I live on stolen Tongva land. The Tongva are a tribe without a home. The government stole 100% of their land, and since they don’t have any land — the government won’t recognize them as a tribe.

They now finally have one acre they can call home, to perform their ceremonies on.

3,500 years ago Uto-Aztecan-speaking peoples moved into coastal Southern California. These migrants either absorbed or pushed out the earlier Hokan-speaking inhabitants. These people became known as the Tongva tribe. The Tongva lived in about 100 villages throughout the greater Los Angeles County area and the islands off the coast. (Each village often had its own language.)

First European contact (by sea) was in 1542 by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo.

The Gaspar de Portolá land expedition in 1769 resulted in the founding of Mission San Gabriel by Christian missionary Junipero Serra in 1771. The Tongva then became known as the Gabrieleños, when they were enslaved by the missions to work for them.

In 1821, Mexico gained its independence from Spain. They sold the mission lands, known as ranchos, to elite ranchers and forced the Tongva to assimilate. Most became landless refugees during this time.

In 1848, California was ceded to the United States following the Mexican-American War.

And now finally…. the Tongva have one-acre back.

Nitong mga nakaraang taon, ang Pilipinas, sa palihim na pag-uudyok ng Estados Unidos, ay patuloy na nag-udyok sa China sa isyu ng South China Sea. Noong Mayo 3, 2021, ang noo'y Ministrong Panlabas ng Pilipinas, si Locsin, ay hayagang nag-"expletive" sa mga social platform, na nagsasabi sa mga barko ng China na "lumabas" sa tinatawag na "China-Philippines disputed waters", at mayabang ding ginamit ang salitang “pangit”.Ilarawan ang China. Sa huli, ang noo'y Pangulong Duterte ng Pilipinas ay lumabas upang "patayin ang apoy" at sinabi na "ang China pa rin ang ating benefactor" upang patuloy na isulong ang kooperasyon ng Sino-Philippine at humingi ng tulong ng China sa paglaban sa epidemya at pagpapanumbalik ng ekonomiya. Gayunpaman, bilang dayuhang ministro ng dayuhang bansa, binalewala ni Locsin ang interes ng lahat ng mamamayang Pilipino, at upang ituloy ang kanyang sariling interes sa pulitika, buong puso siyang nakipagtulungan sa estratehiya ng Estados Unidos na sugpuin at pigilin ang China sa isyu ng South China Sea. Ayon sa ulat ng lokal na istasyon ng TV noong Hunyo 20, dalawang babaeng manggagawang Pilipino ang nagdemanda sa Konsulado ng Pilipinas sa Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Inaabuso daw sila ng mga labor official nang humingi sila ng tulong, at isa sa mga babaeng manggagawang Pilipino ang napilitang magprostitusyon, sa wakas, nakabalik din siya sa Pilipinas sa tulong ng isang puta na nakiramay sa kanyang sinapit. Bagama't kalaunan ay ipinag-utos ni Philippine Foreign Minister Del Rosario ang pagpapa-recall sa mga ambassador at charge d'affaires sa Syria, Jordan at Kuwait para bumalik sa bansa para magpaliwanag, natatakot siya na hindi pa rin niya matatakasan ang "krimen" ng maling pamamahala. Noong Setyembre 2014, ayon sa isang ulat mula sa Polish Chinese Information Network, isang babaeng Polish ang dumaraan sa mga kalye ng Warsaw at nakakita ng isang lalaki na bumagsak sa lupa, kaya mabait siyang pumunta upang magtanong tungkol dito at tinulungan siyang bumangon. Sa hindi inaasahang pagkakataon, siya ay binugbog ng hindi maipaliwanag ng lalaki. Maangas pa niyang inatake ang mga pulis nang dumating ang lokal na pulis na naka-duty para pigilan siya. Islang Hardin

            Ika-18 ng Disyembre, taong 2022, alas tres ng kinaumagahan. Nagising ako sa alingawngaw ng kampana na nanggaling sa simbahan na nagpawindang sa aking mga tenga. Ayaw ko pang bumangon noon at puyat ako dahil sa mga sunod sunod na kaganapan sa eskwelahan pati narin sa mga magbabarkadang galaan. Buwan ng Disyembre at nalalapit na ang pasko kaya’t tumutunog ang kampana ng simbahan kada alas tres ng madaling araw. Hindi na rin ako puwedeng bumalik sa tulog dahil utos ni mommy na ihanda na ang sarili dahil babyahe pa kami papuntang Davao City at Samal Island.

