Teen Yellowjackets Niche Specific NJ Headcanons:
Watching Yellowjackets has me reflecting on my own teenage hood and I grew up in NJ, so therefore I constantly think way too much about dumb shit they could do thatâs specific to growing up in New Jersey and thus this list was born:
Growing up Nat was a CEO catholic (Christmas and Easter only). Her parents donât really believe, but thereâs enough Catholic guilt there from their childhoods that they feel like they should go for the big holidays. They stop going when her dad dies.
Lottie was informally adopted by an elderly Italian couple who owns a deli. In middle school she started going there nightly for dinner when her parents were out of town, and the owners were so confused/disgusted that they always made sure she had a meal free of charge, even though she could pay. Even into high school they give her extra food, she usually pawns it off on Van or Nat, or sometimes Shauna if her momâs working the night shift at the hospital.
Van worked at a pizza place. She hates it, but they let her take slices home for free and she likes that it feels like one of those jobs a character would work in an 80s coming of age movie.
Jackieâs parents have a beach house in LBI. The soccer team takes it over for one week every summer
Shauna likes to drive down Ocean Ave late at night listening to her mixtape that she made specifically for those drives (this basically a right of passage for teenagers who grew up by the shore, myself included).
There is infighting amongst the team about which is better: Dunkin Donuts or Wawa. They had to put a moratorium on the topic because things were getting too personal.
Van looks up to Kevin Smith and loves Clerks because he was also from a small town in NJ and was able to get his movie made.
Tai is ready and willing to kick anyoneâs ass who tries to defend Pineapple on pizza, she thinks itâs a crime against pizza and it should be outlawed. Jackie is a pineapple on pizza enjoyer, this causes problems.
They all live in central Jersey and fight with opposing teams at tournaments and matches about whether or not that section of the state exists.
Nat is a transplant from North Jersey and they all give her shit for her accent that she just canât shake.
Misty is an NJ transit defender, even though the service barely functions.
Shauna is banned from watching the Giants and Yankees because she has anger issues and spends their entire game yelling at the tv.
Nat and subsequently Van (Nat-Van childhood best friends you are very dear to me) call it Taylor Ham, whereas the rest of the team calls it Pork Roll. Each side has attempted to convert the other, but have yet to be successful.
They were all devastated when Action Park at Vernon Valley closed because it meant they could no longer get shitty cheap beer without being carded.

Jack Jenkins at RNS:
(RNS) â A diverse group of Christians is throwing support behind Vice President Kamala Harrisâ White House bid, organizing fundraisers and Zoom calls in hopes of helping catapult the Democrat to victory in November â and, they say, reclaiming their faith from Republicans in the process. Their efforts come on the heels of similar campaigns aimed at specific constituency groups, such as the recent âWhite Dudes for Harrisâ Zoom call that featured celebrities and grabbed headlines. John Pavlovitz, a liberal-leaning Christian author and activist, was on that call when he hatched the idea for a Christian-centric version and texted his friend Malynda Hale, a singer, actress and fellow activist. âWe had a conversation about how, specifically on the Democratic side of the political spectrum, you donât hear a lot of people talking about their faith,â Hale told Religion News Service in an interview. âWe wanted people to know that there are progressive Christians, there are Christians on the Democratic, left-leaning side, so that they didnât feel alone.â
The result was Christians for Kamala, a part-fundraiser, part-virtual roundtable livestreamed event on Monday (Aug. 12). Featured speakers cited their faith as they praised liberal policies and personally endorsed Harris â who recently entered the presidential race after President Joe Biden bowed out â and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Over the course of the nearly three-hour event, the group raised more than $150,000 for the Harris campaign, a number that has climbed to just shy of $200,000 in the days since. âItâs been really difficult to keep up with the flood of comments and connections that have been coming in,â said Pavlovitz, who said the only formal help he received from the Harris campaign was in setting up a donation system for fundraising. A number of Christian groups â including evangelicals, a constituency key to former President Donald Trumpâs base â have assembled similar calls in the lead up to next weekâs Democratic National Convention in Chicago. Most have had little to no assistance from the official Harris-Walz campaign, which, barely a month old, has yet to announced a dedicated faith outreach director. The emerging grassroots coalition vies not only to bolster Harris but also to push back on what organizers say is a false assumption that to be Christian is to be a Republican â or a supporter of former President Donald Trump.
[...] That diversity was on display during the Christians for Kamala call, which included a mix of faith leaders such as the Rev. Jacqui Lewis, of Middle Collegiate Church in New York City, and the Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr., head of the nonprofit Hip Hop Caucus; activists like environmentalist Bill McKibben and LGBTQ+ rights advocate Charlotte Clymer; commentators such as CNNâs Van Jones; and politicians, including New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker and Texas State Rep. James Talarico. The speakers linked their support for specific policies, such as working to blunt the impacts of climate change or passing immigration reform, to their faith and Christian Scripture. Some rebuked conservative Christianityâs ties to the GOP, calling it a form of Christian nationalism. âMy faith in Jesus leads me to reject Christian nationalism and commit myself to the project of a multiracial, multicultural democracy where we can all freely love God and fully love our neighbors,â said Talarico, a Presbyterian Church (USA) seminarian who has been vocal in his condemnation of Christian nationalism in his state. âThat same faith leads me to support Vice President Harris to be the next president of the United States.â
Although a member of a mainline denomination, Talarico was also a speaker on a separate âEvangelicals for Harrisâ Zoom call assembled on Wednesday evening. Organized by Faith Voters, a 501(c)4 organization, the effort was geared toward conservative Christians who have disproportionately sided with Trump. The call struck a different tone than Christians for Kamala: some speakers noted they had never endorsed a candidate before, and at least one pastor suggested he was risking friendships and relationships with his congregation by participating.
[...] The calls add to a slate of organizing efforts launched in recent days aimed at specific religious groups. Nearly 500 faith leaders have signed on to a letter endorsing Harris, a âLatter-day Saints for Harrisâ call was convened last week and multiple separate calls have been organized for Jewish Americans â including one on Thursday that targeted Jewish women and featured singer Barbra Streisand. A separate âCatholics for Kamalaâ call, facilitated in part by the Harris campaign, was also slated for this week but organizers rescheduled it until after the Democratic National Convention, citing scheduling conflicts. According to Pavlovitz, his group is already partnering with others, such as Catholics for Kamala, Christian Democrats of America and Vote Common Good. What form their collaborations take remains to be seen, but Pavlovitz said he is hopeful for whatever comes next.
Christians fed up with the religious rightâs monopolization of what it means to be a Christian rallied to support Kamala Harris on multiple recent calls, such as Christians For Harris and Evangelicals For Harris. Christians need to vote for the REAL Christian in the race, and thatâs Harris (and not antichrist Trump). #HarrisWalz2024

