakness, not now. “Suck it up. And play this game right.”
You fix your disheveled clothes and hair and turn your back to him, walking away from him and wishing you could do the exact opposite. But there was no other choice in this matter.

Mess at Con
Part 2 of my piece for @cloudcountry's Sweet Shroud Summer 2024 event!

You didn’t have many plans for summer, and working whenever you could barely counted as ‘plans’ save for your extremely bare and somewhat depressing calendar that just had your schedule up. But, that had changed when you met your previously strictly online bestie in the flesh, so, hey, maybe the barren dates of your calendar would finally have something written on them besides Work: 9 - 6.
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess How’s that sunburn treating you?
You knew you were being a little shit, but hey, Idia didn’t wear sunscreen on your venture in the swan boat and he was paying the price. Maybe you should get him one of those oversized sun hats?
Gloomurai Are you enjoying yourself with my suffering?
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess Just a little bit >w^
You had been a bit shocked when you saw the infamously introverted Ignihyde housewarden at work only then to find that he was also Gloomurai. But, you were also kind of relieved that he was someone you knew and not some creep.
Gloomurai Despite the peeling skin, I had … fun
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess GASP! Hehehehe my ways are winning you over
Gloomurai Gremlin
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess And proud of it!~
You hovered your fingers over your keyboard, trying to think of something.
Idia had seriously gone out of his comfort zone agreeing to meet you — well, more like having the occasion thrown at him — and you wanted to hang out again. Grim was … okay company, and Ace and Deuce dropped by every so often to give you a migraine. It was nice having a calmer person around (even though ‘calm’ may not be the best descriptor, but compared to the other company you keep, Idia is calmer).
Gloomurai YOU SHOULD TOTALLY TAKE IDIA TO A CON!!! ORTHO- Sorry, ignore that PLEASE
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess Nuh uh
Gloomurai WHAT DO YOU MEAN ‘NUH UH’?!
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess I mean NUH UH NOT IGNORING THAT (say hi to Ortho for me) … when’s the con? [convention right? anime? comics? Both?]
Gloomurai … both You don’t have to though-
You sighed knowing full well that Idia wanted you to go with him.
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess Are you cosplaying anyone?
Gloomurai … I wasn’t planning on it …
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess COWARD! DISHONOURING THE SANCTITY OF THE CON! … I’m joking
You could almost imagine Idia flinching away from the screen from you ‘yelling’ at him, but you couldn’t help but teasingly ruffle his feathers.
Gloomurai I didn’t peg you as the type to be passionate about these things
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess Tsk tsk tsk YOU FOOL! I TAKE THESE MATTERS VERY SERIOUSLY! Plus, who else could stop you from spending Sevens knows how much money in artist alley?
Gloomurai So You actually want to come?
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess Y E S
Gloomurai It’s on Wednesday … where do you want to meet?
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess … I still live at the school, so Ramshackle works for me
Gloomurai F
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess That’s it No Grim privileges for you
Gloomurai NO WAIT GRIMMY-
You closed your laptop, trying to think of a low budget and preferable closet cosplay you could work with. Maybe you could snoop in the film club to see if they have any spare fabric or costumes that you could borrow?
Low on funds and time, but when were you not? You would make this work.
Idia stood outside Ramshackle, yes, he could have waited in the nicely air conditioned car, but he felt weird about it. Fidgeting with his blue robes and wooden staff that was actually just foam, he waited.
He felt kind of bad at first, since making a cosplay last second is a hassle, but also because he felt like the outing was just thrown on you. After seeing how much you were shouting at him in chat though, Idia felt a bit better. He knew you were a nerd, after all, the two of you bonded online over a fairly popular anime adaptation of a manga.
Finally, you stepped out of the formerly dilapidated dorm, and Idia turned his head to look.
… you were both cosplaying characters from the same anime the two of you bonded over, him as the anxious magic user and you as the peppy paladin, complete with armour (thank you Film Club~). You guys didn’t even plan it out, which was weird but not too weird since you both kinda had brain rot about it.
“HA!” You exclaimed, adjusting the foam sword resting on your side, “we match!~”
Idia fixed the pointed ears he was wearing, “... I guess we do.”
Your face went serious for a quick moment. “You still don’t get to see Grim though.” You then flashed him a wink and got into the car — the faster you did that, the more likely that you didn’t waste time trying to find Grim and wasting time.
