"In west England, a series of hills cloaked in heather and wildflowers are the target of a national restoration project that is already seeing success.

Similar to the story GNN reported on last week about the rewilding along the south coast and South Downs National Park, Sussex, volunteers are seeding old hay fields with native wildflowers and replanting traditional hedgerows to ensure wildlife can move freely through the region.

The region is called the Shropshire Hills, which by British law is designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and is managed and controlled so this beauty can endure. But while the area is indeed beautiful, the valley between the sections of hills known as Long Mynd and Stiperstones has for decades been under heavy hay cultivation, with farmers plowing up meadows and planting fast-growing commodity grasses.

As part of a project by the UK’s National Trust called Stepping Stones, volunteers have been working with landowners and local councils to turn some of these meadows back over to the wildlife, creating corridors of habitat to allow species like the bilberry bumblebee, pine marten, and curlews to move freely from hilltop to valley floor and back to hilltop.

Charlie Bell, project manager for Stepping Stones, told the BBC that the project is one part of an overall mission that aims to restore 97% of meadows that have been lost in the UK over the last 100 years.

“Many old meadows have been plowed up and re-seeded with more productive mixes of grasses,” she told the national broadcaster. “Fertilizers are often added to increase the growth of these dominant productive grasses, at the expense of finer grass species and wildflowers.”

Jinlye Meadows, on the Long Mynd side of the valley, is now thriving with native wildflower species like mountain pansy, and volunteers have recorded the area is thriving with bilberry bumblebees which are rare and in decline.

In particular, the meadows were covered last year in yellow rattle, also known as the “meadowmaker,” a key part of Ms. Bell’s strategy for restoring meadows. This native species attaches itself to the roots of grasses, slowing, but not sabotaging, their growth. This allows not only the flower to grow, but space for all manner of other flowers to grow as the grasses’ growth is [slowed down]."

The Midlands Trashion Show 2024, held during Plastic Free July, served as a reminder of the pervasive issue of single-use plastic pollution. This year, 130 students demonstrated their creativity and commitment to sustainability by re-purposing discarded plastic into remarkable fashion statements.

Charlene Chinembiri, inspired by videos posted online, created an ensemble from a feed bag and wool, assisted by her fashion-enthusiast sister.

Thandoluhle Khumalo, from Lions River, turned mealie meal bags from her school feeding programme into a dress with her mother's help, showcasing the potential of everyday waste.

Standout creations included Naledi Duma's party dress, Hannah Zunckel's intricate bodice made of metal ring pulls with a CD skirt, and Alwonde Mpangase's pleated frock.

Laila Gangerdine captured the title of Trashion Queen with a detailed dress and headdress made from card and plastic, while Emihle Sithole's layered newspaper skirt earned her the Pompom Princess title.

Dineo Hlatswayo's checkerboard dress, which required her to rise at 4am to travel from the Drakensberg, was awarded a prize for its elegance.

Boys also made a significant impact at the event, with Thokozani Makhaye in his pink rapper outfit and Zekhethelo Dlamini's astronaut costume drawing attention. The wire car category saw Kiara Hansraj win for her neatly finished, spray-painted vehicle, Zanokuhle Sithole for the best suspension, and Lukhona Sishi for the best overall design.

Prizes for winners in various categories were practical items promoting environmental care, such as bamboo toothbrushes, wooden combs, and washable menstrual products. These eco-friendly alternatives highlight the need for sustainable choices to reduce plastic waste.

A busy month for your boy!

Good evening!

I've of course been pretty quiet the last month - as I said in my last email, I expected to go pretty quiet as I went through the moving process, and I have now left Ireland and moved back to the UK.

I'm currently Jean-Ralphio voice ~technically homeless~ as I get all my ducks in a row with my apartment paperwork and move through the conveyancing process, but once the keys are in my hand, I'll be writing about and doing TikToks of the decorating process as I go!

Obviously because I'm currently going between friends and family and juggling paperwork, I'm not writing as much at the moment, as I predicted I would be, but I will be making an appearance at BristolCon next month!

BristolCon is a 1-day literary sci-fi and fantasy convention in Bristol City, this year on Saturday October 21st - there are panels and discussions, readings and signings, a marketplace, and so forth.

As well as taking part in some of the panels and maybe reading from my own work, I'll be selling copies of Heart of Stone and Gerald Poole and the Pirates, as well as a bunch of my badges, and of course I'll be able to sign anything you bring along, whether it's a book you buy from me on the day or a copy you bring with you! I'll be able to take payment in cash or by card on the day!

Julian has been a featured voice on several shows including The Sheridan Tapes, Tales From the Fringes of Reality, and Tales of the Echowood. In his free time, you can find him sinking hours into video games and animated shows without blinking.

Kira Apple is back as our favorite incorrigible undead Narrator (and Mary... whose role deepens this season in an exciting, spoilery way).

Kira Apple is a part-time voice actor and full-time cat wrangler. Her voice work includes the role of Jack St. James in Superstition, Katya Harper in Electromancy, and Cybilene in Inn Between. Marlon Dance-Hooi joins us this season as Chief Inspector Turnbubble!

