Digimon Adventure (Manga) - Vol. 1
This is the manga (or manhua) adaptation of the original Digimon Adventure anime. I got my copy from the library and you can borrow it for free on Archive.org!
Manga adaptations of anime are typically cheap money grabs that just copy-paste from the anime, removing some of the soul of the original along the way. As such, I'm not expecting much from this.
Notes:
Ch. 1
-You can almost always tell when a manga isn't drawn by a Japanese artist, it's just a certain vibe (I know this is technically a manhua). That being said, the art is competent enough. Yuen Wong seems to struggle most when it comes to faces. A lot of the faces look really janky and off model for both the digimon and the digi-destined. The only other thing that's kind of off is that the text boxes are very heavily lined and take up a lot more space than I'm used to.
-When Sora is drawn in chibi-mode she has the straps of her hat up like a rabbit. At first the silhouette was so unfamiliar that I had no idea who it was lol.
-So they covered two episodes in one chapter (up until the Shellmon battle). Let's see if the pace stays that way...
Ch. 2
-This definitely has a similar vibe to most manga adapted from anime that I've read. I wonder if it will diverge from the original material at any point, too soon to judge.
-Tai says to Agumon "I'll do anything but a teeth buffing" and I have nooo idea what that means? (Is he saying "don't eat me?") Also in chapter one Izzy said "baby blue, how emasculating!" when talking about the digivice. I don't think Koushiro would ever say that tbh. I feel like spotting these weird dialogue choices is going to be the most entertaining part about reading this.
Ch. 3
-I guess we're now going at a pace of one episode per chapter, which is fine. Somehow the content still seems a little condensed with a lot of the emotional beats cut out. I feel like the setting changes every two seconds which is giving me whiplash.
-Some weird quirks: the digi-destined call their digimon by their rookie names, even when they're in champion form. Also, the artist really really likes drawing smiley faces as stand-ins for the actual characters. That's like a step below chibification lol
-I think manga like this is perfect for if you wanted to watch Digimon Adventure 02, but you didn't want to catch up on a 50+ episode anime. It's a lot faster to read than to watch. (Although probably not as satisfying overall).
Ch. 4
-More cheesy dialogue. Izzy says "don't mess with an elite hacker" to Tai lol. Koushiro is way more likeable in the original Japanese because localizations loved to make nerds insufferable in the 90s.
-It's funny, I've never thought of Tentomon as robot-like, but in this chapter he said his parts were "short circuiting" and I was like "oh yeahhh...I guess he does have metallic features"
-Did we really need that close-up crotch shot of Andromon?
-You would think that the plot point of there being editable code laying around in random areas of the digital world would have come up again, but I can't remember another time it was really used to the kids' advantage.
Ch. 5
-This panel made me laugh:
Tumblr media
(something about this phrasing and the expressionless chibis is so funny).
-And then Izzy never manually triggered a digivolution again...for some reason? (I feel like this was definitely explained in the anime, but I can't remember what they said).
-They didn't censor the poop this time! As usual, you can get away with more in print than you can on the screen B)
-They confirm that you can repel Numemon with sunlight...and then immediately the kids get attacked by more Numemon in broad daylight. Quickest continuity error ever!
-Another chuckle worthy moment:
Tumblr media
Ch. 6
-Okay, but this one had me die laughing. Just a really good dad joke:
Tumblr media
-Going from Adventure 02 back to the early Adventure days the stakes really do feel lower. No existential conundrums or human/humanoid villains to contend with. Just rampaging digis that can be easily cured.
Ch. 7
-Maybe it's just a translation thing, but sometimes the digimon act like there's one of each digimon species. Like Gomamon says "Unimon's a nice guy!" as if there's one Unimon in the world. Pretty confusing for kids. I wish mon series would just use names (they do sometimes, but it's not the status quo).
Yep, that was pretty generic. I wish they had thrown some more personality in there to make this a unique experience. I would have loved to read some final thoughts from the mangaka or to have gotten an omake of some sort. Ohhh welll...

anyways i disagree with the "bing/jiu was supposed to be canon in pidw" theory.
Here's the part of the text i always see quoted as evidence for canon bing/jiu:
Shang Qinghua raised his arms high. “Cucumber-bro,” he said, impassioned, “if the System hadn’t selected you, a loyal and die-hard reader, I’m afraid the plot would never have been distorted to this extent, right back to the outline I discarded. I wasn’t able to withstand the loneliness in real life and caved to financial pressure, so I chose to finish Proud Immortal Demon Way in accordance with others’ tastes. However, thanks to you, everything that I wanted to write has already played out before me. Cucumber-bro!” He clapped Shen Qingqiu’s shoulder solemnly, filled with deep emotion. “You are the chosen one, and my career is at last wiped clear of regrets!”
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System: Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong (Novel) Vol. 3 (pp. 345-346). Seven Seas Entertainment. Kindle Edition.
The argument is that Shang Qinghua means his original outline contained a romance between Binghe and Shen Qingqiu. I disagree with this reading of this line! For one, no discussion of the original PIDW outline ever mentions Binghe being gay, bing/jiu, etc. Here's what Shang Qinghua says about the original PIDW:
the original outline had Tianlang-jun as the final boss as a cooler, more powerful version of Binghe. Binghe would have won in the end, but Shang Qinghua never worked out all the details of their final fight.
