Goalies are just a couple of guys who don't mind getting a hard piece of rubber shot at them at a very high speed, and they deserve all the love we give them.
What more could we ask of them?
So much love we show them
So silly

fading perfection
4.6k words
genre: angst, fluff
featuring: jack eichel x female reader
warnings: fighting/arguing, jack may or may not punch a wall
note: this is for the jack girlie’s, aka me and @icebound-imagination, and anyone else who wants to come to the jack side 🫶🏼 - i also didn’t proof read much so i apologize for any errors anywhere
Watching the time tick down you were growing less and less hopeful that the cup would be won tonight. The dreaded fear of it all coming down to a game seven becoming more and more of a reality as the game seemed to be going in anything but Vegas’ favor.
You knew that Jack was frustrated, not just from the body language he was showing on the ice but because you knew him like the back of your hand. Having been together so long, you’d learned what made him tick. His anger bound to get the best of him in a situation like this, and you just prayed he’d pull it together for the sake of the team. The game still in reach as the Knights were only down one goal, with ten minutes on the clock being plenty of time for a miracle comeback.
Things had grown chippy as both sides were going to fight until the final whistle. Scrums ensuing after each play was blown dead, the coaches urging both of their teams to hold their composure. Not needing any penalties this late in the game.
You watched Jack from half covered eyes, not wanting to watch but unable to look away. Fixated on him as he skated up and down the ice, a battle in the corner with him and Stoney taking precious time off the clock. Fans banging on the glass urging the Knights to win the battle and get the puck to the net. Sneaky cross checks and punches being thrown out of view from the refs, Jack throwing his weight around to do anything he could to dig the puck free. His face showing how frustrated he was with the other team being able to hold the puck for so long without a whistle.
As the whistle finally blew Stoney and Jack began spitting their criticisms at the refs while Brandon Carlo stepped in to trash talk Stoney. The two of them getting into each other's faces as the Bruins defenseman gave him a cheap shot, Stoney immediately toppling over and grabbing at his forearm.
The fans booing and yelling that no penalty was called, your eyes flashing to Jack as you saw him immediately going after Carlo. He grabbed his stick without a second thought, making contact with Carlo’s chest in the form of cross check as he fell over Stoney who was still dealing with his own injury.
The refs stepped in to pull Jack away before a scrum ensued, the Bruins coming to the aid of their defenseman who remained down on the ice.
You watched as Jack was escorted off the ice versus to the box, shaking your head as you knew he had been ejected. The game was surely out of reach now as the Bruins were going to the power play for nearly the remainder of the game.
Less than a minute into the power play David Pasternak scored an empty net goal, putting the Bruins up by two. Burying your face in your hands you hoped it would make it all go away, but as you looked up to the clock you watched as the Bruins scored yet another goal on the empty net.
The fans seated around you booing, not just at the team but also at you. Jack’s name and number plastered proudly on your jacket not keeping it a secret that he was your boyfriend. And despite him often being a hero to this fan base, tonight he was surely enemy number one. His actions having cost the Knights a shot at a possible comeback. While you’d come to experience plenty of trash talk from fans over the years between Vegas and Buffalo, these comments were brutal. Simply doing your best to tune them out as you begged the clock to tick down faster.
The final horn a blessing as you darted from your seat, hurrying through the angered crowd to make your way to the family waiting area down by the locker rooms.
As you waited with the other WAGS, they could see how the game and the fans had affected you. Tears in your eyes as you knew that Jack would surely blame himself for the loss, which he surely could. His emotions got the best of him and who knows how things would’ve ended up if he could’ve just kept a level head.
The idea of Jack winning the Stanley Cup was something you’d hoped and prayed for since he’d gotten out of Buffalo. The last few seasons being some of the hardest years of his career and life. You’d seen him go through several ups, with equal if not more downs. None of it being easy. To see him getting hate. To see him be talked about negatively in the public eye. Hearing the comments that were being made constantly when a young athlete failed to meet the sky high expectations set out for him. With just as hard as things were on him, you felt it all just as much. Though never once leaving his side to take it on alone.
And to go through it again, the comments and negativity from the fans. It was difficult to simply brush it off when you know Jack is much better than the person he showed on the ice in that split second rage of anger.
He’d finally emerged from the locker room, making eye contact with you but not saying a word. No hug or holding your hand on the walk to the car, the silent treatment something you were unfortunately not unfamiliar with.
The drive home was quiet. The only sound filling the void being the run of the engine. You wished Jack would say something. Anything. Just to pretend that things were normal for five minutes before you’d have to wake up and live in reality.
The Knights had lost. The dreaded game seven that you’d hoped wouldn’t be needed is in a few days. And right now you weren’t even sure you’d get two words out of your boyfriend before then.
Pulling into the driveway you grabbed your key from your bag as you didn’t care to wait for Jack to take his sweet time unlocking the door. Needing to get inside and just feel at home, even if the house would feel empty with Jack most likely choosing to be alone with his thoughts.
You watched from behind the kitchen island as he immediately went to turn on the tv, highlights from their game being displayed. Though for the Knights they were more like lowlights.
“Can you talk to me?”
His eyes remained glued to the tv, not even looking at you when you spoke. A sigh leaving your lips as you didn’t feel like dealing with him when he was acting like this. Though it was never intentional for him to take out his frustrations on you, it still hurt when he did.
“Jack!”
“What?”
His voice echoed throughout the house as he shouted back at you, making you jump at the anger behind such a simple word.
“Will you talk to me? Please?”
“About what? I’m sorry that I’m a little preoccupied with the possibility that the league is gonna suspend me for game seven, so I don’t have time for whatever type of emotional talk you want to have right now.”
He shook his head as he tossed the remote on the table as he shut off the tv. No use in watching the recap of the game and seeing his dumb antics on replay as they discussed his possible suspension.
You were sure he’d be fine, guys did worse all the time and got away with it. But that mentality didn’t matter to Jack, as all he could think about was being the reason his team lost their shot at the cup.
“That’s how you’re going to talk to me, and treat me, after I have been by your side through everything? When you were in Buffalo and everyone was against you, I was the only one in your corner. I never once let you believe anything negative that was being said in the media. Or when you had to fight like hell just to try and get the surgery you wanted. I went with you to every meeting, every doctor’s appointment, I even spoke to the Sabres organization on your behalf to fight for you to get the surgery you wanted. I never once made you do any of that alone and now you’re going to shut me out because you chose to be an idiot on the ice tonight?”
“I didn’t force you to do any of that.”
Jack spat back at you, his voice low and almost mocking as he stood at the other side of the island. His expression was cold as he stared at you.
“You’re right, you didn’t. I did it all because I love you. I sat in that arena in Buffalo and had hateful things said to me night in and night out because I was your girlfriend and I supported you, even on your worst days. I packed up and moved to Vegas with you because I wanted to continue my life with you. So many things I’ve chosen to give up or push to the side, but I’d do it all over again and again because I fucking love you. And what type of thanks do I get? Being ignored by you simply because you couldn’t control your fucking anger on the ice.”
He smirked as he shook his head, surprised to hear you calling him out on his behavior as it normally wouldn’t be your choice to do so.
“You think I need this shit right now? The last thing I need is my girlfriend bashing me for how I acted out there. I didn’t ask for this tonight y/n!”
“Then you should’ve kept a level head on the ice Jack! I didn’t ask for half the shit that’s come to me simply for loving you and supporting you every night you step on the ice. But I accept it. And if you get suspended, then you’ll have to accept that too. But it’s not fucking fair to take your frustrations you have with yourself out on me when I’ve done nothing to deserve that.”
The two of you had closed the distance between you, Jack biting his cheek as you unloaded on him. All of your frustrations and feelings building up over the years as you’d taken on so much to be by his side. And despite seeing how hurt you were, it’s like you were talking to a wall.
“Then leave. If this is too much for you, and it’s not what you signed up for, then fucking leave. Everything isn’t going to be sunshine and rainbows all the time. This is my life, my career we are talking about. We had a chance at the cup tonight y/n and we lost. For two seconds can you realize why I’m so angry? If I can’t play next game then what? I will never be able to live down being suspended from game 7 and watching my team lose.”
Your eyes went wide as you listened to him, laughing at his words as in true Jack fashion, he was making it about himself. Not taking the time to hear you out or understand how much you willingly sacrificed to be in his corner. Not because you felt like you had to, or you were forced to, but because you loved Jack and to you it was worth the hardships.
“Leave? Don’t you realize if I didn’t want this I would’ve fucking left back in Buffalo? I wouldn’t have been trashed online relentlessly for being with you when you ended up being ‘overrated and overpaid’ and a disappointment to an organization Jack. Don’t you fucking get that? All you care about is yourself, what about how I fucking feel? Stop being selfish long enough to see how much I’m hurting!”
