It’s not often that we get to play with post-black metal bands but Hell is Other People certainly set the bar high. From delicate atmospheric guitars to precise, intentional drums, to wailing, pained vocals, these guys ruled.

8. such a lovely place; such a lovely face—snippet of my Mary May/Michael oneshot for the smut prompts because I just have to set a mood. Also, sorry for the lack of line break; I'm on my phone at work so can't add a line break properly. :"")
Tumblr media
"Thought the cleaners were supposed to do that for ya."
His voice tore through the empty bar like a grazing bullet, yet Mary May refuses to succumb to the sudden ring of it. The only indication of her perplexion resides in the thinning of her lips, the tightness of her hold on the worn-out mop; her knuckles white, teeth scrapping, tugging—Mary May attempts to catch her bearings.
"Yeah—well," she clears her throat, dragging at the bucket laying by her feet. "The last time I saw Frank, he was sittin' in a tinted reaping truck heading up to the Mountains, so—"
Mary May gives a final swipe across the beer-soaked wood before giving up and discarding her cleaning products altogether by the running jukebox.
She turns to him, then; drinks in the sight of the shearling jacket draped over an upturned barstool, the trail of mud flaking from his heavy boots and onto her ( just cleaned, fuck— ) floor. Mary May heaves a heavy sigh as her viridian gaze lands on the wide, sharp grin belonging to one Michael Scott Hughes.
"Just why are you her—what happened?" The sight of the darkened bruise upon his cheekbone is enough to cut her words off, to kick her brain into overdrive as she traverses the space between them in eight quick strides, gripping his chin to angle his jaw to face her better. Michael observes her beneath soot-colored lashes, mirth nearly spilling from his curled mouth at the lines of concern distorting Mary May's features. Her finger pad idly brushes across the discoloration of his skin, and Michael seldom flinches at the throbbing pain.
"Nothin' major, dollface," he positively purrs as he leans his bruised face into the warmth of her palm, pressing his cheek fully against her soft skin. As if seared by fire, Mary May retracts her touch, brows coming together in scowling warning.
He's currently walking on eggshells, he knows, but when hasn't he when it concerned his childhood sweetheart? A year ago? Ten? He can't even recall a time she hasn't flinched from his playful touch or his comforting hand, no matter how light or welcomed, and that admission sets a bitter taste in his mouth he's grown uncomfortablely used to.
Still, Michael cracks her a slight smirk, seemingly amused by her apprehension as he comes behind the bar—much to Mary May's dismay.
"Was just setting an example for dear ol' John boy on how to be a good Samaritan for once. Not my fault he can't take a fuckin' joke." Mike's muffled voice rings out softly, words climbing over the soft lilt of Hotel California playing on the beat-down jukebox as he crouches down.
"Uh huh," Mary May watches him sharply as he rummages through the crate of pre-made molotovs stashed underneath her sink, wondering what the hell he is up to this time.
God, she just wants to sleep away the ever-present exhaustion that strung her back and invaded her mind with each radio taunt and threat and gunshot resounding in the distance. And Michael is, truly, the last thing she needs right now; he makes her tense for different reasons than the cult or John Seed do, begrudgingly enough.
"And I suppose you comin' in here uninvited and going through my things is you being a 'good Samaritan'?" Her fingers curl into sarcastic quotation marks as Michael goes to hook his foot through the handle of the heavy-looking bag he has brought to drag it closer inside the bar with him.
"It's a bar, Mary dearest; I'm always invited."
"It's past midnight, Mickey."
Mary May can just make out the amused glint in his green eyes underneath the dim lights of the Spread Eagle as he stands back up to his full height, and the intensity of his sobering face makes her want to wrap her arms around herself for one reason or another.
"Precisely why I'm here," Michael mumbles as he slams the large bag on top of the wood before him. She looks on wordlessly as he unzips it, trying her best to appear disinterested at what Michael has cooked up for her today.
"Annie and I," there's a slight pause at that, lasting only a hair's breath as the Deputy's endearing nickname tumbles from his mouth, and Mary May feels her forearms break into goosebumps; cold and tingly.
