Strangely, the flight to Los Angeles somehow felt less lonely than the one she took to Aspen. This time she didn’t have Isaiah. She was by herself but her heart was full. Her vibrant smile, radiating with happiness, caught the attention of the stewardess and pilot as they asked about her glow. All she could say was: “I just got some good news.”
A small chuckle escaped her lips as she settled into her seat. Gazing out the window, Imani’s mind was filled with thoughts of her recent trip to Aspen. It had been a messy yet clarifying experience, especially with Jameson unexpectedly returning to her life.
It upended not only Jameson and Imani’s lives but also Isaiah and Camille’s. Isaiah wasted no time taking his grievances to Instagram. He posted vague messages on his Instagram story that sparked speculation from the tabloids. His words didn’t affect her much. 
She shared a little jab of her own at the basketball player on Instagram, then she went about her day. She was unaware of Genie and Jameson’s posts and EJ’s DM to Isaiah until later, but even then, she didn’t care. Her friends were only having her back in the situation.
Camille, on the other hand, was radio silent. The group hadn’t heard a single word from her since she left Aspen. It was probably for the best. Imani learned about Camille’s betrayal to Jameson days ago and she already reserved more than triple the rage for Camille than she felt for Sloane. It was an on-sight policy if she ever ran into either one of them. 
A soft ping broke through the silence of the airplane, jolting Imani out of her thoughts. With a quick glance down at her lap, she saw a text message from Jameson waiting for her.
[forever mine ❤️]: miss u already. let me know when you land.
A wide, genuine grin spread across her face as she reminisced about their earlier conversation.
“Come back to New York with me, baby. I want more time with you,” Jameson pleaded, his intense gaze fixed on her. His large hands rested gently and possessively on her hips as she stood between her legs, her own hands resting on his broad shoulders.
She couldn’t help but tease him in return. “Damn, you feenin’ for me bad, ain’t you?” Her playful tone masked her true desire. She wanted nothing more than to fly off to New York with him, to spend every moment in his arms to recoup all of the time they lost.
He pulled her even closer to his body and she wrapped her arms around his neck, resting her head against the top of his head. “Mhm. Just like you feenin’ for me,” he murmured against her skin. “So stop playing and come with me.”
Imani shook her head slightly, torn between wanting to be with him and the realities of their busy lives. She remembered telling him they should never spend a night apart again, but she had responsibilities. “I can’t, Jay. I have some important meetings with the label.”
“You could do a video conference.” Jameson placed small kisses against her neck, making his offer appetizing. Yet, she shook her head and pulled away slightly. 
“I can’t, baby. Besides, I think we need to spend a week apart so we can miss each other.” She sighed, knowing they needed this brief separation to evaluate everything that had happened.
“Well, I miss you already,” Jameson admitted, his voice laced with sincerity.
“I miss you too,” she replied softly.

The wheels of the plane touched down on the runway long ago. Her bags were swiftly loaded into the sleek black SUV, and she was settled comfortably in the plush leather backseat as the blurred lights of Los Angeles passed by. She was just about to send a text to Jameson, letting him know she had arrived safely when a phone call from her aunt Toni interrupted her.
Imani hesitated, knowing the conversation was inevitable. Toni’s friendship with Anaïs and the messy tabloids surrounding the trip, she was bound to know at least a little about what transpired. Imani’s finger hovered over the “ignore” button, but ultimately, she pressed “answer.”
“Hello,” she said cautiously.
“I heard you had quite the time in Aspen.” Toni said, forgoing any greeting. Imani should have known that Toni would be business first. She worked in PR – she knew what a good look was and the shit with Isaiah online was anything but that.
“I-um, it was fun,” Imani replied hesitantly. Only Toni had the power to leave her at a loss for words like this. She didn’t know how to absolve herself of guilt over what had happened between her and Jameson. “Jameson and I are working through our differences and getting back together.”
At that moment, Imani forgot that they were supposed to keep their relationship a secret. But who was she kidding? Toni seemed to have a sixth sense about these things — she probably already knew everything.
“I thought you were done with him last year. Didn’t you say he wasn’t the right man for you?”
“I did…but I can’t live without him, Auntie." Imani admitted with a heavy sigh. “He’s the love of my life, my soulmate.”
“Imani, what are you doing?” Toni’s voice held a hint of concern and exasperation.
“What do you mean?”
“First you break things off with Jameson then you jump into three different relationships in the span of six months, and now you’re back with him? What’s going to be different this time?”
Imani fell into silence as she struggled to find an answer to Toni’s question. What was going to be different? She had thought that love would be enough to get them through anything, but clearly, that wasn’t the case.
Toni sighed, breaking the silence. “Listen, I like Jameson. You know I do. His mother is my best friend. But even I knew to keep him away from you when you two were growing up.” 
“What the fuc–”
The silence on the other end of the phone was blistering. Toni didn’t take bullshit or disrespect. From anyone. “I mean…I’m sorry, Auntie. But excuse me?” It wasn’t a secret that Toni and Anais were good friends. Everybody knew that. But Imani didn’t realize that it wasn’t just coincidence she and Jameson didn’t meet until a few years ago.
“Thank you for getting yourself together.” Toni responded crisply. “Jamie – for all his positive traits – is almost exactly like his father. And you, my baby, are exactly like me. Hard exterior, all soft heart inside.”
Imani was silent — something that happened so rarely, it was astonishing. She didn't know his father but Imani knew herself. She was all heart for Jameson and always would be. 
“You two need to make sure this is really what you want, or else you’ll just end up right back where you were before.”
As much as Imani hated to admit it, her aunt was right. They needed to approach their relationship with a new mindset if they wanted it to work this time around. “You’re…you’re right,” she said slowly, finally finding the words to speak. “I’ll talk to him about it,” she promised.
“Good. We need to have lunch soon. I have some opportunities for you that you might be interested in.” Toni said confidently.
“Okay, we’ll talk,” Imani agreed, grateful for her auntie’s support and guidance. After saying their goodbyes, Imani ended the call and opened her text thread with Jameson, typing quickly about her flight home. But before she could send the message, he beat her by sending one.

The city's noise was background -- filtered through the glass doors of the quiet french bistro she'd decided to have lunch at. The faint hum of music played overhead but she couldn't place the song. Camille adjusted the silk scarf around her neck, a small attempt to present herself as composed, even though her heart still felt tender from the events in Aspen. 
Breaking up with Jameson had been difficult. She cried the entire flight home, isolated herself in her penthouse, and watched with horror as Isaiah put on a stunningly obvious show. Despite her anger and hurt, she had refrained from lashing out at Jameson -- probably because she knew he wouldn't hesitate to tell the whole story. After watching Isaiah's crash out, she wasn't interested in being the next one. She hadn't even unfollowed anybody. Camille simply logged out of Instagram and focused on herself. 
It was over. Why prolong the pain? 
Her personal development was important and after the mess of a woman she had become to wrap Jameson around her finger, Camille was more interested in sorting herself out than getting revenge. 
Reaching out to Kendrick and thanking him for driving her to the airport had been just good manners. After her behavior during his daughter’s engagement vacation, she felt it was important to show him a good side to who she was. He’d been gracious with his acceptance – had even been kind enough to accept her offer to buy him lunch. It was a surprise but Camille was determined to show him she wasn’t some deranged crazy woman who had lied to the man he considered to be his son. She was a normal girl who had lost her way a little bit.
When Kendrick arrived, his tall frame and calm demeanor instantly brought a sense of ease to the space. He greeted her with a warm smile, his eyes seemingly assessing – wanting to see if she was something his daughter should hate.
"Camille," he said, pulling out the chair across from her, "Thank you for inviting me. You didn’t have to though. I was doing what anyone else would have done.”
She shook her head, a soft laugh escaping her lips. "This isn’t about Aspen, not really. I just wanted to thank you. I’ve been…reflecting on things. You getting me out of there was the start of me wanting to change things in my life. You were being kind when I was falling apart...it meant a lot." 
Kendrick studied her for a moment before nodding. "I figured you might’ve needed a kind face. And, truthfully, I couldn’t let you leave like that without knowing you were okay." 
The waiter interrupted briefly, taking their orders, and as the conversation resumed, the initial formality began to melt away. They talked about the trip, about New York, and Camille’s plans to refocus on herself – of which he completely approved.
"I saw the posts," Camille admitted, swirling her glass of water absentmindedly. "Imani and Isaiah... It’s a mess.”
“Yes. It is.” Kendrick agreed with a nod of his head. His gaze came to her and softened. “But Jameson told me…everything. How you two ended. It's understandable. He feels guilty.”
It was on the tip of her tongue to say that he should but she knew it was bitterness. She hadn't been honest with him but she didn't deserve for those two to carry on under the same roof as her. She scanned that whole weekend wondering if it happened more than once. Did they fuck and then laugh about her not knowing? Was she their foreplay? “It's…it doesn't matter. I realized I don’t want to be part of that strange, toxic thing they've got going on. I’ve been bitter, jealous, and honestly...It's exhausting. I need to move forward." 
Kendrick tilted his head slightly, his expression thoughtful. "That’s a mature way to look at it. Not everyone can step back and admit when it’s time to let go." 
Camille smiled faintly. "I didn’t want to end up stuck in a loop of what-ifs. Jameson and I were doomed from the night we met." She hesitated, her gaze flickering to Kendrick. "But I think I’m ready to start fresh." 
The spark between them became undeniable as the conversation deepened. Kendrick shared stories of his past, his voice steady and soothing, while Camille found herself laughing and leaning in closer. It wasn’t until the waiter brought the check that they realized how much time had passed. 
As they stepped out into the crisp New York air, Camille turned to him, her heart pounding with a mix of excitement and trepidation. "I know this might seem…insane. But I feel like there’s something here? I don’t know what it is yet, but I’d like to find out." 
Kendrick hesitated, his hands slipping into his coat pockets as he searched for the right words. "Camille, you’re...a wonderful girl. But this is everything you aren’t looking for. It’s messy. It’s complicated. Jameson is—" 
"Jameson and I are over," she interrupted gently. "And I’m not looking for anything messy. I just... I feel something, and I don’t want to ignore it." 
She could see him waver, the loyalty to his family overcoming the brief spark of something between them. 
“I’m very flattered, Camille. But I think it’d be best for us to leave things at…mutual appreciation.”
Disappointment set into her frame, slumping her shoulders. One afternoon with Kendrick had been more exciting than six months with Jameson. She couldn't help but think about what would have happened if she had met him first. “I…I understand. Thank you again. I'll never forget your kindness.”
He opened his mouth to say more but Camille turned on her heel and strode away, embarrassment tinting her skin.

Jameson cradled his phone between his shoulder and ear as he leaned against the kitchen counter, flipping through the images on his iPad. The suggestions for Midnight & Dawn’s next video shoots were missing something. His original plan had been to make Caught Up a single. Camille was meant to star but after his relationship with her had imploded, he wanted to move forward with something else. That meant his team had a week and a half to pick a new single, and storyboard a video. It wasn’t fully working. He couldn’t figure out what it was driving him crazy. “I’m not saying it’s shit. I’m just – it’s missing something.” He mumbled into the phone. His PR agent, manager, and creative director were on a conference call, doing their best to help him pull things together. 
The week he had taken off to celebrate Genie and EJ hadn’t caused any plans to hit a snag but he was feeling overwhelmed by the level of decision-making he had to involve himself in. He had only been back in time a few days and everything was radically different. No Camille, new second single, new plans, EJ and Genie were engaged. And most importantly, he had Imani back. He was a different man than the one who had arrived in Aspen with his life ‘together’. 
“We can always regroup, Jay.” He heard his creative director say with patience but he knew she had to be frustrated. They’d spent a month beforehand planning all this shit out. 
“I know, I know. I’m just…I’m sorry. We’ll table everything but single two for now.” His focus was shot. All he thought about was Imani. He cycled between being frustrated she wasn’t with him and trying to keep his head above water. It was a blessing to be overwhelmed this way. The album had hit platinum quickly and people wanted more far sooner than he thought they would. 
“I’m thinking we drop the next single soon. Give people something more to talk about. Build it with a few performances and then when the video is done, we drop it.” his PR agent said. It was a solid outline. 
Jameson nodded before verbally agreeing. “Turnaround is going to be tight but I think we’ve got it.”
The conversation continued, his mind racing with plans to keep the momentum going. The double album was his most ambitious project yet, and every detail mattered. He barely heard the sound of the doorbell over his thoughts, distractedly he made his way to the front door. When he opened it, he froze.
Imani stood on the stoop, the cold night air curling around her in soft wisps. She wore a long coat, her hands tucked into the pockets, and her eyes held a mixture of hesitation and determination.
“You just gone stand there?” she said, her voice gentle but teasing. “It’s cold out here, boy.”
Jameson’s heart slammed against his ribs. “I gotta go.” He mumbled to his team, ignoring their continued chattering. He lowered the phone from his ear and hung up, completely forgetting everything that had annoyed him. “You’re here.”
He gave her a stunned grin before stepping aside, wordlessly inviting her in. She stepped inside his home for the first time ever as Jameson snagged her suitcase and heaved it inside. There was a beat of silence between them. He could smell her perfume and it settled in his bones that she was with him. It seemed to snap him out of his daze.
“I like your house, baby.”
Jameson’s gaze swept her body – from head to toe – as she walked around his living room. He committed her to memory as if she’d disappear. He had done his best not to envision her there. It was essential to give his relationship with Camille a chance. But Cami was gone. He wasn’t ignoring his heart anymore. And his heart felt glad to see her in his space. He dropped her suitcase and cast it aside.
“Thank you.” He spoke softly, a grin on his lips. “How'd you know where I lived?”
“Genie” she answered with ease. “She even offered me your key.”
Jameson laughed softly. “Well, thank God for Genie. I thought we needed to miss each other?”
Imani peered over her shoulder at him, shrugging as she kept walking. Through his living room and into the kitchen. “...I did miss you.”
He grinned, reaching for her, and was delighted she didn’t make him chase her. “I missed you more.”

