Dynaco Repair Post No. 6: The Glow Renewed

Tuesday evening, 12-26-23

I was completely caught off guard by the box by the front door when I got back from Bunny Duty/Safeway/Post Office errands today. Things are supposed to be delivered starting tomorrow, three different packages, but nothing was scheduled to come today.

Busted out in a big grin as soon as I saw it was from my bud in SC: The EL34s got here two days early! So...I was completely (and delightedly) doing something much different this evening than I had planned!

In the box were five tubes, all of them "good spares" I had personally pulled out of working ST70s I had. I'd de-tubed them before I sold them on eBay. They went to afore-mentioned friend who was going to use them in HIS Dynaco, but hadn't yet. He sent 'em back to me, four of the square-bottled Mullards (three of 'em original Dynaco-branded actual Mullards), and one "Winged C" (the Russian iteration), and a JJ as a spare. These had been in one of the systems I'd set up for ANOTHER of our buddies (my bestie who died in 2021). Old, but good, solid tubes with lots of life left in 'em.

The 5AR4 I have is the original one. The silvering at the top is almost non-existent. It's a US-made Mullard clone:

SO...I got the ST70 ready for relaunch. Put it on the bench and hooked it up to my trusty old Micronta variac, set to "Zero Volts", got the fuse in, and switched it on.

Started out slowly turning it up to 10V, and waiting 15 minutes, and then turned it up another 10V to 20V, and waiting 15 more minutes, lather, rinse, repeat, until I got it up to about 117V.

At about 40V I began to see the barest glow in all but one tube (that Winged C). At 50V, it began to glow as well. So far so good. After about an hour, I'd nursed it up to 70V, every tube glowing strong. I let it sit at 70V for about a half hour, and then just slowly turned the knob on the variac up to 117.

Every tube came up like a champ. The ST70 Glows once again!

I let it sit and burn for about an hour, and checked the bias voltages. I had set the two adjustment pots to their center point. The left channel needed the slightest of increase (probably due to the Winged C) to get it up to the correct voltage, but the right channel was dead-set-centered on 1.56V. Boom. Rock solid. Done.

Now that the repairs are done, and I know everything is working, I will start tomorrow on re-connecting and re-arranging all the components in the system. I'm kinda spent at the moment...it's been quite a day! I'll post more tomorrow, but for tonight I call it a victory. All of the thanks go to my buddies @misfitwashere (who got me the parts) and our old compadre "Harbourmaster" on the East Coast, who sent the tubes.

Wednesday Night, 12-27-23

Well, it took awhile, but I finally got things re-wired and in position. Got the turntable and the FM3 hooked up and both work splendidly. I found a super-shielded RCA cable for the turntable specifically, and it sounds better...there's almost no need for the turntable ground wire now!

First, tho', I have to show off my speakers. These started their lives as Pioneer boxes, Model CS-44, to be exact. I got them at the thrift store for $25.

BUT: the 8-inch woofers and tweeters in them were garbage, so I replaced them with new components: A pair of 8" butyl-rubber surround, poly-cone woofers (they will never need reconing), and a pair of genuine Danish SEAS Tweeters, salvaged from a working pair of Dynaco A-25s.

The result? The 8-Inch Dynaco Speaker That Never Was! The A-10s had 6-inch woofers, and all the others had 10-inch woofers.

And the sonic result? A pair of mid-sized bookshelf speakers with rock-solid bass and the clearest, most well-defined mids and highs you could ever want to hear! And they don't look bad, either!

And that about wraps it up! I've finally got my music back. I'll finally be able to continue my vinyl transcribing, and won't have to worry about my equipment for another good long while.

1966 @traynor_amps#YGA1 A Signature amp. I bought it* because it's a cool old script logo #Traynor, and although I had never seen one before, I didn't realize just how rare this model is until I posted it in the Traynor Facebook group. The word "unicorn" is not bandied about lightly by those Traynor nerds, lemme tell you!** 😉

I just know it is going to be a beast. It's basically a guitar version of the more famous YBA1 bass amp, so it packs 45 watts into a single 15" speaker. It's filthy because it has been in storage since 1971, but all original right down to the two pronger. I dare not flip that power switch on because all sorts of bad things can happen when an amplifier has been sitting for years and you run full wall voltage into it all at once. My amp tech @marshalllespaulfan will be doing a complete checkup before bringing it up slowly on a VARIAC (a device that allows you to gradually increase the voltage from 0 to the full 120 volts of North American AC, rather than just hitting the amp with the full wall current straight away). I am guessing he also has some kind of light-bulb contraption that acts as a current limiter (if there is a short circuit anywhere in the amp, the bulb takes the full brunt of the uncontrolled current flow instead of the amp components being damaged). He is also going to test the original tubes to see if they are still within spec.

Can't wait until it's up and running again (and CLEAN)! 😂

Písečná trilogie - vrchol série

Stálo mě to asi 11 stovek a nějaký drobný, z GOG mám všechny za asi 9 éček celkem protože se periodicky opakuje sleva, z disků hry instalovat nebudu ale prostě jsem je chtěl fyzicky.

Systémový požadavky: Takový že by to mohli portovat na dnešní smartphone a ani by se u toho nezahříval.

Soubojovej systém: Blbej, doporučuju trainer.

