Highlights of the “In-Character” portion of the Project Eden’s Garden AMONG US stream in no particular order:
Damon introducing himself as “the Ultimate Debater. A prodigy among prodigies. Someone who simply can’t be outmatched.” And everyone going dead silent before making fun of his egotistical ass
Eva hiding in the corner of the waiting room
Diana going to the corner of the waiting room with Eva to keep her company
Kai being the reason the stream started late because he couldn’t decide the perfect look for his Among Us character
All their little characters matching them so well; Wolfgang in a little suit, Grace with bunny ears, Wenona with bear ears, Tozu’s goat horns, etc, and Eva just having absolutely nothing on
Wolfgang and Jean not knowing how to play video games and just doing their best
How utterly excited Tozu is that everyone is playing a killing game and he gets to play too
Damon yelling OH GOD DAMMIT so bad the mic reverberated after Wolfgang killed him
Wolfgang being imposter, killing everyone, and going “that was fun! 🙂”, followed by Jean going “I didn’t know you had it in you!” and Wolfgang replying with “I didn’t know I had it in me either 🙂”
Ulysses mention that apparently in-world he was supposed to attend but overslept (possible explanation that is why Wenona attended)
Wolfgang doesn’t know what tiktok is
Kai and Damon sticking together and doing tasks and everyone going “yeah okay”
^^^ My personal favourite is Cassidy telling everyone to come look at them doing tasks together on the cameras and Jean going “oh so those two were off canoodling somewhere”
Cassidy being the kind of Among Us player who bets everything on “you’ll be sorry” or “do it then” and expects it to work and is shocked every time when it doesn’t
Tozu dying early on in every game
Damon catching an imposter in a lie by saying he couldn’t have been the killer, because he was with “Kai, his very good friend”
Jean saying “a princess has to look her best” when Cassidy makes fun of Kai taking too much time in customization menu and then adding “welcome back princess” when Kai finished
Wolfgang hitting Damon with “it’s just a game” when Damon was locked the fuck in on busting Wolfgang as imposter
Diana going for Tozu first as imposter and still being an absolutely terrible liar
Cassidy correct guessing Damon as the imposter begging him loudly not to kill her in voice proximity, so he actually can’t kill her anymore, so instead he scoffs and goes “wish” before trotting off
Damon being revealed as imposter last minute and Eva yelling about how she trusted him. Kai also being there.
Grace and Wenona very clearly not knowing how the game works but refusing to admit it
Cassidy calling Wolfgang Grace’s boytoy

VERY late entry for Ulysses Week's prompt "the divide". Lyrics are from Autopsy Garland by the Mountain Goats. I have a project for fnv planned involving the whole song, but I couldn't get this concept for an alternate Ulysses thing for these lyrics out of my head. I love Ulysses and the divide very much. >24 hours of drawing on this one.

Eva's crow motif & Wolfgang's sheep motif - the relevance of animals in Project: Eden's Garden going forwards
As a disclaimer, Wolfgang of course has two animal motifs - the sheep and the wolf. In this specific post I will only cover the former as I believe it is most relevant in relation to Eva and this first chapter in general. I personally think that his wolf motif will become more apparent as the story progresses and Wolfgang continues to haunt the narrative. As for Eva - many of the things attributed to crows also apply to ravens and some have absolutely pointed out the associations ravens specifically have (Aesop's fables, the Tower of London myth, Edgar Allen Poe) that relate to Eva. I will not be touching on that in this post and am instead focusing on the different species of crow.
With that out of the way - major spoilers for chapter one of Project: Eden's Garden ahead!
& This is a text only version of my tiktok post, if you are more visual and would prefer to read it there!
WOLFGANG & THE SHEEP
The most blatant is that sheep hold great Biblical significance not least because Jesus Christ himself is referred to as the "Lamb of God" and the term "sacrificial lamb" derives from exactly that in Christ's sacrifice to atone the sins of humanity. Wolfgang as a Christ-like figure being killed by Eva named after the first to sin paints the perfect picture for the commencement of the killing game.
Wolfgang is treated by the majority of the cast, barring Eva, Damon and arguably Ulysses and Wenona, as a "saviour". The most explicit example of this thinking is asserted by Desmond after Eva's trial as he refers to Wolfgang as "one of the only people who could've handled this situation" who could have "made progress on escaping". He acts as this guiding light towards salvation for them as sheep are social, flock animals, and shepherds symbols of guidance. Until he is killed and the ideas of atonement and salvation die with him, even as Diana attempts to "resurrect" his image.