Jameson lay sprawled on his back, his chest rising and falling steadily. Imani lay on top of him, her fingertips lazily tracing the contours of his skin. He kissed her neck softly, unable to let her go. His lips pressed to her skin constantly, soaking up every sigh or moan she gave him.
Her touch was light, deliberate, and distracting. He let out a quiet hum of contentment, his hand slipping beneath the sheet to glide along the curve of her hip.
“You’re quiet,” he teased, his voice low and rough. “I stressed you out?”
Imani smiled against his chest, her lips brushing his skin. “I’m just enjoying the view,” she murmured, her tone playful.
“What a coincidence. Me too,” he said with a grin, earning a soft pinch to his side.
She laughed, the sound warm and intimate, before falling silent again. A few moments passed before she broke the stillness.
“I told my auntie about us,” she said softly, her voice hinting at trepidation.
Jameson’s chest shook beneath her cheek as he let out a quiet laugh. “Already? I thought I was the one that couldn’t keep a secret.” Toni had come into his mother’s life when he was a kid. His father had left and Toni became their support. At least until Anais began dating Kendrick. But as far back as he could remember, Toni was around. And she didn’t hesitate to fuss at him.
“Shut up.” Imani muttered, lifting her head to look at him. “She called me when I got back to Los Angeles. The shit with Isaiah was…A lot.” Imani admitted, “And I couldn’t lie.”
Jameson raised an eyebrow, his fingers idly tracing the small of her back. “I can only guess what Toni had to say. Something about it not being a good idea? ‘You can’t trust him, Mani baby’ or something close?” It didn’t matter that she was his mom’s best friend, she disapproved heavily of Jameson and Imani getting together. She hadn’t been shy about it at all.
Imani’s lips curved into a small, knowing smile. “Not exactly. She said we’d better be serious this time. No games, no drama.”
“Well, she and I agree for once,” he murmured, his tone thoughtful but tinged with humor. “I’m not letting you go again. I’m not living without you anymore. I’ve had enough of that to last me a lifetime.”
Her expression softened, and she shifted to lay on the bed, her body pressing to his side as she rose on her elbow, her hair spilling over her shoulder as she looked down at him. “That’s why I was thinking... maybe –” She struggled to say the words and Jameson’s eyes were wide with surprise. She didn’t hesitate and she didn’t stutter. “Maybe…we…we should try couples therapy.”
If he wasn’t laying down, Jameson would have fallen over. His hand stilled against her back, his gaze locking onto hers. “That’s not a bad idea, baby.” he said, his voice steady and sincere. “Therapy has helped me work through a lot. And if it can help with us too...” He reached up, brushing a stray curl from her face. “I’m in. I want it, Mani. All of it. I want you. I want us.”
A slow smile spread across her lips, and she leaned down, her breath warm against his skin. “I want us too,” she whispered, her voice laced with quiet intensity. “More than anything.”
Her lips found his, soft and searching, and he responded in kind, his hand sliding up to cradle the back of her neck. The kiss deepened, and for a moment, the rest of the world ceased to exist. When they finally broke apart, she rested her forehead against his, a contented sigh escaping her lips.
“Think Toni will be proud of us for therapy?” Jameson asked, his voice teasing as his fingers danced along her arm.
Imani laughed softly, “Knowing her, she’d never say it. But even if she isn’t, it’s not about her. It’s about us.”
“Just us.” Jameson agreed, pulling her body over his again. For the first time in a long time, everything felt right.

Kendrick stretched out on his couch, one arm draped over the back, phone in hand. He stared at Anaïs’ name on the screen, his thumb hovering over the call button. He should’ve told her about Camille days ago, but every time he thought about it, something held him back.
Maybe it was how easy things felt between them lately, how after all these years, their friendship still stood solid despite everything they’d been through. Maybe it was the part of him that still wanted her to see him the way she used to. Whatever it was, he couldn’t get the words out of his mouth. If Anais asked if he was tempted — what could he say but the truth? He was. Kendrick exhaled, shaking off the thought, and hit the button. He had to tell her. Nobody gave him better advice than she did. He had to know how to broach the topic with Jameson.
The phone barely rang before she answered. “Ken.” Just his name, warm and familiar. A small smile tugged at his lips despite the weight in his chest.
“Hey,” he said, relaxing into the sound of her voice. “You busy?”
“Un-uh,” she said, and he could hear the rustling of fabric, like she was settling into bed. “I was actually thinking about you.”
That shouldn’t have made his heart kick the way it did.
“Oh yeah?” he murmured. “What about me?”
She sighed softly. “I needed somebody to talk to.” “You can talk to me about anything.” “I know. I..I heard from my mother today.”
Kendrick’s easy grin faded. He sat up, gripping the phone a little tighter. “What?” Anais and her mother didn’t get along. He didn’t know details but the two women had a fairly complicated relationship. He had only met her once…and it had been a disaster of a dinner. Ana had been in tears by the time it was over and her mother was uninvited from their wedding. It had been horrifying. He doubted the two would ever talk again.
“It was an email. She didn’t call.” Her voice was calm, like this was any other conversation, but Kendrick felt the shift and he didn’t like it.
“What’d she want?” Kendrick asked, sharper than he intended.
Anaïs sighed. “JG would like to talk to me.”
His heart dropped into his stomach. JG. Julian Gautreau. Jameson’s father. He was a ghost haunting them during their relationship and now he was haunting their friendship. Kendrick watched with envy as the two made a life together. He hated Julian — envy made things complicated. As Anais’ star rose, Julian withdrew more and more. He became a mystery to any and everyone around Ana. He was Mr. Anais Lucas…and he couldn’t take it. Eventually, he abandoned her and their son. Even though he was gone, the effects him lingered. Anais found it hard to trust. Jameson suffered the most. How dare he come back twenty years later?
“JG is a fucking—,” Kendrick muttered. “Ken, please.”
He could tell that she was getting upset so Kendrick stopped but he could feel the anger almost suffocating him.
“He asked about Jamie. Said he saw him on tv and could hardly believe that was his son,” she said carefully. “Wanted to know how he was doing. He—he told me he regrets everything.”
Kendrick scoffed. “Twenty years too fucking late.”
“I know,” she murmured.
But there was something in her tone—something soft. And it made something ugly twist inside Kendrick. For years, he had been the one beside her, the one who stayed. He helped pick up the pieces, he raised Jameson, he made sure she never felt alone. He knew her pain better than anyone. And now, what? One conversation and suddenly this man had a place in her thoughts?
“He doesn’t deserve your time, Anaïs,” Kendrick said, his voice low.
“I never said he did,” she replied gently. “But Jameson is his son.”
Silence stretched between them. Normally, it would have been comfortable. Tonight, it wasn’t. Kendrick’s fingers tightened around his phone. Jameson was his son? Then what was he supposed to be to him? He had called to tell her about Camille. He had called because Anaïs mattered too much to keep things from her. But now, jealousy had a stranglehold on his thoughts.
“I gotta go,” he muttered.
“Ken—”
He hung up before she could say anything else. The action shocking him. His jaw clenched as he stared at his phone. He didn’t like this feeling. Didn’t like the way it made him feel like he had something to prove. Without thinking, he scrolled through his contacts. Camille’s name stared back at him.
He had rejected her for his son. For Anais. She sparked something in him — something that hadn’t been touched since Anais left him — and he had walked away from it. It seemed to be for nothing.
Kendrick hit call.
She picked up instantly, her voice timid and hesitant. “I…I didn’t think I’d hear from you again. Hi.”
Kendrick leaned back, sighing. His chest still felt tight. “That date you wanted? I’m free.”
She was quiet, surprise evident. “I…I thought you said —” “I did. And I was right. But…you were right too. There’s something there. And I don’t think we should look away from it.”
Five minutes later, they had made a date. But it didn’t make him feel better.

The air in New York felt suffocating, a stark contrast to the playful energy she felt when she first arrived. Now, there was only silence — a heavy, all-consuming silence that seemed to grow larger with each passing moment. His house was colder than the city air in January. If she knew that therapy would end with them not talking, she wouldn’t have suggested it.
Imani sat stiffly on the couch, her discomfort palpable as she avoided making eye contact with Jameson. He sat just a few feet away on a barstool, but it might as well have been football fields between them. The tension in the room was thick and suffocating, mirroring the atmosphere of their relationship.
“So this it? It’s just gonna be silent for the rest of the time you’re here?” Jameson’s words cut through the air like a knife. His deep baritone voice, normally soothing to Imani, now sounded like a chair dragged across a wooden floor.
“The fuck else do we have to talk about? You said it all in therapy.” Imani shot back, her tone dripping with bitterness and resentment.
“Why’d you suggest therapy if you wasn’t with it?” Jameson turned to face her full, their eyes locking in a tense stare-down.
“I didn’t know it would turn into the ‘fuck Imani’ fest.”“You know that’s not what it was.”
“Yes it was! You were so comfortable telling a stranger everything I did wrong.” She scoffed. “Then the bitch had the nerve to say she don’t think we should be together. And then you gon’ say let’s hear her out.”
“I told her my dirt too! That’s what therapy is! You talk, you tell the truth. You figure out a way to live the best possible way you can.” Jameson retorted, “You didn’t even want to talk about shit. You just wanted to pretend.”
“Nah, that’s not it.” She shook her head. Her leg now bouncing like it had a mind of its own. “That’s not it. I would rather play pretend to a bitch than have her thinkin’ she can tell me what to do with my life like she did you. She don’t fuckin’ know me. She don’t know us!”
Jameson froze, the jab of him doing what his therapist told him to do sinking in. “Do you hear yourself?” he asked, incredulous as he leaned forward on the bar stool. 
She glared at him with disbelief. “Yeah, what the fuck is wrong with what I’m sayin’? That bitch don’t know us. She only knows what you tell her.”
“That’s why you tell her the truth! What did I lie about, Imani?”
“I never said you lied,” Imani snapped back. “I said she don’t know us. She don’t know all the good shit we have goin’ on. That’s why she was so quick to say we don’t need to be together.”
“That’s not what she said. She suggested that we evaluate if we should be together. That’s her job. We’ve both said we aren’t good for each other, Mani. Just because she said that shit doesn’t mean we’re going to break up!”
“Okay, you ain’t supposed to be agreeing with her though! You was too quick to say let’s hear her out.”
“We should! I’m not saying she’s right about everything but at least let her finish talking before you get defensive. And she had a point about the way we use sex against each other, Mani, you have to admit that”
Imani scoffed, “she probably not even gettin’ good dick. That’s why she said that.”
Jameson rolled his eyes, brushing his hand over his face in frustration. “You’re acting like she had something against you. You mean as fuck right now.”
“And you being too nice about a bitch you don’t even know!”
“Should I do like you? Lash out because somebody made a valid point about our broken ass relationship?”
“Oh fuck you, Jameson,” Imani spat back at him. “At least one of us is sticking up for us.”
Jameson laughed sardonically, shaking his head. “Well, it’s about time you decided we’re worth fighting for.”
Imani’s eyes narrowed as she retorted, “nigga, fuck you!” 
“Mhm. Yeah. Since it upset you so much, we don’t have to go back. Happy?”
Her glare intensified as she murmured, “Fine with me,” Imani crossed her arms tightly over her chest. “You probably fucked her anyways.”
He stared at her for a long moment, silent before he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. A minute passed before he spoke again – his voice tense. “I love you but you pissing me off. I’ma take a walk. I’ll be back with dinner. You want something?” He was clearly forcing himself to be calm.
“Nope. I’m fine.” She answered quickly with a sharp tone. Right now, Imani didn’t want anything from him. Jameson being out of her sight sounded more appealing than anything else. 
With a roll of his eyes, Jameson rose from the bar stool and headed out the front door. It clicked closed softly behind him – not the slam she expected.

Paris had been good for her — time to think, to breathe, to put distance between herself and everything that had kept her stagnant. She’d worked on herself, on her art, on her emotional baggage. She’d tried to forget about Jameson, or at least push the ache of him to the back of her mind, but it hadn’t been easy. Especially when she heard about his reunion with Imani. Part of her knew that exposing Camille had done that but Sloane didn’t particularly care. Her former friend had really thought she could double cross her. Even if it meant putting Jamie and that girl back together — she wasn’t going to let Camille beat her.
Sloane had always been good at pretending — good at being the supportive friend, the person who kept her feelings in check, who never let her emotions get in the way of getting things from others. But now, as she passed through the sliding glass doors and out into the crisp, early evening air of Los Angeles, the facade cracked just a little. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, the familiar sound almost jarring in the quiet of the night. She pulled it out, her heart skipping when she saw the name flashing on the screen. It was a text from Christian.
"Long time no talk. I hope you’re okay, Lo."
Sloane hesitated, her thumb hovering over the screen as she thought about her answer. Paris had been a beautiful distraction, but she was still the same person, still struggling with the same feelings she had when she left. Christian had put his feelings away. He didn’t mention Imani to her, he didn’t hang around her. He knew when to let go. Sloane wish she had that instinct. Her fingers typed quickly, a simple response: "It was good. Needed some time away."
She hit send and stuffed the phone back in her pocket, stepping into a car waiting at the curb as she left the building. As the car pulled away, she couldn’t help but feel a sense of dread creeping up her spine. She was home, yes, but nothing felt the same. It felt like she was walking into someone else’s life.
The car sped through the city, lights flickering by in a blur. She could already see the places she’d been—places that now held memories of a life that felt too far away. She wasn’t the same person who had left months ago. She had changed, but Los Angeles hadn’t. And maybe that was the problem.
Her apartment building loomed ahead, the comforting sight of it suddenly feeling a little less familiar. The doors opened, and she stepped inside, taking a breath before making her way to the elevator. When the doors closed, it felt like she was closing off a chapter. But what came next? That was the question she still couldn’t answer.
Sloane’s phone buzzed again. Another text from Christian. "Dinner tonight? Let’s catch up."
She smiled, her heart lifting just a little. It was a sweet offer but she had far too much to do."Busy tonight. Tomorrow?" As the elevator doors opened, Sloane stepped out into the hallway. Her apartment, still the same, greeted her with a silence that felt heavy, a silence that only seemed to echo her uncertainty. But she was here. She was back. She could still hear herself screaming, watching Jameson walk away from her. A shudder ran through her body as she shook the memory away.
She was going to fix it. Everything would be fine. And he’d never walk away from her again.