Patrice: The Movie - an insight to disabled rights and issues
So I want to bring genuine awareness to a documentary movie made about a woman in my town, and I see her all the time, the movie even involved some of my friends and many folks I attended a small college with, because we're a tiny county in New Jersey and literally everyone knows everyone here.
Patrice: The Movie. Available on Hulu.
This is a film that was released this week, and it's about disability in the USA, taking place right here in Mercer County, New Jersey, namely in Princeton and Hamilton.
The movie is about the Hamilton crossing guard, Patrice Jetter, a disabled woman who loves a disabled man, and the two cannot legally get married because they will lose their disability income if they do.
The movie explains the struggles of disability and how folks on it have multiple stipulations to remain on Medicaid and other services. It goes into the truth about a system working against the disabled, and it shows Patrice's life growing up as a disabled woman. If I got the setting right, the performance scenes were done at the Kelsey Theater Stage at Mercer County Community College, though it might also be the Princeton University stage.
And several good friends of mine, a good neighbor my mother fought the school board to keep her in school when they wanted her out for her disability, these people I've stood alongside both literally and figuratively, these people who I hang out with and attended MCCC with and ran clubs with and did so many things with, they appeared in this movie made about the struggles of marriage for disabled folks.
My entire county, Mercer County, is FULL of disabled people. Myself included.
And that they made a film to bring to light how the system works against disabled folks in every way, and it's being advertised on Hulu, is incredible.
Patrice is right. Disability was made for people in institutions, because all disabled people were in institutions until now.
Her friend is right. The government and society as a whole does not see us disabled people contributing in the way an abled person does, so we are deemed worthless.
The lawyer is honest, and outright claimed that the US system relies on disabled folks losing their disability pay so that they don't have to keep paying them, and this is their argument as to why it "costs" them to allow disabled marriage.
It doesn't actually cost anything to allow disabled marriage. It just means the government has to keep paying the disability benefits they're already paying for.
The film is an incredible insight to the struggles of disability as a whole, especially shown when Patrice's van breaks down, she looks for a new one, and to get a disability accessible van USED is at least $40,000. And because you can only make so much while disabled, Patrice couldn't do gofundme because this counted as income well over the limit to keep on SSI. And she had her pay taken away as a result.
This movie intends to bring so much light to the struggles of living as a disabled person, especially in regards to marriage rights. And it takes place right here in my town with people I legitimately know.
So go watch Patrice: The Movie on Hulu. Please. â€ïž

tuesday again 10/17/2023
started explaining why this one is a little lighter than last week's gallery wall behemoth bc of a uhhhh kind of dire week, personally and professionally speaking, but then realized when fic authors do that in front of chapters i don't actually care or require an excuse from them, im just delighted to have a new chapter.
listening
this is a deeply cheesy little folk song but the lyrics "man you name it and if we ainât got it: weâll get it" gave me a sensible chuckle.
youtube
now for a moment to expound upon houston: they truly have imported every possible food service establishment. the two chains i miss most from jersey, jersey mikes submarine sandwiches and 7-11 gas stations, are both here. i get that this is the fifth largest metro area in the US or whatever but both of these companies are SO niche. absolutely bonkers. spotify.
i think this started autoplaying after a playlist inspired by f/allout: new v/egas came on??

reading
i originally had a very mean-spirited graf about the utility of a pool in northwestern massachusetts and the kind of person who can comfortably lose $31k, but it is genuinely awful that there are no rules around zelle. that money goes into a black fucking hole and there's no way to get it back, which is not the case for any other kind of recognized money except cryptocurrency
Did we confront Gary Kruglitz [the pool contractor]? Yes we did. We marched right into his office and grilled him hard until he defeated us with a simple and probing question: What's a zelle? It defied belief, we quickly realized, that a man who had been trapped in technological amber since the Nixon era was running a cyberscam designed to come between us and our money out of an AOL account.

watching
Van Helsing (2004, dir. Sommers). this movie is horrible. this movie is terrific. i don't have anything to say about this movie bc i was distracted by equal opportunity tits and asses the entire time. the time of the âKate Beckinsale in a corsetâ movie genre is long over but GOD. watched with my sister bc it's leaving tubi soon
playing
one week i will have the energy to try New Thing but until i do itâs genshin. there's a poetry event that has terribly boring minigames, but the story quest has finally tied a bow on a piece of folkore we came across in the very first release so that was fun!
wrapping up some stuff in sumeru bc im running out of map pins, this game has done one of the things i hate most: progress-locking one extremely long and tedious collectible hunt (the music gates) behind another extremely long and tedious collectible hunt (the robots locked in the vines). the next time i see one of those little fucking budget koroks i am going to drop kick it into the sun. what the fuck is the circumference of teyvat anyway. it feels like we have explored so little of this planet's surface
i have graphics turned down pretty low bc of performance issues on my elderly laptop and this is still such a remarkably pretty game. look at this big estuary leading off into the distance

making
i wildly overextended myself this week, partially bc im trying to take advantage of this brief post-covid heightened immunity. lot of dinners. lot of late nights. on top of that BOTH of my siblings were in town for unrelated professional reasons this week :) no overlap so we did not have a nice fambly dinner :( but did have pretty okay separate dinners :) if they could learn to fucking communicate their trave plans and the number of peope that will be showing up at my home that would also be pretty okay >:(
one of the party games i played this week asked the question âwhat could you give a 40-minute PowerPoint presentation onâ and i started saying facts about the downfall of the penn central railroad and they very nicely let me continue saying facts about the downfall of the penn central railroad, the largest bankruptcy in US history until ENRON, until the round timer went off.
i have some thoughts about Train Guys and how it's very easy to fall into being a Train Guy, bc there's a very easy template to follow, and there's a lot of Train Guy content, and have i been doing this bc i actually like trains, or bc it's easy to listen to Well There's Your Problem on repeat bc it's familiar and comforting, or do i just really really really fucking hate flying?
who could possibly say.
mackintosh update: allowed herself to be scooped up by my brother (who she met at christmas and loves) but did NOT allow herself to be pet by the strangers in his company. did hang out in the middle of the floor observing tho. a regular little extroverted socialite!

