New Rho Under Siege

CW: discussion and a few images of urban conflict some may find disturbing. I've tried to avoid any actual depictions of death however.

The Locked Tomb series receives a lot of gushing praise (quite rightly) for its intricate and complex depictions of relationships and love, sexuality and gender. But something I've seen less praise for (though I'm sure it exists) is the incredibly rich depiction of what an urban environment during warfare and civil strife looks like.

One of the unfortunate facts of urban warfare is that civilians are almost inevitably present, even in the most dire circumstances. Take the Bakhmut as an example. Despite months of fighting, thousands lived on in the city and region right to at least the very closing moments. This is despite the city being essentially entirely destroyed.

New Rho in Nona the Ninth feels incredibly lived in. The city supposedly contains ~9 million people, and you can believe it. There are all sorts of people, there are different groups and socio-economic areas, people have different responses to the situation they find themselves under, but they all living complex lives. This goes well beyond the key characters or even the side characters, but is captured by the existence of a barter economy, background vigilante and militia groups, the daily grind of workers desperately seeking ad hoc jobs.

They walked alongside all the other workers - the ones who didn't get picked up in the morning in the worker vans, or didn't have a job that merited a worker van, or didn't have a job but lived in hope - and they all trudged slowly through the street in clusters, parting only when a truck ground through, the driver leaning on the horn if someone didn't move out of the way quick enough.

I reckon some of the super fans here could pull out all sorts of fascinating little details in the world building of New Rho to discuss here.

The Irish Troubles produced a number of iconic photos showing the dichotomy of urban conflict amongst civilians.

Perhaps one of the best parallels would be life in Palestine, particularly the Gaza Strip. The Gaza Strip, with a population of >2 million has lived under blockade for many years with frequent intervention/incursion by Israel.

One of the interesting parallels with Palestine is the plethora of different actors and resistance groups, just a fractious and secretive as New Rho's Blood of Eden and other militants, and who often seem to spend more time fighting themselves and civilians rather than their main enemy.

The Marxist-Leninist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) gave us the splinter groups PFLP-SC (Special Command), PFLP-GC (General Command), PFLP-EO (Executive Order), Palestinian Popular Struggle Front, Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine, Popular Revolutionary Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and had complex intertwined relations with groups like the Black September Organisation, Palestinian Liberation Front, Arab Liberation Front, Palestinian National Salvation Front, the Abdul Nidal Organisation, Fatah al-Intifada, Vanguard for the Popular Liberation War - Lightning Forces, and dozens of others. On the Islamist side there is similarly a plethora of groups, from Hamas, to Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Sheikh Omar Hadid Brigade (Islamic State in Gaza), the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, the Army of Islam, and Jund Ansar Allah. It's almost comical to write them out.

New Rho itself is home to many refugees and "re-settled" peoples, which is somewhat reminiscent of Palestinians and the related conflict spilling into Lebanon, Jordan and other neighbouring areas. The complexity and number of groups involved skyrocket.

Rarely is war as simple as "Good Guys vs. Bad Guys" or even "Bad Guys vs. Bad Guys." There is almost always a vast number of interest groups and competing organisations at stake, even in some of the more black and white wars like WW2. Muir just hits this nail right on the head in my opinion.

You could also make similar parallels to the Syrian Civil War, which has an equally complex mix of militants and groups. Despite all of that, of course, life still goes on. School kids still attend school, even in bullet ridden buildings.

Typically the books I've read depicting a place under siege or at war (at least in sci-fi / fantasy) have a focus on the main characters leading the war effort. There may be issues of water or food shortages, but they're largely somewhat abstract political complications being dealt with by key rulers or the like. Often times war is simply sanitised completely (think Star Wars), or it is portrayed through a military lens, or when it deals with civilians it focuses on the destruction and death of civilian life.

I just found Nona wonderful in depicting the mundanity, the boredom, the regularity of life in a war zone, as well as the sudden shocks of change and turmoil and fear, and then as well the glimpses of joy and pleasure that humans still experience. I'm just really quite blown away by Tamsin Muir, and I wonder if she had a specific conflict as inspiration for her writing here.

The Book of Tribulations and Portents of the Last Hour, Book 54, Hadith 8

Abdullah b. Safwan reported that Hafsa told him that she had heard Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying:

An army would attack this House in order to fight against the inhabitants of this House and when it would be at the plain ground the ranks in the centre of the army would be sunk and the vanguard would call the rear flanks of the army and they would also be sunk and no flank would be left except some people who would go to inform them (their kith and kin). A person (who had been listening to this hadith from Abdullah b. Safwan) said: I bear testimony in regard to you that you are not imputing a lie to Hafsa. And I bear testimony to the fact that Hafsa is not telling a lie about Allah's Apostle (ﷺ).

