Tips for Finding Your First VFX Job After School
Breaking into the visual effects (VFX) industry after completing your VFX course can be both exciting and challenging. With the right strategies and preparation, you can increase your chances of landing your first job in this dynamic field. Here are some essential tips to help you navigate the job market and find your first VFX position after graduating from a VFX Institute.
1. Capitalize on Your Education from a VFX Institute
Your education at a VFX Institute has provided you with a solid foundation in visual effects. Whether you attended a specialized VFX course or participated in hands-on VFX classes, make sure to leverage this knowledge in your job search. Highlight the skills and techniques you’ve learned, such as 3D modeling, animation, and compositing, which are critical in the VFX industry. Employers value candidates who can effectively apply what they’ve learned from their visual effect course to real-world projects.
2. Create a Compelling Portfolio
A well-crafted portfolio is crucial when applying for VFX jobs. Ensure your portfolio showcases a diverse range of skills and projects from your VFX classes and any additional work you’ve done. Include examples of your best work from your visual effect course, such as animations, visual effects sequences, and any freelance or personal projects. A strong portfolio demonstrates your ability to tackle various challenges and your proficiency in visual effect design.
3. Network Within the Industry
Networking is a powerful tool in the VFX industry. Use the connections you’ve made through your VFX Institute and VFX classes to your advantage. Attend industry events, join professional groups, and participate in online forums dedicated to visual effects. Engaging with industry professionals and fellow graduates can provide valuable insights, job leads, and recommendations. Networking helps you stay informed about job openings and trends in visual effect design.
4. Gain Practical Experience
Experience is essential in the VFX industry. Look for internships, freelance opportunities, or entry-level positions that allow you to apply the skills you acquired from your VFX course. Many VFX Institute programs offer internship placements as part of their curriculum, which can be a great starting point. Hands-on experience helps you build your resume, develop your portfolio, and understand the workflow and expectations in a professional setting.
5. Stay Updated with Industry Trends
The field of visual effects is constantly evolving with new technologies and techniques. To remain competitive, stay updated with the latest industry trends and software developments. Follow industry news, subscribe to relevant publications, and participate in workshops or additional VFX classes if possible. This ongoing education ensures that your skills are current and aligned with industry standards.
6. Apply for Entry-Level Positions
When searching for your first VFX job, focus on entry-level roles that match your skill set. Positions such as junior VFX artist, production assistant, or assistant compositor are great starting points. Tailor your resume and cover letter to highlight your education from a VFX Institute, as well as the specific skills you developed in your visual effect course. Emphasize how your experience in visual effect design has prepared you for the role.
7. Utilize Job Boards and Professional Websites
Job boards and professional websites are valuable resources for finding VFX job openings. Websites like LinkedIn, Indeed, and specialized VFX job boards frequently list opportunities suitable for recent graduates. Regularly check these platforms and set up job alerts to stay informed about new openings. Applying to multiple positions increases your chances of finding a job that fits your skills and interests.
8. Prepare for Interviews
Once you secure an interview, be ready to demonstrate your skills and knowledge. Prepare to discuss your portfolio, explain your creative process, and showcase the techniques you learned from your VFX course. Interviewers will be interested in how your background from a VFX Institute has prepared you for the role. Practice common interview questions and be ready to discuss how you’ve applied your visual effect design skills in various projects.
9. Seek Feedback and Continue Improving
After interviews or portfolio reviews, seek constructive feedback from industry professionals. Use this feedback to refine your skills, improve your portfolio, and address any gaps in your knowledge. Continuous improvement is essential for success in the VFX field. Consider taking additional VFX classes or working on personal projects to enhance your skills and stay competitive.
10. Remain Persistent and Positive
Finding your first job in the VFX industry may take time, and facing rejection is part of the process. Stay persistent, keep applying for positions, and maintain a positive attitude. Your dedication and perseverance, combined with the skills and knowledge gained from your VFX Institute and visual effect course, will eventually lead to success.
By following these tips and making the most of your education and experience, you’ll be well-positioned to secure your first VFX job and start a rewarding career in visual effects.

Visual Effects Trends to Watch Out for in 2024
Tumblr media
2024 is anticipated to be a highly exciting year for visual effects. In 2023 we saw a rapid shift in the VFX industry with the expected boom of Artificial Intelligence. Today, AI and other new tools and technologies make a huge impact, including in the filmmaking processes like the screenplay, visual concept, VFX creation, editing, and sound. Artificial Intelligence will be employed almost everywhere. This will be an exciting change that will make storytelling tools to start becoming more accessible to all, while also fostering a more competitive and healthy environment for content creators across the board. Naturally, this will make it easier for artists to produce visually stunning content and shall provide wider access to technology, whether it is for writing filmmaking
Umpteen candidates. Infinite opportunities
The last year’s trend shift completely changed the horoscope of the visual effects sector. Studies show that the number of candidates enrolling for Animation and VFX courses has recently doubled effectively proving the popularity it gained among the general public. And, the reason being the scope of studying VFX has broadened worldwide never as before. Every VFX artist dream of working in premium studios like Disney, DNEG, Warner Bros etc or individually start their own business. Just like the boom in visual effects industry there is a similar boom happening in the film industry as well. The average amount of movies being released every year easily surpasses the former years. As most of the movies make use of VFX shots for the better theatrical experience, VFX industry effortlessly benefitted from this trend paving way for more opportunities for VFX artists.
