This isn’t to start a political conversation at all, but I think any chance we had of a Taylor and Karlie pap walk in the near future is gone after the backlash Karlie is getting this week. Taylor Swift the brand can’t be associated with that.
no yes like okay so let me meet you where you are and point out that this is exactly why after many years i have learned to just never expect anything and instead to just receive the positives one at a time as they arrive.
because with the nature of their lives as we see them there is just absolutely no guarantee that the world is going to sit still for them, you know? but hey, because the world turns on a dime, it could flip again. a U-turn could become an I-turn or an O-turn. so for me i just land upon… what is the value in investing so tightly in hopes of being able to explain it all ahead of time when that’s not the reality of the times that we live in. why not just find value in other parts of it that you can, instead? i just prefer to not talk in absolutes, speaking from experience. it does a number on the heart when i think there are other places in one’s life worth investing those sorts of expectations in.

Kausap ko 'yung friend kong nagre-residency. Kahit nandu'n siya, kinoconsider niya pa ring mag-abroad or kumuha na lang ng regular post sa health center in case magku-quit siya.
Pero what did I study for 'di ba??? Stage fright lang 'to.
Thank God for med friends.
Medyo gets ko na 'yung iba kung bakit nagku-quit sila kahit 2-3 years in na sila sa mga program. It's a vuca world. Walang right or wrong answer.
Sabi ng ibang friends, na-delay daw ang adulting phase namin gawa ng extended schooling. Safe zone nga naman ang school kahit papaano. Para akong ni-release sa outer space all of a sudden, wala nang gravity, walang hangin, walang direksyon.
Helpful 'yung dulong part ng 4HWW sa akin. May sinet siyang criteria, kung hindi raw pasok doon ang mga iniisip ko, huwag ko nang pag-aksayahan ng panahon. Kasi wala akong magagawa about it. Why bother.
Napakalaking risk no'ng MSc sa UK pero why not. Minsan lang naman mabubuhay. Don't regret it now. Hahaha. Hope for the best na lang.

Real-world Ready: Essential Life Skills to Help Our Kids Succeed
The world you grew up in is very different from the one your child is growing up in. Jobs are changing, technology is always changing, and flexibility is crucial. While academics are vital, your child's future success and wellbeing depend on their having good life skills. Why Life Skills Are Important Imagine your child's future—a world full of obstacles and thrilling opportunities. Essential life skills are the means by which people can successfully traverse this world! Over time, these will enable them to: 1. Communicate Effectively: Success in education, the workplace, and personal life depends on the ability to articulate ideas effectively, listen intently, and form enduring bonds with others. 2. Collaborate: To thrive in a collaborative society, one must be able to work well with people, resolve problems in a constructive manner, and value other points of view. 3. Think Outside the Box: Children with creativity and problem-solving abilities may approach problems creatively and come up with original solutions.
4. Embrace Change with Confidence: In our fast-paced environment, flexibility is essential. Children with life skills are better able to adapt to new circumstances and overcome obstacles. 5. Establish Healthy Relationships: Establishing solid and enduring ties with others requires emotional intelligence, empathy, and respect. Preschool Advantage: A Nurturing Ground for Life Skills Preschools and daycares no longer focus only on academics. As 'today's educators,' we recognize that young children require a well-rounded foundation that incorporates important life skills. These abilities not only assist kids in navigating preschool and kindergarten, but also prepare them for future academic and life success. They are integrated into the everyday routines and activities of the preschool or daycare. Teachers, for example, might utilize playtime to encourage sharing and taking turns, or lunch to teach fundamental self-care and table manners. When selecting an institution, look for programs that provide chances for: 1. Dramatic Play: Role-playing helps youngsters improve communication, negotiating, and problem-solving abilities. 2. Group Activities: Collaborative projects and activities promote collaboration, leadership, and sharing. 3. Creative Expression: Art, music, and storytelling help youngsters develop critical thinking and express themselves creatively. 4. Problem-Solving Opportunities: Encouraging youngsters to take on problems independently, with assistance as required, fosters resilience and problem-solving abilities. 5. Open Communication: Teachers foster talks about emotions, dispute resolution, and navigating different circumstances. Sparking Life Skills at Home: As a toddler parent, you have an important role in developing your child's life skills. Here are a few ways to start: 1. Be a role model by demonstrating effective communication, collaboration, and adaptability in daily encounters. Remember, your youngster is watching everything you do! 2. Encourage creativity via playtime, including games, puzzles, and open-ended activities. Incorporating interactive story time is an excellent approach to teach via play. 3. Foster Healthy Expression: Create a secure environment for your kid to express their emotions and engage in open, honest talks. You are their secure zone during their developing years, and this has a significant influence on the way children are shaped.
