PnF Analysis: Candace

So with the recent catu previews, I thought I’d talk a little about Candace, since from the synopsis alone, Candace’s insecurities will play a huge role in the plot. 

I apologize for the order of things in this post. I’m skipping around. 

Unfair Science Fair Redux Another Story

OK yes, the synopsis of catu is basically the plot of this episode. But I don’t mind an expansion of this situation. 

Candace gets very desperate if her friends are too busy to hang out with her. 

Note: This has nothing to do with the rest of this post but I like how someone decided to just draw a random koala head here. It serves no purpose but I love it. 

Candace misinterprets the text message “CYL BFF -S” as Stacy breaking off their friendship, when Stacy’s just saying she’ll call her later. And we all know Stacy has the patience of a saint so she wouldn’t break off their friendship just like that. 

“Feels like I don't exist anymore, like I'm a nobody. I wish I could go to some cool faraway place and start over.” -Candace

Season 1 doesn’t feature much character development (a few exceptions exist, but they aren’t in the A plot much), though it lays the groundwork for the PnF characters’ surface personalities. Candace is still a bit of a stereotypical teenage girl here, but she has anxious traits that make her feel like a real teenager, and not just a stereotype. 

Looks like catu will be the third time Candace tries to start fresh in a faraway place. 

Gi-Ants

“Why is it that when Phineas and Ferb have an idea, everyone's like "Oh, wow, you guys are really clever!" And when I come up with something, everyone goes "What? Did you say something, Candace?”” -Candace 

Candace creates a bear made out of baklava, but she doesn’t display much confidence in her creations because her brothers can literally break every law of space-time whenever they feel like it, and they get noticed while she doesn’t. And while she loves her brothers, she can’t help but feel second to them in most areas. It’s similar to Heinz’s jealousy of Roger, except that the Flynn-Fletcher siblings are in a healthy and functioning blended family. 

Okay, I’m an only child so I don’t know much about sibling dynamics, but even a healthy sibling relationship can have its flaws, though some communication will definitely go a long way (hopefully enough to prevent a mess like the Stan and Ford Pines situation XD). 

There’s a similar conflict in the Mom’s Birthday episode, where Phineas, Ferb, and B plot interference accidentally undermine Candace’s attempts to give Linda a great birthday, and she feels like she can’t measure up to her brothers, even though she wrote a great and heartfelt song to her mom. 

Candace feeling as though she’s not listened to feeds into her desire to be in charge, because at least when she’s leading something that means someone’s gotta be paying attention to her ideas.

There is literally an episode about Candace’s psych and how her anxieties are large enough to rival Niagara Falls. 

Candace’s anxieties are palpable enough that even the eternally optimistic Phineas is unnerved by the sheer amount of them. 

Where’s Perry Part 2

I decided to just put the entire song here. This one is the second time Candace decides she can’t take the pressure and wants to live elsewhere. 

Candace is very self-aware of how her various neuroses affect her, but no matter how much she tries to change them, they’ll always be a part of her. While she’s surrounded by loving family, great friends, and an understanding boyfriend, sometimes it’s just not enough and the slightest breakdown in one of these areas, even when it arises out of circumstance and isn’t anyone’s fault, can emotionally affect her to the point where she feels the need to escape. 

It’ll be fun and possibly heartbreaking to see Candace in action since it’s likely that all of the above will come into play. Looking forward to this movie!

Phineas and Ferb S1E23: Unfair Science Fair/Unfair Science Fair Redux (Another Story)

Hello, and welcome to the Watchathon, a blog where I watch an episode of TV every weekday, with a blog post where I write down my thoughts afterwards.

And now, here’s my thoughts on Season 1, Episode 23 of Phineas and Ferb: Unfair Science Fair/Unfair Science Fair Redux (Another Story)!

Unfair Science Fair

I think this episode gave us a look into Baljeet’s character. The story of the episode starts with him having a crisis over getting an A- for his Portal to Mars due to lacking a working model, saying it would be the lowest grade he’s ever gotten.

Because of this, Phineas and Ferb offer to help Baljeet build that working model, combining their “mechanical inclination” with his scientific expertise. This nets him an A+++, but the judges don’t get a chance to see it (at first due to Doofenshmirtz unplugging it so he can plug in his baking soda volcano, and then due to it consuming itself) so Baljeet doesn’t win. Not that this matters to him, as he says all he cared about was getting a good grade.

We can see from this and his earlier musical that Baljeet doesn’t care much about whether or not people can see his genius, but cares an awful lot about the grade he gets. If he doesn’t get the best grades he can, then he won’t be able to achieve his dreams, he won’t be a success in life. He’s planning more far ahead than a kid his age (8 years old, considering he’s 18 in a later episode that’s set ten years later), already thinking about college before he’s even in high school.

And it’s not that this is the first time we’ve ever seen this part of him, either. Earlier on, in One Good Scare Ought To Do It, his greatest fear was a failed math test which may prevent him from getting into the college of his choice.

But it isn’t as though he’s letting this all get in the way of his summer fun, either. We’ve seen plenty of times, him joining in on Phineas and Ferb’s big fun project of the day. Baljeet is still a kid at the end of the day, after all, and he has fun like any kid does.

It’s just that he also wants to ensure a good future for himself, by spending a lot of his spare time studying.

Lastly, if you’ll pardon the change of subject, we end this episode leading directly into the next one. Isabella expresses her surprise that the Flynn-Fletcher siblings build a portal to Mars and didn’t go through it themselves, and Phineas replies that they did. But as Ferb says: “That’s another story.” And then, we start our next episode...

Unfair Science Fair Redux (Another Story)

...which literally has “Another Story” in the title.

It’s a unique idea, having the second segment be a midquel to the first. It means that there are jokes here which call forward to the events of Unfair Science Fair, as well as being another story which revolves around the same invention, without any need for it to be rebuilt or otherwise brought back. 

I can understand why this wasn’t done any more times afterwards, there aren’t many episodes which have a time skip like Unfair Science Fair does. Usually Phineas and Ferb’s project of the day is gone the very same day it’s created (hence Candace’s inability to show it to Linda), but in this case, the portal existed from the day it was built until the science fair the next day, and because of that, it had the potential to serve two purposes for two connected-yet-distinct stories: As Baljeet’s science fair project, and as the means for our characters to travel to Mars and get into extraterrestrial antics.

Well, there you go. It's weird how Season 4 more or less dominates the top 5, as do the specials as only one was not one. That wouldn't be odd if Mission Marvel and SBTY were not the odd ones out there, not mention both parts of Where's Perry together.

. I think I just got “better” at this given how many 30 plus sin tallies for 11 minute eps we got in Season 4. I've always done these in about the same way but whatever, I've given up trying to make sense of how these turn out. So there you go, all the sin tallies. Have fun with all this data. At some point I may post stuff reeated to this, looking at my top 20 to see how many sins my faves tend to get (for one, the 3 highest counts go to my top 3 of Season 4). Maybe someday.

is there ever an explanation given as to why the cast (sans perry) use flip phones when p&f could've made them more current ones over the series? (p.s. this blog is so much fun to go through, it's a serious nostalgia trip)

As far as I can tell, the phone issue (those were “current” phones at the time, though they did invent a slightly more advanced cellphone in “Candace Disconnected” and used smartphones in Season 4) is largely an artifact of PnF being such a long running show (CTRL + F to “2007″), having spanned from 2007 to 2015 during a time of rapid technological advancement.