Binghe had no romance plotline. He was destined to "fade away alone and unaging".
Shen Qingqiu and Yue Qingyuan's backstory was entirely cut because readers preferred a straightforwardly evil villain, rather than Shang Qinghua's conception of Shen Jiu as someone who was complex and had "a not-scummy side".
We get to see Binghe and Shen Qingqiu interact from Shang Qinghua's point of view both during and post-canon. If he'd planned and cut a secret Bing/jiu plotline, you would expect him to mention it then, right?
But instead here's Shang Qinghua's response to Shen Qingqiu and disciple Binghe interacting, before he knows about Shen Yuan:
This scene featuring Shen Qingqiu as the ever-attentive teacher and Luo Binghe as the clingiest hanger-on—what the hell was this?!  Don’t fucking tell me Shen Qingqiu really did go to Bai Zhan Peak and mess with people just to avenge Luo Binghe! This benevolent father and filial son act—no, no, no, it was more like “lifting one’s tray to eyebrow level”—no, no, no, “treating each other as honored guests”!8 This was even more fantastical than Shen Qingqiu and Liu Qingge’s harmonious spar. If things kept going on like this, maybe there really would be a day when they exchanged flirtatious banter. Pah, if that day really came, he’d eat three kilos of shit! After “Great Master” Airplane finished swearing, he had a rare moment of careful thought. He had never quite used classical idioms properly, and he had hauled out his limited supply to describe Liu Mingyan’s beauty. The ones he used with the highest frequency were “soft bosoms trembling” and “as delicate as the finest gossamer.” To use “treating each other as honored guests” was
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System: Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong (Novel) Vol. 4 (p. 213). Seven Seas Entertainment. Kindle Edition.
As well as:
He’s lost his memory. He definitely fell into a qi deviation and lost his memory. If this Shen Qingqiu and Liu Qingge were playing out a scene of a friendly senior and his respectful junior, full of harmonious fraternal love between fellow sect members—oh, heavens, maybe in a few days, Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe would be striking up flirtatious banter! The second after this frightful vision flashed through Shang Qinghua’s mind, a white shadow darted toward them, and something sticky and clingy suddenly threw itself into Shen Qingqiu’s arms. That soft little lump called out, “Shizun!” Shen Qingqiu was nearly knocked on his back. He swayed, then grabbed on to a thick bamboo stalk and finally managed to regain his footing. He noticed Shang Qinghua detachedly observing the scene, expressionless. You couldn’t fault Shang Qinghua for his frozen expression. At the sight of that little wee little lady-killer, with his two arms encircling Shen Qingqiu’s waist like a steel hoop, the name “Bing-ge” had nearly escaped his mouth!
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System: Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong (Novel) Vol. 4 (pp. 208-209). Seven Seas Entertainment. Kindle Edition.
And here's his reaction to post-canon Binghe and Shen Qingqiu's cottagecore honeymoon:
Luo Binghe, wearing a light black robe, his sleeves rolled high and expression severe, was currently silently…kneading dough. He was all grim concentration, with two patches of white on his face and a bit of flour on his eyelashes, like what he was pinching and pulling in his hands wasn’t a ball of dough, but a scroll containing his grand ambitions to unite all the realms! No, no, no, no, no— Shang Qinghua felt like his guts were splitting open in dismay. The protagonist he had created, the Bing-ge who emanated pure tyranny as he conquered the multitudes of stallion male protags— He was kneading dough! Making noodles! Noodles, noodles, noodles (ad infinitum)… This really was an indescribable fright!
Mo Xiang Tong Xiu. The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System: Ren Zha Fanpai Zijiu Xitong (Novel) Vol. 4 (pp. 253-254). Seven Seas Entertainment. Kindle Edition.
Shang Qinghua consistently seems very confused and disappointed about Binghe's deviation from the Bingge of PIDW. I've seen it argued that Shang Qinghua's statement to Shen Qingqiu about gay protagonists at the end of Vol. 3 is proof that Binghe was meant to be gay all along, but I would argue that Shang Qinghua's reaction to the reality of Binghe being gay suggests otherwise.
Frankly, from the way Shang Qinghua describes the writing process of PIDW--his readers wanting Binghe to push down all the ladies and kill all his enemies, Shang Qinghua constantly starting plot threads and then dropping them--it seems that the conflict between the PIDW he wanted to write and the PIDW that exists had nothing to do with the specifics of Binghe's love interests. Add on that PIDW apparently has an unusual amount of harem drama for the genre, and it seems like what Shang Qinghua wanted to write and was unable to was meatier conflicts and interpersonal drama--not gay romance.
I don't think Shang Qinghua is thanking Shen Qingqiu for having a romantic relationship with the protagonist. I think he's thanking him for making his cut Tianlang-jun plotline happen and for averting the entire harem-building plot of PIDW. (And maybe, perhaps, for writing a happier ending than Shang Qinghua was capable of creating.)

Damencio’s Best of 2020
