The Goetic Spirits

The 72 Spirits of the Goetia, with their titles, seals, and legions, taken from the Lesser Key of Solomon, who bound and rules these Spirits.

These Spirits can be seen as 'stepped down' versions of the 7 Planetary Gods (see "777" for how the correspondences branch out from here).

The Gods they descend from are given on either side of their title. The symbols are the planet associated with a given number e.g. Mars (♂︎) for 5, Venus (♀︎) for 7 etc.

Numbers larger than 9 are reduced (compressed) by adding their digits together. So for Earl Ipos, the 22nd Spirit: 22 -> 2 + 2 = 4 = ♃ = Jupiter.

The symbol on the left of the title is the God derived from the Spirit's number.

The symbol on the right is derived from converting each letter in the name to a number: Ipos -> 8 + 15 + 14 + 18 = 55 -> 5 + 5 = 10 -> 1 + 0 = 1 = ☿ = Mercury.

The real gender of some Spirits is also here revealed e.g. Duchess Astaroth, Queen Paimon, the Marquise Phoenix, Countess Maltas etc.

Taking inspiration from afrobeat father Fela Kuti as well as artists including Ebo Taylor, Parliament, Funkadelic and Havana d’Primera, London Afrobeat Collective’s music and multi-lingual performances in English, Spanish, Lingala, and French have won them admirers across the UK and Europe. On the 14th February, they are set to release their new album ‘Esengo’ via Canopy Records. This eight-strong multi-cultural collective from England, Italy, France, Congo, Argentina, and New Zealand, combine traditional afrobeat and hi life with funk, jazz, Latin, and dub to deliver party music born of their truly global DNA. With recent knock out performances stretching from opening the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival (Scotland) to Bardentreffen (Germany), Tempo Latino (France), Couleur Café (Brussels), Cully Jazz (Switzerland), Earth Garden (Malta), Kala (Albania), Jazz in the Park (Romania) and many more venues across Europe, the band have also been busy in the studio, working on their fourth studio album. Liam Gallagher has announced a four-day festival in Malta for later this year – you can find all the details below.

The former Oasis frontman is due to host his own European getaway, ‘Liam Gallagher & Friends: Malta Weekender’, between September 19 and September 22, 2024. He’ll deliver a headline performance, and will be joined by a self-curated line-up of artists and DJs.

Additionally, the upcoming event is set to host club nights, pool parties and boat parties at the location over the “four days and four nights”.

Gallagher will perform his bill-topping show on a “purpose-built live concert area in Ta’ Qali”, which will stage “two days and nights of incredible live music”.

Other participating venues include UNO Malta (the country’s largest open-air venue) and the Cafe Del Mar & Terrace (an “incredible beach club with amazing panoramic views of the Mediterranean”). No other names have been confirmed currently. You can find more information here.

A GREY BORING JUMPER AND AN OVER COMPLICATED TOP exhibition, by myself and Steffi Klenz has now travelled to the 2023 Tokyo Biennale in the form of the Japanese, Oshibori .

In this new iteration, our exchange during Covid, output including just the punctuation has been embroidered onto the white canvas of the Oshibori and served in Tokyo restaurants. Customers visiting the venues will enjoy chance encounters with this small artwork. Since the Oshibori are reusable items people encounter this work repeatedly throughout the exhibition period. A group exhibition concludes this experiment, bringing together all 15 participants and their Oshibori artworks.

Birmingham 1998 - The stage and set design

Wow. Just wow. The Point Theatre was dark, enclosed and resembled the late lamented Industrial Zone on the Crystal Maze. In contrast, the BBC have gone to town with the light bulbs.

In layout, the stage most resembles that used in Millstreet in 1993 or Wembley in 1977. Big, open and surprisingly huge with the orchestra tucked slightly behind and to the side in a highly bespoke orchestra pit. Yes, there is still an orchestra.

There are so many cameras. Audience cameras, crane cameras, standard fixed cameras, shoulder-mounted mobile cameras that the director can send into the orchestra pit to film the percussionist wrestle with his huge cymbals while the drummer smirks.

There's some latitude with what the delegations can do on stage. Malta have brought massive wrought-iron candlesticks with actual candles for instance.

There's dry ice available. I haven't checked in detail, but I think this may be a first for any Eurovision. Several of the acts make use of it to create a light and mystical fog around their ankles.

The postcards are fantastic, combining the best of contemporary UK pop (finally Britpop on Eurovision!) along with the standard tourism scenes. There's a delightful guessing game how the national flags will be revealed as part of the scene, sometimes in surprising ways. They're some of the most fun postcards that have been created since they started in 1970.

Then there's this. The most shocking sight of the evening. Product placement on the BBC, even if the scoreboard can do maps and animated little stars with each of the countries' points, this was a flabbergasting sight in the UK. The scoreboard is situated up high, on the gantry that Guido Horn scaled successfully during his performance.

Behind the stage, there's a custom built green room to allow the artists to relax and watch the contest on big screens, with a huge central bar.

One less obvious innovation was that the BBC consulted with fan groups and gave them tickets to the front rows to ensure that the cameras could see the fans get excited and wave flags. The National Indoor Arena is one of the biggest venues for Eurovision yet. There's an electric atmosphere only heightened by the edgy humour, the risk of televoting catastrophe, and the tense finish to the voting with the home singer involved until the final votes.

It's a high wire act that comes off - even if the winner was somewhat late for her trophy.