Time Heals.....Chapter Fifty-Four
“Let me see, let me see, let me see,” Joyce said in a rush as she ushered Robyn into the house. Robyn smiled as they sat down on the couch, “Mama, take a deep breath. You’re making me nervous.”
“I can’t. My babies are getting married. I’ve have been waiting for this day since I don’t know how long.”
Robyn laughed as she held out her hand and Joyce squealed, “Aww…Angel, it’s beautiful. My son did pretty good.”
“Thanks Mama.”
“So…how did he ask?”
“He didn’t.”
Joyce paused and gave Robyn a look, “what do you mean he didn’t ask?”
“He didn’t ask me.”
“So how are you engaged?”
“It’s complicated.”
“How complicated?”
“Complicated like she didn’t actually let me propose to her.”
  Robyn turned towards the foyer where Chris was walking in, “where’d you come from? You were supposed to be taking the girls to dance practice.”
“Closed practice set and I didn’t want to sit in the parking lot. Talking about the ring.”
“Yes. Come sit.”
Chris moved to sit next to Robyn on the couch and kissed her temple.
“What do you mean she didn’t let you propose to her?” Joyce asked
“Exactly what I said.”
“I am so confused.”
Chris chuckled, “ok , the quick version is I originally tried to propose a few months ago and she wasn’t ready so she decided to put a hold on it.”
“And I told him that when I was ready to accept, I’d put the ring on,” Robyn added.
“So you put your own ring on your finger?” Joyce replied.
“Yes.”
“That is not a proper proposal.”
“Mama, it works for us. We’re engaged. Let’s just leave it at that.”
Joyce sighed, “somehow I should’ve expected y’all to do this all weird.”
Chris and Robyn laughed.
“So…wedding planning?”
Robyn looked at Chris and shrugged, “it’s up to him. I’m not picky.”
“You’re the bride, I would expect him to say that to you.”
Chris chuckled, “this is Robyn, I wouldn’t expect to say anything else. I haven’t thought about it really. It’s only been a few days since she put the ring on.”
“Are you nervous?”
“What’s there to be nervous about?”
“I don’t know, I’m just trying to read the room right now. I feel like I’m more excited than y’all are.”
“For us, it’s just another step in the direction we were already headed. I don’t want it to be a big deal before we even start planning for it.”
Joyce nodded her head, “so can y’all stay for lunch?”
“Of course, Mama.”
“Good.”
Robyn waited until Joyce left into the kitchen to turn to Chris, “she’s suspicious.”
“What?”
“Did you not see her face?”
“Yea but why would she be suspicious? Of what?”
“I don’t think she thinks we’re gonna get married.”
“Robyn, I doubt that.”
“Did you not see her face? It completely dropped when you said you haven’t thought about it. She already looking at me weird for putting my own ring on.”
“Why are you even concerned about that?”
“Because it is your mother. She’s important.”
“Robyn, she loves you. She knows that I love you. It’s nothing for you to be worried about. Whether she believes it or not doesn’t mean anything to me as long as it happens. Look, it took a long time to get you to this point, I am not ruining this by rushing.”
“Would you be upset if we didn’t have a wedding?”
“What do you mean?”
“Like if we skip the whole ceremony thing.”
“Is that what you want to do?”
“I just don’t have the patience for what a ceremony entails but I also don’t want to take that experience away from you.”
“Robyn, I’m divorced. You’re a widow. We’ve both been down the road of a wedding ceremony. My only concern is I don’t want you to regret not having one years down the road.”
“I don’t know. I just don’t see the point of one especially since we’ve both already done this before. It’s not like it’s either of ours first marriage.”
“True but its our first time being married to each other. Look, I know our parents will probably have a conniption about this but I will stand by whatever you decide to do. If you don’t want a ceremony then we don’t have to have one.”
“I don’t know. What are the girls going to say?”
“That’s the tricky part. I think they’ve been looking forward to being flower girls.”
“Ugh…this is so stressful already.”
“Baby, relax. Maybe if we sit down and talk this all the way through, we can come up with a compromise. We need to talk about the houses and stuff too.”
“Do we have to?”
“Yes, Robyn, we can’t live in separate houses. That kinda how this works.”
Robyn pouted and sighed, “See…stressful.”
Chris chuckled and hugged her to him, “we will figure it out and we will take as long as it is necessary to do so, ok?”
“Ok.”
“Let’s see if the food is ready then we’ll go get the girls.”
   “I can’t believe you didn’t tell us he proposed before,” Melissa said over video chat. Leandra nodded in agreement as she took a sip of her drink.
“I hadn’t accepted so I didn’t see the point of saying anything,” Robyn replied.
“It doesn’t matter. You still could’ve say something. Besides why’d you not accept the first time?”
“Because I wasn’t ready and I wasn’t going to be pushed into it by anybody.”
“And you think that’s what we would’ve done?”
“Absolutely. Its bad enough my mother was giving me the side eye about me and Chris getting into a relationship and not discussing it with her. The moment I said anything about a proposal, she would’ve started planning the wedding herself.”
“Speaking of wedding planning-“
“Don’t. Me and Chris are not even going there right now. We just got engaged a few days ago.”
“So? You’re not supposed to be engaged forever.”
“Of course not but we aren’t focused on the wedding right now, if there is one.”
“If? Trouble already?”
“What? No. We’re trying to decide if we’re gonna have a ceremony or not. We’re definitely getting married. I did not put this ring on for nothing.”
“You mean he.”
“No, I mean me. He started to propose, I told him not to and took the ring from him.”
“You had your own engagement ring?”
“For months. And we made a deal that once I was ready to be engaged, I’d just put the ring on and that was that.”
“What the hell kind of proposal is that?’
“Ours.”
“Y’all are fucking weird. What about the getting on one knee and stuff?”
“I had all of that already and I didn’t want it again. We did it the way it worked for us and that’s that.”
“Y’all did it the way it worked for you, you mean?’
“Chris agreed. I didn’t force him. If he wanted a traditional proposal he could’ve easily said so.”
“Considering it took forever to get you to date him, I’m sure he wasn’t trying to rock the boat.”
“There was no boat to rock. He knew what the deal was and he knew why I was more comfortable doing it this way. I don’t want all this crazy hoopla. Why must a proposal be all exacting anyway? The importance is in the ring and what it signifies. All that other shit, the knee and flowers and stuff is for show. And I chose to skip the show.”
“I don’t know whether to be impressed or concerned,” Leandra interjected.
“Why?”
“It sounds so unromantic and boring.”
“On purpose. I did the flash. I did the show. And it changed nothing. I don’t want to go through it again.”
“Ok but you should really rethink this whole not having a ceremony thing.”
“We are still technically thinking about it and trying to find a way to compromise if we do end up having a ceremony.”
“Good, I would like to be a bridesmaid.”
“Even if we have a ceremony, I’m probably skipping that part too.”
“Ugh….you are taking all the fun out of the wedding.”
“You say that because you are the guest. You are not planning it, paying for it or having to star in it. I’m taking the stress out and making this as simple as it can possibly be. I’m marrying him, that should be enough.”
“And how does he feel?’
“He’s just worried about whether the girls will be disappointed or not, that’s the only reason we’re talking about a compromise. We’ve both been married already. We’ve been through all the motions, we just want what really works for us.”
“I guess.”
“You think I’m wrong.”
“I think there’s something wrong with you.”
“Why?”
“Most women would love to be dotted on and fawned over, you wanna be in the background of your own wedding process and I don’t get it.”
“I don’t want the attention. I don’t want the extra. I just want to get married, go home to my husband and kids and just live life normally.”
“Robyn, it’s only one day.”
“One long ass day that I don’t want to participate in. If I have any type of ceremony, it’s not gonna be for me.”
“Wow.”
“I didn’t call you guys to be judged.”
“We’re not judging you, Robs. We’re just really worried,” Melissa said softly, “it is you and Chris’s day and things should be done the way you see fit. We just want it to be done that way because you want it that way and not for any other reason.”
“What other reason could there be? We’re not hiding anything. There’s nothing new going on in our lives besides this. I’ve gotten past all the excitement stuff. I just want peace and simplicity. Why does that make me crazy?”
“It doesn’t.”
“But y’all making me feel like I am.”
“We’re not trying to, Sis. We swear.”
“Robs, we just don’t want you to regret anything, that’s all,” Leandra replied.
“Why does everybody- never mind can we talk about something else?”
“Sure. Let me tell about my new boyfriend,” Melissa said.

  Chris found Robyn sitting on his back porch, “Hey Babe.”
Robyn looked over and smiled before turning her face back to the setting sun.
“When’d you get here?”
“An hour ago. You were still out with the girls.”
“I was looking for you once I noticed your car in the garage. You ok?’
“I’m good. You?”
“I’m great. Can I sit?”
Robyn scooted over to make room for him on the swing. The girls had pestered him into getting a porch swing, it came in handy for times he just wanted to relax. He sat down and turned to face her, “what’s going on?”
“Nothing, just thinking.”
“About?”
“Everything. Nothing.”
“Wanna talk about it?’
“Not right now. I’ll let you know.”
“No problem.”
Chris took her hand and twisted her engagement ring around her finger.
“Why do you keep doing that?’
“I’m still getting used to seeing it on your hand.”
“Still adjusting to it being there. I’m used to the weight of it, it’s just when I close my hand, I have to remember it’s there.”
“We’re still fairly new to this.”
“True. You ok?”
“I’m good. The girls are cleaning up and putting away their new clothes and I figured I’d come look for you since you were here.”
“That’s nice. Did you talk to them about the ceremony thing?”
“I thought we’d do it together, gives more a united front kind of thing.”
“True.”
“You give any thought about the houses?”
“I can sell mine. It’s smaller than yours.”
“You sure you wanna move back to Houston?”
“Yea, I lived here for years before I moved. I never had a problem with moving back here.”
“Ok cool. I mean we can get our own house and start over.”
“Why? You barely lived in this house before you got divorced and we already gutted and redid the master bedroom, unless you feel it’s necessary, I don’t have an issue living here.”
“I just wanted to make sure. I don’t have no problem selling it.”
“The girls are comfortable here. There’s no reason to start over.”
“Ok.”
“You talk to Mama?”
“Yea. She’s anxious.”
Robyn sighed, “that’s be expected.”
“You talk to Mama Fenty?”
“Yea, she just wants me to let her know the date so she can let the family know.”
“We’re still gonna do invitations even if we forgo a ceremony.”
“I know but with my family, you gotta give a lot of advance notice before you send out the invitations. They are hassle sometimes.”
Chris chuckled, “you sure you doing ok?”
“Yea, I’m great. Why do you keep asking me that?”
“I get this weird vibe coming from you and you’ve been at your house for the past few days so I don’t know if this is something recent or if you’ve been like this for a while.”
“Chris, you really do worry too much. I am fine.”
“If you weren’t, you’d tell me, right?”
“Yes, I’d tell you.”
Chris wrapped his arm around her shoulders and Robyn leaned into him. He kissed her forehead then placed a kiss in her hair, “it’ll be dark soon. You staying?”
“Yea, I’ll stay.”
“Good.”

I was finally on my way home. Thank the Lord. I seriously couldn’t have gotten out of that office quicker. I work in a tax office as a receptionist. I know worlds most boring fucking job ever. But it pays very well and money is not boring. Anyway, I was finally on my way to Davids place because we had previously agreed to stay in and just hang out. The two of us. We’ve both so busy with our work that we set aside tonight for us. I stop the car in the driveway after being let into the gate. I grab my bag, jacket, and my keys and make my way inside. I unlock the glass door and proceed to take off my glossy heather grey heels. I hang my keys on the hook and carry my bag to lay it down on the pool table.
“David! I’m home, baby!” I said excitedly. I waited a couple seconds for a response from him and nothing.
“David?!” I yell again while walking around the house. Confused, I decide to text him asking where he is.

It took him a while to text back with an excuse. I don’t want to sound petty and jealous but we set this day aside specifically.
David❤️: Holy shit, baby! I’m so sorry. I totally forgot. I had to film with Jason cause his memory card broke. I’m coming back right now.
“Aw man!” I yelled into the empty house. I knew he’d try and get here as soon as possible but it sucked that he wasn’t now. He does everything for me I should just be glad that he is trying. Some guys don’t but he does. As I start to trap myself in thinking about amazing my boyfriend is, an idea passed through my frustrated mind. Maybe he isn’t here, but I can sure as hell make him wish he was. I’ve been with this kid for 3 years, I know what it takes to ya know...get things started. I grab one of his shirts and my black lace panties. I throw my hair up and go to the mirror with my phone in hand. An outfit like this is sure to drive him nuts. I lift up the side of the shirt closest to the mirror and lean on my one leg to make my ass look big. I snap the picture and send it his way. This is revenge. He can never control himself when it comes to me no matter the time or the place.