(  Must be the AC, she thinks begrudgingly, noting to check in on it in the morning. )
"—caught whiff of Johnny's plans for Fall's End in the upcoming weeks as a last measure, and it ain't no jokin' matter anymore, Mary."
Mary May opens her mouth to question him, to debunk  and rationalise with him—nothing John Seed throws at them can scare her at this point; not after the machine guns and planes and flamethrowers—but at the sight of the contents Michael produces from within his bag, her words die in her throat, unsaid and hollowed.
"Is that—"
"—yep," Michael tosses a gas mask at her, and Mary May can barely catch it in time, dazed as she is. "I'm not gonna lie; it's gonna be a real bitch gettin' rid of the smell afterwards, doll."
Mary May traces the edges of it in silent thought, grip tight, fingers pressing until they turn white from beneath her nails. Dread seeps into her pores and into her ringing ears, and the only thing that snaps her out of her anxious daze is the sound of a bottle being opened.
"Hey, put that back!" She barks unsteadily, seeing Michael bring out two tumblers from beneath the wooden bar, looking more at home than she would care to admit. There's long strands brushing across his cheeks, but Mary can still make out the tightness in his jaw, the too sharp too sudden spill of the malt Whiskey she had reserved only for him, for when he stumbles in, bruised and in need of nursing.
Just like now, apparently.
"Sit down." He points at the barstool brushing against her jeans, and Mary May realizes that he had placed it for her and not himself to recline upon. She chews on her bottom lip, teeth scraping at the flesh there, and Michael tuts at her. "I don't want no excuses from ya', sweetheart; lemme do this for you—it's the least I can do."
There's something in the way he says it, serious and unyielding, leaving no room for arguing that has her complacent.
Mary May sits on the squeaking chair only with two complaints on her tongue, letting her shoulders drop as she leans her forearms on the bar. There's a hand at the base of her neck, then, and the only thing she can do is blink up at him as Michael releases her blonde locks from the bun she wears, his palm ruffling her crown, fingers sliding over to bop at her curved nose.
Michael counters her puffy cheeks with a tumbler full of whiskey, presenting the glass with more antics than necessary as Mary May sighs at his pompous gestures. Even when serious, Michael just has to display his grandiose signs of false chivalry and affection.
In spite of it, she is unable to deny the flutter in her stomach his handling of her this way causes, nor the heat burning beneath her cheeks in the dim, dim light.

Territory of the Esoteric
Territory of the Esoteric -- Pathfinder Urban Fantasy Feat
You are a part of that Secret World, a monster dwelling right around the corner & just behind the shadowy curtain: far enough from the dim eyes of the mundane to remain utterly hidden ... yet forever close enough to feed.
Brought to you absolutely free to enjoy, to test & to share – as always – by the fine folks of my Patreon.
Tumblr media
image from here
Prerequisite: Ability to use spells, spell-like abilities or a supernatural ability of any kind; see Special, below
Benefit: Whenever you are using a spell, a spell-like ability, a supernatural ability or are under the effects of magic of any kind, you gain all the benefits of the invisibility spell; this special invisibility only affects creatures who are at least 30 ft. from you or a total number of feet equal to 10 ft. per Hit Die you possess, whichever is greater.
For example: John the Kuthite is an advanced animate dream with the Apostle Kyton Template in service to the Cult of the Midnight Lord; under most circumstances, he may only be seen by creatures who are within 120 feet of him. As such, so long as he flies at least 120 feet above the ground, John cannot be observed nor detected by mundane humans.
This special invisibility may be broken -- and the effect ended -- in any of the normal ways that the invisibility spell can be broken; however, the illusion effect automatically resumes at the beginning of your next round.
Any creature actively using detect magic or Pierce the Veil (see Bloodlines & Black Magic, page 10-11 & pg. 67) automatically overcomes your illusion, even if you are outside the normal range of such a divination.
Any creature with the Keen Eye for the Unknowable Trait automatically sees through this illusion, as if you did not possess invisibility of any kind, with no action or roll required.
You may freely choose not to activate this feat, if you so desire, while under the effects of a spell, a spell-like ability, a supernatural ability or magic of any kind; for example, Marduk the Viridian might choose not to activate this feat while employing the alter self spell to pas as a human businessman. Otherwise, the activation of this feat is reflexive and does not require an action nor any type of special concentration on your part.
