you seem to hold Fullmetal Alchemist in very high regard. whats your thoughts on it, and if youve seen both the original anime and read the manga whats your thoughts on each iteration?

My path of discovery is that I started with the Brotherhood anime, then watched the original anime, and then collected the complete manga via the omnibus editions. FMA has the distinction of being one of two manga series I own (aside from sampler volumes I get at conventions), the other being the Legend of Zelda stuff.

Basically, I think the manga and Brotherhood are one of the most thematically consistent stories I’ve ever encountered, and that’s on top of it being a sprawling epic and also one of the tightest and most intricate thrillers I’ve encountered. Basically, it’s hard for me to talk about this series without using “most” and “-est” a lot. Yes, the story has flaws -- everything does -- but it’s still something I regard with outright awe at how well it works.

I don’t have a preference between Brotherhood and the manga. The manga is the expanded version, but thanks to my fast reading pace, I can blow through the whole series in a short amount of time whenever I want to relive it. Brotherhood had to make compromises both due to the original anime adapting some stuff, and also having to excise some stuff for pacing, but I think it does a mostly good job and I love the production value. I even own it on Blu-Ray. I just don’t often have the time to do a rewatch, and I don’t think I could just pick out an episode here and there to watch. It’s one big epic to me.

I also really like the dub, and it’s too bad Vic Mignogna is scum. I haven’t tried rewatching the series since I found out about him, but I hope I’ll be able to ignore that. Vic never working another day in his life in the anime industry will probably help.

The first anime... tried. I admit that I’m probably biased because of seeing Brotherhood first and how much I admire it, but I think the material original to the first anime is far weaker, and it goes more and more off the rails as the series goes on. Plotlines are continued, yes, but it drops some of the themes established by the early episodes, and the cast shrinks to the point where the big final battle for the fate of multiple nations is a messy brawl in a basement. (And what was with (SPOILERS) throwing the baby around?) The movie finale was just outright written poorly, in my opinion. I don’t know where the whole idea of (SPOILERS) the parallel worlds thing came from, but it almost feels like an escape hatch that the creative team tried to use to indulge their true interests.

For fun, I’ll go through my favorite characters: Al (so pure! as the kids say), Winry (I’m obligated to like all dedicated engineers), Mei Chan (she kicks butt and her romantic infatuation with Al is funny), Roy Mustang (I’m of the opinion that the story implies he’s not a womanizer, that’s a cover he uses for his operations), Hawkeye (the coolest), Scar (such a great complex character), Kimblee (I love to hate this jerk, and his story had a nice finish), Greed 1/2 (I love practical baddies), General Olivier Mira Armstrong, and of course her brother MAJOR ALEX LOUIS ARMSTRONG!! I’m probably also forgetting my love for a few, because this cast is seriously huge.

Asking Permission

Victor hadn’t had family until Raven. After everything that happened to him he had stopped talking to his dad because his dad (who had never really been a dad) now saw him as the ultimate pet project. Victor didn’t like being a freak, but being a lab freak was enough to have him leaving for San Francisco. Then Dick had come along with that little green dude and he had friends, Star had crash landed here and he had a true foreign friend. But Dick, Gar, and Kori, they were all just friends.

Raven, Raven was family.

She had become his family from the moment she’d helped him get his car back, have that car destroyed, and then rebuild it. Raven was his kid sister, he had beaten up Garfield (his best friend, by the way), for breaking her heart when he’d broken up with her to date Rose Wilson. He’d scared the crap out of Dick and Tim when they had both looked her way. And he’d endured her dating phase with minimal hassle because no guy ever got past the first date because they were dumb and blind.

He had supported Raven when she had all but adopted the wayward Bat like he was a stray puppy, and Victor had even come to like Jason Todd. Jason was a good thing for Rae, he dragged her out of her reclusive shell and made her smile. Victor couldn’t hate the guy for that.

