My 1000 point Vanguard Detachment list for tonights game.
Warlord: captain in termi armour (‘deep blade’ enhancment (gives the unit infiltrate)
Lieutenant in phobos
10x phobos infiltrators
10x terminators
5x heavy intercessors
1x balistus dreadnought
The goal is to use ‘guerrilla tactics’ on terminators to bounce them around. Kill a unit, fall back, teleport, kill a unit, repeat… I’m playing knights, so I’ve kitted them out with chainfists…
Infiltrate both terminators and phobos up the board to deny centre. Heavy intercessors and balistus to hold home field.

Getting ready to make a second Joytoy Raven Guard!
Joytoy has actually come out with Raven Guard figures however I bought this figure before they did that, they also don't offer them in the phobos armor.
Nice thing is using the black primer then just having to paint the details...

I've read dozens of Ultramarine books and here are some constantly repeating tropes that I fucking love:
(or lets make a drinking game or a bingo out of it I dunno. I want a book where every single one of these happens 😅)
A space marine going surprised pikachu face when he realises that Marneus Calgar lied about something important.
Someone calls Sicarius reckless. Bonus points if he just took his helmet off.
Marneus Calgar complains about “weak propaganda”.
Mikael Fabian has to be rescued/needs to evacuate his troops.
Tigurius goes “you know how it is”, no one knows how it is (or what is going on in general)
Torias Telion fucks with Captain Galenus by going “pop goes the weasel” and showing up from nowhere, insults his security detail and then leaves.
Uriel Ventris cries.
Someone gets stabbed/impaled by a flag and everyone cheers.
“His gene-seed couldn't be recovered”
Agemman gets mentioned but never does anything/appears in the book.
A space marine fondly remembers something fucked up he/some other spacemarine did as a kid.
Everybody yelling their captains name (or Guilliman)
No actual tactics were ever used to win the battle and the commander stood in the vanguard the whole time just hacking and slashing.

Eramis being so suspicious of the Vanguard giving her humane treatment and legal rights is funny but also like. Idk if it’s the group that sent a space marine to kill you one time and your friend’s kid who’s going through a midlife crisis to duel you after that. I would also be asking about what weapons I’m allowed in a fair trial.

My Exorcists Vanguard marine. So happy to see my favorite Chapter in Space Marine 2. If Doomguy were to make a Space Marine chapter it would probably be these guys.

So if you've been following me for a while you'll know that I've been wanting to make a warhammer 40k army but with Halo Covenant models as a proxy. I was originally wanting to make them a proxy of the T'au but I found issues with figuring out Drone tokens, base sizes (specifically for elites), and invuln saves for things like shield Jackals. Well I'm happy to announce that I finally found a faction due to a new release in rules including rules that allow Imperium factions to bring deathwatch space marines. And here is my choice in faction shown by the Combat Patrol.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I chose the Adeptus mechanicus as, while there are some issues (not restricted to but including struggling to pick if Skitarii Vanguard or Rangers should be the Jackals since they both have a 5+ invuln), they by far have the best array and arguably fitting themes around them. I have a full 1500 point list that involves a deathwatch squad of elites, skorpius disintigrators as wraiths, Kastelan Robots as hunters, etc. Also I apologize for the shit photoshop