"And he gave unto them commandments, that they should worship the Lord their God, and should offer the firstlings of their flocks, for an offering unto the Lord. And Adam was obedient unto the commandments of the Lord." (Bible, Moses 5:7, Adam and Eve sacrifice a lamb to God)
If we take Tozu's role in the academy and killing game to be equivalent to that of God, then his animal motif being a ram/goat neatly links to Wolfgang's sheep and Christ symbolism. Tozu is the father, Wolfgang is the son, and Eva (as the bird) is the Holy Spirit and all three are bound together as one in this murder case that implicates them all. Not to mention how Eva literally sacrifices Wolfgang, the lamb, to Tozu, the God.
Shakespeare is an interesting perspective to take into account considering Tozu's theatrical nature and the consistent references to theatre within P:EG (EG: Tozu referencing Horace in the prologue). In Shakespeare's plays, sheep are often symbolic of vulnerability and used as a means of "peripeteia" - the turning point where the narrative's tone darkens. Wolfgang's murder, the first murder, abides by this perfectly. His death symbolises the death of any semblance of order and justice within this situation and opens the way for the killing game to truly begin.
"We were as twinn'd lambs that did frisk i' the sun, And bleat the one at the other: what we changed Was innocence for innocence." (William Shakespeare, The Winter's Tale, 1.2.85-7)
While lambs are symbolic of sacrifice in many cultures, they are not entirely passive and become aggressive when cornered, usually by gearing up to ram or buck. This reflects how aggressive Wolfgang becomes when drugged and essentially herded in a corner by Eva, leading him to lash out at Diana. Wolfgang is the only character whose animal motif is an animal classed as livestock which is another way upon his sacrificial lamb symbolism that he was destined to die - he has been slaughtered and his metaphorical fleece has been repurposed for Diana to wear instead.
EVA & THE CROW
Firstly, crows tend to be seen either solitary or paired in nature. While they can be social animals, this is not the trend. Instantly this relates to how Eva has endured isolation and exclusion throughout her life, including in the academy. Damon is the first person she forms any sort of bond with and from the moment they wake up in the same area they are cemented as a "pair". P:EG overall has "pairs" as an extremely prominent theme due to the entire concept of Eden.
Her isolation can connect also to how crows have been observed to hold grudges. Eva's history as a victim of bullying instilled in her a victim complex and "me vs them" mentality where she takes any sort of negative reaction as "proof" that people are out to get her - something her Ultimate peers triggered with their mocking of her actual talent and confusion over her lies alike. Her targeting of Wolfgang was based in a grudge born from him singling her out as untrustworthy and how she believed he was turning everyone against her with his influence. Crows are opportunistic creatures - Eva saw the opportunity to get rid of Wolfgang and frame Diana in one fell swoop and took it. Much of her plan relied on that opportunity.
General populations deem crows largely as pests and they are, as a result, vulnerable to hunting by humans which ties into not only how Eva was and believed she was viewed by her peers, but also in how she was being "hunted" by Tozu every moment she did not kill after claiming the perk. That traitor's perk giving Eva access to the cameras essentially provided her with a "bird's eye view" of the happenings around the academy - something made further apparent by how she was watching from right above the murder as it happened.
Crows are known widely as thieves much like magpies both in the sense of them stealing prey from predators and the reputation they have gained in many human cultures for stealing precious items for their nests. It does not feel unintentional, then, that her plan saw her steal from her peers' rooms ("nests") to kill her prey. Additionally, crows have been reported to cause power outages through contact with power lines/poles which directly parallels the blackout during Eva's murdering of Wolfgang.
Most glaringly is how crows hold the familiar associations with evil and the Devil in Gael culture; in the 18th century, shepherds in the Scottish highlands would make offerings to hooded crows ("hoodies") to deter them from attacking sheep.