Massive container ship loses power near NYCâs Verrazzano Bridge days after Baltimore Key Bridge disaster
A massive container ship lost power in the waters around New York City and came to a rest near the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge Saturday night â less than two weeks after failure on another massive cargo vessel caused it to collapse Baltimoreâs Francis Scott Key Bridge.
The US Coast Guard confirmed that its Vessel Traffic Service received a report that the 89,000-ton M/V Qingdao lost propulsion about 8:30 p.m. as it traversed Kill Van Kull waterway â the shipping lane between Staten Island and Bayonne, New Jersey.
An image shared on X by John Konrad, CEO of maritime-focused news outlet gCaptain, shows the 1,100-foot Qingdao floating uncomfortably close to the span that connects Brooklyn and Staten Island.

The Hamiltons and their Dutch Reformed wedding
[Text from Religions of the United States in Practice, Volume 1].Â
Alexander Hamilton and Elizabeth Schuyler were married on Thursday, December 14, 1780, in the largest parlor of her parentsâ Albany mansion, by a minister of the Dutch Reformed Church, as is recorded in the church registry of the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany (now First Church in Albany). Domine Eilardus Westerlo,* the second husband of Catharina Livingston Van Rensselaer (mother of Stephen Van Rensselaer III) had presided at Angelica and John Churchâs wedding at the Van Rensselaer Manor house north of Albany three years prior, but itâs unknown to me if he also was the minister for the Hamilton wedding.
Itâs easy to speculate that AH, at least, thought that he and Eliza would be married at Morristown that spring 1780 - it was not common to have an engagement lasting several months, and it would have made sense to get married before the campaign. Morristown had both Anglican and Presbyterian ministers. But Philip Schuyler poured cold water on that, stating in a letter that it would not be proper for them to be married at Morristown (and certainly, not to elope). In one of his letters to his fiancee AH complains that their engagement has lasted âan age,â and in another asks if she would still like to elope - itâs easy to see that he was going along with this delay to make her family happy.Â
If AH, who stated in 1771 that he was a member of the English Reformed Church, and then had ties through Rev. Knox to the Scotch Presbyterian Church, had mixed feelings about marrying in the Dutch Reformed tradition, it is unrecorded, although he is quoting from the Anglican marriage rite in his Oct 1780 letter to Eliza and his reference to ânuptial benedictionâ is from Anglicanism (I wonder if he grimaced when he read this totally non-poetic marriage rite below, compared to this one). He and Elizaâs first child, Philip, was baptized at the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany on Feb 11, 1782, with Philipâs grandparents as witnesses. And maybe AH really took the marital admonitions from this Liturgy (quoting Matthew 19) to heart [see page 3 below], as he supported folks only being allowed to divorce in the case of adultery (not for cruelty, not for abandonment), which remained NY state law until 1967.Â
So letâs talk cool facts about the Dutch Reformed tradition in America:Â
One book that every (Dutch American) colonial family was certain to possess was a kerkboekje (church book) - containing the Dutch metrical Psalter (with the Genevan tunes), the Heidelberg Catechism, and the Netherlands Liturgy - which they carried with them to church every Sunday. In more well-to-do families, every person had a kerboekje of his or her own. Because of their high birth rate, Dutch Americans were able to maintain their language and culture under the English regime for another century. Their culture was so tenacious that the French and German immigrants who later settled in the Hudson Valley adopted Dutch as their language rather than English. [Here I interject that Sojourner Truth, born into slavery in 1797 in Swartekill, NY, was a native Dutch speaker who likely never lost that accent - her âAinât I a Woman?â speech was translated to a Southern dialect.]
After a hundred years of English rule, however, Dutch eventually lost its place as the language of New York and New Jersey.
English language preaching was introduced in 1763, and the church book was translated to English in 1767, becoming the New York Liturgy that became standard across all English-speaking Dutch Reformed Churches in the world. (Services in Albany would stay in Dutch through most of the 1780s, although Iâm certainly hoping that their wedding wasnât in Dutch, a language that I donât believe we have any record of AH speaking.) This language certainly doesnât have the flourishes of the Anglican liturgy - itâs pretty appalling from a literary point of view.
We know that Dutch women enjoyed stronger inheritance rights and a more elevated status than did their English peers. In cases of Dutch-English intermarriage, the couples usually ended up Dutch Reformed.Â
Obviously not the Hamiltons, who after Philip would baptize their next three children in the Episcopal Church (the Anglican Church of the USA) in 1788; the Hamiltons would remain Episcopalians for generations. Angelica Schuyler Church also became Episcopalian (and is the one we actually have a contemporary record of going to church with her own and the Hamilton children, other than presumed attendance for baptisms and at the 1st inauguration of GW), which makes total sense since she married an Englishman. It also makes sense that AH would return to the religious liturgies of his youth [See my lengthy post about the Hamiltonsâ religious preferences.]
Getting back to the wedding stuff - although this researcher states that marriages were usually in church, I suspect that was for the plebs. Other books cite wealthy Dutch-Americans marrying at their homes, and then the bride wearing her finest outfit to church on the Sunday following her wedding. I have never found a reference to the Schuylers as a particularly pious family, nor have I found a reference to Philip Schuyler maintaining a pew for his family at the church in Albany. His youngest daughter does not cite him as an attendant, but as someone who kept private devotions and would sometimes recite a prayer service for the household (this was not at all uncommon).Â
Dutch American weddings were big, community, raucous affairs, almost everyone agrees. âComplaints about carousing and excessive drunkenness were not uncommon.â Philip and Catharine likely wanted to throw such a party!Â
Although they clearly wanted to witness and then throw a crazy party afterwards, Elizabethâs parents would have played no role in the wedding itself. There was no giving away of the bride as there is in the Anglican rite, where the father (usually) affirms that he is giving âthis woman to be married to this man.â Instead, this was a ceremony for two grown sober adults, choosing to live in the Married State, the Institution of God [see below]. Â
Anyway, getting to the real point: below are my not-good photos of the form of marriage of the New York Liturgy. Considering the dates of this liturgy, this is likely what was read to and said by the Hamiltons at their wedding. This has some typical Reformed catechesis - âGod will...judge and punish Whoremongers and Adulterers,â âResist all Wickedness,â âBelieve these Words of Christ, and be certain and assured, that our Lord God had joined you together in this holy State. You are therefore to receive, whatever befalls you therein with Patience and Thanksgiving, as from the Hand of God, and thus all Things will turn to your Advantage and Salvation.â It even starts off with such a great tone: âWhereas Married Persons are generally, by Reason of Sin, subject to many Troubles and Afflictions...â
A line that is unfamiliar to me from other Christian marriage rites:Â â[to the husband]..you are to labor diligently and faithfully, in the calling wherein God hath set you, that you may maintain your Household honestly, and likewise have something to give to the poorâ [my emphasis]. And I am unaware of any other major Christian marriage rite that so blatantly states St. Paulâs admonition to get married to avoid fornication. Calvinism can be so grim (my apologies to any Calvinists reading this, but not really).Â
If youâve made it this far, perhaps youâd also like to read about Dutch epithalamia. Epithalamia were wedding poems/songs - more specifically, for the marital bed/consummation - that were popular all the way from the classical period (they likely arose from the very elaborate wedding rituals of the past ancient Greeks/Balkan peoples) but largely disappeared in the late 19th century and have now been forgotten. There was quite a lot of literature/pamphlets/instruction manuals(?) about how to approach oneâs wedding night; epithalamia was the far more naughty/raucous cousin to this literature. But I donât think anyone really took some of this literature seriously:Â
...The chapter titled âBruytâ (Bride) highlights how respectable Protestants wished newly-weds the joys of a chaste Christian marriage and advocated the creation of a devotional atmosphere before becoming one flesh. Catsâs instructions about the wedding day cover various topics, such as the behaviour of the wedding guests, the bride and groomâs mental preparation, orchestrating the mood of the wedding banquet, the symbolic meaning of the brideâs crown, conduct at the nuptial bed, and pious conversation between bride and groom.
* h/t to Dr. Tom Cutterham for this, who is also working on a biography (and working to get a publisher for said biography) on Angelica Schuyler Church âwhich explores the processes of bourgeois class-formation in this period through the lens of her ideas, exploits, and transatlantic voyages.â Heâs already released some of his research/early thoughts on âThe Labor of Bourgeois Sexualityâ during this period, or listen to the podcast, in which he reads from a section of his biography on ASCâs social climbing to get her husband into Parliament, including a ârisqueâ section of a letter from Baron von Steuben to Church.Â