At least he didn’t hate the guy until now as he stared at the tall young man standing at his door at eight in the morning looking nervous. He’d been pissed about last week when on the final, epic final game of the Cubs vs Indians and the Cubs won when Jason had kissed Raven full on the mouth as they all shouted in celebration. Until then, Jason and Raven had just been friends, and good friends, but friends all the same, then the kiss had happened and Victor was still tempted to kill him.

“Either you’re after something or you surrender so I can kill you for kissing my little sister!” Victor growled. Jason had been evading him for about a week since the kiss.

“I come in peace,” Jason held up his hands then. “Can I come in?”

Victor thought it over.

“Only if you cook,” Victor decided.

“Sure,” Jason nodded as he let the tall young man in.

“So what do you want before I kill you after breakfast,” Victor demanded.

“I came to ask permission to date your sister,” Jason said as he pulled things out of the fridge. Victor stood there dumbfounded as he openly gaped at Jason.

“You…You WHAT!?”

“Yeah, shock to me too, but I’d like to date Raven and I’d really like to not die doing it,” Jason stated as he pulled out cooking materials. Victor collapsed on his bar stools (custom made to hold his metal weight).

“You want to date Raven?” Victor clarified.

“Yeah,” Jason nodded as he started making something.

“Alright, why? And don’t give me the reasons Gar gave me!” Victor snapped. He did not want to hear another thing about how his little sister had great legs, and hips.

“She’s smart, she’s my best friend, and I don’t know, it just… it seems right,” Jason said uncertainly. Victor decided to cut him some slack since Jason wasn’t one for words unless he was being a smart ass. “I don’t know, Vic, I… she makes everything normal!”

“She’s good at that,” Victor admitted. Raven had done that for Jason, she had worked hard at it for the first year of knowing him until they decided they were best friends earlier this year. “But why her? You had Kara.”

“Kara, one, perky, two, moral high ground, and three, while it was fun, holy shit was she nuts!” Jason sighed. “I mean seriously! She ratted me out to Bats, she lit my shit on fire, and she stuck her nose in my business. Raven’s… Raven’s better, I’m not saying I’ll make her happy all the time but Vic, I’d really like to try.”

Victor mulled this over as he closely watched Jason cooking in his Boston apartment. He wasn’t going to say yes, not just yet.

“And the kiss?” Victor brought up darkly.

“I told her I’d kiss her if the Cubs won the World Series, they did, and I told her that back in September,” Jason said. Victor blinked.

“Really?”

“Yeah, it wasn’t to get in her pants, or to do whatever it is you think I was going to do, and it wasn’t really a real kiss as there was nothing more than hard lip smacking,” Jason defended.

Internally Victor was laughing his ass off at this information, externally he revealed nothing.

“There’ll be rules,” he grounded out.

“What?”

“Rule one, you break her heart I break you; painfully, I may like you but I love her. Rule two, you will not do funny business with me around past hand holding or I will neuter you! Rule three, you will treat my sister like a Queen, if this is all a joke on her I will end you if she doesn’t first. And Rule four, no seducing her!” Victor snapped. He had no say about Rule four, however, he wanted it known he didn’t want Raven hurt in any way from this.

“So, just to be clear, I can date her?” Jason asked uncertainly.

“Yeah, sure, break her I break you though, also you didn’t mention a single think about how she looks so you aren’t here for superficial reasons,” Victor shrugged.

“Well, she is hot, but I don’t think you, as her big brother want to hear that,” Jason shrugged.

“You’re right, I don’t,” Victor spat.

“Then you don’t have to worry about me saying it,” Jason shrugged.

“How serious about this are you?” Victor asked.

“I don’t know… but I really want it,” Jason said softly.

“Fine, but I’m serious about breaking you if you break her.”

“I’ll hand you the bat,” Jason offered.

“See, and this is why I like you,” Victor smiled.

“Haha, don’t tell her I was here,” Jason said.