Special: This feat is intended for use only within a campaign using the Fear of Magic rule. With such as a campaign, it is appropriate that this feat may be taken as a wizard’s bonus feat, as a rogue talent, as a ninja trick, as a witch’s hex, as an arcanist exploit, or as a Combat Feat for purposes of the Martial Flexibility class feature (amongst other options).
Campaign Note: Within the Eve of Dreams & the AWAKE setting, use of this ability still violates both the letter and the spirit of the iron-clad Law of the Arcanotheign ... although those who use this ability tend not to get caught committing their misdeeds particularly often, which makes it pretty darn popular with certain crowds.

My Favorite Albums of 2020
It’s that time of year again! I’m a bit late on this since it took me a bit to finish off my list of new releases, but it’s time now! Here we will be looking at my top 10 favorite albums of 2020. I also did a post on my top 5 favorite EP’s and you check that out here!
Before we get into this, let me explain my system. I compile a list of majority of the releases I checked out over the year and have them separated into three categories: the good, the ones that have potential to be favorites, and the favorites. The good will have ** marked next to them and the potential favorites will have *** next to them. I didn’t have many releases this year that didn’t make it onto my list, which is great to hear.
As always, let me give some disclaimers. First and foremost: these are my personal thoughts and opinions on these releases. If you think a release should be higher, lower, or not even on my list, that is on you. Second: I am a metalhead, so most of the releases you will see on here are metal releases.
Now let’s first see the honorable mentions!
Semblant - Obscura** Amberian Dawn - Looking for You** Temperance - Viridian** Catalepsia - Inheritance** Kesha - High Rode** Thy Catafalque - Naiv** Deathwhite - Grave Image** Fluisteraars - Bloem** Clouds - Durere** Burning Witches - Dance with the Devil** My Dying Bride - The Ghost of Orion** Fallcie - Bad Blood** The Order of Chaos - Maniacal** Ad Infinitum - Chapter I: Monarchy** Miracle Flair - Synchronism** Caligula's Horse - Rise Radiant** Her Chariot Await - Her Chariot Await** Carach Angren - Franckensteina Strataemontanus** Haken - Virus** The Wise Man's Fear - Valley of Kings** Volturian - Crimson** Thy Despair - The Song of Desolation** Reasons Behind - Project M.I.S.T.** Psychotic Waltz - The God-Shaped Void** The Naked and Famous - Recover** Ravenscry - 100** Cult of Lilith - Mara** Smackbound - 20/20** The Anix - Graphite** Silentium - Motiva** Darzamat - A Philospher at the End of the Universe** Davina Michelle - My Own World** Walk in Darkness - On the Road to Babylon** DGM - Tragic Separation** Ulver - Flowers of Evil** Strvngers - Zayka** Goldenhall - Collide** Memoira - Carnival of Creation**
AfterTime - The Farthest Shore*** Rina Sawayama - Sawayama*** Diabulus in Musica - Euphonic Entropy*** Myrkur - Folkesange*** Ignea - The Realms of Fire and Death*** Vile Creature - Glory, Glory! Apathy Took Helm!*** Dark Sarah - Grim*** Lady Gaga - Chromatica*** Angel - A Woman's Diary: Chapter 2*** Aleah - Aleah*** I Miss My Death - MYSTO*** MoonSun - Escapalace*** Ayreon - Transitus*** Mikaela - Nocturne in Red*** Eleine - Dancing in Hell*** Light Field Reverie - Another World*** Veil of Secrets - Dead Poetry*** Invocation Array - Arctiinae*** Lindsay Schoolcraft - Worlds Away*** Black Crown Initiate - Violent Portraits of Doomed Escape*** Draconian - Under a Godless Veil*** Seven - Interdimensional Acts I and II***
Now let the fun begin with the top 10!