How 200 Volunteers Pulled Off One of the Most Difficult Cave Rescues Ever
After receiving a blood transfusion 3,000 feet below ground, ailing American caver Mark Dickey was stable. Saving his life would require an arduous ascent.
â By Vedrana Simicevic | September 14, 2023
On Monday eveningânine days after the call for help was issuedâAmerican caver Mark Dickey, who fell seriously ill 3,400 feet deep inside a cave in Turkey, was successfully rescued. It was one of the most difficult and complex cave rescue missions ever executed, according to veteran rescuers involved in the effort.
The Morca Cave, where Dickey was a member of an expedition to map the underground system, is the third deepest in Turkey. It contains a complicated combination of narrow passages and steep, vertical tunnels. The caveâs entrance is a remote spot at 6800 feet above sea level in the Taurus mountains, where only a weak mobile signal can call for help.
Dickey suffered sudden gastrointestinal bleeding, and his condition appeared life-threatening. It took an international team of 200 rescuersâvolunteers from nine different countriesâeight days to pull off the entire mission. Transporting Dickey to the surface, the most complex part of the rescue, was executed by 90 people and took just over two days.

âEverybody involved went beyond their limit of tiredness and just kept on working. It all developed exceptionally fast,â says Croatian rescuer Dinko Novosel, president of the European Cave Rescue Association (ECRA) and coordinator of the international caving teams conducting the rescue.
Dickey is a well-known member of the world caver community and leads the New Jersey Initial Response Teamâa multi-disciplinary rescue group. For the international team, it felt like they were rescuing one of their own.
âThese people are some of the most experienced and skilled cavers and rescuers in the world. And each of them gave their maximum,â said Giuseppe Conti, an experienced caver and rescuer from the Italian National Alpine and Speleological Rescue Corps, who led rescue logistics inside the cave.
An Underground Crisis
Turkeyâs landscape is marked by karst, a type of terrain where caves easily form. Mile-deep caves in the region make it a popular destination for local and foreign cave researchers, also known as speleologists.
It was while more than 3,000 feet deep in one of these caves that Dickey suddenly began bleeding internally.
Alerted by his fiancée and fellow member of the expedition, Jessica Van Ord, the first rescuers arrived at the scene on September 3, and a four-person medical team from the Hungarian Cave Rescue Service immediately started a seven-hour descent to reach Dickey. With no direct communication to the ill caver, the rescue team feared they might not reach him in time.
âI had more than ten possible scenarios in my head, including the one where he is already dead. But fortunately, he was in better shape than I was expecting,â said Hungarian doctor and caver ZsĂłfia ZĂĄdor.
At the time of their arrival, Dickey had already lost a lot of blood, frighteningly visible by the small hole in the ground filled with his blood. Zador gave him medication to lower his stomach acidity and stop the bleeding. Despite being a thousand meters deep inside the dark and cold cave, surrounded by mud and dust, ZĂĄdor and her team were able to perform a blood transfusion and gave Dickey four units of blood and plasma, warming the blood bags with the help of a camp gas stove.
For most of the rescue, Dickey was carried out on a stretcher, an endeavor made dangerous and challenging by the cave's narrow passageways. Photograph By Umit Bektas, Reuters/Redux
Though stabilized, his condition remained life-threatening, explains ZĂĄdor. He would have to be carried out in a stretcher.
Meanwhile, 3,000 feet above, the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) started the operation, officially giving ECRA authority to coordinate international teams rescue teams. Cavers from Turkey, Italy, Croatia, Bulgaria, and Poland arrived at the caveâs entry point and began preparing the cave for Dickeyâs transport. Rescuers from Ukraine, the U.S., and Romania would soon join the rescue.
Teams equipped the cave with two different communication systemsâa phone cable and an additional wireless communication system that can transmit short messages through hundreds of meters of solid rock, called âcave-link.â Bulgarian rescuers widened paths through meandering passages between 1,900 and 2,400 feet, detonating small blasts in some sections and using only chisels and hammers in others. Additional rescuers worked for hours to equip the cave with anchors and ropes.
An International Community of Expert Cavers
Although these kinds of accidents happen very rarely, rescues from the worldâs deepest caves are notoriously dangerous.
Through most of the 20th century, getting trapped a few thousand feet inside a cave was, in most cases, a death sentence. But in the last few decades, national caving associations in countries rich with these underground cave systems have grown larger and rescue techniques have improved.
Each national team of cavers brings different expertise. In several European countriesâlike France, Croatia, and Italyârescuers are accustomed to big vertical drops, having some of the deepest caves in the world. In England, submerged horizontal underground passages are common, and navigating them is a skill that English cavers used to execute another famous missionâsaving 12 boys and their coach from the depths of a Thai cave in 2018.