“Shut the fuck up!”
His voice rang in your ears as you flinched, his fist punching through the wall next to you as you stood speechless. Despite arguments being a somewhat normal thing for the two of you, he’d never once gotten physical.
Looking at the wall you immediately were afraid he’d broken his hand, the worry of him being suspended no longer an issue if he couldn’t play because of an injury.
His breathing was heavy as he looked from the wall to his hand, as if shocked at himself that he’d gotten to that point.
“Fuck!”
Shaking his hand he left the kitchen, retreating to the bedroom and slamming the door. A few muffled expletives poured from his lips as he likely was beating himself up for being so stupid.
You hadn’t noticed you were crying until the tears began to fall, hitting the skin on the back of your hand as you moved to see the damage. Tracing the hole that his fist had left, thankfully realizing he’d only punched the drywall and it likely hadn’t hurt him too bad. You shook your head, grabbing your keys as you headed out. Not knowing where you were going, but you knew you couldn’t stay there.
-
Jack woke up to an empty bed next to him, immediately concerned where you were. The throbbing of his hand reminded him of last night’s events, making him assume you had slept on the couch.
“Babe?”
He slowly walked into the room, only to see you weren’t there. Trying to recall if you’d mentioned leaving the night before, scanning the kitchen for a possible note from you. His eyes noticed the hole his fist had left, mentally cursing himself for letting his anger push him to that point.
The idea of you thinking he’d ever lay a hand on you was one he hoped didn’t cross your mind. Jack’s intentions never to hit you, he’d just wanted the fighting to stop. Not able to control his anger as it was instinct to hit something. He wondered if you’d cried when he left the room, if you were now scared of him. The last thing he wanted was to have pushed you to the point that you left.
Checking the time he realized he was running late, needing to be at the airport to catch the flight to Boston in less than an hour. He packed his suit, threw whatever clothes he could find in his duffle bag, and headed out the door.
-
“Eichs, what the hell dude?”
The boys gave him shit for being late to the plane, Jack not paying any mind as he took his seat and pulled out his phone. Checking to see if you’d responded to any of his texts, all of them unread as he switched his phone to airplane mode. Tossing his head back as he could only hope that by the time the plane landed you’d finally respond to him.
-
Jack sat in his hotel room, the conversation with you open on his phone as he kept checking to see if you’d as much as read his texts.
Nothing.
A knock soon came at his door, finally making him look away from his phone for the first time in hours. Noah Hanifin revealed to be behind it as he invited himself in, taking a seat on the bed not occupied by Jack.
“What the fuck is going dude? You’ve been quiet since you were late to the plane, your hand is fucked up and it definitely didn’t look like that after the game. Everyone is worried about you.”
Jack laid back on the bed, hands covering his face as he groaned. Replaying last night’s events over and over in his mind, trying to imagine what this present moment would be like had he not been so stupid. Had he not let his anger get the best of him.
“I fucked up Hanny. Bad. And I’m scared I won’t be able to fix it.”
Noah didn’t pry, letting Jack take his time as he could see that whatever was on his mind wasn’t something easy for him to talk about.
“Y/n and I, we got into it last night. I was being an asshole and she just, all she wanted was to get me to understand her. To know the sacrifices she’d made being with me, not by force but out of love. But, I wouldn’t listen, and I made it all about me. She called me selfish, and I got angry. So I punched the wall. I swear I never meant to do anything like that, and thank god my dumbass didn’t hit her. I’d never be able to live with myself if I would’ve been that stupid.”
“Well, you are kind of selfish Jack, if I’m honest.”
Jack shot Noah a look of confusion and frustration, though he should have expected Noah to call him on his bullshit. He was never the type to sugar coat things with Jack, and having known about the things you went through being Jack’s girlfriend, he felt it only right that he defended you.
“Jack, I don’t think you truly realize how fucking amazing y/n is. Being your girlfriend isn’t a walk in the park. This life is not easy on any pro-athletes significant other. The situation in Buffalo was one of the hardest things you’ve gone through, and she never once made you deal with any of that alone. None of the negativity being anything she signed up for willingly. But she deals with all of it, the good and the bad, because she fucking loves you dude. She rarely complains about it because what’s complaining going to do? Add to your stress or your frustrations? Of course she never wants to do that. But, you did act like an idiot last night. And I’m sure you were an asshole to her, but she doesn’t ever deserve that. She goes to bat for you, and I’m sure for once all she’d like is for you to stand in her corner for a change.”
Jack sniffled as he felt himself getting emotional at the thought of not having the chance to stand in your corner, to finally be there for you like you’d been needing.
“And trust me, if you would’ve hit her, I’d be in here beating the shit out of you right now. That’s not who you are Jack, and you need to make things right.”
Noah gave Jack a hug, reassuring him that things would work themselves out. Though itmay not be today or tomorrow like Jack would prefer. Real relationships take work, and that’s all he could vow to do. Work on himself so he can be better, for you, and for each other.
“She won’t even text me back Hanny, not sure how I’m supposed to work things out.”
“Jack, you punched a hole in the wall. I’m sure she needs a little bit more time to deal with that. I promise, you’ll have the chance to make things right. Just, put the phone down and get some rest please? We’ve got a big game tomorrow.”
-
The morning had come and gone, Jack still not as much as getting you to read his texts. He was starting to worry that he’d gone too far this time. That you’d finally stopped putting up with the difficulties of being with him, that he was too late at being able to fix things.
As he sat in his stall of the locker room, head in his hands as he tried his best to focus, all he could think about was you. How badly he wanted you to be in the crowd cheering him on. The way you always wore his name and number proud, wanting everyone to know you were his girl. He thought about how amazing the moment would be to share with you if they pulled off a win tonight.
But it had been two days, and not a single response from you had come. Jack knew he’d gone too far, punching the wall never something he could’ve imagined doing. And you had every right to be angry with him for acting the way he did. Though he’d hoped that maybe you would put all those emotions aside to be there for him tonight. Of course afterwards you’d have to discuss what happened, but he needed you now more than ever. With one of the biggest games of his career just an hour away, he wasn’t sure he’d be able to get his mind right.
He tried one last time to call you, hoping that you’d finally pick up so he could hear your voice. Tell you how sorry he was, how much he loved you. Apologize for not realizing how truly lucky he was to have you by his side.
“Hello?”
Your voice was soft on the other end, Jack almost too stunned to say anything. But he knew he wouldn’t have long, the boys already getting lined up for warmups in the hall.
“Hi, baby. Look, I don’t have much time but I’m so fucking sorry. For everything. You’re right, I was being selfish and I was wrong. I truly never meant to get angry like that, and I hate myself for putting you through that. I love you so much and appreciate you sticking by my side, even though I’m sure there were days you didn’t want to deal with the bullshit. You stayed, and I need to appreciate you more because, I can’t lose you.”
You could hear the emotion in his voice, your heart hurting imagining him getting teary eyed in the locker room for his teammates to see. Though Jack didn’t care, he needed this moment with you. His voice was desperate with the need to make it known how sorry he was.
“I know. But right now, you need to focus on going out there and winning the cup okay? Everything will be fine.”
Jack laughed, trying to pull himself together as he wiped the tears from his face, nodding his head as he promised.
“Okay, I gotta go, warmups. I love you.”
-
You’d gotten to the WAGS suite just as the lights began to dim, signaling that the starting lineups were about to be announced.
“Y/n? Oh my god! We didn’t think you were coming!”
Mark Stone’s wife Hayley running up to hug you, the other girls’ following suit. All of them happy to know you’d decided to come after the other night’s events making you question the idea.
“There was no way I could miss this, and I know Jack wants me here.”
Though you didn’t tell him you’d made the trip, wanting to keep it a surprise. Which would be even sweeter should the Knights pull off the win.
Taking your seat next to Hayley, the two of you grabbed hands as you took a deep breath impatiently awaiting puck drop.
-
With the final minutes ticking down on the clock, you and the other WAGS sprinted down to the Zamboni gates. Arena staff directing you there for easy access to the ice post-game.
You watched with tear filled eyes as the scoreboard read three goals to one, with Vegas being the team with the lead. All of you joined hands as sixty seconds turned to forty, then twenty, and soon the final horn sounded. Jumping up and down you all cheered, watching as equipment flew through the air as the bench cleared and the guys piled onto their goaltender.
The Zamboni doors opened, but you were instructed to wait until the team was given the cup to take the ice. Arena staff needed to lay out carpets as a safety precaution in the meantime.
“And now, your Stanley Cup Champions. The Las Vegas Golden Knights!”
You and the girls crowded the entrance to the ice, phones out to take photos and pictures as each guy awaited their moment raising the cup. Soon enough it was Jack’s turn, and you could feel your eyes welling with tears at the sight. Seeing the emotion written all over his face, it made everything worth it. The hateful comments from the media and fans, navigating a trade out of a difficult situation with his previous organization. Fighting so hard for the surgery he deserved and worked endlessly to research.
