The Odyssey - finding yourself and your faith in the most honest, ethereal and magical way. And then, that's when you throw a big party.
Tumblr media
Our cultural imagination is filled with mermaids and witches, and Florence Welch is one of them. Her ethereal vocals have been leading us through her sung poetry since 2009, and in every era, she masters her craft and gifts to finally show the world her greatest spell: an album that will resonate with you for the rest of your life. And that's the case with How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful. Released in 2015, the project marked the maturing of Florence + The Machine and featured visceral lyrics about a relationship doomed to failure, which lead the listener to question themselves and embark on a journey of self-discovery, healing, spirituality, and growth, marked by ups and downs. And yes, we will all be dancing with Delilah. The project includes a short film, The Odyssey, directed by Vincent Haycock.
The Odyssey walks the line between autobiography and fantasy. Each cameo, poem, and symbol has a unique meaning. Like Homer's work, Florence and Vincent put this journey on canvas, unpacking the past, paving the present with lessons, and exploring the true meaning of love—all within the whirlwind of finding oneself in a reality where everything is conditioned by escapism.
With an intimate narrative and breathtaking cinematography featuring Florence at the center, the short film intertwines 9 songs from the album. The chapters of her odyssey vary in filming techniques, using everything from quick cuts to long, full-length sequences that bring the viewer even closer to her narrative and her pain. The short film remains honest, and there was no more truthful, intimate, or poetic way to document love, pain, ecstasy, and healing than through an entire Odyssey, turning it into art.
The Odyssey by Florence + The Machine is available on YouTube.