This diverse know-how is why ERCA formed in 2012 to share knowledge for rescue missions requiring hundreds of expert cavers.
And it was in 2014 that ERCA tested its life-saving skills when a German cave scientist sustained a head injury deep within the Riesending Cave in Bavaria, near the German border with Austria.
It took 12 days and more than 700 people to bring him back to the surface from a depth of 3,000 feet. It was the biggest cave rescue mission ever organized and the first one that brought together rescuers from five different countries. ECRA members say that 2014 mission gave them the experience they needed to execute the rescue mission in Morca in such a short time.
A Heroic Rescue
âIt was much harder than in Germany, we had to be fast because we were afraid he would dieâ, says Marko Rakovac, a member of the Croatian mountain rescue service who also participated in Riesending cave rescue.
To execute a cave rescue, team members are typically assigned to different parts of the route where they wait for the stretcher. Transporting the injured person is slow and exhausting because the stretcher has to be pulled on a rope, from one anchor to another. In vertical shafts, this is achieved with the help of the pulley system and the counterweightâthe latter often the rescuers themselves.
âThis time we decided to organize rescuers in self-sufficient teams that would move through longer parts of the cave, from one camp to another,â explained Novosel.
Down in the cold and wet cave, the rescue was gruelling. Rescuers worked for twenty hours at a time, only to struggle to find a place to rest, some of them sleeping on the wet floor, surrounded by the smell of human secretion.
Nine days after issuing a call for help, Dickey was finally rescued and airlifted to a nearby hospital. Dickey is himself an experienced rescuer, and for the team of international cavers, rescuing Dickey meant rescuing one of their own. Photograph By Mert Gokhan Koc, Dia Images/AP
âThe team who needed more than 20 hours to transport Dickey to 2,200 feet had to go back down to 3,200 feet to find a place for sleep. After a few hours rest they headed back up to 1,600 feet to work in the next section,â describes Rakovac.
The journey wasnât without its setbacks. Partway through the transport, Dickeyâs condition faltered, alarming the medical team. In a narrow cave passage, another blood transfusion wouldnât be possible. And while navigating a vertical passage at around 2,200 feet, a large piece of rock detached, squeezing the ankle of a Bulgarian rescuer who narrowly evaded life-threatening injury.
âIt had at least [600 pounds]. We had to move the rock so he could pull the leg out. There were twenty people in that section, and everybody went quiet, pondering that we now potentially have two victims,â says Rakovac.
The especially narrow passagesâwhile not particularly difficult for a fit caverâremained the biggest problem during the rescue transport.
It would take too long to physically widen the most problematic passages, says Conti. After consulting with a doctor, they decided to have Dickey navigate the most difficult passages by himself.
After he was successfully rescued, Dickey was flown to nearby Mercin City Hospital to receive medical treatment. Speaking to ABC News, Dickey expressed gratitude and relief: âCavers are like family, and every step of the way I had people by my side. Once we started moving, it happened a lot faster than I expectedâ

