I’m actually serious about this, if at all possible, right now is a very good time to request queer books from your local library. Whether they get them or not is not in your control, but it is so important to show that there is a desire for queer books. I will also say getting more queer books in libraries and supporting queer authors are pretty fantastic byproducts of any action.
This isn’t something everyone can do, but please do see if you are one of the people who has the privilege to engage in this form of activism, and if you are, leverage that privilege for all you’re worth.
For anyone who can’t think of a queer book to request, here is a little list of some queer books that I think are underrated and might not be in circulation even at larger libraries:
Refusing Compulsory Sexuality: A Black Asexual Lens on Our Sex-Obsessed Culture by Sherronda J. Brown
Silver Under Nightfall by Rin Chupeco
Harvard's Secret Court: The Savage 1920 Purge of Campus Homosexuals by William Wright
The Perks of Loving a Wallflower by Erica Ridley
God Themselves by Jae Nichelle
IRL by Tommy Pico
The Pink Line: Journeys Across the World's Queer Frontiers by Mark Gevisser
Passing Strange by Ellen Klages
The New Queer Conscience by Adam Eli
Fierce Femmes and Notorious Liars: A Dangerous Trans Girl's Confabulous Memoir by Kai Cheng Thom
Queering the Tarot by Cassandra Snow
Wash Day Diaries by Jamila Rowser
Queer Magic: Lgbt+ Spirituality and Culture from Around the World by Tomás Prower
Before We Were Trans: A New History of Gender by Kit Heyam
Beyond the Pale by Elana Dykewomon
Hi Honey, I'm Homo! by Matt Baume
The Deep by Rivers Solomon
Homie: Poems by Danez Smith
The Secret Life of Church Ladies by Deesha Philyaw
The Companion by E.E. Ottoman
Kapaemahu by Dean Hamer, Joe Wilson, Hinaleimoana Wong-Kalu
Sacrament of Bodies by Romeo Oriogun
Witching Moon by Poppy Woods
Tell Me I'm Worthless by Alison Rumfitt
Dead Collections by Isaac Fellman
Disintegrate/Dissociate by Arielle Twist
Dear Senthuran: A Black Spirit Memoir by Akwaeke Emezi
Peaches and Honey by Imogen Markwell-Tweed
Nepantla: An Anthology Dedicated to Queer Poets of Color by Christopher Soto
#queer books#queer history#lgbt history#honestly#libraries are a massive resource in terms of preserving and uplifting marginalized narratives#and as a community#that has been so very excluded from both fictional and nonfictional narratives#this is a great way to reclaim and care for the stories that have been surpressed for so long

Bridgerton - S3E02 “How Bright the Moon” // S3E03 “Forces of Nature”

Justin baldoni decided to adapt It Ends With Us because he thought that stories about domestic violence, and specifically escaping and life beyond domestic violence deserved to be platformed.
Instead of being supported, he’s been mean girl’d by the cast; that’s treating the film like its this cutesy rom com : and I think this rly encapsulates everything that’s wrong with the book, and the fanbase it’s amassed
#adi.txt#it ends with us#anti colleen hoover#justin baldoni#it actually makes me so so upset like every single appearance he’s doing for this press tour#justin is talking about dv statistics and uplifting blake and uplifting colleen#he directed and starred in this film#meanwhile the rest of the cast is ltr acting like this is just another rom com#like justin’s so specific in his interviews about how the reason he made this film was to draw attention to domestic violence#and the struggles that victims go through#and hopes to reach out to victims of domestic violence and empower them thru this film#and do i think colleen hoover’s book is the right avenue for that message ?#no#but i also think that its so pathetic of everyone else involved in this film to actively disregard that vision during this press tour#and just ice justin out of his own film

There's something about reading really great writing that's so relaxing. You can just sit back and let the words wash over you, knowing that you can trust the writer.
#random thought of the day#books#part of the reason i'm not getting writing done today was because i spent most of my free time reading from books i've let sit for too long#i haven't been able to sink into good fiction for a while#so elizabeth goudge felt like a spiritual experience#cleansing and uplifting#it always takes me a while to get into her books#there's a learning curve of a couple of chapters to adjust to the style#but once i break through it's bliss#it becomes easy as breathing#there's nothing quite like what she does#i love books that understand that goodness isn't boring or trite#you don't need to have 'darkness' and 'grit' to be complex#like one bit that took my breath away was the talk about sallie and david's marriage struggles#they're both good people who love each other#but they also have their differences because they're human and that causes struggles#not marriage-breaking struggles just nuanced life struggles#and i'm not sure i've seen something like that in a book before#it's a good marriage they married the right people but that doesn't mean life is perfect#goudge uderstands that marriage isn't happily ever after--heaven is#and a good marriage is two people partnering up to help each other reach that goal#it's so much more adult than any 'complex adult' work i've seen

