Westley Alexandre Evans was born to Laurence and Ada Evans on October 24, 1998, in Salem, Massachusetts. Ada was known around their neighborhood for being so sweet and friendly, while Laurence was known as one of the officers of the SPD. Wes was their quiet but intelligent son, who was the top of his classes and was complimented for his talents as a young pianist. On the outside, the Evans were a perfect little family, and they were, for a while.
There was no way to forget the first night it happened, the yelling and sound of glass breaking, along with the feeling of the sharp pieces of glass cutting into his back as the bottle shattered against him. It was seared into Wes’s mind, and he had a scar to show for it. Laurence had always been an angry man but after a traumatic night on the force, Laurence was never the same. He drank until he became so poisonous and cruel that he was nearly unbearable to be around, and no matter how many people’s suspicions grew that something wasn’t quite right, no one did anything.
Ada stayed, and Wes could never understand why. Years went by, and there was nothing left in Wes but a cavity, one that only seemed to be filled by anger and loneliness. He got into fights at school because he just couldn’t tame his anger any longer, and he lost his virginity at sixteen, hoping to fill the void with something— hoping to feel anything that wasn’t loneliness or sadness.. And even though it was a fleeting feeling of warmth and fulfillment, he still went after it, sleeping around and hoping one day the pain wouldn’t come back afterwards.
When Wes turned eighteen, he wanted to do something about Laurence, but all his attempts were failed ones. The SPD were friends of Laurence’s and given that Wes didn’t have the cleanest record with them, they discarded his concerns. And while Wes’s Aunt was constantly calling him and telling him that if he ever needed anything, she wouldn’t hesitate to fly him out to Aurora Bay, he couldn’t bring himself to take her up on it. Because Ada stayed, Wes stayed. He wanted to make sure she was okay.
Years passed by, and one day Ada was gone. She’d finally left Laurence, but not only him, she’d left Wes. With nowhere else to turn to and no one left to protect, Wes called his aunt and took her up on her offer to fly him out to Aurora Bay.
Wes’s Aunt helped get him all settled into town, helping him get an apartment of his own, and a job as a waiter at Neptune since she was such great friends with the owner, James Levin.
Now Wes is trying to create a new life for himself in Aurora Bay while trying to leave behind his painful past.

Good morning! I hope you slept well and feel rested? Currently sitting at my desk, in my study, attired only in my blue towelling robe, enjoying my first cuppa of the day. Happy Hump Day!
Yesterday was full-on, mate! Three, two-hour classes! Really enjoyable but exhausting! I slept very well. My weekly teaching schedule is so busy, I am not going to break my neck to fill my weekends with activity. I suspect, come Friday, I will be happy for my week to end!
One of the films I saw on the flight over was ‘A Man Called Otto’, featuring Tom Hanks and his son, Truman. Probably not the best film for an emotional person like me? I’m eight miles high and crying my eyes out. Not a good look. Tom Hanks usually gets involved in good projects and this is no exception. One of the striking things I found was the number of poor films within the selection. I started about three films and stopped them after 20 minutes! Thank goodness I hadn’t paid money to see them. Overall, I was happy with Virgin Atlantic but there’s no accounting for passengers. I had this petite woman sitting next to me but she had her elbows in my ribs the whole flight.
At one of the places I teach, they have Music Industry Monday. They have a purpose-built theatre in the basement of their building and they invite music industry folk to be interviewed in front of an audience. These are so good, they put them on Eventbrite, so members of the public can attend. In fact, they’ve asked me to be the interviewer, so I’m looking forward to learning more about the nuances and specialist skills within the music industry. Monday just gone, they asked ME to be the interviewee so, there I was, up on stage, the tables turned, getting interviewed about my career, Kiss FM, MTV Base etc. There were a couple of cameras on me, so I suspect clips of this may turn-up on social media soon?
I’ve got another appointment at the recycling plant on Thursday morning. I am still drowning underneath all my clothes, so I need to clear-out some drawers of stuff I am never going to wear again. I don’t even buy clothes (The Trouble buys most of my stuff!) Anyway, I need to fill at least two black plastic sacks and I’ve told my son I’ll take whatever he wants to go. I know I’ve got tons of records, CDs and DVDs but, believe it or not, I am a very tidy and organised person.
This week’s Executive Producer is that power-packed, pint-sized personality, Debra Marie Wallace, who I love very much. She was one of my constant companions at the Ibiza Soul Week in 2022, and I will never forget her friendship and kindness. Naturally, for saying all of that, I will get a slap on Saturday but I believe in expressing my emotions. Men are crap at expressing emotions, aren’t they? They’re crap at saying, “I love you!” or even “Thank you!” Obviously, it helps if there are people you love and I am blessed with numerous amazing friends who absolutely rock my world!
Mixcloud finally unrestricted last Saturday’s show. The THIRD time I’ve had a show restricted and unrestricted. I know what I’m doing. I know the rules. Please mark my profile as, “Knows what he’s doing!” Disappointed that I can’t do big artist tributes, however, I have created some songwriter and producer shows which are two hours’ long, still obey all the Mixcloud rules and I look forward to unleashing them soon.
Have a wonderful and well-endowed Wednesday. I love you all. Yes, a crazy, bald man loves and cares about you.

How relevant is service differentiation for one-time economy flyers?
Most of my friends and I search for flights through sites like Google Flights and SkyScanner, where we see the date, time and price of the flight. Now that flight comparison sites are commonplace, I wonder how easy it is for airlines to differentiate beyond their utilitarian offering. There's no 'level of service' metric on these sites, so, especially for first time flyers on an airline or price-conscious flyers, there's limited ability or desire to select a flight based on service. I've been flying around the US for a year and a half now and I couldn't tell you what differentiates the standard airlines (United, Delta, American; I can tell you what differentiates Spirit...), as I almost always just use a flight comparison site to find the best time and price.
That said, when it comes to repeat flying or premium class flying, this is likely different. For example, when I was first selecting which airline to fly from London to the US with, I knew this would be a consistently repeated route for me and, thus, I wanted an airline where I was happy to accrue points. My options at the time (coming out of Covid) were BA and Virgin Atlantic, and I went with Virgin Atlantic because I think their service is significantly better than BA's. Given minimal price differentiation and the knowledge that I would be doing this route repeatedly, I picked the airline that I thought had the best in-flight experience.
That said, despite the fact that I have little knowledge of airlines' reputations, and despite the fact that I have only ever flown to Singapore once, in that instance I deliberately picked a Singapore Airlines flight because I had heard of their excellent reputation. Branding works!

[M/M] [Sex Work] [Overstim] [Dirty Talk]
Jenny is sitting back in the wicker café chair, looking every bit the relaxed retiree she is. She looks tan. She looks good. She’s squinting at Lee’s phone, because it will be a fair few years before she admits she needs reading glasses, one leg folded over the other, bouncing her foot around with such lazy enthusiasm that Lee worries she’ll kick her cappuccino off the table. Lee thinks Jenny could still be infamous, charging S1,000 for an hour of her time, if she wanted to.
Then again, youth sells was one of the first slivers of advice Lee had managed to pry out of Jenny, after he’d sworn up and down that he was going to go into this line of work no matter what, with Jenny’s blessing or without it. “A lot of these guys are looking for something new. Their lives, their wives, their first-class trans-Atlantic flights, it’s all old hat. You get to be the shiny new thing on the block.” Countless people looking to break into the industry must have solicited help from Jenny over the years. Lee still hasn’t wrapped his head around why Jenny sees potential in him in particular.
But Lee likes being shiny. Likes being appreciated, desired, noticed, scouted. This isn’t the least logical career choice he could be making.
“Your site looks good. Who’d you hire to do it?” Jenny asks, incredulous.
Lee tries not to look too pleased. He knows it looks good. It’s got SEO coming out of its ass, too, but that’s all hidden. “I did it myself, ‘s not that hard. What do you think about the photos?”
“They’re nice.” Jenny zooms in with two fingers, considering. “Tasteful. In my day you paywalled anything racier than underwear shots, but these days all bets are off.”
“Did those myself too.” All it took was a secondhand DSLR, a couple of ring lights, and a bootleg copy of Lightroom.
“You’ve got a full bio, gallery, wishlist, and services page, and you haven’t even had a client yet?”
Lee crosses his arms in front of him, tucks his chin into the neck of his hoodie. “With how much you’re telling me to charge, I can’t have anyone realizing this is my first go ‘round. Everyone wants a virgin but no one wants an amateur.”
“Hey, don’t quote me at me,” Jenny warns, but she looks fond. “Please tell me you’re at least not planning on dressing like this.” She looks Lee up and down. Her evaluation of Lee’s dress sense is obvious.
