The EN-01 "Firefly"/"Lightning Bug" to The EN-02 "Lightning Bug" Class SPAC
January 1st, 2300. The day the Empire cracked and the Calamity began. For years after this point, the Inkunan population was devoted to stemming the tide of infection and death. For years, they lost that war. That was until a light flickered through the darkness and grew into the great flame. The EN-01 Firefly. - Armed with a ring of tungsten seismic charges and a pair of projected mag field plasma glassing beams, the original Firefly model was the pinnacle of human creation and the last chance our homeworld was given. The ship was capable of being launched into low orbit by a Sanjati-Dodger Port and sustaining itself in atmosphere for up to 8 days on full burn without refueling. These capabilities were tested well when, at the eleventh hour, the Black Fleet assembled over the English coast. When it appeared we'd struck midnight, the rising plumes gave way to the sight of burning infestation.
As the only ship in centuries capable of leaving the Inkunan atmosphere without the Tower of London or other orbital infrastructure, the EN-01 was then sent on a mission to welcome the Solar system back into the Empire. When war came, the Fireflies were swift and brutal. The example of everything the Empire was at its worst and the testament to the nothingness the Empire's ideals had become. Reunification was one of the greatest reasons Inkuna was no longer fit to be the head of an Empire belonging to all of Sol, but as we ascended beyond the old ways, the sheer destructive power of the Firefly couldn't be ignored.
That being said, the glass cannons of old were unfit for the goals of the Ascendancy. So, the EN-01 line, in full, was updated to the EN-02 "Lightning Bug" chassis. In this refit, the plasma cores were given better internal magnetic shielding as well as a pair of large, thick, armor plates the size of two or three aircraft carriers parked side by side. Though this model had the same classifications, the software and engineering challenge to retain all of the original capabilities of the ship ended up causing severe strain to nearly all facets of he vessel. Soon, the original line of Lightning Bugs had to be retired. The last glass cannon of a dead Empire could not stand as the bulwark of its successor, it seems.

Messes me up that they say "上り電車" (upbound train) to talk about trains going south and "下り電車" (downbound train) when going north here.
#japanese#japanese langblr#apparently it's bc if refers to the direction of tokyo?#downbound = away from tokyo and upbound = towards tokyo#and given i'm north of tokyo all trains going north are going further away from tokyo and are therefore 'downbound'#nothing to do with north being up on a map#still weird bc these trains obviously don't go to tokyo. they're just local lines going between shinjo and yonezawa#can also mean uphill or downhill apparently but the 'downbound' train definitely goes UPhill so that ain't it#victoria's big japan adventure

Swiss Steam por Joe McMillan Por Flickr: Yes, Virginia, steam still runs in Switzerland. Between 1971 and 1982, the 9.6-mile Furka Base Tunnel was constructed under its namesake mountain on the Matterhorn Gothard Bahn's Furka-Oberalp line between Realp and Oberwald. Before its completion, all traffic had to use the historic high-level route via the 1.8 km (1.1 mi) long Furka Summit Tunnel, which was only available seasonally due to the threat posed by heavy snowfalls. After the new tunnel opened, the old line over the summit was retained and is now operated by the Furka Bergstrecke (DFB). The DFB runs seasonal steam-powered tourist trains over the 18-kilometer line with six 0-8-0 cog steam engines. The old line required considerable restoration, which was completed in 2010. The locomotives were built in Switzerland; most were sent to Vietnam years ago. They were repatriated beginning in 2013 and completely rebuilt. In this scene, an upbound train is taking on water at Gletsch, 5 kilometers out of Oberwald.––photo by Joe McMillan, September 22, 2024.

