Why Indians are Boycotting Bollywood Films?

It is a fact that Bollywood had links with Dawood Mafia in past. Bollywood people use to entertain them and used their money to produce films. (Jab baap Dawood k saath photo khichwayega, to bacchey to Sonam Kappor jaise....jaaatu to paida honge hi).

Today the relationship cannot be seen visually, but it still there is in their art form. Actors like Aamir Khan have this tendency to fool the Indian Audience with the content of the film, he has targeted Hinduism and mocked Hindu Gods in his film PK.

But Hindus who are the most tolerant community in the world made the film a Hit, later realizing that they were fooled. They will not do it directly, but they insert their evil agenda here and there. And once caught, they later will not forget to play the Victim Card, saying sorry and all.

Kareena Khan, a Bollywood actress, even challenged the Indian Audience to not go to the theatres if they can't digest nepotism in Bollywood.

The result was seen when her film "Lal Singh Chadda" was released, people Boycotted it, and it became a disaster at the Box Office. People who even watched it didn't like it. It is the copy of a Hollywood masterpiece "The Forest Grump".

Bollywood has a history of targeting Hindus, by insulting their Gods, showing that their culture is outdated, and framing Hindus as villains in the movie, when the world knows what is the religion of terrorism. Hindus are quite tolerant in nature, and this is the reason that they are easily targeted. Hindus have a tendency to forgive and forget generally, on the other hand, Muslims can chop someone's head and be proud of it, as seen in Kanhaiyaa Laal Case and many others. Hindus are getting killed and raped in Muslim-populated nations like Pakistan and Bangladesh. But Bollywood stars never commented when Kanhaiyaa Lal's head was chopped and the psycho Muslim Killers made a video of it, but the whole Bollywood gang will come out if there happens a crime against any Muslim. They also have a soft corner for Pakistan, even though Pakistan has occupied our Kashmir and their intention is always to destroy India.

These are some basic reasons, why Indians are boycotting Bollywood films, not all films, but actors who have a history of targeting Hindus. Recent example of one such film is "Shamshera", where Sanjay Dutt is a Villain but puts a Hindu priest like Tilak on his forehead.

When people start to Boycott Trends on social media against a film, they act like beggars, telling Indian people, how much hard work they have done, so many people get employment due to them, though the reality is after a film's success, not a single penny is given to the labors, and secondly, yes they work really very very hard to put Hindus in a bad light and praise Islam whenever they get a chance.

We all know what is the relationship between terrorism and Pakistan, but we fail to understand what is the relationship between Bollywood and Pakistan. Currently, Pakistan is facing some flood issues and some Pakistanis are expecting Bollywoodians to help them financially.

Then there is also the issue of Nepotism, I am not against it completely, but people like Arjun Kapoor (a flop nepo actor), made a statement against Boycott Trends, that they have made a mistake by being silent about it and people are misusing their decency. I sometimes feel that Arjun Kapoor is living in a different world. In the MILF world.

Some Bollywood Actors are very political and quite vocal about it. they have used their platform to put their views against BJP which is a right-wing party in India. One such actress is Swara Bhaskar, as a result, she had to do some B-Grade Films now and lost all the advertisements, because people stopped watching her content.

This is the whole gang, they do drugs, molest the newcomers, spit venom against Hindus, and have a soft corner for Jihadis, all these things are resulting in the Boycott of Indian Films of such actors and the actors who are supporting them like Vijay Deverakonda, whose film Liger was also Boycotted.

Top 10 Hindi Performances of 2019

1. Manoj Pahwa - Article 15

It is simple to play the good guy. When your thoughts align with the character’s moral compass, it isn’t too difficult to step into his/her shoes. But when playing an antagonist, it is impossible to blend into the character with the same seamless effort. In Article 15, Bhramadatt Sing, played by Manoj Pahwa, is the main antagonist. Not only is he a villainous character, he is also a realistic representation of a certain section of people who exist in society, people who take advantage of caste discrimination to commit crimes. In this case, Pahwa had to understand the character without allowing his own views to dilute it. With his performance, he manages to create a sense of appalled disbelief towards his character. There is no point at which his behavior and actions do not disgust the audience. Even before the character is revealed to be the main inciter of violence, his biased actions already predispose the audience to dislike him. Sing is that character that people want to believe doesn’t exist, but is in fact present all around. And Pahwa portrays this horrifying character with full sincerity.