The ups and the down of being his girlfriend all evened out for this opportunity to see him hoist the cup. And while it didn’t erase the argument you’d had, or the fact that he’d punched the wall, it was a testament to the fact that the two of you could overcome it all.
As he passed the cup off to Noah, you watched as he scanned the crowd. His smile faded as he realized that all his teammates had their significant others to celebrate with, but little did he know you were there, and had been all night cheering him on.
And just as he was set to head off to rejoin his teammates, or find a coach to thank, he saw you. Your WAGS jacket always the easiest to spot since you went a little crazy with the gold glitter. Carefully you stepped onto the ice as he skated towards you, tears in his eyes as he pulled you into his chest. His arms not letting you go even for a second as he spun you around. Finally setting you down to pull your lips to his, his hands cupping your face as he pulled away, resting his forehead on yours.
“I’m so proud of you Jack!”
Smiling up at him as you wiped his tears, he kissed your forehead. Wrapping his arms around you again he held you tight, surely never letting you out of his sight for more than a day ever again.
“Thank you so much, for everything. For loving me, supporting me, for being my rock. For coming here and supporting me after I was a selfish asshole, and punched a fucking hole in the wall of our kitchen.”
He laughed embarrassed as you grabbed his hand, looking over the few cuts that remained.
“Yeah, how's the hand doing?”
“Feels fucking amazing lifting that cup. And even better getting to hold you again.”
He kissed you once again as you smiled, hands playing with his curls as the two of you let the chaos of celebration continue around you.
“We can deal with the hole in the wall when we get back home. Right now, this is about you. All the bullshit you’ve gone through the last few years, the bashing from the media, everyone doubting you. This is your moment. And I’m so fucking proud of you, and proud to be your girlfriend. This right here makes it all worth it, to see you come out on top.”
“No baby, this is about us. This cup is just as much for you as it is me. Without you, I wouldn’t be here. And believe me, I realize that now. Having not heard from you for two days, Hanny setting me straight, I realize now how much you mean to me. And I meant what I said earlier, I can’t lose you.”
“You’re not going to lose me Jack, I promise.”
Pulling his lips back to yours, you gave him a kiss. Savoring the moment as you knew just how special this was. Watching as his teammates chugged beers, wrapped each other in hugs, and took photos with their families.
“Now, we can finish this conversation later, but you just won the Stanley Cup babe! Let’s celebrate!”

52. “i want this to be real, not fake anymore” with Brendan brisson ☺️
“fake dating”
brendan brisson x f!reader
not proof read!!
wc: 1.0k
you and brendan met a little less than a year ago when he moved to vegas for hockey. you guys live in the same apartment complex, so it all started with the casual ‘morning!’ and ‘has the mailman come yet?’ type of greetings. thankfully, you both grew close over the first two months of brendan being in vegas, and now you two are closer than ever.
it’s strictly platonic though. especially since you see how many girls brendan invites over after going out clubbing. but it doesn’t bother you since you’re basically doing the same with other guys, but you can’t from having slight feelings for him. he’s exactly your type, he has brown fluffy hair, a nice build, he’s taller than you, a sweet smile, he’s funny, and the list goes on.
one day as brendan is sitting on your couch, watching a basketball game on television with you, he says something that catches you off guard.
“i need you to pretend to be my girlfriend,” he blurts out, making your eyes go wide.
“excuse me what?” you say, almost choking on air.
“i accidentally told my mom i have a girlfriend since she was pestering me, and my parents are coming to town next weekend for the game. so can you just pretend to be my girlfriend? i mean they already have an idea of who you are, so it wouldn’t be suspicious. all you need to do is sit with them at the game in my jersey, and have dinner with them for the couple of days that they’re in town,” brendan grins, trying to convince you to say yes.
“that’s all i have to do?”
“well, there is one more thing,” he says bashfully
“and that is…?”
“you need to spend the night at my apartment, for two nights in a row,” he chuckles awkwardly, afraid of what you’ll say.
“brendan brisson! i am not sharing a bed with you!” you exclaim
“cmon please! i’ll pay you if you really want me to. i just need my mom to hop off my ass about getting a girlfriend!” he pleads.
“fine, i’ll do it. you owe me fifty.”
“deal, thank you so much y/n!” he says, as he sits up off of the couch to hug you, but you shrug him off jokingly.
—
the weekend you’ve been dreading is finally here. you’re currently sat right by the ice next to brendan’s parents, in the brisson jersey you purchased in the gift shop only three days before this.
“go brendan honey!” his mom yells as he’s skating down the ice. he almost makes it in, but the shot gets blocked by calgary’s goalie. at first you don’t really care to yell out to brendan, but you realize it looks bad as his “girlfriend,” so you begin to do it despite the awkwardness you feel. but as soon as brendan is on the breakaway, skating closer and closer to the goal, the words “go bren, you got this babe!” flow smoothly out of your mouth like it’s something you’ve said a million times before.
as the little black puck goes straight into the goal, you immediately shoot out of your seat and start cheering as loud as possible. his mother turns to you with a big smile on her face, both of you incredibly proud of brendan. brendan is slammed into the glass by his teammates as a congratulations, coincidentally right in front of you and his parents. he turns around to face you guys, and gives you an extra big smile, and a look of ‘thank you for doing this.’
—
later that night you all go out for drinks and food. you and brendan are squished in the booth next to each other, sat across from his parents who are now asking you a multitude of personal questions.
“so, how did you and brendan meet again?” his father asks. all of these questions are slightly sticking up your anxiety, and brendan notices. out of the corner of his eyes he sees you picking at your fingers and bouncing your knee, so he gently takes your right hand in his left one, and places your guys’ entangled hands on your thigh.
the comfort of brendan touching you soothes your worries, and you’re able to answer the question with ease. “we met in the apartment complex! i live a few doors down from him, so we sort of saw each other a lot. one thing lead to another, and now we’re here!” you smile, looking over at brendan who’s already looking at you.
“aww that’s too cute! reminds me of us, and how we met!” his mom says, turning to her husband.
once you all finish dinner and drinks, you head back to brendan’s apartment. there’s the final period of one last game on television, so him and his father are watching that intently as you get to know his mother better. you’re tucked under brendan’s arm, sharing a blanket with him. before you even realize it, you’re dozing off. you’re awoken as brendan is placing you gently on his bed, pulling the covers above your body.
“mm, brendan thank you,” you groggily mumble out.
“of course y/n, goodnight,” he says as he turns off the bedroom light.
“where are you going?” you ask
“oh i’m gonna sleep on the floor”
“what?” you say, immediately sitting up to see that he’s made himself a little bed on the floor. you gasp at the sight, “are you crazy?! get into the bed! it’s cold, and this is your bed brendan!” you whisper yell at him, making him chuckle. he crawls into bed next to you, and you snuggle into the warmth radiating off of his bare body, but still being careful not to touch him.
“hey y/n?” he mutters, staring at the ceiling.
“yeah?” you say softly, turning on your other side to face him.
“i want this to be real, not fake anymore. i hate having to pretend when i know that i wish it wasn’t fake. i’ve wanted to ask you out for awhile now, but i never had the courage,” he admits, making your heart flutter.
“really? like this isn’t some sick joke?”
“yeah, why would it be a joke?”
“i don’t know brendan, but i feel the same way,” you admit shyly
“really? you do?” he asks softly, as he turns his head to look down at you.
“yup,” you smile, as brendan does the same. he pulls your closer into his body and gently kisses your lips. you’re both very tired, but still manage to enjoy the sweet and intimate moment. you both close your eyes to rest for the night, embracing each others warmth.

nineteen
(Gif credit to @fivehole)
word count: 5,152
warnings: none
genres: strangers to lovers to ex’s, a bit sad, somewhat happy ending
A/N: To start, I know that Nolan’s not as popular anymore and his future in the NHL is looking a bit bleak but despite that, this story exists. This story is based off of the songs, the Hayley Williams cover of Nineteen by Tegan and Sara, (which is where the title comes from), You All Over Me by Taylor Swift feat Maren Morris and Last Kiss by Taylor Swift (I highly recommend listening to those songs before reading. I’m taking vibes, elements and references from them and putting them in the story and listening will also help with understanding the plot). I’ve wanted to write a fic based off of those songs for a while and my vision for the story works best with Nolan. It’s set in a timeline format by the hockey season. It’s written with a female reader in mind because I’m a female of color but the reader doesn’t specifically have to be a POC or a woman and there’s no dialogue. As always, I’m open to any and all feedback, comments or questions; just put them in my inbox or dm me. Thank you so much in advance for reading, I appreciate it😌
(P.S. I have other stories (linked here) that I have written for other players as well if you want to check it out)
“You were mine, always but now you’re gone. Look what we’ve become, just another sad song of a love gone wrong.” -Pictures by Judah and the Lion feat. Kacey Musgraves
2017-18
Nolan could feel you in his limbs before he ever met you and he could feel you in his life before he ever thought to. How can you feel someone that you don’t even know yet? On the day you met, Nolan felt an unexplained tingle in his body. He was dreading having to go to the DMV but he misplaced his license so on a rare weekday off, he went to get a replacement license. Nolan really needed his license; he legally couldn’t drive without it. He could only imagine the chaos that would ensue if the recently 2nd overall NHL draft pick was pulled over and caught driving without his license so he couldn’t put off getting it done. To top it off, Nolan felt this weird tingling sensation in his body so he mentally made a note to talk about it with the team doctor. Travis (TK) kindly dropped Nolan off at the DMV and continued with his other plans for the off day. For you, you had some time after your classes to pop into the DMV to renew your license, which was going to expire soon because your birthday was coming up.