“Why? She’d just laugh at the thought of a guy asking to date her?” Victor muttered. Raven’s dating life… it wasn’t a good one. Her experiences sucked and he’d beaten up a few more assholes than normal because her dating life was terrible. He’d also punched Dick for setting her up with the prep school asshole.

“I felt it best to ask permission as I see you as a friend too and she’s my best friend,” Jason said evenly.

“Thanks. Just don’t break her.”

Hip Hop journalist, and now rising MC, Rob Markman has released a visual treatment to “Believe Me” which followed up to the letter to his teenage self that he posted via Instagram. A HHNH premiere, Rob shares with them the inspiration behind the song, working with his son, and future plans.

"So at the end of the year I decided to write my 15-year-old self a letter and post it on Instagram. When I did that, I knew I wanted to write a song with that same inspiration. That’s how “Believe Me” was born. It’s really a dope exercise for anyone; with all that you’ve learned in life what would you tell your 15-year-old self?”

With his son playing his younger self, watch above as Rob Markman brings the letter to life and just let it inspire your soul.

This past week marked the anniversary of Notorious B.I.G’s death (March 9th). As we spent the day reminiscing and blasting his classics, New York rapper Stro dropped a freestyle over Biggie’s “Steal & Rob.” As his style is often compared to that of the ‘90s MCs, the freestyle is a perfect tribute. Watch as Stro pays his respect.

At the end of his last album, Everybody, it was implied that Logic would be releasing one more album and it would be his last. He went on to confirm the implication was true. Well, now it looks like he’s giving closure to his older projects before he makes his big exit. Last year, Logic did promise he would be releasing a follow up to his 2016 Bobby Tarantino. Coming in at 13-tracks strong, Bobby Tarantino II features the likes of 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Wiz Khalifa, Young Sinatra - pick your poison above.

March starting to look a lot like February with these releases now, sheesh. DJ Premier and Royce 5’9” - that’s PRhyme to you - deliver PRHYME 2 a week early. While it’s not exactly released, NPR has released the album to be streamed in its entirety. It will still be released to everywhere on March 16th. Serving as their collaborative debut album, the 15-track album features the likes of Big K.R.I.T., Chavis Chandler, 2 Chainz, Dave East and plenty more. Listen to it via NPR.

Arin Ray dropped Platinum Fire this week. Serving as his debut album, the Cincinnati singer first came on the scene back in 2012 on The X-Factor which led him to work with big names like Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj, John Legend and more. The 14-track album features the likes of Ty Dolla $ign, DRAM, SiR, Terrace Martin, and Childish Major. Definitely worth a listen, so pick your poison: Apple, TIDAL, Spotify, SoundCloud.

Killy makes his debut with Surrender Your Soul. The 11-track tape has production from the likes of 1mind, Y2K, and Wondagurl, the Toronto rapper has a unique energy to which he puts his all into his new project. Surrender Your Soul premiered on The FADER, and can be streamed via Apple, Spotify, and SoundCloud.

Page Kennedy delivered Straight Bars 2, as a follow up to his Straight Bars he dropped in August. Kennedy drops some serious heat over instrumentals from Jay-Z, Kanye, The Lox, Mobb Deep and plenty more. Take a listen via SoundCloud.

YFN Lucci dropped Ray Ray From Summerhill. Extensive yet a great listen, the 20-track features the likes of Meek Mill, Dreezy, T.I. and more. It’s a raw project that gives you an inside glimpse into YFN Lucci’s world. Pick your poison: Apple, TIDAL or Spotify.

Don Mykel released his 5-track EP 2ERO PATI3NCE. The Harlem rapper has been quiet since his last EP drop in September, but now he’s back. Recruiting production from the Dunk Rock, Mike Kuz, the 25th Hour, and Scott Farlee, stream 2ERO PATI3NCE via Apple Music.