I felt awful. I know how long she’s been looking forward to our night and I ruined it. I told Jason the situation and he understood. He started to drive me back home which we were thirty minutes away from. When I suddenly get a picture sent to me from Y/N. I open my phone to see her in the big mirror with my shirt on and black underwear on.
“Jesus Christ.” I said quietly while choking on my tongue. She was gonna torture me in the car, over text message, with Jason in the car. She knows exactly how to fuck with me in that way and she knows I can’t control what happens down there when that time comes. I bite my lip and look to Jason who is too focused on the road to notice this. My fingers fly across the keyboard.

One last picture I hoped. I open my phone to Y/N in the mirror with the guys. They had no idea what she was just doing. Now they are all going to be there when I get back so I will have to wait hours to get to her completely. She is the devil in an angels suit. She was the ultimate punisher. I inhale through my nose as we finally reached my house the driveway filled with cars. I walked in to all of the guys chilling and talking to one another some of them talking to Y/N. She gasped and got up slowly from her seat but came over to give me a kiss.
“Hi.” She said to me quietly. I looked at her up nd down. She looked like she had never done anything bad in her life. An innocent little snowflake but I was the only one that really knew how wrong that was. i touched her hip and pulled her a bit closer.
“I. Will deal with you later.” I growled in her ear. She shivered at the sound of me. Knowing I have that effect on her gives me such a power rush. She walks away from me swaying her hips back and forth in the process. God the things I was going to do to her. The night went on and we exchanged glances from time to time. When Zane was the last to leave Y/N shut the door behind him. I waited by sitting on the edge of the pool couch. She turned around and found me. She discarded her jacket.
“What now?” She said wrapping her arms around my neck. I stand up and I grab her ass so that she she can straddle me in the air. She wraps her little legs around me.

She batted her thick lashes at me and looked up with her sparkling Y/E/C eyes. “Let’s just say...you’ll feel this tomorrow.”

Best 100 Songs of the decade!
As a new decade will be upon us shortly (the 20’s) I wanted to share some of my favourite tracks from the last 10 years. I’m a pop and rap guy mostly so that’s what you can mostly expect but hopefully a few surprises along the way. I’ll post 100 songs I really loved (in no particular order) then my top 25 absolute favourites at the end. Ok here we go
~Bad Romance - Lady Gaga
To limit myself to just one GaGa track is cruel and not easy, Edge of Glory and Born this Way are both anthems and technically this came out last moment 2009 ..but didn’t pop until 2010. A classic that makes it to most my playlists.
~Airplanes- B.O.B ft Hayley Williams (A classic no need to say more.)
~Love the Way you Lie - Eminem ft Rihanna
A absolutely brutal tune about a toxic relationship full of of lies and abuse, the powerful video really sells the tone of the song.
~Rescue Me - Skepta
Used to love Grime but gone off it for a while now. I wouldn’t call this an outright grime track but Skepta def brings the gritty uk rap scene on this one.
~Forget you ~ Ceeloo Green
Thou I prefer the Gnarls Barkley music style, this is still a awesome tune. Always fun to tell someone to do one in a sing song melody.
~Written in the Stars- Tinie Tempah ft Eric Turner
Used to love me some TT, this was a real catchy banger with great chorus by Eric Turner.
~Raise your glass - Pink (Not much to say, a pop classic)
~I need a Dr - Eminem, ft Dr Dre and Skylar Grey
This is such a underrated song. You have to really know your Dre and Em history to catch everything being said (which I won’t go into here) Brilliant tune and my fave they both worked on together that decade.
~Animal- Neon Trees
Really catchy little number that I enjoyed from first hearing.
~Look at me now - Chris Brown ft Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes
Busta Rhymes rap, that is all!
~Moves like Jagger - Maroon 5, Christina Aguilera
A great sing a long featuring two artists I’m not mad about really so a surprise like from me.
~ In the heat of the moment - Noah Gallagher’s High Flying Birds
What a tune, completely missed this first time around heard on a tv show recently checked it was this decade and then added it right on the list. Banger.
~Summertime Sadness AND ~Love - Lana Del Ray

2 for 1. When Summertime Sadness came out I was mesmerised by Lana’s voice had never heard anything like it before. Safe to say she is my artist of the decade but haven’t raided this count down with all her music. A couple here and a couple of my absolute faves in my ultimate top 25. Love was very heard to keep out of my top 25.
~Stronger (What doesn’t kill you) - Kelly Clarkson
Come on now, if you haven’t belted this one out the top of your lungs at least once I don’t know what you’ve been doing the last ten years.
~Somebody that I used to know - Goyte ft Kimbra
Went thru moments of really liking this song then it really irritating me (played on radio A LOT), thankfully years later the hype has died so I can appreciate it once more.
Midnight City- M83
This is not really my sort of music at all ,so much so I’m not even sure how to describe it. Has a 80’s feel which I love. Just love the infusion of synths and instrumental. Plus the singer has a very calm melodic voice. Great track.
~T.H.E - Will.I.Am ft Mick Jagger and Jennifer Lopez
Absolutely love this song so catchy very Fergie era BEP sounding, with a great guest solo from Mick Jagger.
~212 - Azealia Banks (not much to add on this, banger!)
~Too Close - Alex Close
If you don’t recognise this song from title you will once you hear it, such a forgotten gem.
~Picking up the Pieces - Paloma Faith
Another unique voice that def makes my top ten newly discovered artists this decade is Paloma Faith, her cover of Mama Cass’s Make your own kind of music also deserves a strong mention. Also not related to the music but Paloma is mad as a box of frogs in real life which I love.
~Bangarang- Skrillex
Yeah you’re not leaving alive from this post without a Skrillex nod I’m afraid, not a big dubstep fan but jumped aboard the band wagon when it was big for five minutes, this songs only thing that made it back with me thou.
~Hall of Fame - The Script ft Will.I.Am
First let’s clear this up I’m not a massive Will.I.Am fan or anything, he was just in EVERYTHING for the first few years of the 10’s. It’s a great song regardless.
~Harder then You think - Public Enemy (What a track, can’t say much more, banger.)
~Locked out of Heaven- Bruno Mars
Bruno Mars had some amazing tracks his debut album Doo Wops and Hooligans featured some brilliant tunes which sadly I just didn’t have space for in this countdown, Grenade, lazy song , Just the way you are, but I’m showing some love to Unorthodox Jukebox here and it’s best track giving Bruno Mars a edgier new vibe.
~Chocolate- 1975
Not my sort of music usually but really enjoyed this laid back rock number,
~Get Lucky - Daft Punk ft Pharrell Williams
Disco is back! Or is was in 2013 when this tune came out, one of the biggest selling singles worldwide in the 2010’s so not much more detail needed on its inclusion.
~Let her Go- Passenger
Nice little number, always liked this one, never really got into there other stuff but had to give this a shout out.
~Can’t hold us - Macklemore ft Ryan Lewis
The Heist is one of my fave albums from the last decade features some great tracks, same love and Thrift Shop get a shout out but this track was my fave, uplifting and full of energy.
~La La La - Naughty Boy feat Sam Smith
This was Sam Smith’s big feature hit before they became the successful solo artist they are now. Great track very different to the music Sam does now.
~Work Bitch - Britney Spears
Don’t roll your eyes! This is a banger, now get to work bitch!
~Rap God - Eminem

For Eminem’s big solo feature on this countdown it was between this, The Ringer or Not afraid. You may of guessed I’m a Eminem fan and have tried to keep his entries down but one does not simply do a music countdown and not include Rap God.
~Of the Night - Bastille
Really like this band they have some great hits, Pompeii is another great song of theirs that I didn’t have space to include. I went for this eerie cover version of the Corona 90’s dance classic as my pick.
~Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus (Leave me alone it’s a good song ok 😂)
~Riptide- Vance Joy
A little hidden gem I’d forgotten about until I put this list together.
~Who did that to you? - John Legend
Was going to obviously include All of me in this spot but then I remembered this absolute hit from Django unchained which sneaks in and takes the spot. Both great songs thou.
~Nobody to Love - Sigma (Great little dance track not much to add)
~ When the Party’s Over - Billy Eilish

Yes I’m a 35 year old Billy Eilish fan ok leave me alone lol. Seriously thou this girl is super talented and she’s up there in my fave artists of the decade. There will be more of her in my top 25 but this haunting track deserves a mention.
~Turn down for What - DJ Snake ft Lil Jon
It’s Lil Jon yelling really load of course it’s a banger. Also worth mentioning Ice T did a awesome Rap rock version of this song and it’s amazing!
~Problem- Ariana Grane ft Iggy Azalea
Those saxophone’s thou! Groovy little number no explanation needed.
~Chandelier- Sia
Such a power anthem, I came out as trans in 2014 so this song holds a lot of personal meaning with me but regardless is a great song anyway.
~Thinking Out Load - Ed Sheeran
I’m not the biggest Ed Sheeran fan ,take him or most often leave him ,but did like this sweet ballad. Nothing against his voice it’s his songs that don’t often do it for me but this was great.
~Good Kisser- Usher
Never been huge Usher fan ,liked his earlier stuff, confessions and all that. This was a surprise jazzy bluesy type number thou that I really enjoyed.
~Rude- Magic (A catchy sing along tune)
~Zombie - Jamie T
This guy was one of my fave artists of the 00’s, and thou his newest stuff imo doesn’t compare to his older this was still a tune.
~I - Kendrick Lemar
This is actually best when played after the song ‘U’ , the latter being a self hating song ‘loving you Is complicated’ vs I’s ‘I love myself’ different ends of the spectrum I just included ‘I’as you can enjoy that one on its own but to get the best out of that track I highly recommend listening to U first.
~See you again- Wiz Khalifa ft Charlie Puth
A sad song given it’s a tribute to Paul Walker who died in a car accident. Was overplayed a lot at the time but stands strong several years later.
~Dark Times - The Weeked an Ed Sheeran
What a track, their voices mesh perfectly together in this somber number.
~ Trouble - Iggy Azalea ft Jennifer Hudson (Banger)
~Hotline Bling - Drake
So many Drake songs I could of included, (he will appear again in the top 25) gods plan, headlines, in my feelings, nice for what, all absolutely great tracks but I had to go for my personal fave out of the bunch.
~You don’t own me - Grace ft G-Easy
This may be an odd one to some but I’ve always loved the original by Lesley Gore and this is a amazing cover. Grace has a lovely voice (and there is a non rap version if you’re so inclined) Love a good cover version and this is a awesome cover version.
~Side to Side - Ariana Grande ft Nicki Minaj
Hmm guess I’m a Ariana Grande fan, who knew. A cheeky little number and the first appearance in this countdown of a certain fave rapper of mine.
~Panda - Desiigner (another one where there’s not much I need to add, great tune)
~Dancing on my own - Robyn OR Callum Scott
Take your pick the Robyn original or the Callum Scott cover version, both stand alone great tracks, the original more a melancholy dance track the cover a somber ballad. Both brilliant.
~Alarm - Anne-Marie
A nice little pop tune, really like her voice
~Rockabye- Clean Bandit ft Anne-Marie and Sean Paul
Speaking of Anne-Marie, another great pop track. Super catchy sing along. Sean Paul can be hit or miss for me but works well with this track.
~Human - Rag N Bone Man
This is another one there’s not much I can add this guy’s voice is amazing. Brilliant song particularly love the chains you can hear rattling throughout (reminds me of Johnny Cash’s ‘Ain’t no grave’)
~Black Beatles - Rae Stremmurd ft Gucci Mane
Yep that’s some mumble rap to add to the list (told you my music taste was varied) As a whole I don’t love mumble rap but there’s some stand out tracks including this one.
~Thunder- Imagine Dragons
One of my favourite bands from the last decade, like most there stuff. This song has a great song along chorus. Really catchy track.
~New Rules And IDGAF - Dua Lipa
Honestly couldn’t pick from the two really like them both equally. So you get a double. Catchy pop tracks.
~Sorry not Sorry - Demi Lovato
It was between this or Sober (another great Demi track) but ultimately went with the more upbeat pop number.
~Havana - Camila Cabelllo ft Young Thug (A nice chilled Latino style track.)
~Perfect - Ed Sheeran
A beautiful song by Ed Sheeran,other then ‘sing’ and the previous mentions I’m not really into his stuff but this is lovely track.
~Feel it Still - Portugal the Man
Really catchy song can’t help but tap your toes along to it.
~False Alarm- The Weekend
This was something different from the Weekend, really enjoy this song, Weekend is one of my other fave artists to come out the 2010’s.
~Sanctify — Years and years
Wasn’t keen on there earlier dance stuff but when they found there sound I really enjoyed them.
~This is America- Childish Gambino
Great as this song is you really need to watch the music video as well for the song to have its full impact. Love Childish Gambino could of put several of his songs in this list, excited for future music from this guy.
~Solo - Clean Bandit ft Demi Lovato
A cheeky little pop number you can’t help but sing along to.
~Shotgun - George Ezra
One of those artists I can’t decide if I’m into or not, like one song then not keen on the next, it’s strange, but no denying this is a great song.
~Lucid Dreams - Juice WRLD (RIP)

First off Rest in peace Juice, recently died at 21, very sad. The guy was super talented and was looking forward to his future stuff. Could of picked a few tracks but this was the first song I heard of his so that’s got to be my shout out.
~Only You - Cheat Codes ft Little Mix
Although I don’t mind Little Mix this is there only entry on my list. A nice catchy sing along with a dance beat.
~Lost Without You - Freya Ridings
This almost made it into my top 25, just couldn’t find a space for it. Haunting, melodic song with Freya’s stunning vocals. Don’t play this one after a break up or a death.
~Nothing Breaks like a heart- Mark Ronson ft Miley Cyrus
~Someone you loved - Lewis Capaldi
Think this guys going to be another Ed Sheeran for me, meh most the time with the occasional great song. This one no exception.
~Shut Down - Skepta
With lyrics like ‘Ring ring pussy, it’s shut down’ how can it not be a banger 😂 Not the best song in the world I admit but good fun.
~As we enter- Nas and Damian Marley
Words can’t express how much Iove this track, such a hidden gem. A reggae- rap blend of uplifting brilliance. Great gym playlist track.
~Better Now - Post Malone
Another artist I enjoy on occasion. This is my favourite of Malone’s songs so far.
~Bad at Love - Halsey (another great pop track)
~Bitch Don’t kill my vibe- Kendrick Lamar
Could of picked a number of Kendrick tracks King Kunta, DNA, M.a.a.a.d City, If these walls could talk, just to name a few but I’ll go with the first Kendrick track I heard and loved.
~Heartbeat - Childish Gambino
So gutted I couldn’t find a spot for this banger in my 25 but I had to include it on its own. Unless you’re a CG fan it’s unlikely you’ve heard it. Highly recommended a listen. I can’t even really describe it.
~No role Models- J. Cole
A anthem with a similar feel to Keep your head up by 2pac, a sad song somewhat but with a more upbeat tempo. My personal fave J. Cole song.
~Power - Kanye West
Wow our first Kanye track. I like Kanye ,prefer his older stuff. My dark twisted fantasy was the last album of his I really liked. This was a absolute monster of a tune. Also really liked the song Runaway from the same album. Both have great intros.
~Antidote- Travis Scott
~ No Sleep- Wiz Khalifa
Super catchy song, very anthem sounding.
~Young, Wild and Free - Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa and Bruno Mars
Another catchy tune, powerhouse of a team up.

