Create a Workskin & post to our Collection
With our deadline of April 30th fast approaching, we're now sharing our fic posting guide with you. We’ll also show you how to add the art your artists made into the fic.
There’s a complete How To under the cut.
How to: create the Workskin
You need to create the Workskin to make sure the images you put into your fic will change size according to whether your readers use mobile or desktop.
-> log into your AO3 account and go from Dashboard to Skins
-> go to My Workskins and Create Workskin
-> choose “Work Skin” if it’s not the default
-> Title can be whatever you choose, in this example it’s “Work_skin”; which won’t be available to you because it is already in use. (You need to give yours a unique title.)
-> type in the CSS code shown in the screenshot below exactly how we typed it out:
Copy the text below so you can paste it into the CSS section:
#workskin img { width: auto; max-width: 100%; height: auto; }
On the bottom right under “Actions” will be the option to Submit for you, tap/click and you’re done!
How to: post your Fic
Now that you’ve set the workskin up, you choose New Post in the top right of your browser. You fill out the Rating, checkmark the right Archive Warnings, choose the Fandom (i.e. Vikings or Vikings: Valhalla in this case), the Category that applies to your story, the Relationships, and Characters. Last but not least, you put in the Additional Tags (i.e. more Warnings, or triggers/squicks). If you need help with selecting the right Rating and Tags, this post and this infographic might be helpful to you.
Now fill in the Title of your story and check-mark the little box for Co-Creators. This is where you will add VikingsBigBang as the co-creator of your work. (Your artist and your beta reader will not be co-creators, as a bit further down on the page you have the option to gift your work to someone. That is the place where you will add your artist and have the option to mention your beta reader. It is important that they are a visible part of the posted story, since they collaborated with you!)
Then follows the box to fill in your Summary. It doesn’t have to be the same summary as the one you initially submitted to us months ago. If you want to add a note at the beginning or end of a chapter, you can check-mark the option and a box will open. Whatever you write in there, please note it will be gone if you uncheck the box!
Brilliant, you made it so far! The following screenshot will show you what to put into the Associations section:
Type in Vikings_Big_Bang_2023 under Post to Collections/Challenges and select the Collection shown in the description. (If it does not show up, simply make sure you typed the name of the collection correctly and press enter on your keyboard. You can ask us to check if the fic was added correctly!)
Under Gift this Work to, you add your Artist and Beta Reader(if you had the latter).
Select This Work has Multiple Chapters if your story has more than one chapter. You can already type in the amount of chapters it will have.
And, last but not least, you Select your newly made Work Skin (in our case, we named it “Work_skin” as shown in the screenshot above) before you get to the part where you can paste in your story.
This is how you post the art to your story within the story:
-> choose Rich Text (red arrow top right)
-> tap the image icon (blue arrow to the left)
Once you have tapped the image icon, a little box window will open in which you have to insert the Source. Writers, you will receive the image address to insert from your Artist.
Not all image addresses work, the most effective ones are from Discord or Tumblr. Don’t worry, you don’t have to actually upload a post in order to get the image address, a draft works totally fine! (You can also post it privately of course, just in case Tumblr is its usual hot mess)
In the following screenshot you can see we have entered an image address already. Please add an Image Description of the image you are posting, it will be for those who use TTS-text to speech to have someone read the story out loud. This feature accommodates visually impaired people, but also those who simply like to listen to a story. It will be nice for them to hear what they would see in the image. You can be as detailed as you like.
For the same reason, we urge you to not use dividers like “***” or “°°°” to split up your text and rather use AO3’s dividing line or one that your artist made for you. With the latter, you can write “Divider” in the text description of the image.
Next is Width and Height, which are both automatically generated. Even if the image pops up really big when you tap Save, remember that you used a Work Skin which will adjust it accordingly for your readers once it is posted (but you also see the end result of it in the drafts already).
You can Preview your story to check if everything is to your liking or Save To Drafts before the Deadline if you want to have the chance to Edit it again.
Please remember to set yourself a reminder if you put it in Drafts, lest you are under the impression to have submitted your story when in fact it’s still in drafts!!
Since you put VikingsBigBang as Co-Creator, you don’t have to worry about changing the publishing date of your work. We will change it for you, so your work will pop up as a new one on AO3 and your subscribers will get a notification of a new story!
If you have any further questions, feel free to use our Discord server or message us via DM.

