Sleeping Over at Ramshackle w/Idia
Never leaves his room? You take that as a challenge, and you know just the answer to Night Raven Collegeâs biggest riddle.
IdiaâŚI wanna play a fighting game. You down?
Which one? I can connect you.
How about the one you left at Ramshackle with me?
I can literally mod that.
But you canât eat my freshly baked cookies from your dorm.
(I want it emoji) Fine, you win.
Idia can never resist your baked goods, no matter how hard he tries. He needs them to function on that console of yours.
When he comes over, you donât expect him to have a bag of spare clothes with him, but you remember that when it comes to gaming, itâs going to be a long night. India immediately goes for your choco cookies.
âPower up!â he cheers after eating two of them.
Then, you two are duking it out for the virtual champion title.
The both of you spend three long hours blistering your thumbs on your controllers. The health bars on the corners of the TV screen are at the chokehold. You and Idia donât notice how a storm has brewers outside. Itâs storming so much that it brings on the thunder. One large crack is all it takes for the power in Ramshackle to drop from fifty percent to zero. India and you take a few seconds to adjust to reality, but you also realize how dark the dorm is without any source of light.
âGood Seven, this would never happen in Ignihyde,â mutters Idia.
You, on the other hand, donât comment. You point out how late it is instead. You offer to make up Idiaâs room as he takes a shower. He might as well. Youâve never had to do this in the dark though. Not that itâs impossible, but your limbs are quaking as you hold your phone as a flashlight under your chin and tighten the sheets onto the spare bed.
You are in the middle of fluffing the pillows when Idia exits the washroom. He peers into the room, watching you shaking like a leaf. Heâs all too familiar with the sensation. He clears his throat, alerting you of his presence. You canât be happier to see Idia in his unexpectedly athletic looking pajamas. The contradiction makes you snicker.
âWhat? If you were going to catch me in anime tees, thatâs never going to happen,â he says.
âWhy not? You rarely leave your room anyway. Not like anyone would care.â
âIncorrect. I learned my lesson during my first year. Iâve been wearing my STYX night gear ever since.â
You frown at this. âSorry.â
Idia suggests that you get a candle or two to light up the place. It would help you sleep better than having your flashlight from your phone beaming in both of your faces. You explain that you tried looking for candles the other day, but Ramshackle doesnât have any, and Sam doesnât provide candles unless itâs for the main school buildingâs events. Idia remarks that he shouldâve expected that.
âWhat? Youâre not gonna say anything?â you ask, notioning that Idia knows about your fear of the dark.
Of course, he does, butâŚâNot really. A NEET like me calling someone like you a baby for a fear of darkness is the most âpot calling the kettle blackâ scenario some airhead with no creative RPG ideas could ever come up with.â
Thereâs no argument that you can come up with to combat that.
âAs much as I wish I could fix this problem, there is no one-hit solution for that.â
âGee, thanks.â
âBut uhâŚâ
You elevate an eyebrow.
Idia unzips the jacket to reveal a gray, Premo shirt underneath, revealing how Idia still has his interests, but he has told the truth about no anime related clothing. His face begins to pinken, and the tips of his long blue hair fade into blush as well. âIâve seen this corny thing a ton of times, but I heard it works. If you wannaâŚthenâŚI guessâŚâ
You carefully step around your bed to prevent yourself from stubbing your toe, and when you are in the clear, you take Idiaâs offer to hug into his night jacket. Having you touch him is already nerve-wracking for the introverted Housewarden, but then, to have him wrap you in the jacket folds turns the pale third-year into an overheating furnace. He suggests that you guys hide under the covers before heâd faint onto the floor.
Youâre not too pleased with having to turn the flashlight of your phone off, but as you are not alone this evening, both you and Idia suppose that safety is in both of your corners tonight.Â

March 18 (UPI) -- Poland and three Baltic states Tuesday announced their intention to withdraw from the 1997 Ottawa Treaty banning the use of anti-personnel mines to give their forces a critical defensive edge amid a "fundamental" deterioration of the security of NATO member states bordering Russia and Belarus.
In a joint statement, the defense ministers of Poland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania said that with a significant increase in military threats and the unstable security situation marked by Russia's aggression and the ongoing threat it posed to the Euro-Atlantic community, the decision was aimed at sending an unequivocal message they were ready and able to take "every necessary measure to defend our territory and freedom."
"We believe that in the current security environment, it is paramount to provide our defense forces flexibility and freedom of choice to potentially use new weapons systems and solutions to bolster the defense of the Alliance's vulnerable Eastern Flank," they said. "In light of these considerations, we unanimously recommend withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention."
