Charlie Chaplin with writers Upton Sinclair (white suit) & Rob Wagner 1918, on set of “Shoulder Arms” 1918.
Upton Sinclair (1878-1968), an author and Pulitzer Prize winner but most famous for his 1906 book “The Jungle”. “The Jungle” exposed the U.S. Meat Packing Industry, shocking in it’s portrayal of the unsanitary conditions and how unsafe it was for public health. This ultimately led to stricter inspections in the form of the “Pure Food and Drug Act” & “Meat Inspection Act”.
An author, Rob Wagner among his many talents, published weekly liberal magazine “Script” from 1929-1949, it’s focus film industry, California and national politics.
Both Upton Sinclair and Rob Wagner were very influential in Charlie Chaplin early political worldview.

All the Eli bits in Oil! by Upton Sinclair
So lately I’ve been obsessing over There Will Be Blood (2007) and the novel it’s loosely based on. I think Oil! is a great book and I encourage you to read it in full, but I made a pdf with all the bits in which Eli Watkins appears or is mentioned if you want to incorporate book characterization to your depictions of Eli Sunday or if you are just curious.
He is my favorite character in the novel and I wish more ppl knew of him.
If I missed any line please tell me

Torn between knowing that this book is part of how we got the FDA and knowing that Sinclair was trying to shine a light on how severely the American worker was exploited and experiencing actual physical jealousy that Jurgis just walked up to the boss and was like "hello. Job please" and he got one.
