I'm watching through the 2007 season and have reached China, where the commentators have implied that Valentino said something about needing to bring a gun to stop Casey?? Am i misinterpreting? Was this received...well?

yeah he did!! shanghai quote's on the left, other time he joked about needing a gun to stop casey also included on the right (from laguna 2008, of course):

(what makes the laguna thing particularly funny is that I've found multiple mentions of the gun comment, so I reckon he did say it... but the actual clip of valentino's post-qualifying press conference (with casey in the room, of course) - as well as a different set of post-qualifying remarks he made - only talk about the thirty second headstart. not the gun. which means that this absolute bastard, this fucker, this little rat, said at least three times on saturday afternoon of the laguna 2008 weekend that he'd need to jump the start by half a minute to beat casey. laying it on a little thick, don't you think)

anyway. I'm still keeping a look out for any other times valentino said something like this but... it's another cute habit! like calling casey a god/devil/demon or saying his talent is unbeatable or whatnot, it's another way valentino hypes up just how good casey was. so melodramatic, "rarely guilty of making an understatement" as the guardian would put it. obviously at shanghai 2007, valentino was talking more about the ducati top speed (shanghai was a very straight-dominated circuit) than about how impossibly good casey was, but still. it's an extreme form of expectation management, it's funny, and it's another little detail that speaks to the vibe of that rivalry. vale is willing to do whatever it takes to beat casey, and casey is making him push it that far. makes valentino go just short of the literal gun. as for the reaction, well, people in the forums thought it was funny, though they were a bit worried it meant another runaway race victory for casey. that was probably the general reaction... and this was still early enough in the season that I reckon even casey probably just about managed to take it as a compliment. like I said, cute

Per primary sources (reassembled digital zines[¹], screenshotted facebook posts kept on flash drive archives[²], pastel Tumblr art[³],) the "Punk" was a mythological or archetypal "underdog" figure in late-anthropocene technophile civilization, believed by its followers and devotees to be situated in abstract spiritual opposition to the "Nazi" - similar parallels in history can be seen within Zoroastrian conceptions of Ahura Mazda and Angra Mainyu, though Ahura Mazda lacks the plucky, downtrodden connotation of "Punk"

Devotees would claim that certain things are "Punk" in an effort to lend their activities moral and political weight and contrast them against the dark spiritual figure of "The Nazi" in order to find solace in the notoriously meaning-deprived Anthropocene. The "Punk" as depicted by our incomplete primary source material was associated with patronizing Hot Topic (a pre-Starfish Incident minor religious franchise), guitars (We are unsure if the Punk was actually associated with any sort of musical motif due to none of the sources providing any artists or audio files), going to the public library, wearing unpainted denim jackets with embedded pyramidal studs, and "respecting pronouns." We are unsure why such a figure would lend outsized veneration to simple parts of speech, but the phrasing keeps cropping up in the research.

He did, however, have a crystal-clear memory of the first time he’d actually seen Hattie with all that the emphasis on that word implied.”

“She’d obviously read the ‘no’ in his expression, and her smile widened.”

“’It was a Tuesday morning at Malvern Abbey.’”

“And now she felt excessively wrong sharing close whispering breaths with Patrick especially with Anthony sitting on a folding chair a few meters behind the camera awaiting his queue to slip in for the daydream portion of the scene, and currently watching their every move. His pose was typically lazy, one boot crossed over the other, his fingers tapping on the arm of the chair, but he hadn’t looked away from them once. Something in his demeanor had the usually easy-going Patrick antsy as hell, probably the twitching eyelid.”

“’A definite improvement,’ Stevie’s voice came from behind them, very dryly. ‘And if we’d actually started shooting yet, we could probably call it a day.’”