Idia pouted a bit but also got into the car, leaving a seat between you two. “I get dressed up with a wig, but no Grim,” he grumbled.
You sighed, “Next time.”
“Promise?”
You placed your fist over your heart, “I swear on my life.”
Idia just looked at you, most likely questioning his life decisions. “You’re weird.” Maybe they should be on the same weird list as Trey and Rook?
“Meh,” you shrugged. “That’s a compliment for me, plus,” you smiled at him, “it fits the character I’m cosplaying as!”
The rest of the ride was fairly quiet, but not an awkward quiet, more … content? Yeah, content. Plus, knowing how cons went back at home, this was about to be a very busy day.
Somehow, you had managed to lose Idia. You had stopped several other people who were cosplaying the same character but hadn’t managed to find him yet.
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess Where are you?
You had been in the food court, tempted by the pizza but your soul had nearly left your body seeing the jacked up prices. You had been up and down the different voice actors meet and greets, but still nothing. You had even checked the bathroom lines and sat outside them for a solid ten minutes before calling that venture a quits.
There was no sign of Idia.
Finally, you got a message back.
Gloomurai … artist alley
Friendly Neighbourhood Mess … how much did you spend?
Message seen
“DON’T LEAVE ME ON READ!” You coughed, realizing that you had said that out loud. Taking a breath and ignoring your stomach that was starting to growl, you made your way to artist alley, where many a con goer had gone in saying they would spend nothing, only to leave with many a thing (totally worth it, support artists and small businesses, folks).
Finally, after nearly two hours of being missing in action, you found Idia, who was carrying a copious amount of bags.
“This is where you disappeared off to?” You crossed your arms over your chest and raised a brow in question.
Idia offered you a wobbly smile, offered his hand and then opened it. “I got us matching phone charms…”
In his hand were the characters you were cosplaying. Sighing a bit, you took the charm of his character. “I was just worried about you,” you mumbled, trying to put the cute charm on your ancient phone.
“Sorry-”
“Don’t apologise,” you grabbed some of the bags from him to lessen the load a bit. “But for my own well being, please do not tell me how much you spent today.”
Idia looked at the charm connected to his own phone and then looked back at you. “Deal.”
“However,” you said with a sly grin, “since you put me through so much anguish, you do owe me dinner.”
Idia huffed, but he was starting to get peckish too. “What do you feel like eating, my knight,” he said sarcastically.
You wiggled your brows, “Pizza. Convention pizza.”
“So, regular pizza but just with jacked up prices?”
“Yeah, basically.”
The two of you got your pizza, and proceeded to enjoy the rest of your day. You both managed to see the manga artist of the characters you were cosplaying as — yes, tears were shed — and made some good memories. The two of you were happy, and you were looking forward to filling your calendar with Idia Time, you even knew the perfect blue marker to use.

Summary: Natasha Romanoff is a meddling, pain in the ass Sprite, who you wrongly thought would leave you alone once you introduced her to your best friend, Darcy. News flash, she doesn’t and she won’t. Not when she thinks you’re a perfect match for two of her best friends. Could she be right? Maybe. Just don’t tell her that.
“Never tell Natasha Romanoff she was right” - Clint Barton
Chapter Summary: This Zoom call could have been an email and the reader is starting to teeter.
If this Zoom call went on any longer you were going to take the pen you’d been twiddling in your fingers for the last half hour and gauge it into one of your eyes.
Dramatic but a Zoom call that could have been an email or voice-note was not what you wanted or needed this morning.
You continued to look out of the window again. The drizzle of the rain and wind a reflection of your mood. Probably too windy for dragons too.
Your laptop pinged with a WhatsApp message and you immediately regretted adding it to your desktop. There was a reason your phone was off. Luckily the others had seemed to have taken the hint. Your work acquaintances not so much.
Tyler At least act interested
Did you mute yourself so we couldn’t hear you sighing, because we can still see your eyes rolling you know!!!
Shit she’s asking you a question!!!!
You tried to style out you jumping up in your seat and your eyes going wide as you scrambled to take yourself off mute.
“Sorry you broke up at the start?” you lied.