That tingling feeling that Nolan was experiencing went away when you first interacted with each other in that crowded waiting room back in 2018, in the middle of his first season with the Flyers. The softness in your voice asking if the seat next to him was taken directly contrasted with the deepness of Nolan’s voice. It was going to be a long wait so to pass the time, you and Nolan started talking to each other. Nolan usually was against unnecessary small talk and preferred to keep to himself but chatting with you felt different. Throughout these conversations, you learned little details about each other; details that would be held onto throughout the course of your relationship. You learned that Nolan was actually a funny guy behind his intimidating demeanor and he learned that you deeply valued family. The connection that you had made in the hours of waiting felt special to Nolan. You didn’t even know each other for that long and that well but it was almost like you could feel each other in your hearts as you talked. Since Nolan had arrived before you did, his number was called sooner so he left first. Before leaving, he quickly wrote his number down on the back of the waiting room ticket.
Later that same day, you sent Nolan a text to check in on him and that started a long text chain between the two of you. In the beginning of your friendship, Nolan definitely had his walls up but as you got to know more about each other, the walls came down. Nolan enjoyed talking to you because you made him feel like a regular person, not some superstar; the pressure of being a high NHL draft pick disappeared in the chats that you shared. Over time, he became more comfortable and trusting with you, even inviting you to his games and team events and telling his teammates about you. You began falling for each other and your relationship grew from texting buddies to friends to lovers. Your relationship with Nolan was quiet but it worked well that way. There was a slow introduction to the most important people in your lives; you’ll never forget how your father complimented Nolan’s handshake and how that handshake indicated to him that Nolan was a strong man and your mother admired how Nolan treated you so well. Nolan didn’t want outsiders to judge and ridicule his relationship with you so there were no direct social media posts of your presence in each other’s lives –only small snippets of his face or hands in your Instagram story posts, listening to songs that you liked or that reminded him of you on his story posts and location tags of being at the same place– but the right people knew you were together. There were also fun things, like surprise flowers and other gifts at your door, inside jokes, and secret road trips down to the beaches on the Jersey Shore. You were down so bad for Nolan and he could make you melt like ice cream on a hot June day with just one look. Nolan was down badly too; he tried to be all cool and push it aside but as soon as you walked into the room or opened his car door, the heat in his cheeks would rise and it was game over. The first year of your relationship together was so amazing until things changed.
————————————————————
2018-19
Due to your summer internship commitments, you only got to spend 2 weeks in Winnipeg with Nolan before school started back up at the end of August. Nolan was anxious about you coming to his safe space of his hometown; it rained the day you arrived and the smell of rain brought comfort to him. As both a test and a joke, you ran towards your boyfriend in the airport to see how he would respond. Nolan saw you running at him and his first reaction was to open his arms to catch you; having you in his arms meant everything to him.
Nolan isn’t a man of many words but being with you made him want to sing. On your first night in Winnipeg, Nolan took you to a bonfire party to meet some of his friends. At the party, you mixed and mingled with the people who Nolan trusted the most. Nolan even pulled you in for a dance, which surprised you because he knew that you weren’t much of a dancer and also that he would bust out a move in front of so many people. After the party flamed out, you and Nolan drove back to his house and by the time you arrived, it was almost 2 am. Before going inside, Nolan had looked at you with those blue eyes of his that you adored and you could sense that he was nervous; something was up. Nolan took a deep breath and told you that he loved you for the first time in that same deep voice that captivated you when you first met and you repeated it back to him. You always knew in your heart that you loved Nolan but hearing him say it meant so much more.
Summer Nolan was much more laid back and chill than Hockey Season Nolan. During your time in his hometown, Nolan showed you around the place that shaped him into who he was and let you meet the people who impacted him along the way; he even drove you all the way out to Brandon to see his old stomping grounds before he was drafted. It wouldn’t be summer unless he also took you fishing, hunting, and out for a day on the golf course as well. You got along well with Nolan’s family and meshed great with them. By the time you left to return to Philly, Nolan was already looking forward to bringing you back home to Winnipeg for many summers to come.
After you had left, Nolan was doing some summer training and unexpectedly started experiencing some migraines; he had experienced injuries and concussions before but this wasn’t like that. Due to Nolan’s career choice as a hockey player, he had access to the best doctors and specialists in the country so that helped relieve some of the stress that came with having a chronic illness. His migraines came with good and bad days and one of those bad days came as a test when you were together.
The first time you had ever spent the night at Nolan’s place in Philadelphia, he had a random migraine. Thankfully, it wasn’t so bad that he would miss time from playing; Nolan was still trying to navigate his newfound diagnosis but he handled it the best way that he could. At the time, he was living with Kevin (you were taking things slow and hadn’t talked about moving in together yet) so you weren’t originally planning on staying overnight but Nolan really needed you there. You weren’t trained like a doctor or nurse to take care of him but you did everything in your power to make him feel as comfortable as possible and to help to alleviate his pain. The only thing that helped Nolan was laying down in the dark with no light and you cautiously lay beside him in the darkness of his bedroom. Whenever you were sick as a child, one of your parents would come into your room to make sure you were breathing okay on your own and you did the same for Nolan. You watched him as he slept and could feel him breathe. That evening was a bit rough but Nolan was so grateful that you sacrificed your time to be with him during an unexpected, difficult situation. Like anything else in life, there would always be ups and downs but you would always be there to take care of him, no matter what.
————————————————————
2019-20 and 2020-21
Nolan continued to miss time away from the team and he did his best to try to get healthy enough to return to play but it took more time than expected. Patience would end up becoming an important, key virtue throughout your relationship. During this time, you graduated early from the University of Pennsylvania with a Bachelor’s in Public Health and Nolan was super proud of you, beaming with joy from watching his lover achieve such a great accomplishment. You decided to take a year off from school before going back to get your Master’s degree in Epidemiology but then in early 2020, a pandemic hit; suddenly, you were hunkering down in Canada with Nolan and his family, your hope-to-someday-be in-laws. The world that you all knew was changing dramatically. The NHL season paused for a bit and started back up in a bubble-style tournament but due to his extended absence and health concerns, the Flyers and Nolan’s doctors felt like it was best for him to continue his recovery instead of having him come down to play in Toronto and Edmonton. You could sense the hurt from Nolan having to watch his team play in the playoffs without him and you felt that same pain, both sharing the hope for things to get better.
After the Flyers season concluded in late 2020, Nolan’s health had stabilized by then and he felt confident about returning to play so the Flyers gave him a contract for the shortened 2020-21 season. That condensed season was a bit brutal on Nolan since he hadn’t played professionally in over a year and the team wasn’t in the best condition at the time but he tried his best to persevere through it. He had a minor setback when Phillippe Myers accidentally hit him with a puck mid-game but thankfully, Nolan only missed 2 games and finished out the season without another injury. You saw a light in Nolan’s eyes when he played; a light that both shined and dimmed as time would go on.
The Flyers missed the 2021 playoffs and Nolan was so appreciative for the time off to recover but he also felt fearful for what was to come for the future. Nolan wanted to escape the criticism and pressure from being in Philly so during the 2021 off-season, he talked to you about his plans for leaving. He thought your input was super important and you were supportive of whatever he chose to do and were open to moving wherever he ended up.
The trade to Vegas was a bit surprising because there was no solid guarantee of where he was going to play but you were both grateful for the chance that the team took on Nolan and to open to this new chapter. It wasn’t easy leaving everything you knew behind in Philly but there was something exciting waiting for the both of you in the desert. You originally wanted to finish grad school in Philly but took a pause on your studies to move with Nolan to Vegas; this was also going to be the first time you had lived together. Living in Vegas had its expected highs and lows but you both made the best of the new city. You still kept in contact with some of the Flyers WAGs and made new friends with Golden Knights ladies, discovered new things to love about each other and the new place you lived. Yes, there still were some setbacks with Nolan’s health and his play needed some adjusting but it was okay because he was glad to be back on the ice and starting over somewhere new. Things were looking fine for both of you until February 16, 2022.
