A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to visit the place where Cheddar cheese was invented, and where it is still made today - the Somerset village of Cheddar. The gorge for which the village is also famous was originally an underground river, which was good for pasturing cattle, making the area an important dairy farming centre in the region. The Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company still makes cheddar cheese according to traditional methods, and has a great visitor center, not only offering a lot of info on the cheese making process, but with views into the cheese making facilities, allowing visitors to actually see the process as it goes on in real time. With prices starting from £5, their cheese isn't exactly as cheap as that which could be found in supermarkets, but for unique cheeses handcrafted according to traditional methods (whereby the cheesemaker has a lot more control over the precise conditions in which the cheese is made), it's certainly worth it for keeping those incredible skills alive. 3D textile landscape across four shelves which tell the story of the different types of landscape found in Northumberland: farmland, hay meadow, woodland and upland moorland. I will upload more detailed images soon. The top three shelves are all made with hand embriodery and crochet for details like the stone walls, hedges and the river. The bottom shelf is designed for visitors to sit on, so the hand embriodered details are kept towards the back of the piece and more machine embriodery to the front. This has been a lovely project to work on for The Sill in Northumberland.