The ministers vowed the move would not weaken their respective countries' commitment to international humanitarian law, including the protection of civilians during armed conflict, saying they would continue to uphold IHL principles "while addressing our security needs."
They insisted the move was warranted by the "dire security challenges" confronting them, asking Allies and partners who recognized that reality to "respect our decision in this matter."
The announcement came two weeks after Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said his country, which saw parts of its territory annexed by Russia after World War II and the rest of the country forcibly subsumed into the Soviet-controlled communist-Eastern Bloc, would begin the process of quitting the landmines convention.
The war in Ukraine has seen Russia turn its neighbor into virtually the most mined country on Earth, according to the United Nations.
Ukraine, a signatory to the convention that has been provided with anti-personnel mines by the United States, has previously warned it cannot guarantee full compliance amid a battle for its very survival.
However, with no pressing military imperative to bring the banned mini-weapons, which are specifically designed to maim and kill troops as opposed to mines targeting tanks or ships, the ministers of the four countries said they would consult with allies and neighbors.
"Decisions regarding the Ottawa Convention should be made in solidarity and coordination within the region. At the same time, we currently have no plans to develop, stockpile, or use previously banned anti-personnel landmines," said Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur.
Latvian defense staff chief Major General Kaspars Pudans told Politico recently that currently anti-tank mines and artillery were a higher priority for Latvia's defense.
Notably, Finland, which has a remote 830-mile-long eastern border with Russia, did not sign onto Tuesday's declaration but Defense Minister Antii Hakkanen said it was also thinking about quitting.
The United States, Russia, China, India, Pakistan and South Korea are among more than 30 countries that have never signed the treaty.

At Vauxhall Gardens, [...] giant paintings were erected in the âPillared Saloonâ of seemingly geographically opposed colonial wars: one painting of The Battle of Plassey (1757), which secured Bengal for the British East India Company, hung next to another symmetrical work that portrayed the British capture of Montreal and, later, Canada itself. That these and other sizable aesthetic works were âdesigned to be an immersive virtual-reality experienceâ testifies to Cohenâs larger claim in The Global Indies that 18th-century fashion, rank, sociability, and class were intimately bound up with race and colonialism, particularly through the periodâs joint imaginary of the  âIndies.â
The Indies describes a shared fantasy - and unquestionable material reality - of wealth accumulation that yoked together the âWestâ (the Caribbean and North America) and âEastâ (the Indian subcontinent) Indies in late 18th-century British culture, a conceptual proximity so thorough and unrelenting that its effects reverberate [today] throughout the contemporary [...].
---
The prelude to Ashley L. Cohenâs The Global Indies opens in a pleasure garden - not just any such garden, but the largest and most spectacular of these 18th-century sites of fashionable culture [...]: Londonâs Vauxhall Garden. At Vauxhall, Londoners who could afford the entrance fee were treated to an array of wonders and excesses. A well-known chapter entitled âVauxhallâ in William Makepeace Thackerayâs Vanity Fair (1847ââ48), for example, finds Jos Sedley, an âindolentâ officer of the East India Company recently returned to London, drunk off the gardenâs signature "rack punch.â Â âEverybody had rack punch at Vauxhall,â [...]. Lest a reader mistake punch for a mere artifact of the pleasure garden or a one-off comedic incident, âthat bowl of rack punch was the cause of all this history,â the narrator stresses about his unfolding novel. [...] Punch, an alcoholic drink popular with colonial officers of the East India Company, was usually made with a combination of five ingredients including sugar cane and spices, and probably derives from the Sanskrit word âpancha,â meaning five (and invites an etymological link with the Persian panj and with Bengali five-spice mix, panch phoreen). Rack punchâs association with Vauxhall, with India, and with Vanity Fairâs narrative construction was hardly a stretch for Thackerayâs Victorian readers, and probably registered as quite natural, though it carried more than a whiff of the unseemly. But then again, to 18th-century Britons, ânatural and a little unseemlyâ could easily describe the âworldwide empire that stretched from the East to the West Indiesâ [...].
---
Itâs tricky business to think seriously inside of the 18th-centuryâs analytic tools, but The Global Indies pulls it off, not least because Cohen is appropriately blunt [...], reminding readers of the everyday racism of the Georgians and their fashionable sociability. The book benefits, too, from a rich body of existing work [...] [by] scholars like Edward Said and Srinivaas Aravamudan. [...] [T]he âIndies mentalityâ enters a critical landscape that has lately taken up the connections between geographically far-flung events in modernity: North American settler colonialism, Atlantic slavery, colonialism in India, and the migration of Chinese and South Asian indentured labor.