————————————————————
2021-22
You had a rare weekday off so you trekked down to T-Mobile Arena to go watch Nolan play. That game happened to be against the Colorado Avalanche; conference rivalry games always had some sort of chaos and drama but this time, that drama and chaos hit too close to home. As you sat in the stands, chatting away with the other WAGs, something devastating happened. Early in the first period, Nolan got hit. The hit was brutal to watch and you angrily cursed Nathan MacKinnon’s name for what he did to your man. You had always known that hockey was aggressive and physical but this hit ignited both a rage and sadness within you. During the game, you left to meet with the team doctor to discuss Nolan’s prognosis; it was a head injury so you knew what was coming ahead and you had to drive him home. You always liked when Nolan let you drive his car but this time it was different. The car ride back home was very quiet, the only noise was the sound of the other cars around you and the clicks of the turn signal. Every time you saw Nolan hurting, it made your heart break a little. You loved him so much that seeing him in pain made you feel pain and you wished that you could just erase the pain that Nolan dealt with and make him 100% better.
Nolan eventually did return to play before getting hurt again and playing his last game on March 24. After his final game, there was a shift in Nolan and the light in his eyes disappeared. His migraines continued to be on and off but the time away allowed them to stabilize for a bit. During his hiatus from hockey, Nolan became more distant and less affectionate with you. You tried to let his actions not bother you but it silently hurt you. You knew Nolan was upset with the way how his hockey season ended and you tried to comfort him and distract him from his pain but it wasn’t enough for him; it was terrifying to watch him fade away like that. Nolan was hurting a lot, not only physically but emotionally. He couldn’t quite fully escape the injuries and the lingering pressure of returning to hockey was always there. Everything in his life was centered around hockey; his identity, his goals, and the conversations people had about and with him. It was almost like he resented the sport that he was the most grateful for; hockey was the only thing people seemed to know him for and that was gone. The loss of Nolan’s hockey career would be a very challenging loss that he would grieve over but you were right there by his side to support him during this difficult time.
Throughout his recovery time, Nolan began to get rid of anything and everything that reminded him of the life that he once had but didn’t have anymore. First, it was removing the social media posts. Then, it was unfollowing his old teammates and so-called friends who never checked in on him. Finally, it was hurting you. At the end of the 2022 season, Nolan requested that you have a deep serious talk together. In the back of your mind, you knew that something big was coming; Nolan was already distant with you so maybe he needed some more time and space from you. He dropped the already expected and painful news but it didn’t make it hurt any less. Nolan expressed that you deserved better than him and being around you, unfortunately, reminded him both of his past and of a future life that he couldn’t give to you. You didn’t care about those things and it didn’t matter what he could or couldn’t do because all you wanted was him but Nolan already made up his mind to end the relationship.
You couldn’t believe that he would just give up on what you had but he did. Nolan told you he loved you so frequently but now, the feelings of love were going away. You already knew Nolan was devastated with the way his hockey career and life derailed but you never would have imagined him hurting you because of that. You were already there with him through some of the toughest moments for him and were willing to continue to stay through them; if you didn’t love Nolan as much as you did, you would have left sooner. Naturally, you tried to reason with him but everything was pointing towards the end of your relationship. It frustrated you that Nolan wanted to break up for good instead of just taking time apart from each other; you were willing to give him the time and space he desired and the hope of you possibly come back together lingered around throughout the air. You had Nolan but he ended up burning you; you thought your relationship was so solid and strong, that these setbacks and other things wouldn’t break it down but it shattered everything you built together.
Nolan blamed being young in love and wanting to meet new people as a reason for wanting to separate. Deep down, he wanted to be with someone who didn’t know or had any connection to his hockey days so that he could leave that part of himself behind; Nolan just wanted a blank slate to start over from it all but that came at the expense of the beautiful relationship you spent years in. Breaking up with you was like watching a part of himself die; you and Nolan were always separate individuals but your relationship interconnected you together in such a profound way. Nolan’s honest confession to end the relationship hurt so deeply; you could feel the pain in your chest and Nolan could feel the pain of what he did rattling in his bones. It was almost like that tingling feeling Nolan felt the day when you first met returned back.
This breakup was 100% one of those “it’s not you, it’s me” moments. Nolan felt bad about breaking your heart but he felt like the only way for him to get peace from his past wasn’t to carry things from it into his future. He wanted out because of himself, not because you were a bad person or something you did; Nolan truly did have a catch on his hands being with you but he couldn’t hold on much longer so he let you go. You held out and held on to your relationship with Nolan for so long; you sacrificed so much to be and stay with him but Nolan just didn’t want to continue. At the time, it was hard to understand why he didn’t fight for your relationship harder but maybe it was a sign that Nolan wasn’t the one for you and you were never really meant to be.
At least once every day since the first time it was shared, you would tell each other “I love you.” Now, all you could say to each other was goodbye. You could see in Nolan’s eyes that he was trying his hardest to not cry but he did anyway. For one last time, Nolan held you in his arms in a tender embrace as the both of you lost tears. Normally, a couple that just broke up wouldn’t do this but Nolan tilted your head up towards him and sealed the end of your storied relationship with a final tear-soaked kiss.
Over the course of the next few days, you packed up your respective things and began the separation, silently removing things from your shared space. Throughout your packing, you both found little mementos from your relationship; things like the paper ticket Nolan wrote his number on when he first met you, the gold N necklace Nolan gave you on your first anniversary, the birthday card you gave Nolan when he turned 23 last year, a bottle of your perfume that was Nolan’s favorite. You had also found some of Nolan’s clothes that he had given you over the years you were together. The world that you had known together had turned around and it was a lot to process; you really were beginning to enjoy your new home but now, you both had to return back to your old one. Thankfully, one of your local friends let you stay at her place in the meantime until everything was in place for you to return back to Philadelphia and Nolan stayed at the apartment. You were all his and Nolan was all yours but that was all gone. Leaving you behind wasn’t easy but he did it anyway. It was wild how you moved to Vegas at the start of the 2021-22 season and by the time the season ended in April 2022, the relationship was over.
The 2022 off-season was supposed to be different this time. At the start of the year, you and Nolan had made plans to explore Europe for an off-season couple’s trip but before the start of the summer, that trip never happened. Flights and hotels were refunded; the diamond ring Nolan had planned on proposing to you with on the trip was returned to the jewelry store. Nolan went back to his happy place at home with his family but returning to Winnipeg without you this time did hurt him a bit. As expected with returning back, Nolan had to deal with the whispers and rumors that came from people who had no idea what he was going through.
The only bright side of the otherwise sad off-season was that Nolan’s quality of life improved a lot as his migraines continued to get better with the time off; he eventually found a good regime to help him cope and he was able to do some of the things he loved, like golfing and listening to loud music. While he was home, Nolan cooked up a good plan to fly back to Philadelphia to convince you to take him back but that was all in his head; he hadn’t been to Philly since you both moved to Vegas for the trade and he never did return to play a game there. Nolan couldn’t bring himself to go back to the city that was home at one point but isn’t anymore so he let the plan go and let time pass by.
————————————————————
2022-23
The 2022 off-season turned into Nolan not returning to the NHL at all. The Vegas Golden Knights ended up winning the Stanley Cup in 2023 without him; it hurt the both of you to see Nolan’s old team succeed at achieving one of his goals. Despite the progress made in Nolan’s recovery, playing hockey full-time unfortunately never really made its way back into the picture for him.
Nolan still quietly kept tabs on you, watching you from the sidelines. You finished up your Master’s degree program and he was proud of you again, just like he was when you graduated with your Bachelor’s degree. It had been over a year since you last talked to Nolan. You tried to keep tabs on Nolan but he wasn’t really close with anyone from his old teams anymore and you only saw brief glimpses of him through his Winnipeg friends. You romantically moved on with someone new, someone who fulfilled the “if he wanted to, he would” that Nolan chose not to meet. Nolan moved on too, he met a girl in an online support group for athletes whose careers were derailed by injuries. His new girlfriend met the requirement of no hockey connections and she was great; he deeply loved and cared for her, just like he did for you.
Despite the amount of freedom you had from each other since the break up, you weren’t fully clean and still had pieces of each other left lingering all over you. You would never look at a vehicle with muddy tires the same way –they reminded you of when you and Nolan went to Hawaii for All-Star Break, rented a Jeep, and explored the island–, you would never look at anything related to ham and cheese without thinking of Nolan’s pre-game meal and how you missed going to watch him play, the migraine medication commercials made you think about the treatments that didn’t work and wondered what was helping him now. Nolan was notoriously known for his privacy and for being a lurker so you had no idea if he had truly missed you.
