New York’s VRSTY are dropping more R&B infused post hardcore in the form of their 4th full length album Levitate. VRSTY were one of my lucky random Spotify finds, and I’ve been absolutely hooked ever since. Before I even start can I just say 15 songs man, you don’t see that a lot these days, got some work to do here.

They’ve got Monuments frontman Andy Cizek to lend them a hand on “Kill The Rich”, it’s like a match made in heaven, eerie undertones, low but crisp riffs, crushing waves of tones through the chorus before Cizek brings chaos and growls to thump the point home. I adore “Dangerous”, that riff rapidly smacking you in the face, then I will admit I did think this was a Michael Jackson cover when I heard “It’s close to midnight”, but whist it’s got the same spooky feel about it, it’s much more sinister and dramatic particularly when the violins hit, nice big drop at the end and I’m beyond satisfied. “Fuck You Forever” is an anthem, relatable feelings and thoughts, stunning vocals and a nice bit of a deep bassy string work. I’m always up for a good mash up, but I couldn’t get into “Black & Blue” with Monochromatic Black, I just didn’t feel like the styles meshed well together. Where as “Powerless” with ballerina turned pop artist LEXXE is much more of a match, her breathtaking and strong vocals bounce very well off Valera’s, very strong song on the album. It’s full of enticing hooks and gorgeous melodies, full of different emotions and struggles, it often sways between poppy and metal like a wave.

I think it’s good they’ve put so many songs on the album, it’s let them have a lot of space to have a play around but still have enough for each of their drastically different fans to leave them satisfied. Certainly incredible bang for your buck, I will say I am a sucker for the heavier ones, that’s my jam, pray they do retain it as they progress!

INSPIRATION. Well, there just happens to be this movie… Ever since @ulfhrafnx showed me Near Dark I have been obsessed. I used to be a fairly active writer, both on Tumblr and on my own, but had a long hiatus. Something about the movie clicked with me and after some encouragement I just started writing again. I get most of my general inspiration just from “supposing”. Kind of how Stephen King describes it. A scenario pops into my head and I find the first sentence, then the scene sort of unravels. Writers like King, Shirley Jackson, Clive Barker, Joe Hill, who also write with vivid imagery really spark my imagination. When someone can change my mood with a turn of phrase I find that very powerful. It may just be silly exposition on a website, but if I can make people see/feel/hear the things I describe (sorry about some of them), that is everything I want. My base inspiration for writing is projecting the scene in my mind into other people’s. I want them to get to the end, sit back and be able to have gone to that same place with me. If/when that happens, I know I can keep writing.

STORY BEHIND URL. Lady said “I’m surprised it wasn’t taken”. Honestly, they are just very key Severen words. He is The Savage One, he is a cowboy. There you have it.

I was asked what got me into photography, more specifically concert photography, and what bands I’d wanna photograph.

I was asked this question on my other page but I wanted to answer it here too but in more detail.

I was really into making videos on my phone and loved editing. I was always recording my friends and making videos with them.

I ended up getting myself a little hand held camera and started taking more photos. My dad gave me some old cameras that my grandpa had and I would take photos of my nephew and just started to get more into photography.

My dad got me my first "professional" digital camera (which was a Nikon) for Christmas around my freshman year of High School.

In High School there was a Yearbook class I was apart of my Junior and Senior year. I got to help design the year book and take photos for school events. I was able to use their cameras, which were Canons) and I really liked them a lot more.

A friend in the class had a canon he was looking to sell so I sold my Nikon to a friend and bought the Canon.

To this day I still use that Canon. It has been my favorite from the start. It works great in low lighting, so perfect for concert photography.

Towards the end of my last year of High School my Yearbook teacher gave me a number to a photographer that was looking to hire an assistant. I ended up getting hired and he had his own studio. I worked along side him for a few years. I still can’t get the hang of setting up lighting 😂 For some reason it’s just something that never stuck in my head. We also didn’t use the studio as much.

When I stopped working with the photographer I started going to more concerts and realizing that’s what I would be happy doing. I love music. I love going to shows. I am more in my element doing concert photography than anything else.

I had photographed local bands and bands while in the crowd.

I am acquaintances with one of my favorite bands Framing Hanley that let me photograph them and shared my photography on their pages. 

The first show I photographed professionally was for the first Trinity of Terror tour which consisted of Ice Nine Kills, Motionless in White, and Black Veil Brides (also Lilith Czar for that round).

I’m acquaintances with the band Of Virtue and they gave me a photography pass to shoot one of their shows that was near me. There were other bands (The Funeral Portrait & Versus Me) there that I got to photograph and meet after.

I also got permission to shoot for the band BRKN LOVE and they were playing with Dead Poet Society. Got to meet them after as well.

I also was able to get a Photography pass to shoot for Puddle Of Mudd.

But like I said, I’ve photographed a lot of bands while in the crowd —

Highly Suspect, Badflower, VRSTY, Underøath, Skillet… there’s a lot. I’ve also seen a lot more bands 😂

I would love to work will all of them, since I only “professionally” worked with only a few, I’d love to work with all I mentioned above professionally.

I’d also love to photograph Bad Omens, Papa Roach, 30 Seconds To Mars, Twenty One Pilots, Paramore, Yungblud. The list can go on… Any band I’ve enjoyed listening to I’d love to photograph. Anyone with an amazing stage performance and/or a lot of energy.