“I’ve got nice clothes,” Lee protests. They’ve all still got the tags on, but he was going to make sure he tried them on before his first booking. He’d just been really busy.
Jenny is unconvinced, but she doesn’t say it. She just smiles over the lip of her coffee, looking satisfied with the execution of her mentorly duties.
“Here,” she says, and reaches under her chair. She brings out an expensive-looking shopping bag, the kind of thing Lee wouldn’t dream of touching on his student budget. “I know it’s just going to end up on the floor, but I can’t have any protegé of mine wearing something that came from Target.”
Lee wants to argue, but he’s gone all in on being cheeky, not rude. He’s already taking Jenny’s time, mentorship, advice, and gifts. He doesn’t need to try her patience as well. “Thank you.”
Jenny waves him off. “Don’t worry about it. Just promise me you’ll be safe, alright? Remember the basics? You’re your own best friend when you’re out there. Just— keep your head on straight, yeah?”
Lee nods but if he’s being honest he’s thinking more about how much he’d like to be like Jenny, when he gets to be that old. Jenny’s got croissant crumbs down her blouse and doesn’t seem bothered by it. She’s embodying a kind of unselfconscious ease that has been totally alien to Lee’s twenty-one years on earth. But maybe he can be like that one day. Maybe once enough people tell him he’s beautiful in cold, hard cash.
⁂
The guy’s “name” is Andrew, and apparently he’s a cheapskate because he only books an hour-long session. Still, the message is the most exciting email Lee’s received since his college acceptance.
He tells Jenny the time and place and makes plans to check in five minutes after the session is meant to end. The check-in and a can of pepper spray in his backpack are all he has in terms of safety, a fact which only really sinks in once he exits the elevator and is finally alone in the silent, extravagantly carpeted hotel hallway.
It all feels a bit surreal. He’d asked himself a million times if he was really ready for this and made sure the answer was an emphatic yes. He’d thought about it for so long, planned it down to the millimeter. But he still has to focus on the things that remind him that this isn’t a daydream: touching the silky lining of the sharply cut blazer Jenny bought him, checking the Signal notifications on his phone, running his finger over the condom packet in his back pocket to make sure that it’s still there. There’s probably never been a more important time to think with his head and not his dick, but he’s already half-hard in these new paint-on jeans.
Eventually, he just stuffs his headphones into his bag and tries to focus instead on not obviously blushing, on not thinking too much about how good it felt to finger himself open in the shower before he left, on not accidentally knocking on the wrong room.
Andrew is wearing an oversized tie-dye t-shirt when he opens the door. The floor behind him is covered in discarded clothes, and the air is thick with herbal steam from the shower. “Hiya, Gordon?”
Lee tilts his head in a way that he hopes comes across more as an interested coquette than puzzled bird. “Hey, Andrew? Can I come in?”
Lee had expected older. A lot older. Andrew seems youthful at least. On the inquiry form he had unhelpfully listed his occupation as traveling businessman, but with his tattoos, he looks more like a lifestyle influencer. He’s got a smile big enough for YouTube, beckoning Lee into the room like they’re old friends and not strangers. “Sorry about the—er—everything. Travel lifestyle, you know how it is.”
Lee hasn’t traveled in years, but his website still has a Fly Me To You section. He glances at the dresser. There’s a heavy, expensive-looking watch laying on its side next to an unmarked envelope. Just where he asked for it. It’s odd to think that he’s set the rules of the interaction before they’re even met, but he supposes that’s the point. “Don’t worry about it. I’ve seen worse.”
He should really, really count the money first. Another winning piece of rookie advice from Jenny. He slips the envelope into his pocket instead.
He can feel Andrew watching him. He examines the view of the city through the picture window instead. “Are you in town for long?”
“Through the end of the week. Do you deepthroat? It didn’t say in your bio.”
Jesus Christ. It sounds like he’s asking Lee what he had for lunch. Lee doesn’t miss a beat though, just arches his eyebrow and turns to look Andrew in the eyes. “Er, yeah? Part of the job description, isn’t it?”
Andrew shrugs. “Takes all sorts.” He pulls his shirt over his head, revealing more tattoos and tan skin. He is, truth be told, very good looking. Lee goes to the gym, obviously, and the photos on his website were specifically taken to showcase it. He never expected a client to give him a run for his money. Andrew really doesn’t need to be paying for sex, but Lee won’t be running out to file a complaint. “We don’t have that much time, I figured I might as well get comfortable.”
“Yeah, of course. You, uh, you look really good.” Lee does his best to keep up. He’s meant to be the impressive one here, not the other way around.
Still, Andrew seems charmed by it, smiling as he sits on the edge of the bed. He spreads his legs wide, relaxed and lazy and completely unsubtle. It’s as wide-open an invitation as Lee will ever get. He strips off the jacket and folds it over the chair in the corner with as much care as he can. Then he shucks off the rest of his clothes onto the floor before he can second-guess himself. Andrew just stares with open appreciation, especially when he gets to the things the photos didn’t show.
“Do you mind if I—?”
“No, go ahead,” Andrew says, his voice dry. It may have been a prepared line but it works, and has Andrew leaning forward in anticipation as Lee’s underwear falls to the floor.
It’s a little embarrassing to be so hard already. Ideally, Lee would like to be a little more aloof, playing a little harder to get, a seasoned professional. Still, he strokes himself a few times, since Andrew is watching. This is all happening quicker than he’d imagined, no polite small talk, but he’s not sure he could have waited much longer anyway. Anxiety and arousal are working together to slowly swallow him whole. He can’t really believe he’s doing this.
Condom, right. Remember the basics. He snags it from his pants and sinks to his knees with as much grace as he can manage, which isn’t much. It’s familiar and strange at the same time, but he relies on his instincts and doesn’t waste any time. Andrew hardens nicely against his lips, the satisfying physical evidence of what Lee can do to guys, when he tries.
There’s no use playing coy when Andrew’s been so upfront about what he wants. Lee takes a deep breath and relaxes his throat, then takes Andrew as far down as he can manage. It’s worth it for how Andrew goes from silent to swearing in no time at all, his fingers tangling in Lee’s hair.
Just as Andrew is getting completely taut and hard on Lee’s tongue, and Lee starts letting pride drive him to suck deeper, to the edge of gagging, Andrew tugs lightly on the back of Lee’s hair, pulling him away. Lee goes, looking up at Andrew with big eyes. He knows he looks good. He keeps working Andrew’s dick with his hand, pleased by how he can make Andrew bite his lip and breathe out hard.
“Not yet,” Andrew says, stopping Lee’s hand with his own. He still squeezes hard at the base, looking down at Lee with a spark of something mischievous in his eyes. He ushers Lee to his feet and onto the bed, maneuvering him with warm, steady hands until he’s bent forward over Andrew’s lap, his ass high in the air.
Of the less-bad scenarios Lee had imagined for tonight, the worst was if he had to lead the whole thing himself and improvise a suite of suitable sex acts that would get him a good rating on PrivateDelights. Andrew, thankfully, seems more than willing to ask for what he wants. Lee tries not to feel too much like he’s slacking on the job.
“This is what I’ve been thinking about all day. I was looking at your pictures.” Lee preens a little at that, rocks back and forth on his knees. Andrew hums and runs a hand down Lee’s side, across his abs. “Couldn’t stop thinking about how I was going to get my hands all over you. I already got myself off in the shower once before you came.”
Andrew’s voice is nice. It’s low and always seems to be poised on the edge of a joke, which makes it more satisfying when he turns dead-serious and filthy. The head of his cock brushes Lee’s thigh, but Lee ignores it for now, Andrew’s attention clearly all on him. This is something he’s confident that he’s good at, taking the attention with an aw-shucks bashfulness that he’s been assured is a much more popular persona than a dirty-talking porn star.
There are two lube-slick fingers rubbing at his hole, and then they’re pushing in, slow and firm. Lee forces himself to relax and properly enjoy it. He’s been turned on for so long, he can’t stop himself sighing in relief. The stretch is delightful and so much better, thicker, than when he did it himself. He curves his back a little deeper, presents his ass with a little more flair, and moans when Andrew adds a third finger.
“I wish you could see yourself right now,” Andrew breathes, his breath blowing across Lee’s lower back, sending pinprick shivers up his spine. Lee can imagine it, but he wishes he couldn’t. The thought is too much, too quick. Andrew’s hands are so big, his fingers would be stretching him obscenely wide. Lee wants more, wants a break— he needs a clear head, but his neurons are only transmitting analog fuzz, no signal.
They’ve got an hour to kill and Lee is going to come before his guy even fucks him. It’s just poor customer service.
