I know I haven’t made a 2024 version of the Vendée Globe PowerPoint yet and I’m sorry for that. I had to work a 6-day week last week and I spent a lot of this week getting over some digestive issues. When I tried to unzip the folder I had the original document saved in today on my laptop, my computer said the file was invalid. But I can absolutely try to make a version of it one way or another, since I think collectively the 2016 and 2020 versions represent the most popular original content this blog has ever produced.
(Did any of you reblog the 2020 or 2016 versions for me to reference in case I can’t get into the original file?)

One week on exactly since Nico Lunven (IMOCA Holcim-PRB) set a new solo 24-hours monohull distance record on the second day of the 2024-25 Vendée Globe, Paprec Arkéa solo skipper Yoann Richomme dramatically bettered that mark on the Vendée Globe, before running out of track and hitting the buffers as he and the other leaders of the solo non stop race around the world slowed into the Doldrums.
Richomme’s pace would surpass the same record set by Nicolas Lunven on the second day of the 2024-25 Vendée Globe, covering 546.60 nautical miles in 24 hours.
The contrast could not have been more marked. Richomme sailed a distance of 551.84 nautical miles in the 24 hours up to 0830hrs in near perfect conditions. But a few short hours later he was all but stopped, floating in almost millpond like winds that had ‘welcomed’ him to the Doldrums.
Reflecting the speed and efficiency of his latest generation Finot Conq-Coch design, on his record sprint windspeeds were relatively modest a around 17 knots but, emerging from a high pressure ridge of light winds, the seas were very flat which allowed the double solo Transat winner to push hard in relative comfort. He betters Lunven’s record by 5.24 miles (all to be ratified by WSSRC).

Patience is a virtue which is being tested for the skippers of the Vendée Globe fleet as they continue to try and escape from a wide band of light and variable winds at the latitude of the Cape Verde islands.
The leaders are making low double figures boat speeds this morning and so they are going to be crossing the Equator at around two days slower than on the last two editions. Whilst the NE’ly trade winds are forecast to build slightly today they still have nearly 900 miles to the Equator. The record stands at 9 days and 7 hours set on the 2016 edition by British skipper Alex Thomson who also crossed first again in 2020 at 9 days 23 hours.
Jean Le Cam (Tout commence en Finistère – Amror lux) picked up speed yesterday morning after languishing in the calm close to the African coast and his gains have continued against the fleet as he converges from the east to lead the fleet once again this morning. The race veteran is more than 500 miles to the east of Sam Goodchild (VULNERABLE) and is closing to pass to the south of the island archipelago at around 13 knots this morning. That said Le Cam will have to pass the lee of the volcanic islands in a more disturbed airflow, not least dealing with the windbreak effect of the towering Pico de Fogo which is nearly 3000 metres high.
And the two skippers who have been forced to make serious repairs in recent days are in much better shape. Louis Burton (Bureau Vallée) has spent two days and two long nights repairing the cracks on the deck and topsides of his boat where the compression load from the jockey pole caused some quite serious damage https://youtu.be/HosH7YNY1Sk.  He has used had to reinforce the hull side with spare carbon battens for the mainsail and use carbon cloth strips to reinforce the damaged area.  He has dropped to 24th place, but – making 15 knots this morning – Burton is not hanging about in his chase to catch the leaders.
And Hungary’s Szabolcs Weöres is also back in full race mode after making a major repair to his mainsail in the safety of Las Palmas, Grand Canaria. He left yesterday evening between 17 and 18hrs but his biggest problem is trying to catch the fleet is that he is sailing upwind. But he’s in good spirits.

Nicolas Lunven, the skipper of the IMOCA Holcim-PRB, broke the outright solo monohull 24-hour record on the second day of the 2024-25 Vendée Globe. Opting for a more westerly route than the fleet, he covered 546.60 nautical miles in 24 hours (pending official ratification).
Lunven’s pace would surpass the same record set by Thomas Ruyant during the 2024 Retour à la Base event (539.58 nm/ 22.48 knot avg.).
This boat also holds the outright monohull 24-hour record, with skipper Kevin Escoffier and crew covering 640.48 nm in the 5th leg of The Ocean Race 2022-23, with an average speed of 26.68 knots.

Britain’s Sam Goodchild (VULNERABLE) has taken the lead in the Vendée Globe solo race around the world as the leaders of the 40 boat fleet descend south down the Iberian peninsula. Passing the length of Portugal today, Goodchild -pursued by French ace Charlie Dalin – who is 22 nautical miles behind – was passing Lisbon this afternoon and should be at the latitude of Gibraltar tonight.
The British skipper, who is racing his first Vendée Globe, has benefited so far by taking a course slightly closer to the coast than Dalin and those chasing him, he has been dicing with possible calmer patches, but sailing fewer miles and making slightly fewer manoeuvres than his rivals. This afternoon he was repositioning himself to try close the separation from the French skipper who is widely tipped as the pre-race favourite.
The 40 boat fleet have now largely passed the strong winds and big seas off Cape Finisterre, the gnarly NW corner of Spain, and are heading south today the temperatures are rising and the wind conditions becoming easier meaning rest will be possible.
For the moment it seems like Goodchild might have outsmarted the wily Dalin, one of the master meteo strategists in this fleet. The Brit has gone well in both light and strong conditions which have marked the first two days of the race which started on Sunday out of Les Sables d’Olonne.
But ahead the breezes are set to be lighter as they gybe down a narrow corridor of pressure and it seems there might be the chance for the boats behind to bring down the wind from behind. Nonetheless it is an important morale boost for the 35-year-old Goodchild who attended his first Vendée Globe as an 18-year-old nipper working with British skipper Mike Golding.

Normally, the first Vendée Globe boat to cross the Equator is a big deal, but because these are anything but normal times, a huge chunk of the fleet slipped across in the past day with only a belated press release.