Amanda huffed, she knew you weren’t paying attention but let it slide. You were one of the best freelance editors she had. Your deadlines were always met, you were meticulous in your work and you could hold your own with the writers, even with some of the more arsehole creatures. The fact you weren’t paying attention was out of character. Glancing at the screen she knew the other two editors were on friendly terms with you and Tyler’s concerned face along with Marshall’s frown pushed her to break her usual ‘no casual chat’ protocol.
“Y/N? Is everything ok?”
You felt a lump form in your throat. Was it that obvious that something was wrong? That someone that barely knew you would ask if you were ok?”
“What do you mean?”
“Are you alright? You don’t seem like your usually bright, sarcastic self.” She said lightly trying to make light of the situation, when in all honesty you looked like shit, and this book was awful. You’d usually have given opening notes on how bad it was but you’d barely said hello.
“I’m fine” you replied too quickly for any of their liking.
“Are you sure kid? You don’t look good.” Marshall replied.
Tyler put his head in his hands. Fuck you were 100% going to lose it now. Marshall might have been 10 years older than you but him calling you kid was something you hated, him pointing out the obvious of you looking like death warmed up was sure to make you snark back.
“I’m fine. What was the question?”
Tyler couldn’t help but let his mouth fall open in shock. Where was the snarky reply?
Amanda repeated the question a frown across her forehead.
“We were going over plot issues?”
“One sec I have a list” you’d replied, reading them out like a shopping list, no usual sarcastic notes to go with them. As you rounded up the end of your notes the funny anecdotes were back but the glint in your eye that usually came with them wasn’t.
“It’s basically like he’s watched a bunch of Walking Dead, 28 Days Later, a couple of low budget movies and pushed them together. How the virus started has changed three times and we’re a third in.”
“Okay, okay. Let’s pause on this, put in your invoices so far and make a start on the next project.”
The next thirty minutes was spending prepping for the next project. This time a military and spy type drama, which was almost entirely human based.
“So it’s a fantasy drama then?” Tyler had quipped.
“Just make a start please.” Amanda replied pleadingly.
“Y/N? You OK to lead this one?” Marshall asked. You were looking out the window again.
“Y/N?” Amanda asked.
“Sorry what?”
“Are you good to lead? And actually what’s so interesting on that side of the room?” Amanda asked.
“The window.” Tyler replied for you.
“What?”
“I’ve been to her apartment, it’s the window.”
“What? I’m not doing anything?!” you interrupted.
“I just asked if you were good to lead?” Marshall asked softly again.
Clearly you weren’t. Leading meant checking everyone’s work, being thorough and you couldn’t even pay attention on a zoom call.
“Actually no.”
There was a flurry of gasps and widening eyes.
“Y/n?”
“I don’t have any military background, and I’m not entirely human am I so, I don’t think I should lead this one. I should be last edit.”
Your laptop pinged again.
Tyler What the fuck is going on?
You never take third!! You’re way too qualified for that.
Y/N what is going on?
You ignored it and looked back at the Zoom call. You were met with concerned faces. Amanda broke first.
“OK, why don’t we sleep on this and regroup tomorrow morning? But put in your invoices for the zombie trash.”
You nodded, trying to hold yourself together and left the call. You pushed down your emotions and pure exhaustion and decided going back to bed with a cup of tea and some chocolate was the answer. Yeah that was it, you were a bit hormonal and that was the problem. It had nothing to do with meeting one of your soulmates, your complete lack of self worth and the fact you were damaged, along with your ears now felt like they were on fire.
Yet none of that had stopped you looking out the window hoping to see Bucky again. It’s too wet and windy for dragons anyway.
As you pulled a mug from the drainer, your favourite mug no less, you caught it on the stack of plates, sending them towards the floor. Trying to catch them you caught the mug on the worktop and broke it in half.
It went downhill from there when you threw what was left of it on to the floor in your temper. This was quickly followed by you swiping all the other dishes off the drainer as a scream of frustration ripped from your throat. You burst into tears and slipped down on the floor and sobbed.
Your laptop pinged repeatedly. Messages and missed calls from your work colleagues.
Then Darcy.
Darcy Boo Can you pick up please? Tyler called. He said you were out of it on the work call. Are you ok?
Please? I’m worried.
Bucky Doll, is everything ok?
Precious, I’m going to need you to answer me.
I’m coming over there if you don’t reply.
Look, I know we aren’t bonded yet but I know something is off.
You have 5 minutes to reply or I’m coming over.
Answer me.