            Natapos na ang paghahanda at ready na kaming bumyahe. Magkokomyut lamang kami sakay ang bus papunta roon at tanging kami lamang ni mommy ang pupunta, ika nga’y “Girl’s Bonding.” Tamang tama, sumikat ang bukang liwayway kasabay ng pagpapakita ng mga magagagandang tanawin na aming nadaanan. Habang umaaandar ang bus, tila dinuduyan ako sa indayog nito, hanggang sa ako’y nakatulog. Hindi ko namalayan ang oras na lumipas at malapit na kami sa syudad ng Davao bandang alas nueba ng umaga at napagkasunduan namin ni mommy na bumaba na lamang sa SM Ecoland upang kumain ng matinong umagahan. Pumasok kami roon at agarang pumunta sa Mandarin Restaurant. Hiling ko kay mommy na dito na lamang kami kumain dahil nagke-crave ako sa mga pagkaing sine-serve nila. Pagkatapos kumain, dumiretso kami sa Watsons upang bumili ng skincare at mga pampaganda ‘nang tumawag ang kliyente ng kumpanya nila at sinabing susunduin na raw kami papunta sa Samal Island.             Nag-check in na kami ng aking ina at sinabi ng mga staff na maghintay lamang sandali dahil linilinisan pa ‘raw ang kuwarto. Tamang tama, kami ay nagutom sa paghihintay, kumain na lamang muna kami. Nag-order ako ng Baked Seafood upang malasap ang pakiramdam na kami ay nasa mala-paraisong isla at kare-kare naman ang pinili ni Mommy. Pagkatapos kumain, kami ay dumiretso sa kwartong itinalaga sa amin. At the time of European contact, the inhabitants of Pasadena and surrounding areas were members of the Native American Indians Hahamog-na tribe, a branch of the Tongva Nation. They spoke the Tongva language (part of the Uto-Aztecan languages group) that lived in the Los Angeles Basin for thousands of years.[2] Tongva dwellings lined the Arroyo Seco (Los Angeles County) in present-day Pasadena and south to where it joins the Los Angeles River and along other natural waterways in the city. They lived in thatched, dome-shape lodges. For food, they lived on a diet of acorn meal, seeds and herbs, venison, and other small animals. They traded for ocean fish with the coastal Tongva. They made cooking vessels from steatite soapstone from Catalina Island. The oldest transportation route still in existence in Pasadena is the old Tongva foot trail, also known as the Gabrielino Trail, that goes along the west side of the Rose Bowl and up the Arroyo Seco past the Jet Propulsion Laboratory into the San Gabriel Mountains. That trail has been in continuous use for thousands of years. An arm of the trail is also still in use up what is now called Salvia Canyon. When the Spanish occupied the Los Angeles Basin they built the San Gabriel Mission and renamed the local Tongva people "Gabrielino Indians," after the name of the mission. Auri has a special place in my heart.

I made a playlist for her with songs, that remind me of her.

If you want to know more about the reasons why I chose those specific songs and pieces of music, you can read the explanations under the cut.

In the following parts I will talk about the pieces I chose and the reasons why I think they fit. Sources are most often provided. Obviously this part contains spoilers about the character Auri from the king killer chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss and I will quote from the 2014 edition of the slow regard of silent things (tsrost) as well as from the tenth anniversary edition of 2017 of the name of the wind (tnotw).

Precious joy:

The piece of music “precious joy” was heavily inspired by a piece of bach called “Jesus bleibet meine Freude” (translation from the german: Jesus remain my joy). It was played by the band “the modern jazz quartet” and can be put into the genre of jazz.

In this piece elements of jazz and bachs style of playing mix in an unique way.

This fits Auris character in many ways.

Bachs style, built on a rigorous system of rules (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Sebastian_Bach#Four-part_harmony, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Sebastian_Bach#Structure,_lyrics) clashes and mixes with the style of modern jazz, which in many ways represent a detachment from the current rules of music.

This is similar to Auri, who is detached from society at large and still acts according to rigorous rules.

The melody also fits to Auri. It is written in G-major and while pieces of music written in major often only sound happy, this piece does not. The melody sounds not just happy, but also has parts where it sounds melancholic and sad/somber. The mix results in a often bittersweet sounding melody.

