AMC’s Interview with The Vampire is a masterclass on meaningfully changing the race of the characters in an adaptation.

Louis and Lestat were always meant to play out a struggle with a resentment that came from a power dynamic; Lestat being a white frenchman and Louis being a black man in the time their story takes place gave many layers to that.

Armand, from the inception was always overlooked and exploited; his irrational grudge to being sidelined and his sadistic overreaction to it plays with his messed up understanding of love. His first lover and abuser painted him and completely changed his complexion, erasing him from history; creating precedent to his ruthlessness that stemmed from his existential fears.
