Playing the fantasy role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons with others has a positive impact on mental health, according to a new study. The researchers say that the game should be included as a therapeutic tool as part of a holistic approach to mental health. Maybe you’ve always been a Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) fan, or you got into the fantasy tabletop role-playing game after watching Stranger Things or during a COVID-19 lockdown. Regardless, if you play D&D, the odds are that you have better mental health because of it, according to a new study. While some clinical psychologists are already using D&D in therapeutic settings, two researchers from the School of Applied Psychology at University College Cork in Ireland sought to understand how the game bolstered players’ mental health. “This study found that D&D can bring a myriad of benefits for players,” said Dr Conor Linehan, the study’s senior author. “Although there are some clinicians and community groups that currently use role-playing games therapeutically, those groups are predominantly active in the United States. Our study suggests that a wider rolling out of such therapeutic role-playing groups may be of benefit in Ireland and across the globe, offering the great potential to support skills development, emotional exploration, problem-solving and foster meaningful social connection.”

#OTD in 2013 – Death of uilleann piper, accordion player, singer, composer, researcher, writer and lecturer, Tomás Ó Canainn.
The uileann piper was probably best known as a member of Na Filí, along with fiddler Matt Cranitch and whistle player Tom Barry, who brought Irish traditional music to an international audience in the 1970s. The Derry native was an engineering lecturer and in the early 1970s moved to work at University College Cork, where he also studied for a music degree with Seán Ó Riada as one of his…

University College Cork (UCC), Ireland: A Comprehensive Guide for International Students
University College Cork (UCC), located in the vibrant city of Cork, Ireland, is one of the leading universities in Europe. Known for its research-driven curriculum, UCC has built a global reputation for academic excellence. In this article, we will explore various aspects of the university, including the University College Cork Ireland, its world ranking, application fee, scholarships, acceptance rate, courses, accommodation, and opportunities for those wishing to study abroad.
Overview of University College Cork, Ireland
Founded in 1845, University College Cork Ireland has grown to become a globally recognized institution. UCC is a part of the National University of Ireland and holds a rich academic heritage. The university is renowned for offering a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs across various disciplines, including the sciences, arts, law, business, and engineering.
UCC is located in Cork, Ireland’s second-largest city, known for its historic architecture, welcoming community, and thriving student life. The campus itself is a blend of old and modern architecture, surrounded by lush green spaces, making it an ideal place for learning and living.
University College Cork Ranking
When it comes to global recognition, University College Cork ranking is among the top universities in Ireland and the world. According to the QS World University Rankings, UCC consistently ranks in the top 2% of universities globally, holding a position in the range of 200-300 worldwide. Its standing in various subject areas, including nursing, law, and environmental sciences, is particularly strong. The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings also places UCC among the top 350 universities globally, showcasing its excellence in both teaching and research.
UCC’s commitment to sustainability has earned it numerous accolades, including being recognized as one of the most environmentally friendly universities in the world.
University College Cork Application Fee
One of the important considerations for international students is the University College Cork application fee. The application process is straightforward and is conducted primarily online. For undergraduate programs, the application fee is typically around €45 for EU/EEA students and €50 for non-EU/EEA students. For postgraduate applications, the fee may vary depending on the program and the applicant’s nationality, but it generally ranges from €50 to €55. This fee is non-refundable and is a standard part of the application process.
University College Cork Scholarships
To ease the financial burden on students, there are numerous University College Cork scholarships available for both domestic and international students. UCC offers merit-based, need-based, and subject-specific scholarships, which can significantly reduce the cost of tuition.
Some of the popular scholarships include:
UCC Excellence Scholarships: These are awarded based on academic performance and cover up to 25% of tuition fees for undergraduate and postgraduate programs.
Government of Ireland Scholarships: This prestigious scholarship offers a full tuition waiver and a stipend to outstanding international students.
Sports Scholarships: UCC provides scholarships for students excelling in sports. These scholarships support students both financially and academically.
Research Scholarships: For postgraduate students, UCC offers several research grants and scholarships that cover tuition fees and provide stipends for living expenses.
In addition, many departments within UCC offer specific funding opportunities to students based on academic merit.
University College Cork Acceptance Rate
The University College Cork acceptance rate is a key concern for many prospective students. UCC is a moderately selective university with an acceptance rate of approximately 40-50%. This means that while UCC is open to a large number of applicants, it maintains high academic standards, especially for competitive programs.
For undergraduate programs, meeting the minimum academic entry requirements is necessary but not always sufficient due to high competition. Applicants to postgraduate programs typically need a strong academic background, along with relevant work or research experience for certain courses. For international students, UCC also requires proof of English language proficiency, with IELTS and TOEFL being widely accepted tests.
University College Cork Courses
University College Cork courses are designed to offer flexibility, innovation, and academic rigor. The university offers over 120 undergraduate programs and 200 postgraduate programs across a wide array of disciplines. Some of the most popular fields of study at UCC include:

