Former capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate, and flourishing centre of the spice trade as well as the Indian Ocean slave trade in the 19th century, it retained its importance as the main city of Zanzibar during the period of the British protectorate.

Round 1, part 2, match 1: colobus monkeys
Mantled guereza (Colobus guereza)
Tumblr media
These stunning monkeys live in the forests of central Africa. They are well adapted for eating leaves, but will also eat fruit, wood, insects, and soil. Like howler monkeys of South America, guerezas will create a roaring dawn chorus that can be heard from a surprisingly long way away.

Exploring Zanzibar at its Fullest With
Maru Maru Hospitality
On the historic island of Zanzibar, amidst the quaint, narrow alleys of Stone Town is Maru Maru Hotel, once a townhouse now boasts 51 well laid rooms.
Upon arrival, we were greeted at the airport by a friendly driver and refreshed with a cool, scented towel to mark the beginning of a wonderful holiday. The hotel reception is welcoming with aquamarine walls and eye-catching paintings.
Maru Maru Hotel constitutes of two wings – the Classic Wing with 11 rooms, which have undergone restoration, and the New Wing with 33 modern rooms built around a small courtyard with a star shaped fountain. The courtyard is ideal to spend time quietly reading, the noise of the water in fountain a soothing backdrop. On the way to the courtyard there is a coffee shop which also serves freshly baked pastries and cakes just in case you wanted to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea whilst rewinding.
The rooms are well equipped with modern amenities, a comfortable bed in Zanzibari style, swathed in mosquito net, which is not only essential but also creates a romantic atmosphere with the stained glass shades. Bathrooms are clean and complete with fresh towels and complimentary toiletries. The water available in the Bathrooms is freshly desalinated in the hotel’s own Reverse Osmosis desalination plant which ensures that the salinity level of the water is negligible.
An elevator connects both wings to the rooftop terrace, which is a delightful place to be, largely because of the stunning view of the ocean, so you can witness the gentle traffic of dhows, a vista that’s barely changed in generations.
Climbing the flight of wooden stairs leading to the terrace restaurant and reflecting on the hotel’s personality, it’s evident why Maru Maru has been the preferred property for eminent personalities like Bill Clinton and daughter, Chelsea.  And it wasn’t just the atmosphere that struck me, the scent of the place did too: the hotel smells wonderful as day-long diffusers burn perfumed essential oils.
Maru Maru serves a delightful variety of cuisines especially Continental and Asian – quality is great and portions generous. I especially loved the way an array of sauces was offered which you could blend with the main ingredient – poultry, meat, seafood or vegetables.
All the staff right - from the General Manager, receptionist, chefs –lead and supporting roles were super friendly and helpful.  Services and requests were promptly addressed.
So if you’re after an affordable Stone Town break – Maru Maru is a great option and delivers the perfect launch pad from where to explore this historic little place.

Mashabiki wa lugha hawa.
Wajerumani wakiongea Kiswahili kama wenyewe.
Kiswahili kimesambaa kweli.

Here are some famous places in Zanzibar that you can't miss.
1. The town of Stone Town:
The heart and soul of Zanzibar is Stone Town. This old town is a tangle of winding alleyways, dilapidated houses, and vibrant markets. The historic fort, the Sultan's Palace, and the House of Wonders are all open for visits. A blend of African, Arab, Indian, and European influences may be seen in this building's architecture. Enjoy local cuisine and take in the sunset over the Indian Ocean at the Forodhani Gardens night market, which is not to be missed.
2. Beach Nungwi:
Situated on Zanzibar's northern coast, Nungwi Beach is well-known for its gorgeous white sands and crystal-clear turquoise waters. It's the ideal location for snorkeling, swimming, and tanning. Along with its lively nightlife, the beach is well-known for its abundance of bars and restaurants that serve up fresh seafood and live music. For up-close views of sea turtles, you may also go to the Nungwi Mnarani Aquarium.
3. The Forest of Jozani:
The greatest portion of native forest in Zanzibar is Jozani Forest, a verdant oasis. The uncommon and endemic Red Colobus monkeys live there. While strolling through the forest, you can also spot a variety of bird species and other creatures, such as bush babies. There is a mangrove boardwalk in the forest, offering visitors a rare opportunity to explore the mangroves and discover more about this significant ecosystem.
4. The Island of Prison:
From Stone Town, Prison Island, also called Changuu Island, is only a short boat trip away. Originally housing dissident slaves, it is now a well-liked tourist destination. The enormous tortoises on the island are well-known, with some of them being over a century old. In addition, snorkeling around the island's crystal-clear waters is a fun way to see vibrant fish and coral reefs.
5. The Beach at Kendwa:
Just south of Nungwi, Kendwa Beach is well-known for its fine sands and tranquil waters, which make it a great place for swimming. Since the tides here don't fluctuate as much as they do at some other beaches, swimming is possible all day. Kendwa is particularly well-known for its Full Moon Parties, where attendees get together to rejoice and dance beneath the stars. It's a wonderful spot to unwind and take in Zanzibar's splendor.
6. Farms that grow spices:
Without touring Zanzibar's renowned spice plantations, a trip there wouldn't be complete. Zanzibar, also called the Spice Island, is a pepper, nutmeg, clove, and cinnamon producer. You can observe how these spices are grown and harvested by taking a spice tour. You will also be able to sample fresh fruits and spices. Along with being instructive, this tour is a sensory feast due to the amazing Flavors and scents.
7. Mnemba Atoll:
A marine conservation area, Mnemba Atoll is a small island off the northeast coast of Zanzibar. It is among Zanzibar's top locations for diving and snorkeling. Marine life abounds in the waters surrounding Mnemba, including vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish, dolphins, and occasionally even turtles. Anyone interested in marine life will find the atoll to be an underwater paradise due to its crystal-clear waters.
Conclusion
Zanzibar is a destination brimming with must-see places that promise an unforgettable experience. From the historic streets of Stone Town to the beautiful beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa, every corner of this island offers something unique. Nature lovers can explore the lush Jozani Forest and encounter the rare Red Colobus monkeys, while adventure seekers can dive into the vibrant underwater world at Mnemba Atoll. The spice farms provide a sensory delight with their rich aromas and Flavors, and Prison Island offers a glimpse into both history and wildlife with its giant tortoises.
