Reportagem: Vagos Metal Fest 2024 (Dia 2)

Chegámos ao segundo dia do Vagos Metal Fest debaixo de um sol abrasador, já com a notícia do cancelamento de Leach (“por motivos alheios à organização”) substituídos pelos portugueses Morto.

Apesar de um primeiro dia intenso e do calor que se fazia sentir neste horário de maior calor, os festivaleiros estavam prontíssimos para ouvir Capela Mortuária, que não desiludem. É, como habitual, um concerto energético e agressivo, bem ao estilo do thrash e o público não se poupou aos circle pits nem se acanhou a acompanhar nas letras. Com vários convidados, incluindo António Silva (Warout), os Capela Mortuária mostram, mais uma vez, que são um grupo promissor na cena portuguesa.

Logo em seguida, assistimos à atuação de Morto, que nos trazem o “old school death grind metal”. Apresentaram o seu primeiro álbum “Morto Vivo” (2023), e sendo uma banda com poucos anos de atividade, mostraram que vieram para ficar. Certamente um dia em cheio para o baterista Jordi Lopes, que é também baterista em Capela Mortuária (para além de outros projetos). O metal português está vivo e de boa saúde.

A “banda de metal iraniana mais controversa”, como apelidada pela Loudwire, sobe ao palco por volta das 15:30h. Formados em 2010, com letras intrinsecamente políticas – que até levaram alguns membros a ser condenados a 14 anos de prisão por “blasfémia” – eram bastante esperados pelo público. Depois de se refugiarem na Noruega, onde estão hoje estabelecidos, lançam vários temas e o álbum “Revenge at All Costs”. O poder revolucionário do metal pode ser sentido no groove/death metal de Confess.

Segue-se o trio australiano The Omnific com o seu metal progressivo e introspectivo. Passaram por vários temas do novo álbum “The Law Augmenting Returns” que explora a crença de que quanto mais esforço e dedicação se investe na arte, maiores serão os retornos. A performance foi de um nível técnico excelente e complexo, com bastante interação com o público. Não só nos convenceram como nos deslumbraram.

Voltamos ao thrash, em grande, com Injector. E prova disso foram os vários e sucessivos circle pits que se formaram durante a atuação da banda. Um concerto muito sólido que junta os elementos mais fundamentais do heavy metal com o thrash. Pessoalmente, enquanto apreciadora de thrash metal, seria uma espetáculo que voltaria a repetir.

Os espanhóis Morphium, fundados em Girona em 2005, já cá andam há muitos anos – e nota-se. A experiência e conforto que mostram no palco são palpáveis, com uma performance altamente visual que gracejam nos maiores festivais da Península Ibérica. Foram sem dúvida um dos pontos mais altos desta tarde, que ia já muito bem encaminhada.

Saor, vindos das paisagens encantadoras da Escócia, emergem em 2013 e demonstram uma grande influência nos ritmos Folk e Celtas. Foi o que experienciámos no palco do Vagos, uma verdadeira viagem por histórias e sonoridades que nos transportam para cenários idílicos, batalhas e lendas folclóricas. Recomenda-se vivamente para fãs de black/folk metal.

Segue-se uma das bandas mais emblemáticas da cena musical portuguesa, Mão Morta. Uma banda marcada pela irreverência e pelo seu rock avant-garde, que desde a sua formação em 1984, em Braga, se mostra com uma atitude totalmente punk, que afronta os valores da sociedade portuguesa e os questiona. Celebram 40 anos com um concerto memorável, apesar de curto – acompanhados em todos os momentos com o coro da audiência.

Set List

Voltamos ao mais extremo com Samael, o grupo suíço de black metal. Com temas compostos de vários elementos da música industrial, gótica ou eletrónica, passaram por vários dos mais ouvidos como “Baphomet’s Throne” “Ceremony of Opposites” e “Rain”.

Foi um concerto explosivo que alimentou a energia do público depois do descanço para jantar e do concerto mais “calmo” de Mão Morta.

É cliché dizer que Epica foi épico. Mas vamos dizer na mesma. De todas as pessoas com quem falámos durante o festival, a resposta era unânime: “Vim para ver Epica”. São já 21 anos de carreira, com a voz soprano de Simone Simons a encantar várias gerações. O carisma de todos os membros da banda, que iam interagindo entre si e o público, pautado por uma pirotecnia brilhante, tornaram este um espetáculo que merece ser visto e aplaudido. Entre temas mais recentes e mais antigos como “Storms of Sorrow” ou “Cry for the Moon”, o público foi acompanhando a banda como podia (não é fácil atingir aquelas notas de Simone).

O hidromel já nos corria bem nas veias, a depressão pós-concerto (para os fãs de Epica) começava a bater, mas God Dethroned veio repor energias. Ainda se manteve bastante público, e ficámos em transe com a brutalidade sónica dos holandeses.