Andrew rubs slowly, purposefully over his prostate. It’s a blast of static at the edges of Lee’s reality, slowly occluding his other thoughts. Lee moans into the duvet, a bit of precome dripping off his cock and onto Andrew’s knee. Andrew chuckles at that, bringing his other hand up to rub his palm over Lee’s balls. “That’s good for you, then?”
“Oh, you might want to— Your hand on— I might come.”
Andrew just leans in closer, so he can whisper right into Lee’s ear. “That’s so fucking hot. Do you think you can handle me inside you when you’re all sensitive?” Lee squeezes his eyes closed and nods his head. He can do anything, if he’s asked. He can be good, adaptable, impressive, worth it. “Good, I want you to try. I want to see the faces you make.”
“Anything you want, Andrew.”
“I want to see you suck your fingers, will you do that for me? That’s good, just like that, nice and full.”
It doesn’t take long after that. Andrew fingers him in time with short, quick strokes over his cock, keeps running his mouth about how he looks so pretty, baby, yeah, just let go, just let it all out. Andrew is so clearly getting off on how into it Lee is letting himself be, so Lee slips his fingers out of his mouth and yelps when he comes, rides it out and thrusts back on Andrew’s fingers until it’s too much stimulation to bear. Then he collapses across Andrew’s knee.
Andrew keeps his word and barely gives Lee a second to recover before he picks him up by the hips and flips him over so they’re face-to-face. It’s the closest they’ve been to kissing, Andrew staring down at Lee as he struggles to catch his breath. He disappears for a moment to wipe the mess off his thigh and then he’s back, pushing Lee’s knee up towards his chest and whistles when he sees how far it bends. Lee does not have the spare mental capacity to even be proud of himself anymore. “You ready?” Andrew asks, rubbing the head of his cock over the lube on Lee’s inner thigh.
“Yeah, yeah, go on, please—”
Andrew hisses as he pushes in with one slow thrust, bottoming out and sitting there as Lee spasms around him.
Lee doesn’t know what to do with his hands. He grasps at the sheets and covers his face and grasps at Andrew’s shoulders and keeps moving because all of his nerve endings are firing at once and the energy from it needs to go somewhere. Andrew only pulls out halfway before pushing back in, not relenting for a moment. “It’s, ah, it’s too much, but don’t, don’t stop—”
“You can take it darling, you’re perfect for this, come on.”
Lee anchors himself to the bed, caught between pushing back into Andrew’s thrusts and squirming away from the overstimulation. It doesn’t help that Andrew is rubbing his thumb over the come-sticky tip of Lee’s soft cock in time with his thrusts. Andrew is so focused on him — it’s nothing like he expected. He thought of himself as entering a service industry, but here he is letting Andrew do all the work. The feeling of Andrew watching his jigsaw expectations fail to fit is almost as overwhelming as the sheer physical sensation of being dragged to the limit and hauled over it without warning.
Lee wants to say something to wrestle a bit of control, a bit of dignity back, but Andrew can’t seem to stop talking. “Jesus, you’re big. I bet all the guys love that big dick, don’t they?”
Lee almost chokes on his own tongue “‘S all yours,” he bites out. He can still do this, sell the fantasy— exclusivity, for an hour.
But Andrew doesn’t seem to want to play ball. “Bet they want to see it bounce when they fuck you, huh? They want to see you come all over yourself while you ride them?”
Lee can barely focus on Andrew’s words, on formulating a reply, let alone on keeping his back arched and his eyes half-lidded like a centerfold. He probably looks sweaty and half insane by now. Andrew’s cock keeps glancing off his prostate, an electric shock every time.
“You’re my first,” Lee admits, before he can stop himself. Andrew stops moving. Fuck, shit, shit. “I mean, I’m not, I have had sex before, don’t worry—”
Andrew is still very much balls deep in Lee’s ass and breathing hard. “But you’ve never done this before, sunshine?”
Lee is now very, very glad he has his eyes closed. He really looks like a fucking amateur now. He can feel the blush spreading down his neck, giving him away, but still, he smiles through it. “Someone had to be the first client, right?”
Andrew swears under his breath. “You know, I wouldn’t have guessed. You’re a natural.”
He pulls out slow and then shoves back in, knocking Lee’s breath out of him with the force of it. It takes no time to get back up to pace, even faster now, like being first really turns him on, makes him want it more. Andrew’s bracketing him with both arms, his body so close over Lee’s that Lee can smell Andrew’s eucalyptus aftershave and feel his breath on his neck. “You take my cock like you’ve had a lot of practice. You do this a lot? You figured you could get paid doing what you love, laying on your back and just taking it?”
Lee is caught out entirely. It makes his heart beat in double-time, makes him want to haul Andrew closer. “Yeah, you’re right, fuck, don’t stop.”
Andrew laughs at that, a burst of hot air against Lee’s ear that somehow feels as good as getting fucked. “Wouldn’t dream of it.”
Lee should have his guard up, should never have let it slip at all, but he’s too far gone now. If all the guys can be like Andrew, he doesn’t think he’ll ever quit. “Wish you could fuck me without the condom,” he says, which is stupid, so incredibly stupid and dangerous and goes against everything he’s told himself but he means it and the thought alone is making him hard again, fuck. He wants every guy to be like Andrew but he really, really can’t do this ever again. It’s too late to think about it or say anything different. He opens his eyes in time to see Andrew’s eyes go almost comically wide.
“Wish I could too, wish I could see my come dripping out of you. You look like an angel, baby.” Andrew’s getting wild, arrhythmic, and Lee does his best to squeeze tight and wring it out of him.
“Call me Lee.”
“Yeah? Want to give you everything, Lee. Want you to take it ‘cause you like it.” His fingers dig deep into Lee’s hips, as though it were possible for them to be any closer than they already are.
There’s $600 in cash in an envelope on the floor, and that’s reason enough to like this, but Andrew is pulling Lee back onto his dick with every thrust and Lee is throwing every carefully learned lesson about how to get fucked for money out the window, along with his higher brain function. Andrew’s hand is so good, almost painful on Lee’s cock and Lee’s name is on Andrew’s tongue, and Lee just about chokes out, “I like it, I like it,” before Andrew groans into Lee’s neck and trembles through his orgasm.
Slowly, slowly, Andrew disentangles himself from Lee’s body, lets go of his hips, slides out of him, flops to the side and stares up at the ceiling like he’s been etherized or maybe just struck over the head with a heavy object. His dumbstruck silence feels like a victory, even though Lee is similarly quiet. Lee just focuses on how Andrew’s breathing slowly goes back to normal and wonders how exactly he let himself fuck up this badly. He’s still maddeningly hard, again, and he can’t do anything about it but breathe and try to let it go like an unscratched itch.
Maybe when he gets back to his flat he can count the money and actually get himself off again, thinking about Andrew’s scent.
If he does this again, he’s going to have to prepare better. If he does this again, he’s going to have to be ready for clients like Andrew, who are hot enough and attentive enough and responsive enough to stroke his ego in just the right way to make him utterly stupid.
He rolls over and kisses Andrew for what feels like the rest of the hour, then grabs his clothes and leaves just in time to pick up Jenny’s call.
⁂
Lee gets back from his evening lecture late. Nothing would feel better than turning off his brain, eating the leftover pasta in the fridge, and falling asleep watching speedruns. Still, he checks his email as he shovels the spaghetti into his mouth, because that’s how his life is now. He’s a young businessman, of sorts. An entrepreneur. There are a few new inquiries in his inbox, but the guys don’t have any references. Apparently they can’t read the rules. He marks them read and moves on, slowly putting his fork down as he spots a familiar name.
From: [email protected]
Hey Lee, I mean, Hey Gordon ;) I’m in town again this week. I was hoping to connect... i heard you’re doing overnights now?
Either way, here’s the place I’m staying. Can i reach you at the same number?
Andrew
P.s.
Do you take gifts? I was just in paris and i couldn’t stop thinking about you
Lee should really just mark it read like the others. He has plenty of regulars on his calendar, and more inquiries than he needs to fill in the gaps. He’s got a cozy, steady business going. Rookie mistakes can stay rookie mistakes. Jenny taught him that. But the idea of being thought of, longed after, by a handsome man on the streets of Paris — well, he’s only human isn’t he? It’s been a year, but he’s still got Andrew’s number in his phone. He licks a spot of tomato sauce from his lip and tries not to smile too hard when Andrew texts him back immediately.

Happy 82nd Birthday Scottish yachtsman, rower and soldier Sir Chay Blyth.