2. Siddhant Chaturvedi - Gully Boy

Who knew that this young boy with no claim to fame except for a supporting role in a web series would become a sudden Internet sensation? When selected for the role of MC Sher in Gully Boy, Siddhant Chaturvedi probably had no idea his character would gain a cult following, superseding the film’s popularity. But Sher isn’t typical. The hero’s friend normally isn’t recognized, constantly living in the hero’s shadow. Sher, however, doesn’t let Murad dominate any of the scenes they have together, and Siddhant Chaturvedi’s performance supports this balance. He does not let himself get overwhelmed by his co-star, Ranveer Singh’s, 8 year long experience in films. At least he doesn’t show it. Despite having no background in rap, Chaturvedi’s rapping style is filled with the passion and force of an experienced rapper. He not only perfects the lingo, he makes people believe in him as a rapper, a friend, and a mentor. Unlike the clichéd companion, threatened by his friend’s rise in popularity, Sher is Murad’s supportive backbone. The nuanced creation of this character shows Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti’s brilliance in writing. But without a talented actor, like Siddhant Chaturvedi, it would have been impossible to bring this character to life.

3. Gulshan Devaiah - Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota

While very common in the 1970s and 1980s, the double role has become a rare phenomenon in Indian cinema today. As the film industry has developed, it has become far more difficult for an actor to play two different characters in the same film convincingly. The most recent use of this concept was in Aurangzeb, with Arjun Kapoor playing twin brothers on opposite sides of the law. But this was a commercial and critical failure mainly due to Kapoor’s inability to create a distinction between the characters. Like the characters in Aurangzeb, Gulshan Devaiah’s characters in Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota are at the two opposite ends of the spectrum. Mani is Supri’s guru and Surya’s hero, while Jimmy is his disgruntled twin brother. Devaiah’s performance controlled the conflict in the film. If he wasn’t able to convince the audience of the distinction between the personalities of his two characters, and of the enmity between them, Surya and Supri’s fight would seem futile. Devaiah has both the villainous smile and the innocent eyes that bring out the contrast between the two brothers, making the conflict strong, and the film worthwhile.

4. Rasika Dugal - Hamid

In Kashmir, there are many women labeled “Half Widows” because their husbands have disappeared (many taken by the army under suspicion), and they have no information on whether these men are alive or not. Rasika Dugal plays one such woman, Ishrat, who deals with her husband’s disappearance while trying to raise her son away from the negative influences of extremist violence in Kashmir. As the only member of the cast (apart from the soldiers), that isn’t Kashmiri, Dugal had to put in twice the effort to perfect the mannerisms and diction of Kashmiri Muslims. With the fluency of her enactment, it didn’t seem at any moment as if she was acting. But getting into character is just one aspect of a good performance. It is also necessary to create an emotional connect with the audience. The topic is such that just the simple facial expression of exhaustion was enough to captivate the audience. The years and years of wait have completely drained Ishrat, and she has lost the strength to even cry. The lightness with which Dugal played this role is remarkable and befitting to a serious film like this.

5. Geetika Vidya Ohlyan and Saloni Batra - Soni

For the first time, I am clubbing two actors together in the best performance list, as neither would be complete without the other. Soni is a film that thrives on the chemistry between the two female leads, as they both deal with different levels of sexism in their daily lives as police officers. The two characters, Soni, played by Geetika Vidya Ohlyan, and Kalpana, played by Saloni Batra, are two sides of the same coin. They both have different personalities that reflect in their work. Soni’s temperamental, rebellious persona is balanced by Kalpana’s thoughtful, controlled nature. But these contrasting personalities come together in pursuit of a similar goal, to stand up for woman empowerment. As a subtle take on sexism, the film required nuanced acting to recognize the inherent sexism present in the lives of all women. Ohlyan and Batra beautifully portray the struggle of women in their professional and personal lives, further supported by their chemistry. One cannot exist without the other. Together, the two women form the crux of the film.