Adamawa 2023: Gov Fintiri Finally Reacts to Inconclusive Nature of Guber Poll

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate and incumbent governor of Adamawa, Umaru Fintiri, said he is not alarmed by the inconclusive nature of the state's gubernatorial election. As reported by the Vanguard, Fintiri stated this in an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, March 22. The incumbent said he is confident that God is on his side, and he's assured that the people of Adamawa will make the right decision and vote for his re-election. Breaking: Nasarawa State Governor, Sule loses son

The Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr Abdullahi A. Sule has loss his son, Alhaji Hassan AA Sule at the early hours of Friday.

Vanguard gathered that Hassan died after a brief illness.Meanwhile, condolences have started pouring in following the demise of the governor’s son.

In a condolence message signed by the Publisher of Eggonnews, Matthew Kuju and made available to Vanguard in Lafia at about 5.30 am, reads: “it is with pains in our hearts to learn of the passage of your dear son, Hassan. No doubt, it is very painful when a father has to bury a son, but only Allah can explain such happenings.

“We pray May Allah raise him among the righteous and grant him aljannah Firdausi, and may Allah grant the family the fortitude to bear this painful demise.

In a similar message, the Honourable member representing Lafia North Constituency at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly Hon. Barr. Muhammed Ibrahim Alkali said he received with great shock the passing of the Son of His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State Alh. Hassan Abdullahi Sule.

In a Condolence message to the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, His Excellency Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, the Lawmaker described the death of the governor’s Son as a colossal loss not only to Nasarawa State but the Nation at large.

THE COMPANIONS OF THE PROPHET (PBUH) : Adiyy bin Hatem (r.a.)

It is possible for those who adopt a cause without evidence and without investigation, and only by imitation to hesitate and even to give up the cause in the face of small problems they will encounter in the future. It is seen that those who adopt a cause by thinking and reasoning embrace their ideals, and display more perseverance and determination for it than they have shown for the wrong causes before.

The history of Islam is full of many examples of this truth. Adiyy bin Hatem is one of them; he earned a distinguished position among the Companions after accepting Islam.

After the death of Hatem at-Ta'i, who was famous for his generosity, his son, Adiyy became the leader of the tribe of Tayy; he was a Christian. He was firmly adherent to his religion. He became very concerned in terms of his own belief when the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) declared the cause of Islam. He could never accept it for the Arabs who had been following their ancestors for many years to follow such a newcomer. He became very upset, left the Arabian Peninsula and went to Anatolia, where Christianity was widespread. According a narration, he even went to Istanbul and talked to the Kaiser.

After a while, he was tired of wandering idly and said to himself:

"Why do not I go to Muhammad? If he is lying, I will notice him. If he is telling the truth, I will be subject to him."

After this thought, he went to the Messenger of Allah. The Companions were very surprised when they saw that Adiyy came suddenly. The following conversation took place between him and the Messenger of Allah:

“O Adiyy! Become a Muslim so that you will be saved.” (The Messenger of Allah repeated this sentence three times.)

"I have my religion."

"I know your religion better than you do."

"How do you know my religion better than I do?"

"Yes. Are not you from Raqusiya? Do you not take one-fourth of the booty of your tribe? It is not lawful for you in your religion."

After this conversation, Adiyy disappeared again. There were spiritual storms in his inner world. Hesitations began about accepting Islam. About a month later, Adiyy met the Messenger of Allah again. The Messenger of Allah said,

"I know what keeps you from accepting Islam. You think, 'Only those who are weak, those who are not strong accept this religion. Besides, Arabs have already alienated such people.' Do you know Hira?

"I have not seen it, but I have heard about it."

"I swear by Allah, in whose power is my soul that Allah will definitely complete this religion and make it dominant. A woman will come from Hira alone without needing anybody and circumambulate the Kaaba. The treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz will be captured. "

"The treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz?"