Data Science: A rapidly growing field, UCC’s data science programs prepare students for careers in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and big data analysis.
The university also offers part-time and online courses for students seeking flexibility in their education.
University College Cork Accommodation
Securing comfortable and affordable University College Cork accommodation is a priority for international students. UCC provides a range of on-campus and off-campus housing options to suit different budgets and lifestyles.
On-Campus Accommodation
UCC’s on-campus residences include Victoria Lodge, Castlewhite Apartments, and Mardyke Hall, offering modern, well-equipped living spaces. On-campus accommodation is highly sought after, especially for first-year students, as it provides easy access to university facilities and fosters a strong sense of community.
Off-Campus Accommodation
For those who prefer to live off-campus, Cork City offers numerous housing options, including privately rented apartments and shared houses. UCC’s Accommodation Office assists students in finding suitable off-campus housing and provides advice on contracts, tenants’ rights, and budgeting.
The average cost of living in Cork, including rent, utilities, and other expenses, is generally lower than in Dublin, making Cork a more affordable choice for students.
Study Abroad Opportunities at UCC
University College Cork Ireland encourages students to broaden their horizons through study abroad programs. UCC has partnerships with over 300 universities worldwide, providing students with the opportunity to study in countries like the USA, Canada, Australia, China, and various European nations. These programs enable students to experience new cultures, enhance their language skills, and develop a global perspective.
Erasmus+ Program

Colleen Doran’s artwork in Snow, Glass, Apples is just stunning and I know she cites the Irish stained glass artist, Harry Clarke, as an inspiration. Just wondering if you’ve ever seen his work in person? If not, I highly recommend a visit to the Honan Chapel in University College Cork or the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork city.
I have, although my favourite Clarke windows are in the Ashdown House Hotel in Wych Cross, Sussex. (Which, when it was Banking corporate training offices, was part of my inspiration for Fawney Rig in Sandman.)

