...
Trångsundet, watercolour, 12x17 cm
One nice thing about paddling, besides being an enjoyable activity, is that being on the water looking at land presents a whole new range of subjects to paint.
This is a small colour study from a photo I took while paddling in Liljedal recently.

WIP game
Rules: You will be given a word. Share one sentence/excerpt from your WIP(s) that starts with each letter of that word.
Thanks for the tag, @cacodaemonia ! My word is RUBY. :D
My current WIP is a Thorki getting-back-together story. I have written four out of five chapters already, so for this game, I decided to pick one excerpt from each chapter (though I had to cheat a little for all of them to make sense, haha).
R – Right now, he’s tired and frustrated and under no obligation to humour Loki any longer, but ever since the rest of the Council filed out, Loki has been standing a little closer with every attempt to drive home his point, and Thor very much wants to know where this is going.
U – “I love you,” he whispers against Loki’s neck, because this, at least, is true and easy. Unchanging.
B – Below, Lake Vänern glitters in its light.
Y – “There’s no need for an apology. You were only fulfilling your duty as an employee of this store.”
No-pressure tags: @valkeakuulas @odekiisu
Your word is SEJD.
(Sejd is the modern Swedish form of seiðr, a word I do not use in my Thorki fics, as I find the absence of a modern English form too jarring.)

A castle, a reward for services rendered
Tumblr media
Läckö Castle (Läckö slott in Swedish) is a Baroque mansion known for having been from 1615 the residence of Marshal Jacob Pontusson De la Gardie, a descendant of the French diplomat Pontus De la Gardie, who served Denmark and Sweden in the 16th century.
The construction of the castle on the shores of Lake Vänern began in 1298, when the Bishop of Skara Brynolf Algotsson laid the foundations of a fortified castle, although at that time it was probably no more than a promontory surrounded by rather simple buildings. Its importance lay in the fact that it was strategically located in the middle of his diocese.
When the Lutheran Reformation came to Sweden, the castle was seized from the Church and in 1527 it became a possession of the Crown under Gustav I Eriksson, the architect of Sweden's independence in 1523. It would later be known as Gustav Vasa, incorporating the family name, in reference to his coat of arms.
Jacob Pontusson's son, Magnus Gabriel, was only 30 years old when he took over his father's title and estates in the mid-17th century. He began an extensive extension of Läckö Castle, and the present building is essentially the result of his renovation.
During his lifetime, Magnus Gabriel Pontusson De la Gardie became the governor of the kingdom, accumulating the highest civil and military offices and leading Sweden into a warmongering policy that impoverished the country.
In the 18th century, Läckö Castle eventually reverted back to the Crown and was granted to Count Carl Gustaf Tessin in 1752, a diplomat and ambassador and also protector of the scientist Carl von Linné.
In 1810, the Crown again awarded the castle, this time to General Carl Johan Adlercreutz, who had led several war campaigns against Russia since the end of the 18th century and was the leader of a coup d'état in which he attempted to crown himself king. However, another candidate took the crown under the name of Karl XIII in 1809. Läckö was perhaps the consolation prize.
Today, Läckö slott is part of the Swedish national heritage and the castle courtyard hosts opera performances during the summer.

This is a snippet of an upcoming oneshot for my Years in Review series on ao3! Hope you enjoy!
‘They lived just a handful of minutes away from each other in Sweden. Joel’s lakehouse was one of the most magnificent properties on Lake Vänern. It should’ve been unmistakably home, and yet…
Joel leaned over the edge of their couch, eyes tracking Jonas’s hands as he clocked the ‘purchase’ button for their tickets back to Europe. When Jonas looked over and met his gaze with a soft, fond smile, Joel was speaking before he could even process it.
“Move in with me, when we get back. It isn’t home without you there.”
He’d never been so certain of something in his entire life.’
Hope you enjoy! 💚

There are pretty few Swedish kommunvapen/coat of arms that can hold a candle to the antlerfish, but I do like Trollhättan:
Tumblr media
The city is built around the rapids just south of Vänern, and thats reflected in the design - the water locks in the lower part, hydropower up above.
I think these are pretty cool though:

The creepy moon in the boat is from Trosa. Trosa... The municipality is literally called Panty
I don't know if different muncipalities having their own coat of arms is a thing outside of Finland, but I rather like many of them. Like, the only way to go wrong in a coat of arms is to make it boring, the best ones are the most memorable ones. Have a collection of the few that I consider the least aesthetic, most boring coats of arms of all finnish muncipalities. If you see your own hometown coat on this list, do not come at me - fix your own problems first and move somewhere else.

Bland, generic, tells no story. Unfuckable. The kind of shit you'd see on the shield of an enemy that's getting their ass kicked by the Cool Sexy Woman Knight in the first round of a jousting event in a corny but riveting fantasy movie. Now, let's look at some of the cool ones:

Striking. Distinct. Tells you a story, gives you some clue about what this place is and what is the story of the people who live here. Can occasionally afford more than two colours per coat. Now that's sexy. These, these are good. I had a hard time choosing only nine that I liked best, so I decided to divide the examples of Sexy Coats of Arms into non-animal and animal cathegories. These are examples of the cool ones with animals on them:

And as a final special mention we have Kouvola. The city of Kouvola largely doesn't deserve the bad rep it has - the crime rate isn't that high, the title of "the ugliest city in Finland" is a bit harsh since it does have some vaguely soviet/dystopian grunge brutalist aesthetic if you're into that sort of thing, and in my experience the friendliest crackheads in Finland. But all those things said, their coat of arms does kinda feature this thing eerily similar to the symbol of Chaos

Klarälven
River in Europe
Tumblr media
Statue of the famous waitress Sola i Karlstad in Karlstad. This is a depiction of work of art in Sweden.

A stone bridge crossing the Klarälven delta in Karlstad. The red constructions were made to catch passing logs. Such constructions can be seen throughout Klarälven.
Klarälven is a river flowing through Norway and Sweden. Together with Göta älv, which it is called as the river has passed through the lake Vänern, thus regarded as an entity, Göta älv—Klarälven is the longest river in Scandinavia and in the Nordic countries and its Swedish part the longest river of Sweden.
Source: Rogen, Islands: Gubbholmen, Length: 460 km, Discharge: 165 m³/s, Mouth: Vänern
Cities: Deje, Munkfors, Karlstad, Forshaga, Forshult
Basin size: 11,820 km2 (4,560 sq mi)
Klarälven - Wikipedia
Tumblr media
Klarälven is a typical example of a very old river, finding its way through the primary rocks for decades and decades, carrying pieces of rocks and sand while heading towards Vänern. Large quantities of different natural materials are still carried by the mass of water in the river; in the wintertime, an estimated mass of 20 to 25 tonnes of sediment goes down the river each day. During the spring flood, it is estimated to be around 5,000 (!) tonnes per day.
LOG DRIVNING ON KLARÄLVEN
Tumblr media
Log driving on the river Klarälven ceased in 1991, but Vildmark i Värmland takes the tradition further. Today you are able to experience the old floating route, Klarälven, from your own raft which you build from logs and ropes.
