X-38 Ship #2 in Free Flight
"The X-38, a research vehicle built to help develop technology for an emergency Crew Return Vehicle (CRV), descends under its steerable parachute during a July 1999 test flight at the Dryden Flight Research Center, Edwards, California. It was the fourth free flight of the test vehicles in the X-38 program, and the second free flight test of Vehicle 132 or Ship 2. The goal of this flight was to release the vehicle from a higher altitude -- 31,500 feet -- and to fly the vehicle longer -- 31 seconds -- than any previous X-38 vehicle had yet flown. The project team also conducted aerodynamic verification maneuvers and checked improvements made to the drogue parachute."

This item, H.R. 7152, the Civil Rights Act of 1964, faced strong opposition in the House Rules Committee. Howard Smith, Chairman of the committee, refused to schedule hearings for the bill. Emanuel Celler, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, attempted to use this discharge petition to move the bill out of committee without holding hearings. The petition failed to gain the required majority of Congress (218 signatures), but forced Chairman Smith to schedule hearings.

A highly unthorough and lacking compilation of memes and references in Gideon the Ninth
I've seen plenty of compilations of memes and references in HTN, but very few compilations for GTN. And so, behold! I hath created this. Enjoy! (All page numbers are from my paperback copy. I shall include citations for people who found various things when applicable).
Act One
p. 53: "Oh, nonsense!" said Harrow languorously. "She’s a genius. With the proper motivation, Griddle could wield two swords in each hand and one in her mouth. While we were developing common sense, she studied the blade. Am I right, Griddle?"

p. 69 (nice!): Gideon realised that Harrow was trembling; little licks of hole-black hair were pasted to her pale-grey forehead with sweat, threatening to dissolve the paint. Gideon realised with a start that she was trembling and sweating in concert. They looked at each other with a wild surmise, and then started dabbing at their faces with the insides of their sleeves.
This is a reference to John Keats' poem, "On First Looking into Chapman’s Homer," from 1816.

Also p.69: Gideon winked at her increasingly agitated companion. She said, sotto voce: “But then you couldn’t have admired … these,” and whipped on the glasses she’d unearthed back home. They were ancient smoked-glass sunglasses, with thin black frames and big mirrored lenses, and they greyed out Harrow’s expression of incredulous horror as she adjusted them on her nose.
Badasses wearing sunglasses is a common staple in fiction, but I have a source as reliable as Herodotus's (which is to say I saw a guy say they read somewhere that Muir said that) these sunglasses are a reference to Dave Strider's sunglasses from Homestuck. Act Two:
p. 94: “Nooo Magnus! Don’t say we’re overcome!” moaned the nasty girl, sotto voce.

p. 131: "Fiat lux!" If you want to talk about being improbable, let's talk about this"--a scrape of stone on stone--"being three thousand and some years older than this." A heavy clunk.

This might be a stretch, but could also be a reference to The Simpsons season 8, episode 14, "The Itchy & Scratchy & Poochie Show," which includes the line, "Poochie died on the way back to his home planet."

p. 412: Half a dozen tendrils came after her. They would have given her an interesting array of new airholes for speed, but a skeleton staggered out of the darkness and took most of the blows, jawbone crushed into powder as a tendril lashed open its skull.

Lebor Gabála Érenn
I swear I'm stopping soon! But just when I think I'm done with Ireland, another of these tales pop-up on my radar.
Here are some miscellanea of incest couples that appear in the book Lebor Gabála Érenn ('The Book of the Taking of Ireland'). These names come up in lists of geneology and there's little story for the characters, it's basically 'A is daughter of B and had C with her own father', so it means it's a clean slate for us to imagine whatever dynamic we want between these characters.
I'm using the R. A. Stewart Macalister translation.
Book IV
Delbaeth (also known as Tuireann), King of Tuatha Dé Danann (the gods or fae folk) is the father of Danand (or Mórrígan, 'great queen'), with whom he fathered three children: Brian, Iuchar, and Iucharba, who "were the three gods of Danu, from whom is named the Mountain of the Three Gods" (p. 103);
Fiacha, son (and successor to the throne) of Delbaeth and Ernmas and Danand's brother, had three daughter with his own mother, Ernmas: Banba, Fotla, and Eriu (p. 131);
Basically Delbeath and Ernmas have a bunch of children, then Delbaeth hooks up with his daughter and has triplets with her, while Ernmas hooks up with her own and has triplets. Lots of triplets in this family. And these triplets are basically all important gods, with Eriu herself being almost a personification of the whole Ireland (which was called Ériu at the time).
Book V
Érimón, King of the Milesians (other group of invaders, more human than the Tuatha Dé Danann), married his own mother, Scota, after the death of his father. The unexpected bit is that Scota is said to be the daughter of the Egyptian Pharaoh. Actually, I think that there's no mention of her being mother to Érimón, only that she was married to his father (p. 75);
Anyway, Érimón might not have married his mom, but he certainly married his sister, Odba, with whom he had three children: Maimne, Luigne, and Laigne (again with the triplets!). However, Érimón is a huge dick and abandoned Odba in Spain for a new wife in Ireland, Tea (p. 41);
Meanwhile, Donn, Érimón's brother, was married to their other sister, Díl. They both drowned in their trip to Ireland (p. 57);
So what de we learn from the Lebor Gabála Érenn? If you commit incest, you will end up having triplets who will either de Irish gods or Irish High Kings.
The story of Book IV would make such a funny sitcom. Specially if Delbeath and Ernmas don't know the other is also in love with one of their children, so they are both going behind each other's back and cheating, meanwhile Danand and Fiacha are just chilling and talking to each other how much they are in love with their parents.

