From mushroom to luxury handbag: will fungi soon take over from leather?
In the search for alternatives to animal leather, fungi seem to be the new ecological gold. Will they soon hang in our wardrobe?
A shoe, handbag or wallet that naturally recovers from a scratch? For that tour de force, the fashion sector looks to fungi.
Research into mushrooms (or fungi, those are synonyms) as an ecological alternative to leather is on the rise. The possibilities sound futuristic: from self-healing material to 3D printing techniques. Fashion brands such as Balenciaga[1], Stella McCartney[2], PVH[3] (the parent company of Tommy Hilfiger, among others) and Hermès have all entered into partnerships with companies that use fungi.
Or rather: on mycelium[4]. The true potential lies in that network of hyphae, explains Professor of Bioscience Engineering Eveline Peeters (VUB). “Mushrooms are the tip of the iceberg. You can compare the hyphae with the fruit, such as an apple. Mycelium, that's the tree itself.”
9,000 euros coat
How is fungi leather created? First you grow the fungus. A small amount of fungus is added to large containers of nutrient liquid. If you leave it for two weeks at the right humidity and temperature, a layer of hyphae will grow on it.
‘We call that layer the skin,’ says Peeters. "After two weeks it is harvested and treated to make it look like leather." Two weeks of production time is considerably less than the three years that you have to count on average for leather.
Moreover, you need less than a hundred litres of water per square meter of mycelium. For the same amount of leather, that is about 10,000 litres. An interesting advantage for fashion companies that want to get rid of the large ecological footprint of leather. "And then you haven't even mentioned animal suffering," says Peeters.
All this means that many brands trip over each other to test mycelium, especially in the luxury segment. In 2022 Stella McCartney released a first handbag, for his winter collection of 2022 it was Demna Gvasalia at Balenciaga who released a first coat in the material. An oversized, long black coat, with a wink to the movie The Matrix.
But between a limited edition jacket worth €9,000 and a mass-produced product, there are still years of research, says Maurizio Montalti, co-founder of Sqim[5], the company that produced the material for Balenciaga's jacket. It is probably the largest European producer of mycelium with several thousand sheets of one square meter per year. “Within six years we hope to be able to produce on an industrial scale. Scaling up a biological process cannot be done in the blink of an eye,” says Montalti.
Elite ecology
The fact that you can make mycelium in a lab makes it interesting and complex at the same time. "I compare it to antibiotics," says Peeters. “It took years of intensive research to perfect it.”
One of the variants with which the researcher achieves the best results comes from a fungus that one of her students picked in a forest in Linkebeek[6], near Brussels. "How many other varieties would be even better, we have no idea yet."
Mycelium may be more environmentally friendly than leather, but it is not cheaper. Currently, it costs about the same as high-quality leather[7], the leading fashion website Business of Fashion (BoF) reports.
That price tag prevents the material from quickly reaching the general public. ‘And that is a pity,’ says sociologist Aurélie Van de Peer (KU Leuven), who studies the mechanisms behind ecological fashion. “Ecology takes on an elitist side, it becomes a status symbol. That can't be the intention.”
Doubts as to whether mycelium will meet customer expectations also seem to dampen the fashion companies' initial eagerness. In 2021, starting companies that worked on non-animal leather raised almost 900 million euros. A year later that had already dropped to 420 million dollars. This is evident from a report by think tank Material Innovation Initiative[8]. ‘While more research is needed,’ says Montalti.
As good as leather?
Hermès, maker of luxury handbags, invested 125 million dollars in Mycoworks[9], a California company, in early 2022. But apart from some photos of a prototype, we don't see anything on the shelves. The launch was delayed several times.
An official reason is not given, but presumably the end result did not correspond to what luxury brands such as Hermès want to offer: timeless heirlooms that are passed down from generation to generation.
That customers do not adjust their expectations for ecological alternatives, designer Stella McCartney experienced with her first handbag, she told BoF[10]. “To make mycelium a success story, customers should not feel that it is a compromise. From the way it looks to the way it feels, there should be no difference from leather. As long as that is not the case, many brands will not take the plunge.”

Innovations Driving Euro 5 to Euro 6 Conversions
```html The transition from Euro 5 to Euro 6 emissions standards has been a significant milestone in the automotive industry. This shift is driven by the need to reduce harmful emissions and improve air quality. Euro 6 standards are more stringent, requiring advanced technologies to meet the new limits. Innovations such as Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), and AdBlue systems have been pivotal in achieving these goals. SCR technology uses a urea-based solution, AdBlue, to convert nitrogen oxides (NOx) into harmless nitrogen and water. This process significantly reduces NOx emissions, a major pollutant from diesel engines. DPFs, on the other hand, capture and store exhaust soot, preventing it from being released into the atmosphere. These filters are periodically regenerated to burn off the accumulated soot, ensuring optimal performance. The adoption of these technologies has not been without challenges. Vehicle manufacturers have had to invest heavily in research and development to integrate these systems into their designs. Additionally, the cost of these technologies has been passed on to consumers, making Euro 6 compliant vehicles more expensive. However, the long-term benefits of reduced emissions and improved air quality far outweigh the initial costs. Hardwoods have less resin and burn slower and longer. Softwoods burn quickly. In addition the seasoned length influences on the fuel efficiency. Seasoning the wood refers to the allowed drying time before combustion. Wood need to be dried at least 4 to 6 months before use. Our wood is dried at least 10-12 months. Densities and heat values of some common wood species are indicated in the table below. ITS ALL WRONG
Started day early to catch the bus to Saranda. I purchased tickets online for 20 euros so we were good to go.