"Yes, the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz. Wealth will be so abundant that wealthy men will not be able to find poor people to help. "

Years later, while narrating the conversation between him and the Messenger of Allah, Adiyy said,

"I witnessed a lonely woman coming from Hira circumambulate the Kaaba. I was the vanguard of the military unit that took over the treasures of Kisra. I swear by Allah that the third will absolutely take place because the Messenger of Allah stated it. "[  Usdul-Ghaba, 3: 393.  ]

Adiyy bin Hatem became a Muslim in 630 AD with the encouragement of his sister, Safana bint Hatem, who had become a Muslim before him. Although he was with the Messenger of Allah for only two years, he reported several hadiths.

Hz. Adiyy was very generous just like his father Hatem at-Ta'i. The Companions respected him a lot. When he visited the Messenger of Allah, the Messenger of Allah would treat him a lot.

He was very affectionate. He treated even ants with compassion. He gave food to ants saying, "These are our neighbors. They have a right, too."

He was so keen on worshipping that he said, "I wait for each prayer time with enthusiasm."

When the incidents of apostasy occurred during the caliphate of Hz. Abu Bakr, he served the caliph loyally and worked with might and main to prevent his tribe from joining the apostates.  

He fought heroically as an assistant to Khalid bin Walid in the Iraqi battles. He fought self-sacrificingly in the wars of Qadisiyya and Mihran under the command of Abu Ubayda.

He was far away from his own tribe for a long time. Once, he came to Madinah during the caliphate of Hz. Umar. Supposing that Umar did not recognize him, He said to Hz. Umar, "O Amir of the believers! Did you not recognize me?" Hz. Umar answered,

"How do I not recognize you? You have received grace from Allah Almighty. When many people left the right path, you stayed in the right path. When many people denied, you confirmed the truth. When they betrayed, you acted loyally. When they turned their backs, you resisted."[Isaba, 2: 468.]

Adiyy bin Hatem, who did not like to be praised, said, "O Umar! Enough!" Thus, he interrupted Hz. Umar.

Adiyy bin Hatem had a long life that he spent doing distinguished services and died in Kufa in 68 H.

May Allah make us attain his intercession!

What is the importance of love for the Prophet’s Companions in the religion, as some groups are considered aberrant because of their enmity towards some Companions?

It is essential to explain the place of the Honorable Companions in our religion, the importance of affection towards them and how Muslims should evaluate the controversies between some Companions.

The Honorable Companions became thorough inheritors and representatives of the Messenger of Allah (pbuh). They walked on the right path, without tending to the right or to the left at all. Each of them became a guide, a leader on the paths leading to Allah. Whomever of them one follows, s/he will arrive in the right path, bliss and salvation. For, Allah bestowed upon them a feature, an attractiveness which attracts people to righteousness. They are elite and diligent characters with high ethics, whom Allah the Glorious loved in the assembly of souls and made them a halo around the Prophet.

All of the companions without any exception were honored with the Prophet’s conversation. Their souls, minds, hearts, consciousnesses and all of their emotions were educated by Prophet and they grew up with his knowledge. In other words, they directly benefited from the Sun like flowers on the southern sides of mountains and talked with him. And the Muslim generations who came after them benefited from not the Sun itself but from its light, like flowers on the northern sides of mountains.

The great secret behind the fact that no saints (walis) who came after them can reach their level must be sought in that great difference. They witnessed the arrival of revelation in person. They saw angel Gabriel (Jibril) many times in the form of Dihya (a Companion). They witnessed a lot of miracles. They were the first people to listen to the Quran, sent to lead people to the light, righteousness and bliss. They received the honor of being the first students of the Quran. They learnt the glorious realities in it from the Prophet. They made the Quran sovereign over their hearts, minds, souls and lives. They reached such knowledge, abundance, righteousness, loyalty, self-renunciation and generosity which no other people could reach after them. Their glances were filled with exemplary lessons, their ideas with knowledge and wisdom, and their hearts with divine love. Neither the world could make them its captives, nor could the beauty and attractiveness of Heaven capture them. They desired not the boons of the world and hereafter, but the Creator of those boons Himself and they found Him. They led their lives with the honor of being servants merely to Allah.

All of them are in the group that reached salvation. All of them are honored with being “Companions”. Allah and His Messenger were consent with all of them and elevated them by extolling them.