Lest these all seem like separate histories that have produced separate discursive notions of race, critics like Lisa Lowe, Jodi Byrd, Tao Leigh Goffe, and now Cohen assure us that they are not, and that our modern ideas about race are intimately shaped by the interconnected and forced movements of Black and brown people across the world. [...]
Cohen spells out how British liberal reformers and abolitionists found a solution to ending West Indian slavery in the continuation of so-called âfreeâ wage labor in Bengal. Sugar produced by Bengali peasants laboring under the threat of starvation came to replace sugar produced on West Indian plantations well into the 19th and 20th centuries. One only has to look up the multiple Bengal famines (1769â1770, and 1943) to calculate its effects. [...]Â
[T]he architects of the [American transcontinental] railroad âimagined a new era of US hegemony in a mold cast by the imaginative geographies of British imperialism.â

In the early weeks of 2023, as worry about ChatGPT and other artificial intelligence tools was ratcheting up dramatically in the public conversation, a tweet passed through the many interlocking corners of Book Twitter. âImagine if every Book is converted into an Animated Book and made 10x more engaging,â it read. âAI will do this. Huge opportunity here to disrupt Kindle and Audible.â
The tweetâs author, Gaurav Munjal, cofounded Unacademy, which bills itself as âIndiaâs largest learning platformââand within the edtech context, where digitally animated books can be effective teaching tools, his suggestion might read a certain way. But to a broader audience, the sweeping proclamation that AI will make âeveryâ book â10x more engagingâ seemed absurd, a solution in search of a problem, and one predicated on the idea that people who choose to read narrative prose (instead of, say, watching a film or playing a game) were somehow bored or not engaged with their unanimated tomes. As those who shared the tweet observed, it seems like a lot of book industry âdisruptorsâ just donât like reading.
Munjal is one of many tech entrepreneurs to ping the book worldâs radarâand raise its collective hacklesâin recent months. Many were hawking AI âsolutionsâ they promised would transform the act of writing, the most derided among them Sudowriteâs Story Engine (dubbed in a relatively ambivalent review by The Vergeâs Adi Robertson as âthe AI novel-writing tool everyone hatesâ). Story Engine raised frustrations by treating writers as an afterthought and, by its very existence, suggesting that the problems it was trying to bypass werenât integral to the act of writing itself.
Last month, Justine Moore, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, provided a sort of bookend to Munjalâs âAI-animated booksâ proposal. âThe three largest fanfic sitesâ[Archive of Our Own], Fanfiction.net, and Wattpadâget 3 billion-plus annual visits in the US alone,â she wrote. âImagine how much bigger this market could be if you could chat with characters vs. reading static stories?â The thread was likely a reference to Character.ai, a startup that lets users chat with fictional heroes and villains; Andreessen Horowitz led a $150 million funding round for the company in March. The comment also came after the revelation that large language models (LLMs) may have scraped fanfiction writersâ workâwhich is largely written and shared for freeâcausing an (understandable) uproar in many fan communities.
Setting aside the fact that fandom role-playing has been a popular practice for decades, Mooreâs statements felt like a distillation of techâs tortured relationship with narrative prose. There are many kinds of fanfictionâincluding an entire subgenre in which âyouâ are a character in the story. But those are still stories, sentences deliberately written and arranged in a way that lets you lose yourself in an authored narrative. âImagine having such a fundamental misunderstanding of the appeal of reading fanfictionâlet alone reading fiction more broadly,â I wrote in response to her thread. Whatâs so wrong with people enjoying reading plain old words on a page?
The tech world has long been convinced that it understands the desires of readers better than they do themselves. For years, VCs have promised to upend books and the structures around their creation and consumption. Some came from within the publishing industry, but like their counterparts âdisruptingâ other sectors, including film and TV, many more did not. And for the most part, despite techâs sometimes drastic (and often negative) effects on other industries, book- and reading-related startups failed to alter much at all. People are still buying booksâin fact, theyâre buying more than ever. Pandemic lockdowns brought a perhaps unsurprising boom in sales, and even though numbers slipped as restrictions lifted, print sales were still nearly 12 percent higher in 2022 than they were in 2019, and sales of audio books continue to increase dramatically year over year.