An independent scientific agency that advises the federal government on policies that could impact marine mammals said there is no evidence linking site preparation work for offshore wind farms with a number of whale deaths along the U.S. East Coast.
In a statement released Tuesday, the Marine Mammal Commission became the third federal agency to reject a link between the deaths and the offshore wind energy industry, despite a growing narrative among offshore wind opponents that probing the ocean floor to prepare for wind turbine projects is killing whales.
Last month, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management said there is no evidence linking offshore wind development with whale deaths.
The commission said 16 humpback whales and at least one critically endangered North Atlantic right whale have washed ashore dead on the East Coast this winter.
âDespite several reports in the media, there is no evidence to link these strandings to offshore wind energy development,â the commission said.
The deaths are part of an âunusual mortality eventâ involving humpback whales declared by the National Marine Fisheries Service in 2016. The agency said 40% of the whales that could be examined at necropsy, or post-mortem, showed evidence of a ship strike or entanglement with fishing gear. Others were floating at sea or otherwise inaccessible.
The commission said the number of whale strandings is not unusual. Ten or more humpback whales have stranded each year since 2016, with a high of 34 in 2017, it added.
It said the number of whales in the northeast is growing, something other agencies have noted as well. As the population grows, more whales are choosing to spend the winter in the northeast, where they are more vulnerable to being struck by ships or entangled in fishing gear, instead of migrating to warmer areas.
On Feb. 12, a dead North Atlantic right whale washed ashore in Virginia Beach, Virginia. It was a 20-year-old, 43-foot male.
A necropsy was conducted by numerous state and city agencies and a private stranding response program, determining that the whale suffered a catastrophic blunt force traumatic injury, impacting its spine. The injuries, which are consistent with those often found in animals that have been struck by ships, included multiple vertebral fractures that would have resulted in death shortly after the injury.
Today, there are fewer than 350 North Atlantic right whales in existence, with fewer than 95 mature females in the population. An unusual mortality event was declared for these animals in 2017.
The commissionâs report comes as offshore wind opponents are pushing for investigations into whether offshore wind is killing whales, even though the federal government has been investigating whale deaths since 2016.
Earlier this week, two Republican Congressmen from New Jersey announced legislation aimed at investigating, pausing or halting offshore wind projects.
Rep. Chris Smithâs bill would require an investigation into the environmental approval process for offshore wind projects. A bill by Rep. Jeff Van Drew would impose a moratorium on all existing offshore wind projects and prohibit all future projects.
About 30 New Jersey mayors have signed a letter calling for a moratorium on offshore wind projects and an investigation into whether the whale deaths are related to such work.
The Marine Mammal Commission is an independent government agency charged by the Marine Mammal Protection Act to further the conservation of marine mammals and their environment. Its website says it provides âscience-based oversight of domestic and international policies and actions of federal agencies with mandates to address human impacts on marine mammals and their ecosystems.â
âOur role is unique,â the agencyâs mission statement said. âWe are the only U.S. government agency that provides comprehensive oversight of all science, policy, and management actions affecting marine mammals.â
â
IF YOU CARE ABOUT WHALES... YOU NEED TO CARE ABOUT SHIPS!!!
WIND MILLS ARE NOT KILLING WHALES! SEA FLOOR PROBES ARE NOT KILLING WHALES! WHALES ARE NOT STUPID! THEY DON'T SWIM INTO STATIONARY OBJECTS! WHALES ALSO DO NOT SWIM ALONG THE SEA FLOOR! USE YOUR BRAIN! WHALES ARE MAMMALS! THEY NEED TO BREATH AIR! THEY SWIM NEAR THE SURFACE WHERE THEY'RE CONSTANTLY STRUCK BY THE HULLS OF BOATS!
WHALES USE SONAR TO UNDERSTAND THEIR ENVIRONMENT! THE SOUND OF THE BOAT MOTORS IS DISORIENTING FOR THEM! IT CONFUSES THEM! THEY HAVE A HARD TIME EVALUATING HOW FAR AWAY THE BOAT IS AND HOW FAST IT'S MOVING! SO THEY GET HIT ALL THE TIME!
BOAT CAPTAINS ARE NOT CONFUSED! THEY HAVE ADVANCED RADAR SYSTEMS! THEY KNOW THE WHALES ARE THERE! THEY KNOW THEY'RE HITTING THE WHALES! IT TAKES TIME TO GO AROUND THE WHALES! THEY'RE INSTRUCTED BY THEIR BOSSES NOT TO TAKE THAT TIME! THEY'RE TOLD TO HIT THE WHALES! AHHHHH!!!!!