4. Embrace Mistakes: Treat failures as learning opportunities and urge your youngster to try again. Mistakes do not indicate failure. There is space for growth! 5. Encourage collaboration by including your kid in age-appropriate duties, such as setting the table and tidying up after playing. This focuses on collaboration and shared responsibility. By emphasizing life skills alongside academics, you are preparing your child to flourish in a VUCA environment. Remember that it is a continual journey, not a one-time destination. Life skills are developed throughout the course of a lifetime via learning, developing, and experiencing what life has to offer at various stages. Look for signs in everyday settings that your child is learning how to have a good effect on the world around him. That alone is reason to rejoice and applaud!

In a VUCA world, hierarchical organizations must prioritize ethical behavior to ensure the well-being of their employees. The Utilitarian theory, while well-intentioned, can be exploited by those seeking to advance their own interests. It is essential to recognize the consequences of unethical behavior and take proactive steps to promote a culture of transparency, accountability, and empathy. By doing so, organizations can create a positive work environment, where employees feel valued, respected, and empowered to thrive. #lucianosantini #commonsenseconsulting #empathy #utilatriununtheory

Preparing for the HIR Academic Writing Contest
Tumblr media
Three times a year, the Harvard International Review holds the HIR Academic Writing Contest (HIR AWC): an online, international writing competition where high school students are challenged to talk about global affairs. In the HIR AWC, students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their writing skills and bring light to lesser-known social issues worldwide. In doing so, they get the chance to receive an HIR Certificate and recognition on the HIR’s website, as well as an impressive accomplishment to include in their university applications.
But how does one join and excel in the HIR AWC? If you’re looking for key info regarding the contest or exploring some tips for acing your essay, you’ve come to the right place! In this article, we’ll be running down all the things you need to know for the Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest.
Contest Dates
As mentioned before, there are three unique cycles for the Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest. There’s the Spring Cycle, Summer Cycle, and Fall/Winter Cycle.
Remember that you’ll need to register and pay a fee of $40 first before you can be eligible to submit an article before the deadline. Take note as well that admissions are done on a rolling basis, and capacity for the contest is limited, so do your best to join as soon as registration opens.
For 2024, here are the key dates you must remember. So, if you’ve missed the window of entry for one cycle, don’t worry: you still have a chance to participate in the next season!
Spring 2024
Registration: On a rolling basis
Article Submission Deadline: May 31, 2024
HIR Defense Day: June 29, 2024
Summer 2024
Registration: Opened May 2024
Article Submission Deadline: August 31, 2024
HIR Defense Day: October 5, 2024
Fall 2024 / Winter 2024
Registration: TBA
Article Submission Deadline: January 2, 2025
HIR Defense Day: February 5, 2025
Submission Guidelines
In this contest, your main goal is to submit a short-form essay on a topic related to international affairs. The article must be strictly around 800 to 1,200 words. The essayists with the best articles will then be selected to participate in a virtual HIR Defense Day. If you’re selected as a finalist, you’ll be asked to give a 15-minute presentation and oral defense to Harvard International Review judges. So, you’re not just demonstrating your writing skills in the HIR AWC: you’re also showcasing your critical thinking abilities, presentation skills, and articulation of thought.
For the 2024 Summer Cycle, you must choose from two themes:
Inequalities in a VUCA (Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity) World
Global Challenges and Collective Actions
And, you can focus on international affairs from either of these categories:
Agriculture
Cybersecurity
Defense
Education
Employment & Immigration
Energy & Environment
Business, Finance & Economics
Public Health
Science & Technology
Space
Trade
Transportation
Law & Diplomacy
This is not a strict list, however – you may also explore other fields related to global issues if applicable.

Tips for Acing the Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest
Now that you’re caught up in the key details of the Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest, let’s discuss some tips and notes on how you can bring your best to the competition! Here are a few things you should remember while preparing your draft for the HIR AWC.
1. Do your research
Do your research – and do it diligently, thoroughly, and extensively. Allot as much time as you need: some award-winning students spend weeks researching and writing for their essays in the Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest. And try exploring different sources! Read economic magazines, study news sites from around the world, check out international research journals, watch (credible) video documentaries, and so on. Widening your understanding of your topic can deliver some huge returns when you start writing your essay.
