Pathologic 2 contains a set of 8 photorealistic book exterior textures, used decoratively in locations like the Stillwater. I tracked these down. Two are artist-made stock images, one is a wholesaler's retail image, and the rest are historical books with their titles filed off. Part of getting this to work is letter thickness, part of this is text size, and part of this is making sure that color contrast distinguishes the text from the background. If you're struggling with contrast, slap an outline around the text. Even a really thin one can work wonders.

This is pertaining to your Imaginary Books asks.

So, the title would be as follows: Sasha, Did You Know? The genre: Crime & Mystery.

I think I'll leave the sub-genre up to you (detective mysteries, whodunnit, noir fiction, etc), because I don't want limited creative space.

Sasha, Did You Know? by Rachel Lloyd is one of the most delightful mysteries I've ever read. Certainly the quirkiest. It really shouldn't work, especially in print, but somehow it does. This mystery introduces us to Jackie Bevan, a puppeteer who works with a theater company that puts on all kinds of almost vaudeville-type productions. We get to see the dynamics among this wild community of creatives, get invested in her relationships with them, until this seems almost like an ensemble comedy rather than a mystery--and then one of her friends is murdered. The police, as per usual, try to write this off as an accident (especially since the theater isn't exactly up to all the finest safety standards) but Jackie knows there's something more sinister behind this, and is determined to see justice done.

Since everyone else is either too dismissive or too busy to join her quest, she uses her puppets as her Watsons, each personality giving her different perspectives to bounce ideas off of. Her most helpful partner for this case turns out to be Sasha, an outspoken, somewhat-pretentious anthropomorphic dog who wants this case wrapped up so she can get back to her usual preoccupation--herself. The "two" of them turn out to be a pretty good team, especially as they manage to get evidence from the wild team of characters that surround Jackie. It's a conceit that absolutely should not work without visuals, but somehow, for me at least, it really does, and it's kind of delightful. The mystery is pretty darn solid, too, so between the well-constructed plot and the vivid characters, I hope that Jackie and her puppets can eventually headline a long-running series of mysteries.

My Christmas wish is that I want "science" authors to stop using really interesting subjects that I'd like to learn about as nothing but a veneer to trick people into reading a book that is really just about their own "personal journeys."

XUE YU (薛妤) - SAINTESS & CROWN PRINCESS OF YEDU, SECOND OF SIX HOLY REALMS - A-Yu, to her companions, Dianxia / Nulang to her attendants, Yu Yu to those who love her most

There was a time when Xue Yu was nothing more than a careless little girl, held up in the palms of her father's hands like a treasure, a child that need not see storms or anything but peace and freedom in her life. That was before her father became the ruler of Yedu after his brother's unexpected death, and she became the heiress to the holy realm. Yedu is the second of six holy realms, one of three forces (mortal, immortal and demon) in the known world tasked with the persecution of evil - specifically the jurisdictions over crimes committed by those that cultivated or else had some supernatural power. The little girl grew up in an instant - she was a princess, a future empress, and on her shoulders were the lives of not just the people of Yedu but that of every living creature in the holy realms, the mortal realm, the demon realms and otherwise. She was very aware of her duty, very aware of what she needed to become.

Xue Yu was already clever, and she became powerful quickly. As an immortal focusing cultivation toward spiritual arrays, her physical body was naturally weaker - but she continued to throw herself headfirst into difficult challenges and forcefully trained her body to heal without the use of elixirs. Regardless of the labeled difficulty level, she took missions from the fate book, an extension of universal destiny that rewarded completion of such missions to the various Holy Realms and their participants. She developed her own standing in her father's court and began to deal with affairs of Yedu on top of that, frequently as its representative. She never spoke of her difficulties to anyone, nor usually asked for any help, preferring to grit her teeth through pain and exhaustion and aiming to become a dependable and efficient ruler. By the time she became a young woman, her peers and her hand-picked attendants, bar few, could really keep up with her in cultivation or the lightning way she settled affairs.

Though she doesn't believe herself to be a particularly sympathetic or merciful goddess, Xue Yu believed in trying to understand all the circumstances of a case. That is, after all - her job. She also, while knowing the world could not be that way, acts as much as she could to exchange kindness for kindness and sincerity for sincerity. She is a bit wooden, however - a bit distant, a bit removed, a bit cool, a lot blunt - someone people did not instinctively want to gravitate toward or found likeable. She spent most of her time on work and cultivation and rarely had time for much else.