The designer was Andrew Howe-Davies. It's as if he and the BBC have gone back to look at the last five years worth of Eurovision and nicked all the bits that worked.

Switzerland I THOUGHT THEIR NAME WAS RAINBOW WITH THE PRONUNCIATION SOUNDS THAT WAY?? Right?? I didn't question it until they shared the spelling. Sweet song. Song about people not wanting to be sent to war, which is sadly happening again during this time as we know all too well with us hosting instead of Ukraine 🇺🇦 🩷

Israel, good song called Unicorn. The lyrics are so true, with the use of Hebrew too is is nice.

Moldova mooonsss starrsss cool dancing oh my, this dude loves his wife, he's a goof egg. What a banger. The hairstyles, kinda reminded me of scorpion tails even though I figured they were representing 🌙. The looked awesome standing together and mirror sync dancing.

Focusing on people using rainbow 🌈 hand held fans! Yusss 🏳️‍🌈

The tirquoise carpet was fierce, everyone's style was outstanding.

Sweden, reminded me of ABBA especially the beginning. Awesome!

Czech Republic very much enjoyed and a strong and beautiful performance, keep your hands to yourself reminder! And very empowering. Their hair!! Wow!

Netherlands they're so gorgeous and what a performance that shows such a connection. The pinstripe suit inspired outfits, I need. I love their gender.

Finland, once sold his moustache. Got to be done, brought a potable sauna to the venue as well. Sassy punk pole dancers, everyone else on the stage on giant dog leads. His dance moves are unmatched, the human centipede situation was and elbow jig leave them 10/10.

2010 Ukrainian representative, Alyosha telling her story of having to leave Ukraine and her husband in a heartfelt story. Beautiful and very sad stage performance and special effects, met with Rebecca Ferguson, X Factor 2010, I remember that when she was on!

"Where is my friend when I need toy the most?"

The heartbeat of all the countries flags uniting and the hole in the heart got filled with the heart made by the flags and bursting with light out of her chest. Very tear jerking and amazing performance.

Mes parents y sont déjà, mais moi, je ne sais pas si j’ai envie d’y aller. Je ne connais qu’un seul pays, Le Togo, je ne connais qu’un seul continent, L’Afrique. Je suis bien ici. Là-bas, il n’y a pas grand-mère et les cousins-cousines, les oncles et tantes, il n’y a pas mon école et le grand marché, il n’y a pas le soleil ardent qui colore la peau et l’ombre des manguiers pour se reposer. Là-bas il n’y a pas le fufu que l’on pilonne à bout de bras dans le mortier, les brochettes pimentées qui piquent la langue et réchauffent le ventre affamé, il n’y a pas tout ça, là-bas. Cet endroit ne m’attend pas et je ne l’attends pas non plus. Alors je ferais mieux de rester ici, dans mon pays, pauvre oui, mais riche de tous les rires.

On m’a dit que là-bas, ce sera vraiment mieux qu’ici. Vraiment ? On m’a dit que là-bas j’irai dans de bonnes écoles où l’on m’apprendra à bien penser et à bien dire. Vraiment ? Dehors, c’est Lomé. La ville et son fracas. C’est la boulangère ambulante qui fait sa tournée dès l’aube et dont le cri se rapproche lentement : « Petit pain, 500 francs, gros pain, 1 000 francs. Ma chérie, je te fais un prix, pour toi, gros pain, 800 francs. » Dehors, c’est le coq qui libère son plus beau cocorico pour annoncer la naissance du jour, qu’il fête chaque fois avec l’euphorie d’un premier matin. C’est les poules et les chèvres qui vous accompagnent pour un bout de chemin avant de s’arrêter pour brouter de l’herbe sèche sur le sol. Dehors, c’est la vendeuse de mandarine, qui s’appelle Clémentine, qui vous salue en levant la main, vous demande si vous allez venir à la messe le lendemain et qui rappelle avec entrain que « Il faut s’en remettre à Dieu. Dieu est grand ma soeur, et il peut tout ». Dehors, c’est les taxis-motos qui se bousculent pour prendre des voyageurs et qui ne manquent pas de vous bousculer au passage. Dehors, c’est Dodo, le patron du maquis qui ouvre son établissement Jésus sauve, où l’on se retrouvera avec les copains et les copines le soir venu pour rigoler et papoter autour d’une bouteille de Pompon ou de Malta. Dehors, c’est le vendeur de yaourt glacé qui fait résonner le bruit inimitable de son klaxon pour signaler que sa glacière est pleine. Dehors, c’est Félicie la coiffeuse qui vous demande de passer la voir bientôt parce que ça fait longtemps qu’elle ne vous a pas tressé. Dehors, c’est le brouhaha des moteurs, l’odeur féroce des pots d’échappement, les mots-colères des automobilistes. C’est la terre argileuse d’un chemin qui n’est pas une route mais un parcours vertigineux semé d’embûches rocailleuses et boueuses. C’est un peuple de déchets qui jonchent les pieds. Ce sont des rues sans nom qui défilent, des maisons sans numéro, des murs qui disent Il est interdit d’uriner et sur lesquels les gens urinent quand même. Les enfants courent. Les jeunes discutent. Les vieux sont assis et observent le silence. Est-ce que là-bas, ces gens que je ne connais pas savent observer le silence ? Il faudrait qu’ils apprennent à observer le silence. Alors, peut-être, je pourrai entrevoir la musique d’une grande espérance, le rythme enjoué d’un bonheur loin de chez moi.