About Me, My Books, and My Research (2024 Edition)
Hi, I'm Finn, a writer, medievalist, and all-round nerd. You may know me as the author of The Butterfly Assassin, "that person who wrote the trans Cú Chulainn article", the weird nerd in the Tumblr corner writing excessively long and incomprehensibly niche posts about their research, or something else entirely. I am all of those things! (Well, depending on what the 'something else' is, anyway...)
Currently, I'm a PhD student at the University of Cambridge researching friendship in the late Ulster Cycle (c. 12th-17th centuries). I have an MA in Early and Medieval Irish from University College Cork, and wrote my thesis about Láeg mac Ríangabra, my best beloved. I also have an undergrad degree in Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic from Cambridge, and wrote my dissertation about queer readings of Táin Bó Cúailnge, including transmasculine readings of Cú Chulainn.
You can find out more about my research on my website, which also includes info about all of my academic publications. This includes the aforementioned "trans Cú Chulainn article", an article about Láeg in the Death of Cú Chulainn, an article about the seven Maines, and a discussion of a conference on Caoineadh Airt Uí Laoghaire from the perspective of my own work on lament and grief. Whenever possible, I try to make my research available Open Access. If you're ever having trouble finding one of my articles, please contact me!
If you want recommendations for books about medieval Irish (or Welsh) literature, this list on my Bookshop page has all my go-to recommendations. If you buy via this link, I earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, so this is a great way to support me.
I am also an author, and I write both YA and adult novels. Again, my website is the place to go for all the info and links, but a quick summary:
The Butterfly Assassin trilogy (The Butterfly Assassin, 2022; The Hummingbird Killer, 2023; Moth to a Flame, 2024): YA thrillers about a traumatised teenage assassin who is trying (and failing) to live a normal life in a fictional closed city in Yorkshire. Featuring friendship, street art, Esperanto, zero romance, and a whole lot of murder, as well as increasingly unsubtle commentary on the UK arms industry and the military recruitment of vulnerable teenagers.
The Wolf and His King (coming Spring 2025 from Gollancz): a queer retelling of 'Bisclavret' by Marie de France which uses werewolfism as a metaphor to explore chronic pain and illness. Also very much about yearning, exile, and the mortifying ordeal of being known.
The Animals We Became (coming 2026 from Gollancz): a queertrans retelling of the Fourth Branch of the Mabinogi looking at gender, compulsory heterosexuality, and trauma, through the medium of nonconsensual animal transformations.
To Run With The Hound (coming 2027 from Gollancz): my take on the Ulster Cycle, looking at why Táin Bó Cúailnge is a tragedy and what it means to be doomed by the narrative, but not in the way you thought you were. Featuring a lot of feelings about Cú Chulainn, Fer Diad, and Láeg.
You can find out more about my recently-announced medieval retellings in this blog post.
I generally tag personal posts and selfies as “#about the author”; other than that, I think I’m pretty straightforward with my tagging system.
I’m very happy to answer questions about medieval Irish lit, my research, or my books, or just generally to chat. Send questions via asks, chat via DMs, and if you're looking for my articles, you can email me at finn [at] finnlongman [dot] com, which is also the best way to contact me for professional enquiries, whether academic or fiction related.
You can also find me on Bluesky, on Instagram, and on YouTube, where I (infrequently) retell medieval Irish stories for a general audience with lots of sarcasm and hand gestures. Technically I'm still on Twitter, but I'm trying to leave.
And finally, if you’ve found my research interesting or just generally want to support me, I have a tip jar and am always immensely grateful when somebody helps me to fund my book-buying habits: http://ko-fi.com/fianaigecht. You can also tip me directly on Tumblr if you like. I’m also a Bookshop affiliate, and you can buy books from my recommendation lists to support me and get some great reads at the same time.

Attention American Viewers:
Lost Painting:
This lithograph was published in The Ulster Journal of Archaeology in 1856. It is based off a portrait of Owen Roe O’ Neill (Eoghan Ruadh Ó Néill) which is believed to have been painted before his death in 1649. The original painting was sold to an unrecorded buyer in America in about 1884, and its current location is unknown. The portrait is of great value to the cultural history of Ireland. In it, O' Neill wears a bairéad (Irish flat cap) and brat (shaggy Irish mantle), making it a rare, detailed portrayal 17th c. Irish dress.
Dr. Hiram Morgan of University College Cork is looking for the original painting. If anyone knows where it is, please email him at [email protected]. (More info) (Also, please send me a photo of it.)
The original portrait is an oil painting on wood and is approximately 12 in x 16 in (30 cm x 40 cm). According to the 1856 description of the painting, "The colour of the hair [. . .] is not decidedly red, but only approaching to it. The tinge of redness, however, is quite sufficient to have distinguished him amongst a number of dark-haired men; and the complexion is clear and ruddy." A partially illegible text on the back of the painting reads, "Owen Roe O’Neill at the Court of [. . .] by the celebrated Dutch artist, Van Brugens".
The Ulster Journal states that the lithograph was "faithfully copied" from the painting, but if it really is an early 17th c. Dutch painting, I doubt the lithograph is an exact copy of it. 17th c. Dutch paintings tend to fill the whole canvas. They don't fade out at the edges.
A 1645 portrait by Dutch artist Bartholomeus van der Helst. Notice how the lace on her sleeves continues all the way to the bottom edge of the canvas.
If we had the original painting, it might show us more details of the garment O' Neill is wearing under his brat.
There is also a color print of this portrait by John D. Reigh. It was originally published in 1888 and was probably made after the original painting left Ireland.
I would guess the Reigh version is less accurate to the original than the Ulster Journal version. In the Ulster Journal version, O' Neill's face looks more like a distinct individual, whereas, in Reigh's version, O' Neill looks more like a generic manly man. 17th c. Dutch portrait painters tended to excel at capturing distinct individual detail, as seen in the van der Helst example above. I'm not an art expert though.
Keep an eye out, people in America. Owen Roe O’ Neill might be hiding in an attic or antique shop somewhere in the US.