10. Nightwish - Human. :||: Nature.
Tumblr media
Ok, hear me out Nightwish stans. This album wonderful, but given that I don't listen to disc two and that there's a song on here that I don't like has it this low. Just be glad this one made it onto my list unlike their last album. Also his album was in a three-way tie for 10th place in my list. Anyways, this was a strong release from them. I love how they really figured out what it was they wanted EFMB to sound like. It's different, more symphonic, a bit on the gentle side; all while still maintaining that fairytale essence that we've all grown to love from them.
Favorite songs: 1. Shoemaker 2. Noise 3. Tribal
9. The Birthday Massacre - Diamonds
Tumblr media
I'm not gonna lie, I fell off these guys a bit in recent years since their newer music wasn't doing enough for me. This album definitely changed that. This album is so lovely. I definitely love how they're going in a more ambient/shoegaze type of direction now. It really adds such a lovely dimension to their sound. Yeah I miss hearing the stronger sides of Chibi's voice, but this more delicate side is really lovely.
Favorite songs: 1. Crush 2. Parallel Worlds 3. Run
8. Ani Lo. Projekt - A Time Called Forever
Tumblr media
This is a band that I discovered this year through their record label. I was blown away by just how strong her voice was. They definitely skew more towards progressive power metal than symphonic progressive metal, but I still definitely love this release. It's very strong, a lot of fun, and has a very solid production. Also wasn't expecting her to go full mezzo-soprano at times.
Favorite songs: 1. A Time Called Forever 2. Walk Alone 3. Back to You
7. Aeternam - Al Qassam
Tumblr media
This is another band I discovered this year. A model/performer/singer I like, Mahafsoun, was featured in a music video for this album so decided to give them a go. I'm a sucker for oriental metal bands. The strong production, beefy riffs, and lovely orchestrations really make this release for me. And their frontman has such a lovely voice.
Favorite songs: 1. Hanan Pacha 2. Poena Universi 3. Al Qassam
6. Operus - Score of Nightmares
Tumblr media
Once again, this is another band I discovered this year. After really liking the first song I heard from them, I decided to check out more from them. Such a great decision. This is the type of power metal I love. Dark, a strong symphonic element, and their frontman doesn't sound like every single power metal singer out there. In fact, he's a tenor! Yes, another male opera singer fronting a metal band! He doesn't go full tenor often, but when he does I always lose it.
Favorite songs: 1. La Llorona 2. Ruin 3. Lost
5. Dool - Summerland
Tumblr media
This album is so lovely. If you've never heard of this band, the best way I can describe their sound is if Black Sabbath and Fleetwood Mac had a baby. It's dark and doomy, while still having a light and airy production. I feel this album really shows off just how diverse and beautiful Ryanne's voice is. It's haunting, fun, pretty, and most importantly dark.
Favorite songs: 1. Dust & Shadow 2. Summerland 3. Wolf Moon
4. Snow White Blood - Hope Springs Eternal
Tumblr media
I had such high hopes for this release and it definitely didn't disappoint. Something that I love about this band is that they don't rely on the fact that Uli is a soprano and don't have her going full soprano in every song like most symphonic metal bands do. The fact that their lyrics are about fairytales, but they're still able to give the song such a dark spin at times is always great. The power and beauty this band exudes is so wonderful.
Favorite songs: 1. You Belong to Me 2. Never-Ending Waltz 3. Drop a Stitch
3. Oceans of Slumber - Oceans of Slumber
Tumblr media
I was a bit worried about this release at first given how different the singles were. But after giving it a full listen many times, I quickly realized I had nothing to worry about. It's still very different, but it still sounds like them. It has the heaviness of Winter and the darkness of The Banished Heart, but they also played with soul and low key have a country song on this release. It's such a unique release for them, but those haunting vocals and dark landscapes remind you it's them.
Favorite songs: 1. Pray for Fire 2. A Return to the Earth Below 3. I Mourn These Yellowed Leaves
2. Arkan - Lila H
Tumblr media
I was not expecting to love this album as much as I do. I had a feeling I'd really like it, but nowhere to this degree. It's so powerful and intense while still managing to maintain a level of beauty thanks to Manuel's cleans. The dualities between beauty and intensity play so well together on this album. I also love how proggy this album is compared to previous releases. It gives it such a fresh feel to it.