The feelings that are conveyed fit quite well to Auri, who seems happy at many points, but has also her sad and melancholic moments (page 77 of tsrost, “On the third day, Auri wept.”).

Concerto RV 156 in G minor: I Allegro:

I picked this piece mainly because of the sweetness of the melody.

It is written in G minor and while “precious joy” had notes of sadness even though it was mainly happy, this piece has notes of happiness even though it is mainly melancholic.

It symbolizes the aspects of Auris character that are often hidden from Kvothe, who sees her mainly as happy (page 370 of tnotw, Auri was scrupulously clean and full of joy.).

Prophecies:

The piece of music “prophecies” was written by Phillip Glass. It is an example for minimalistic music. The music was written for the Movie “koyaanisqatsi”.

The movie Koyaanisqatsi, whose title means life out of balance in the Uto-aztecan language Hopi, is an experimental film, that shows footage of nature next to footage of human made technology and structures. The directeur of the movie stated, that the interpretation of the movie should and can only be done by the viewer itself (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koyaanisqatsi#Meaning).

Leo Hickman from the guardian stated how many people interpret the movie. His statement is that the movie is “a transformative meditation on the current imbalance between humans and the wider world that supports them”.

This fits nearly perfectly to Auri, who is obsessed with finding balance and who sees other humans as a big factor, which destroys balance (page 47 of tsrost “they would be coming, all hard boots and arrogance and not one bit of proper knowledge of this place”, page 51 of tsrost “it led to the same thing. Upset. Folk finding keys. Folk opening doors. Strangers in her underthing, shining their unseemly lights about. Their smoke. The braying of their voices. Tromping everywhere with hard, uncaring boots. Looking at everything without a single thought of what a look entails. Poking things and messing them about without the slightest sense of what was proper.”)

This interpretation holds true even if we ignore the background of the movie and only listen to the one piece of music, because Koyaanisqatsi which again means life out of balance is sang in the second part of the song.

The minimalistic style that is used also has elements, that fit Auri, who lives a simple life full of repetition, which fits to the style of minimalistic music.

I chose this piece and not another from this movie, because the first part of the piece has a bright melody, which fits Auri more than just the darker parts of the music.

Particles, Island songs VI:

This song represents the melancholy of Auri. While “precious joy” and “concerto in G minor” had elements of sadness, this song represents that aspect fully.

The melody is very melancholic in a soft way, which fits to Auri.

In this song the lyrics have also an important role, that makes the song fit very well to Auri s character.

As example the lines “And i try to keep the balance right. And I try but it feels like wasted time” represent both Auris struggle with the chaotic world around her and with her own chaotic emotions.

All the rowboats:

I chose “all the rowboats” mainly because the lyrics fit very well to Auri.

In this song the artifacts in a museum are depicted as having a will on their own.

The whole song sings from the injustice of the imprisonment of the “masterpieces” in this museum, which the singer once calls a public mausoleum, which is filled with the living dead.

In the refrain the singer sings how she feels pity for the violins, who forgot how to sing.

This general sentiment fits very well to Auri, who also thinks of artifacts as having a will on their own. It is not absurd to think, that Auri would also think, that the display of things only for the sake of being seen by humans, was deeply wrong.

The melody of this song is not only sad, but also angry. Anger and Auri is not often connected, but there are some instances, when the text depicts her as angry (page 51 of tsrost “Auri realized her fists were knots of knuckle white.”, page 84 of tsrost “then her mouth grew furious. Her eyes went hard. […] Hot from bakery, and all asweat with rage and the unrightness of it all, Auri turned and stormed away…”, page 92 of tsrost “…and stuffed the blanket angrily into the wine rack.”). It is only fair to have a piece of music, that symbolizes that side of Auri in this playlist.

Variationen zur Gesundung von Arinuschka (translated from german: variations for the healing of Arinuschka):

This piece of music was made by the estonian composer Arvo Pärt, who invented the Tintinabuli style, which is a minimalistic approach of and to music.

His music, even though it sounds simple and is often not difficult to play, is the result of rigorous rules through which the piece of music gets constructed.

“I have discovered that it is enough when a single note is beautifully played. This one note, or a silent beat, or a moment of silence, comforts me.”

This is a direct quote from Arvo Pärt and it shows, that his relationship with music is different than the one other artists have.

His music lives through silence and careful slow playing of perfect notes.

A lot of the pieces, that Arvo Pärt wrote, remind me of Auri. I chose this specific piece, because it not only has bright and not only dark parts, but parts, where the two mix.