Industry Statistics
India's visual effects and animation sector was estimated to be worth 107 billion Indian rupees in 2022, even after the pandemic's negative impact caused a decline in market value the year before. With revenue of over 50 billion Indian rupees, the VFX segment contributed the most to the overall market size. India's growing prosperity fuels the country's appetite for entertainment. Like other nations in the Asia-Pacific area, India's population is getting wealthier and its economy is expanding. The nation's media and entertainment sector has expanded as a result of rising income and improved connectivity.
Visual effects (VFX) and animation are widely growing media categories. A change towards more convenient and customized digital encounters occurred with the spread of the internet and its revolutionary technologies. These changes made more room for India's animation and visual effects industries to expand, and in 2022, the sector grew by almost 29%. In India, the media sector is dominated by animation and visual effects (VFX), which is expected to increase at a robust rate of 35 percent CAGR between 2022 and 2023.
The most recent developments in technology are establishing new avenues for creativity. As tools and techniques advance with time, VFX artists are experimenting and exploring new artistic possibilities. Traditional pipelines are being challenged by these innovative strategies, and 2024 will be a fascinating year for revaluating how the technology will interact with audience. In order to maximize ambition and minimize risk, VFX studios will be more involved and integrated, leveraging their knowledge of emerging technology and methods of operation.
The speed at which technological innovations are occurring is truly astounding. It is anticipated that in 2024, real-time technologies like Unreal Engine will continue to be adopted for virtual production applications and other uses. Although there are certain difficulties in this field, the opportunities and possible gains for studios are quite alluring. The widespread acceptance of these tactics has been greatly aided by the instruments' accessibility, and this envision is sure to be continued into 2024.
How to get into VFX industry?
The fact that you’re reading this blog and you’ve read it this far is itself a sign that you’re already into the step one of this process. Yes, step one is reading and studying intensively about VFX industry; Knowing the latest trends, range of opportunities, field that matches your taste and everything related which you can do research in. No matter whatever field you choose, having a thorough knowledge about what you’re getting yourself into is mandatory. The second step is opting a suitable program suited to your taste and interests. To pursue a career in VFX, select a  that is  well-reputated and has nice studio set-up.  If you’re interested in only one of the genres of visual effects sector, taking a full-time 3 year degree programme won’t be a good idea. Whether you did 3 year degree program or certificate/diploma course, the opportunities will knock at your door if you’ve a top-noch bunch of works/showreels that showcase your talent and hardwork. Basically, it’s not the education certificate that matters but its the quality of your showreels that decides your future.
However, enrolling in a suitable VFX course at a respectable institution is the simplest approach to get into the VFX and animation industries. This will have a profound impact on how you pursue employment in the sector as well as how your future is shaped.
Salary of a VFX Artist in India
You can offer yourself a solid foundation by enrolling in a reputable VFX and animation course in India. As to the April 2020 update, a VFX artist’s average monthly remuneration is INR 37.5k. As you advance to the position of assistant technical director or assistant animator/creative director, you can expect to generate more income accordingly. You can make up to INR 45k to 60k a month working as a freelancer, depending on your expertise, reputation, and caliber of work. Expert animators and visual effects artists also bill by the hour. I saw Jawan today and ...
The last film I saw on a big screen was Ponniyin Selvan, Part 2, and before I went to see Jawan I had a talk with myself. "Self," I said, "although I don't know much about this movie, I know that it is not directed by one of India's greatest directors, nor is based on a classic series of novels, nor is the sequel to the previous film which had well-developed, memorable characters even in smaller roles, played by extremely good actors. So do not expect, Self, that this will give you the same kind of experience that the PS films did."
And with that said, no, this definitely didn't give me the same kind of experience but it was really fun to see one time in a theater with friends.
Big, big, VERY BIG ENORMOUS SPOILERS. Don't read if you haven't seen the film and you want to be unspoiled.
Much like my PS2 theatrical experience, I MISSED THE FIRST TEN MINUTES AGAIN, ARGH! I was counting on previews and they didn't have previews, I guess? However, I don't think I missed out on as much as I did by missing the first ten minutes of PS2.