One reason books havenât been particularly disruptable might be that many of the people looking to âfixâ things couldnât actually articulate what was brokenâwhether through their failure to see the real problems facing the industry (namely, Amazonâs stranglehold), or their insistence that books are not particularly enjoyable as a medium. âItâs that arrogance, to come into a community you know nothing about, that you might have studied as you study for an MBA, and think that you can revolutionize anything,â says writer and longtime book-industry observer Maris Kreizman. âThere were so many false problems that tech guys created that we didnât actually have.â
Take, for example, the long string of pitches for a âNetflix for booksââideas that retrofitted Netflixâs original DVDs-by-mail model for a different medium under the presumption that readers would pay to borrow books when the public library was right there. Publisherâs Weekly keeps a database of book startups that now numbers more than 1,300; many of them are marked âClosed,â alongside a graveyard of broken URLs. There were plenty of practical ideasâtargeting specific demographics or genres or pegged to more technical aspects, like metadata or production workflows. But many more proposed ways to alter books themselvesâmost of which made zero sense to people who actually enjoy reading.
âI donât think theyâre coming to that with a love of fiction or an understanding of why people read fiction,â Kreizman says. âIf they were, they wouldnât make these suggestions that nobody wants.â
The â10x more engagingâ crowd has come in waves over the past two decades, washed ashore via broader tech trends, like social media, tablets, virtual reality, NFTs, and AI. These tech enthusiasts promised a vast, untapped market full of people just waiting for technology to make books more âfunâ and delivered pronouncements with a grifting sort of energy that urged you to seize on the newest trend while it was hotâeven as everyone could see that previous hyped ventures had not, in fact, utterly transformed the way people read. Interactive books could have sound effects or music that hits at certain story beats. NFTs could let readers âownâ a character. AI could allow readers to endlessly generate their own books, or to eschewâto borrow one particular framingââstatic storiesâ entirely and put themselves directly into a fictional world.
AI isnât remotely a new player in the book world. Electronic literature artists and scholars have worked with various forms of virtual and artificial intelligence for decades, and National Novel Generation Month, a collaborative challenge modeled after NaNoWriMo, has been around since 2013. Even now, as much of the book world loudly rejects AI-powered writing tools, some authors are still experimenting, with a wide range of results. But these bespoke, usually one-off projects are a far cry from the tech industryâs proposals to revolutionize reading at scaleânot least because the projects were never intended to replace traditional books.
âA lot of interactive storytelling has gone on for a very long time,â says Jeremy Douglass, an assistant professor of English at the University of California, Santa Barbara, citing everything from his early career work on hypertext fiction to the class heâll teach next year on the long history of the pop-up book to centuries-old marginalia like the footnote and the concordance. âThese fields are almost always very old, theyâre almost always talked about as if theyâre brand-new, and there havenât really been a lot of moments of inventing a new modality.â
To VC claims that AI will totally alter books, Douglass takes what he calls a âyes, andâ stance. âWhat people are actually doing is creating a new medium. Theyâre not actually replacing the novel; they created a new thing that was like the novel but different, and the old forms carried on. Iâm still listening to the radio, despite the film and game industriesâ efforts.â
Tech entrepreneurs rarely pitch âyes, andâ ideas. In their view, new technologies will improve onâand eventually supplantâwhat exists now. For all of his interest in the many forms of interactive fiction, Douglass doubts that most books would benefit from an AI treatment.
âThere are extremely pleasurable aesthetic systems that arenât intentional,â he says. âBut how often when Iâm reading The Autobiography of Malcolm X or The Joy of Cooking do I think, âIf only a chatbot could augment this on the flyâ? And itâs partly the fact that some communication is deeply intentional, and thatâs part of the pleasure. Itâs handcrafted, itâs specific, thereâs a vision.â
That isnât to say that Douglass thinks thereâs zero appetite for AI in literatureâbut itâs âprobably a very small slice of the pie. So when you say âall booksâ? Almost certainly not. For the same reason that weâre not reading 100 percent pop-up books, or watching all of our books on YouTube, or anything else you can imagine. People are doing that too, but itâs extra.â
The exact size of that small pie slice remains to be seen, as does the general publicâs appetite for instant novels, or chatting with characters, or hitting a button that will animate any book in your digital library. But those desires will likely need to come from readers themselvesânot from the top down. âIf you just give the tools to everybody, which is happening in spite of venture capital, as well as because of it, people will figure out what they want it forâand itâs usually not what the inventors and the investors think,â Douglass says. âItâs not even in their top-10 list of guesses, most of the time. Itâs incredibly specific to the person and genre.â
The recent history of publishing has plenty of examples in which digital tools let people create things we couldnât have predicted in the analog days: the massive range of extremely niche self-published romance, for example, or the structural variation and formal innovation within the almost entirely online world of fanfiction.