So that post I just reblogged complaining about Bioware and its handling of religion in Mass Effect. Part of the reason it resonates with me, particularly the bit about Turian Heaven, is, well.
I'm pagan. My Gods are Odin and Loki and Thor, and I routinely have dealings with Njord and Aegir and Ran and Mannanan Mac Lir. And if I had a nickel for every time Valhalla is referred to as Viking Heaven I'd never work a day again in me life.
I'd have more money than Bezos.
Do I recognize that it can be a convenient shorthand? Yes. Have I used it myself? Yes. Although mostly when I was younger and stupider and before I learned better.
Because Valhalla isn't really a reward. And neither is Folkvanger. And Niflheim and Helheim aren't really punishments. They just... are.
The sort of people likely to end up in Valhalla are professional combatants. And they end up spending the rest of eternity fighting.
The population of Folkvanger too, is largely like to be professional warriors, but the relevant point here isn't that they dedicate their life to combat, it's that they can afford to, and life in Freya's hall is akin to what a well-off Norseman would likely experience in a Jarls hall, only more.
Niflheim or Helheim are just cool and damp. Foggy. There's no mention of punishments that I've encountered in the lore (although I could be wrong. I've not done the deepest dives)
The concept of them as rewards or punishments is based on 19th Century interpretation (usually by folks who were major influences for the Nazis) of 13th Century Christian retellings of the oral history of a religion that had been suppressed since the 11th Century at the latest. (Thank you, Snorri. Also Fuck. You.)
And we know the Christian Biases crept into the best preserved of our sources, because, amongst other reasons, of the demonization of Loki in parts of Snorri's Eddas. For example his omission of positive kennings for Loki that are preserved elsewhere, as discussed by Parkhouse in a history text printed in 2021.
Anyway, I just needed to get this rant off my chest and the original post wasn't the place to do it. Tl:DR, the concept of Heaven and Hell as reward and punishment afterlife is a fairly Christian conceit and assigning it as a universal concept is reductive, insulting and just plain wrong.

rules under cut!
ONE. my portrayal is heavily adapted from viking lore , as well as major influences from the following : vikings valhalla , assassin's creed valhalla , and norse mythology . the how to train your dragon media is merely a supplement to my portrayal , so it's best to plot with me first prior to interacting so that there isn't any confusion in how i write hiccup .

FIVE. all of the psds , graphics , and carrd layouts you see on this blog have been made by me and i will not tolerate any theft . anything that is not mine will be appropriately credited .
SIX. the most important rule : don't be an asshole . any form of hate , homophobia , transphobia , ableism , racism , anti-semitism , pedophilia and more that i see present on my dash will immediately result in a block and publicly announced . there is a zero - tolerance policy on my blog for this kind of behavior . don't be gross and there won't anything to worry about :)

If I have to explain to ONE MORE supposed "heathen" that "knows more than I do on the matter" that you don't just automatically go to Valhalla, you're chosen, I'm going to flip something. Preferably the idiot who said it.
ANYWAYS.
This is basic information and found within both Eddas and the Havamal, it's not a gatekeeping effort, it's literally how it is.
Don't get me started on the whole "Viking souls (using as a blanket term) having four bits" belief. That's a post unto itself.
You're chosen.
Retrieved by Valkyrie, typically, in case of going to Valhalla. Depending on the events surrounding, you have a specific Valkyrie too. Each Valkyrie has her own task on the battlefield, as applicable.
Half of the honorable dead go to Odin to the halls of Valhalla; the others go to Freyja in Folkvangr; those who die outside of battle typically go to Hel herself but it's not like the Christian hell. Not necessarily for just dying, there's other places that people who die outside of battle can end up.
And those who commit adultery, murder, or break oaths (among other things) go to Náströnd or the Traitor's Shore. Some texts call Náströnd the Oathbreaker's Shore but I've always heard Traitor's.
This has been an abridged post. ✌️There's much more to this but I'm not in the mood for much more than a TL;DR.

There’s going to be a new Vikings series - Vikings: Valhalla (as if it didn’t already sound like a video game), and David Oakes going to be in it playing Earl Godwin - who if you didn’t know was a major english nobleman at the head of a powerful dynasty whose power rivalled the throne.

"We filmed all 3 seasons of Vikings: Valhalla during the COVID-19 pandemic; all BTS shots will illustrate this with our wonderful crew and SAs clad in masks. This greatly complicated budgetary ambitions and time constraints, and yet we made 24 episodes of high-octane period drama. None of this would have been possible without the commitment and (real-world) sacrifices of our crew - both those on the sound stages and those in the offices. Thank you. I was also fortunate to be one of my profession allowed to work during the crisis - many actors were far less lucky. And yet even the lucky ones were often torn from family members (some newly born), or forced to make hard decisions. Now concluded, it’s hard not to view VV without contemplating the real-world context of the production, and for that, it’s an especially important landmark in my career and a credit to all who worked on it. I hope to return to my “Irish Viking Family” again in the future."

