The minor Major Character - Inui (戌亥)
The Johoya, 情報屋(じょうほうや) - informant/information broker(think Izaya Orihara of Duarara) who presumably works as a private investigator/detective(探偵) and has connections with the loan sharks, i.e. our protagonists(of Yamikin Ushijima-kun) and the backing of the yakuza(sometime antagonists). He always invites Ushijima(his childhood friend) and co. to eat at his mom’s Okonomiyaki restaurant. And is easily bribed with candy(by Ushijima).
Even with Takada and Kouno and to some extent Ushijima(who I sometimes mistake for a beefy Inui without his glasses), by the end, Inui ends up very much the main ikemen of the manga.
His initial appearance with the flower tie somehow ends up seeming confusing what with the tie being Namerikawa’s(rather, it ends up looking like he was wearing Namerikawa’s clothes) and since then he appeared in back-ties and looks slightly different.
In a manga full of brawny yakuza, scary and also rugged loan sharks, weird thugs and low-life, and shady hosts, the lanky Inui in his always neat black-tie attire with beautiful long hands and feet, stands out too much. Plus, it is a hidden implication that he is great at his job because he is unusually charming and good-looking. While generally easy-going, genial and spaced-out, i.e. not a typical smooth talker, he is actually cunning and ‘smooth’ nonetheless. Honestly, sometimes it gets a little too exaggerated.
But sometimes - he is just so beautiful.
Especially his feet! And hands.
The way he moves, the way he is drawn.
I never particularly thought Ayano Go as anything more than cute and at times a little strange but...he really gets Inui's odd sexy attractiveness across.
I really, really wish there'd been more of all the main characters in the drama. In the manga at least, even with a similar focus on the debtors and arc-only characters, the MCs appear far more than they did in either the drama or movies. And specially Inui! For an MC, he probably guest appears once in a blue moon. But as Inui himself states, he is indispensable to the team as an ally.
(KauKau Finance - LtoR: Ezaki Takaaki, Ushijima Kaoru, Inui, Takada “Ruito”...and any odd secretary that happens to be working that season)
He already was this enigmatic shadow who guest appeared from time to time in the manga but in the drama has hardly much screen-time(through proportionally he appears more than ever in the manga considering how all the MCs are barely left with much screen-time). And well...he knows too much. He more or less connects the narrations in the latter half of the series. What with Ayano Go being ‘perfect’ as Inui(in every way: tall, long-fingered, slouching, casual, graceful, neat, dainty...), it leaves one wishing for more.
His love for cheap candy and snacks, his random musings, his own charming way of conning people...he brings about an odd contrast in tone.
Informant or PI, other than his ‘sources’, usually hostesses he doesn’t even drink with(and yet...), the drama has him frequently slip into almost non-disguise guises(hide a leaf in a forest) in a bid to con people or get information. He is a bigger extortionist than any of the loan sharks combined! And there is something so reminiscent of a kitsune(the mythological shape-shifting fox spirit) about Ayano Go as Inui that kindof completes this image.
All his “disguises”:-
Everything about the series just oscillates between dark, bleak and dismal around transient illusions. It is mostly just too depressingly hopeless and rawly vicious, sometimes in bizarre ways. Thus, most of the humor is ‘flat’, impassive or understated...
His interactions with Ushijima and Ezaki border between teasing and an oddly serious childlike nostalgia, with his tendency to drag the last word of his sentence playfully.
Even while we never really see it openly, more in the background and in talks only, they establish this nostalgic but human side to themselves in a life that is very normal despite their usual humdrum criminal occupation. Ezaki and Inui and even Ushijima were all three very much their mother’s boys(though not abnormally unlike their clients, more in a close, affectionate regular way) and Ushijima being the frank, dutiful and well-behaved orphaned one he gets really, really doted upon by the former two’s moms.
Not Kyosuke Yabe’s fault they cast him as Ezaki Takaaki(who irl is ~10 years older than Yamada and Ayano) nor that Ezaki, the martial artist with a hard-life, is supposed to look older, but it really is unbelievable that the three are supposed to be the same age(24 at the beginning, 30 by series end)
and funnily enough, younger than the more boyish and youthful-looking ex-host Takada(and Hayato)
And also Chiaki in the drama.
Ezaki, Ushijima and Inui: childhood friends and classmates.
Namerikawa: Ushijima, Ezaki, Inui. You were classmates, right? How do you like this little class reuinion, eh?
Inui and Ushijima going way far back from kindergarten. Inui fondly addresses them as Ushijima-kun and Ezaki-kun.
Also, by junior high school, he seemed to already be quite an ‘information broker’ especially for Ushijima’s sake.
Plus, mostly he does pull a save the day as well as a scrawny private investigator can.
Watching Ayano Go run is...adorable!! (in Shinjuku Swan, here...he’s like a long legged insect or a lanky floppy scarecrow surprisingly flying with the wind)
But on the other hand, while not as badly off as the rest where living life on the edge is concerned since he is the neutral party, as being the neutral party isn’t really an option he is forced to face some pretty dire choices. The entire last arc revolves around the consequences of his actions. Choosing one side means betraying the other. And his choice literally sentences the other side to death.
...
Inui: Ushijima-kun, Don’t get any funny ideas, will you. Ushijima: You’re going to report this to Namerikawa too are you? Inui? Inui: Eh!?
...
Namerikawa: Naa, Inui... What if it comes to between one or the other you have to choose - Me or Ushijima, whom would you choose?
However, as was proved with Takemoto’s case their world isn’t one where sentiment holds any value. To survive means to make the most self-serving ruthless decision. As he himself says:-
...
生きてくのに金は必要だ。金の流れが人の行動を表わすからね。 To survive money is essential. The flow of money dictates a person’s actions.
He states his loyalty in a wordy way. However, his association with the yakuza is uneasy and rife with an underlying threat to himself and finally, an outright threat made about his family. And especially his younger sister.
Yet both financially and for his own work for them and even his own safety, it is an inevitable connection.
Also, as he stands far too in the middle and with far too much information that others want. Thus, he does have few run-ins with trouble as well.
But honestly, the spin-off manga’s author Yamasaki Dodo(山崎童々)must really be super-crazy about Inui. For one he is the main narrator...
And about Inui and Namerikawa( 滑皮 ) coz...
Well...
Most of the spin-off manga, Ramen’s (vol 1 at least) is Namerikawa's sloppy eating vs Inui's ridiculously beautiful suggestive eating.
Namerikawa finally gets Inui to eat with him and is so overjoyed(though of course, its a job he got as usual).
He previously gets pissed that Inui only seems to eat out with Ushijima and never with him but...the way he eats! Did he really expect anyone would be honest and say they were so disgusted watching him, they can’t eat? To be clear...
Namerikawa’s feral violent sloppy eating in all its glory:-
And then Inui eating...
He outdoes any of the Shokugeki no Soma judge foodgasmic reactions...
...just!