Sometimes, Nolan did miss you but he wasn’t going to let you know that. When the Italian restaurant that you had gone to on your first date closed down, Nolan wanted to talk to you to reminisce on those good times but he didn’t reach out, he couldn’t see orange juice without thinking about how he always kept a bottle in the fridge for you, plaid always reminded him of the flannels you wore in the fall, hearing certain songs on the radio made him wonder if you would like this song. One day, while figuring out what to listen to, Nolan came across the playlist. During your relationship, Nolan made a secret playlist called “y/n-core” and it contained all of the songs you liked and songs that reminded him of you. He listened to it whenever he missed you; when you found out about it, you made a similar playlist for him. Music was something important to both of you so deleting the playlist was hard so you both kept it; Nolan would secretly listen to it whenever he missed you and look back at old photos from when you were together and when you missed him, you would put on one of his old shirts and play it as a coping mechanism.
Looking back at the relationship, some questions began to arise. Were there any warning signs that you missed beforehand that could have indicated that the relationship was doomed? Could you blame Nolan for wanting a change? Could you blame Nolan for not changing his mind and not wanting to reconcile what you had? Could Nolan blame you for moving on when he didn’t want to stay together? Neither of you would have ever thought your relationship would have ended the way it did. It started off like a beautiful love song but it crumbled like a piece of paper when it ended. Neither of you would say that you wasted your time being together because you lived and learned throughout your relationship; you both carried those things into your new relationships. Even though you’re not sure if you’ll ever see or hear from him again, you had hoped that Nolan was doing okay and he had the same hope for you. Over time, you forgave Nolan for what he did and Nolan forgave himself for his actions. You understood why Nolan broke your heart the way that he did; he did it because he loved you so much that he willingly walked away from you so that someone better could come into the picture. Nolan’s capacity for love was enough for you but he saw it differently so you had to fully accept his decision.
Even though you’ve both moved on to new partners, your name and Nolan’s name still lingered on each other’s lips whenever either of you kissed your new lover. Sometimes, you missed the moments when Nolan would randomly interrupt you with a kiss (your new partner wouldn’t attempt such a thing) and Nolan actually missed doing it to you and couldn’t bring himself to continue that with his new girlfriend. Every now and then, the feelings of missing each other would occasionally sink in and you both would miss and think about the other. You both hated missing each other because you both had new lovers, but that didn’t prevent those feelings coming up. Sometimes, you both wished that the other would call but those calls would never come and you had to let each other go. If you somehow did end up back together, it would cause more pain than love; how do you fully trust someone who hurt you so much? You both still carried a little of the love you shared together but things would never go back to being the same. After being out of touch for so long, there was no point in trying to revitalize the relationship you had together or to even try attempting to be friends because you were both on different roads and chapters in life. The last drop of rain from the storm of your relationship dried off the pavement and there were no physical stains left behind.
————————————————————
20xx-xx (Epilogue)
Many years later, when you were chilling with your new partner at your apartment, they accidentally spilled water on their shirt so you gave them one of Nolan’s old practice shirts to wear. Seeing your new lover wear something from your old lover made you short-circuit for a minute. How can someone that you love now look so good in something that belonged to someone you loved before? Your new lover also asked you to marry them underneath a pillow fort while wearing Nolan’s old shirt with your dream ring and the date this occurred was the 19th. On a warm sandy beach somewhere, Nolan proposed to his new girlfriend on the exact same day with the same ring you wanted (his now fiancee’s dream ring). Throughout your relationship with Nolan, the number 19 started appearing more in your life and started holding more importance to you because of him. It was Nolan’s jersey number in Philadelphia (changed to 41 in Vegas), his birthday was on the 19th of September, it was part of the address of the first place you lived together, and it was the age that you fell in love with each other. The number nineteen meant something significant to the both of you and neither of you would ever forget it.

life’s little moments - je9
Current Mood: An NHL Moodboard Series
-> jack eichel - father au
-> genre - pure fluff
Telling Jack you’re pregnant…
It took you a solid week and a half to decide on how you’d tell Jack the big news. Nothing seemed good enough for such a big moment, though you knew no matter how you told him Jack would be the happiest man on planet earth.
Pacing the floor you impatiently waited to see Jack’s car pull in the driveway, but once you did you thought you were going to puke. Trying not to be so awkward as he came inside, finding you in the kitchen next to a gift box and a card.
“Babe, what’s going on?”
He wrapped you in a hug, eyeing the gift before he gave you a kiss.
“Just open it, it’s nothing crazy. A little surprise just because.”
Jack opened the card, which you kept plain so as to not sway his mind in any particular direction.
“I can’t wait to wear this next season and cheer you on. Love, Baby Eichel.”
As if there was a delay in his brain, Jack just stared at the card for a solid sixty seconds before he’d caught on.
“You’re kidding…no.”
Ripping open the box he confirmed his suspicion as he revealed a baby sized Knights jersey, fitted with Jack’s number nine and “daddy” across the back shoulders.
“There’s a baby in there?!”
His hands reached for your stomach as he smiled from ear to ear, unable to contain his excitement as he picked you up and spun you around. Your laugh filled the room as he shouted loud, your voices echoing throughout the house.
“This is amazing baby, god I love you so much!”
During your pregnancy…
Having no idea what to expect your first time being pregnant, you’d say things were somewhat smooth. The occasional weird craving sending Jack all over town to pick up whatever food combinations your brain had cooked up.
But he never once complained, happy to pick up whatever it was you craved no matter what time of day it was.
“Where are my girls?”
Jack’s voice rang in a sing-song tone as he entered the kitchen with a bag in hand, your current obsession being Thai food from a local restaurant downtown. To which Jack happily made the long drive versus having it delivered, never wanting to risk your order being messed up and making you upset with how wild your hormones had been.
He quickly rushed to the couch, placing a kiss on your lips before kissing your belly, always making sure to say hello to baby girl as well.
“Hello my princess, I know you missed me sooo much. Daddy just went to grab mommy food, but I’m back!”
You couldn’t help but smile at how in love Jack already was with your baby girl. He’d lay with you for hours just to be near her, to feel her kick, to sing and read to her. He was everything you could hope for and more in a father already.
Bringing home your baby girl…
Jack had been driving nearly fifteen under the speed limit the entire way home from the hospital. Absolutely terrified to hit even the tiniest bump with you and your baby girl in the back seat. His knuckles turning white with how hard he was gripping the steering wheel.
“Jack, you’re doing fine. We are just a few houses away, you can breathe now.”
He let out a breath as he’d finally pulled in the driveway, turning off the car before rushing to open your door for you.
“Here babe, let me help you.”
Jack held your hand as he helped you from the back seat, taking his time to help you up to the front door as you were still a bit sore.
“I’ve got it from here Jack, thank you honey.”
He kissed your lips before running back to the car to grab the car seat, again moving at a snail's pace as he was petrified of bumping the baby or tripping while carrying her.
As you stood at the door, watching him smile down at your newborn daughter in the car seat, you felt a few tears welling in your eyes. This was pure happiness. The newest chapter of your life beginning with the man you loved. Already blown away with how easily he fell into the role of dad, and excited to see what an amazing father he would become.

Marc-André Fleury/ F! OC
Summery: A story where a world famous goaltender with a heart and soul of gold becomes a knight in shining silver for a female hockey player in the NHL who is trying to balance being a single mother and athlete after just being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights. Can Marc-André Fleury show Barlow Kane he can be the father her daughter never had, help her make a home and a life in Nevada and be the love of her life she never thought she would find?
Warnings: swearing, hockey related lingo. I think that's it
Word count: just over 2.6k (sorry this is more of a filler chapter that had some writers block problems. 5 will be better I promise)
Game day.
First game of the pre-season and the city was buzzing. Hockey was back in the desert and the fans couldn't wait to see the same faces back on the ice, along with the new ones that would be joining them. Barlow could feel the static in the air, the buzz of the excitement. The game was at seven that night, and it was noon when she looked at the clock. She knew she needed to get her pregame nap in and something to eat before she left for the rink. Katie Had already taken Harper for the day, so Barlow could get ready in peace without having to wrangle a toddler on her first day. Going through her pre game rituals, Barlow made a pot of spaghetti, fruit salad and some butter bread. After eating the hearty meal she cleaned everything up and went upstairs to her room to take her pre game nap. Setting her alarm on her phone to make sure she gets up on time, she shut her black out blinds and turned off the lights, laying down for her hour and half nap. Once her head hit the pillow she was out like a light.
Beep!
Beep!
Beep!
Beep!