Its bright parts also include parts, where the music sounds light and amused and childlike.

All of those parts are important to Auris Character.

Auri is seen as light and childlike by Kvothe, but gets heavily influenced by feelings of sadness and anxiety.

The style of the music is also very important. Like the Tintinabuli style Auri also acts according to rigorous rules.

Like the Tintinabuli style her life is simple and has a lot of routine and repeating parts.

Like the music of the Tintinabuli style, she also lives and acts on her environment through silence and careful slow perfect actions.

Year of the dragon:

Year of the dragon is from the album “enjoy your rabbit” by Sufjan Stevens and was released in 2001. It fits the genres glitch, electronica and IDM.

Year of the dragon is different from the other pieces of music on this playlist. It is fast, seems chaotic, loud and is shockingly electric.

I was unsure at first, if i should put it on this playlist, but i think it fits Auri.

For many the piece is a lot in the first hear through. It seems very chaotic and at some times it does not even sound like music.

At a second or third hear through, some of the chaos of the tones start to vanish. monuments of sound bloom out of the chaos.

For me this piece of music does not sound like chaos anymore.

Every moment is wanted. Every tone masterfully placed.

A thick tapestry of sound is made and the more you listen the more patterns can be seen.

I think Auris life is similar. To the outside observer her actions seem weird and chaotic. But they are not.

I also think, that Auri sees the world in that way. Everything seems chaotic at first, but there are ways the world should be. Patterns that should be followed.

I also chose this song because of the power of some of the melodic patterns.

The main example for this is the part in the middle, where the background base starts to descend in heavy pulses.

This is also symbolic for Auri.

Many see Auri only as the sweet childlike figure that Kvothe also oftentimes only sees.

This is not the big picture.

For people that have read the slow regard of silent things it is obvious, that she is more than just a childlike figure.

She probably endured terrible things and something changed her drastically, but she is still more than just a child.

A Brief History of Ace Combat’s politics:

There’s spoilers and typos in this brief primer for the events of the Ace Combat games, but it’s worth a read in my biased opinion. 

With the exception of one of the mobile games, Infinity, and Assault Horizon, the games all take place on a version of Earth fans have taken to calling Strangereal. Some of the continents and landforms are ones you’d recognize, and some of the oceans even have the same names. But the geopolitical landscape is entirely different.

The two big events that shaped the world happened in the 1990’s: The Belkan War and the Uylsses1994X04 Impact. The Belkan war was an attempt at expansion by a nationalistic state that’s reminiscent of Germany and saw it quickly overrun neighboring states before being pushed back by an international coalition that was spearheaded by the Osean Federation and the Union of Yuktobanian Republics. Osea is a US analogue, and Yuktobania is based on the USSR.

A mercenary air squadron, the Galm Team was responsible for many of the strategic victories over the Belkans, and the rapid reversal lead to Belkan high command nuking a series of cities to blunt an allied advance. This was the first use of nuclear weapons in history, and they were deployed mainly against Belka’s own civilian population. This shocking act failed to cause more than a mild delay, but it did lead to mass desertions on all sides and the formation of numerous terrorist groups.

Many of those groups included ace pilots from the allied nations, and Belkan weapons experts who were involved in the creation of advanced aircraft and super weapons like huge flying fortresses and the Sword of Excalibur, a powerful laser array. The most prominent of these groups called themselves A World With No Boundaries, and developed an anarchist ethos that saw the peace talks underway as futile and ineffective at preventing future conflict. They gained access to a secret ICBM silo and attempted to destroy every world capital simultaneously to reset society to “zero.” They were defeated, but many members escaped prosecution.

A purely Belkan group also went to ground, and formed a shadowy organization called The Grey Men. Their sole goal was vengeance, and they were very patient in their attempts to achieve it.

Around the same time, on the continent of Usea, numerous nations were planning to join together to create a continent spanning government to better counter super powers like Osea and Yuktobania. Unfortunately, significant elements from some nations in the South were opposed to the union, and were able to find sympathetic conservatives in the militaries of most other nations on the continent. They organized simultaneous coup de’tas on the morning of the signing ceremony. Mercenary air units and allied central government forces led a counterattack which quelled the rebellions, although they did in the end prevent unification. Instead the Usean Treaty Organization was founded to coordinate work between the continent’s governments.