Born Charles Blyth on May 14th, 1940 in Hawick, in the Scottish Borders, the youngest of a family of five girls and two boys. At the age of 15, he left school and went to work for a local knitwear factory as an apprentice frame worker. This career was short-lived as, proudly Scottish, Chay signed at age 18, for the Parachute Regiment where he rose quickly through the ranks, becoming sergeant at the age of 21 – the regiment’s youngest ever Sergeant at that time. In 1966, Blyth teamed up with Captain John Ridgeway to row across the Atlantic from Cape Cod to the Aran Islands in a 20ft dory. They completed this in 92 days.
In 1971, having left the Army three years previously, aboard the 59ft ketch British Steel, he became the first person to sail non-stop westwards around the world against the prevailing winds and currents. Before the attempt, Sir Francis Chichester commented that he thought the voyage was impossible, and on completion it became known as ‘The Impossible Voyage.” The Times newspaper described it as, ‘The most outstanding passage ever made by one man alone’.It is still considered the toughest challenge in sailing; only five people have ever managed it, a number which becomes more significant when compared to the 12 people who have walked on the moon.
The plan began in earnest to sail the ‘wrong way’ round the world in 1969, but it wasn't until 18th October 1970 that Chay Blyth departed from Southampton on board the 59ft ketch, British Steel.
His voyage had never been done before: to sail single-handed, non-stop, westwards around the world. Blyth returned to a hero’s welcome 292 days later.
Since that year, he has accumulated a staggering list of racing successes: 1973/4: skippered Great Britain II in the first Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race with a crew from the Parachute Regiment. They won the elapsed time prize and nine out of the 12 trophies. 1978 he won the Two-handed Round Britain race with Rob James. In 1981 the Two-handed Transatlantic race with Rob James breaking the record
It wasn’t all plain sailing though, pardon the pun, in 1984 Chay capsized in Beefeater II off Cape Horn and spent 19 hours in the water before being rescued; A year later he had to be rescued in the Atlantic from Virgin Atlantic Challenger, which sank. But in 198 Blyth co-skippered ,with Richard Branson, the successful Blue Riband transatlantic attempt on Virgin Atlantic Challenger.
In 1989 Chay founded Challenge Business, a market leader in creating, managing and promoting World Class events, as part of his work with the company he e mentored fDee Caffari on her successful bid to be the first woman to sail around the world against the prevailing winds and currents in 2005–2006.
In 1997, Sir Chay was Knighted for his services to sailing, am not keen on the honours system, but in some cases recognition like this is merited, Chay is a very brave guy who succeeded against all the odds at times in a prusuit of goals that almost cost him his life. The second pic show the pair celebrating her return.
In 2013 aged 73 Chay was still involved in his first love of sailing, in his yacht Wullie Waught he sailed round the world taking part in events worldwide. The yacht’s name was inspired by the great Robert Burns poem.
And there's a hand, my trusty fiere! And gie's a hand o' thine! And we'll tak a right guid willy waught, For auld lang syne.
At the time Chay commented “ My trouble is that I still think I’m a 26 year old Paratrooper instead of a 75 year old with a gammy leg! My mind wanders back now and again”

19. playing with each other’s fingers
Ross&Demelza
I apologize, @veryflowerobservation, for taking so long to post this. It sorta got away from me :P I hope you enjoy!
This fic is a prequel to Tears and Sunflowers.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
It was an ungodly hour. This having to get to the airport a minimum of four hours before an international flight was for the birds. Their flight to New York was scheduled to depart at 8:35am. Ross didn’t even know why he bothered to attempt to catch a few hours of sleep the previous night. Demelza was practically vibrating with excitement in the bed next to him. She had never flown before. So he’d done the only thing he could do in that situation -- help her work off some of that nervous energy -- and he bore the marks on his shoulders to prove it. He just felt sorry for the very nice elderly couple who were occupying the room next door to theirs at the hotel.
He checked his watch with a groan.
6:21am.
He thanked the good Lord above for exclusive traveler lounges. If he had to queue with the masses in the main terminal, he might not be responsible for his actions. That early in the morning, access to only that swill that passed for coffee at Costa, and masses of travelers with varying degrees of comportment would have him seriously contemplating murder. It would be a very poor defence if he was brought before the crown court, but surely an understandable one.
“You should eat something,” he said to her after she kept fiddling with the fingers of his hand resting on the knee if her crossed legs. They were cuddled together on a small sofa in a quiet spot where she could take in all of the hustle and bustle of the enormous lounge. There were quite a few people for that early in the morning, but there was so much space that it hardly felt crowded. He could feel her leg bouncing as she wiggled her foot. “The food is usually pretty exceptional.”
“I don’t know if I could,” she told him, weaving their fingers together and stilling her fidgeting for a moment, “too excited.”
Ross snorted softly as he was never one to be too nervous or tired to eat something. “You could get a haircut or a massage instead,” he teased, glancing over to see the expression on her face. The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse Lounge at Heathrow was an overwhelming place with all sorts of over-the-top posh amenities. She was impressed they’d been picked up at the hotel and delivered to the airport in a private car and then were whisked through priority check-in and security in a matter of minutes.
“Really?” she asked, eyes widening with the obvious sensory overload she was experiencing.
“Yes,” he assured her, chuckling a little, and knowing her head would have exploded if she knew how much two upper class tickets had cost. “There’s a spa too and shower rooms.” Ross had wanted her first international flight to be comfortable and memorable, but he feared it might set her expectation a bit high for any future trips they might take. There was a far cry between the pampering in upper class and the indignities of the overcrowded economy class. It was just as well because he would need the extra legroom these days with his stiff knee.
She pressed a little closer to him and her fingers toyed with the heavy rose gold band he wore on his left ring finger that matched the more delicate one she wore. “You want to eat something don’t you?” she inquired.
“What I actually want is coffee,” he paused for a moment, his stomach answered her question with a low grumble, “and I probably could nosh on something.” He’d opted to keep his eyes closed for a few precious minutes while she got ready instead of sending for room service, safe in the knowledge that there would be an abundance of food and drink provided by the airline.
“I can try to nibble on something.” She pressed a kiss to his scruffy cheek before standing up and holding her hand out to him and he couldn’t help but notice his beautiful wife attracting the attention of several of the men around them. Demelza was comfortably dressed in jeans that showed off her long legs to perfection and a deep gold turtleneck topped off with a rich brown leather jacket, and her glorious crown of red hair was barely contained by a loose braid.
Within a matter of minutes, he was attempting not to guzzle a cup of expertly brewed Sumatran coffee while waiting for his fry up to be brought to him. Demelza carefully sipped her steaming cup of tea, but left her plate of assorted breads and pastries untouched. He reached across the cozy dining table to snag a flaky and buttery croissant off the plate.
“You’re going to eat everything off my plate aren’t you?” he asked when she raised an eyebrow at his thievery.
“Noooo,” she swore, her eyes following the heavily laden plate an attendant placed before him followed by another to replace his near empty coffee cup with a fresh one.
He picked up the knife and fork to start in on the perfectly poached eggs after a liberal dousing of pepper. “You too can have your own plate. All you have to do is ask.”
“I don’t think I could!” she insisted, stabbing a bit of roast potato and grilled mushroom with own fork.
“Likely story,” he snorted, pushing his plate to the middle of the table so she could graze more easily. This was a common occurrence with her -- insisting she couldn’t possibly then proceed to demolish his plate in fairly short order. It always happened when he ordered something that was absolutely terrible for him, but so very good for that exact reason. Anyone else and Ross would find the behavior less than endearing.
“Are you going to tell me why we’re going to New York?” she queried while attacking the fried bread to smear in the runny eggs he had somehow managed to get a few bites of before she could turn her sights on them. “Not that I’m complaining mind; I’ve always wanted to go, but it’s a long way for a few days.”
It took everything in him not to blurt out the reason for what seemed like a sudden weekend jaunt across the pond, but actually had been in the works for months. She loved Van Gogh. The Met was having a once-in-a-lifetime exhibit. How could he not take her? “I told you I really wanted good pizza.”
“Oh, Ross,” she sighed in frustration, then changed her tactic. “You’ve been to New York before then?”
“Loads of times,” he answered, slathering strawberry jam on his croissant since it was becoming abundantly clear he wasn’t going to get to eat the breakfast he’d ordered himself, “though it’s been a few years now. Father used to go fairly regularly for business and would drag me along.”
“What did you do when you were there?”
“I used to spend a lot of time at the natural history museum and the New York Public Library.”
“Of course you did,” she smiled fondly as she spoke. She was well aware of his love of doing research and learning.
“I like dinosaurs,” he said matter-a-factly, "and the museum has an amazing exhibit.” It was true. He did like dinosaurs, even now, and he’d wanted to dig for them up until the point he discovered girls were infinitely more interesting, and alive. Demelza didn’t need to know that bit though.
“You are such a boy,” she said with a shake of her head. “What else did you two men do on the town?”
