I love action packed shows. I love it when it moves fast and has crazy perspective and the frames are off the charts. And the storyboards are probably insane

But

I also love the slower films. The old b/w movies where the shot lingers for half a minute as people slowly walk on and the shadows get bigger and the camera is unsteady. And they make you wait for the drama and it's wonderful

(this is gonna be less tutorial and more Quick Tips)

Okay I was partially joking with the Peter Lorre thing. But actually the reason I did those studies was because I am in awe of his micro-expressions and was trying to learn how to convey that in art.

It's all about the eyes/eyebrows!

First of all, you should absolutely find an actor who in good at expression and do studies on them. Pick one scene where their face shifts around a lot, and figure out how and why they're doing what they're doing. They are intentionally trying to express information to the audience. How, and why?

Also! I did this with my boy Quasimodo

He's got that added bonus of only having one good eye, (I have a character with one eye, and wanted the expression practice)

And if you're struggling with the expression just not hitting correctly, this is some of the best advice I've seen

Is it a Mouth Expression? Or an Eye Expression?

Yes, it can be both sometimes, but that's for more subtle expressions. When you start to push it, focus on one of the two.

And then I REALLY wanted to push myself. So lets get rid of the mouth entirely. Expression with only eyes

this is the only animation I've done with him so far, but I'm very excited to explore this challenge.

and uh, in terms of facial structures? Look at realistic faces. Draw them. Now, make them a cartoon. How can you draw a stylized version of that while still showing it's the same person?

I don't have good tips for this. It just comes to you the more you do it.