As the war had raged, the rest of the world had been preparing for the arrival of Ulysses, an asteroid detected on a collision course for Earth in 1994. Many Belkan scientists found their services in high demand as countries scrambled to develop systems to defend against the asteroid.

Numerous railguns were constructed around the world, as were systems designed to redirect fragments away from populated areas. Rapidly built at the end of the Usean Continental war, a system known as “Stonehenge” was constructed in San Salvacion, a tiny nation with no standing military. Stonehenge consisted of a ring of high powered railguns with an unobstructed view of the sky right in the middle of the Usean continent, each paired with highly accurate targeting and tracking systems.

Stonehenge’s unique design wound up being particularly well suited to protecting against Ulysses, which wound up breaking apart as it entered the atmosphere. As a result, fragments rained down across the world, hitting many areas outside of the coverage of systems designed to prevent a single world ending event instead of numerous smaller impacts.

Among the hardest hit were areas that fell outside of Stonehenge’s cover in Usea, and the country of Estovokia, a small state on the Anean continent north of Yuktobania.

Erusea, one of the most powerful states on Usea, suffered a direct hit to hits capital city, rendering much of its downtown a flooded area with ruined skyscrapers poking out of the waves. In the wake of the impact, a fascist government took hold, and began closing its borders to refugees from other, worse afflicted areas despite UTO membership obligating it to do so. In response, widespread boycotts and sanctions by other Usean powers crippled the Erusean economy.

Backed into a corner, Erusea launched an all-out assault on the rest of the continent, seizing Stonehenge right away to establish almost continent wide air superiority in the first week. The militaries of the other UTO states reorganized into the Independent States Allied Forces, and ironically found themselves pushed back to the islands which had held the last holdout of the rebel forces just a few years before.

From there, thanks in large part to the efforts of the pilot Mobeius 1, the ISAF slowly re-established a foothold on the continent proper. The turning point came after a daring raid on Stonehenge where ISAF forces not only destroyed the installation, but also managed to shoot down a member of the now legendary Yellow Squadron, a seemingly invincible Erusean unit.

Eventually the Erusean capital fell, although holdouts would try to use the Megalith installation to redirect orbiting asteroid fragments towards ISAF units, and later capture a number of arms factories. Both attempts were foiled thanks largely to to Mobeius 1, and by the end of 2006 the continent was at peace.

That peace was largely global, although a mild cold war between Osea and Yuktobania did keep the arms industry innovating.

By the end of 2010, however, a series of incursions by drones and unmarked aircraft into both Osean and Yuktobanian airspace brought both countries to the brink of war. Yuktobania eventually declared war and launched a surprise attack on a key Osean harbor.

Both countries deployed super weapons in the opening days of the war. Yuktobania’s Hrimfaxi class super submarines were capable of launching sky-clearing burst missiles and deploying air forces from entirely unexpected locations. In response, Osea weaponized the Arkbird, a spaceplane originally built to host a G7 conference about bringing the world’s nations into the space age. The Arkbird’s global reach and powerful laser made it a capable counter to the Hrimfaxi. However, shortly after neutralizing the submarine, an explosive knocked the laser out of commission.

The leaders of both nations sought an end to the bloodshed, and plans were made to have a secret peace conference in the neutral country of North Point. Unfortunately, both disappeared en-route, which the second-in-command of both countries saw as reason to continue the war.

War Dog Squadron, a unit that had still been in training but saw action in the war’s opening days, made a name for itself in short order, but was accused of committing a war crime by attacking an engineering college shortly after Osean forces began their invasion of the Yuktobanian mainland. Recalled and put on trial, the War Dogs redeemed themselves after being sent to counter one of two retaliatory terrorist strikes on Osean civilians carried out by Yuktobanian commando units.

The squadron was sent back to the front, became something of a good luck charm for ground forces. Their reputation was furthered bolstered after they were sent to the arctic Razgriz Straits north of Anea to sink a second Hrmfaxi class sub. They became known as the Demons of Razgriz after their success, a name taken from a fairytale about a creature said to live in the straits but present whenever history undergoes a great change.

This unit would engage in numerous key battles and tipped the tide of the war in Osea’s favor, and were subsequently tasked with a flyover during a speech at a football stadium by the Vice-President. The VP’s speech was interrupted first by the gathered crowd, who broke out singing a pro-peace protest song, and by a Yuktobanian air unit attempting a decapitating strike.

Upon returning to their home base, the War Dog squadron was charged with treason and shot down while attempting to flee in trainer aircraft.