Favorite songs: 1. Black Decade 2. Shameless Lies 3. Crawl
1. Delain - Apocalypse and Chill
Tumblr media
Am I biased given that Delain is my favorite band of all time to have them be my favorite release of the year? Yes. Do I care? No. The production on this album is so good and I love how much they experimented with new things (having a choir, Charlotte screaming on a track, leaning into djent a bit more) while still staying true to themselves. And the theme of the album is really great look at the world, especially given how shit this year was overall. And just a heads up about the favorite songs, Masters of Destiny isn't on there since it was on Hunter's Moon which was released last year and I listed it as a favorite off that release.
Favorite songs: 1. Burning Bridges 2. The Greatest Escape 3. Combustion
And that’s all for 2020! Although this was a pretty shit year, there were definitely some amazing albums to come out of it. 2021 is already starting to look like a fun year for music and I cannot wait to hear what amazing gems will come out of it. But until then, I hope you all enjoy this list!

Fantasy and Adventure New Releases, 17 August 2019
Pre-Flood Giants, superhero brawlers, and Monster Hunters fight it out in this week’s fantasy and adventure new releases.
Cain (Lost Civilizations #8) – Vaughn Heppner
Fallen angels came to earth seeking the most beautiful women, having children by them, the Nephilim. The fallen angels left, but their demonic offspring remained, thirsting to conquer the Pre-Cataclysmic World so they could rule as gods.
One of the most oppressive is Gog the Oracle, a pitiless monster. He has gathered his galleys and enforcers to crush those who have risen up to resist him. He also seeks Cain, the deadliest swordsman in existence, the first murderer and ageless wanderer. Cain will be his hidden blade to strike at his enemies.
Lod leads those who have thrown off their Nephilim shackles. He has vowed to break into Gog’s swamp-city and end the creature’s reign of terror.
Now the hour of retribution is at hand as Gog’s enforcers sharpen their swords and as men train mammoths for the battlefield. Now the plans of demon and human clash head on, winner take all.
From the Ashes – edited by Chris Kennedy and Christopher Woods
In the late 2020’s and early 30’s corporations managed to render the major governments of the world obsolete. The big corporations owned most of the territories as well as the majority of the world’s wealth. While many of the old traditions were still observed in various parts of the world, the true power was with the corporations.
In the late 30’s, what would be known as the Corporate Wars began as larger companies initiated hostile takeovers in a whole new fashion. Employees, armed with corporate weapons, warred for dominance. It was a bloody time, and many small corporations were destroyed, as were a lot of civilians in the wrong place at the wrong time…as well as those who’d been buying the wrong products.
On May 1st, 2067, it all ended in nuclear fire.
Sixteen outstanding authors have come to this Fallen World with stories that take place from the islands off the coast of Washington to the plains of central Europe; from the swamps of Florida to the streets of Philadelphia. These stories document the fall…and introduce you to people who might just drag civilization back from the ashes…
Gemini Warrior (Heroes Unleashed: Gemini Man #1) – J. D. Cowan
The night shift at a science lab sounds like the break Matthew White has been waiting for. A steady paycheck. A simple job. Absolutely no contact with another human being.
It’s perfect.
But Matthew gets more than he bargained for when he accepts a different position with the company. A job that is highly paid – and highly bizarre. He is plunged into the terrible machinations of his new boss, Mrs. Stohl, and a sullen teenaged boy named Jason is along for the ride. The fact that Jason is practically his twin only makes it all creepier.
Dragged through a mirror into an alien dimension, Matthew is in way over his head. He should have known the job was too good to be true. To escape, Matthew and Jason must brave the wilds of this new universe and learn to control their new powers.
And hardest of all, Matthew must learn to be a hero.
Will they escape Mrs. Stohl’s terrible plans for them? Can they make it home to their world, or will they be trapped in the mirror dimension forever?
Mad God’s Muse (Sins of the Fathers #2) – Matthew P. Gilbert
The fate of the world rests on his shoulders. Will he crumble?
Ahmed’s faith is strong, and so is his sword-arm, but as for details, those were for his fallen master. Now, he must somehow rise to the task of leading his men and, by Ilaweh’s grace, thwart the Dead God’s apocalyptic prophecy.
