Loved MONKEY MAN. What a delight of a film! It has a couple of slow spots but it is so much fun! People comparing it to JOHN WICK movies are selling it short. Dev Patel is out for blood and he acts like it. Sharlto Copley is brilliant in his 5 minutes of screen time. As for Dev, man, major props to him!
Cultural side notes: (a) Kudos to Dev for putting the modern day saint in museum level ancient carved wooden sandals. (b) I'm still proper shocked to have seen that the musician was played by a living legend, tabla maestro Zakir Hussain. The interplay of sounds made by him and Dev in the workout scene is a clever play on a "jugalbandi", a sort of performance where there is a 'dialogue' between classical dancers and musicians; the musician puts down a beat and the dancer has to 'say' it back to them through their footwork. That scene was so much fun! (What's even more amazing is that they even had another scene before this as a primer, where the maestro plays two tablas as though they are two voices talking to each other. They thought this through!)

Sound is God: Zakir Hussain and the Universal Language of Rhythm
The hands that once danced upon the tabla have fallen silent, and the world finds itself bereft of a rhythm so profound it seemed to emanate from the very soul of the cosmos. Zakir Hussain, the maestro of maestros, transcended the mortal plane on December 15, 2024, leaving behind not just a legacy, but a symphony that will echo across generations. In his passing, we are reminded that the sound he created was no mere noise; it was the whisper of divinity itself, a bridge between the finite and the infinite.
Born into a lineage steeped in rhythm, Zakir was the son of the great Ustad Alla Rakha, a tabla virtuoso whose name alone evoked reverence. As a child, Zakir would awaken before dawn, drawn by the sound of his father’s tabla practice that reverberated through their home. Ustad Alla Rakha’s rigorous training was both a discipline and a blessing, instilling in Zakir a deep respect for tradition while nurturing his innate genius. But Zakir was not content to merely walk in the footsteps of his father. He charted his own course, crafting a path that was as unique as it was universal. His tabla did not merely accompany; it spoke, sang, wept, and rejoiced. It became a living, breathing entity, an extension of his very being. Each beat was a heartbeat, each silence a moment of transcendence...read full story

DAY 6147
Jalsa, Mumbai Dec 17, 2024/Dec 18 Tue/Wed 12:31 am
Some memories never leave you .. and the time occasion and sentiments expressed then remain ..
Such was the reflection with Ustad Zakir Hussain ..
It would be inappropriate to give detail to those moments .. some should remain within , and so they shall ...

Reverie - A rather roundabout tribute to Ustad Zakir Hussain || 16.12.24
Placed square between these pieces, I am posting this obviously very out of the blue.
May his legacy remain a shining light in the vast expanse of the musical landscape. Thank you, Ustad ji (though any expression of gratitude looks small in the face of what it's being said for).
I have many associations with taal, the tabla and rhythm in and of itself. That the Rise AU!verse is so intrinsically tied to it is no coincidence but I'm devastated and still in shock that I felt so compelled to do this.
Grief is... a lot for me to process in any given context, and this indescribable loss has innumerable layers to it.
It's been a while and a half. Please tread lightly if at all you choose to read. Obvious mention of death and tragedy. It's the point of it all.
Regards and Love,
Dhyan