"Your a fucking idiot!!"
"Do you think that it started with Hamas on Oct. 7th?"
"Holy shit!!"
"Deliberately targeting civilians and taking old people and children hostage"
You sure about that?
"Finally, it explains why army spokesperson, Daniel Hagari found that a "substantial" number of the hostages taken by Hamas are military officers." -Wsw.org (Referenced later also!!)
'Jewish militias organized several bombing attacks against civilians and military Arab targets. On 12 December 1947, the Irgun placed a car bomb opposite the Damascus Gate, the main entrance to the Old City of Jerusalem, killing 20 people.[19] On 4 January 1948, the Lehi detonated a lorry bomb against the headquarters of the paramilitary al-Najjada located in Jaffa's Town Hall, killing 15 Arabs and injuring 80.[19][20]'
'The next day, Irgun members in a stolen police van rolled a barrel bomb[22] into a large group of civilians who were waiting for a bus by the Jaffa Gate, killing 20.[23][24][25][26] Another Irgun bomb went off in the Ramla market on 18 February, killing 7 residents and injuring 45.[27] On 28 February, the Palmach organised a bombing attack against a garage in Haifa, killing 30 people.[28]'
Yeah. Israel did bad things.
More than Hamas EVER did.
"As of 5 March 2024, over 31,000 people (30,228 Palestinian and 1,410 Israeli) have been reported as killed in the IsraelâHamas war, including 94 journalists (89 Palestinian, 2 Israeli and 3 Lebanese) and over 136 UNRWA aid workers."
Look at THE FUCKING NUMBERS
". As the World Socialist Web Site has repeatedly warned, ever since his government took office at the end of 2022, Netanyahu has mounted provocation after provocation against the Palestinians aimed at inciting retaliation, as then occurred on October 7. Al-Aqsa Flood provided the casus belli for a pre-planned campaign of mass murder and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians beginning with Gaza and then moving on to the West bank and including Israelâs two million Arab citizens."
"Many of the Israeli families of those killed, injured or taken hostage on October 7âreflecting a widely held view that Netanyahu is responsible for the disaster and did nothing to prevent itâhave called for an independent and international investigation, which the government has refused. They have demanded answers to two basic questions:
What did Israelâs military-intelligence apparatus know in advance about what Hamas had planned?
And what actually happened over the weekend of October 7-8?"
"The authorities have not explained how Israelâs massive electronic border fence could have been breached with only rudimentary tools and without any sirens going off or army bases being alertedâwith the result that the Middle Eastâs most sophisticated army took hours to arrive at the scene in a country no bigger than the US state of New Jersey."
"...and prevent the establishment of a mini-Palestinian state made up of the West Bank and Gaza."
"Just two days after the attack, on Monday October 9, Egypt exposed Netanyahuâs protestations that he had no foreknowledge. An Egyptian intelligence official told the Associated Press that Cairo had repeatedly warned the Israeli authorities that âsomething bigâ was being planned."
"Netanyahu has denied receiving any such warning, denouncing the story as âfake news.â
"Israelâs own soldiers also reportedly raised the alarm. But they were ignored and threatened."
"Put more bluntly, they wanted an atrocity and so stood down their defence and rescue services. Furthermore, the Biden administrationâs full-throated support for Israelâincluding its deployment of warships to the region the very next dayâindicates that October 7 was seized on by US military and intelligence officials to activate war plans prepared long in advance."
"Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli prisonsâsome 1,500 of whom were being held under administrative detention, without charge or trial, for an indefinite period."
"..which just five days earlier had been extended by one day to October 7."
"According to reports in the Israeli press, the IDF, âcaught off guard,â were slow to respond to the desperate cries for help."
"377 military and police personnel and 845 civilians, for a downwardly revised total of 1,222. The initial total included some of the dead Palestinians.)"
"Some 1,500 Palestinians were reportedly killed, with none apparently captured alive. "
"IDF Apache helicopters were used repeatedly in the next days, killing not only Palestinian fighters, but also Israeli army personnel and civilians. The helicopter strikes explain the significant damage to buildings, with many burnt out, and the large number of burnt-out cars, as well as several burned bodies, which the government had blamed on Palestinians armed with rifles and hand grenadesâweapons that are incapable of causing that level or type of damage."
"In the event, however, IDF soldiers fired not just on the Palestinians, but also on (Israeli) hostages."
"while several Israelis have claimed they were fired upon by Israeli military and police."
"Hamas could not have planned to attack it, as the festival organisers switched to the site in the Western Negev desert only two days before"
"IDF helicopter opened fire on the attackers, hitting some people attending the festival. ABC News had earlier reported that an Israeli tank had headed to the site of the festival, while videos appeared to show IDF forces opening fire at Palestinian fighters through a crowd of unarmed civilians."
"The IDF acted as brutal and trigger-happy mass murderers of both Palestinians and Israelis.
Many Israeli captives were still alive on the Monday, two days after the events of October 7.
Hostages were not only killed in the crossfire that took place between the IDF and Palestinian militia on the Saturday. Many were killed as a consequence of the IDFâs deliberate decision to attack the kibbutz with tank shells and other heavy weaponry at close quarters in the full knowledge that hostages and their captors were there.
The IDF, not the Palestinians, caused many of the Israeli civilian deaths that were used to justify Israelâs genocidal war on Gaza and the deployment of US warships to the Middle East. How many can only be confirmed by releasing the results of autopsies that would show the type of bullets used."
"Far from protecting Israeli civilians, the Netanyahu government and the IDF used them as cannon fodder in pursuit of a policy of Israeli expansionism and Jewish Supremacy."
"Netanyahu has, in part, agreed to a temporary âoperational pauseâ in Israelâs genocidal assault on Gaza, in return for Hamas releasing 50 hostages, to try and contain mounting anger within Israel over his responsibility for October 7. But there is no reason to believe this will work."
"It is not a question, as Israelâs Zionist opposition to Netanyahu put it, of handing the reins to someone who is more militarily and politically âcompetentâ to wage mass murder and ethnic cleansing, such as defence minister Gallant.
The demand must be for an immediate end to the genocide of the Palestinians, repudiating Zionism and advocating the creation of a multinational state with full equality for its Palestinian and Jewish citizens as part of a United Socialist States of the Middle East."
0:30 -0:50 : 'On Oct. 17th, 2023, more than 500 people were killed in an Israeli air strike at Al Alhi Arab Hospital in Gaza city. [..] Independent Investigators and weapons experts analyzed videos and ultimately concluded that the Israeli military was responsible for the strike.'
0:52 - 1:07: "The Israeli military, that said they would never do such a thing as bomb a hospital, bombed and raided Gaza's largest hospital, Al Shifa, alleging that Hamas was operating a command centre in tunnels below the complex. A claim that was repeatedly denied by both Hamas and hospital administration."
1:11 - 1:12: "The Israeli military also shared a *fabricated* 3-D animation to reveal what the tunnels apparently looked like."
1:19 - 1:21: [..] "But since Israeli forces finally gained access to the hospital, the military has yet to provide concrete evidence of a subterranean Hamas command centre."
2:23: "The right to self defense applies to a state when it is attacked by another, and its national security and existence are exposed to danger. At that time, this state informs the United Nations first, and then uses for to defend itself. This does not apply to the current situation. (Gaza) - Shawan Jabareen."
2:30 -2:39:"[..] Israeli forces have intentionally targeted civillian areas, throught the enclave accusing all of Gaza's residents ((Yes. Including the children that were less than a few days old who were killed.)) of being 'aware' and 'involved' with Hamas."
2:58 - 3:05: 'Meaning, over 80% of Gaza's population to flee their homes and become displaced due it's relentless air strikes."
3:28- 3:32 'So that anyone critical of the Israeli State, or its actions is invariably and automatically charged with anti-Semitism.'
3:43-3:44: 'And to discourage Jews critical of Israel's inhumane and illegal activities from speaking up.'
(Sound familiar? Oh yeah. It does. https://encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/timeline-event/holocaust/1942-1945/german-poster-announces-death-penalty-for-aiding-jews, "I remind you that according to the Third Decree of the General Governor's concerning the residential restrictions in the General Government of 10/15/1941 (VBL; abbreviation for Verordnungsblatt Generalgouvernement, p. 595) not only Jews who have left their designated residential area will be punished with death, but the same penalty applies to anyone who knowingly provides refuge to such Jews. This includes not only the providing of a night's lodging and food, but also any other aid, such as transporting them in vehicles of any sort, through the purchase of Jewish valuables, etc.")
3:50-3:57: "The Israeli military has used deadly weapons and ammunition including white phosphorus shells in its attack on Gaza. A clear violation of international law."
(Hey sound familiar? 'Munitions containing white phosphorus were used extensively in World War II' https://www.weaponslaw.org/weapons/white-phosphorus-munitions#:~:text=White%20phosphorus%20has%20been%20used,as%20an%20anti%2Dpersonnel%20weapon.)
4:25-4:50: 'Tel Aviv has been claiming that Palestinian civilians are being killed because Hamas is using them as human shields, however no evidence has been put forth to substantiate this claim and even international organizations have been unable to verify it. In fact, rights groups argue that the use of human shields is actually a 'common practice' employed by Israeli soldiers.'(Example is shown in video.)
4:57-5:06: 'Soon after ordering Palestinians in northern Gaza to move to the south, which it [IDF] assured would be a 'safe zone', Israel began bombing the southern region alleging that it was also a centre of Hamas activity.'
5:09-5:21: 'Israeli officals designated Al Mawasi in southern Gaza as a safe zone that would have acess to humanitarian aid. Yet what displaced Palestinians found, instead, was a desolate wasteland without any infastructure.'
5:27-5:43: 'Following the killing of Al Jazeera journalist, Same Abu Daqqa in Gaza, the Israeli army stated, on Dec. 16th, that 'it has never, and will never deliberately target journalists.' (Those guys are in bright blue, for a reason.) However, since Oct. 7th, Israel has killed at least 109 journalists in Gaza." (all of which were wearing the blue vest reading 'PRESS'.)
5:53: 'It [Israel] refers to Palestinian resistance groups, including Hamas, as 'terrorist' organizations. All while Tel Aviv itself faces accusations of war crimes and human rights violations.' (Wanna go to Telegram and see some of those? Yeah? Yeah? )
6:30-7:00: 'Following Hamas's attack on Israel, Israeli media had reported that the Palestinian group had killed at least 40 babies, quoting Israeli forces as the source of this information. [..] Said that babies and toddlers had been found with their 'heads decapitated'. But soon thereafter, international journalists and news agencies who had reported the stoy walked back on their reports. (USA Today, New York Post, CNN, CBS News Miami.) and Israeli officals say that they could not confirm that any babies had been beheaded.'