2. Expand your horizons
As the Harvard International Review puts it, they’re looking for an “analytically-backed perspective for an under-appreciated global topic.” When choosing your topic for the HIR AWC, then, it’s good to think out of the box and delve into a lesser-known, underreported issue at an international level. As much as possible, don’t limit yourself to issues around a singular country as well, like the US, UK, or China. Go and visit the news sites of other countries and read up on their current affairs! Visit school libraries and sign up for online newsletters! You can even consult online with tutors of international politics to see what they think would be a worthwhile essay idea.
3. Understand the evaluation rubric
In the Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest, your essay will be graded from a score of 0 to 55. This score is the cumulative total of 11 sections, with a maximum of 5 points for each section.
It’s best to keep in mind the evaluation rubrics of the HIR so that you’ll know how to properly draft your essay to meet their standards. Here’s the official guide from the Harvard International Review. But, if you want the gist of it, this is what they say for you to have a grade of 5/5 in each section:
Topic - The topic is underappreciated in mainstream media, highly relevant to international affairs, and clearly connects back to the theme.
Introduction - The introduction pulls the reader in with a “hook” and effectively sets up the author’s argument.
Structure/Transition - The submission employs topic sentences that are concise and appropriate; transitions between paragraphs are smooth and natural. The article has a clear logical flow of ideas that guides the reader through the premise.
Evidence - The author consistently provides evidence that is highly relevant and compelling.
Overall Coherence of Argument - The argument mirrors that of a sophisticated analyst or academic.
Tone - The tone is consistent with previously published HIR articles.
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar - There are 0-2 mistakes related to spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Adherence to the HIR Style Guide - There is perfect or near-perfect adherence to the HIR style guide.
Citations - All factual claims are backed by a citation from a reliable source; all ideas that are not the author’s are properly attributed. Citations are made via hyperlinks.
Overall Ease of Reading - The submission is easy to read and is near the writing level of an HIR article.
As you can see, the Harvard International Review judges meticulously consider a wide range of metrics when evaluating your article: from its topic and tone to even your grammar use and writing style, every part of your essay plays a part in your overall score.
4. Avoid using AI
Take note! The Harvard International Review strictly prohibits the use of AI. The organization highly emphasizes originality of thought and self-directed research in your essay. We also encourage you to do this with your own words and research! But, if you’re feeling worried about your work, looking for someone to bounce off ideas with, or just searching for a guide to proofread your essay structure and grammar, you can try working with agencies and/or tutors online. Education platforms also offer personalized tutoring sessions where you can consult with experts to further elevate your work.
Summary
If you’re looking for a contest that challenges your writing abilities and allows you to explore your interest in international politics, then the Harvard International Review Academic Writing Contest will be a great fit for you! Try your hand at researching a topic for them and registering during one of their cycles. Who knows – you may even be selected as a finalist! If you’re an HIR AWC contestant reading this, then we hope our tips have been able to help you prepare and come up with a topic. Still, looking for more rigorous guidance and personalized advice in editing your essay? We recommend studying with online tutors and education agencies. We hope our article has helped you!

Journeying Together: A Reflection on the 2024 CSDPA Conference
As the 2024 CSDPA Conference draws to a close, we find ourselves not at the end of a journey, but at a significant waypoint on a path of continuous growth, learning, and transformation. The theme of this year's gathering, "Flourishing Future: Designing a Better Normal," served as both a call to action and a vision for what Catholic education can and must become in an increasingly complex and unpredictable world.
Navigating Complexity: The Challenge of Our Time
In today's world, characterized by volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), our roles as educators extend far beyond the traditional boundaries of teaching. We are now tasked with equipping our students with the capabilities necessary to navigate a rapidly changing environment, where wellbeing is not just an outcome but a fundamental building block for a thriving life.
As I presented the opening keynote, "Navigating Complexity," it was clear that our responsibility as educators is to guide our students through these uncertain times by focusing on the development of wellbeing capabilities. At LCI Melbourne, we have embedded this approach through our Student Success Strategy Framework, which is centred around amplifying student voice, agency, and advocacy. This framework ensures that students are not only heard but are empowered to take ownership of their learning and to advocate for themselves and others. By fostering these capabilities, we help students build the resilience and adaptability they need to thrive in a complex world.