From Ashes: A Salamander Story
So I've started a fic set immediately after Vulkan was revealed to the Salamanders, focusing on a Salamander squad who is acting as protection for a Iterator who is trying to diplomatically incorporate a reasonably advanced Terran world into the Imperium and I just want to yell about it a bit.
FIRST UP THE SQUAD:
Sergeant Shoen'tal Agonn: A skilled tactician, Agonn is everything a Salamander strives to be. He is brave, selfless, and willing to die for his men. He is plagued by every soldier he has lost, and keeps a list of those lost under his command attached to his armor. Battle-Brother Mulbakaan Vel'gan: The squad's second in command and a sturdy defender. In his first deployment, he held a site of contention by himself against a swarm of tyranids until the rest of his company could arrive by making effective use of choke-points and explosives. He has a giant scar that stretches from his left ear to his chin from one of those tyranids that got too close. Techmarine Par'dak Numatar: A genius engineer who had his tongue shot out by an Ork. He has special gauntlets that are much more dexterous than usual space marine armor, basically functioning as a second skin, that both let him communicate in sign language and also give him better manual dexterity when it comes to working on machines. Battle-Brother Zarton Numatar: Par'dak's brother and a master of offense. There is only one thing he loves more than getting to test his brother's inventions, and that's being a loyal servant of the emperor. He is passionately devoted to The Emperor and carrying out his will, and sees every order given to him as a blessing. Epistolary Rodondiel Vallatar: A skilled improviser, Vallatar is well-known among his brothers for being able to think on his feet, something that has saved the squad more than once. Agonn fully trusts him without hesitation, and any suggestion the Librarian gives will be accepted without question. Battle-Brother Ze'phast Zytal: The largest of the group, Zytal has an "I could do this all night" approach to war, and has no problem with extended combat. In fact, he prefers it, as his extreme stamina lets him outlast most opponents. Battle-Brother Kronak Tu'reth: The big guy with the flamer, Tu'reth is almost as hardy as Zytal. He and Zytal often have competitions during battles to see who can go the whole fight without a moment's rest. Vanguard Vorpaar Ven'nerr: The dude with the flaming hammer and the squad's most vicious fighter. Unlike the others, Ven'nerr is quite in favor of starting fights, and is rather un-Salamander-like when it comes to taking pleasure in destruction. His behavior occasionally has put innocents at risk, something Agonn has had to discipline him for. Apothecary Ba'tsen Praetor: The squad doctor with a terrible bedside manner. Praetor is concerned first and foremost with getting his patients back to fighting fit as soon as possible, and while he is not heartless, he is more than happy to use less than pleasant measures to get them up and moving faster. Neophyte Vel'zan Vallal: The young kid on the squad who is hoping to soon earn the promotion to Battle-Brother. He is in awe of his squad mates and strives to embody the ideals of the Salamanders, almost to the point of naivety. A bit of a risk-taker, it has taken him a bit longer to reach Battle-Brother than others, but he is hoping to show his dependability to his new squad. Iterator Ambrosius Corinant: A no-nonsense diplomat whose ability as a social chameleon is slightly off-putting to the Astartes who protect him, but his openness and bluntness with them has earned their respect.
THE MISSION!
The squad gets sent down to the planet Mimas to talk to the local emperor/king/etc to get them to join the Imperium. They seem eager and willing but there always seem to be something wrong or something that is putting off a full agreement. Meanwhile, up on the orbiting ship, the Navigator is losing his mind as it is corrupted by Chaos originating from somewhere beneath the planet's capital. He goes on a murder spree and essentially maroons the ship. Down on the planet, negotiations are falling apart, and it takes a nosedive when the Iterator is found murdered. Due to the actions of the Navigator, communication with the ship is impossible and the squad attempt to discover who killed the Iterator while waiting for orders. Their investigation is interrupted by the source of Chaos breaking out from beneath the city and attempting to take over the ship as a means of escaping the planet that has been its prison for countless millennia.
....I may have a list of how everyone who DOES die is going to die.....it might be the first thing that I wrote lol

So as none of you may know, I’m a HUGE Warhammer 40k fan
So of course I bought Space Marine 2 (I main Heavy with the Bolter and Plas Pistol)
Yall let me tell you how much I LOVE STRABAN OMGGGAAWWWDDDDD!
You cannot tell me this mf ISNT a son of Ferrus Manus (my fav legion second only to the Blood Angels), he is blunt and critically logical, and Decimus (the Vanguard) pokes a bit of fun at him for fighting in complete silence just to have Straban say “Keeps my aim steady”. Also I love how he prefaces his rousing speech with “Engage standard Morale Boost. For the Emperor!” He’s so silly ohmaigoooosssshhhhhh
That is why, chat, I’ve made my heavy both an Iron Hand and an Iron Warrior (yes I’m a simp for the 4th shut up)

Two old GW 6mm metal land raiders and a bunch of Vanguard Miniatures totally-not-breachers infantry stands, (plus some vanguard charachters painted up as a librarian and chaplain for character stand support) painted as salamanders space marines by me. Intended to use with epic armageddon, though I may one day pull out some LI with them.