6. Yami Gautam - Bala

In her seven year Hindi film career, Yami Gautam hasn’t had much success. While she was delightful in her first film, Vicky Donor, her roles after that were limited. The films in which she had a lead role, such as Total Siyappa and Sanam Re, were critical and commercial failures. She spent the remainder of the time playing supporting roles in films such as Batti Gul Meter Chalu and Uri, in which there wasn’t much scope for her to showcase her talent. With the release of Bala, the expectations from Yami Gautam weren’t as high as they were from her co-stars, Ayushmann Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar, who have generated a considerable fan base with their consistent work in the past few years. But, Gautam outshone them both. Her performance as Pari Mishra, Bala’s love interest who is a model and Tik Tok star, is the highlight of the film. The film is a heartfelt, socially moving story told in a dramatic manner. Therefore it is necessary for the actors to create a balance between the two worlds: the realistic and the unrealistic. As a former Indian television actor, Yami Gautam knows exactly how to maintain this balance. Indian television is not just a platform for dramatic overacting, as many believe it to be. It’s a balance between scenes involving overdramatic tension and those with nuanced conversation. Pari’s identity as a Tik Tok star, means that her mannerisms in everyday life are much more dramatic than normal, but when everything settles down, she has the ability to have a normal conversation. Yami Gautam displayed this dichotomy with perfection. And now she has become the most appreciated aspect of the film.

7. Priyanka Chopra - The Sky is Pink

After a three-year break from acting in Hindi films, Priyanka Chopra is back with a bang. In The Sky is Pink, she plays the mother of a young girl diagnosed with a life threatening disease. Such a role is not only emotionally draining, it is also physically strenuous, as she has to step into the shoes of the real life Aditi Chaudhary. She has to be faithful to her, especially when it pertains to such a sensitive topic. Priyanka Chopra fully imbibes this role. She beautifully portrays the emotions of a distressed mother and at the same time a wife struggling to keep her marriage intact in the face of death. At first it seems difficult to imagine her as the mother of a teenage daughter, but the chemistry she shares with Zaira Wasim, playing her daughter, Aisha Chaudhary, leads to a passionate mother-daughter relationship, that completes the film.

8. Shahid Kapoor - Kabir Singh

When a film is remade, it is very difficult for the actors to live up to the expectations of the original. Shahid Kapoor steps into the shoes of Vijay Deverakonda, a Telugu superstar who delivered his career best performance in Arjun Reddy, the precursor to Kabir Singh. The passion and angst that Deverakonda brought into his performance is difficult to emulate. Which is why Kapoor doesn’t try to become Deverakonda. He does not attempt to match the original and instead brings his own flavor into the character, which sets Kabir Singh apart from Arjun Reddy. The one scene that perfectly demonstrates this is the Holi scene. In this scene, Kabir Singh is feeling a combination of emotions including anger, sadness, and passionate love, which all can be beautifully seen in his eyes. No other Hindi film actor can emote with his eyes the way Kapoor does. Even Deverakonda attempts this, but his performance in the scene in the Telugu version leans more towards anger and passion than pain. On the other hand, Kapoor portrays his character in this scene as painfully suffering bringing out another dimension in the character. This may not be the best performance that Kapoor has delivered in his career, but it definitely is his most impactful one.

9. Anjali Patil - Mere Pyaare Prime Minister

In Mere Pyaare Prime Minister, Anjali Patil plays a single mother, traumatized after being assaulted while using an outdoor bathroom. Patil has always chosen roles that lean towards the unconventional route. While she has dabbled in multiple languages, her Hindi films have not been successful, and her performances in supporting roles barely noticeable. With this film, she is finally playing a strong role in a Hindi film. Her character is one that is in mental and emotional distress after experiencing such a horrendous crime, yet cannot express it as she still has to fulfill her duty as a single mother. The restraint that Patil brings into her performance is beautiful. It is reflective of the balance between the heaviness of the storyline and the lightness of the mother-son relationship. Though this is not as powerful a role as Patil has played earlier in other language films, it is still one that requires effort, as it is not easy to play a sexual assault victim, especially when that victim is also a mother.

10. Kangana Ranaut - Judgementall Hai Kya

Kangana Ranaut is one actor that never fails to impress. With each performance, she exceeds her previous ones, making her one of the fastest growing actors in terms of talent. In Judgementall Hai Kya, she plays the feisty, socially awkward Bobby, whose mental health issues, make people disbelieve her when she claims an accident was actually a murder. The film was acclaimed for treating mental illness with sensitivity. At times in the film, the craziness of Bobby’s actions make her seem insane, which Ranaut does with perfection. But Ranaut is also able to show that the mental illness is a part of Bobby’s personality that does not make her abnormal, just different than normal.