"In Pennant's Tour in Scotland (1771) there is described a curious ceremony in which offerings were made by Scottish herdsmen to the hooded crow, eagle and other enemies of sheep to induce them to spare the flock. (...) The crow killed lambs and annoyed sickly sheep." - Ernest Ingersoll, 1923, Birds in legend, fable and folklore, p.165
This blatantly links to Eva's murder victim being Wolfgang, whose animal motif is literally a sheep to her crow. The only "offering" made to Eva was Diana's extension of friendship, but at that point the crow had already taken flight. The hooded crows indigenous to the highlands would migrate down to the more temperate southern England during winter where they gained the local name "Royston crows" due to how they feasted on the carcasses of sheep in the sheep fields of Royston, Herfordshire.
In Shintoism, crows are associated with the idea of rebirth after tragedy strikes due to the image of them feasting on the slain after great battles. Much like Wolfgang's "Lamb of God" symbolism, this will likely come to fruition in Eva's presence never truly dying, that she will be remembered after death, and that Diana will "resurrect" her image just as she is attempting to do with Wolfgang.
So: HOW MUCH SHOULD WE CONSIDER THE ANIMAL MOTIFS GOING FORWARDS?
The plain and simple answer is that it depends and must be applied on a case by case basis. Our analysis cannot start and end with the animal motifs nor can it hinge on them as they are one angle of analysis among many - most prominently Biblical allusions and characterisation and, above all, how all of these aspects link to each other. For instance, you cannot just say "this character will kill because their animal motif is a predator" because there are far more layers to it than that.
The animal motifs are important and should not be disregarded as Diana, Eva and Wolfgang have proven - they just cannot be the sole point of analysis at a stage where we have everyone's characterisation to consider in conjunction with them.
For example, while Wolfgang's sheep motif is absolutely relevant and noteworthy, I don't personally think there is as much to say about it as Eva's crow motif based on what we have so far. How it acts as a springboard for Wolfgang's Biblical allusions especially RE his Christ symbolism is the most notable element of it so far in my opinion. And this could very well be because he has two animal motifs for us to sink our teeth into - I just have not found enough with him and the wolf to warrant a full discussion yet.
My thoughts on his wolf motif becoming more relevant later on in the story relates in part to his name, Wolfgang, meaning "travelling wolf" and being taken from an actual German saint in Christianity - which connects deftly to how Wolfgang is already being treated postmortem. In his book "Teutonic Mythology", Jacob Grimm defines the name as one held by a victorious hero. Overall, I think the wolf beneath sheep's clothing is yet to be truly revealed.
On the whole, Wolfgang and Eva prove without a doubt how important and relevant everyone's animal motifs will be beyond mere aesthetics - as does Diana's speech at the end of the chapter! What must be taken into account when looking into what everyone's motifs could mean is their individual characterisations and other elements of their characters. The animal motifs are only one piece of the puzzle, but they are a necessary piece in my opinion.
Thank you for reading please feel free to add more thoughts! I have no doubt I missed stuff, especially in regards to Wolfgang's sheep motif. There is absolutely something to say about him and being an undesirable “black sheep” in relation to his background but those thoughts aren’t fleshed out enough at the moment.

If you’re not weird like me about Fallout lore, feel free to go ahead and ignore this post. Because some people play video games to play them, and not to systematically piece them together as a cohesive whole. And you don’t have to be a perfectionist about something before you’re allowed to enjoy it. But if you’re still reading, I’m forced to correct two Fallout theories I see all the time:
Deacon is not the Lone Wanderer.
Courier Six is not the Lone Wanderer.
A lot of people accept these headcanons and even build them into their OCs, which is why I was hesitant to rain on their parades. But my parade is being anal about lore, so allow me this little timeline dive. The Lone Wanderer left Vault 101 in August 2277, at 19 years old. The earliest confirmed Deacon sighting was late 2273, when he was already a full-fledged Railroad agent. There’s a pretty strong theory that he joined the Railroad much earlier, but regardless, he’s an old, old man (affectionate).

The Wanderer, of course, was studying for the GOAT at this time, so it’s hard to square the two without some serious shenanigans. The Courier’s past is a little more complex, but they have to have been active as a courier in early 2277 at the latest. According to Joshua, the Divide’s destruction happened before the First Battle of Hoover Dam, which took place in 2277:

There’s a reading I’ve heard where the Lone Wanderer finishes up the events of Fallout 3 before 2278 begins (which would just barely be possible with DLCs) and travels west in time to deliver the package. But Ulysses indicates that the Courier had an active involvement with the Divide for some time before it was destroyed.