"FREIGHTER WAS FOUND CAPSIZED," Hamilton Spectator. November 11, 1913. Page 5. --- Probability of Crew of Thirty Being Lost ---- Fears For Safety Also of Another Stranded Boat ---- Much Damage at Meaford by Recent Storm ---- Port Huron, Mich., Nov. 10. - A large steel freighter, overturned, was found floating in Lake Huron late to day about eight miles northeast of Port Huron. Captain Reid, of the wrecking crew which located her, arrived here to-night and said her name had not been learned when he left the scene. It is believed that she was abandoned during the terrific gale which swept the lake yesterday.
Captain Reid said a heavy sea was running when the freighter W18 found, and there was no distinguishing mark to identify her. There are a number of large steel boats similar in appearance to the derelict plying the lakes, and the wrecking company had not been notified that any boat which had not been located had been abandoned.
Marine men think that the boat may be an ore-carrier, which became uncontrollable in the storm and shifted her cargo.
Captain Reid returned to the scene of the discovery with a working tug to-night. He did not know whether It would be possible to tow the wreck to the local harbor. If the vessel overturned with the crew aboard it is possible that the loss of life might reach as high as thirty persons or more.
STRANDED ON GULL ROCK Calumet, Mich., Nov. 10. - In the face of a fifty-mile gale, shifting from northeast to northwest, on Lake Superior to-night, fear is expressed for the safety of the crew, numbering twenty-eight men, aboard a steamer stranded on Gull rock, off Manitou island, at the extreme end of Keweenaw point. The life-saving crew at Eagle Harbor is trying to make a run for the wreck to-night.
According to reports which have reached here by wireless, three other steamers are stranded at different points on Lake Superior, and three craft are missing. Two steamers are reported ashore at Isle Royale and Copper Harbor. The watchman at the Portage Lake United States ship canal reports that the steamer Simon Langeil and two consorts left there on Friday morning, upbound, and have not been heard from.
Then boats are in shelter at the ship canal's harbor of refuge, and three more at Bete Gris. No more boats can get into the ship canal because of the heavy seas.
SMALL CRAFT WRECKED Port Colborne, Ont., Nov. 10. - The storm of last night and to-day was the worst in years, and considerable damage was done along the lake front. The Canadian Furnace company's false work, used for constructing the ore bridges, is a total wreck. This part of the plant is under the McMyler Interstate company's contract, and their loss will be over $5,000. The steamer Canobia broke from her moorings at the dock and punched a hole in her bow. The steamer Imperoya: left here at 1 p.m on Sunday for Cleveland and reached Momawk light, out was forced by the heavy seas to return. Several small motorboats in the harbor were dashed to pieces. The government siding was entirely under water, and could not be used. To-night the storm has abated.
DAMAGE AT MEAFORD Meaford, Ont., Nov. 10. - Meaford was yesterday visited by a stiff, north-easterly wind, which did considerate damage. The pier on which the flashlight is situated has been undermined and has sunk considerably. while the new breakwater, built this year, has been badly wrecked. The government sweeping scow broke loose, also Alex. Kennedy's fishing tug, and are piled up under the Trowbridge street bridge, one abutment of which is very much undermined, while the barge Herman H. Pettler had every line broken, but was saved by running her nose in the mud and keeping the wheel going all night. The Reaman-Kent Lumber company had a large quantity of lumber swept off the breakwater, but it is recoverable, as it, floated up the river. Hail, sleet and snow accompanied the storm, and is piled up in places from 8 to 9 feet.