As the title suggests this is my movie rec list.These are the films across industries and stuff i feel needs more recognition and love. It is all a mixed Bag, Mixed Genres, Mixed reasons to suggest them right from the quality to acting to cinematography to story etc.. to critical acclaim Etc you get the picture. Now not all of them are like Blockbusters or like wah wah highly acclaimed though majority are but still i feel more people need to see them so do give a try. I love these films and i am proud of them so here it goes in no particular order.

p.s These are more recent films say last 2,3 yrs and the list doesn’t include films that are still in theatre like Uyaare, super deluxe,athrian,lucifer etc

Template is as follows the Titles include links with subs. Now they are msotly links for well known streaming giants so should not be an issue with majority but i will try to find and add alternate links too. Also will be adding lil synopsis detail of film and then in italics what i thought of it and why one should watch it just random thoughts kind of thing. we will see how far this will go because i have 30 titles approx to add LOL so i will have to break this post in parts and i might get lazy and forget to add my thoughts. we will see LOL

Vikram Vedha |Tam | *R.Madhavan,Vijay Sethupathi: Police officer Vikram is on the hunt to capture Vedha, a gangster. But when Vedha voluntarily surrenders himself, it challenges Vikram's perception of good and evil. [you should watch this one for it’s smart writing, superb characterization and wonderful performances, the intrigue factor keeps you hooked till the end and Not a trace of Maddy and Vijay in the Cgaracters of vikram and vedha they are truly those characters., Also i heard this one is in the process of getting remade in bollywood so watch it before it is ruined forever. IYKWIM... i will leave it at that because this isn’t the post for details on remake hehe

Geetha Govindham|Tel| *Vijay Devrakonda, Rashmika Mandanna: (the drive link will not open in the app from phones, use a PC): A 25-year-old virgin searches for love. Super cute rom com and a feel good film. Music is really nice and basically a laugh riot or well i laughed a lot lol.

Vada Chennai |Tam| *Dhanush, Andrea Jeremiah,Aishwariya Rajesh |alt link | A proficient carrom player sets foot in the world of crime and joins forces with local gangsters to settle their feuds. However, he decides to take them down when they plan to wipe out his locality. A perfect beginning to the triology,Truly enthralling, Truly an epic Gangster drama, it is built layer by layer and sucks you into the world of anbu and company right away. Dhanush is in his best form and andrea in her grey character is also surprsingly good. this gangster drama i actually loved like anything and this genre is really not something i enjoy mostly it has to be really good for me to enjoy it

Njan Prakashan |Mal| *Fahadh Faasil,Sreenivasan |alt link| Prakashan aka PR Akash is a typical Malayali man who aspires to lead a luxurious life without too much effort. As he tries to achieve this aim, a few insignificant figures walks into his life.

holds up a mirror to Society, simple,cynical, skeptical, thoroughly entertaining and teh one that makes you smile, also Fahadh plays the role of the guy we love to hate and then love so perfectly. but hey that is hardly a surprise i mean when is he not Excellent?.

Sairat| Marathi|* Rinku Rajguru, akash Thosar: {on netflix as well} Upper class Archie falls in love with a lower caste son of a fisherman, Parshya. Watch this one for it’s realistic approach and rawness. this one deals with a wide range of themes right from class system to the struggles of a young couple when they try to settle into a daily life to more dark themes such as honor killings but an epic film. it is so hard to explain in words how good it is and why one must watch this one. Just the honesty the passion of filmmaker shines + the music. one big thing about this film was how normal looking everyone was they had realistic locations average looking cast but MAN THIS one makes you smile, laugh,cry, be sad, feel the pain like anything .the usp is the innocence of leads and the love story is so endearing Unfortunately this is also the original of dhadhak which isn’t even a speck of dust in terms of quality and basically rips everything that made sairat what it is from it and is a glossy totally non practical remake and devoid of any emotions + with terrible casting Loll. Also this is my only Marathi entry on this list.

Ente Ummante Peru |Mal| Tovino thomas,Urvashi:| Alt link The life and journey of Hameed to find his biological mother and how his life changes when Aisha comes into his life. Just Heartwarming would be my comment on it. this is again something one has to watch and experience to know why this one made it to the list. it is hilarious at times yet has some very tender moments. Tovino is a sweetheart as hameed and aisha amma is Lovesuper lovable and warm. this one just kinda engulfs you into it’s warmth.