Absolute banger double up from the king and queen of rap. Also a version she did with Lil Wayne which was very good but the Eminem version wins for me. Also will take the opportunity to give the Lil Wayne and Nicki song ‘knockout’ a shoutout.
~Blazin’- Nicki Minaj ft Kanye west
Another great Nicki Minaj track of the brilliant Pink Friday album. I know some of her more recent stuff hasn’t been great but she came out the gates strong in 2010.

Last Nicki Minaj track I promise, could of picked this or starships as love them both equally.
~Trap Queen- Fetty Wap
Can’t lie this is something I never thought I’d like but the more I heard it the more I liked it.

Wow maybe the most powerful song on this whole list. Nothing I explain can do it justice you have to give it a listen yourself (with the video)

Boom, rap to rock just like that. I love Marilyn Manson covers, in the 00’s it was Tainted Love but this time around its this classic from The Lost Boys soundtrack. Creepy song but kinda perfect for Manson.

Have to include some Beyoncé before this ends it’s the law. This was my favourite of hers.

Not the biggest Adele fan but she has a few songs I enjoy, set fire to the rain and someone like you also good songs.

This song featured in a Assassins creed game trailer (I forget which game) and I searched for it straight away, found it, fell in love, the rest is history. Great beat and vocals.
~Game Over - Tinchy Stryder, Tinie Tempah, Professor Green, Giggs, Devlin, Example, Chip
Wow with that line up it was always going to be a banger. This might be my fave beat ever! Such a tune featuring Rap and grime mvp’s from the UK.
~Gods and Monsters- Lana Del Ray
I know I said in no order but this might be my very favourite song from the last ten years. It’s not even regarded as Lana’s best but I just love everything about it, lyrics, melody and vocals. Perfect song.

Another melodic masterpiece from Lana Del Ray.
~Bad Girls - M.I.A
Yeah I’m a dude it’s weird this song gets me pumped seriously thou such a catchy song.

Drake at his best imo, great beat, delivery and lyrics. My fave Drake song.

Powerful song with a amazing beat, powerful lyrics, great gym song to get you pumped.

You might have guessed by now I like a catchy sing along song with a pumping beat and somber tone. Check.

Her voice in this is something else. I said it before Paloma Faith is so underrated.

Ok sorry Lana Del Ray but I retract your number one spot for this one. Thought it was Macy Grey or the Delfonics singing when I first heard it then discovered who it was. This has a 70’s soul feel. It’s hard to explain ,if you’ve never heard it give it a listen I’m sure you’ll love it.
~Bad Guy - Billy Eilish
Such a catchy tune, the song that introduced me to her music. Great little dance/pop hit. Fun and a bit freaky. Duh!
~Bury a Friend- Billy Eilish
The way Billy Eilish’s mind works amazes me, how she sees the lyrics, the music and video all as one package. She’s extremely talented and look forward to her taking up most the spots on my 2020’s best of list.
~I miss the misery- Halestorm
Great rock hit, has a very 80’s feel. Lead singer has a amazing voice.
~Sweet but Psycho - Ava Max
Maybe my favourite pure manufactured pop hit of the decade, any female pop star could churn this out and it would do well. Hate to love it.
~Homicide - Logic feat Eminem
If you don’t like rap you won’t get it, if you do, you know where I’m at.
~Stronger then Ever - Raleigh Ritchie
Otherwise known as Grey Worm in Game of Thrones, this guy can hold a tune. Great uplifting track.
~Speedom- Tech N9nne, Eminem
Another great Eminem feature hit. Absolute masterpiece of a record.
~I need - Maverick Sabre
Nice somber melodic song, this guys super talented.
~Cookie Thumper - Die Antwoord
The South African rap rave group strikes again, this one is pretty much a Yolande solo, the beat is insane and thou half of it is in said/sung in Africans it’s still my fave DA song.
~Monster- Kanye West, Jay Z, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross, Bon Ivor
The title of this track doesn’t lie, beast of a track, arguably Nicki Minaj’s best guest verse ever (‘Where them girls at’ deserves a mention for sure) It’s in all my rap playlists, amazing song.

Throwback: Usher- U Don't Have To Call

Usher's "U Don't Have To Call" embraced the feelings of relationship disappointment with a pep that reclaimed freedom in being single. Pharrell and Chad Hugo wrote the song as The Neptunes for Michael Jackson but Usher recorded it after Jackson's management declined it. Usher had much success with "U Don't Have To Call" winning another Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance and it charted well in the United States and the UK.
It was ironic that Usher recorded the song despite the original intentions because he was considered Jackson's entertainment heir. Usher's 8701 album was another major achievement in asserting his place as the biggest male R&B star at the time only second to R.Kelly. He won several awards for 8701 including Soul Train, Billboard and BET distinctions. Some of his greatest singles ("U Got It Bad" "U Remind Me") were on 8701 and its triple platinum status within six months led to it becoming the 18th best-selling album of the year. The video is seen as a reflection of 2001 but also futuristic because Usher has a Facetime-like phonecall with Diddy long before the technology was available. "U Don't Have To Call" stands as one of Usher's best moments and it spread the influence of The Neptunes.  
In 2019, Usher posted videos to his Instagram account indicating that he was working with Jermaine Dupri on Confessions 2.

I was swamped with various obligations all throughout #JurassicJune. So while I did celebrate by re-reading both Michael Crichton novels and re-watching all the previous Jurassic films and attending the premier of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom - I wasn’t able to blog about it. Now #JurassicJune has come and gone and we are in #Kaijuly. But I have one post that I really wanted to make that I think appropriately touches on both month’s themes...
Jurassic Park as Monster Movie
“Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park is nothing more – and nothing less – than the world’s most extravagant Godzilla movie.”
So said film critic David Ansen in his 1993 Newsweek review of the first Jurassic movie. Today this may sound like a rather dismissive assessment of a film which has come to be regarded as one of greatest sci-fi movies ever made. But rather than the snarky opinion of a single critic I find Ansen’s appraisal to be a rather frank and refreshing summation of what Jurassic Park actually is. A high tech monster movie.
Today everyone who was of the right age in 1993 agrees that Jurassic Park is a great movie. But curiously when you ask them “Why?” many have trouble explaining exactly what it is that made the film so great. This goes for professional film critics as well as self-proclaimed fans. Usually people put in this corner tend to fall back on vague adjectives claiming that Jurassic Park was great because it invoked a sense of “awe and wonderment,” a somewhat ironic claim since back in ‘93 legendary film critic Roger Ebert argued that it was exactly these qualities which Jurassic Park lacked... along with decently realized human characters and an interesting story. Both of which further adds to the amusement since in recent years a number of videos have started to pop-up on YouTube (see: here, here & here) made by people attempting to elucidate Jurassic Park’s greatness by examining its themes and characters. Much of the content of these videos is simply a rehash of observations made about Jurassic Park by academics over the last 25-years and deals with how the movie touches upon ideas regarding the perils of scientific advancement while advocating an agenda of reproductive futurism via its characters. See paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould’s essay “Dinomania” and sociologist John O’Neill’s essay “Dinosaurs-R-Us” as well as W.J.T. Mitchell’s The Last Dinosaur Book (U. of Chicago Press, 1998) and Joshua Bellin’s Framing Monsters (S. IL U. Press, 2005) for an example of some of this scholarship. Furthermore, what these YouTube commentators seem to have missed, which the actual scholars did not, is that these elements – the themes of technophobia and the importance of marriage and children – are among the most hackneyed and clichéd aspects of Jurassic Park, not to mention utterly retrograde in their outlook. These elements are certainly not what made Jurassic Park great or what has allowed it to endure for 25-years.
So what does make Jurassic Park great? For critics like Ansen and Ebert the answer, back in 1993, was obvious. The special-effects of course! “You want great dinosaurs, you got great dinosaurs,” wrote Ebert, “[and] because the movie delivers on the bottom line, I'm giving it three stars.” Jurassic Park spent nearly three years in special-effects research and development and combined the artistic might of stop-motion maven Phil Tippett, animatronics maestro Stan Winston and the cutting edge CGI work of Dennis Murren and ILM studios to usher in nothing less than a revolution in special-effects technology. Back in 1993 everyone who saw Jurassic Park left the theater believing – despite their better judgment – that they had seen real dinosaurs. And because of its special-effects after Jurassic Park the world of cinema has, quite literally, never been the same.
Yet as sci-fi author John Scalzi notes in his surprisingly provocative book The Rough Guide to Sci-Fi Movies (Rough Guides, 2005), the fact that Jurassic Park – which Scalzi counts as being among the then 50 most important sci-fi films ever made –  is great precisely because of its groundbreaking special-effects work has often led to the film being severely underappreciated. Again this may sound odd in 2018 when everyone is celebrating the 25th-Anniversary of Jurassic Park and the fifth film in the franchise – Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – just finished its second week as the Number 1 movie in America, but it’s important to remember that Scalzi was writing this in 2005 when the Jurassic Park brand was effectively dead in the water and Universal was seriously considering rebooting the franchise as something approaching a live-action adaptation of the cheesy 90s cartoon Extreme Dinosaurs.
Today Jurassic Park has regained its cultural capital in large part due to the phenomenal box office success of 2015’s Jurassic World - which as horror author and film critic Kim Newman observed succeeded in being the first film in the series to bring a definite “kaiju feel” to the franchise - but also because of the wave of 80s and 90s nostalgia currently surging through American popular-culture. But this same nostalgia has now caused Jurassic Park to be put on a pedestal, elevated far above its station to such an extent that many people now become nervous when you point out that they are venerating what is essentially a glitzy Godzilla flick. And make no mistake this is exactly what Jurassic Park is. In Don Shay and Jody Duncan’s highly recommended book The Making of Jurassic Park (Ballantine Books, 1993), Spielberg talks about what his seminal cinematic influences were when filming Jurassic Park. Among the foremost were a number of films which I have blogged about here including the original KING KONG (1933), THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS (1954), GORGO (1961) and of course GODZILLA (1954) which Spielberg singles out as “the most masterful of all dinosaur movies because it made you believe it was really happening.” Other obvious influences, as noted by author Mark Berry in his The Dinosaur Filmography (McFarland, 2005), are the movies DINOSAURUS! (1960) and THE VALLEY OF GWANGI (1969). Jurassic Park – depending on your point of view – may have better special-effects than all of these films, but it is certainly not any better or more sophisticated than any of these films. In many ways, what Jurassic Park really is is a culmination of these films. The ultimate pop-culture dinosaur potpourri.
Currently there seems to be a great deal of monster-movie-denial going around with regards to Jurassic Park for a variety of different reasons. In fact, the only time people seem to want to mention the phrase “monster movie” in conjunction with Jurassic Park is when talking about the sequels and here the association is always negative. As in: ‘Jurassic Park was a great movie, but the sequels are just a bunch of dumb monster movies.’ I happen to like all of the Jurassic sequels to a greater or lesser extent, even the most recent film – Fallen Kingdom – which I nevertheless do acknowledge as being the most seriously flawed movie in the franchise to date. (If you want to hear my opinion of each film I suggest popping over to The Film Find podcast where I recently recorded an episode with regular host Adam Portrais on the entire Jurassic franchise.)
And while I would never insist that everyone who likes Jurassic Park also has to like the sequels I do expect that when someone is going to say a film is bad that they at least lay out a series of well thought out arguments about why they feel that way. And in this case saying that the Jurassic Park sequels are bad because they are “monster movies” when the original film wasn’t simply doesn’t count as a valid argument. I’m not sure how you prove to someone that Jurassic Park is a monster movie - really seems self-evident to me - but in the following series of posts I’m going to endeavor to demonstrate some of the ways that Spielberg used Jurassic Park to pay homage to the dino-monster movies of yesteryear and by doing so firmly seated his film as existing within that same tradition of fantastic film-making.