Laboring at Big Bend Tunnel
New Jersey looms large in the history of Labor Day. Two labor organizers with roots in the stateâPeter J. McGuire and Matthew Maguireâare often credited with being the first to propose the concept of a Labor Day holiday in the United States.
John Henry, legendary for his work on the railroads, was a nineteen-year-old who came from New Jersey as well, at least according to some historians. Many details of the folk heroâs life remain subject to historical dispute, but the âsteel-drivingâ freedman is widely lionized in ballads as a man who did battle with a steam-powered rock drill and won.
Steel drivers were laborers tasked with hammering dynamite holes into rock during the construction of railroad lines in the 1800s. As the legend goes, Henryâa freedman working on a tunnel on the Chesapeake and Ohio (C&O) Railway in West Virginiaâwas so strong and skilled that he set out to prove to the railroad companies that he could drill faster than a steam-powered drill, a new tool that threatened the jobs of steel-drivers at the time.
âUsing two 10-pound hammers, one in each hand, he pounded the drill so fast and so hard that he drilled a 14-foot hole into the rock,â according to an account of the contest published by the National Park Service. âThe legend says that the drill was only able to drill nine feet. John Henry beat the steam drill and later died of exhaustion.â
There isnât consensus on where the reputed contest took place, but one of the leading candidates is Big Bend Tunnel (also called Great Bend Tunnel) in West Virginia. The 6,450-foot (1,966-meter) tunnel cuts off an eight-mile bend in the Greenbrier River, which winds around Big Bend Mountain before joining the New River to the west. The tunnel, built by over 800 men, many freed slaves and Irish immigrants, was the longest on the C&O line when it was completed in 1872.
On August 23, 2024, the OLI (Operational Land Imager) on Landsat 8 captured this image of the area where the tunnel bores through red shale in Big Bend Mountain. Cleared forest along the track is visible on either side of the tunnelâs east and west boreholes. The town of Talcott, home to the John Henry Historical Park and an eight-foot-tall bronze statue of John Henry, is visible to the east of the tunnel.
Despite the historical park and research that points to Big Bend Tunnel as the location of Henryâs feat, some scholars believe that Lewis Tunnel, 45 miles to the east in Virginia, is a more likely setting for the duel. Others think that it may have happened in the Coosa and Oak Tunnels in Alabama.
Whatever the location, the legacy of John Henry lives on in songs performed by Arthur Bell, Harry Belafonte, Bruce Springsteen, Gabriel Brown, Johnny Cash, Van Morrison, and many other musicians.
Few who have studied the legend believe Henry actually died of exhaustion during the contest. Others have suggested he died in a rock slide, from fever, or from the lung disease silicosis. Either way, his story has become a potent symbol of the sweat and sacrifice that American workers have given to build the United States into what it is today.

"Youthful Trio Taken For Long Ride When They Hitched On Toronto Truck," Toronto Star. March 14, 1934. Page 1. ---- Special to The Star Galt, March 14.- "The sun was shining, and I guess the spring fever got us and here we are," chanted a trio of Toronto lads when interviewed to-night in the police detention room as they waited the arrival of the father of one of them to take them back home.
Allan Peacock, 15, Manning Ave., acting as spokesman, explained how they happened to be in Galt, and it was a real stowaway story. "At noon we decided to play hookey. It was so nice that we decided to enjoy the outdoors. We were standing at the subway at Queen St. when a big furniture van stopped for the street lights and we climbed on the back of it, intending to ride out to New Toronto. hop off there and get ride a back home.
"However, the truck driver took a cut-off and came out on the Dundas highway and the machine didn't stop until it got to a service station at the city limits of Galt. Once we thought we would try to get up to the window behind the driver's seat and ask him to stop, but we couldn't get to it because of the furniture in the van, so we had to wait till the machine stopped."
The boys walked into the city and being strangers were stopped by a policeman to whom they told their story and predicament. They didn't have a cent, but found the local police were good fellows, being taken out and given a meal. In the mean- time Toronto police were communicated with.
Peacock was accompanied by Glen Osborne, 14, Jersey Ave., a fellow pupil in junior fourth at Clinton St. school, and Jim Gilbert, 14, Clinton St., a bright little chap, who is in his second year at Technical school and in his first year in art.
The boys said it was two o'clock when they jumped the truck, and it was 4.30 when they reached Galt. They said they would be back in school Wednesday morning. and promised never again to steal rides on trucks.