Robert Boyle
Robert Boyle (1627-1691) was an Anglo-Irish chemist, physicist, and experimental philosopher. Boyle was a prolific author, made significant experiments with air pumps, and presented the first litmus test. A founding member of the Royal Society, Boyle bequeathed funding for a long-lasting series of lectures, the Boyle Lectures, which aimed to show that the Christian faith and science were not incompatible.
Early Life
Robert Boyle was born on 25 January 1627 in Ireland. His father was Richard Boyle (1566-1643), the English landowner who later became the Earl of Cork. Robert was privately educated and then attended Eton College, but unusually for a leading figure of the Scientific Revolution, he did not study at a university. Boyle's education was rounded out by conducting a grand tour of Europe between 1639 and 1642, taking private lessons along the way with a tutor in tow. Robert lived in a manor house in Stalbridge, Dorset, in southern England from 1644, which was paid for by his father. In the mid-1650s, he moved to Oxford. In 1668, Boyle moved again, this time to Pall Mall in London, where he shared a home with his beloved sister Katherine.

Prologue
Pairings: Danny Wagner X Sam Kiszka (eventually) ***slash
Warnings and tags: For this part none, but this story as per my usual content is 18+ only, no minors need been reading. Overall themes will be heavy rivalry, bit of enemies to lovers, probably some smut at the end, college AU, tennis team AU, I’ll update warnings with each part
Word count: ~700
“Here are the locker rooms. I think there’s still one open locker on the top row, you can have it since you’re tall. We can make a label with your name for it, but I’d invest in a lock too. Even though most of the guys here are cool I wouldn’t risk it you know”.
Danny nodded his head in understanding as he continued to follow the club president around. Although this was already his second week at the new university, he had missed the last practice for some other enrollment activities, so he’d made it a point to arrive early today and was greeted warmly with a quick tour before the others started to arrive.
“I noticed there’s only a few courts out there. How many players do we have on the team?” Danny questioned, making sure to stay involved in the tour so that he came off as genuinely interested.
The club president, Adam as he had introduced himself to Danny earlier, ushered him along to the opposite wall of the locker room which contained a large cork board full of fliers and notices. “The team has three groups. Junior varsity, they practice on Tuesdays” he pointed at one of the papers with a list of names on it.
“Varsity is larger, so it’s split into two. We practice on Wednesday and Thursday, team A and team B respectively, and on Fridays coach trains one on one”. His finger shifted to the next paper which contained two columns. All of the names were written in pencil, and Danny could tell a few of them towards the bottom had been erased and rewritten a few times.
“Is there a system to who ends up with which group, or is it just random?” Danny looked over the list, finding his name freshly written in on the paper under the column which read Team B.
Adam chuckled, like he was in on some joke Danny was currently unaware of. “Yeah, there is. We call these the ladder. You’re at the bottom now because you’re new. To climb the ladder you have to challenge the other players to matches. So if you want to move up a rank,” he glanced at the page quickly, noticing the name written just above Danny’s, “you have to play a challenge match against Zach. If you win, you take Zach’s place and if you lose then you both stay where you’re at. Once you’ve climbed the ladder on Team B then you can start practicing with Team A”.
Danny examined the page once more, counting all the names that were listed before his. Eleven. “Do you have to go in order? Or can I just challenge whoever I want and take their spot?”
“You climb a ladder one step at a time buddy” Adam laughed harder, clapping Danny on the shoulder like he was wishing him all the best of luck. “Oh, and to make it official there has to be a witness to your challenge match. If you don’t get one then it doesn’t count. I can help you out with the first few matches since I’m not busy right now, but soon you’ll need to start making some acquaintances on the team”.
“How early are you available?” Danny continued to ask questions, already clearing his own schedule in his mind. “Can we set something up for this weekend? Say Saturday afternoon?”
“Sure, I’ll let Zach know, make sure he’s game” Adam replied, crossing his arms over his chest with a smile. He was impressed by Danny’s up and get ‘em attitude, already able to tell it was going to be a real pleasure to have him on the team.
“Zach and Dylan” Danny added the guy on the ladder above Zach as well. “I’ll play them both”.
“Two challenge matches in one day? You sure you’re up for that?”
“Have to be” Danny assured him, “if I’m going to be at that number 1 spot by the end of the month”.
He looked at the ladder for Team A one last time before getting ready for practice, familiarizing himself with his goal, the name at the very top of the list clear as day like it had been written there once and never moved.
Sam Kiszka.