Majili |tel| *naga chaitanya, Samantha: A former cricket player nursing his wounds of a failed relationship takes up the task of training his ex-lover's daughter and in the process discovers his feelings towards his wife and her unrequited love for him. I personally didn’t care for the first love story as it is very typical and clice But it is post the entry of sam where the film becomes worth making it to this list , simple and the one that makes you count your blessings and just be thankful to have someone who loves and supports you like sravani does for purna.. Chay and Sam’s chemistry is off he hook and they make it worth it totally.

Arjun reddy| tel| shalini, VIjay devrakonda : alt link Arjun Reddy (Vijay Deverakonda) is a Surgeon and the topper of the college. He falls in love with his junior, a Tulu girl (Shalini), who is four years younger to him. Due to some unfortunate incidents, they break up. How life takes them forward forms the rest of the story. A gamechanger in Telugu industry no wonder it has reached the cult status. it’s not like i haven’t been raving about it from past 3 days even more than before because the butchering in form of the remake hurts But wow What a revelation Mr Derakonda was in this and He rightfully won a Best actor award. Just Like sairat this one rises way above the script due to the acting of vijay and that honesty in the script and film making. idk it is hard to put in words for me but when you see these films you see how passionate the makers were while making them and the heart and soul they have put in the film just shows and touches you so hard.Now this one is 18+ so TW drugs, alcoholism and a lot on innuendos and banging hehe. BUT and i can’t emphasize enough IT IS WORTH EXPERIENCING IF YOU ARE A FILM LOVER. This is the one which leaves you in the undecided category or well it had left me in that do i love it? do i hate it? i was so confused until my rewatch and i have finally came to conclusion that i love it. this is like you can love me hate me but you can’t ignore me and it stays on your mind a lot longer then the 3 hrs runtime after you are done because you are in that wait what is my actual verdict hehe. Also i haven;t seen a more accurate depiction of a toxic relationship on desi screen where one is so obsessed and self centered that it becomes really hard to survive around him

Thadam|tam| Arun vijay The murder of a youngster creates confusion among a few cops when they find out that the one accused in the crime has a look-alike!. Thadam has an intriguingly written flow of events that begin from the pre-interval point and the film maintains the suspense factor till the end. The lead actor is fab in his dual role it is hard to tell which one is which and who has actually done the crime but mind you int he beginning it is a little confusing as it keeps goign back and forth between the bg stories of 2 guys but the viewer isn’t told that it is actually dual role so i was like wait how come one min he is rich and in love with oen persona and next he is in slums doing thefts lol. anyway...

Peranbu\Tam/Mal |*Mamooty A story about a father who tries to understand the struggles of his disabled daughter Paapa. The plot highlights the journey of how he becomes a better man while he comes to terms with his child and her special needs. This one is Just purely about a father’s love for the child and how far a father can go for his child.

An Honorable mention to BAAHUBALI2 which requires no intro or anything from me to persuade one into watching it It is SELF EXPLANATORY.

Phew OK i am calling it a day..... Part 2 will be posted soon... I am more then excited to hear from you guys and your thoughts on these films plz do tag me if you post your reviews and your thoughts. i worked really hard on this so i will be more than excited to know if it was worth or no... I have so much more quality content in the queue and am super excited to share that with ya fellas..... it gives me great Joy to share the love for movies and a lot of satisfaction that all this FIlm nerd thing is coming to some use to others and i take a lot of pride in the fact that i am kind of is a film nerd hehe. Arjun Reddy

I just watched Arjun Reddy and I am pretty conflicted. It’s crude but it has this rawness to it which is quite appealing. Comes of as really sexist sometimes but then sometimes it’s just the opposite. The FL has very less screen space and way less dialogues. But she had a pretty good screen presence. And honestly i loved the fact that she looks pretty normal.

Initially though, it honestly seemed as if she didn’t really have any choice about getting into relationship with Arjun. But then sometime later she comes off to be just equally mad about him as he is about her. The physical intimacy is pretty real too! Not overly flowery, not crude neither very artistically shot. Just very real.

Vijay Deverakonda is a man candy in both his looks 😍 definitely enjoyed ogling watching him. 3 hours was a bit of a stretch though. I FFed quite a few times!!