Michael Eugene Archer (born February 11, 1974), better known by his stage name D'Angelo (pronounced dee-Angelo), is an American, Grammy Award winning R&B and Neo soul singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. Born in Richmond, Virginia, the son of a Pentecostal minister, he began teaching himself piano as a very young child, and at age 18 he won the amateur talent competition at Harlem's Apollo Theater three weeks in a row. After briefly being a member of a hip-hop group called I.D.U., his first major success came in 1994 as the co-writer and co-producer of "U Will Know".
His debut solo album, Brown Sugar, released in July 1995, received rave reviews and sold over two million copies. Along with artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, and collaborator Angie Stone, D'Angelo became part of the Neo soul movement. Following this D'Angelo went on a hiatus before releasing Voodoo in January 2000, which debuted at number one. Its lead single "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," was a smash on the R&B charts and won a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal; likewise, Voodoo won for Best R&B Album.
Following the release of "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," D'Angelo became more uncomfortable with his growing status as a sex symbol. This was followed by numerous personal struggles including alcoholism, and a fourteen-year musical hiatus. D'Angelo released his third studio album, Black Messiah, in December 2014, although it was originally set for release in 2015; the album was met with critical acclaim and fared well on music charts, peaking at number five on the US Billboard 200.
Early life
D'Angelo was born Michael Eugene Archer, in Richmond, Virginia on February 11, 1974, to a Pentecostal preacher father. He was raised in an entirely Pentecostal family. Archer's musical talents were discovered very early on. At 3, he was spotted by his 10-year-old brother Luther, playing the house piano. Following the formation of his native-Richmond, Virginia musical group, Michael Archer and Precise, and its success on the Amateur Night competition at Harlem, New York's Apollo Theater in 1991, the 18-year-old singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist dropped out of school and moved to New York City, as an attempt to develop his music career. The group previously enjoyed some notice in Richmond, evenly dividing their repertoire between soul covers and originals, while D'Angelo accumulated compositions of his own and developed his songwriting skills. The group's turnout on Amateur Night resulted in three consecutive wins and cash prize, after which, upon returning home to Richmond, D'Angelo was inspired to produce an album and began composing material, after a brief tenure as a member of the hip hop group I.D.U. (Intelligent, Deadly but Unique).
Career
1991–1995: Brown Sugar
D'Angelo signed a publishing deal with EMI Music in 1991 after catching the attention of record executives through a demo tape, which was originally by the group. After an impressive audition for EMI execs, a three-hour impromptu piano recital, D'Angelo was signed to a recording contract in 1993. A&R-man Gary Harris was primarily responsible for his signing, while manager Kedar Massenburg helped negotiate the contract as well. Massenburg became D'Angelo's manager after hearing of him through "the buzz on the streets". He had previously managed hip hop group Stetsasonic and formed the artist management-firm Kedar Entertainment in 1991, which he diversified into production, music publishing and publicity.
In 1994, his first significant success came in the form of the hit single "U Will Know". D'Angelo co-wrote and co-produced the song for the all-male R&B supergroup Black Men United, which featured R&B singers such as Brian McKnight, Usher, R. Kelly, Boyz II Men, Raphael Saadiq and Gerald Levert. D'Angelo composed the music for "U Will Know", while his brother, Luther Archer, wrote the lyrics. Originally featured on the soundtrack to the film Jason's Lyric (1994), the single peaked at number 5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks and at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music video for "U Will Know" featured D'Angelo as the group's choir director; he reprised the role for the live performance of the song at the Soul Train Music Awards. That same year, he wrote and produced the song "Overjoyed" for the Boys Choir of Harlem, which appeared on their studio album The Sound of Hope (1994). The success of "U Will Know" helped build the buzz surrounding D'Angelo, which was followed by a number of highly promoted showcases, and added to the buzz among music industry insiders.
Brown Sugar was released in June 1995. Although sales were sluggish at first, the album was eventually a hit. The album debuted at number six on the US Billboard Top R&B Albums chart in the week of July 22, 1995. It ultimately peaked at number four in the week of February 24, 1996, and spent a total of 54 weeks on the chart. Brown Sugar also spent 65 weeks on the Billboard 200 and peaked at number 22 on the chart. It sold 300,000 copies within its two months of release. The album had been selling 35,000 to 40,000 copies a week through to November 1995, and by January 1996, it had sold 400,000 copies. With the help of its four singles, including the gold-selling Billboard Hot 100 hit "Lady" and R&B top-ten singles "Brown Sugar" and "Cruisin", the album reached sales of 500,000 copies in the United States by October 1995. On February 7, 1996, it was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, following shipments in excess of one million copies in the U.S. The album was certified gold in Canada on May 9, 2000. Its total sales have been estimated within the range of 1.5 million to over two million copies.
1996–2000: Sabbatical period and Voodoo
Following the success of his debut album Brown Sugar (1995), D'Angelo went into a four and a half year absence from the music scene and releasing solo work. After spending two years on tour promoting Brown Sugar, D'Angelo found himself stuck with writer's block. On the setback, D'Angelo later stated "The thing about writer's block is that you want to write so fucking bad, [but] the songs don't come out that way. They come from life. So you've got to live to write." During his sabbatical period, he generally released cover versions and remakes, including a cover-collaboration with Erykah Badu of the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell duet song "Your Precious Love" for the soundtrack to High School High (1996). D'Angelo also covered Prince's "She's Always in My Hair" for the Scream 2 soundtrack (1997), as well as the Ohio Players' "Heaven Must Be Like This" for the Down in the Delta soundtrack (1998). He also appeared on a duet, "Nothing Even Matters", with Lauryn Hill for her debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998). He also spent the time lifting weights, smoking weed, and making music.
The much-delayed follow-up to Brown Sugar, Voodoo, was finally released in 2000 on Virgin Records after the EMI Records Group was absorbed by the former label. Voodoo received rave reviews from contemporary music critics. who dubbed it a "masterpiece" and D'Angelo's greatest work. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 320,000 copies in its first week. It entered the Billboard 200 on February 12, 2000 and remained on the chart for 33 consecutive weeks. As of 2005, the album has sold over 1.7 million copies in the US, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In 2001, Voodoo won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 43rd Grammy Awards, which was awarded to D'Angelo and recording engineer Russell Elevado.
Its first two singles, "Devil's Pie" and "Left & Right", peaked at number 69 and number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The latter was commercially aimed at R&B and hip hop-oriented radio stations due to the prominence of rappers Redman and Method Man on the track. According to Rich Ford, Jr., producer of the "Left & Right" music video, both the single and the video went commercially unnoticed due to MTV's refusal to place the song's video in rotation, serving as punishment for missing the deadline for its initial premiere. The fifth single "Feel Like Makin' Love" was less successful, reaching number 109 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks. "Send It On", the album's fourth single, achieved moderate chart success, peaking at number 33 on Billboard's Pop Singles chart. The album's third single, "Untitled (How Does It Feel)", became its greatest chart success, peaking at number 25 on the Hot 100 Singles and at number two on the R&B Singles chart. Its infamous music video helped in boosting the song's appeal, as well as D'Angelo's. Billboard wrote of the video, "It's pure sexuality. D'Angelo, muscularly cut and glistening, is shot from the hips up, naked, with just enough shown to prompt a slow burning desire in most any woman who sees it. The video alone could make the song one of the biggest of the coming year". It earned three nominations for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year, Best R&B Video, and Best Male Video.
2001–2013: Second sabbatical, struggles and delayed album
Towards the end of his worldwide tour in support of the album that same year, D'Angelo's personal issues had worsened, affecting performances. He became more conscious of and uncomfortable with his status as a sex symbol, and after the tour D'Angelo returned to his home in Richmond, Virginia, disappearing from the public eye. Several of D'Angelo's peers and affiliates have noted the commercial impact of the "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" music video and The Voodoo Tour as contributing factors to D'Angelo's period of absence from the music scene. His former music manager, Dominique Trenier, explained his disappointment in the music video's impact in a 2008 interview for Spin magazine. Trenier was quoted as saying that "to this day, in the general populace's memory, he's the naked dude".
According to tour manager Alan Leeds, the experience "took away his confidence, because he's not convinced why any given fan is supporting him." Following the suicide of his close friend, MTV-affiliate Fred Jordan, in April 2001, he started to develop a drinking problem. As his alcoholism escalated, plans for a live album and a Soultronics studio effort, both originally set for after the tour, were scrapped, and impatient Virgin executives cut off funding for the expected 2004 solo album.
By 2005, D'Angelo's girlfriend had left him, his attorney had become displeased with him, and most of his family was not in touch with him. He also parted ways with manager Dominique Trenier and tour manager Alan Leeds. After a car accident and an arrest on DUI and marijuana possession charges, D'Angelo left Virgin Records in 2005 and checked into the Crossroads Centre rehabilitation clinic in Antigua. In 2005, his recording contract was acquired by J Records, following rumors of D'Angelo signing to Bad Boy Records. Despite no solo output, D'Angelo collaborated with some R&B and hip hop artists during this period between albums, appearing on albums such as J Dilla's The Shining (2006), Snoop Dogg's Tha Blue Carpet Treatment (2006), Common's Finding Forever (2007), and Q-Tip's The Renaissance (2008).
D'Angelo's subsequent solo work was extensively delayed. Production for a full-length follow-up to Voodoo was stagnant, as he was working on and off mostly by himself during 2002. D'Angelo attempted to play every instrument for the project, striving for complete creative control similar to that of Prince. Russell Elevado described the resulting material as "Parliament/Funkadelic meets the Beatles meets Prince, and the whole time there's this Jimi Hendrix energy". However, those who previewed its songs found it to be unfinished. In the years that followed, D'Angelo's personal problems worsened, descending to drug and alcohol addiction. In January 2005 he was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine. Various mugshots began circulating around the time, showing the singer looking overweight and unhealthy, in stark contrast to the muscular D'Angelo seen in promotion for Voodoo. In September 2005, a week after being sentenced on the drug charges, he was involved in a car accident, and was rumoured to be critically injured. However, a week after the crash a statement was issued by D'Angelo's attorney stating that he was fine continuing to say "He is anxious to finish the recording of his soul masterpiece that the world has patiently awaited.
No more was revealed on the new album until 2007, when Questlove leaked an unfinished track on Triple J Radio in Australia. Entitled "Really Love", the track was an acoustic flavored jam with a laid back swing feel. The leak apparently soured relations between the two. D'Angelo released a CD/DVD compilation album entitled The Best So Far…, first released on June 24, 2008 on Virgin Records. The compilation features songs from his two previous studio albums, Brown Sugar and Voodoo, as well as rarities and a second disc, a DVD of previously unreleased videos. Around the same time, the compilation was released digitally without the Erykah Badu and Raphael Saddiq featured songs, under the title Ultimate D'Angelo.
In late November 2011, D'Angelo announced a series of 2012 European tour dates. The tour kicked off January 26 in Stockholm, Sweden with its final show on February 10. The tour featured a selection of hits from his two previous albums and songs from his upcoming album, which was close to completion. He premièred 4 new songs: "Sugah Daddy", "Ain't That Easy", "Another Life" and "The Charade" which were well received. On June 9, 2012, he joined Roots drummer ?uestlove for the annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival's Superjam. Although he didn't play any of his original material, this marked the first time in nearly 12 years that he performed on stage in the US. On September 1, 2012, D'Angelo performed at Jay-Z's Made In America festival where he again performed the new songs, "The Charade" and "Sugah Daddy". On October 7, RCA Music Group announced that it was disbanding J Records, Arista Records, and Jive Records. With the shutdown, D'Angelo (and all other artists previously signed to those labels) would release his future material on RCA Records.
2014–present: Black Messiah
D'Angelo released his third studio album, Black Messiah in December 2014, D'Angelo originally wanted to release Black Messiah in 2015, but the controversial decisions in the Ferguson and Eric Garner cases inspired him to release it earlier. On December 12, 2014, Kevin Liles, D'Angelo's manager, shared a 15-second teaser of the album on YouTube. Two days later, the track "Sugah Daddy", which had been part of D'Angelo's set list since 2012, premiered at 3am EST and 1,000 downloads were available on Red Bull's 20 Before 15 website. After an exclusive listening party in New York, Black Messiah was released digitally on December 15 through iTunes, Google Play Music, and Spotify. The album's unexpected release was compared to Beyoncé's self-titled release in 2013. On January 13, 2015, "Really Love" was released to urban adult contemporary radio in the US.
The album was met with universal acclaim from critics and it currently has a 95/100 mean score on review aggregator Metacritic. In its first week of release, Black Messiah debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 and sold 117,000 copies in the United States. In its second week, the album dropped to number twenty five on the chart and sold another 40,254 copies. In the United Kingdom, it debuted at number 47 on the UK Albums Chart with first-week sales of 7,423 copies. D'Angelo is supporting Black Messiah with a tour called The Second Coming. His band, The Vanguard, includes drummer Chris Dave, bassist Pino Palladino, guitarists Jesse Johnson and Isaiah Sharkey, vocalists Kendra Foster, Jermaine Holmes, and Charles "Redd" Middleton, and keyboardist Cleo "Pookie" Sample. The European leg commenced in Zurich on February 11, 2015, and concluded in Brussels on March 7.
In June 2015, D'Angelo confirmed to Rolling Stone that he was working on more material for a new album, calling it "a companion piece" to Black Messiah. In 2016 Black Messiah won Best R&B Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards as well as Best R&B Song for "Really Love" which also was nominated for Record of the Year. Black Messiah, Beyoncé's self-titled (2013), Run the Jewels' Run the Jewels 2 (2014) and Kendrick Lamar's, To Pimp a Butterfly (2015), were noted as laying the groundwork down for the political charged releases that happened in 2016, which included Anti, by Rihanna, Kanye West's The Life of Pablo, and Beyonce's "Formation".
D'Angelo performed Prince's "Sometimes it Snows in April" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in April 2016 accompanied by Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum as a tribute to the late musician, appearing 'overcome with emotion' at the passing of a major influence.
Artistry
In a 1995 interview, he discussed the influence that musician Prince had on his approach to recording his debut album, stating "I was one of those guys who read the album credits and I realized that Prince was a true artist. He wrote, produced, and performed, and that's the way I wanted to do it." According to D'Angelo, the hip hop influence present on the album "came from the Native Tongues movement - Tribe Called Quest, Gangstarr and Main Source." In a February 1999 interview with music journalist Touré, D'Angelo discussed his original inspirations to produce music, stating "The sound and feel of my music are going to be affected by what motivates me to do it". On his visit to South Carolina, D'Angelo stated that he "went through this runnel, through gospel, blues, and a lot of old soul, old James Brown, early, early Sly and the Family Stone, and a lot of Jimi Hendrix", and "I learned a lot about music, myself, and where I want to go musically". In the same interview, he cited the deaths of rappers Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. as having a great effect on him during the period. During the production of his second studio album D'Angelo recorded numerous hours of unreleased, original material, as well as covers of his influencers' material. Collectively referred to by D'Angelo as "yoda", these influencers included soul artist Al Green, funk artist George Clinton, and Afrobeat artist Fela Kuti.