Dogs of War is a fun sci fi book, but I wish it leaned a bit more into being about man’s relationship with animals rather then being kinda a standard AI story just with uplifted animals instead of robots.
#Like…as much as you can with a book about a cyborganic dog man with guns#The more interesting parts is when it leans into the animal nature of the characters having limited reasoning and critter desires#a lot of the parts from the human povs feel like you could of replaced uplifted dogs with robots and it wouldn’t of changed much

i think this fandom does jeyne poole such a disservice on all fronts but especially in terms of when she is brought up in discourse. she is almost always used to uplift another character’s position or morality when that’s already what’s happening in the source material and it makes me fucking sad
#asoiaf#jeyne poole#i feel like it’s because her suffering isn’t sensationalised in the book and she’s instead just… miserable#by sensationalised i mean in terms of her own character. she’s not uplifted because of this#she’s miserable and sad and nothing that happens is on her own terms#and this fandom just perpetuates that treatment of her

So, Book of Bill, huh?
#idk I've not read it#this did not come out like i wanted it AT ALL#what it was supposed to be was the spark from mcguckets “memory inferno” burning a hole through bills eye#but uh. yeah it's not great#i honestly wouldn't post it but i cramped my fingers making it so therefore you need to look at it#although i REALLY hope this just gets like 30 notes. or less even.#though i guess writing that out is pretty much jinxing it. :|#what's the opposite of sharing with your friends. uh. hide it from your friends#i guess if it gets too high i can just private it but idk that feels mean yknow#i make stuff to uplift people. if my art would make someone even think something that helps them feel better then i want them to have it#privating it just feels like I'm keeping that away#anyways right yeah fandom tags#book of bill spoilers#gravity falls spoilers#book of bill#gravity falls#bill cipher#don't follow if you're expecting more gf btw. I've had that happen a couple times. I'm a comic book girl. that's what i post about.#this is the only gf thing I'll post... possibly ever. just got really into all the posts and decided to make this#sorry :/

I could not care less if people personally choose not to read classics. However nothing pisses me off like "I don't read classics because they're all written by dead old white guys" you apologize to Toni Morrison NOW!!!!
#k talks#books#you know what I mean... like it's such a shitty excuse to make while also letting the person saying it feel morally superior#and just so untrue. it's doing such an injustice to so many authors#and literally fails to give credit to the actual authors the people making these claims supposedly care about uplifting. lol.#obviously there's many others but I've never read a book by Toni Morrison that I'm NOT going to think about for the rest of my life#classic literature