So between August and January, the timeline would have to be: Leave Vault —> Finish all of Fallout 3 including Broken Steel —> Travel to California for some reason —> Become a mailman —> Travel enough to develop a city —> Blow up that city by accident —> Hoover Dam.
The only other explanation is that Ulysses is confidently wrong and he’s thinking of a different courier. Which is hilarious, and more power to you if you accept it as a headcanon, but it does do some violence to the Themes and whatnot.
(If you’re interested, here is my personal theory re. Deacon and the Lone Wanderer)
#maybe i’ll do a fallout theory ranking someday#tbh i hate most of them bc i’m curmudgeonly#but i’m open to having my mind changed ¯\_(ツ)_/¯#fnv#fallout new vegas#fallout 3#fo3#fo4#deacon fallout 4#the lone wanderer#ulysses new vegas#joshua graham#the courier#courier six#fallout nv#fonv#fo3 lone wanderer#lone wanderer#deacon fo4#fallout#new vegas#fallout 4#fallout: new vegas#lonesome road spoilers#fallout 4 spoilers#fallout 3 spoilers#new vegas spoilers#fallout new vegas spoilers

I just want to say I love Project Martyr chat. I fear you cooked
Also, Kesabel has my heart. They are honestly just so adorable !!! LIKE BABY LET ME GIVE YOU A HUG ! Free Kesabel guys, get them out of there with the rest of those freaks /SILLY /J
I think my favorites of Project Martyr really don't add up like, at all 😞 Samyaza, Reficul, and Kesabel are fighting for #1 spot. Moloch and Arakiel are close seconds. . .but they are all so great man. . . I have to make it my goal to draw all of them one day because they had NO reason to serve so hard.
This is really just fangirling(so surprising). I have nothing in particular to ask, BUT
Uly and Project Martyr content is always appreciated. . .hehe
On a good note, I'm going on Thanksgiving break today, so uh, hopefully you get to go on break soon too !!! If you do, enjoy yourself :)
-Ulysses loving anon
PROJECT MARTYR. MORE LIKE. PROJECT MARTYR!!!!!!!!!!
I'M GLAD YOU LIKE THEM ALL SO MUCH ?!?!?!?!?!?@?@?!(#&* i put a lot of care into (most) of the members so it means a lot... projmar season 2 when? shoutout to ulyanon fangirling. i would owe you my life if you drew all of them.... omg... cries
kesabel is fighting for their life in this god forsaken office/killing game they are never winning. they tried getting along with the others while being held hostage (maybe they were being a little too annoying by preaching outside of the projmar office so aishire kidnapped them) but honestly no one paid them much mind, aside from reficul who was like :( i'll try to make sure it is all painless for you. (proceeds to traumadump and make them commit suicide)
i feel like. aishire might've based everyone off of angels/demons bc of kesabel. he just saw them and thought "i want to ruin their day even more. go my employees, make angel and demon robots because i'm basically like god anyways i'm so awesome"
REFICUL IS MY GOAT. MY MENTALLY INSANE GOAT. (kind of literally tbh they are the literal devil)
for most of projmar i have planned that they're constantly teetering on the edge of just giving up. their stoicism (autism) has made it so everyone expects them to continue being so otherwise they're in the wrong. they're evil. but if they put things into their own hands they're demonized. and they're struggling with their dead spouse's goals not aligning with theirs. to the point where they're pleading to a ghost that they want to stop.
genesis wants project martyr to continue to fester more emotion into the world so people become more violent and feed into the primordial silt so it may one day consume everyone once more and the golden age will come back, while reficul very much wants to end project martyr and stop all the deaths (i don't think it's much of a spoiler to say they fail in this.)