Toronto singer Anders released his sophomore project, Twos, this week. The tape followed that of his 669 debut he dropped last year. The 8-track EP features production from the likes of LUCA (who’s a regular collaborator), FrancisGotHeat, Business Boi, and many more. Take a listen via SoundCloud.

Keri Wilson has announced that she is gearing up to make a comeback in eight years. She teamed up with IfOnly to launch an auction that will allow fans to bid on a chance to get a tour of her studio and listen to her untitled third studio album. Starting off at $2500, the money will be going towards the Keri Hilson Foundation that benefits women and children through education, arts, health and fitness.

Drake announced during a Toronto Raptors versus Houston Rockets game that he is working on a new album for Toronto: “I love each and every one of you, I’m happy to be home. I’m working on this new album for the city.” Since last year, he concluded his More Life with “I’ll be back 2018 to give you the summary.” Looks like he’s a man of his word. We shall see.

MED and Guilty Simpson have teamed up on a new collab project, Loyalty. Set to release March 16th, scroll up to hear the project’s first single. Coming in at 10 tracks, and only two features from Blu and J. Mitchell, pre-order Loyalty via iTunes.

After releasing the first visual offering (above) from his upcoming debut, Khary is gearing up for his new and first album, Captain, which is set to release April 6th.

With the recent reveal of the official tracklist for Rich The Kid’s upcoming The World Is Yours. With features from Kendrick Lamar, Lil Wayne, Khalid, Rick Ross, Bryson Tiller, and more, Rick followed up to say that the tracklist was incomplete and it was missing features from Kanye West, Frank Ocean and Migos. The World Is Yours is set to release March 23rd.

Back in August, SZA hinted that there existed a deluxe edition of her debut Ctrl. Now she has confirmed via Twitter that there are actually six bonus tracks that could be added to make this deluxe edition.

The OG legends, Eric B and Rakim, are planning to be in a city near you! What started off as a simply tweet, “it’s time to show you,” they have announced that they will be going on tour. Kicking off in Boston on April 8th, Eric B and Rakim will close out their 18-date tour in San Francisco on May 3rd. Check the tour dates here and stay plugged for more updates. 

While we’re on the old school tip, let’s talk about Q-Tip! The Tribe member has now been appointed lead advisor of the John F. Kennedy Center’s Hip Hop Culture Council, to which he says “reflects the creative, social, and intellectual wealth of the Hip Hop community.”

“The members are the embodiment of what we stand for and all that we aspire to achieve with the Hip Hop Culture program” - Q-Tip 

The council members include legendary Hip Hop contributors like Questlove, Common, Grant Hill, LL Cool J, Bobbito Garcia, Black Thought, 9th Wonder, and several more. In honor of Phife Dawg, the Billionaire Boys Club teamed up with A Tribe Called Quest and Sony Music to create a special collected called The Space Program capsule. The collaborative capsule will include a collection of products and accessories from shirts, hats, hoodies, and more. Also going in is a hoodie with the words “FOR MALIK” in honor of Phife. The Space Program capsule collection drops this Tuesday (March 13th) at the BBC flagship store, webstore and Tribe’s website as well.

Genius has began a new weekly talk show, For The Record, that’s hosted by Rob Markman. First up, Genius has Lil Yatchy over to discuss his latest release, Lil Boat 2, and more. Check it out. 

Only six weeks after releasing their sophomore album, Migos have officially earned their second Platinum record. What took Culture five months, Culture II has now gone platinum in less than six weeks with its single “Stir Fry” as the NBA All Star Weekend��s official song.

Post Malone has earned himself a huge feat as well. His “Psycho” single, featuring Ty Dolla $ign, debuted No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100. 

The 2018 iHeartRadio Music Awards took place last night and many great things happened. From Eminem and Kehlani performing together, to Cardi announcing her debut album will finally be arriving in April (let’s hope), to Chance The Rapper being honored with the Innovator Award.