I don’t understand the concept of love at first sight and definitely don’t like post breakup destructive behavior. But somehow this movie kept me hooked!! Maybe a one time watch!

Liger: Vijay Deverakonda Says 'Mike Tyson Abused Me A Lot, Albeit Lovingly’ On The Sets

Vijay Deverakonda's sports drama Liger released in theatres yesterday on the 25th of August. As the movie buffs give their verdict on Puri Jagannadh's directorial, let us see what Vijay has to say about working with legendary boxer Mike Tyson. Talking about the action entertainer to IANS, the Arjun Reddy star revealed, "He abused me a lot, albeit lovingly, in English, and I can't even repeat what he said to me. But yes, I had a good time with him."

Vijay Deverakonda further informed that Mike Tyson likes Indian food and music, however, is not too fond of the crowds here. He was quoted saying, “He loves India a lot for its food, music, and people. In fact, he used to ask us to bring Indian food for him which he enjoyed a lot. But yes, he is scared of the crowd here."

If reports are to be believed, the Liger makers have already closed a deal with an OTT platform for streaming rights of the movie. Reports suggest that the streaming giants have paid a whopping amount for the rights; however, the exact amount has not been disclosed. The OTT premiere date for Liger has also not been revealed yet.

While Vijay Deverakonda plays an MMA artist with a stammering issue in the project, Ananya Panday is seen as his love interest. Apart from these two, the venture has Ramya Krishnan as the protagonist's mother and Ronit Roy as his coach. In addition to this, Vishu Reddy, Ali, Makarand Deshpande, and Getup Srinu also have prominent roles in the film.

Top 10 Hindi Films of 2019

1. Gully Boy

India’s official entry for the 2020 Oscars, and the best Hindi film of the year, is the rap spectacle, Gully Boy. Loosely based off of the lives of two young rappers in Mumbai, this film is the story of Murad, a Muslim man living in the slums, who realizes his dream of becoming a rapper, as he deals with a dysfunctional family and a varied set of friends. As a story of a man’s rise to fame, this film takes the clichéd route. Yet, director Zoya Akhtar manages to set this clichéd story in a beautifully crafted world of its own. From the characters to the situational conflicts, everything is written with such complexity that makes the audience invested in this world. A musically-driven film, with intriguing story progressions, Gully Boy is one of the finest films to come out of Indian cinema in the past few years.

2. Section 375

“Justice is abstract. Law is a fact.” At the beginning of the film, lawyer Tarun Saluja says this line to aspiring law students, as he expresses his own sentiments of siding with what can be factually proven. Section 375 is a film that treads this blurred line as it follows a court case of a woman who accuses her boss, a famous film director, of raping her. As the audience, it is difficult to determine who is telling the truth till the very end, revealing the ambiguity of such cases, and whether justice is truly possible in such intimate and personal affairs. There is no over the top screaming in the court, or unnecessary preaching to further the point, as is usual in Indian court dramas. Instead, the case is meticulously described, going into laws and facts that most people who have never stepped in a court are not familiar with. The reality and truth are so conflicted throughout the film, that by the end, the audience is equally as confused as the characters, which is the intended outcome of this film.

3. Soni

It’s difficult to make a film on women empowerment without getting too preachy or exaggerating the female characters. But this film does just that. It follows two female police officers as they navigate the male-dominated profession, while also combatting with subtle patriarchal sentiments in their homes. In such, they become less a commanding officer and her mentee, and more comrades, who understand each other’s struggles as women in a male-dominated world. The film doesn’t overload with the feminism. Instead the focus is on the emotional development of the women as the audience is made to feel the subtle patriarchy they face on a daily basis. For women, this film is a reflection of their life on screen, and for men, it is an insight into the privilege they have in even small things in life.

4. Article 15

Caste is a topic rarely discussed in Hindi cinema. While quite popular in the South, in Tamil and Telugu films, caste discrimination is not as prevalent an issue in Hindi films. Therefore, a film like Article 15 comes as a hopeful light in the dark reality of Indian society. It is a fresh take on this age old practice. Ayushmann Khurrana leads the way in this Anubhav Sinha thriller, as a Brahmin police officer, Ayan, investigating the murder of two Dalit girls in the small village where he is newly posted. As a man who has been shielded from the caste divides due to his upbringing in a progressive Indian city, Ayan was shocked by the extent to which people would go. The film doesn’t shy away from the discomforting realities and gives importance to the Dalit voice, whether it is police officers working under Ayan or the families of the girls who are desperate for justice. Article 15 is striking and relevant, especially in Indian society today, where caste discrimination is prevalent in all sectors, yet rarely discussed in any form of media.