WISH I HAD MORE TO SAY ABOUT SAMYAZA BUT THEIR CHARACTERIZATION HAS ALWAYS BEEN WEIRD FOR MEEE. originally they were a much more. abusive and manipulative character (especially towards azazel) but they've really shifted into being just a deeply lonely person over the years. tbh i'm really glad that happened bc frankly i would not let them serve that hard if they still kept up that behavior
i still am keeping their bond with azazel but instead of a manipulating them into staying with them, samyaza just confided in them a lot after One Smoke Break together and latched on hard, while azazel was there for them... and azazel was a tad uncomfortable with the sheer amount of latching onto that happened, they still listened
samyaza carries Heavy amounts of guilt, from both their family to their desires, they feel like its wrong to be materialistic and giving themselves basic self care because their siblings already sacrificed so much for them (peneume mainly)
MOLOCH AND ARAKIEL. SHAKES THEM. THEY'RE SO FUCKINGGGG. i really like their dynamic they're so fucking goofy. arakiel is taking things so seriously while moloch is like "today i had pancakes for breakfast". it's so funny how arakiel is more of an edgelord than moloch despite moloch's clothing being the embodiment of hot topic ANYHOO only one drawing this time gomenne
honestly i need to compile . all my comics for uly . they're pretty bad and all need their own posts bc this man is a fucking FREAK and i like TORMENTING HIM. anyways have a greatest hits comp of him and diomedes' gay chicken offs

Part 2 to my "Assigning Miraculous to Fable characters" part 1 here
Tldr part 1 summary:
Rae - Ladybug earrings (creation)
Athena - Black Cat ring (destruction)
Will - Ox (resistance)
Arisanna - turtle (protection)
Centross - Goat (passion)
Ulysses- Peacock (emotion)
No one has the Rabbit miraculous
I think Ven would suit the Fox Miraculous. His work for Fable of hiding/changing the truth would suit it well. Naturally, the illusion power would go with Perix, however, I like to think that, somehow, it *was* Perixs and when she "got mirrored" she lost it and it landed in Vens possession somehow. Perix would taunt Ven into "unlocking the secrets of the miraculous" so he can see Fengari again and uses the power to hide the Skulk on his house. He'd later use it to help hide the base under the Aether Portal.
Caspian would be good for the Pig miraculous. At his core, Caspian is about memory and not being forgotten - thus why he ascends to be the Patron of Memory - so I like to think that having the ability to show someone's greatest desire would fit him, especially in a world where everyone is forgetting things and having their memories erased left and right. And by showing and seeing people's greatest desire, I think it could help with a lot of questions about people's motives and character throughout the series.
I had a long debate with myself on which miraculous to give Ocie, but I settled on Tiger. The tiger miraculous symbolises: willpower, courage, and personal strength , so I think that fits Ocie well. One thing I love about Ocies character is that she's actually really powerful and strong - a true bad bitch. I don't see her using the 'clout' a lot, only the few times where it was necessary in battle, but even then I think she would be aware of just how much power that has and the damage she could to with it and she would concider when and where to use it. (Having said that I can also absolutely see her using it to do something like deforestation so...) I also think itd be neat if, when in camouflage mode, the panjas bracelets centre piece was a blue gem that looked almost similar to a heart of the sea.
I think Momboo would be good for a couple of them (Peacock or Turtle especially), but with those already assigned and reading up on the Dog miraculous I think that would suit her. The dog is a symbol of guidance, protection and love, which I think is very Momboo. I also don't see Momboo as a very "front lines" fighter and the dog miraculous isn't a strong miraculous for fighting - even throughout the miraculous series, we don't see it being strongly used as an offence tactic. So I think this is a good miraculous for Momboo.
The snake miraculous is about Intuition, second chances, rebirth, patience, and healing... I feel like Wolf is the obvious choice based off of that alone. I'm very cautious with who to give the snake miraculous to as it is one of - if not the most - powerful miraculous and it involves time travel to a degree, however, like the others, I think Wolf would be wise to use it, only when complete necessary and would understand the stakes at hand. I see them using the strategy it would take to use a power like this, very similar to how Luka uses strategy and even trial and error to use this power wisely.
That's what I have so far, i still have the: Bee, Butterfly, Monkey, Dragon, Rooster, Horse, and Mouse to go, but im not sure who would go well with them,
Thoughts? Opinions?
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk

Also possible Ulysses×Courier Six thing, just to share as you are the Ulysses blogger to me: With my current courier, Ulysses' ability to endlessly monologue is equally matched by Nelson's ability to ask endless questions. They will have very long discussions on just about anything. (Also of note: Nelson is a psyker, the last remaining member of what became of the surviving Children of the Cathedral. Deuteronomy 2:10 by the Mountain Goats plays for both him and Ulysses.)
ooh nelson 🤝 moz re: asking ulysses endless questions!!! idk about nelson and ulysses but moz and ulysses can spend days just talking to each other :) moz is very curious and is a chatterbox and ulysses of course is very verbose and tends to monologue and i love that about them 💖
also psykers are super cool and OUGH that's an a++ song choice for both of them!!!!