The sound of her alarm screaming in her ear sent Barlow flying out of bed. She ran a hand through her hair and down her face. She knew she had to get dressed for the game. Going to the bathroom she did her business before washing her hands and grabbing her makeup bag. She pulled out her waterproof and smudge proof black mascara and eyeliner and did a simple makeup, just enough to make her eyes pop, but not enough to make it nasty while playing. Once she did that she French braided her hair down her back, making it tight so it didn't fall out. Once she tied it off she went to get dressed. Putting on a dark cherry pants suit with an off white shirt with a small v neck to it under the jacket. Black ankle heeled boots graced her feet. She tied the black satin belt around the jacket to keep it shut and looked at herself in the mirror. She looked sharp and clean, perfect for her walk into the arena and later for interviews. The suit made her look skinnier than she was and it made her legs go on for miles. She smiled before grabbing her Ray-Ban sunglasses and throwing them on her head before making her way downstairs. She grabbed her car keys and made her way down to her car. She slipped into the driver's seat and started up her SUV, pulling out of the driveway. She pulled down her sunglasses and threw on some music from her pre game music playlist. Some songs from Imagine Dragons and The Score started to blare through her speakers, getting her in the game mood. She stopped at the Starbucks along the way and got a coffee to help her keep going late into the night before getting back on the road.
Pulling into the players parking lot at the rink she shut off her car and grabbed her bag, coffee and keys as she got out of the car. Her boot heels clocked on the pavement, her head held high as she walked down the sidewalk to the arena doors. Fans could be heard cheering and chanting. She lived for moments like this. Taking a deep breath she walked into the rink, a few cameras flashing as she made her walk down the tunnels to the locker room. Keeping a straight face she let the media team get their pregame pictures of her, along with the others who entered the rink. Once she got to the locker room Barlow took a deep breath and let her nervousness sink to her feet. She flashed the boys a smile as she made her way over to her cubby. Running her fingers over the smooth gold colored silk jersey, staring at her name on the back with a smile. She had loved her old team, the memories she had made there, but this was a fresh start for her and Harper. This was the beginning of something new. Now she was going to throw herself wholeheartedly into it.
Grabbing her Under Armor leggings and shirt that she wore under her padding she walked off to the dressing room / shower they had installed just for her. Shutting the door behind her she slipped off her pantsuit and folded it up neatly to put back on after the game. Slipping on her leggings she tied off the built in drawstrings at the top to make them extra secure. She then pulled on her skintight long sleeve that went under her padding to keep it from rubbing her skin raw. Once that was on she went back out to the main locker room to put on her padding and equipment. Slipping on her leg paddings first she strapped them down before grabbing her chest paddings. Slipping the heavy padding over her head she snapped the buckles in place. It had a bit more padding than normal on the front, but other than that it looked like any normal hockey padding. Then she grabbed her arm padding and slipped them on as well. Pulling her socks on next she tapped them down around her knees and calves, making sure they were nice and tight. Then slipping on her hockey pants she tied them off at the waist. Next she grabbed her skates and pulled them on, lacing them up tight before pulling her socks down over the tongues and backs. Once all this was done Barlow turned around and took the silky gold jersey off its hanger and held it in her hands for a moment. Looking down at her name and number one last time before slipping it over her head, letting it fall smoothly over her padding. Barlow knew it was different, and it was always pointed out to her, but she never warmed up before she got dressed. She wanted to be in full or almost full gear before warming with stretches to get the stiffness out of her gear and feel for any discomforts that could hinder her play.
She got onto the floor and went into the splits, grabbing her covered skate blade with her hands and leaning forward to stretch out her back and hamstrings. She held this for about a minute before switching to the other side. Barlow was half way through her stretch when she felt a pair of eyes on her. Looking up, Barlow saw the brown watchful eyes of Marc-André staring at her as he started to lay out his gear.
"Can I help you, Flower? She asked in French to the goalie. She watched as a smile crept across his face and he pulled off his baseball hat to run a hand through his hair.
"Not at all." He simply answered. Barlow gave him a small side eye with a smile before going back to her stretches. After warming up a bit she stood up and did a few jumps, then turned at the hips to loosen up a bit more. After making sure she felt warmed up and her gear felt good she grabbed her sticks and made sure they were taped up right and the right length. As Barlow went about getting ready she turned to face Flower while fixing the tap on one of her sticks.
"Are we still on for tomorrow's lunch?" She continued speaking in French. For the past 2 Tuesdays Barlow, Harper and Marc-André had gone back to the small restaurant to have a meal together to just relax. It had been super nice and each time they hung out outside of the rink, Barlow felt her heart opening up a bit more each time. Flower's soft laugh, his smile, the way he held her hand softly in his during the drive, or how he would kiss her cheek when he dropped them off. Watching him with Harper, how gentle and sweet he was with the toddler made her heart soar.
"Of course, I wouldn't miss it. I love my time with my girls." Marc-André answered as he started to strap on his padding. He wasn't looking at Barlow when he spoke but if he had he would have seen the deer in the headlights look on her face. Her stick slipped from her hand and landed on Max's arm with a thud. The forward yelped as the stick hit him and Barlow jumped at the sound.
"Oh Max, I'm so sorry!" She squeaked as she picked up her stick. Max shook his head with a smile before going back to his gear. Barlow grabbed her stick and slowly looked back up at Marc-André, who now had the same look on his face she did after realizing what he had said. His mouth opened and closed a few times before his face turned bright red and he ducked his head. Barlow quickly grabbed the rest of her gear and walked out of the locker room and went to the tunnels. Her heart was racing and her mind felt like jello. Did he really just call her and Harper his girls? Taking a deep breath she shook her head and tried to clear her mind. She couldn't let it keep her focus off the game tonight. She had to remain calm and collected.
Meanwhile Flower was sitting in the locker room still red faced and wide eyed. He couldn't believe he said that. Sure he felt it but he hadn't planned on saying something like that yet to her. He didn't want to scare Barlow off. Max watched as the blonde had raced out of the room and the star goalie sat there in shellshock.
"What happened? What did I miss?" Max asked. He looked over at Marc-André after Bralow raced out of the locker room door. Flower waved his hand, trying to dismiss the whole thing but Max wasn't about to let it drop. "Come on Flower. What was said between you two that made her look like a doe in the headlights?" With a heavy sigh Flower looked up at the forward.
"I called Harper and her 'My Girls.'" Flower told him softly. He blushed, the dark red spreading across his cheeks as he looked back down at his skate laces. Max smiled softly and shook his head, before getting up and walking over to the goaltender. Placing a hand on his shoulder Max spoke up.
"Marc, just tell her how you feel. She was just taken but surprised and embarrassed about dropping her stuff. After the game, talk to her. Tell her. You both deserve to be happy."
"But what if she doesn't feel the same?"
"Trust me. That girl is as gone as you are. I promise she feels the same." Max said, "Trust me on this." With a final pat on the shoulder he went back to his cubby to finish getting ready. Flower thought over what Max said and realized he was right. If he didn't take the chance he may never get them to truly be his girls. Pulling the rest of his gear with a smile on his face, he finished getting ready. Barlow was still out in the tunnel warming up when he led the rest of the team out to head down to the ice to warm up. Walking up to her, Marc-André tapped her leg pad with his stick to get her attention.
Barlow looked up at Marc-André after he tapped her leg and felt a blush creep across her face. His words still rang through her mind.
"Can we talk after the game? There is something I need to tell you." He whispered as he leaned closer to her, so only she could hear his question. Barlow nodded her head. After Flower called them his girls, she knew they needed to lay it out on the table, and she needed to open her heart up again. The goaltender smiled and tapped her leg again before going to the front of the line to lead out the team. Barlow stayed back a bit, going to the middle of the line as they filed their way out down the tunnel to the ice. The roar of the crowd grew louder and louder the closer they walked to the ice, the pounding of the music over the speakers filling her body. She felt her body and mind come alive at the sounds and her instincts took over.
Stepping into the ice she pushed off and gilded behind Erik as she did a few warm up laps. Once her legs felt good she started doing some stick work with a puck, doing all kinds of crazy and weird things to get her mind going. Barlows visor was tinted a slight blue to where you could still see her eyes, but it was darker and the blue kept the glare off the ice. After having a concussion a few years back she switched to the tinted visor to help reduce the glare so she could focus better. She continued to warm up, passing the puck around with Mark and Max. They talked and joked around lighty, taking turns making shots at the net now and again, though Flower would stop them with ease. Barlow didn't like to show off before the game started, so that younger players couldn't pick up on her play style off the bat, and she could surprise them.
"Are you ready for Desert Hockey?" Asked Max as he skated up next to her well she pushed around the puck lightly. She smiled up at the forward and nodded her head. She was happy to be back on the ice, with the roar of the crowd. Tonight they played against the Arizona Coyotes for the start of the preseason. She loved the shine of the gold and glitter that seemed to be everywhere. She always admired it when she used to play against Vegas, but now to be a part of the shine was something special.