On the other side of the room, sitting on the floor among broken plates and mugs, your sobs slowed as you drifted off to sleep.

Music in the Air
Tumblr media
A/N: Written for Vee's Holly Jolly Challenge (@sstan-hoe). Reader is implied fem, "girls like me". No physical descriptors used.
Prompts: Bucky Barnes - My house, my rules. The Christmas music stays on.
Summary: You and Bucky discuss poinsettias.
Tumblr media
Bucky's arm was having problems. Again. In all the years he had the arm he never really got to understand how it worked. He could figure out how to fix a lot of things, but his arm wasn't one of them. That's why he was glad he had you to turn to. You had quickly become his go-to engineer in the Avengers Tower. You were a rare and delightful combination of "not afraid of him" and "not overly friendly". You would smile, but let him initiate the conversation when he wanted.
At least, normally you were his favorite. Ever since December started you only every played Christmas music in your lab. He was still trying to get used to how much the holiday had changed and the music was, well, a lot. Especially when you were always listening to some kind of heavy metal Christmas music and he had only ever heard Christmas music sung a capella or maybe a church organ.
"Do you really need to listen to that music all the time?"
You smiled while working, "I did the respectful thing and waited until December before I started listening."
"Yeah, but it's just so..." he struggled to find the words.
"Non-traditional?"
"Jarring."
"Well, Sergeant Barnes," you reply, setting your tools down, "My house, my rules. The Christmas music stays on. However, I am willing to switch it for something that's maybe a little more your speed."
You walk over to your laptop and open up your playlist. It takes you a minute, but you finally find the song you're looking for and press the play button. As the speakers sing a lighter, slower tune, you turn back to Bucky, "you should be grateful. I don't turn off Trans Siberian Orchestra for just anyone."
Bucky blushed as he smiled, listening to the song. It was very different from what you had been listening to. For a start, there were lyrics. They told the story of a poinsettia named Percy and how had been overlooked and abandoned but grew and shone when given love. He almost smacked himself for having empathy for an imaginary plant.
To distract himself he said, "I'm surprised you like this song. It's so different from what you were listening to before."
You smile and respond, "it's a childhood favorite. This song just really hit my heart in a way no other Christmas song did. It stuck with me so much that, even in college if I saw my flowers for sale that were wilting or on their last legs, I'd buy them. Just to make sure they had love before they fully wilted."
Bucky looked at you with a softness in his eyes before you shook your head, "I know, it's stupid. I was an adult, I should've known better but some things just stick with you, you know?"
"Yeah," he whispered. "I know. Did you stop buying flowers because you kept getting them from dates or something?"
You chuckle, "I stopped because I had to prioritize my budget. I can't remember the last time I had flowers in my apartment. But thank you for the compliment."
"What do you mean? The guys you date don't give you flowers?"
"Girls like me don't get dates, Sergeant. I'm not whatever enough for guys to ask me out. Whether it's my size, my intelligence, my hobbies, there's just always something that keeps guys from asking me out, let alone bringing me flowers. But, again, thank you for the compliment."
You set down your tools and start putting them away, "your arm is all patched up. Hope this fix lasts you at least through the end of the year. I've got a lot of projects to finish up before the end of the year so I might not have the time to take care of you."
"You're not staying here for Christmas, are you?"
"I am," you nod. "My family celebrates holidays on days that aren't the day of so that we can avoid traffic and last-minute shoppers. So I set up an office lunch for the people who either don't celebrate, have nowhere to go, or whatever other reasons. Mr. Stark has been very generous with the budget for that."
"I'm glad you won't be alone on Christmas," he gives you a gentle smile.
"How about you," you ask. "You're welcome to join us if you'd like."
"Sam is insisting on taking me to Louisiana," he replies.
"Good," you assert. "I'm very glad you also won't be alone on Christmas."
Tumblr media
You really shouldn't have been surprised to see the poinsettia on your desk the next day. There was no note, but you suspected. It wasn't very big and it had started wilting, but you loved it nonetheless. You gently hugged the plant and promised to give it the best of care for as long as it needed. After a week it was like a brand new plant, bright and strong. Doesn't hurt that you asked the biolab techs for help and resources.
It made Bucky's year to see how big your smile was, watching your poinsettia grow and how much you clearly loved it. It took him a while after to gather his courage and ask you on a date but your quick "yes" reassured him. Neither of you would ever be alone on Christmas.