Hello! I was thinking of buying the Valhalla DLC and wanted your opinion on them. I like a lot of Valhalla, but historically, a lot of Viking culture was rewritten post Christianization. Things like the norse gods being said to be an ancient long dead society who weren't really gods (to avoid any blasphemy) and generally being portrayed as more cruel, cowardly, and backstabbing,(like Havi) as well as my biggest issue, a lot less gay, all of which Valhalla kind of leans into (which is absolutely more of an issue with Assassin's Creed than with Valhalla. The vikings weren't the only culture this happened to, after all) which also kind of undercuts a lot of interesting ideas the games present when any kind of quest involving a culture's spirituality, such as the final Ivarr decision or the quest about Barnabas' daughter in Odyssey, are always undermined with thoughts like 'why does it matter, we know their beliefs aren't real in this cannon' and I was wondering if the DLC has this issue too. My biggest example of this is the interrogations you get when you kill a target. In previous AC games there's no explanation for this, but Valhalla actually semi implies that, as a reincarnation of Odin, Eivor is judging the souls of the dead like Odin did in Norse belief. But we all know that isnt the case because in AC lore Odin is an Isu, so its an interesting idea that goes no where.
So the first thing I’ll say is: I agree a lot of Viking history was written post christianization, but that’s all they had to work with, so I don’t blame them as much as the lack of resources we have. But I also wanted to add that AC is not meant to be a 100% historically accurate game. The gods are Isu, not actually Gods, and the way the Templars come to life is Alfred basically takes the Order’s mindset of “praise the ancient ones aka an ancient race they worshipped as of they were Gods” and pacified the masses through “praise the one true God.” So like, that right there is an immediate and obvious deviation …. Though not entirely, as this isn’t entirely wrong in terms of why Christianity came to be so powerful and why so many pagans converted. Yes some converted by choice and for many, it was because it was easier to rule when you an ordained king of an entire area than a Jarl/chieftain of a clan.
But anyway, I never took AC to be an exact depiction of anything, whether that be history or the Gods. That said, I wouldn’t actually argue they demonize the Gods as much as you described it. The Gods were described that way in the Eddas. And as I mentioned, yea that’s a post christianized text…. But like, it’s the most detailed and renowned we have today. So I don’t see that as a problem. And they do a much better job with their portrayal than, say, God of War. Where legitimately every God is an asshole caricature of themselves except maybe Freyja and Kratos just gets randomly inserted into their story. Baldur also is depicted like an ass and he’s not even close to that in any story about him we know of today. I, personally, really enjoy Valhalla’s depiction even though I know it’s not perfect. As far as Vikings go, sure, the cultural representation is stereotypical. We know most Scandinavians were farmers and Vikings traded, and traded widely. They didn’t just raid. But you actually see that in the DLC, Wrath of the Druids, where they set up trade posts! You may not like Wrath of the Druids because it’s a bit of “pagan scary pagan bad” but if you really follow the story closely, the Druids are persecuted despite the fanatical ones giving them a bad name. You actually realize the Christians were the assholes in the story, not just the big bad cultish pagans, and the Druids were simply being driven out instead of being allowed to just live.
But again, AC is not doing something inherently wrong with Vikings, either. They kind of did raid. They kind of did do what they did in England. And Eivor actually navigates that brilliantly. Where she goes from assuming they should just pacify England to learning to live in England, Saxon and Dane alike, because anything else ends in nothing but death. She even sees Alfred’s plight as someone trying to protect their people, even if his behavior was sketchy AF at times and he treated Pagans/Vikings horribly. It was a gray area situation.
As far as the Odin kill room thing. Darby, the narrative director, explains what Eivor is doing in the kill rooms. She is not really judging. She is struggling with her reincarnated self. Havi, in his past life, WOULD have viewed those scenarios differently. But Eivor, who developed her own personality and moral code before Havi memories started triggering in her head (which happened post trauma), is perceiving each and every kill differently because of it. The entire game is about her legacy and how she will be remembered when she dies, because she WILL die, just like Havi did, when he caused a lot of damage trying to prevent this (which, again, is not unlike the Eddas, the most detailed resource we have on stories of the Gods)… his legacy was of damage, revenge, selfishness, and yes, Glory to some extent but more in his own mind than the reality. Eivor’s legacy, as a reincarnated Isu, will be (hopefully) different because she is actively choosing, in every kill room, aka her mind, to perceive every scenario a different way and as a result, be better and do better. It’s a redemption arc, in a way. I found it much more satisfying! (More in comments)