In Psalm 131, David writes, "I have calmed and quieted myself" (v. 2). David's words remind me that I have responsibility. Changing habits starts with my choice to be still-even if I must make that choice over and over again. Slowly, though, we experience God's satisfying goodness. Like a little child, we rest in contentment, remembering that He alone offers hope (v. 3)-soul-satisfaction that no smartphone app can touch and no social media site can deliver. -Adam R. Holz

LISTEN ONLINE
I set my phone down, weary of the constant bombardment of images, ideas and notifications that the little screen broadcasted. Then, I picked it up and turned it on again. Why?
In his book The Shallows, Nicholas Carr describes how the internet has shaped our relationship with stillness: “What the Net seems to be doing is chipping away my capacity for concentration and contemplation. Whether I’m online or not, my mind now expects to take in information the way the Net distributes it: in a swiftly moving stream of particles. Once I was a scuba diver in the sea of words. Now I zip along the surface like a guy on a Jet Ski.”
Living life on a mental jet ski doesn’t sound healthy. But how do we begin to slow down, to dive deeply into still spiritual waters?
In Psalm 131, David writes, “I have calmed and quieted myself” (v. 2). David’s words remind me that I have responsibility. Changing habits starts with my choice to be still—even if I must make that choice over and over again. Slowly, though, we experience God’s satisfying goodness. SCRIPTURE INSIGHT
The language of Psalm 131 can seem a bit odd. Isn’t the psalmist a little prideful to declare to God that he’s not prideful? But the psalmist isn’t after praise for his humility. Instead, the words of the song communicate great confidence in knowing his station in life and being satisfied with it.
Rather than aspire to things beyond his reach, the psalmist looks to what’s in front of him. He finds contentment in quiet and peace, an idea the NIV brings to the front by translating verse 2—which reads literally, “like a weaned child I am on myself”—as “like a weaned child I am content.”
In the end, the psalmist encourages Israel to hope in Yahweh. Contentment with our lot in life—neither looking higher or lower—comes from our confidence in God, because He is enough.

دبي: «الخليج» تطرح هيئة الطرق والمواصلات في دبي، 90 رقماً ثنائياً وثلاثياً ورباعياً وخماسياً للوحات المركبات المميزة من الفئات (AA-I-J-K-L-M-N-O-P-Q-R-S-T-U-V-W-X-Y-Z)، أبرزها الأرقام السوبر: (AA 70– Y 96– Z 43– S 888– W 22222– X 7777 X 300 – W10000)، في المزاد العلني 131، وهو الثاني لها هذا العام. ويُقام المزاد يوم السبت 2 سبتمبر المقبل، ويبدأ التسجيل فيه يوم الاثنين 28 أغسطس الجاري، بينما ستجرى وقائع المزاد في فندق إنتركونتيننتال فيستفال سيتي بدبي الساعة 4:30 عصراً. ويمكن كذلك الاشتراك في المزاد بالتسجيل من خلال الموقع الإلكتروني للهيئة (www.rta.ae)، أو تطبيق «دبي درايف» أو مراكز إسعاد المتعاملين في أم رمول، ديرة، والبرشاء، كما تجدر الإشارة إلى أن المقاعد ستكون محدودة وسَتُمنَحُ الأولوية للمشاركين في المزاد، وعليه يُفَضَّلُ التسجيل المسبق في المزاد، مع العلم أن التسجيل سيكون كذلك متاحاً في قاعة المزاد ابتداء من الساعة الثانية ظهراً. وسيخضع بيع الأرقام لتطبيق ضريبة القيمة المضافة البالغة 5%، وتشترط عملية المشاركة في المزاد أن يكون للمتعامل ملف مروري في إمارة دبي، وإيداع شيك تأمين موجه للهيئة بمبلغ 25 ألف درهم، إضافة إلى 120 درهماً رسوم اشتراك غير قابلة للاسترجاع، وذلك في مراكز إسعاد المتعاملين المذكورة أعلاه، كما يمكن الدفع عن طريق بطاقة الائتمان عبر الموقع الإلكتروني أو من خلال تطبيق (دبي درايف). المصدر: صحيفة الخليج