so starting with her parents, where all stories begin, let’s just preface by saying these were awful people. they ran in similar circles during school, a very bad one at that, & fell in love after sharing a joint. in their high daze they saw what their mind was conjuring but not the truth about one another. but for them, it had been enough. thus, their story began. it was a very rocky road but they managed to stay together regardless. the bond they had created blossomed as they partook in illegal activities such as petty theft, vandalism, & it slowly evolved into larger problems. 
after hyeon’s mother, named jung eunbi, stole from her parents for the last time she was kicked out into the street with her boyfriend ( who had also been kicked out ) with no place to go. both dropped out of high school as it wasn’t their “””scene””” & took to the dirty streets of busan trying to turn tricks. they’d do anything they could to get some money to feed their addictions. in the midst of their scrambling for what they deemed as important, they never thought to buy protection. so one fateful night after a good steal, they made love on a dingy couch high as a kite & eunbi got pregnant.
she hid the pregnancy for as long as she could from her boyfriend, he only noticed when there was a rather apparent bump under her baggy clothing. with the weight of the realization they might have to force themselves to become a real family, the couple got hitched & attempted to find real jobs. in some miracle, they managed to find a house to live in & eventually “raise” their child in. 
hyeon was born on the 8th of june, on a dark morning with clouds hanging ove the sky & rain starting to pour. she was premature as her mother did drugs during the pregnancy ( which was really no shocker ) & almost was pronounced a still born before they heard the tiny being crying & gasping for air. her parents had assumed that once she was born, they’d feel that parental love that everyone claimed to have but it never came. they stayed in the hospital a total of two days & hardly let their newborn get the help she needed before they hauled ass out of there. 
the first 3 years of hyeon’s life were better than expected, her parents at least tried to take care of her but once she was able to do everything on her own they left her be to pursue their own happiness. honestly think of matilda but a lot more severe ok
she would often get locked in a closet while there were parties held & her parents were too strung out to remember their child. she could spend days in there before she was released. this was only the beginning.
at 8 years old, her father lost his job ( her mother stayed at home ) due to a random drug test & he of course failed. this triggered her parents to panic as they no longer could supply themselves with their so desired highs. so after a night of scheming, they came up with a plan so sinister not even the devil himself would agree.
random men & women began to arrive to their dingy home as hyeon would be ushered into quiet rooms with them where they would pay to do whatever they pleased with the young girl. this went on for 2 years before hyeon was pulled into the principals office at school with questions about where those bruises on her came from. her mom was picked up for possession & this prompted the police to raid their home to find many illegal substances throughout the place as well as evidence of abuse towards the child.
soon after her parents were placed in prison, hyeon was shipped off to seoul to the biggest orphanage in the country. there she stayed for 4 more years. the time there was quiet, nobody asked her about where she came from & she never spoke about it. in truth, she never knew how to as she was a blank mind essentially. 
luckily when she was 15, after a long & strenuous search, hyeon’s grandparents found her & adopted her into their home in daegu. they were absolutely appalled at this shell of a girl, but could only blame her trauma on their own children. it was here that hyeon was loved for the first time in her life ( & possibly the only time ) & taught how to feel something besids fear. she was still horribly inept at processing emotions or showing them.
two years spent with them & one night as hyeon & her grandfather were sat at the family piano, playing & singing a song as her grandmother recorded them in secret. that same video was sent to an entertainment company without hyeon’s knowledge but was thoroughly surprised & equally as excited when she was recruited. only a measly year in training with her 2 group members before they debuted & they were suddenly the biggest gg in sk.
the group debuted under the name of PTL, hyeon’s stagename was now Tink as she accompanied her members in the ride of a lifetime. they were extremely popular with their girl crush yet enticing vocals with miss tink as the main vocalist & maknae. even so successful as to have a world tour ! the group had their differences, hyeon being the medium for them as the other girls were rather opposing forces. often she was put in the middle of their arguing only to run away when conflict came up. during this time she would write & compose her own songs, bringing a heavy soul feeling to the group with her powerhouse vocals.
with all this being said ( which was a LOT ), there is still more. a year after debut while the group was climbing in popularity, hyeon began receiving texts from an unknown number. she soon found out that the people behind the mask were her parents, somehow having managed to be released from prison & found their new mission in life was to harass their daughter. on an october night, after an argument went down within the dorms between hyeon’s two members, the youngest set out by herself to meet those who hurt her for dinner. 
as expected, it went horribly. at this point in her life, she was extremely impressionable, & witnessed how her eonnie handled things which was with a liquor bottle in hand. so, like an idiot, she went to a club by herself to get fucked up. while sitting at the bar, a random man drugged her drink & took hyeon home with him. the night was a blur but when the young woman woke up she felt familiar bruises & a blanket of rage took over. the man was still passed out next to her.
so as she slipped out of his bed & found the nearest blunt object, hyeon managed to bash his skull in. she blacked out after that only to come to with clean hands & far away from the corpse. this was the reactant to lead her to go blind in rage & come to with blood on her hands. soon enough, she took a liking to the feeling & became two people within one while somehow managing to remain anonymous as a killer ran rampant.
earlier this year, after too much shit going on within the group, ptl disbanded & all went their own ways. which hyeon appreciated. the people she had once called her sisters had become like strangers & only cared about themselves, didn’t have the time to look after their maknae. 
to say that her already pre - existing depression & anxiety sky rocketed would be an understatement. she left music for a while, deciding to stream on twitch & youtube as a gamer. it made her happy for a short time but has been planning on returning to music with hints of a solo debut soon that has fans excited.

Leah Isobel: Justin Bieber's greatest strength as a vocalist is - was - playing very dumb phrases extremely straight, investing them with almost overflowing, doe-eyed emotion. This quality could turn a one-word chorus into poetry, or he could U-turn into knowing comedy when the phrases and ideas got dumb enough. On "Yummy," though, Bieber meets his match in a title phrase that's too winkingly juvenile even for his reformed child-star tenor. More than that, he sounds tired, like he doesn't even want to be playing this game anymore - his high notes have turned nasal and yelpy, his low register more empty air than resonance. I can imagine the Bieber of "Boyfriend" or "Beauty and a Beat" really feasting on this track, but 2020 Bieber needs more than vapid concepts to regurgitate on a semi-trendy beat. Those doe eyes have turned dead. [2]

Though perhaps this is a path to follow. Bieber will already have fans who weren't born before "One Time" (or were babies as of "Baby"), so why not go an eenie meenie bit further and make the video a toy unboxing? Children are the future! Oliver Maier: Justin Bieber spent his teens trying to sound grown-up, then spent his early 20s trying to sound like a teenager. Purpose's singles posited him as a golden-hearted hottie grappling with adolescent naivety, who hurts your feelings or doesn't quite get it but is still trying, dangit. There was naturally a manipulative subtext to that cluelessness, but for whatever reason -- maybe that tension is interesting, maybe the songs were just catchy -- he remained compelling, and still felt out of our league. These days, I guess he's content to sound like nothing whatsoever. "Yummy" surrenders a few too many brain cells both in composition (this doesn't sound like a song anybody cared about writing) and execution (Justin Bieber sounds like the most tediously simpering man on the planet). There are shadows of good melodies here and there, if you're feeling generous, but it is simply too half-formed, and so cutesy and content that it nukes Bieber's sensuality altogether. I can't decide whether to cringe or take a nap. [3]
Will Rivitz: Three points to this as a conceptual exercise -- I didn't think it possible to sanitize "Hotline Bling" even more than the original. That's all it gets. [3]
Kylo Nocom: Awful metaphors and unsexy sex talk as bait for detractors to publicly (and correctly) declare awful. It's the same strategy as "Earth" and as the bizarre lead singles of other stars' comebacks: get the fans liking it, and the haters furious at how stupid it is. What "Yummy" does have is plenty of melodic tricks, and a beat like this would've popped off in 2016. Yet giving this any credit feels like rewarding a transparent cash-in when he's had far more attractive come-ons. [4]
Kayla Beardslee: Obviously "Yummy" isn't good. Obviously I was never personally going to like it. Obviously we as a collective are going to hate it. But what am I actually supposed to do with it? The Justin Bieber hate train has whirred back into full force -- the video is 15% disliked, and articles (plus offhand internet comments) criticizing him, the rollout, and the music are already being pumped out. He took over four years to come back after Purpose, but has been dropping a steady stream of features in the interim: Bieber has simultaneously faded from the public eye as a solo artist and overexposed himself as an inconsistent, practically anonymous guest feature. There's no hype for his return, except among diehard fans who would assemble no matter the timing or quality. It feels like being force fed. And yet, although "Yummy" is a joyless combination of beige and sleaze, I'm still hesitant to gleefully condemn it. As a song, sure, it's unpleasant and Purpose-less and not what he needed to kick off a successful era. But, let's be real, "Yummy" is such a nothing that trashing of the music can easily transfer onto Bieber himself, and so much of the hate is not (for lack of a better term) in good faith. If you're going to criticize Bieber, call him out for things like idolizing Chris Brown and patronizing Hillsong (deciding whether the latter is actually bad is complicated, but it's certainly been a topic of conversation around him). But how many people in a social media crowd are going to provide balanced criticisms of difficult topics like these? Bieber's music has been marketed toward teen girls, he has a pretty voice that some might judge as feminine, he just dyed his hair pink, he's making trendy pop and chasing traditional masculine and commercial markers of success: these are all fodder for cheap shots and knee-jerk hate across a variety of communities. I've seen people (a friend, a relative) react to mentions of Justin Bieber with mild disgust -- literally just his name is a repellent. Of course, Bieber carries himself with a cocky attitude that's easy to hate (probably what happens when you're forced into the ridiculous freedom and unique restrictions of celebrity when you're a naive teenager). Of course, he's built a reputation for acting like a terrible person many times in the past. Of course, Bieber is a straight white man who has a layer of security against harassment that artists like, for example, Lizzo don't have. And yet I constantly remember that Bieber has spoken out about battling depression, and I feel uncomfortable joining the pile-on. And really, what is there to enjoy about trashing him or "Yummy"? The track is bland and unambitious, except for when it's actively repelling ("get litty, babe"; the entire fucking premise of "yummy"). Bieber doesn't even sound like he cares. At first, I thought his team must have chosen a song named "Yummy" as a lead single for the same reason scammers still send Nigerian prince emails: immediately weed out the people who have no patience for it, and focus instead on reaching the sympathetic (his fanbase) and the oblivious (the general public bogeyman that passively consumes hits through playlists). And then I learned that the bridge namedrops Bieber's own house slipper brand, in a dumb, out of touch move that only a rich celebrity would approve of. That single moment makes me think his team is, in fact, desperate enough to coast on soulless music and hope to profit off Bieber's previous reputation and work alone. We're all just tired, aren't we? [1]