Allah the Glorious states that He is consent with the Honorable Companions and He prepared infinite boons and bliss for them in the chapter at-Tawbah as follows:

“The vanguard (of Islam)- the first of those who forsook (their homes) and of those who gave them aid, and (also) those who follow them in (all) good deeds,- well-pleased is God with them, as are they with Him: for them hath He prepared gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein for ever: that is the supreme felicity.” (at-Tawbah, 100)

In the same chapter, Allah the Glorious extols the Honorable Companions stating that they fought for the sake of Islam, sacrificing their lives and properties and gives them the good news with blessings and grants:

“But the Apostle, and those who believe with him, strive and fight with their wealth and their persons: for them are (all) good things: and it is they who will prosper. Allah hath prepared for them gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein: that is the supreme felicity.” (at-Tawbah, 88-89)

There are a lot of verses sent about the Companions. We find it sufficient to quote the two verses above as examples.

The Messenger of Allah extolled the Honorable Companions with a lot of hadiths, telling his people about the greatness of their honorability and the fact that they were accepted in the presence of Allah and he threatened the ones who slandered them. We present some of these hadiths below:

“My Companions are just.”

“If one loves a Companion, he does so because he loves me. If one becomes an enemy to them, he does so because he is an enemy to me.”

The following hadith reveals that it is impossible to feel enmity towards any of the Honorable Companions and that all of them, without any exception, are torches of righteousness:

“My Companions resemble stars. Whomever of them you follow, you will find the right path.” (Ajluni, 1/132)

Although all heavenly bodies which are characterized as “stars” are equal, there are some differences between them in terms of size. In this sense, of course there are differences among the Companions in terms of virtues and levels. Some of them were honored with the choice of Islam earlier than others and excelled them in service. Some of them excelled others in terms of justice and management. Another one was superior in mildness and generosity, while another one advanced in knowledge and braveness.

Now you can conclude what a great evil it is to talk about those stars of righteousness offensively, to love some of them and blacken the others.

It must be kept in mind that lots of religious realities about worship and moral values were taught by those Companions who were subject to unfair attacks. Attacking them is considered attacking Islam.

Yes, it means to attack Islam itself to try to blacken those elite Companions of the Last Prophets, those understanding collocutors of his, those elite people, even the lowest of whom the greatest saint cannot reach, to the thawabs of whom more is being added with the every thawab gained by every Muslim until the Day of Judgment because of the rule “One who causes something is like the one who performs it” in Islam.

Those who overstepped their limits by daring to judge that elite group who shed their blood for the sake of Islam and by finding one of them right while criticizing the other cannot dishonor those stars of righteousness; they can only prepare their own disastrous end with it.

Besides, the people, whom they dare to judge, are the outstanding ones of the Companions. Some of them were already given the good news of deserving to enter Heaven while alive. The Quran and our Prophet extolled those people whom they backbite.

Another strong proof to our argument is this: As it is known, Sahih Bukhari is accepted by both the followers of Ahl as-Sunnah and Shia as the most significant book after the Quran. Both sides agree on it. There are many hadiths about belief, worship and high ethics narrated by both sides of those conflicting Companions in Sahih Bukhari. Islamic jurisprudents and all Muslim community accepted all of them without any discrimination. People who narrated those hadiths did not take the conflicts about the Companions into consideration while narrating them. They did not say, “This hadith is not true because it is narrated by that Companion who opposed to Hz. Ali or Hz. Muawiyah, which would be wrong.”

In that case, we come to this conclusion; all mujtahids, Islamic jurisprudents, hadith narrators respected and loved all of the Companions, and accepted the hadiths they narrated from the Prophet as the basic of the religion; without taking those conflicts into consideration. So, how could we dare to regard those conflicts, which those significant people did not mind, as problems and trouble?

By the way, it is also necessary to pay attention to this important reality:

Allah tells believers to refrain from prejudice in the chapter of al-Hujurat as follows:

“Would any of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother?” (al-Hujurat, 49/12)

Allah the Glorious informs us with that verse that backbiting a believer is as disgusting as eating a dead person’s flesh and it is a kind of behavior which is not appropriate for a Muslim. What if the one that a believer backbites is one of the Companions, and an outstanding one of them? You could now think of its danger.

Abdullah b. Safwan reported that Hafsa told him that she had heard Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying:

An army would attack this House in order to fight against the inhabitants of this House and when it would be at the plain ground the ranks in the centre of the army would be sunk and the vanguard would call the rear flanks of the army and they would also be sunk and no flank would be left except some people who would go to inform them (their kith and kin). A person (who had been listening to this hadith from Abdullah b. Safwan) said: I bear testimony in regard to you that you are not imputing a lie to Hafsa. And I bear testimony to the fact that Hafsa is not telling a lie about Allah's Apostle (ﷺ).