Looking up and behind Flower's net, she saw Katie with Harper in an alternate Vegas Jersey, her number on the sleeves and back with "Mommy" over the number. A huge smile broke out across her face as she began to skate over to the glass. She tapped Flower on the pads with her stick as she skated by, nodding her head towards the glass. She bummed into the glass, making Harper laugh as she waved to her mother.
"HI BABY!" Barlow yelled over the noise and through the glass to her daughter. Placing a gloved hand on the glass she waited for Harper to place hers on the glass on the other side. She loved watching her daughter smile and laugh, her eyes wide as she watched all the lights and skaters on the ice. She felt someone skate up beside her and saw Marc out of the corner of her eye. He tapped on the glass with his stick, making Harper laugh. He laughed as well, a happy sound filling the space between them. He had a puck in his glove, and he tossed it over the glass for Harper to catch. She squealed with joy as she held the puck in her hands. Barlow smiled at Marc before waving to Harper one last time before going back to warmups.
"Thank you, she really loved that." She told Flower as they skated back away from the glass. He smiled brightly, his cheeks a rosey color from the cold air.
"Anytime for her."
Those three words were all that were needed to make the smile on Barlow's face brighter. The horn sounded, telling the players warmups were over. Taking her time to get to the line, making sure she fell back into the middle of the lineup, she went down the tunnel with the guys to the locker room to await the start of lineup. Hockey season started now.

“why don’t you ever post me?” & “no need for attitude” with brendan
“valentines day”
brendan brisson x reader
warnings: little cursing
word count: 1.5k
brendan isn’t the type of guy to ‘only post hockey related things’ to his instagram, so you’d expect to be posted on his instagram feed more than just one casual appearance in a photo dump. although you guys have only been dating for 4 months, seeing his friends post their girlfriends and brendan hardly ever posting you, honestly made you really sad. you tried to talk to him about it once but he claimed that he doesn’t like posting too much and that he’d post you next time. and of course, there was no ‘next time.’
with valentine’s day being tomorrow, you couldn’t help but wonder if brendan would be posting you or not. “hi babe” he smiles as he opens the door. “hi bren!” you say, sliding past him into the house. “oh what’s up y/n! i didn’t know you were coming over.” matty says, appearing from the kitchen. “eh i thought i’d stop by. where’s your guys’ valentine’s day stuff? the house is so bland as always” you laugh, taking off your shoes. “you decorate for valentine’s day?! what are you cupid or something?” matty chuckles. “yes i do decorate, and clearly you guys don’t. anyways, i made heart cookies for you guys” “fuck yeah! thanks cupid! i’m definitely calling you that now” matty laughs, taking the plate of cookies from your hands. “yeah dude, she’s fucking obsessed with valentine’s day. even though it’s like the second most irrelevant holiday” brendan chimes in, wrapping his arm around your shoulder. “what’s the first most irrelevant?” you question. “st. patrick’s day” “brendan, i swear to god if you aren’t wearing green i’m gonna pinch you” you say, hitting his chest playfully. brendan bursts out laughing, “y/n you’re such a child, now cmon let’s go upstairs” brendan says in between laughs. “yeah but you love it” “i do?” “shut up brendan!”
as you guys are laying in his bed, you can’t help but feel bad. you always tell each other when you’re upset, and knowing you’re hiding your emotions from brendan is making you feel even worse. “hey bren?” you say softly, your head still on his chest. “hm?” he hums not looking up from his phone. “can i ask you something? and please don’t get mad.” this catches his attention and he puts his phone down, resting it on his thigh. “what’s wrong? you’re scaring me” he chuckles nervously. you sit up and look at him with soft eyes, afraid of his reaction to your question. “um, so this is going to be our first valentine’s day together and i know you don’t like posting much on instagram but like, i dunno, i was just wondering if you were gonna post me?” you say, fidgeting with your fingers. “oh uh i hadn’t really thought about it, but like yeah sure i guess? i mean the guys will give me so much shit for it though so like, can i post it on my close friends story? also so the fans don’t like attack you or anything” he shrugs. “what?” you blurt out, stupidly shocked by his answer. as much as you wanted him to say something along the lines of ‘of course i’m gonna post you, no need to ask!’ you knew going into this he was going to say something stupid.
“what do you mean what? i said yes, isn’t that what you wanted?” he says snappily. “i just didn’t expect it to be on your close friends story, i always post you on my public story..” you say, lowering your voice towards the end of the sentence. “well you have like eight hundred followers not twenty thousand! jesus christ y/n you ask me to post you and then complain about me doing so?” he scoffs, and this angers you. “jesus bren, no need for attitude. i’m not about to argue with you over this, i’m going home. if you care so much about what the boys think of you posting your girlfriend, then maybe you shouldn’t have one!” you exclaim, climbing off of his bed and slamming his bedroom door shut. you quickly rush down the stairs, and quickly slip on your shoes not even tying them fully. “y/n whats going on?” matty says from the couch, genuine concern in his voice. “i’m going home, that’s what’s going on. enjoy your fucking cookies!” you yell the last part so that brendan can hear you. “y/n cmon-“ you hear brendan say from the top of the stairs as you make your way out the door, closing it before he can finish.
you get into your car and drive down the street, before pulling into a semi empty parking lot, trying to gather your feelings. you have no idea wether you and brendan are still together or not, and it’s already haunting you.
—
brendan’s pov:
i never realized how stupid it sounded until she repeated it back to me. “if you care so much about what the boys think of you posting your girlfriend, then maybe you shouldn’t have one” the words pierced my heart as they spat out of her lips. i didn’t even realize how dumb i sounded, saving myself from a few taunting comments from my friends, instead of treating the best thing to come into my life with the love she deserves.
i’m in utter shock watching her leave my house. matty looks up at me from the couch. “the fuck is her deal?” matty chuckles, making my blood boil. “nothing matty, its not her fucking fault so don’t talk about her like it is!” i shout at him, instantly taken back by my own words. “yo dude chill out. what the hell just happened?” he asks. “i don’t even know matty. its alll my fault” i say, trying to hold back tears. matty walks over to me and meets me halfway on the stairs, pulling me into a tight hug. “wanna talk about it?” “yes please.”
he sits me down on the couch and i explain everything. he looks at me with pity. “look man i agree, it is your fault. but that doesn’t mean i won’t help you. i think you should give her space, but at least just text her asking if you guys are still together. valentine’s day is tomorrow briss, you gotta fix this sooner than later” he says patting my shoulder. i listen to his words and text her.
me: are we still together?
y/n <3: idk, do u wanna be?
me: yeah.
y/n <3: then we are, sorry for lashing out at u
me: you’re sorry? y/n stop it, I’M sorry. can i come over, i wanna apologize in person
y/n <3: yeah sure i guess
immediately i bolt off of the couch, startling matty. “i gotta go man, cya” “where are you going?” “y/n’s house. i’m getting her flowers on the way there” “oh, okay.” matty says slightly confused.
—
no one’s pov:
as you open the door, your puffy eyes are met with brendan’s bloodshot eyes and a bouquet of your favorite flowers. “brendan you didn’t need to get me anything” you say, letting him into your apartment.” “it’s the least i could do. y/n i’m so fucking sorry.” “brendan its-“ “no no no it’s not okay. let me finish” he says, as you take the bouquet into the kitchen.
“i’m so stupid y/n. i was too embarrassed to get taunting comments made by my friends than to post the one girl i love most. i hate myself for it, and i never even realized how stupid it sounded until you repeated it back to me. i promise im not embarrassed of you, and the thought that you may think that genuinely makes me sick. i know i let you down, and i don’t think i’ll forgive myself for that.” he sighs after finishing his ramble. “brendan you didn’t let me down. i mean yeah it doesn’t feel good to not get posted by your boyfriend, but i promise you didn’t let me down. i love you brendan, and i know how the boys can be. you’ve told me before that you always feel like a punching bag to them, so i don’t blame you for putting a guard up, i just wish it wasn’t a guard over our relationship. i know we can work through these problems, and i just want us to have a good valentine’s day together” you smile at him. his eyes go soft, and he immediately leans in to kiss you. your guys’ lips melt against each other, and you feel the love. honestly, you think this is the most meaningful kiss you’ve ever had, and so brendan thinks so too. “i swear i’m gonna marry you one day.” he says as he kisses the top of your head.
the next morning you wake up to not only a story post, but also a 10 slide photo dump with a thought-out caption. the photo dump contains pictures you guys have taken together, stupid little videos of you, and lastly a photo of brendan kissing your temple as you slept. your heart feels full as you read the caption he wrote for you. ‘happy valentine’s day to my amazing v-day obsessed girlfriend. thank you for coming into my life, i love you.’ “god i love valentine’s day” you say to yourself.