Despite her status as an immortal and a cultivator of the "righteous" path - Xue Yu did not hate demons, fae, or any other immortal being that fell under her jurisdiction and the jurisdiction of the holy realms. She didn't see differences as evils or distinguish "sides" between the different creatures of the world, seeking to persecute wrong and injustice, and that only. She could not preside over mortals, cultivators or not, as that power belonged solely to mortal kings - but she doesn't take kindly to the oppression of innocent demons either, dealing punishment to immortals who have done such a thing. Her own entourage is made up of an eclectic mix of attendants, some of whom she collects when she runs into them on her missions out to the mortal world. It makes her unpopular amongst her peers, a great portion of whom have their prejudices set already.

In the previous life, a mortal cultivator she pardoned from the stand of judgment of Yihe, first of the holy realms, became the king of immortals after her help teaching, honing talents and raising him up. They cared for each other - and then he betrayed her, but worse than that - betrayed her ideals, used the life and powers he obtained with her help to seal away the Demon Realm and its hundreds of thousands of inhabitants away forever. In trying to defeat him so that she might break the seal open, she accidentally triggers the fate book, which sends them backwards in time to a point prior to their first meeting. Betrayal is a crime against her own person that she couldn't forgive. This time she does not pardon him but a different prisoner. Someone else does, however, and determined to stop the mortal cultivator and keep him from the path he claims is right, she starts her life over again.

In writing a scene from the novel I’m working on, I have Jeff the Giant Spider Farmer. Jeff is a drow who lives in the depths of a chasm called the Abyss. Because of the eternal darkness where he lives, his family (along with others) have no eyes, instead, echolocating. Jeff has a large stick, which was given to him by one of his giant spiders, who now bring him all sticks they find. Jeff takes the baby spiders on walks twice a day. He traverses the paths, chirping to find his way, and is followed by a horde of at least 100 spiders the size of cats. Jeff has a good life. His home is build of the sticks he was given. He has a tree, as well- his druid daughter’s senior project- (giant spider dung is excellent fertilizer). Jeff appears exactly once in the book. He is never named. He is the spider farmer who shepherds baby spiders around the darkness.

Jeff, I immortalize you forever in the void of the internet. May you lead your spiderlings bravely through Tumblr, chirping your way.

While it's on the mind, here's my wings of fire designs too. Not as much of a brainrot but still fun. Bad take or am I cooking with some of them? Let me know in the comments. Here's some (too many) notes:

I really liked the original designs when I first read these books, but I wanted to try my hand at uhh changing them a little. Mainly making them more distinct from each other (even if this irreversibly breaks canon XD)

-Sandwings live in a mixed savannah and desert habitat and have bodies adapted for resource scarcity, effective hunting, and heat dispersion. They have large ears to help cool off and listen for stuff. They can fly, but pretty weakly in comparison to some others, mainly using flight to navigate their large territories , get onto cliffs, and scan for prey. They typically climb up somewhere and then jump off. They are built like felines, and use a solo stalk and rushdown hunting approach coupled with a sting instakill. They live in family groups, with a ‘queen’ title going to the alpha female 💪 and everyone else hunting and living together. They are immune to their own venom, which acts very similarly to a scorpion’s but in a massive dose, causing numbness, breathing difficulties seizures, and eventually death. It takes time for them to make more once they’ve expended the dose, so they rarely use it outside of hunting or life/death situations (though the prospect of being stung is very scary to everyone else, and they will instinctively raise their tail when startled or threatened)

-Skywings live in high mountainous and forested areas, with some living in the lowlands. They are powerful flyers and very acrobatic due to their tail, though this comes at the expense of their agility on land and the strength of their non wing arms. They have long legs with powerful talons for grasping prey midair or snatching them from off the ground. They hunt and live alone unless they have a partner. Communities are made up of a loose group of related individuals who rarely collect in one place at once(queendom structure are a more recent and ‘unnatural’ thing for them, but very useful for organizing military efforts and empire building). They stay aloft for long periods of time and usually only land on their cliff homes. They need a sprint or a takeoff point to get flying, though. Unlike every other tribe, they have a noticeable difference between male and female (being a nose horn and red face for males.) males are prized for these features, and having a pretty husband is seen as an attractive trait for a queen.