Michael Eugene Archer (born February 11, 1974), better known by his stage name D'Angelo (pronounced dee-Angelo), is an American, Grammy Award winning R&B and Neo soul singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer. Born in Richmond, Virginia, the son of a Pentecostal minister, he began teaching himself piano as a very young child, and at age 18 he won the amateur talent competition at Harlem's Apollo Theater three weeks in a row. After briefly being a member of a hip-hop group called I.D.U., his first major success came in 1994 as the co-writer and co-producer of "U Will Know".
His debut solo album, Brown Sugar, released in July 1995, received rave reviews and sold over two million copies. Along with artists like Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill, Maxwell, and collaborator Angie Stone, D'Angelo became part of the Neo soul movement. Following this D'Angelo went on a hiatus before releasing Voodoo in January 2000, which debuted at number one. Its lead single "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," was a smash on the R&B charts and won a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal; likewise, Voodoo won for Best R&B Album.
Following the release of "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," D'Angelo became more uncomfortable with his growing status as a sex symbol. This was followed by numerous personal struggles including alcoholism, and a fourteen-year musical hiatus. D'Angelo released his third studio album, Black Messiah, in December 2014, although it was originally set for release in 2015; the album was met with critical acclaim and fared well on music charts, peaking at number five on the US Billboard 200.
Early life
D'Angelo was born Michael Eugene Archer, in Richmond, Virginia on February 11, 1974, to a Pentecostal preacher father. He was raised in an entirely Pentecostal family. Archer's musical talents were discovered very early on. At 3, he was spotted by his 10-year-old brother Luther, playing the house piano. Following the formation of his native-Richmond, Virginia musical group, Michael Archer and Precise, and its success on the Amateur Night competition at Harlem, New York's Apollo Theater in 1991, the 18-year-old singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist dropped out of school and moved to New York City, as an attempt to develop his music career. The group previously enjoyed some notice in Richmond, evenly dividing their repertoire between soul covers and originals, while D'Angelo accumulated compositions of his own and developed his songwriting skills. The group's turnout on Amateur Night resulted in three consecutive wins and cash prize, after which, upon returning home to Richmond, D'Angelo was inspired to produce an album and began composing material, after a brief tenure as a member of the hip hop group I.D.U. (Intelligent, Deadly but Unique).
Career
1991–1995:
Brown Sugar
D'Angelo signed a publishing deal with EMI Music in 1991 after catching the attention of record executives through a demo tape, which was originally by the group. After an impressive audition for EMI execs, a three-hour impromptu piano recital, D'Angelo was signed to a recording contract in 1993. A&R-man Gary Harris was primarily responsible for his signing, while manager Kedar Massenburg helped negotiate the contract as well. Massenburg became D'Angelo's manager after hearing of him through "the buzz on the streets". He had previously managed hip hop group Stetsasonic and formed the artist management-firm Kedar Entertainment in 1991, which he diversified into production, music publishing and publicity.
In 1994, his first significant success came in the form of the hit single "U Will Know". D'Angelo co-wrote and co-produced the song for the all-male R&B supergroup Black Men United, which featured R&B singers such as Brian McKnight, Usher, R. Kelly, Boyz II Men, Raphael Saadiq and Gerald Levert. D'Angelo composed the music for "U Will Know", while his brother, Luther Archer, wrote the lyrics. Originally featured on the soundtrack to the film Jason's Lyric (1994), the single peaked at number 5 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks and at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. The music video for "U Will Know" featured D'Angelo as the group's choir director; he reprised the role for the live performance of the song at the Soul Train Music Awards. That same year, he wrote and produced the song "Overjoyed" for the Boys Choir of Harlem, which appeared on their studio album The Sound of Hope (1994). The success of "U Will Know" helped build the buzz surrounding D'Angelo, which was followed by a number of highly promoted showcases, and added to the buzz among music industry insiders.
Brown Sugar was released in June 1995. Although sales were sluggish at first, the album was eventually a hit. The album debuted at number six on the US Billboard Top R&B Albums chart in the week of July 22, 1995. It ultimately peaked at number four in the week of February 24, 1996, and spent a total of 54 weeks on the chart. Brown Sugar also spent 65 weeks on the Billboard 200 and peaked at number 22 on the chart. It sold 300,000 copies within its two months of release. The album had been selling 35,000 to 40,000 copies a week through to November 1995, and by January 1996, it had sold 400,000 copies. With the help of its four singles, including the gold-selling Billboard Hot 100 hit "Lady" and R&B top-ten singles "Brown Sugar" and "Cruisin", the album reached sales of 500,000 copies in the United States by October 1995. On February 7, 1996, it was certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, following shipments in excess of one million copies in the U.S. The album was certified gold in Canada on May 9, 2000. Its total sales have been estimated within the range of 1.5 million to over two million copies.
1996–2000: Sabbatical period and Voodoo
Following the success of his debut album Brown Sugar (1995), D'Angelo went into a four and a half year absence from the music scene and releasing solo work. After spending two years on tour promoting Brown Sugar, D'Angelo found himself stuck with writer's block. On the setback, D'Angelo later stated "The thing about writer's block is that you want to write so fucking bad, [but] the songs don't come out that way. They come from life. So you've got to live to write." During his sabbatical period, he generally released cover versions and remakes, including a cover-collaboration with Erykah Badu of the Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell duet song "Your Precious Love" for the soundtrack to High School High (1996). D'Angelo also covered Prince's "She's Always in My Hair" for the Scream 2 soundtrack (1997), as well as the Ohio Players' "Heaven Must Be Like This" for the Down in the Delta soundtrack (1998). He also appeared on a duet, "Nothing Even Matters", with Lauryn Hill for her debut solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill (1998). He also spent the time lifting weights, smoking weed, and making music.
The much-delayed follow-up to Brown Sugar, Voodoo, was finally released in 2000 on Virgin Records after the EMI Records Group was absorbed by the former label. Voodoo received rave reviews from contemporary music critics. who dubbed it a "masterpiece" and D'Angelo's greatest work. The album debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, selling 320,000 copies in its first week. It entered the Billboard 200 on February 12, 2000 and remained on the chart for 33 consecutive weeks. As of 2005, the album has sold over 1.7 million copies in the US, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In 2001, Voodoo won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Album at the 43rd Grammy Awards, which was awarded to D'Angelo and recording engineer Russell Elevado.
Its first two singles, "Devil's Pie" and "Left & Right", peaked at number 69 and number 70 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The latter was commercially aimed at R&B and hip hop-oriented radio stations due to the prominence of rappers Redman and Method Man on the track. According to Rich Ford, Jr., producer of the "Left & Right" music video, both the single and the video went commercially unnoticed due to MTV's refusal to place the song's video in rotation, serving as punishment for missing the deadline for its initial premiere. The fifth single "Feel Like Makin' Love" was less successful, reaching number 109 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles & Tracks. "Send It On", the album's fourth single, achieved moderate chart success, peaking at number 33 on Billboard's Pop Singles chart. The album's third single, "Untitled (How Does It Feel)", became its greatest chart success, peaking at number 25 on the Hot 100 Singles and at number two on the R&B Singles chart. Its infamous music video helped in boosting the song's appeal, as well as D'Angelo's. Billboard wrote of the video, "It's pure sexuality. D'Angelo, muscularly cut and glistening, is shot from the hips up, naked, with just enough shown to prompt a slow burning desire in most any woman who sees it. The video alone could make the song one of the biggest of the coming year". It earned three nominations for the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year, Best R&B Video, and Best Male Video.
2001–2013: Second sabbatical, struggles and delayed album
Towards the end of his worldwide tour in support of the album that same year, D'Angelo's personal issues had worsened, affecting performances. He became more conscious of and uncomfortable with his status as a sex symbol, and after the tour D'Angelo returned to his home in Richmond, Virginia, disappearing from the public eye. Several of D'Angelo's peers and affiliates have noted the commercial impact of the "Untitled (How Does It Feel)" music video and The Voodoo Tour as contributing factors to D'Angelo's period of absence from the music scene. His former music manager, Dominique Trenier, explained his disappointment in the music video's impact in a 2008 interview for Spin magazine. Trenier was quoted as saying that "to this day, in the general populace's memory, he's the naked dude".
According to tour manager Alan Leeds, the experience "took away his confidence, because he's not convinced why any given fan is supporting him." Following the suicide of his close friend, MTV-affiliate Fred Jordan, in April 2001, he started to develop a drinking problem. As his alcoholism escalated, plans for a live album and a Soultronics studio effort, both originally set for after the tour, were scrapped, and impatient Virgin executives cut off funding for the expected 2004 solo album.
By 2005, D'Angelo's girlfriend had left him, his attorney had become displeased with him, and most of his family was not in touch with him. He also parted ways with manager Dominique Trenier and tour manager Alan Leeds. After a car accident and an arrest on DUI and marijuana possession charges, D'Angelo left Virgin Records in 2005 and checked into the Crossroads Centre rehabilitation clinic in Antigua. In 2005, his recording contract was acquired by J Records, following rumors of D'Angelo signing to Bad Boy Records. Despite no solo output, D'Angelo collaborated with some R&B and hip hop artists during this period between albums, appearing on albums such as J Dilla's The Shining (2006), Snoop Dogg's Tha Blue Carpet Treatment (2006), Common's Finding Forever (2007), and Q-Tip's The Renaissance (2008).
D'Angelo's subsequent solo work was extensively delayed. Production for a full-length follow-up to Voodoo was stagnant, as he was working on and off mostly by himself during 2002. D'Angelo attempted to play every instrument for the project, striving for complete creative control similar to that of Prince. Russell Elevado described the resulting material as "Parliament/Funkadelic meets the Beatles meets Prince, and the whole time there's this Jimi Hendrix energy". However, those who previewed its songs found it to be unfinished. In the years that followed, D'Angelo's personal problems worsened, descending to drug and alcohol addiction. In January 2005 he was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine. Various mugshots began circulating around the time, showing the singer looking overweight and unhealthy, in stark contrast to the muscular D'Angelo seen in promotion for Voodoo. In September 2005, a week after being sentenced on the drug charges, he was involved in a car accident, and was rumoured to be critically injured. However, a week after the crash a statement was issued by D'Angelo's attorney stating that he was fine continuing to say "He is anxious to finish the recording of his soul masterpiece that the world has patiently awaited.
No more was revealed on the new album until 2007, when Questlove leaked an unfinished track on Triple J Radio in Australia. Entitled "Really Love", the track was an acoustic flavored jam with a laid back swing feel. The leak apparently soured relations between the two. D'Angelo released a CD/DVD compilation album entitled The Best So Far…, first released on June 24, 2008 on Virgin Records. The compilation features songs from his two previous studio albums, Brown Sugar and Voodoo, as well as rarities and a second disc, a DVD of previously unreleased videos. Around the same time, the compilation was released digitally without the Erykah Badu and Raphael Saddiq featured songs, under the title Ultimate D'Angelo.
In late November 2011, D'Angelo announced a series of 2012 European tour dates. The tour kicked off January 26 in Stockholm, Sweden with its final show on February 10. The tour featured a selection of hits from his two previous albums and songs from his upcoming album, which was close to completion. He premièred 4 new songs: "Sugah Daddy", "Ain't That Easy", "Another Life" and "The Charade" which were well received. On June 9, 2012, he joined Roots drummer ?uestlove for the annual Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival's Superjam. Although he didn't play any of his original material, this marked the first time in nearly 12 years that he performed on stage in the US. On September 1, 2012, D'Angelo performed at Jay-Z's Made In America festival where he again performed the new songs, "The Charade" and "Sugah Daddy". On October 7, RCA Music Group announced that it was disbanding J Records, Arista Records, and Jive Records. With the shutdown, D'Angelo (and all other artists previously signed to those labels) would release his future material on RCA Records.
2014–present: Black Messiah
D'Angelo released his third studio album, Black Messiah in December 2014, D'Angelo originally wanted to release Black Messiah in 2015, but the controversial decisions in the Ferguson and Eric Garner cases inspired him to release it earlier. On December 12, 2014, Kevin Liles, D'Angelo's manager, shared a 15-second teaser of the album on YouTube. Two days later, the track "Sugah Daddy", which had been part of D'Angelo's set list since 2012, premiered at 3am EST and 1,000 downloads were available on Red Bull's 20 Before 15 website. After an exclusive listening party in New York, Black Messiah was released digitally on December 15 through iTunes, Google Play Music, and Spotify. The album's unexpected release was compared to Beyoncé's self-titled release in 2013. On January 13, 2015, "Really Love" was released to urban adult contemporary radio in the US.
The album was met with universal acclaim from critics and it currently has a 95/100 mean score on review aggregator Metacritic. In its first week of release, Black Messiah debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 and sold 117,000 copies in the United States. In its second week, the album dropped to number twenty five on the chart and sold another 40,254 copies. In the United Kingdom, it debuted at number 47 on the UK Albums Chart with first-week sales of 7,423 copies. D'Angelo is supporting Black Messiah with a tour called The Second Coming. His band, The Vanguard, includes drummer Chris Dave, bassist Pino Palladino, guitarists Jesse Johnson and Isaiah Sharkey, vocalists Kendra Foster, Jermaine Holmes, and Charles "Redd" Middleton, and keyboardist Cleo "Pookie" Sample. The European leg commenced in Zurich on February 11, 2015, and concluded in Brussels on March 7.
In June 2015, D'Angelo confirmed to Rolling Stone that he was working on more material for a new album, calling it "a companion piece" to Black Messiah. In 2016 Black Messiah won Best R&B Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards as well as Best R&B Song for "Really Love" which also was nominated for Record of the Year. Black Messiah, Beyoncé's self-titled (2013), Run the Jewels' Run the Jewels 2 (2014) and Kendrick Lamar's, To Pimp a Butterfly (2015), were noted as laying the groundwork down for the political charged releases that happened in 2016, which included Anti, by Rihanna, Kanye West's The Life of Pablo, and Beyonce's "Formation".
D'Angelo performed Prince's "Sometimes it Snows in April" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in April 2016 accompanied by Maya Rudolph and Gretchen Lieberum as a tribute to the late musician, appearing 'overcome with emotion' at the passing of a major influence.
Artistry
In a 1995 interview, he discussed the influence that musician Prince had on his approach to recording his debut album, stating "I was one of those guys who read the album credits and I realized that Prince was a true artist. He wrote, produced, and performed, and that's the way I wanted to do it." According to D'Angelo, the hip hop influence present on the album "came from the Native Tongues movement - Tribe Called Quest, Gangstarr and Main Source." In a February 1999 interview with music journalist Touré, D'Angelo discussed his original inspirations to produce music, stating "The sound and feel of my music are going to be affected by what motivates me to do it". On his visit to South Carolina, D'Angelo stated that he "went through this runnel, through gospel, blues, and a lot of old soul, old James Brown, early, early Sly and the Family Stone, and a lot of Jimi Hendrix", and "I learned a lot about music, myself, and where I want to go musically". In the same interview, he cited the deaths of rappers Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. as having a great effect on him during the period. During the production of his second studio album D'Angelo recorded numerous hours of unreleased, original material, as well as covers of his influencers' material. Collectively referred to by D'Angelo as "yoda", these influencers included soul artist Al Green, funk artist George Clinton, and Afrobeat artist Fela Kuti.
Personal life
In the 1990s, he dated soul singer Angie Stone and helped produce her debut album Black Diamond in 1999. They have a son, also named Michael, born in 1998. Following the suicide of his close friend, MTV-affiliate Fred Jordan, in April 2001, he started to develop a drinking problem. By 2005, D'Angelo's girlfriend Cannelle Santos had left him, his attorney had become displeased with him, and most of his family was not in touch with him. He also parted ways with manager Dominique Trenier and tour manager Alan Leeds. After a car accident and an arrest on DUI and marijuana possession charges, D'Angelo left Virgin Records in 2005 and checked into the Crossroads Centre rehabilitation clinic in Antigua.