“Sometimes we take in a show or go to dinner at fancy restaurants. I didn’t realize it at the time, but he was trying to teach me a bit of culture. One time we went because Papa wanted to see Van Morrison at Radio City Music Hall.”
“Really?”
He chuckled, surprised that little piece of information had taken her by surprise. She did know his father pretty well at this point. “He is a fan.”
“I’d say so. He can be so impulsive!”
“You have no idea,” Ross drawled, tamping down some very unpleasant memories from his youth that she need not be burdened with, “you didn’t know him in his heyday.”
She smiled fondly, and it warmed Ross’ heart that his wife and his father got on like a house on fire, but he could not help the occasional flare of jealousy it caused. “I bet he was quite the charmer back then,” Demelza giggled.
“You’d probably be married to him instead of me,” he said with a fair dash of bitterness. There were still a few things he just could not let go of and he knew it as childish to hold on to them for as long as he had, but then logic and his father were often mutually exclusive.
“I dunno about that.” Demelza reached across to take his hand with hers, twining their fingers and giving them a little squeeze, her eyes going soft as she looked at him. “I sorta kinda love you.”
“Only sorta kinda?” he teased, pulling her hand up to place a playful kiss to her knuckles.
“From the first time I saw you in the library,” she confessed, her cheeks suddenly blooming pink.
“Is that so, Mrs Poldark?” That was news to him and he was most definitely intrigued. Ross had known he was a goner for Demelza the first time he laid eyes upon her, even if it took him months to actually admit to himself, and then even longer to let her in on his feelings. He’d had no inkling she’d felt the same. So much wasted time.
“Saved by the boarding call,” she crowed when the announcement of their flight interrupted their playful banter, and quickly began gathering up her things. The head of the cute little calico stuffed animal cat he’d surprised her with that morning was peeking out of the top of her purse. The airplane charm that had been on the ribbon about its neck had quickly been added to her bracelet.
He grabbed up his laptop bag to sling over his shoulder and his cane. “Don’t think for one second that this conversation is over.”
“Not if I can make you forget about it,” she said with what could only be described as a diabolical grin.
He eyed her with great suspicion. It wasn’t in her nature to be scheming that much he did know, but she was definitely up to something. The question was going to be whether or not he’d survive whatever it was. “And just how do you plan to do that?” he challenged.
“Oh, I dunno,” she purred, taking his hand before pressing in close to him to place a very sweet and demure kiss to his cheek. “Have you ever heard of the Mile High Club?”

Sometimes it seems like young people are not growing up as fast but it also seems that parents don’t want their children to grow up. The standards that they set for their kids are very rigid and when the children do not reach those standards they want them home. For example, how many people are living in their parents’ homes because they did not get a job in the field that they got their degree in? Unless you are earning significantly less than what you would have made or made before (ex: you were a mechanical engineer and then work at Baskin Robbins), there is no reason to go live with your parents. It is extremely common nowadays to not get the exact job that fits the degree you got. If we really want to get into it, think about these founders and CEOs/former CEOs of the biggest companies in the world. Bill Gates (Microsoft), Whitney Wolfe Herd (Bumble), Sara Blakey (Spanx), Sophia Amoruso (NastyGal), Emily Weiss (Glossier), and many others did not have degrees in business, some not even having degrees in the field that they are in, and yet they are now extremely successful. Why continue to be so rigid? Why can’t an English major get a job in finance or an engineering major get a job as a museum curator without it being the end of the world? Maybe in 1980 it would have been easier. You get a degree in something, get a job in it, and work at the same company for the rest of your life until you get your pension (although most companies have done away with that), but things have changed significantly. Companies do not care if you work for them for years. They will fire you if they feel they can get someone to do your job for cheaper (especially if that job can be done by someone in a 3rd world country). Why make mugs in America and pay people $70,000 a year, a salary that is ever increasing with the unions interfering, when you can manufacture those same mugs for almost the same quality in a factory in China (insert any country you want here)? Why pay some “entitled” American $160,000 a year to be a software engineer when someone from India (again, this can be any country) will come in and do it for $80,000 because they really need the job? Loyalty to one organization will place you in a precarious situation. Unfortunately, those events usually do not occur when you are first starting out at your job. It happens when you are comfortable, when you are married and have two kids and another on the way, when you have a mortgage, when you have taxes, and other responsibilities that rely on you keeping that job with that exact salary.
Given the events illustrated, it would be unwise to only look for employment in a certain field or only get masters and PHDs in whatever field you got your bachelor’s in. It is extremely limiting and parents know this. These recent recessions have taught us that nothing is for certain. One day you may have a job and the next you will be fired for a reason out of your control. Even big companies like Virgin Atlantic, Hertz, J Crew, and Brooks Brothers were affected so greatly that they filed bankruptcy. Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns, the most well-known banks in the world, closed for business in 2008 due to the financial crisis (ignore the politics, please). What makes parents think that their child, in this big world, can combat all of that by living at their home until they can get a “proper” job in the field they got their degree in? Why would they succeed where many others have failed? Why would they encourage their children to search for such positions and never dare branch out? Why is this fear so prevalent? Is it a generational idea? Does it have more to do with class, education, life experience?

Teen twin sisters create handcrafted candle company
Twin sisters and high school students Janie and Lauren Noel’s hand crafted candles allow them to give back to an organization that is near to their hearts.
In their early teens, the pair needed to fundraise for a class trip to Greece. They had the idea to start a candle company.
“Candles have always been a very big part of our life, mom always had other candles or incense burning while we were growing up, and so it just came to us very naturally,” said Janie.
First, they researched — watching YouTube videos and even connecting with other candle makers through Facebook.
Their mom helped with the website, and in August of 2021, Noel and Co. was launched.
“The response has been amazing. We were not expecting all the response from the community,” said Janie.
“We focus on having eco-friendly and socially conscious materials, so all of our waxes are 100 per cent natural virgin coconut soy. And we also have wood wicks that crackle when they burn, so that’s pretty cool.”
When Lauren was 13-years-old, she had two kidney transplants. The first transplant failed, but the second was successful — leaving the Noel family looking for a way to give back.
“My family and friends and I have so much gratitude towards my donors, Dr. Acott, and his team at the IWK, he essentially gave me my life back,” said Lauren.
Two per cent of all proceeds from the sale of their candles go to the Atlantic Kidney Foundation.
“It was a great opportunity to give back,” said Lauren.
Their mom, Raina, says her daughters pour their heart and soul into the company.
“I’m really impressed with their entrepreneurial spirit and it’s really infectious. I’ve loved watching them put in the hard work and their dedication and seeing the reward from everything they’ve been putting in has just been fantastic,” said Raina.
The sisters say they enjoy working together, but Janie said there is one ground rule.
“As soon as one of us puts on our headphones, it means we need to kind of like take a little bit of a break.”

1994-2020: Faye Wong Advertisements (2020)
On August 19th, Faye Wong was officially announced as the newest global spokesperson for the underwear brand NEIWAI, which shocked the industry.
What’s interesting is that underwear advertisements are usually extremely sexy and show a lot of skin. But because it’s the heavenly queen, it became a high-class style of sexy. The heavenly queen’s image on the posters is quite covered up and her poses are elegant and comfortable as usual. It is rumored that Faye Wong's endorsement fee is sky high.
The former brand models Maizi and Du Juan gave the impression of coolness. Faye Wong is definitely the master of this temperament to the extreme.
The press release by NEIWAI said that they aim to "explore the freedom of body and mind in a more pioneering, profound and international way." Indeed, the endorsement of the heavenly queen suddenly added a touch of international style and high-class to this domestic brand that was founded on Taobao not long ago. It gives that feeling no matter what the cost is.
You must know that Faye Wong has always been very picky about advertising. Before NEIWAI, she accepted an offer to be the global spokesperson for Helena Rubenstein in 2019. Last December 7th, L'Oréal Group's top luxury beauty brand Helena Rubenstein announced that Faye Wong became the first global spokesperson for its brand.
I still remember the queen attended the promotional event in all white and wrapped her head in a golden scarf. Her skin looked smooth and firm. The most impressive thing was that her facial features were more beautiful than even when she was young. It was surprising. After all, the queen is over 50 years old.
I could see that she was in a very happy mood, chatting and laughing with the host on stage. She described this cooperation as proof that it was love at first sight. The flawless firm skin of the heavenly queen can help a beauty counter to sell thousands of bottles of expensive product.
For so many years, Faye Wong was sought after by advertisers for her image as a high-end, avant-garde, free spirited woman of a new generation. Her manager once proudly said that their main job was rejecting offers. Faye Wong’s advertisements are notoriously sparse and also notoriously expensive.