Fun Fact about my TF2 Medics x Seven Deadly Sins:
In each ring of Hell, which are Pride, Wrath, Gluttony, Lust, Sloth, and Envy. Not all demons will look the same as the Ring Demons leaders (My Medics OCs).
For example, in the Pride Ring, will be the demons that punish the sinners from Earth. BUT! The demons will look different, but they will have the same skin color of Garvit (Pride Medic), which is different types of color purple!
For the Wrath Ring, the demons might look like Ulysses (Wrath Medic), who is supposed to be a type of bull. Some of the demons of the Wrath Ring bull like or goat like. Not very different from Ulysses. But also their exposed skin will have the colors that represent Anger/Wrath.
As you might already know, Gloton (Gluttony Medic) is a type of gargoyle demon! But not all the demons of the Gluttony Ring are gargoyles. Some of them are meanwhile others aren't. For example, you might find demons that look like wolves and bees. And if you are lucky enough, you might find demons that might look like hyenas! They also don't have a specific color that represents Gluttony at all. They can have any type of color!
I can't explain the rest of the Rings because I need to go to sleep! Night night!!!

Movies I watched this week (#178):
2 X Wojciech Jerzy Has + 2 X Bruno Schulz:
🍿 Bruno Schulz, "The Polish Kafka", is regarded as 'one of the finest Polish prose stylists of the 20th century'. Before being killed by the Gestapo in 1942, he published only 2 small works. Both were adapted to the cinema later on.
The Hourglass Sanatorium (1973) is a wild surrealist interpretation of Schulz's stories. An acclaimed masterpiece of Borgesian proportions, but where the magical realism is of the Eastern European type, played by poor Shtetl-Jews. A dark, decrepit nightmare, covered with spiderwebs, years before Terry Gilliam ploughed through the same insanities. Schrodinger time-shifts, mysterious doppelgängers, grotesque wax mannequins and lots of sensuality among the ruins. It's a heady, bizarro work of mythological unease. And the final dream scenes connect the story to the holocaust and the annihilation of this world, taking place in graveyards and on the shocking deportation lines. It's Heavy!
🍿 Accordion, Jerzy Has's first short, was how I discovered him. A wordless, bleak fable from 1947, about a son of a poor shoemaker who dreams about buying a used 'Harmonia'.
🍿 Street of Crocodiles on the other hand, the second Bruno Schulz adaptation, was a let down. Dark British stop-animation puppetry, wordless, confusing and in dirty back alleys. An experimental mood piece in a Jan Švankmajer style, but without the charm. M'eh. 1/10.
(Meanwhile I am listening to the music score for Kieślowski's Three Colors: Blue.)
🍿
Six by Sondheim, a 2013 documentary and my introduction to composer and lyricist Stephen Sondheim. Absolutely beautiful! (And I loved his Ethel Merman / Loretta Young anecdote...) 8/10.
I have to start searching for his full repertoire. (Or at least I should re-visit 'Marriage Story' one more time...)
🍿
2 by female directors:
🍿 On May 9, 1954, two days before the start of 'La Pointe Courte', her first feature film, Agnès Varda took a photograph of a naked man, a boy named Ulysse and a dead goat on the beach of Calais. (Photo Above). In 1983, she recreated that experience in the documentary Ulysse, an evocative reflection about the time machine of memory, history and art. It’s my 15th Varda film, and was as good as the best of them - 9/10. [*Female Director*].
🍿 Possibly in Michigan (1983) an avant-garde horror musical about cannibalism, a feminist revenge fantasy. Two women shopping for perfume at a department store, are being stalked by a masked serial killer. Artsy and disturbing. A complete review here. [*Female Director*].
🍿
The Browning Version, a British public school drama from 1951. Michael Redgrave gave a tremendous performance as a repressed and meek teacher, isolated and unloved. His contemptuous wife has an affair with a coworker, his nickname by his pupils is 'Himmler of the Fifth Ward', and on his last day of his last term, he's denied his pension. It's a story of failure and heartbreak.
🍿
Benoît Magimel X 3:
🍿 "...La Salope…… La Salope.... La Salooope..."
Magimel made his debut performance as a 12 year old delinquent in the quirky comedy Life Is a Long Quiet River, which tackled the question of Nature vs. Nurture in a wry and unexpected way. 2 babies get swapped at the hospital out of spite. One belongs to a rich family, the other to a poor one.