From the album Great Lakes Chronicle, by Lee Murdock
Time for a story… A ghost story… A true ghost story…
In 1874 The Chicago Board of Trade went aground in a squall in western Lake Erie. Her master, the captain — the crew called him “The Old Man” — a fellow named Jack Custer, rode his crew hard unlike most of the Great Lakes captains. And because of his reputation and some of the stories about what happened on board ship the insurance company decided to do an investigation which was inconclusive, but Jack Custer did not sail the lakes for a couple of years because of it.
Now you know as well as I that sailors as a rule are somewhat superstitious. (As a matter of fact, this folk singer is very superstitious. When I’m onboard ship, I don’t sing shipwreck songs.) And so, when something bad happens aboard ship many times the captain will have difficulty getting crew. That’s one of the things the insurance company did say, that he was sailing shorthanded. Perhaps that contributed to it.
At any rate, the ensuing story is part of the scuttlebutt that was going around the wharves. It was found in The Saginaw Bay Journal nine years later, in 1883, and I call it…
The Ghost of Red Monroe
Come all of you true sailor lads and likewise you landsmen, too And I’ll tell you of a strange event, you might not think it true On The Chicago Board of Trade, as handsome a craft as ever made I signed on Jack Custer’s crew
Now in those days the food was good but work aboard was tough We’d scuff down the boat on upbound trips and downbound we’d paint her up While loading in Chicago wheat consigned for Buffalo I met a red-haired Scotsman named Monroe
The whole trip down to Buffalo the Old Man rode the crew And he singled out for Red Monroe the toughest jobs to do But we unloaded our consignment and cast off for Cleveland town To take on a load of coal Milwaukee-bound.
When we cleared that Buffalo breaker with a short pull from the tug The wind died out completely, we sat there bobbing like a jug We dropped our anchor overside and rode Lake Erie’s flowing tide ’Til the hook set in the bottom nice and snug
With this delay the Captain called Red and two of us aft The top mast for to scrape down, and then the Old Man laughed Red gave his bosun’s chair a look and ‘round ragged ropes his fingers hooked, he said “I’ll bend a bit of rattan 'round this chair”
Now the skipper had been drinking and he turned on him and swore So Red climbed the main rig like a cat and proceeded with the chore With the halyards bent on to the chair he sung out to us, “Hoist away, there!” But I’ll ne’er forget the look that his face wore
We handled that line carefully for tender was the chair We hauled him up a-chock-a-block, a-hangin’ in the air Red, with his knife in one hand, leaned and reached for the back stay And it was then that bosun’s chair gave way
At first he fell all in a bunch ’til he struck the crosstrees Then he spread out like a leaf a-floating on the breeze He fell forward of the cabin to the deck, the starboard side In a heartbeat I was kneeling by his side
The Old Man hovered over him, a-swaying to-and-fro I was well choked up to see a shipmate laid out so I said, “This is bad business, sir!”; just then Red began to stir He raised his head and hissed these words out low:
“I curse the captain of this ship, his wife and children, too I curse The Chicago Board of Trade, her owners and her crew” And every word choked past his lips was stained red with blood as it dripped His head fell back and not another breath he drew
In three days we made Cleveland and a few men left us there With wages down though most stayed on to finish out their share While upbound through the rivers there were five ships in our tow And at Port Huron we encountered a big blow
Now that squall was too much for the tug and some fellow cast us off But he didn’t sing out to us first and we floundered in a trough We dropped our bowser, quick and sure, but drifted as the rain did pour And settled back into the schooner Moonlight, rough
The Moonlight lost her headgear and our lifeboat was smashed in two We were certainly a shaky lot with Huron in full view For there is nowhere a man can turn with no boat hanging from the stern And five hundred miles of water to plow through
Next morning though the winds were easterly and the skies fair that whole day By first watch of the evening we were just off Saginaw Bay I had the second trick at the wheel, the stars shone bright as eight bells pealed And every stitch of canvas set and swayed
The Captain climbed out to the deck as the last bell died away And some spray caught me in the face and took my breath away Then I saw it rise up slowly across the main from the starboard rail It was milk-white, transparent, like a veil
When it reached the gap and halyards it was there it seemed to stall Then it struck the crosstrees and spread out, like leaves in fall I glanced over to the captain who was watching it also We were witnessing the ghost of Red Monroe
Next thing I knew the ship and all abord were in the wind The main top mast and mizzen both were splintered in the din The square sail yard in pieces and booms were jibing o’er And the Old Man passed out face-down by the door
They got the head sails over while I spun the wheel about And we got her under control, although how I have some doubt For one glance at the binnacle what I saw took me aback For we were laying on our course a starboard tack
The remainder of that trip passed without incident at all And each crewman kept unto himself recalling that close call When we reached Milwaukee River and hove-to at the dockside It was there we left that ship where she was tied
My story’s nearly ended and you may not think it true But I swear to you I saw it all, you can ask Jack Custer, too For on The Chicago Board of Trade the ghost of Red Monroe has played And no true sailor would ever join her crew

“One of my favorite songs on the project was ‘The World Is Mine’ and I think that’s indicative of every young person that grew up here in Queensbridge, knowing that there’s no barriers, no obstacles to stop me from realizing that the world is mine,” Urban Upbound Co-founder Bishop Mitchell Taylor said.