But when the tech industry approaches readers with ways to âfixâ what isnât broken, their proposals will always ring hollowâand right now, plain old reading still works for huge numbers of people, many of whom pick up books because they want to escape and not be the main character for a while. âThatâs a good thing,â Kreizman says. And as AI true believers sweep through with promises that this technology will change everything, it helps to remember just how many disruptors have come and gone. âIn the meantime, tech bros will still find VCs to wine and dine and spend more money on bullshit,â Kreizman predicts. But for the rest of us? Weâll just keep on reading.

The Impact of 5G on Android App Development: Opportunities and Challenges
With the advent of 5G technology, the world is witnessing a significant transformation in various industries. Â One such area that is experiencing a profound impact is Android app development. Â As the demand for faster and more reliable connectivity grows, Android app developers and companies are presented with new opportunities and challenges. Â This article by Nivida Web Solutions explores the impact of 5G on Android app development, specifically focusing on the opportunities it brings and the challenges it poses for Android App Development Company in Vadodara, Gujarat, India.

Opportunities for Android App Development Companies:Â
Enhanced Speed and Performance:
The most notable advantage of 5G technology is its exceptional speed and reduced latency. Â With faster download and upload speeds, Android app developers can create apps that deliver high-quality content and provide seamless user experiences. Â This opens up possibilities for resource-intensive applications such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and video streaming apps, which can take full advantage of 5G speeds to provide immersive experiences.Â
Improved User Engagement:
The low latency of 5G enables real-time interactions between users and applications. Â An excellent Android App development company in India like Nivida Web Solutions Pvt. Ltd. can leverage this capability to create highly responsive apps that react instantaneously to user actions. Â This can significantly enhance user engagement and satisfaction, leading to increased user retention and app popularity.Â
IoT Integration:
5G technology offers robust support for the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem. Â Android app developers can leverage the high bandwidth and low latency of 5G to seamlessly integrate IoT devices with mobile applications. Â This integration opens up avenues for developing innovative applications in areas such as smart homes, connected cars, and healthcare, where real-time data exchange between devices is crucial.Â
Edge Computing:
5G enables edge computing, which allows data processing and storage to occur closer to the end user, reducing latency and improving response times. Â Android app development companies like Nivida Web Solutions can leverage edge computing to offload computational tasks from mobile devices to edge servers. Â These results in faster app performance, reduced battery consumption, and improved security, ultimately enhancing the user experience.

Challenges for Android App Development Companies:Â
Network Fragmentation:
While 5G promises high-speed connectivity, it also introduces network fragmentation challenges. Â Different regions and carriers may adopt different 5G frequencies and standards, resulting in fragmentation in terms of coverage and compatibility. Â Android app developers need to account for these variations and ensure their apps are compatible with different 5G networks to reach a broader user base.Â
Increased Data Consumption:
With faster download and upload speeds, users are likely to consume more data when using 5G networks. Â This poses a challenge for Android app development companies as they need to optimize their apps to minimize data usage. Â Efficient data handlings techniques such as data compression, intelligent caching, and content delivery network integration become crucial to provide a cost-effective and data-friendly experience to users.Â
Device Compatibility:
While 5G technology is rapidly expanding, not all Android devices support it. This presents a challenge for Android app developers as they need to ensure their apps are compatible with both 5G-enabled devices and devices operating on older networks. Â Creating apps that can seamlessly transition between different network technologies without sacrificing functionality or performance becomes essential.Â
Increased Complexity:
The introduction of 5G brings new complexities to Android app development. Developers need to understand the technical intricacies of 5G networks and integrate the necessary protocols and APIs into their apps. Â This requires specialized knowledge and expertise in 5G technologies, which may require additional training and resources for Android app development companies.Â
Conclusion:Â
5G technology is revolutionizing the Android app development landscape, offering numerous opportunities for innovation and growth. Â The enhanced speed, improved user engagement, IoT integration, and edge computing capabilities of 5G present exciting possibilities for Android app developers. Â However, the challenges of network fragmentation, increased data consumption, device compatibility, and increased complexity cannot be overlooked. Â Android app Development Company like Nivida Web Solutions located in Vadodara, Gujarat, India delivers exceptional app experiences to users in the 5G era.

By Elizabeth Minkel