Today, let’s take a look at the advertisements by the Heavenly Queen since her endorsement debut from 1994 to the present day. It can be seen that her strategy is "less is more". The big brands she has cooperated with, of course, pay well. Ease is another important criteria for her to choose a job.
The advertisements that Faye Wong has received over the years reveal the changes in the status and mood of the queen. Of course, we can also see the changing of the times from her advertisements. Popular brands that are still ongoing, but some brands have completely ceased to exist. The changes and the rise and fall of a brand is really interesting.
1994-1997
Avant-garde idol, trend setter for the youth.
In 1994, Faye Wong released her iconic hit "Sky" making her the free spirited idol of the young generation. That year she received an advertisement for Just Gold.
At that time, the Hong Kong-based gold jewelry company was preparing to enter the Taiwan market. In order to abandon the old and outdated feel of the past style, this brand, hoping to find young customers, wisely found a budding singer who was also ready to enter the Taiwanese market. Back then she was called Wong Jing Man.
In the advertisement, Faye Wong read the narration in her beautiful languid voice. The whole concept seemed to be very trendy and forward-thinking, making women suddenly realize they do not need to wait for men to buy them gifts and gold jewelry. They can own it on their own initiative. It was the new idea of feminism that women rely on their financial strength to satisfy their inner desires.
Just Woman, Just Gold; Real Woman, Real Gold. Faye Wong's life attitude of being courageous to live her own life fits the brand's pursuit of "real woman" characteristics. The following year, the brand also specially designed the "Fei collection" with the theme of "true", "beauty" and "life".
Coincidentally, the Virgin Atlantic advertisement of the same year also took a fancy to Faye Wong's distinctive personality.
At that time, Faye Wong's performance in the movie "Chunking Express" left a deep impression on people, and in the advertisement, she also had a similar short haircut, various styles, and she even had airplane props. She swayed her body and narrated in Cantonese. This advertisement made the top ten of Asia TV in 1995 and won the most popular TV commercial female star award.
In the ad for Virgin Atlantic's direct flight from Hong Kong to London, she used her hearty laughter to inspire people to take off whenever they pleased.
Faye Wong became a big hit in 1996 and appeared on the cover of Time Magazine. She became the second Chinese artist and the first Chinese singer to appear on the cover. She was called one of "The Divas of Pop".
Faye Wong willingly lived in a Beijing hutong for love, married Dou Wei, and gave birth to her daughter Dou Jingtong in January of the following year. The old photos of the two riding horses in Yesanpo bared witness to years of love.
Marriage and childbirth did not affect Faye Wong’s status. In October 1997, Motorola hired Wong Kar-wai to direct and spent 60 million on a large production to shoot her StarTAC (Palm Treasure Series) commercial. Anyone who has experienced that era knows that Motorola had a monopoly on the mobile phone market.
But with the advent of smartphones, after 2013, Motorola long lost its momentum. Motorola’s headquarters in Beijing has been downsized repeatedly. The era of holding a Motorola in one hand is gone forever.
Although shooting only lasted for 5 days, it was a huge collaboration: big name stars, director Wong Kar Wai, cinematographer Christopher Doyle, and designer William Chang. It was a movie level production. And the actor was Asano Tadanobu who was popular in Japan at that time. Reportedly, the reason for seeking him back then was because his hair was messy enough to match with Faye Wong.
The whole commercial lasted less than 30 seconds, but it was full of Wong Kar-wai's individualism and uniqueness. It is considered the most unusual commercial advertisement. And Faye Wong, whose pay was as high as six figures per hour, had only two lines: "Moshi Moshi".
Photographer Wing Shya also shot a set of print advertisements. Ah Fei as seen through the lens was smart and playful. With brilliant colors, it is entirely worthy of blockbuster art.
1999—2003
The fast-moving market adores the unconventional idol
In 1999, Faye Wong divorced the talented Dou Wei, which caused a commotion in the entertainment industry.
Pepsi spent 8 million Hong Kong dollars to invite Faye Wong, making her the first Asian female singer to endorse Pepsi. You must know that Pepsi’s strategy for so many years was aimed at the youth market. The stars they have invited over the years were the most popular among young people.
At that time, the commercial "Wish" depicted Ah Fei returning to an elementary school and seeing a little girl who resembled herself when she was a child. She recalled the scenes from when she was a child, expressing the theme: as long as you work hard, your wish can come true. The commercial song "Spectacular" was co-written by Faye Wong and Zhang Yadong, and included on the album "Only Love Strangers".
The following year's "Starry Sky Infinite" was a collaboration with Aaron Kwok. One was the god of water and the other was the god of ice. In the hot summer, the collision of ice and water brought coolness and pleasure.
Everyone remembers this poster. The heavenly king and queen who were still youth idols back then sang the commercial song "Starry Sky Infinite" together.
Faye’s styling in the ad now seems very ahead of its time. It was bold and creative. Whether it was the mini skirt with fishnet stockings or exaggerated color eye shadows, it is fashionable and cool at any time.
Also at that time, the theme song "Eyes On Me" of the classic game "Final Fantasy VIII" became popular in Japan. The song made the top ten of Japan's Oricon charts and Faye Wong also became a Japanese J-Phone mobile phone spokesperson.
As we all know, Japanese brands prefer their own artists, so Faye Wong's ability to break through and occupy a space is enough to prove her strength.
The six commercials that J-Phone shot for her at that time were all very advanced and full of new ideas.
The following year, she starred in the Japanese TV series "Usokoi" on Fuji TV. She worked with Takaichi Nakai and became the first Chinese artist to star in a Japanese drama as the main heroine. Unfortunately, the ratings were lower than expected.
At the beginning of 2000, Faye Wong became the spokesperson for Head & Shoulders and it was rumored that the remuneration at that time was 32 million Taiwan dollars (about 8 million Hong Kong dollars).
The commercial contained 6 cool styles. The production cost was as high as 15 million. The jingle was her newly created song "Chanel", which was intoxicating and psychedelic.
What’s interesting is that she cut her hair super short when she attended the press conference. When asked by reporters whether this style would conflict with being the spokesperson, she replied in a way that is still so cool, "Don't you need to wash short hair?"
If the advertisements for the above high demand products were expected, Faye Wong's acceptance of the following brand is more interesting now.
In 2003, Baleno spent 5 million a year to invite Faye Wong to become a spokesperson. Baleno was first known as a Hong Kong brand. In 1996, it was sold to Guangzhou Deyongjia Group and then regarded as a mainland brand.
But it was willing to spend money to invite the most popular celebrities to endorse. At its peak, it had 4,000 stores in the Mainland. Andy Lau and Faye Wong were invited to be spokespersons.
The phrase "brand, Baleno" caused everyone to laugh.
Ah Fei shot the posters and could manage all kinds of exaggerated makeup as always. At that time, Li Jianhui once wrote about the influence of Faye Wong on Baleno - hiring her was an upgrade for the entire brand.
The following year Faye Wong became the spokesperson of Louis Vuitton in the Asia-Pacific region. A series of print advertisements shot that year now looks very advanced. She is lying sexily and lazily on a white sofa, and her poses exude a different charm with each different set of clothes. The Heavenly Queen had such magical powers and her cool expression enchanted people.
2004—2005
Getting older and moving towards the high-end market
Which brand was Faye Wong most responsible for helping to enter China? There is no doubt that it is Celine. It is Faye Wong who brought this French brand into the hearts of every Chinese woman who loves fashion.
In October 2004, at the age of 35, Faye Wong attended Celine's 2005 Spring/Summer Fashion Show in Paris as a close friend of the brand.
The queen’s photoshoot on the streets of Paris expressed her attitude towards life. She exuded self-confidence and self-reliance even when she was just standing.
In early 2005, Faye Wong appeared on the cover of the Hong Kong edition of "HARPERS BAZAAR" wearing Celine.
The magazine’s fashion spread was a blockbuster for Celine - just by simply sitting at a dining table, revealing her slender legs. The styles were both casual and fashionable. This photoshoot perfectly fits Celine's brand aesthetic with Faye Wong's own personality: cool and sassy.
She also wore Celine's 2005 spring and summer collection and participated in the opening ceremony of the new store in Hong Kong.
For the next ten years, Faye Wong’s favorite was simply only Celine. She took brand promotional photos. She went to fashion week to participate in brand events. She was photographed in major magazine editorials. Even in her private birthday celebration, she wore none other than Celine.
Celine's fashion style fits her own personality. She appreciates the brand's neutral, functional, and concise design concept, and its pursuit for a free and comfortable attitude of living.
Just as she always dared to love and hate, in the Spring of 2005, it was reported that she and Li Yapeng were about to marry.
It was also at that time that she had her first skin care product endorsement, Jovell. At the time, it was reported that Jovell paid tens of millions to invite her to become a spokesperson in Asia.