Příběh v kostce: Princ a jeho tatík vyrabovali nějakej palác v Indii, vzali zajatce a vypravili se s kořistí k nějakýmu jednoduššímu sultánovi. Princ si jako kořist nechal takovou hezkou kudlu a sultán dostal obří přesýpačky. U toho byl takovej chcípající a chrchlající píčus vezír kterej věděl co je ta veteš zač a že s ní získá nesmrtelnost. Naved tak prince aby kudlu vrazil do přesýpaček, mladej blbec to udělal a tak všechny kromě sebe, vezíra a nějaký Farah proměnil v písečný monstra. Tak potom princ běhal společně s Farah po sultánově paláci s cílem posbírat všechen písek a dát vezírovi po čuráku. To se mu povedlo a ještě si u toho s Farah zašukal.

Poznámka: Na Windows Vista a vyšší instalovat jedině GOG verzi. Originální verze si zaregistruje vlastní verzi jednoho DLL souboru což má za následek problémy.

Logo se nevešlo na manuál.

Obě CD maj svoji grafiku.

Java verze od Gameloftu - s PC verzí to nemá nic moc společnýho ale na přestávky ve škole to bylo dobrý.

Warrior Within

Systémový požadavky: Portovat na Android a iOS. To je rozkaz! Dnešní smartphone to musí zvládnout jako nic.

Soubojovej systém: Dobrej, trainer neni třeba.

Příběh v kostce: Prince se kvuli jebání s časem rozhodnul sejmou strážce času kterej ho kvuli tomu pronásledoval s cílem ho odstranit. Ten se tak rozhodnul vypravit na takovej ostrov s takovym palácem, dostat se do času kdy byly písky času vytvořeny, zabránit jejich vzniku a změnit tak svůj osud. Cestou na moři ho přepadla taková kunda s dobrou prdelí (Shahdee), v souboji ho připravila o meč, hodila ho do moře ale cíl se jí nepodařil protože princ se vyplavil na tom ostrově na kterej měl namířeno. Klackem zmlátil vrány, pak zachránil nějakou Kaileenu když se jí ta kunda s dobrou prdelí snažila sejmout, dělal svoje typický opičí kousky ve dvou časech, několikrát selhal ale nakonec se mu to povedlo a s Kaileenou postavil loď na který se s ní plavil domu do Babylonu. A pochopitelně že s ní na tý lodi cestou prcal… Nebo taky ne - když hráč nenasbíral všechny bonusy k životu tak Princ Kaileenu sejmul a domu se plavil sám.

Poznámka: Existuje HD mod kterej kromě celkovýho vylepšení opraví in-game Shahdee prdel tak aby byla jako v CGI.

Žádná variace se nekoná.

Mám několikrát dohráno! Příběhově je to zase mimo ale je to J2ME… Boss na konci jde vždycky na tu stranu na kterou se kouká takže když kouká vpravo tak je třeba běžet na pravý tlačítko.

Jo, taky dobrá hra…

Systémový požadavky: Fakt nechápu proč to ještě neportovali…

Soubojovej systém: Jako předchozí ale na steroidech.

Příběh v kostce: Tim že princ změnil svůj osud se příběh z prvního dílu nestal a tak si dopravil Kaileenu (který se na moři zmenšily kozy) do hořícího Babylonu. Kaileenu tam unesli a po několika opičárnách na římsách princ zjistil že za tim stojí ten chcípák vezír kterej měl teď tu kudlu. Tou ten chcípák bodnul Kaileenu aby vypustil písek a pak bodnul sebe a získal tak nesmrtelnost a božskou moc. Princovi se z toho rozjela schizofrenie a vydal se na pomstu. U toho potkal Farah která ho neznala ale pomohla mu až do konce. Vezíra sejmul, schizofrenie se zbavil a… Zazvonil konec a pohádky je konec.

Poznámka: Hra má problém s moderní iGPU. Možná je to jenom patchem na widescreen ale kdo by dneska chtěl trpět s poměrem 4:3 když má možnost 16:9 což je blíž zornýmu poli lidskýho zraku…

Nedám klíč. Kdo pirátí tak ať hledá jinde.

Java verze… Ze všech asi nejblíž PC verzi ale pořád mimo. Nevadí, na přestávky to stačilo ale ty závody mě vytáčely.

O amplificador 5150 foi sem dúvida o amplificador signature mais icônico que surgiu no mundo da guitarra. Podemos ter diversas marcas mais famosas, como a Fender, Marshall entre outros, mas um modelo signature tão famoso e desejado não há. Desde que Eddie Van Halen deixou de usar seus Marshalls com variac e passou a utilizar seu Peavey 5150, o amplificador virou sinônimo do Som de Eddie.

Obviously you'd want to have some sort of human variac to bring all the functions back up without immediately burning them out.

when you die, all the processes in your body slow down and come to a halt before starting to decay. which means if you were to revive someone from the dead, necromancer-style, you'd potentially have to kickstart their entire system back up from a state of inertia. which means it almost certainly would not be pretty. i'm talking coughing up clots of blood, nauseatingly intense migraines and muscle cramps, and all the sensory overload that would come with firing up the body's engines from frozen cold to fully functioning all guns blazing in the matter of seconds it takes to cast a resurrection spell.