There were lots of things I liked about Jawan, so I'm going to start with those:
The good:
It was fun seeing a bunch of South Indian actors like Priyamani and of course Nayanthara and Vijay Sethupathi. (More about them later.) Oh, and I did like the mini-Family Man reunion with Priyamani and the actress who plays her character's daughter Dhriti on that show :D (If only Manoj Bajpayee had been in this and/or Raj & DK had written the script, this would have been a different film altogether.)
SRK is very charming, but much more so in the second half when he was playing the much more age-appropriate Vikram Rathore. I'll get to why I liked Vikram Rathore more in the parts that I DISLIKED but I also loved that Vikram was very funny. (I always love when SRK is slightly taking the mickey out of himself which he did in the second half of the film. And I cracked up when he asked Suji if she was also his kid.) I would watch a whole entire movie of Vikram Rathore doing cool stuff.
I liked the girl gang concept a lot (I would have even liked it more if the boss had been Kaveri Amma and not SRK, but I don't think the movie would have ever been made if that were the case) and I liked all the individual actresses.
Nayanthara - she was fabulous as the task-force cop and looked so good doing action scenes. I love her.
Deepika Padukone - she's so gorgeous and I had some Om Shanti Om vibes with this, which is a movie that I really love. And the emotional parts were pretty good too.
While the political messaging was extremely heavy-handed, I did like that it came up in the movie, especially the part about voting. (When they stole the voting machines, I couldn't help but wonder if the scriptwriters had been listening to any of the insane election 2020 denialism in the US :P Was Hugo Chavez behind any of this? :P) However, maybe the script would have been tighter if they had targeted ONE social ill, instead of all of them?
Vijay Sethupathi - I will always just really like him whatever he's doing, because I'm like a duckling about movies and I imprint on actors based on what I first saw them in*, and I saw VJS in Farsi first, and loved him in that. SO ...
There was enough humor that I didn't feel like it was entirely taking itself seriously which is important in this kind of a film (though you didn't have to show people rolling around laughing to cue us to laugh, director Atlee!!) Let your script do its thing, dude! (Oh, wait, I forgot that the script was ... the script that it was. Which brings me to the bad):
The bad:
I'm sorry but the de-aging VFX for SRK was honestly a bit creepy - people drag Nayanthara for having work done, but I'll take her still-human face over the plastic-y face Azad. When he pulled the bald sock thing off his head, I really thought he was going to peel off his entire face and show "normally aged SRK" but nope!
I just threw up my hands and laughed when they discovered Deepika was pregnant just by taking her pulse. Why do they even make pregnancy tests, am I right? And I don't know about India, but surely they would have you know, taken her blood group etc. when she was first incarcerated?
Which brings me to my VAST apology to all Tamil movies in which I have shaken my head in disbelief that a man who repeatedly has his head whacked with a metal bar or banged into a concrete pillar doesn't even have a concussion, let alone a skull fracture. No, compared to Jawan, you are all PINNACLES of realism! Because SRK was shot five times, thrown out of an airplane that was above the cloudline, fell into a body of water and didn't break any bones, AND banged his head on a rock and apparently just suffered some slight amnesia. Um, ok then! (I think the part where the dude finds him and says he's keeping his promise to Azad might have been in the first ten minutes that I missed, so maybe there's some explanation for why he didn't die - but for now, I just have to assume he was the incarnation of Grigorii Rasputin. And I will almost certainly never watch this movie a second time, so it will just have to remain a mystery unless someone can explain to me in the comments or something.
The music was completely forgettable. There wasn't a single song that I can even remember the tune of, nothing catchy, no memorable lyrics etc. That WAS disappointing.
Random new subplots that made NO SENSE. Like what was the whole thing about stealing the elections with mafia money? Why was that even in there? And if it had to be in there, why didn't the SRKs just leave him to the mercy of those people who would have murdered him inventively for losing their money? And if they just wanted SRKs to kill him the way he got Aishwarya killed, then why include that subplot? None of that subplot made any sense at all. (Actually very little of that plot made any sense.)
Another thing was the women's jail/rest home. If that is prison, I am surprised more people weren't clamoring to be incarcerated. It looked much nicer than living on a farm. It was super clean and they seemed to have a ton of freedom even before Azad became the warden.
The way Nayanthara was completely sidelined in the second half. I also have no idea why she decided to marry SRK after five minutes. (And they totally stole her costumes in Chaliye from the Kannala Kannala song in "Thani Oruvan" - a far, far better song than any of the songs in Jawan. (See below)
youtube
So all in all, I did enjoy the film and I'm glad I saw it, despite its flaws. But this is not a rewatch for the nuances type of film!
*Kay Kay Menon, Tabu, and Shahid Kapoor fan for life because I first saw them in Haider. Which is definitely the best movie Shahid Kapoor has ever made, but Farzi was really excellent too and Shahid and Kay Kay were in it alongside VJS. Watch eeeeeeet!