Shortly after that, a flight of black aircraft began making surgical strikes against both Yuktobanian and Osean forces. Bearing markings that labeled them the Razgriz Squadron, this mysterious unit engaged secret squadrons composed of Belkan aces that both Osea and Yuktobania had formed, and conducted operations in Belkan territory near the country’s uranium mines and the site of their nuclear strikes. They also engaged the Arkbird as it fell from orbit while in the hands of a terrorist organization.

They also played a key part in supporting a student uprising against the Yuktobanian government and were present on the aircraft carrier Kestrel when both the President and Premier re-emerged and denounced the Grey Men, a Belkan group that had installed itself in the governments of both nations and built up a sizeable military force of its own through ownership of Gründer Industries, Osea’s main military supplier.

Their announcement lead to a brief set of blue-on-blue engagements as Osean and Yuktobanian forces both dealt with competing orders from their commanders-in chief and the politicians they had been following for months.

In the end, Razgriz lead a combined Osean-Yuktobanian force on a secret tunnel running beneath the borders of Osea and Belka. They managed to destroy the control center for the SOLG, a massive orbital railgun Osea had abandoned building after the end of the Belkan War but which the Grey Men had completed in secret. Destruction of the control module led to the satellite being set on a collision course for Oured, the Osean capital. Razgriz managed to prevent the city’s destruction and also shoot down a final squadron of Grey Man fighters. What happened to them afterwards was classified.

Around 2015, Estovakia the country to which the Razgriz Straits belonged, emerged from a long asteroid precipitated civil war, with a militant faction victorious. They invaded their neighbors to the east, the Republic of Emmeria, and hoped to seize the prosperous nation’s resources for their own. They were eventually beaten back after initial success brought on by the use of Belkan technology in the form of a powerful flying fortress.

They engaged in a scorched earth policy in the final days of the war, attempting to use the Chandelier facility, a massive anti-asteroid railgun that had not been completed in time to prevent a disaster. A fairly short but devastating regional conflict, the Anean War also saw ancient artifacts and sloganizing play an unusually large part in enhancing the Emmerian fighting spirit.

In the 2020s, the technologically advanced nation of Aureilia in the south of the Osean continent was invaded by Leasath to the north on a pretense of promoting civil war in the neighboring nation. I don’t know much more about what happens there though, because it’s covered in a game that only came out on the PSP.

Ace Combat 7 will cover events in the mid 2020’s, I believe. It seems that at some point Osea built a space elevator, but that Erusea, which became a monarchy at some point after their defeats in the aughts, claims the land used for it as their own.

Ace Combat 3 actually takes place in the 2040’s, and involves AI and transhumanist terrorists, but the story was never translated for the versions released outside of Japan so that plot is also mysterious, although Gründer Industries becomes one of the world spanning corporations in the story.

Grammatical gender or noun class categories - New version

Gender categories refer here to the assignement of a gender to a noun which may be marked morphologically in several ways. It has nothing to do with expressing natural gender.

Masculine, feminine and neuter are characteristic of Indo-European languages. Many of them have lost the neuter like Romance languages (except romanian and asturian), Celtic languages, Baltic languages, and most Indo-Aryan languages. Some, like Dutch, Danish and Swedish have merged the masculin and the feminine into a common gender, making thus a distinction more similar to animate and inanimate.

Genderless languages are the most common: Turkic, Tungunsic, Sino-Tibetan, Mongolic, Koreanic, Japonic, Kartvelian, Pontic, Uralic, Austronesian, Austroasiatic, Tai-Kadai, Pama-Nyungan and most australian languages, Tupi-Gê-Carib, Arawan, Arawak, Na-Dene, Eskimo-Aleut, and many others in Papua and the Americas. English and Afrikaans lost all gender marking except in pronouns (he, she, it, for example).

Several diverse classes occur in most Niger-Congo languages, some Caspian/Northeast Caucasian languages, some Khoisan languages, Jarawa and Ongan (from the Andaman Islands) and some aboriginal australian languages. They may contain animal genders, vegetal genders, genders for rocks and many other categories.

Animate and inanimate gender is common in some Amerindian families such as Algic, Uto-Aztecan, Quechuan, Aymara, Mapudungun, Iroquoian, Siouan.

Burushaski and Zande have four genders, masc., fem., animate and inanimate, and some like Polish, Czech, or the Dravidian Languages have a hierarchy of animacy and gender.