-Seawings live along the coast. They normally only venture out of the water for trade and other resources, since they can get everything else they need underwater. Their large neck houses gills protected by thick pads that will close when on land, while their lungs are in their mid chest. Primarily adapted to swimming, they have very strong tails and webbed fingers and toes. They will also use their wings to steer and paddle, as well as manipulate things their other arms can’t reach. They will hunt in packs, corralling fish and other animals into a kill zone. They are very clumsy on land and in the air with their short limbs and weak wings. Their bioluminescent spots can be flashed for communication, and compared to the other tribes they have pretty poor vocal ability (due to the gills in their neck getting in the way) and will supplement with other spot/sign signals. Every individual has unique spots, though their glowing ones come in consistent numbers, sizes, patterns, and places on their body so they can use them for common language across their group. However, Different groups from different parts of the ocean have different numbers of spots in different areas, making cross communication via only spots difficult. Their whiskers help navigate in close or dark areas, and are seen as a status symbol.

-Mudwings live in warmer areas, specifically marshes and other wetlands (though sometimes in some forested areas too). Their thick armor helps protect them from other mudwings/competition, while also acting as an insulator that allows them to easily venture a wider range than other tribes from warm climates. Physically, they are the strongest and bulkiest. They typically use the element of surprise and their overwhelming size and strength to take down large prey. However, unlike other tribes they tend to eat more plants too due to their large size (all of them are technically omnivores, but meat makes up the dominant part of their diet because of their energy needs and their ancestors). They are also the poorest flyers out of the bunch, having sacrificed that for size and strength, though they can do short bursts similar to a chicken to get to hard to reach areas or to surprise attack prey faster than them, they’re similar to hippos and are adapted to living in the water too, using powerful webbed arms to propel themselves and dig through the mud, and their large lung capacity to stay submerged and hidden for long periods. Their nostrils, ears, and eyes are located near the top of their head, which also gives more room for Tusks. They use these to root around occasionally defend themselves. Tusk maintenance and appearance is very important to them. They live in large groups of families in the same area and have more communal social standards than other tribes.

-Rainwings live in tropical areas and have a very small habitat range. This has caused them to look and act very different than most tribes, leading to poor perception of them. They use their long claws, strong grasping fingers, and prehensile tail to climb around, and are pretty much arboreal. They have wings meant for quick takeoffs and flight in dense areas, and are pretty agile and swift. They and aren’t that great at sustained flight or dealing with high altitudes and winds though . Their frill is delicate and used for emoting (probably originally for mating purposes) Their skin is packed with chromatophores that they can use to match their surroundings, and they have loose ridges in their skin that they can raise to enhance the effect. Their skin is constantly changing color due to their brain activity, though they have set patterns/colors for emotions and communication. They can also choose to focus on organizing their skin patterns to get coordinated colors and patterns, since normally it’s pretty disorganized. They eat a lot more plants due to their environment and due to social standards, but arent herbivores. They have the ability to spit acid out of hollow retractable fangs, and use precise shots of this coupled with their camouflage ability to get prey. They can also spray it at higher velocities for defense and offense, though this expends their supply much quicker. They don’t recognize a queen in their communities and are fairly disorganized into different cooperative groups.

-Nightwings are the result of a group that split off onto an island, though the volcanic activity on their original island escalated to the point where they had to emigrate. They are great fliers, using their wings and tail extensions to travel great distances to track prey and ambush from above. When on land, they aren’t particularly fast or strong, and instead are built for persistence. Their hunting tactic involves getting an initial bite onto prey, then waiting for it to succumb to infection. Their spines, horns, muscles, and talons are mainly for defending their kill from other Nightwings rather than hunting it in the first place. As a result of this competition, they aren’t naturally very social like other tribes, They are mainly nocturnal.

-Icewings live in the colder tundras and snowy forest environments. They are pack hunters, using their speed and persistence to take down prey, similar to wolves. Their long overlapping scales help them trap heat and survive in the cold, and while the guy i drew here is pretty skinny they also store fat much more readily than other tribes. Their bowed wings are mainly used to swoop in in prey, and like falcons they often take steep dives to grapple it. Their antlers only grow in at a certain time in the year, but royalty will wear embellished artificial ones in the meantime.