Seguiu-se a festa noite dentro com a DJ Bianca Oceane, que nos presenteou com vários temas de peso.

Foi bom voltar a Vagos, esperamos estar por lá para o ano novamente. Já estão confirmados os seguintes nomes: Mayhem, Bizarra Locomotiva, Moonspell, e Decapitated. Marquem na agenda: 1 a 3 de Agosto e apressem-se porque os Early Bird já estão esgotados.

Queremos deixar o nosso mais sincero abraço ao segurança Nuno Damas, que foi despedido pela entidade patronal durante o festival por fazer crowdsurfing. A música é para ser vivida e sentida.

GODIVA Soon after our performance at Laurus Nobilis Music Fest Famalicão 2018, we started to wonder if there was a space for Godiva in the musical scene, and quickly found out we did not care. We wanted to be heard, no matter what. Everything that has value, takes its origin from the heart and we found that out with the new lineup: André Matos (rhythm guitar & orchestrations), Arcélio Sampaio (bass guitar), Eduardo Sinatra (drums), Ricardo Ribeiro (lead guitar) and Pedro Faria (vox & lyrics). Together we have enough heart to conquer the world, even if the world does not have space for us. A new Godiva emerged: stronger, bolder, and fearless. A prelude to what would be our next concert. Vagos Metal Fest 2019 epitomizes the spirit of this new found self. A huge risk was taken in order to create something that had not been done in Portugal until then: a metal band playing live with an orchestra! It was a terrifying ordeal, but fortune only favors the bold, right? The orchestra was built from the ground up: André Matos and Ricardo Ribeiro composed all the symphonic part of the music and we managed to miraculously gather over 30 classical musicians on stage with only three rehearsals. It was extremely hard, a challenge like no other, we had to squeeze every drop of blood in order to create something immortal. The lucky few who had the chance to witness this amazing and one of a kind show, had a first taste of Hubris - our new release. During the making of this album, we had a big goal: trying to be affirmative in a world of uncertainty, trying to be metal but taking advantage of all the experience we attained and throwing all the debris out the window, that are made to drag you down. Thus, Hubris is born as a critique of modernity, a symphony of (basic) failings of the modern man, an unwilling exploration through the psyche of the 21st century man, which we never thought would become so actual. Curiously, the concept of this album was not premeditated or prepared beforehand, it happened like a surge of inevitability that had to be born. Hubris was thought to come out in the beginning of 2020, however it became delayed, like everything this year. Hopefully, it will be released at the end of this year. Vagos Metal Fest 2021 – Confluence of Hard Rock & Heavy Metal

Portugal is primarily known for its port wine, Pastel de nata, Piri Piri Chicken, Football & Golf. But, for the past few years, a small set of hard rock & hard metal enthusiasts have been making a mark in the music industry for its Vagos Metal Fest 2021.

Although Fado (a form of singing) deserves the much-coveted tag of UNESCO’s World Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Metal Fest is also climbing the ranks of being a popular festival for the past few years. The 2021 edition of Vagos fest will be held from 29th July to 31st July.

Origins of Vagos Metal Fest 2021

The Vagos Metal Festival that you see today has had very humble beginnings. It originated in 2009 in the Aveiro region where a small event used to take place called Rock in Ria. At that time, the event featured a few International & Portuguese bands. This event then laid the platform for the Vagos Metal Fest that we see today.

They apply a wide variety of different elements to their music, always pushing to add newness to their sound. This time around they’ve included everything from acoustic bits, to guest musicians, to even (for the first time) the notes of a      piano. All ten songs flow seamlessly yet each leaves its own distinct impression. The first single and title track 'Humanicide'      triumphantly represents the entirety of the album, immediately energising the listener. Mark Osegueda remarks: “I wanted to write something that metal fans could really grasp onto. Something dark and intense, that still makes sense. Right now I think it’s so apparent that the earth is in a sickened state.”

  For the 4th      album cycle in a row, DEATH      ANGEL returned to their producer and friend Jason Suecof  (DEICIDE, TRIVIUM) of Audiohammer studios for the recording and mixing, along with the mastering of the legendary Ted Jensen (SLIPKNOT, PANTERA) of Sterling Sound who added the final touches and brought it all to life, with artist Brent Elliott White (LAMB OF GOD, MEGADETH) providing the ominous cover artwork.             “I'm ecstatic to present Death Angel’s 9th studio      album, Humanicide. This collection of songs represents the      band in its current state - united, vital, intense and (still) hungry      like the wolf! I wanted this record to be quite diverse stylistically while obviously keeping with the parameters of metal. DA has been known to push the envelope and we absolutely did this time.