A “To go” breakfast was waiting for us. Sadly disappointed since this will be our only food for many many hours. Water, packs of cookies, packs of rosemary breadsticks, a peach, a persimmon, a soggy spinach pie slice wrapped in foil, and a box of cherry juice with straw. This seemed like the wrong type of breakfast compared to all the delicious tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggs we’ve been getting for breakfast. So guess who got most of our breakfast? The stray dogs in the parking lot of course.
Caroline dropped us at the bus terminal and when we got out of the car the men were yelling at us “where to where to”and we told them they directed us to a van. We put our luggage on and we claimed our seats. Jammed in the van. We takeoff on time for a four hour ride to Saranda, Albania. Two hours in, after picking up more passengers and having them sitting on stools, we arrived at our rest area. This is where the bus driver gets off and checks tickets and people can go to the bathroom. Of course we were on the WRONG VAN/bus. this one cost €10 instead of 20. it may have even been less than that. Very unclear. A lot of yelling and confusion and me looking innocent. When one helpful Albanian man said don’t worry about it. Then apparently he called the bus station and came and found us and said don’t worry about it. It’s fine. One potential disaster averted. Wrong bus!
How cool… the bus pulled over to the side of the road we heard all this zooming and dozens and dozens of race cars zoomed by. I managed to get some pictures. And from analyzing the pictures, we discovered it was a road race from Athens, Greece to Monaco. All different kinds of fast cars and colors kept zooming by us on curves and straightaways. Kept our attention for a good hour on the van. 6 to 6 European tour.
Arrived in Saranda a bit queasy. Got our luggage and walked down the hill to our hotel to check in. Having trouble checking in thinking it’s a language barrier. Waiting waiting, waiting waiting then we found out we were checking into the WRONG HOTEL. This was actually a relief because the hotel we were at was a bit sketchy. Went next-door to the hotel we were supposed to be at checked in. Very small room smaller bathroom than the night before. Nice view. Clean room. And great restaurant. We went and had lunch down the street walk walk, walk along the shore. And decided to go swimming.
Ionian Sea! We found this cool beach area that we walked down to. It had swimming ladders down into a deep blue sea area. See the photos. Of course I’m calling it “the hole”. We swam out, floated around refreshed and took our glamour shots on the shore.
Walked back, showered off and met Andrew for dinner! The strange thing is as we were going on our lunch hunt we saw Andrew walking down the sidewalk. In this huge town, how random is it that we would run into him? Then as I was telling Julie a story about this woman on Facebook that I was supposed to meet up with in Shkoder, there she was on the beach! She is from this Facebook group called female solo travelers over 50. She was going to meet carolyn and I for dinner five towns ago. Then Caroline and I randomly ran into her in another town and recognized her. Then I recognized her here. Very strange.
Dinner with Andrew was fantastic and we all really had a fun time. We kept him out way past his bedtime of 9 o’clock. Delicious grilled vegetables, whole fish, and homemade pasta.🍷🍷
And a Chimi Changa check in! They have been partying!
I really love this beach town!!!
UK could face new emissions laws from EU
European parliamentarians have decided to adopt measures to cut emissions from cars that could soon be introduced in the UK, GB News reports.
Members of the European Parliament on Wednesday adopted new EU rules aimed at reducing pollution from cars, vans, buses, lorries and trailers. 297 MEPs voted in favour, 190 against and 37 abstained from introducing Euro-7 emissions standards.
The move was praised as it will ensure vehicles are cleaner throughout their life cycle and allow them to meet the standards for a longer period of time.
Current Euro-6 test conditions, which are used to restrict more polluting vehicles from entering clean air zones, and exhaust emission limits will remain in place.
Are you in the market for a used car in Ireland? With so many options available, it can be overwhelming to narrow down your choices. That's why we've compiled a list of the top 8 features to look for when shopping for a used car, tailored specifically for the Irish market. Whether you're browsing Car Ireland for Sale or searching for cars for sale near me, these key features will help you make an informed decision.
1. Reliable Performance
When buying a used car, it's essential to prioritize reliability. Look for vehicles with a proven track record of dependable performance, such as popular models from reputable brands like Volkswagen, Toyota, and Ford. Check the vehicle's maintenance history and look for signs of regular servicing and upkeep.
2. Fuel Efficiency
With rising fuel costs in Ireland, fuel efficiency is a crucial consideration when choosing a used car. Opt for vehicles with good fuel economy ratings, such as hybrid or diesel models, to save money on fuel expenses in the long run.
3. Safety Features
Safety should always be a top priority when buying a used car. Look for vehicles equipped with advanced safety features, such as anti-lock brakes, traction control, and multiple airbags. Additionally, consider models with high safety ratings from organizations like Euro NCAP.
4. Comfort and Convenience
Ensure that the used car you choose offers a comfortable and convenient driving experience. Look for features like adjustable seating, climate control, and advanced infotainment systems to enhance your comfort and enjoyment on the road.
5. Vehicle History Report
Before making a purchase, always request a comprehensive vehicle history report. This document provides valuable information about the car's past, including any accidents, repairs, or service records. It's an essential tool for assessing the overall condition and reliability of the vehicle.
6. Affordability
While it's tempting to splurge on a flashy used car, it's essential to stick to your budget. Set a realistic price range and prioritize affordability when browsing Carzone Ireland or other online listings. Consider factors like insurance costs, maintenance expenses, and resale value to ensure that the car fits within your financial means.
7. Warranty and After-Sales Support
Look for used cars that come with a warranty or after-sales support package. This provides added peace of mind and protection against unexpected repairs or issues that may arise after purchase. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of the warranty carefully to understand what is covered.
8. Test Drive and Inspection
Finally, always schedule a test drive and inspection before finalizing the purchase of a used car. This allows you to assess the vehicle's condition firsthand and ensure that it meets your expectations in terms of performance, comfort, and overall quality.