The Heavenly Queen was over thirty and her perfectly maintained face couldn’t not be used as a skincare platform.
This commercial was based on her daily work environment, with pure English narration. In April, she also attended the brand's launch event in Hong Kong. She maintained an awkward and polite smile, but she did not accept interviews during the whole process.
The endorsement was not satisfactory. Jovell, a brand used by so-called Hollywood stars, applied for liquidation after the defendant defaulted on a loan at the end of 2005. They were desperate to invite the queen to help out. They wanted to take advantage of this momentum to come back to life, but unfortunately could not in the end. Because of the company’s liquidation, there was no money for payment. Faye Wong's management company issued a lawyer's letter to claim 4 million Hong Kong dollars in remuneration, and it went to the High Court.
2005-2011
Coming back is not easy At the end of May 2005, Faye Wong’s manager, Katie Chan, confirmed to the media that the Queen had started an "indefinite rest".
On July 28th of the same year, Faye Wong and Li Yapeng married in a low-key banquet in Beijing. The wedding photos taken at Tianshan were only revealed many years later in a Smile Angel Foundation promotional video.
Faye Wong retired for four full years because of her marriage and newborn daughter, during which she only sang theme songs for a few movies. There was always news that she was going to make a comeback, but in the end it turned out to be nothing.
Until 2009, on the 20th anniversary of Faye Wong's debut, news confirmed that she was about to come back to endorse a shampoo brand. The sky-high price discussed was higher than Jackie Chan. It was also reported that it was because of Li Yapeng's failed businesses that the Queen had to return to make money.
The rich and powerful Bawang Group gave enough money and not much additional conditions. The two sides hit it off quickly, which also kicked off the first wave of Faye Wong's successful comeback. In 2010, the queen made a triumphant comeback. At the beginning of the year, she returned to the Spring Festival Gala stage after 12 years and sang "Legend". At the end of the year, she held 10 sold out concerts.
She became the brand ambassador for the newly launched Chasing series shampoo under Bawang. Shooting shampoo ads was already familiar to the heavenly queen.
Although the brand positioned itself as mid-to-high end, the commercials were not very flattering. Heavenly Queen wore a cheongsam with a huge lotus leaf hem and neckline, walked slowly like a scallop princess. The whole advertisement fell flat.
It can be said that this was a low period for the heavenly queen. Whether or not it was satisfactory, it was a means to make money. But I have to say that Faye Wong's role in the brand was still very obvious. The products turned out to be famous all over the country.
Although money is earned, the risk of advertisements is also high. First, in 2010, a Hong Kong weekly magazine slandered Bawang shampoo for containing carcinogens and the herbal line of shampoo endorsed by Faye Wong was also not spared from testing. The star’s credibility was questioned for a while.
It took Bawang six full years to sue for defamation. In the end, they won the lawsuit, but only received a compensation of 3 million. However, the accumulated losses caused by the damage to its reputation over the years reached 1.7 billion.
Then at the end of 2014, it was reported that the intermediary claimed the fee from Faye Wong. When the case came to an end, the intermediary who originally claimed 3.35 million received only 600,000 compensation. Although the queen was cautious, she was sometimes not 100% insured. It was inevitable that there would be disputes.
2012-2020
Safe and easy money is the priority In 2012, she endorsed a dairy brand with sky-high prices. Yili Jindian Organic Milk, which focuses on high-end dairy products, coincides with Faye Wong’s status as a queen. The brand used her super popularity and influence to broaden its appeal and greatly increase sales.
Faye Wong’s commercials could be seen everywhere on major TV stations and variety shows. The contents of these advertisements contained similar features of natural innocence and quality.
The beautiful grassland featured in the commercial is located in the Shin Kong Chao Feng Ranch and Resort in Hualien, Taiwan. It was also called "Faye Wong Prairie" after the commercial became popular.
She has been cooperating with Jindian for nearly ten years and each year's commercials are considered by fans as a new opportunity to see their idol again. This year's newest commercial was no longer limited to the grassland, but used light and shadow effects and it was just perfect.
In recent years, Faye Wong was really low-key.
The protection and mystery of her private life has deepened the public's desire and imagination of her, so that every public appearance of hers causes an uproar and there are always speculations about how big a bargaining chip is used to invite her to appear.
She has also been questioned a few times about making money. For example, the biggest public backlash came from her Fantasy Music concert at the end of 2016, which caused controversy because of the high ticket prices.
This was her return to the stage after her 2012 tour ended. The cheapest ticket was as high as 1800 and the most expensive ticket was 7800. This triggered an "anti” storm and she was accused of marketing and money-making. Although the organizer clarified afterwards that the production cost could not be reduced because of technical requirements such as global live streaming, the public did not buy it.
After 18 years, she participated in her first variety show, Hunan Satellite TV's "Phantacity", where she was rumored to have been paid hundreds of millions of dollars. The news at the time stated that "the investment of the program is more than 300 million, of which 150 million is used to invite a certain heavenly queen." Of course, they also say that the top price of super first-line talent like Faye Wong is worth it.
When the MC He Jiong questioned her on the show, "Why did you want to come here?", she still answered so bluntly, "Because it’s easy."
It really was easy. Just sitting and talking can make you money.
This was a highly anticipated show that invited a large number of stars. But since the post-production process is too boring and many technical highlights couldn’t be shown on the TV screen, the freshness of the first two episodes faded and the following episodes were weak. Even Faye Wong could not save the ratings from declining. However, her performance in the last episode fulfilled fans' dreams.
Every time someone asks: is Faye Wong short of money?
Nonsense! Who is not short of money? The heavenly queen is human. She also needs to make money to pay for living expenses, including children's tuition and so on. Children’s education, the monetary cost of maintaining her own high standard of living (nanny, maintenance, self-care, etc.), and preparations for retirement, these all cost money.
Therefore, it is not difficult to see that the advertisements taken by the Heavenly Queen ten or more years ago were lively, interesting and creative. But after her comeback in 2009, they have been more grounded in a sense of reality. The long-term ten-year contract like Jindian Organic Milk is more worry-free and comfortable.
There is no longer a need to tailor songs for advertisements. You can easily make money by showing your face and narrating. Why not do it? It’s safe, worry-free, and comfortable. These are the benefits of advertising.
Of course, some people ask, why does only Faye Wong have such an influence in the advertising industry? It seems that you can pay anyone to stand there. Why don’t her contemporaries have such influence?
This only further proves that Faye Wong's body of work is excellent. She had continuous creativity and was always fresh. As the goddess of the music industry, she has been influential several times. Faye Wong is the only super queen recognized by audiences on both sides of the strait. By gaining a big market, it is the simplest answer to this question.
Secondly, Faye Wong has an unparalleled personality. Her charm lead her to become an era’s rising female power and a new generation female legend. In layman's terms, she has lived the life that everyone wants, which is why she can bless the brand.
Her personality and charm is her brand premium. Her international style and her unconventional life are also her brand premium. This is why TV stations and merchants are willing to spend sky-high prices to invite her, because they can use their own efforts to upgrade the brand's profile.
As for making money, Faye Wong is also a human being, not a god. Like you and me, she has to work in life.
As for the so-called lowering herself to common mortals, as she herself once said, "I am not as perfect as you think and I admit that sometimes I can't tell the true from the false." And sometimes mistakes are inevitable.
For 26 years, Faye Wong chose her advertisements. When watching these advertisements, we clearly saw time fly past us at a fast speed. The light and shadows were dazzling, and I sighed.
What can we say? The era has chosen Faye Wong and Faye Wong has accompanied us in every era.
She can do whatever she wants, since she has already given us beautiful moments in music.

The Devil Baby of Hull House
For six weeks, in 1913, Hull House in Chicago was swamped with people demanding to see the devil baby, who had been left there by distraught parents.
The legend of this baby swept through the city and country, as people ventured forth, to see the devil incarnate.
Hull House is considered to be one of Chicago’s most haunted buildings. Although the nature of the building was for all intents good there have been several times throughout the years where events have been on the grim side.
The building itself was built at 800 South Halstead Street in 1856 by Charles J. Hull (hence the name of the building). The neighborhood was seen to be quite ‘fashionable’ and life looked to be good for Hull, his wife and their children. Unfortunately Hulls wife passed away leaving him to care for their two children who also passed away within a decade of another and quite young.
Hull eventually moved to another part of Chicago but it would seem his deceased wife chose to stay, haunting the room she died in.
The house itself survived the Chicago Fire of 1871 but the neighborhood did not fair so well. Soon the area became filled with immigrants and the reputation of the area dropped significantly. In the mid 1870’s the house became a home for the elderly poor and no doubt saw more deaths during that time.