My first termie! Sort of.
I managed to find some time to sit down and paint. I had found out about Emperor's Spears last night and wanted to give them a try.
Their paint scheme varies. I like the art that has their armor looking like a much bluer Grey Knights steel. I wanted to do that, but non metallic. And I also gave the sponge stippling a go.
For the color, I think more grey with blue would be better. He could pass more for an Ultramarine or Crimson Fist. And for the stippling, I see the merit in that technique. Though I do see how you need to control it because it's easy to overdo it, as I did in some areas.
I added the picture of the shield because I was pretty pleased with it.
If you're thinking this is a GW Terminator, then you are wrong. This guy is actually from the Socratis Vanguard line by Station Forge - who do amazing Space Marine proxies. I think if you popped an Aquila on the chest, it'd be much more deceiving.

Got a stalker bolter for my joytoy! I love the old crusade/heresy era bolters.
My headcanon is that this one was used by one of the raven guard survivors at the drop site massacre. Who proceeded to use it through the heresy until his death, at which point it was placed into a vault with other gear and relics from that time. Before being picked up by a primaris marine millenia later.

We traveled....
We saw.....
We played....
We absolutely loved it!
4th edition Age Of Sigmar has left us feeling awesome! Our hopes and dreams continue to live on for Age Of Sigmar, whereas the ones for 40k are dying off (more on that another time...)
Whilst at the holy site of all warhammer, where hobbyists and Wargamers gather in a horde like fashion, we had the chance to play 30 minutes of 4th edition AoS and and FULL HOUR of Spearhead! Below you'll find our opinions!
4TH EDITION:
As mentioned we play 30 minutes of this in teams of 2. Our two opponents were absolutely lovely during this game and very friendly. We took the side of the stormcast whilst they got to use the Skaven.
The Models
Warhammer Community does not do these models justice at all. They are much better looking in person!! The stormcast have been given a fresh look, bringing them further away from looking like the Sigmar equivalent of space marines whilst the Skaven have been given some love this edition and have better looking, well, everything.
The models that stood out amongst the rest for both factions in the Skaventide box are:
- The Lord-Vigilant on Gryph Stalker
- Clawlord on Gnawbeast
Both of these are striking centre pieces for both of the respective factions and their armies. The supporting heroes for both are good, but these.... These are another level.
The Gameplay
The most important thing to mention here is that you can REACT to your opponent during their turn, making a turn rather interesting. While this was kind of a thing in 3rd edition with certain command abilities in certain phases, this has been expanded and improved upon, even allowing players to invoke the power of the gods through their priests in the enemy hero phase! Certain heroes also have the ability to react to themselves or friendly units around them creating a bit more of a synergy between outlying heroes that operate alone and the main forces.
Most of the core system remains the same as the previous edition, with changes to certain parts of each phase to make things easier and simpler. Each phase is now colour coded to allow players to easily find abilities that are usable in those phases.
In person the new warscrolls for each model/unit work well as well as being easier to read and find the abilities you are looking for. Ward saves are now a keyword so these will be found at the bottom of your warscroll.
One staple of 3rd edition may not be in the new edition. Heroic actions. These were game changers if used at the right time, however when we played 4th edition, there was no mention of heroic actions anywhere. It remains to be seen if these will return or not.
SPEARHEAD:
This was purely amazing. We cannot fault the spearhead game system at all. Literally there is nothing we can find bad with this.
We were able to play out 2 battle rounds in the time, and once again were in teams of 2. This time however we got to use the Maggotkin Of Nurgle Spearhead versus the Sylvaneth Spearhead. Both forces are literally the contents of their respective Vanguard boxes, in fact every army that was used to teach Spearhead was a Vanguard box....
Now, we are very excited if Spearhead gives any indication at the rules for the armies in the main game (we would hope there is some similarity between them)
Maggotkin didn't have contagion points in Spearhead and could only gain disease points for the ARMY. These were used to inflict mortal wounds to a unit that your in combat with, by rolling a number of D6 equal to your total disease points (max 7) and each 4+ was a mortal wound.
Sylvaneth had the ability to teleport a single unit across the board for free. This hurt. Teleporting Kurnoth Hunters is not fun for the opponent.
The game itself is highly tactical and is a good middle ground between Warcry and AoS. The uncertainty of which battle tactics you may have for a turn combined with how balanced the spearheads were, make this a game that simply comes down to a players tactical ability. Not army strength or ridiculous rules, but a players tactical mind. Spearhead is also brilliant in the sense that the random battle tactics teach you to be more tactical in your decision making, as each card contains a battle tactic and a command ability. Now you have to choose between these, either sacrificing a VP in order to kit your opponent harder, or maybe sacrificing a unit in order to score a VP.
You don't ever reveal your battle tactics to your opponent until you activate a command ability from one, or your score the battle tactic, meaning neither player will know what the other is trying to achieve at any one time. Though play with these cards enough and you'll soon learn from heart which your opponent will be trying to achieve through watching how they move their forces around the board. This aside, Spearhead is definitely something new, fun and definitely outclasses the 40k variant of it, Combat Patrol.
THE ROUND UP:
If you do love Age Of Sigmar as much as us, the new edition is for you. Whether or not you play Stormcast or Skaven the Skaventide box is definitely a worthwhile investment as this contains literally everything you could ever need for AoS to begin with including the matched play rules for the first season, a whole book dedicated to spearhead and the AoS rulebook, terrain and all the accessories needed to play Spearhead. Though we do see Spearhead taking off very quickly, so expect the decks, battle mats and terrain for this to be released separately at some point.
If your are not sure on 4th edition, then play Spearhead. Spearhead allows you to take your current Vanguard box out for a game so you can see what your army does, and play the core concepts of the new edition without buying into anything (let's be honest, someone you know will have bought the box...)
Lastly. We noticed a little thing at the top of the warscrolls we had to use for 4th edition, "July 2024"
This seems to be a potential release window.... (with the store Dawnbringer campaigns ending towards the back end of June and the new 2 week preorder's we are expecting early July)