Being a woc fan of Bridgerton can be a struggle, especially when it comes to liking the poc characters on the show, especially the woc. Like I remember when s1 came out and the blatant microaggressions and just plain racism coming from this fandom was atrocious. You had people spewing very hateful things about Charlotte, Marina, and Simon and undermining the latter two's pain and trauma at the hands of the white characters---Marina was treated terribly by the Featheringtons and, whether you like Penelope or not, you cannot deny that she also played a part by releasing that letter to the Ton and Simon was violated Daphne no matter how people try to spin the story to offer her some form of sympathy (it still blows my mind that people would want to though).
S2 is just as bad (not even including how they changed the Sharma family's storyline than how it was in the books when that wasn't necessary) and the racist undertones many of the fans have towards Mary and Edwina (as well as Kate but for her it's carries more brown woman needing to be saved by a white man when Anthony is involved because a lot of you all in the fandom are quick to use this trope such as "oh, he's the only one who truly knows her"). The lack of screen time for this family really ends up hurting them to but even with that, whether you like Mary and Edwina or not, it would be a lie to deny the racism a lot in the fandom hold towards them (and how that falls onto the actresses because it was very apparent how many in the fandom couldn't let two Desi women shine without having to bring down the other and Netflix played into that too for drama) and paints every small thing they do as being terrible crimes but in the same breath will not have the same smoke for the Bridgertons, who have their own set of problems (but because they are also the main family, among other things, they are provided more grace without consequences).
#bridgerton#edwina sharma#kate sharma#mary sharma#marina thompson#queen charlotte#simon basset#like fandoms can be a very hostile place especially toward poc#and don't even get me started on some fans acting like they care about the poc characters but only still fall into the tropes i presented#im nervous for how this post will be received bc ngl when people call out the racist antics in bridgerton people love to downplay it#and that's just not right (for any fandom)#and this impacts actors too bc there should be no reason that charithra can hardly be excited about her role in the show#or how ruby had received so much hate that (probably) as a result had two breakdowns#on top of still being asked by polin and pen fans to denounce marina to uplift their white faves#dni if you can't have a calm conversation here#also seeing the creator of the show say for s3 kathony that there won't be as much angst#more happy couple scenes irks me in a way bc that amount of angst didn't have to flood s2 if they weren't so concerned with pointless drama#like the books themselves gave enough angst without the engaged to your sister plotline and such#also would have made anthony seem like less of a prick and actually respect a woman's honor but nope#don't even get me started on how it seems more common for the poc characters to have to gripe and struggle#(especially with things that....they should not be blamed for) at the hands of or as result of white characters#when in the same breath that courtesy isn't extended to said white characters#(e.g. marina having to push colin in pen's direction even though both failed her#to simon begin assaulted and then blamed for it by daphne and the narrative#to kate having to move mountains to grow (even though for most part she wasn't wrong) but don't even see anthony apologize for his actions)#all the actors especially the woc experience racism (and other forms of discrimination) from this fandom#i haven't even gotten into the shitshow from some fans towards simone and the actor who plays simon#as well as the racism the actresses for queen charlotte faced#a lot of yall need to do better

The Children of Time series is so funny it’s just autistic scientist terraformers trying to make their special interest animal sentient to varying degrees of success
#Senkovi knocked it out the park#Kern had the tragedy of accidentally uplifting spiders instead of her desired monkeys and having an existential crisis about it#Renee Pepper seems to be doing alright with her corvids but also they’re a bit odd? Idk I’ve yet to finish the book but#Anyways children of ruin is my favourite because it’s just autistic scientist makes octopi sentient through the power of special interest#children of ruin#children of time#Children of memory#If you haven’t you should go read the series it’s amazing

oh, so close, buddy, so close. why, yes, it is sexist of grrm to use sansa this way while writing the starkling bonds involving brothers as all but conflictfree! (we only get that one flashback of robb hurting jon by screaming about his bastardy and it's revealed pretty late in the game, near the end of asos, after robb's death. and clearly happened when they were quite young, an isolated incident, without which robb would have been pretty much a perfect brother to jon.) but it's especially bad when sansa/arya aren't just the only stark sisters in present timeline, they're also only one of two developed sisterly relathionships in the entire series, the other being their mother and her sister. that relationship had cracks in it years before catelyn was aware of them, and ended with a death threat from lysa leaving cat bitter towards her. is kinslaying or near-kinslaying the resolution y'all want for arya and her sister or just never meeting again period? what a great sisterly track record that would be for grrm! not to mention a great ending for arya, ignoring her own desire to see all her siblings again and finally have a good relationship with sansa! it's true that you can really tell that agot sansa was created just as a foil to arya and it's clear which sister the writer favored back then, who we're meant to side with. but to think that grrm has done nothing better with sansa since then, has never developed her beyond the token unstark and a "camera pov" for more plot important characters, that she has never once expressed any care for her sister, and that there is never any hope for sisters with a bad childhood relationship to grow and get along better once they're older, that they can never have a good relationship and should never even try, well, i'd say that makes you more sexist than grrm ever was as a writer and also kind of insulting toward his later work. congratulations on that!
#asoiaf#sansa stark#fandom w@nkery#ftr one does not need to be a sansa stan loving above all other starks and other chars to be bothered by sexism#idt feminism equates to uplifting feminine women but it is an interesting choice of grrm's#that he could only introduce conflict for the starks thru more trad girly chars the mean stepmother and prissy princess sister#with the lady of wf defined by her motherhood yet only having scenes with robb (and jon)#while ned interacted with all the starklings bar rickon#and it never occurred to grrm to show conflict w robbjon a rship which should be tinged with jealousy and unintentional enforcement of such#until the 3rd book when robb was already martyred#asoiaf meta#(c)lsb