Marlon is a Eurasian Australian Actor and Voice-over Artist. He has been performing in some form or other since early childhood. His breakout role in the King and I (alongside the legendary Hayley Mills) instilled a love of the craft and a passion for theatre. He continued on stage in multiple South Australian productions throughout high school and college, and after completing degrees in Arts and Law embarked upon a professional acting career. Moving to Sydney and then Singapore, he worked on everything from live theatre and Fringe shows to feature films and television, appearing on four Singaporean TV series and several award winning short films. Throughout this period he worked tirelessly on his craft, tutored by working actors Sam Haft, Chum Ehelopola and Kamil Haque and learning Meisner, Adler, Chekov, Improv, Suzuki and Meyerhold techniques. Marlon is also a skilled impressionist and has lent his smooth, articulate and versatile voice to 8 animated series, including the award-winning Netflix show Oddbods, and several animated feature films, in addition to dozens of ads, corporate videos, podcasts and animated shorts. In his spare time he is an avid roleplayer, creating fantasy worlds, as well as a fan of manga and speculative fiction.

This is the second story I’m posting about a transwoman sexually exploiting or trying exploit children in just one day.

A trans-identified male who was convicted for the possession, production, and distribution of horrific child abuse materials has been released from prison early in Ireland, despite not being legally allowed to even be in the country. 

Bruno Binda De Souza, who also uses the name Bruna Meirelles, was released from prison on October 26 after being caught with “thousands of depraved child abuse images.” 

De Souza, 32, had previously pleaded guilty to four counts of possession of child pornography, five counts of production of child pornography, and one count of distribution of child pornography on three dates between December 2017 and July 2020. The materials were found on all of his electronic devices, including his phones and computer.

As reported by Sunday World, during the trial, the court heard how De Souza was introduced to child abuse material by a former client while using the drug crystal meth. 

After viewing it for the first time, De Souza reportedly became interested and downloaded significant amounts of the material. The court was told that De Souza began distributing sexual images of children via WhatsApp and Facebook, and had engaged in sexual conversations about children with other pedophiles on the internet.

His crimes were uncovered as part of an operation into child abuse material called Operation Ketch. Gardaí, Ireland’s national police force, were notified of De Souza’s activity by the US National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Guardaí then launched an investigation into De Souza and seized multiple devices. 

On one phone, 2,464 illegal images were uncovered, with 752 images and videos being found on another phone. Additional evidence was uncovered on his MacBook.

Detective Garda Martin Allen told the court that some of the child abuse images found were “unique” in that Gardaí working the Cyber Crime division had not come across them before. Police often cross-reference child sexual exploitation images against catalogues of media that have been uncovered in the past in order to assist in the gathering of information of importance, including tracking distribution and locating victims. 

De Souza, who is a Brazilian national, was based in Dublin at the time of his crimes and, during the criminal proceedings, his visa expired. He was expected to be deported upon his release, but has reportedly been allowed to freely leave Midlands Prison and enter the community.

Prior to his arrest, De Souza had been active as a prostitute in Ireland, charging 250 Euros per hour. Operating on Irish escort websites under the name “TS Pocahontas” since 2011, he earned thousands of Euros per week. His profile, which has since been removed, boasted of De Souza’s penis size. 

Despite the horrendous nature of the materials De Souza was found with and distributed, presiding Judge Martin Nolan portrayed De Souza sympathetically.

“I don’t think she is a bad person but, she committed serious offenses and the court must punish her for her misbehavior,” Judge Nolan said, using feminine pronouns to refer to De Souza.

Judge Nolan also stated that De Souza had no previous convictions and had co-operated with the Gardaí in handing over passwords to his devices. 

In 2020, Nolan sentenced De Souza to only three years in prison, but backdated it to when he was first placed in custody. His October 26 release indicates he was turned loose just 2 years into the sentence. 

While in prison, De Souza had reportedly demanded a hairstylist or aesthetician be sent in to visit him, but his request was rejected.

Whilst either being high as hell from smoking weed and sniffing the Coco whilst dealing with other dancers who would constantly criticise Hollie May by her appearance, style & fashion sense to even trying to get under her skin for a fight creating constant conflict. Of course! Hollie doesn't give in that easily with her ambitious self focusing on the writing & dancing. This experience took Hollie further in life when it came to the stage self confidence owning everything of her own.

Thousands of people across rural parts of Oxfordshire and North East Staffordshire are set to benefit from new lightning-fast broadband thanks to £43 million of UK government funding, in a move to tackle the long-term challenges facing hard-working people and businesses in the UK. Backed by £26.5 million, around 10,000 homes and businesses in rural Oxfordshire communities including Stoke Row, Somerton and North Aston will benefit from fast and reliable broadband connections. Meanwhile, £16.5 million will see around 6,000 rural properties in North East Staffordshire including Longnor, Marchington and Alstonefield receive internet speeds more than 30 times faster than superfast broadband. With gigabit-capable broadband, these households will no longer have to struggle with limited bandwidth, and businesses will be able to improve their productivity with none of the disruptions associated with ageing copper networks, helping to build a more dynamic economy that delivers prosperity across every corner of the country. Having the fastest connections also means the UK is fit-for-the-future, with broadband infrastructure designed to deliver for people’s needs for decades to come. The investment forms part of the government’s £5 billion Project Gigabit, which aims to ensure people have the same access to high-speed broadband wherever they live, work and study. From the Midlands to the South East of England, work will now get underway to survey thousands of premises in rural villages and communities, with spades in the ground expected by spring next year.