I was always under the impression that the Custodes were the Emperor's special boys made just for himself and that the reason why Space Marines have so many limitations (in terms of low survivability, only made from pubescent males and having significant genetic flaws) was because in his Grand SchemeTM, he was going to "Ol' Yeller" the Astartes (which he somehow knew had a 50-50 chance of betraying him) once the galaxy was fully conquered
For the Emperor to essentially hamstring the 20-21 thoroughbreds before the race and inbreed them while giving himself the clearly superior and more easily accessible workhorses makes a lot of sense, if we think the Marines were a temporary thing (a "tool", as it were). If he truly wanted to keep them forever as the eternal vanguard of his empire, then why wouldn't they be able to quickly replenish their losses or have exploitable weaknesses? If he's able to make better troops to act as his own personal guard and elite strike force, then why wouldn't he make the "standard" troops better?
So for the Custodes to be Built BetterTM, be so fanatically loyal and lacking so much individuality that they're basically meat-based automatons, be able to massively overpower a planned obsolescent and inferior version of super-soldiers AND have double the potential population to draw from makes A LOT of sense---if we believe the Emperor to be an arrogant, short-sighted dumbass of a wannabe space tyrant who really thought himself an absolute 8th Dimensional Chess wizard playing Checkers against the universe, then got Surprise Pikachu'd when the tools betrayed him before he could betray them
Huge W for Fabius Bile, who was apparently able to see through Emps' bullshit when he told Malcador it was "impossible" to have Primarchettes and to just take him at his word (being that he was Mr Big Dick Eugenicist Extraordinaire)