I never heard of it before, didn't know what to expect - and enjoyed it very much. 7/10.
🍿 The Bridesmaid, my 11th Amour Fou thriller by Claude Chabrol, made 6 years before his death. It started effortlessly and smooth, and was a delight to watch. But then Magimel meets and falls hopelessly in love with an enigmatic, 'unusual' woman, who's also a compulsive liar and a psychotic nutcase, and the rest just didn't work out. 3/10.
🍿 In Putain de Porte from 1994, 4 guys, including very young Vincent Cassel, Mathieu Kassovitz, and Magimel try to crash a party they were not invited to. M'eh.
🍿
3 by Dutch Bert Haanstra:
🍿 Glass, a short documentary from 1958, and the first Oscar win for The Netherlands. A highly-satisfying jazzy poem with terrific score, performed by The Pim Jacobs Quintet. My best film of the week - 10/10.
🍿 Zoo, made 3 years later, is similarly wonderful. Filmed with hidden camera, it draws parallels between the animals at the zoo and the many visitors who come to observe them, but really, behave in exactly the same ways. 9/10.
🍿 Fanfare was another successful comedy which he directed in 1958, and one which for decades, was “the most popular of all Dutch films”. It's a charming low-brow entertainment [what the Danes call 'Folkekomedie'] about a musical feud in a small touristy village. Its bucolic country all the way: Cows in the meadows, beer steins in the coffee hall, love in the haystacks, a trombone band, the whole nine yards. The only things missing were Gouda cheese wheels, wooden clogs and stork nests.
🍿
2 with Anne Miller:
🍿 I'm getting more and more enamored with old-fashioned musicals, especially from the technicolor era, and all the ones with Fred Astaire. He was such a happy dancer! Easter parade is a Pygmalion story with the usual power imbalance: He's 49, and Judy Garland is 26. But they were so wonderful! Ann Miller, (as was her custom I guess), played the the third wheel to their romance.
🍿 I think that Room Service was the only Marx Brothers comedy I haven't seen before. Their best comedies were masterpieces, but the weak ones were pitiful. The whole plot was about the three of them not able to pay their hotel bill, so basically it was "based on a true story". Ann Miller and young Lucille Ball served as background decorations. Jumpin' butterballs! 2/10.
🍿
My friend Simon is going through the classic works of Russian literature (Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Etc.), and is currently heavy into Nikolai Gogol. So in sympathy I tried watching the 1926 silent Soviet version of The Overcoat. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish it.
🍿
2 juvenile comedies by Steve Pink:
🍿 "Excuse me, Miss, what color is Michael Jackson?"
In the opening scene of the gross-out guy comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, Craig Robinson pulls out a BMW key out of a dog's ass. Right off the bat, you know if this screwball time-machine story is for you. With ‘method actor’ Rob Corddry playing a raging asshole, (which he seems to be doing very well), and naked cameo of Megan Calvet-Draper. Raunchy but funny in parts. 7/10.
🍿 I shouldn't have tried to follow it up with his trashy teenage comedy Accepted. Jonah Hill, a year before 'Superbad', with about 100 lb. more, young Blake Lively, angry Lewis Blake and Dr. Frederick Chilton get together 1/2 a star (out of 10). For the rest, I could barely stay for half an hour, before having to turn it off. it was "Super Bad"!...
🍿
New discovery - The brilliant shorts of Arthur Lipsett!
🍿 Arthur Lipsett was a visionary Canadian avant-garde artist, who suffered from schizophrenia, and who eventually killed himself. His 1963 montage film 21-87 was a tremendous collage of discarded snippets found on the editing floor of the National Board Of Canada where he worked as an editor. 10/10.
🍿 Very nice, very nice, his very first film from 1961, was just as unique. It was nominated for an Oscar, and was adored by Stanley Kubrick, who subsequently offered Lipsett a job as the editor of the trailer for 'Dr. Strangelove'. Another 10/10.
🍿 Free Fall (1964) was even darker and more chaotic, with definite hints of psychosis. He had a brilliant sense of juxtaposition and collage, both sights and sounds.
🍿
"You made me the happiest juvenile delinquent in Baltimore!..."
