The WCCD's 3rd Annual School & Community Habitat Grant - Now Accepting Applications!

Does your school, community organization, or non-profit need expert consultation or plant materials to create a native garden, rain garden, food forest, windbreak, or another native plant project? The WCCD School & Community Habitat Grant is now accepting applications until the June 11th, 2023 deadline!

If you are a consultant who may be interested in partnering to complete these projects, please reach out to summer@washtenawcd.org. We'd love to help promote the great work you do!

Application Deadline:  ​Sunday, June 11, 2023 at 5 p.m.

Our Mission: The WCCD is a local government agency with the mission to assist residents with and provide leadership in the conservation, management, and wise use of natural resources in Washtenaw County.

Grant Purpose: Assist schools and community organizations with accessing plants and establishing wildlife habitat.

Grant Award: Grants will be awarded in the form of tree, shrub, native plant material and technical assistance from WCCD and partners. Grant fund availability is dependent on donations made to the WCCD for this purpose and grant selections and awards will be made based on the amount donated. 

Eligibility:

Applicants must represent or be affiliated with a local school, nonprofit organization, or community group.

The proposed site location must be a public or semi-public space in Washtenaw County.

The applicant must be able to demonstrate ownership or permission in perpetuity at the proposed location.

The application must demonstrate a benefit to local communities, natural and human.  

Applicants need not be experts in ecology but demonstrate a willingness to learn! 

Application Submission & Deadlines: All grant applications must be submitted by the deadline and requirements outlined on the application.

Habitat Grant Application Criteria: Please download the "SCHG Overview (PDF)" and read the complete requirements of an application to be considered by the selection committee, including the rubric used in evaluating the projects.

GRANT AWARD: Each grant award will be provided in the form of plant materials, expert design plans, and installation assistance.

The WCCD staff and our partnering contractors, as requested by the project and within the award budget, may provide any combination of the following:

Site visit for assessment & consultation

Site design plan & maintenance plan

Site materials, such as native plants, trees, and/or shrubs and planting aids (tree shelters, etc.)

Site installation assistance through tools and volunteer outreach

Update 2/7

So.  I’ve gotten a couple asks and DMs about an update on the zine.  Thank you all for reaching out.  We are running a bit behind schedule - at least, slower than what we initially expected as far as turn around time, and it’s due to a couple reasons (none of which are bad, don’t worry).

The zines are in with the printer, and that has been slower than expected.  They were closed for the holidays (as one would anticipate) and so it took them a little while to get to our submissions.  After they did get to the zines, I worked closely with the rep to fine tune the print set up as well as handle the details for the foil embossing on the cover.  They have shipped a hard copy printed proof to me to look over, and I’m anticipating getting it in the next couple working days.  Once approved, the print run will go.

There’s a similar situation with the merchandise; charms and pin - it’s all been ordered, and I have charm proofs also in transit.  Once those arrive and look good, the full order will be placed.

I’m hesitant to give a time estimate at this point since the last time I did I completely disregarded the fact that the print shop would be closed over the holiday, hence why I said mid-January and here we are in early February.  I do think it will be soon.  Part of the delay is just the circumstance of the holiday, and part is due to the fact I requested proofs. I want to make sure this product will live up to the standard everyone expects for the money they put into it, and the proof does slow down the production timeline a bit.

eZines are still available for order, and there will be some extra merchandise due to just the size of the minimum orders.  Once I have the full shipment and make sure nothing’s damaged, etc - I’ll add the leftover merch to the shop site, too. 

If you have ordered - or will order - a digital copy, the PDFs will be sent via email when the physical copies are sent. 

I am grateful for everyone’s patience in this process.  It’s taken longer than planned, but the goal was to create something really fabulous and I hope everyone will be pleased with it in the end.

Since it HAS taken so long after preorders closed, if you have any concerns about moving location or your shipping address in general, touch base with me privately and I’ll make a note on your order to check with you before I drop it in the mail - that way you won’t be left guessing/wondering.