L: Lycanthropy AU seventeen moons by we_built_the_shadows_here [snily, G, 6k] “The scar is small, at least,” Pomfrey says, pulling the bandage snug around the cleaned wound. There’s a pity in her voice that makes Severus want to throw up again. “It will be easily covered.” Dumbledore catches him inspecting it, as if mesmerized. “You are lucky to have survived at all,” the Headmaster says. Severus does not say I don’t feel very lucky because it is stupid and obvious. Instead, he says unsteadily, “I want to press charges, sir.” Pomfrey stills, tightening the bandage to the point of discomfort. “Remus Lupin would be executed,” Dumbledore says. “The Ministry takes a dim view of werewolves who infect other wizards.”
M: Musician AU Bubblegum Blues by reachthetree [wolfstar, M, 5k] Remus actually looks down as she smiles, like a shy teenager in a first kiss scenario, and it gives Sirius deja vu. She’s lived this exact moment before. Only in another life. When Remus lifts the bass, Sirius sees a tattoo on the back of her upper arm, and drops her little notebook on the sticky floor. She’s only known one other person with a tattoo like that. But it can’t be… Can it?
N: No Voldemort AU Sing Me a (Christmas) Love Song by andromedablacc [James/Sirius, G, 1k] James is a famous Quidditch player, and once upon a time Sirius was famous in his own right.
O: Office AU Of Tinsel and Nice Starts by nerakrose [wolfstar, G, 2k] Mysterious clouds and strange coffee abounds. Office romance.

Q: Quidditch Player AU our kiss is as the moon to draw by blackkat [lily/narcissa, T, 1k] “Problems, cousin?” Narcissa calls to Sirius, cool and sugar-sweet. She’s smirking, braid of pale hair coming loose, and Lily should absolutely be cheering for Gryffindor, but she can't help herself. As Narcissa turns into a sharp dive, snatching the Quaffle right out of James's hands as she passes, she whoops, clapping her hands together. “I think this is the part where I'm supposed to call you a traitor,” Remus observes from the seat beside her, as dry as dust, though he hasn’t even lifted his gaze from his book.
R: Receptionist AU They don't love you like I love you by moonlightgalleon [wolfstar, G, 5k] Hospital receptionist Remus Lupin usually invites superheroes as guests for the kids. That is, until he gets the unusual request of inviting villain The Canis.

Whether this be from Dementors on a Quidditch pitch or the tasks of a life-threatening tournament, he's determined to help him. He can't help but worry about the younger boy. Eventually friendship takes root and potentially…something more? Harry feels drawn to Cedric, safe when he is near. He certainly has no shortage of dangers in his life, from an abusive home life to the growing threat of Voldemort. He cant help the guilt that he puts Cedric in danger by proximity. Eventually friendship takes root and potentially…could he hope for something more? And when the end of the third task goes horribly wrong, will either of them survive? A rewrite of Book 4 revolving around Harry and Cedric.
T: Time Travel AU Escaping the Paradox by Meri [snarry, E, 35k] After Harry is thrown back in time to 1971, he has several choices to make. (also available as a podfic)
U: Undercover AU The Chosen One & The Halfblood Prince by waitingondaisies [Harry & Severus, T, 93k] Severus Snape was discovered as a spy mere days before the start of the school year. Thankfully, Albus had been working on a vague contingency plan for this possibility. It had been inspired by the question, “What would it take for Severus Snape to see that he was wrong about Harry Potter?” The answer? Force Severus to go undercover as Alfonse “Eli” Hopkirk, a sixth year Gryffindor.