But how can he command hardened veterans of war, men with much blood on their hands, when he has accomplished so little in his young life?
If Ahmed can earn their respect, there might still be time to do as his master had hoped–ally with the sorcerers of Nihlos. They are dangerously unpredictable and capricious, perhaps even mad, but their power is undeniable.
Ahmed will need that power. For he knows something even his master never guessed: their ultimate destination is the true heart of darkness. An ancient city of evil and death that none survive.
A Mark of Kings (The Shattered Reigns #1 Audiobook) – Bryce O’Connor and Luke Chmilenko
Despite his youth, Declan Idrys knows of the evils of the world. He knows of the bastards and brigands who plague the King’s lands, of the monsters skulking in the wooded depths of the realm. Together with his companion, Ryn – a beast of rather peculiar talent – he has spent the last decade of his life beneath the bloody banners of a half-dozen mercenary guilds, hunting precisely such festering wickedness within the borders of Viridian.
Unfortunately, fate is quick to pull on the leash of its favorite children. When one particularly troubling contract goes sideways, Declan and Ryn find themselves thrust into a war thought legend and long-ended, a conflict so old it is synonymous with a time in which dragons still ruled the western skies. Now, as dead men rise from their graves and the terrible beasts of the northern ranges descend into the kingdom with an appetite for savagery and flesh, Declan is faced with a profane choice. He can turn, can flee an ancient rising horror that would see the realms of man left as shattered death and wind-blown ash.
Or, Declan can face this mounting threat, can come to terms with the fact that his oldest friend might just be more than he appears, and learn to wield an ageless power all his own.
Centuries pass, after all, but the Blood of Kings does not fade….
Monster Hunter Guardian (Monster Hunter International #7) – Larry Correia and Sarah Hoyt
When Owen Pitt and the rest of the Monster Hunter International crew are called away to mount a month’s-long rescue mission in a monster-infested nightmare dimension, Julie Shackleford—Owen’s wife and descendant of MHI founder Bubba Shackleford—is left behind. Her task: hold down the fort and take care of her new baby son Ray. Julie’s devoted to the little guy, but the slow pace of office work and maternity leave are starting to get to her. But when a routine field call brings her face-to-face with an unspeakable evil calling itself Brother Death, she’ll get more excitement than she ever hoped for.
Julie is the Guardian of a powerful ancient artifact known as the Kamaresh Yar, and Brother Death wants it. In the wrong hands, it could destroy reality as we know it. Julie would die before giving it up.
Then Ray goes missing, taken by Brother Death. The price for his safe return: the Kamaresh Yar. If Julie doesn’t hand over the artifact it means death—or worse—for baby Ray. With no other choice left to her, Julie agrees to Brother Death’s demands. But when you’re dealing with an ancient evil, the devil is in the details.
To reclaim her son, Julie Shackleford will have to fight her way through necromantic death cults, child-stealing monsters, and worse. And she’ll have to do it all before Brother Death can unleash the Kamaresh Yar.
It’s one woman against an army of monsters. But Julie Shackleford is no ordinary woman—she’s one tough mother!
The Spirit Binds (Elemental Academy #5) – D. K. Holmberg
The Inquisitors have been stopped, but the one who leads them remains at large.
Tolan discovers a dangerous plot against the Academy—and all of Terndahl—the Inquisitors have planned for far longer than any have suspected. The power involved is unlike anything ever encountered by those within the Academy. Tolan isn’t sure he’s capable of understanding what has happened, but with his connection to the elementals, he might be the only one able.
The key to what’s happening is tied to something in Tolan’s past. For him to stop the one who leads the Inquisitors, and to understand what they’re after, requires him to know more about where he came from and why his parents left him in Ephra.
Stopping the Inquisitors is only the beginning, not only for Tolan to save Terndahl, but to finally know himself.

Nepenthe was a force to be reckoned with at Piranha Bar this past Sunday. Their brand of atmospheric, Gothic-tinged, ultra-sad doom metal brought a tear to my eye and pain to my neck the morning after. This band is absolutely worth checking out if you get a chance to see them live!