Although many more mysterious events took place in the building (small unexplained fires, the appearance of a woman in white, figures seen about the halls, curtains refusing to stay closed in one of the empty rooms) it was not until 1913 that an event began that saw Hull House enter the more mysterious side of Chicago’s history.
In 1889 Jane Addams and Ellen Starr co-founded Hull House, a ‘settlement house’ where the immigrants from many nationalities and cultures could come and be socially reformed. It was here that these working class people could come and take part in programs and education to allow them a better footing in their new country. The programs were a success and more buildings were taken on by the founders in order to spread the program wider and further afield.
But it was one day in 1913, after many years of successfully running this settlement house, that events took on a strange and possibly sinister turn…
Three Italian women entered the building with much fuss and excitement. They demanded to see the devil baby!
The residents (Hull House volunteers) stated they had no idea what they were talking about but the excited women persisted. They knew the devil baby was in the building and they kept demanding to see it.
If there was a devil baby on site the residents would surely know about it as it was unmistakable with its cloven hooves, tail, pointed ears and ability to speak even at that early age.
Although the Italian women eventually left they were but the first of many, many people who made their way to the house in order to see this devil for themselves. Hundreds, thousands of people from the neighborhood all made attempts to see the devil baby, some even offered to pay for the opportunity. However none were able to see the child for the residents stated time and time again that it never existed.
It was not just the poor or superstitious who made the journey to the house but even physicians who had heard of the child wanted the opportunity to study it. Soon people from outside of the Near West Chicago area were calling by, people from all over the country wanted to have a good look.
For about six weeks there was a heavy flow of traffic throughout the neighborhood as people made their way to Hull House, all to be told to leave that the story was just an ‘old wives tale’, albeit one that had gotten some pretty good legs under it.
As for who this devil baby was and how it came to be at Hull House… well there are several different versions of the story but two seem to have the most tellings:
A devoutly Catholic woman hanged a picture of the virgin Mary on the wall but her aethiest husband tore it down. He stated that he would rather have the devil himself in residence in the home rather than that picture on the wall. Several months later the woman gave birth to a deformed child – hooves, claws, tail, pointed ears. The shock was too much for her to bare and she passed away, the husband took the child to Hull House and left it on the door step.
The other version concerns a man whose wife gave birth to six daughters. The husband was enraged by the lack of a son and cried out one night that he would rather her give birth to the devil than another girl… and you can guess what happened next.
From here the stories converge with the child being taken into care at Hull House. The child was said to be quite a little fiend and was capable of the greatest of blasphemies. The heads of the organisation took it upon themselves to have the child baptized in order to sooth it of its demonic afflictions but the baptism did not go to plan. The child escaped their clutches at the waters edge and took off skipping across the tops of the pews.
They were able to recapture the baby and then had it locked in the attic of the house.
From there it is not known what happened except somehow this story got around and now thousands of people were turning up to get a look.
The visitors and the story seemed to run out of steam and the legend was all but forgotten.
That’s not quite all there is to this tale. Though it might not be connected, when the house was being renovated near the turn of this millennium there were a number of reports concerning the sounds of a child’s cry coming from the attic and gardens…
Jane Addams, although bothered by the near ending flow of visitors, did find this event in the homes history to be interesting, so much so that she wrote quite a long and extensive article about it in the Atlantic Monthly way back in 1916.
The Jane Addams Hull House Association closed down in January 2012. the building is still open as a museum.

A love of the sea … and students
By Eric Foster, senior publications designer and marketing specialist
When Cynthia Venn teaches a class about the world’s oceans… she’s teaching from direct experience.
Venn joined BU’s Department of Environmental, Geographical and Geological Sciences, as the oceanographer in 1996. She had already established herself as an in-demand oceanographer for research trips at sea in the summers and a go-to adjunct professor to teach oceanography in Pennsylvania. And she had a strong set of sea legs through research trips to the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, Arabian Sea and Antarctic Ocean.
“I love working on ships, and love travelling,” says Venn. The soft-spoken Texan became interested in the ocean as child by reading books about the famous French explorer Jacques Cousteau and his research vessel the Calypso.
“In college, I thought I wanted to pursue marine biology, so the summer after my junior year I took a summer field course in oceanography,” says Venn. “It was in the Virgin Islands, and when you take a course where your labs involve boating and snorkeling around Caribbean coral reefs, trust me — you are pretty much going to be hooked on oceanography.”
Oceanography is inherently interdisciplinary … encompassing the physical geography, geology, chemistry, and biology of the ocean. And there’s still lots to discover says Venn.
“We know more about the surface of the moon than the bottom for the ocean. Every time I go to oceanography conferences, there’s always surprises. Hydrothermal vents were discovered only in the 1970s and that’s turned biology on its head. We have animals live at the boundary of oxygen and no oxygen. There are microbes that live in temperatures of 400 degrees Celcius, or four times the boiling point of water. When I was in grad school, we believed that it there was no oxygen, there was no life and if you boiled water, it killed microbes.”
“After I finished the two year teaching stint at Millersville State College, I decided I wanted to teach in a university for a living.” says Venn, who will retire this summer after 24 years at BU. “I never thought I was going to be a teacher but I loved it. So I went to the University of Pittsburgh to get my doctorate — in geology because both oceanography and geology are cyclical but usually not on the same cycles. During my time as a grad student, if I got a chance to do or teach Oceanography, I did it. So while I was a graduate student, I also rattled around as an oceanographer for hire, going on a number of research cruises, and taught as an adjunct in Pennsylvania. I ended up being a go-to person in the system – have lectures and field gear…will travel,
“When I saw the position at BU, my mother said the ad read like my resume. They were looking for someone that could teach Oceanography and Geology, with experience teaching field courses and who could develop a course in Aqueous Geochemistry. I had worked for a chemical oceanographer for years. I had experience teaching in the field, particularly at Wallops Island in Virginia.”
Most importantly to Venn — BU’s Department of Environmental Geological and Geographic Sciences was a good fit personally. “When I got here, everybody seemed to get along really well.”
At BU, Venn’s mission has been to get her students hooked on research. She’s been a driving force behind the department’s summer geology field course trips that have taken students to California, Nevada and Utah. Students in her Aqueous Geochemistry course all do course-embedded research. In addition, she has directed a number of students in independent research.
“Everybody in Aqueous Geochemistry gets a research project,” says Venn. “That’s part of the deal, they have to present at the end of semester. I’ve had about 70 students present at regional, national and even international meetings. Several students have told me the fact that they’d performed and presented their research is what got them the jobs.”
One of those “oceanographer for hire” trips had a major impact on Venn’s own career. “My first trip in the tropical Pacific in 1993 introduced me to two of my great obsessions — café lattes and gooseneck barnacles.”
“I was on the ship to collect and analyze samples for chlorophyll. When the instruments came up, they were covered with these creatures that looked like clams on a flexible neck. Fascinating. It turned out that a network of 77 buoys across the tropical Pacific would be completely in place the next year. The research group putting the buoys out saw them as ocean instruments being fouled by very irritating barnacles they had to scrape off and throw in the ocean. I saw the buoys as ocean instruments taking valuable data while they were acting as settling plates for delightful creatures whose distribution was little understood. I asked the buoy folks: “Can I go to sea with you if I scrape barnacles, and if I scrape them off, can I keep them please?”
“That’s how ten consecutive years of barnacle sampling began. Because I wasn’t going to be able to be on the ship longer that the first one-month leg of a three-month cruise, I enlisted a former student to go with me and continue on to Samoa when I returned to teach. After that, I enlisted almost 50 students to sea to collect them on subsequent cruises.” Venn jokes, “you get lots of volunteers when you tell them ‘First, I have to fly you to Hawaii to meet the ship.’”
Venn’s knowledge of barnacles was put to the test in 2013, when she was contacted by a forensics investigator in Australia. “She needed to know how fast they grow because there were a bunch of them attached to a dead body, and she was trying to determine how long the body had been floating in the ocean. We worked together and published a paper, and I entered into my most recent research endeavor: Barnacle CSI.”
After retirement, the adventure will continue, though the grading will not. “We’re going to travel a lot. We have a boat in California and we plan to be able to spend more time sailing around Southern California and Santa Catalina and the Channel Islands….maybe even go down to Baja California. In December, we hope to fly to Chile to see the total solar eclipse and then go fly fishing in Patagonia.”
“I’ve loved teaching in a university setting since the beginning. What I’ve really loved about being at Bloomsburg is not just the camaraderie with the great students and the wonderful faculty,” says Venn. “I loved being in one place long enough to see students progress from where they were as freshmen and watching them develop a collection of knowledge and skills to where they are ready to graduate.”