First watch: John Waters’ most mainstream attempt Cry-Baby, a 1950's 'Squares vs. Hill-billies' teen rebel musical. Elvis + Grease + Rebel without a cause with Tracy Lords and Willem Dafoe and Iggy Pop and Joe Dallesandro. 3/10.
🍿
“Back to the salt mines…”
James Bond No. 2, From Russia with love, before the series got its footing. With blond villain Robert Shaw, and primitive levels of intrigues and suspense. Best producer fruit-name still goes to Albert R. Broccoli. 3/10.
🍿
More random bunch of acclaimed 10-minute shorts:
🍿 In the Darkness of Time, J-L Godard's 2002 collage of poetic images, juxtaposed into a mosaic of concepts: love, art, memory, death, humanity, destruction and cinema. He really was 'un poète' first and foremost.
🍿 René Laloux 1964 visual essay, Dead Times. A sardonic, surrealistic poem about Man's inherit need to kill everything around him. Like 'La Planète sauvage', the drawings are by Roland Topol, and the music is similar.
🍿 When the Day Breaks, another National Board of Canada Oscar nominated short, from 1999, about a humanoid pig who witnesses the accidental death of a humanoid rooster. 8/10. [*Female Director*].
🍿 Inspiration (1949), my second film by Czechoslovakian Karel Zeman (after ‘Invention for destruction’). A stop motion tale of a glass ballerina and a glass clown, the type of little figurines that used to be so popular then.
🍿 I think this is the closest to how the footage looked (2012) is an artsy but touchy Israeli short. A young man remembers the actual last day in the life of his mother, and how his father by mistake erased the video he had taken of her that last day.
🍿 Bluebeard, a fantastic 1901 film by Georges Méliès, about the serial killer and his eighth wife.
🍿Litany of Happy People (1971), my first by Slovenian Karpo Godina, of the Yugoslav 'Black Wave' cinematic movement. Experimental hippy documentary about the various minority ethnicities in some village.
🍿 Cathedral (1971), one of the earliest gay films that came after Stonewall. A poetic love session between three beautiful guys in a shrine of sheets, which eventually turns into a cathedral. Not for me, but okay…
🍿 Once Upon a Time there Lived a Dog, a 1982 Soviet folk tale about a dog and a wolf.
🍿
James Payne, curator of the channel 'Great Art Explained' gave a 51 min. exploration of Hieronymus Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights. A fascinating run-down, worth watching together with the detailed 'De tuin der lusten' project and Wikipedia. 8/10.

also also also- gang what’s the atmosphere around here about project: Eden’s garden 🧍??? recently just got into it and here’s my unsolicited favorites and opinions rn:
1. Damon, Ulysses, Eva, Tozu, and Diana are my favorite especially Diana :,(( idgaf if no one could give a rat’s ass about her at the end of chapter 1— I DID!! I stood up and applauded.
plus I’m hella bias and I love girls with pink hair and cutie patootie personalities (ex: Nao Egokoro from YTTD) loved her from the start
2. Damon is one of the best protags in the Danganronpa series, fan made or otherwise. I was genuinely shocked to see his monologues and internal dialogue to be so..uncharacteristically protag like?? Like he was so rude to ppl (verbally and mentally) and had no hope for these strangers to be able to survive without killing anyone. I found it so refreshing to have a character not be “b-b-but guys, we’re friends!!” NOT IN THIS CIRCUMSTANCE anyhow he’s the goat 🫶
3. Now..hot take gang, I hated Cassidy & Kai (a bit of Ingrid but only because I just hate her sprites idk??)— BEFORE I GET JUMPED FOR DISLIKING THE TWO POPULAR CHARACTERS,, it’s only because they way they interrupt the class trials and just idk 😭 ik they are lowkey the comic relief kind of jokester but jeez..I CANT STAND THEM
although, I will say, I appreciate all the characters in this game (which is rare in a danganronpa game where all of the characters are likeable in a sense). And if I didn’t mention the character..I perchance like them but the first point are my bbgs 🤞
4. The whole animal and religion symbolism in this game GOES HARD—by religion I mean the title of the game and how some animals do have a part in it (ex: Damon being the snake, correlates with how Eve took the apple because of the snake, the Garden of Eden. Also not a coincidence that Eva is similar to Eve and she was the first one to die in the class trial.)
I think this fan game, alone, is amazing and the creators, voice actors, and everyone who worked on this did an amazing job!!