5. Uri

Despite all reports of the film being jingoistic, Uri is one of the most well-written, immaculately choreographed, and thrilling army films in India. It expressed patriotism in just the right measures. Based on the true story of the surgical strikes in retaliation to the 2016 Uri attack, this film follows Major Vihaan Singh Shergill, the leader of the mission, as he avenges the death of his comrades, one of whom was his brother-in-law. From the details of the planning to the emotional characterizations of the people in the film, it delivers. Though there are some moments where the film takes advantage of typical clichés, the remainder of the film is a stylistic, well-researched entertainer.

6. Mere Pyaare Prime Minister

Putting a child at the center of a serious and important story, requires awareness and sensitivity. In this film about a single mother who is assaulted at night when she goes out to openly defecate, director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra uses the emotional vulnerability of her son to highlight the issue of necessary bathrooms in slums. Despite not understanding what exactly happened to his mother, he is able to feel the emotional change within her after that incident and resolves to make her happy again by tackling the issue at hand. The simplicity with which the story is told reflects the young boy’s point of view. In this way, the film becomes a hopeful version of what could have been a hard-hitting drama and thus relays an important message to people of all ages.

7. Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota

Superhero and vigilante films are at a minimum in Hindi cinema. Preceded by films such as Bhavesh Joshi, Krrish, and Mr. India, this Deadpool-inspired action comedy brings a new flavor into the Indian version of this genre. Surya is born with a rare disorder, making him immune to the feeling of pain. While this may seem like the perfect origin of a superhero, it ends up being very dangerous, as his inability to distinguish when he has been gravely hurt can lead to a fatal end. Therefore, he is kept in deep observation, and trained by his grandfather to take care of himself. Later on, he teams up with his childhood friend, Supri, and his childhood hero, Karate Mani, to defeat Mani’s evil twin, Jimmy. Filled with some great action sequences and hilarious dialogues, this film fits all the bills for a perfect origin story.

8. Hamid

A young boy, Hamid, desperate to find his missing father, places a phone call to God, thus beginning an intimate relationship with an unknown voice over the phone, who happens to be an Indian soldier, Abhay. Based off of a play, this heartwarming tale emphasizes the importance of human relationships in the face of religion, divisiveness, animosity, and violence. In the reality of war-torn Kashmir, Hamid and Abhay are on opposite sides of the conflict. The former is a Muslim whose father has been taken, possibly killed by soldiers on suspicion, and the latter a soldier who is responsible for finding Muslim militants that have caused harm to his comrades. Yet, on the phone, ignorant to each other’s true identity, they form a bond of suffering. Both of them have been worn down by the system and are searching for a form of respite.

9. Bala

Ayushmann Khurrana has become known for choosing films with unique concepts told in a traditional manner. In Bala, he plays a man suffering from premature balding. The film traces this flawed character’s journey as he goes from a weak-natured, hypocrite to a strong, self-confident man. It isn’t just the storyline that makes this film interesting, it is also the treatment of the characters as they interact with one another, in problematic situations. The film does not bank upon the romance, and gives enough credence to the coming of age of the man as he understands life. The bond he shares with the different people in his life, from his family members, to the love of his life, to his childhood friend/enemy and all their advice, whether good or bad, ultimately shape is journey as he comes to terms with the state of baldness.

10. Kabir Singh

A remake of the Telugu superhit film, Arjun Reddy, this passionate romantic drama, offers an alternative spin on the classic story of Devdas. Kabir is an aggressive, entitled youngster whose self-destructive nature leads to his downfall. But it’s only when he loses everything, his glimmer of hope returns. When compared to its original, Kabir Singh doesn’t reach the same level of passion. The chemistry that Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey share is far stronger than that of Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani. Yet, the film still manages to deliver an engaging well-written narrative with extreme emotions propagated by unique characters. Kabir Singh is not a path-breaking film conceptually, but its ability to keep the audience engaged through a two and a half hour typical love story is an achievement in screenwriting and direction.
