Once again, I think I'll have a different favorite moment this week than most.

For me, the element of Barem's personality that makes him different from other violent manipulators in Shonen manga is how much his expressions betray his DISAPPOINTMENT in Denji.

His feelings are genuinely hurt when Denji cares about other people, and especially that he cares about Nayuta.

He knows logically that Denji - and by extension himself - are still mostly human. They aren't devoid of emotion - Barem himself has stated that his heart 'belongs' to Makima.

The disappointment he feels about Denji is a nice bridge (teehee) to Makima, actually.

Denji wasn't good enough (evil enough?) for her. Not enough of a devil, not ruthless and 'chaotic' enough. Hilarious, considering Denji takes people hostage and half the time we don't know what he's going to do the next chapter, but that was how she felt.

Barem isn't a copy of Makima, though. Barem likes flash, he likes going big, he fancies himself a supervillain. He built a fucking Avengers Tower-style sign on his obviously evil megachurch.

Barem styles himself as above things like sentiment and emotions because he's a Devil. He's better than People. A higher class of being, immortal and untouchable.

But he still feels it. Anger and resentment and disappointment. Because he's not better. Turning someone else into a God does not make you beyond Gods. He's still just a man.

Emotionally unintelligent white boy. Fake ass IDGAF-er I saw you briefly recognize your own insecurities and humanity as you pathetically try to manipulate Denji better than your not-girlfriend. Dumbass.