This keynote laid the foundation for the conference, setting the stage for the exploration of how we can all contribute to designing a better normal for our students, one where they can thrive in the face of complexity.
Reimagining Education: Beyond the Conventional
Following the opening keynote, Peter Hutton took us on a journey of reimagining education. His vision for a reimagined educational landscape challenged us to look beyond conventional paradigms and to envision a future where students are active participants in their own learning journey. Peter emphasised the need for us to be comfortable with discomfort, to embrace the unknown, and to lead with both courage and compassion.
Peter's vision for education, which is lived at the Global Village Learning, is one that requires us to venture into new territories, to challenge the status quo, and to create spaces where every student can thrive. His call to action was clear: We must break free from outdated educational models and embrace innovative practices that place student wellbeing at the forefront. This is not a task for the faint-hearted; it demands that we, as educators, are willing to wrestle with the complexities of our times and lead with conviction.
This theme of venturing into the unknown was echoed throughout the conference, particularly in the concurrent case study workshops. These sessions highlighted the incredible work being done in Catholic schools across Western Australia to support both student and staff wellbeing. From mental health initiatives to strategies for creating safe and inclusive environments, these workshops demonstrated that when we prioritise wellbeing, we create the conditions for genuine flourishing.
Forging a Path to Flourishing: Limitless Possibilities
On the final day of the conference, Melanie O’Leary further deepened our understanding of what it means to create a flourishing future. Her keynote, centred around her K to 12 model "Limitless Possibilities," offered a powerful blueprint for how we can unlock the boundless potential within our students. Melanie's model is rooted in the belief that every child has the capacity to achieve greatness, provided they are given the right conditions to do so. She reminded us that wellbeing is not an add-on; it is the foundation upon which all successful learning is built.
Melanie’s work in social entrepreneurship within the Catholic Education South Australia (CESA) system is a testament to what can be achieved when we place wellbeing at the heart of education. Her insights provided a clear path forward, one that requires us to be intentional in our efforts to create environments where students can explore, discover, and ultimately, flourish.
Leading with Ferocious Warmth: Tracey Ezard’s Toolkit
As we continued our journey together, Tracey Ezard equipped us with the tools needed to lead with what she calls "Ferocious Warmth." Her concept, which balances the head and heart in leadership, is crucial for those of us who are committed to driving change in education. Tracey’s keynote was a masterclass in the art of leadership, showing us how to connect deeply with our teams while also having the courage to face challenges head-on.
Tracey’s approach is not just about leading others; it’s about leading ourselves with integrity and compassion. She reminded us that the journey towards a better normal requires leaders who are both fierce in their determination and warm in their relationships. It is this balance that will allow us to create educational environments where both students and staff can thrive.
The Power of Journeying Together
Throughout the conference, it was heartening to witness the positive manner in which all those present engaged openly and actively in the keynotes, workshops, and activities. The power of the spaces in between—during morning tea, lunch, and the conference dinner—was palpable. It was in these moments that the real work of the conference often took place, as participants continued to wrestle with the big ideas presented, journeying together in a discourse of head, heart, and hands.
These conversations and reflections, shared over coffee, meal or a drink, were as crucial to the conference's success as the formal sessions themselves. They allowed us to dig deeper into the complexities we face, to support one another in our shared mission, and to envision the ways in which we can bring these ideas back to our schools and communities.
The Journey Continues: A Call to Action
As we reflect on the insights, inspirations, and connections gained over the past few days, one thing is clear: our work is far from over. The journey towards designing a better normal for our students, one where they can truly flourish, continues. We must take what we have learned and apply it in our own schools and communities, pushing boundaries and leading with the courage and compassion that our students deserve.
In the words of St. Mary of the Cross, Australia’s only saint,
"Never see a need without doing something about it."
This powerful reminder calls us to action, urging us to be the change-makers our world so desperately needs. Let this hope sustain us as we move forward, reaching out and connecting with others, to be today’s living water and to bring Christ to birth in a world that is more just and loving.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Lucio, Sam, and the entire CSDPA Executive team for their courage in engaging with future-focused presenters. Their collective commitment to designing a better normal has been instrumental in making this conference a success. Together, we have laid the groundwork for a flourishing future, and I am grateful for their leadership and vision.
Thank you for your dedication, your passion, and your commitment to shaping the future of Catholic education. Together, we will continue to journey towards a flourishing future, where every student can live life to the fullest.