Lagoon by Nnedi Okorafor

The Scourge Between Stars by Ness Brown

Novella. After having failed at establishing a new colony, starship Calypso fights to make it back to Earth. Acting captain Jacklyn Albright is already struggling against the threats of interstellar space and impending starvation when the ship throws her a new danger: something is hiding on the ship, picking off her crew one by one in bloody, gruesome ways. A quick, excellent read if you want some good Alien vibes.

Dawn (Xenogenesis trilogy) by Octavia E. Butler*

After a devestating war leaves humanity on the brink of extinction, survivor Lilith finds herself waking up naked and alone in a strange room. She’s been rescued by the Oankali, who have arrived just in time to save the human race. But there’s a price to survival, and it might be humanity itself. Absolutely fucked up I love it I once had to drop the book mid read to stare at the ceiling and exclaim in horror at what was going on. Includes darker examinations of agency and consent, so enter with caution.

Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson*

Utterly unique in world-building, story, and prose, Midnight Robber follows young Tan-Tan and her father, inhabitants of the Carribean-colonized planet of Toussaint. When her father commits a terrible crime, he’s exiled to a parallel version of the same planet, home to strange aliens and other human exiles. Tan-Tan, not wanting to lose her father, follows with him. Trapped on this new planet, he becomes her worst nightmare. Enter this book with caution, as it contains graphic child sexual abuse.

Rosewater (The Wormwood trilogy) by Tade Thompson

In Nigeria lies Rosewater, a city bordering on a strange, alien biodome. Its motives are unknown, but it’s having an undeniable effect on the surrounding life. Kaaro, former criminal and current psychic agent for the government, is one of the people changed by it. When other psychics like him begin getting killed, Kaaro must take it upon himself to find out the truth about the biodome and its intentions.

Do You Dream of Terra-Two? by Temi Oh

Young adult. A century ago, an astronomer discovered a possibly Earth-like planet. Now, a team of veteran astronauts and carefully chosen teenagers are preparing to embark on a twenty-three year trip to get there. But space is dangerous, and the team has no one to rely on but each other if - or when - something goes wrong. An introspective slowburn of a story, this focuses more on character work than action.

The Best of All Possible Worlds by Karen Lord

After the planet Sadira is left uninhabitable, its few survivors are forced to move to a new world. On Cygnus Beta, they work to rebuild their society alongside their distant relatives of the planet, while trying to preserve what remains of their culture. Focused less on hard science or action, The Best of All Possible Worlds is more about culture, romance and the ethics and practicalities of telepathy.

Mirage (Mirage duology) by Somaiya Daud

Young adult. Eighteen-year-old Amani lives on an isolated moon under the oppressive occupation of the Valthek empire. When Amani is abducted, she finds herself someplace wholly unexpected: the royal palace. As it turns out, she's nearly identical to the half-Valthek, and widely hated, princess Maram, who is in need of a body double. If Amani ever wants to make it back home or see her people freed from oppression, she will have to play her role as princess perfectly. While sci-fi, this one more has the vibe of a fantasy.

An Unkindness of Ghosts by Rivers Solomon

Life on the lower decks of the generation ship HSS Matilda is hard for Aster, an outcast even among outcasts, trying to survive in a system not dissimilar to the old antebellum South. The ship’s leaders have imposed harsh restrictions on their darker skinned people, using them as an oppressed work force as they travel toward their supposed Promised Land. But as Aster finds a link between the death of the ship’s sovereign and the suicide of her own mother, she realizes there may be a way off the ship.

Where It Rains in Color by Denise Crittendon

The planet Swazembi is a utopia of color and beauty, the most beautiful of all its citizens being the Rare Indigo. Lileala was just named Rare Indigo, but her strict yet pampered life gets upended when her beautiful skin is struck by a mysterious sickness, leaving it covered in scars and scabs. Meanwhile, voices start to whisper in Lileala's mind, bringing to the surface a past long forgotten involving her entire society.

Eacaping Exodus (Escaping Exodus duology) by Nicky Drayden

Seske is the heir to the leader of a clan living inside a gigantic, spacefaring beast, of which they frequently need to catch a new one to reside in as their presence slowly kills the beast from the inside. While I found the ending rushed with regards to plot and character, the worldbuilding is very fresh and the overall plot of survival and class struggle an interesting one. It’s also sapphic!

Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah*

In a near future America, inmates on death row or with life sentences in private prisons can choose to participate in death matches for entertainment. If they survive long enough - a rare case indeed - they regain their freedom. Among these prisoners are Loretta Thurwar and Hamara "Hurricane Staxxx" Stacker, partners behind the scenes and close to the deadline of a possible release - if only they can survive for long enough. As the game continues to be stacked against them and protests mount outside, two women fight for love, freedom, and their own humanity. Chain-Gang All-Stars is bleak and unflinching as well as genuinely hopeful in its portrayal of a dark but all to real possible future.

Parable of the Sower (Earthseed duology) by Octavia E. Butler*

In a bleak future, Lauren Olamina lives with her family in a gated community, one of few still safe places in a time of chaos. When her community falls, Lauren is forced on the run. As she makes her way toward possible safety, she picks up a following of other refugees, and sows the seeds of a new ideology which may one day be the saviour of mankind. Very bleak and scarily realistic, Parable of the Sower will make you both fear for mankind and regain your hope for humanity.

Binti (Binti trilogy) by Nnedi Okorafor

Young adult novella. Binti is the first of the Himba people to be accepted into the prestigious Oomza University, the finest place of higher learning in all the galaxy. But as she embarks on her interstellar journey, the unthinkable happens: her ship is attacked by the terrifying Meduse, an alien race at war with Oomza University.

War Girls (War Girls duology) by Tochi Onyebuchi

In an enviromentally fraught future, the Nigerian civil war has flared back up, utilizing cybernetics and mechs to enhance its soldiers. Two sisters, by bond if not by blood, are separated and end up on differing sides of the struggle. Brutal and dark, with themes of dehumanization of soldiers through cybernetics that turn them into weapons, and the effect and trauma this has on them.

The Space Between Worlds (The Space Between Worlds duology) by Micaiah Johnson

Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s a catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying. As such she has a very special job in traveling to these worlds, hoping to keep her position long enough to gain citizenship in the walled-off Wiley City, away from the wastes where she grew up. But her job is dangerous, especially when she gets on the tracks of a secret that threatens the entire multiverse. Really cool worldbuilding and characters, also featuring a sapphic lead!

The Fifth Season (The Broken Eart trilogy) by N.K. Jemisin*

In a world regularly torn apart by natural disasters, a big one finally strikes and society as we know it falls, leaving people floundering to survive in a post apocalyptic world, its secrets and past to be slowly revealed. We get to follow a mother as she races through this world to find and save her missing daughter. While mostly fantasy in genre, this series does have some sci-fi flavor, and is genuinely some of the best books I've ever read, please read them.

The Women Could Fly by Megan Giddings*

In an alternate version of our present, the witch hunt never ended. Women are constantly watched and expected to marry young so their husbands can keep an eye on them. When she was fourteen, Josephine's mother disappeared, leveling suspicions at both mother and daughter of possible witchcraft. Now, nearly a decade and a half later, Jo, in trying to finally accept her missing mother as dead, decides to follow up on a set of seemingly nonsensical instructions left in her will. Features a bisexual lead!

The Prey of Gods by Nicky Drayden

South African-set scifi featuring gods ancient and new, robots finding sentience, dik-diks, and a gay teen with mind control abilities. An ancient goddess seeks to return to her true power no matter how many humans she has to sacrifice to get there. A little bit all over the place but very creative and fresh.

The Summer Prince by Alaya Dawn Johnson*

Young adult. Young artist June Costa lives in Palmares Tres, a beautiful, matriarchal city relying heavily on tradition, one of which is the Summer King. The most recent Summer King is Enki, a bold boy and fellow artist. With him at her side, June seeks to finally find fame and recognition through her art, breaking through the generational divide of her home. But growing close to Enki is dangerous, because he, like all Summer Kings, is destined to die.

The Blood Trials (The Blood Gifted duology) by N.E. Davenport

After Ikenna's grandfather is assasinated, she is convinced that only a member of the Praetorian guard, elite soldiers, could’ve killed him. Seeking to uncover his killer, Ikenna enrolls in a dangerous trial to join the Praetorians which only a quarter of applicants survive. For Ikenna, the stakes are even higher, as she's hiding forbidden blood magic which could cost her her life. Mix of fantasy and sci-fi. While I didn’t super vibe with this one, I suspect fans of action packed romantasy will enjoy it.

Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delany
